Twenty hostages were released Monday as part of an agreement intended to end the war in Gaza. Trump met with some of their families during his visit to the Knesset.

The moment remains fragile, however, as Israel and Hamas are still in the early stages of implementing the first phase of Trump’s peace plan.

On Sunday, a group of protesters gathered outside a synagogue in Brooklyn to express their opposition to New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani’s visit, as reported by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Mamdani, a practicing Muslim originally from Uganda, has been serving as a New York State Assembly member since 2021. A resident of Queens, he identifies as a Democratic socialist.

Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope extended invitations to all mayoral candidates, aiming to facilitate meetings with their members. The congregation emphasized on their website the significance of engaging in open discussions about crucial issues impacting the community’s hearts and minds.

Zohran Mamdani a vocal critic of Israel

Some members of the congregation, however, felt the invitation was a slap in the face due to Mamdani’s stance on Israel. He is a vocal critic of Israel and has called its actions in Gaza “genocide” and “apartheid.”

“I think it’s very clear that any group that wants Israel to be eliminated is not to be embraced by our congregation. It’s like inviting Yasser Arafat into our midst,” Elaine Kleinberg, a 25-year member of BCE, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

The synagogue reportedly received 400 registrations, and 82 members submitted questions. Senior rabbi Rachel Timoner said about half of the selected questions addressed the issue of Israel, Zionism and anti-semitism, according to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Timonder told JTA that Mamdani’s appearance would be followed by Repu blican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

One congregant, who requested anonymity, told JTA that he was still working on how he felt about Mamdani after the visit.

“The guy has a history of being pro-Palestinian and anti-Zionist, anti-Israel as a Jewish state. I am typical of this community, anti-the prosecution of the war by the current Israeli government. I’m against them, but I am for Israel as a Jewish state, and I’m not quite sure. He’s still sort of vague where he stands or not,” the congregant said.

Zohran Mamdani has faced criticism

Mamdani has faced criticism for failing to condemn the pro-Palestinian phrase “globalize the intifada” and for his support of the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions movement against Israel. He also supports free buses, city-owned grocery stores, rent freezes, no-cost childcare and and taxing big corporations and New York’s wealthiest.

In his statement on the two-year anniversary of the Oct. 7 attack, Mamdani said Hamas had committed a “horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more.” He also condemned Israel for launching a “genocidal war” and the U.S. government for being “complicit through it all.”

“The occupation and apartheid must end. Peace must be pursued through democracy, not war crimes, and our government must act to end these atrocities and hold those responsible to account.”

Mamdani’s mother is an Indian-born filmmaker, Mira Nair, who earned acclaim for her movies “Salaam Bombay,” “Mississippi Masala,” and “Monsoon Wedding.” She was reportedly raised in a Hindu family. His father is Mahmood Mamdani, an academic, author and political commentator. He is a Muslim and was born in Bombay, India, and raised in Kampala, Uganda.

Sean Kingston Sentenced To 3.5 Years In Prison: What Happened?

 

Rapper Sean Kingston has been sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison for orchestrating a $1 million fraud scheme in which he used his celebrity status to obtain luxury goods without paying for them.

Prosecutors said that between April 2023 and March 2024, Kingston used social media to lure sellers of high-end merchandise, including a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade, luxury watches, and a 19-foot LED television. He allegedly invited them to his Florida homes with promises of promotional exposure, but then sent fraudulent wire receipts instead of payment.

Court records revealed that victims often had to resort to lawsuits or police reports before receiving any money. A key piece of evidence was a text message Kingston sent to his mother, in which he instructed her to create fake receipts: “I told you to make a fake receipt.”

On July 19, 2024, rapper Sean Kingston and his mother, Janice Turner, were indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and five counts of wire fraud each. Prosecutors alleged the pair orchestrated a scheme to swindle sellers of luxury vehicles, jewelry, and other high-end goods using fraudulent documents and wire transfers. Authorities estimated that the duo obtained approximately $1 million worth of merchandise without paying. Each charge carried a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

The indictment followed a February 2024 lawsuit filed by Ver Ver Entertainment, which accused Kingston of failing to pay for luxury watches and other items. The lawsuit also alleged Kingston misrepresented his professional ties to Justin Bieber, claiming he could secure Bieber’s participation in promotional videos despite the fact that the two artists had not collaborated since their 2010 single “Eenie Meenie.”

On March 28, 2025, a jury found Kingston and Turner guilty on all counts. While Kingston was placed on house arrest under electronic monitoring and required to post a $700,000 bond—comprising his $500,000 home and $200,000 in cash—he was later held at the Federal Detention Center in Miami after being unable to secure the bond. Turner was immediately remanded into federal custody.

Turner, his mother were sentenced to five years in prison on July 23, 2025. Kingston, 35, was sentenced on August 15, 2025, to 3.5 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Australian actor Tristan Rogers passed away on Friday morning, August 15, 2025, at the age of 79, following a battle with lung cancer. His lung cancer diagnosis had been publicly announced in July 2025.

Born on June 3, 1946, in Melbourne, Victoria, Rogers built a career in both Australia and the United States. He was best known for his long-running role as Robert Scorpio on the ABC daytime drama General Hospital and for voicing Jake the Kangaroo Mouse in Disney’s animated film The Rescuers Down Under.

Rogers began his acting career on Australian television, appearing in series such as Bellbird, Number 96 (1974), and The Box (1975). He was a regular in the police drama The Link Men (1970) and also made guest appearances in Barrier Reef, Division 4, and the 1976 miniseries Power Without Glory. His film credits in the early 1970s included British titles such as Four Dimensions of Greta (1972), The Flesh and Blood Show (1972), and Sex Farm (1973).

In addition to acting, Rogers starred in the award-winning short film Opportunity Knocks, which later attracted interest for a feature-length adaptation. Beyond his Disney role, he also lent his voice to the 2015 Mad Max video game and appeared in commercials for brands including Outback Steakhouse, Foster’s Lager, Reebok, and Epson.

His television career spanned decades, with roles such as Harry, a bar owner, in the Canadian racing drama Fast Track (1997–1998). Since 2010, he has portrayed Lex Martin in the soap opera web series The Bay. In 2019, his portrayal of Doc in the Amazon series Studio City earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Digital Drama Series.

Five Al Jazeera journalists were killed on Sunday in what the network described as a deliberate Israeli airstrike on Gaza. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed one of the victims, Anas al-Sharif, was a Hamas leader operating under the guise of a journalist.

According to Al Jazeera, al-Sharif, fellow journalist Mohammed Qreiqeh, and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa died when a tent used by media personnel in Gaza City was struck. They had been stationed across from the Al-Shifa Hospital complex at the time.

The IDF alleged that al-Sharif led a Hamas terrorist cell and was involved in orchestrating rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and military forces. The military said it had previously released intelligence and seized documents from Gaza proving his affiliation with Hamas.

Al Jazeera dismissed the accusations, calling them “baseless” and “fabricated,” noting that both the network and al-Sharif had denied any terrorist links. Similar claims had been made by the IDF in October 2024, when it named al-Sharif among six journalists it accused of being militants.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) criticized Israel’s repeated pattern of labeling journalists as terrorists without offering credible proof. CPJ regional director Sara Qudah emphasized that journalists are civilians who must never be targeted and urged accountability for the killings.

In July, after being accused by the IDF of ties to Hamas’ military wing, al-Sharif told the CPJ that the allegations were retaliation for reporting that cast Israel in a negative light. He claimed Israel aimed to “assassinate” him both morally and physically.

Al Jazeera, funded by Qatar’s government, says 10 of its staff have been killed since the war in Gaza began in 2023. Israel has accused the channel of biased reporting and, in May 2024, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government voted to shut down its local offices, branding it an “incitement channel.” The network has consistently denied these allegations.

Israel launched its Gaza offensive after the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks in which 251 people were taken hostage and many civilians were killed, including at a music festival. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reports over 61,000 deaths in Gaza since the offensive began.

Last week, Israel announced plans to take control of Gaza City, a move that sparked criticism and prompted Germany to suspend military exports to Israel that could be used in the conflict.

Fort Stewart Shooting: Five Soldiers Shot At Fort Stewart

Authorities have identified Sgt. Quornelius Radford, a 28-year-old active-duty soldier from Jacksonville, Florida, is the suspect in a recent shooting at Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Radford, who enlisted in the Army in 2018 as an automated logistical specialist, is assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. He has no history of combat deployments, and officials say there were no prior behavioral concerns noted.

According to sources, the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute between Radford and one of the victims the previous day. On Wednesday morning, Radford reportedly brought a 9mm handgun—purchased legally in Florida in May—to the base. He followed one of the victims to a maintenance area and shot him in the chest before turning the weapon on four others.

Fellow soldiers quickly intervened, subduing and detaining Radford. He was apprehended at approximately 11:35 a.m., around 40 minutes after the gunfire began. Authorities recovered the firearm and multiple shell casings at the scene.

The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

Radford is currently in pretrial detention under the custody of the Army Criminal Investigation Division. He will face legal proceedings under the Army Office of Special Trial Counsel (OSTC), which functions similarly to a U.S. Attorney’s Office. The OSTC is now reviewing evidence and preparing formal charges, with a court-martial expected to follow.

Of the five soldiers injured, two were taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, while the remaining three received care at an Army medical facility. All victims are in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery.

Military leadership will ultimately determine whether charges are filed and what disciplinary action will be taken, in accordance with Department of Defense policies.
