Discover Why McDonald’s Opts Out of Serving Onion Rings Unlike Burger King

0

McDonald’s once ventured into uncharted territory with an unconventional menu item that left fans less than thrilled: the onion-themed dish.

During the 1970s, the fast-food juggernaut experimented with ‘onion nuggets’—crispy, batter-coated onion chunks designed as a vegetarian-friendly option. Despite its novelty, this quirky side dish failed to capture the hearts of customers.

Unexpectedly, a seemingly insignificant decision within the company marked the end of onion nuggets while paving the way for one of McDonald’s most successful products.

The unique, battered shape of the onion nuggets, which deviated from the familiar ring style popular at other eateries, didn’t resonate with diners. Sales were lackluster, and within a year, the item vanished from menus, never truly offering a competitor to Burger King’s offerings.

Legend has it that in 1979, a casual conversation sparked a revolutionary idea. Fred Turner, then-chairman of McDonald’s, proposed a pivot: “Let’s forget onions and try chicken instead.” This suggestion would soon lead to a menu staple that transformed the fast-food scene.

That offhand pivot sparked the creation of the Chicken McNugget – which officially launched nationwide in 1983 and went on to become one of the chain’s most iconic and profitable products.

Since then, the fast food giant introduced dipping sauces like Tangy BBQ and Sweet ‘N Sour, as well as a limited-time spicy version of their chicken nugget.

The menu item costs around $3.99 for a 6-piece and $10.49 for a 20-piece, making it one of the cheaper options at the chain restaurant.

But the legacy of the onion nugget isn’t lost among fast food fans. Disappointed customers took to social media, some sharing their disappointment that they’ll never try an onion nugget.

‘Bring them back,’ one Reddit user said. ‘McDonald’s should do a promotion where they bring back a bunch of old items.

‘These, the McTasty, McBrat, the salads, fruit and yogurt parfait, snack wrap. There are so many great discontinued items.’

‘I’ll stick with my chicken rings, thank you very much,’ another said, referencing Burger King’s fan-favorite offering.

Burger King is testing out a new version of their onion rings in Canada, swapping minced onions with a prickly coating for an actual onion with a smoother, less breaded outside.

Customers shared their reactions on Reddit, with one user saying, ‘I actually like their current onion rings when they’re fresh.’

‘I like the current onion rings,’ another wrote. ‘No need fixing what isn’t broken. If I want a thick sliced onion ring where the onion pulls out of the breading on the first bite, I can go to just about any sit down restaurant.’

Others reacted to the price of the upgraded item, which rang up well over $5. Although the current onion rings vary in price based on location, a medium costs about $3.

There’s no word regarding when, or if, they will make their US debut, but the chain has been slowly improving its restaurants amid growing customer complaints. That includes updating its iconic Whopper sandwich.

Although the Whopper has been a restaurant staple for decades, diners complained that the quality has slowly been on the decline. As a result, Burger King elevated the item with new packaging and more premium ingredients.

This new burger still includes freshly cut onions and tomatoes, lettuce and pickles – along with what the company describes as ‘better tasting’ mayonnaise.

The chain also announced staff members would be required to wear AI-powered headsets that monitor how friendly employees are to customers. These headsets feature an AI voice, called Patty, that can send feedback to managers.

For example, if Patty detects an employee hasn’t said keywords like ‘welcome’, ‘please’ or ‘thank you,’ it can flag it to their boss.

The changes were met with massive customer approval, forcing the chain to hire 60,000 new employees to meet growing demand.

A tragic domestic altercation in Louisiana escalated into a shooting spree early Sunday morning, claiming the lives of eight children across various residences. The grim series of events concluded only after the perpetrator was fatally stopped by officers during a pursuit, as reported by local authorities.

According to Chris Bordelon, spokesperson for the Shreveport Police Department, the young victims were between 1 and 14 years of age. The harrowing incident also left two adults wounded, bringing the total number of people shot to ten.

Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed his profound shock, stating, “I am at a loss for words; my heart is profoundly shaken. It is unimaginable that something of this nature could unfold.”

Describing the aftermath, Bordelon noted, “This is a complex scene, the likes of which many of us have never encountered.”

The man stole a car at gunpoint a half block away from the original crime scene, leaving the scene of the shootings and getting pursued by police, according to Bordelon.

A shootout between police and suspect occurred after a traffic stop in Bossier Parish, resulting in the suspect’s death.

“This is a tragic situation — maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” said Tom Arceneaux, mayor of the city in northwestern Louisiana with about 180,000 residents. “It’s a terrible morning.”

Officials said they were still gathering details about the crime scene, which extended across three locations. Some of the children shot were related to the suspect, according to Bordelon.

Louisiana State Police say their detectives have been asked by Shreveport police to investigate the officer-involved shooting.

In a statement, state police say no officers were harmed in the shooting.

Tragic I-4 Tire Blowout Sparks Fatal Rollover: Safety Tips to Prevent Disaster

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – An unfortunate incident on Interstate 4 has resulted in the death of a passenger after a tire blowout led to a fatal crash, authorities confirmed.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred early Sunday morning when a 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer was heading westbound on I-4. The vehicle’s right rear tire suddenly blew out, setting off a chain of events that ended in tragedy.

The blowout caused the SUV to violently flip over multiple times, eventually crashing onto the left shoulder and slamming into the median guardrail, troopers reported.

During the chaotic sequence, one passenger was thrown from the vehicle, landing in the eastbound center lane of the highway.

Tragically, a 2017 Lexus CT traveling in the eastbound center lane struck the ejected passenger, according to the troopers’ account.

The TrailBlazer’s driver and six passengers were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, investigators said.

The passenger who was ejected was taken to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where the person was pronounced deceased.

The Lexus driver and passenger were not taken to the hospital and remained at the scene, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Man Who Fired 59 Shots Into Bar, Injuring Employee, Receives Sentencing

A Colorado judge has handed a 96-year prison sentence to a 33-year-old man for a shooting incident at a bar, where he fired 59 shots, hitting a bartender in the neck, following his ejection from the premises for fighting.

In February, Jimmy Cazares was found guilty of multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder, illegal possession of a weapon, and criminal mischief, as reported by the Weld County District Attorney’s Office. On Wednesday, Judge Annette Kundelius of the Weld County District Court issued the lengthy sentence.

Authorities in Greeley, located approximately 60 miles northeast of Denver, were dispatched to Wyler’s Pub and Brew on November 30, 2024, following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered a bartender who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, one of which was to the neck. Another woman, though not physically shot, was harmed by being in the direct path of the gunfire, according to prosecutors.

Subsequent investigations revealed that Cazares was expelled from the bar for engaging in a fight. About 40 minutes later, he returned and unleashed a barrage of 59 bullets into the establishment from outside.

During the sentencing hearing on Wednesday, one of the victims recounted, “My life changed forever that night. I never could have imagined I was being shot at. I firmly believe I died for a brief moment.”

Cazares also was found guilty of drug-related charges.

“It’s only by the grace of God that no one was killed that night,” Deputy District Attorney Lacy Wells said. “He gunned down two women at a local, community establishment and clearly has no respect for human life.”

The defendant was facing up to 134 years in prison.

“Damage didn’t stop when the bullets stopped,” Wells said. “These victims of this horrific and senseless crime will live with the mental, emotional and physical damage the rest of their lives.”

Rediscovered Photos of Rory McIlroy and Meghan Markle Ignite Controversy Online

In 2014, before Meghan Markle became a member of the British royal family, she had a memorable encounter with professional golfer Rory McIlroy. The specifics remain somewhat of a mystery, but during the viral ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that year, McIlroy nominated Meghan, who was then starring in “Suits.” She accepted the challenge on the condition that McIlroy himself would pour the ice water over her. He agreed, and after the chilly event, the two headed to the Fitzpatrick Hotel for drinks.

What transpired afterward is left to speculation, but it evidently didn’t develop into anything significant. Shortly after, McIlroy began dating Erica Stoll, who would become his wife, while Meghan would have her first encounter with Prince Harry a couple of years later. However, the past tends to follow celebrities, and in March 2026, photos of Meghan and McIlroy’s 2014 meeting re-emerged, sparking a wave of criticism toward Meghan. An X user commented, “Rory McIlroy dodged a massive bullet when he threw Meghan to the curb. She was clearly on the hunt, but Rory didn’t take the bait,” alongside three photos, two of which showed McIlroy with Markle.

One photo captured them enjoying drinks at a table, while the other depicted them standing together before the challenge, with a cooler visible in the background. A commentator added some shade, saying, “I can only imagine what an unhinged circus Masters would turn into if MM managed to trap McIlroy,” in a reply. Meghan isn’t universally adored among royals, so the reaction wasn’t entirely surprising.

In one, the two were seated at a table enjoying some drinks. The other showed the two next to each other before the infamous challenge, evidenced by the cooler in the background. “I can only imagine what a unhinged circus Masters would turn into if MM managed to trap McIlroy,” a netizen shadily replied. Meghan isn’t exactly the most popular royal, so we aren’t shocked here.

Meghan Markle has been accused of using Rory McIlroy to promote herself

Given the vastly different paths their lives took, Meghan Markle and Rory McIlroy’s ice bucket challenge encounter has largely been relegated to an insignificant past. After all, she married a prince, and he became a sensation in the golfing world. However, Meghan was far from a major star when she rubbed shoulders with McIlroy, who had just won his first Open Championship. She reportedly saw an opportunity there and jumped at the chance.

At least that’s what author Tom Bower claimed in his 2022 book, “Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War Between the Windsors” (via Page Six). “[She was] keen to use their close relationship to promote herself,” he wrote. Bower also contended that McIlroy’s night with Markle negatively impacted his performance on the golf course the next day. “Worse for wear after a hectic night, he fell back to 101st place,” Bower writes.

After the poor performance, McIlroy reportedly drove back to New York to see Meghan. “He refused to sleep as usual near the golf course to be ready the following day,” Bower claimed. However, Meghan played down what happened between her and McIlroy, telling Focus in 2018 that she actually initially rejected his nomination. “Rory McIlroy and I are friends, and when he nominated me I told him I couldn’t do the challenge because I was traveling and in NY,” she said. But he retorted that he was also in New York and made it happen. “We had a blast,” she gushed.

Pastor Paul Enenche Urges Nigerian Leaders to Pursue Peaceful Governance Ahead of 2027 Elections

Dr. Paul Enenche, the Senior Pastor at Dunamis International Gospel Center, has delivered a compelling message directed at Nigeria’s political leaders, emphasizing the need for genuine approval from the populace they aim to govern. He articulated these thoughts during a recent sermon focused on the themes of governance, elections, and public accountability.

In his sermon, Dr. Enenche underscored that true leadership should arise from the willingness of the people, rather than through coercion or deceitful tactics. He criticized the practice of using wealth to force oneself into power against the people’s wishes, calling such actions disgraceful.

“Is it not a shame,” he questioned, “when people express that they do not want you, yet you still spend money to impose yourself on them? Leadership should be about being wanted and accepted,” he stated emphatically.

He continued his critique by addressing the unethical practices of election bribery and manipulation, highlighting the disgrace in attempting to hold power when clearly rejected by the electorate. “If they don’t want you, step aside. Don’t run for office. Don’t manipulate elections to lead. Don’t resort to violence for power. Leadership should be a reflection of the people’s choice,” Dr. Enenche urged.

His message serves as a reminder that the legitimacy of political leadership should be determined by the people’s desire and not through forceful imposition.

He further warned against silence in the face of wrongdoing, calling on Nigerians and pastors to speak boldly against injustice and poor leadership.

According to him, silence in the face of evil is equivalent to consent, urging citizens not to be afraid to speak out whenever necessary.

His message adds to the growing discussions on leadership accountability and electoral conduct ahead of the 2027 elections.

Tragic Incident Claims Lives of Eight Children, Including 18-Month-Old Toddler

0

In a heartbreaking incident on Sunday morning, a serene neighborhood in Louisiana was shattered by a tragic shooting, leaving eight young children dead. The Shreveport Police Department responded to a domestic disturbance call shortly after 6 a.m., where they discovered that ten individuals had been shot, with eight of them succumbing to their injuries.

The victims, who ranged in age from 18 months to 14 years, were predominantly children related to the shooter, according to police, though precise details remained undisclosed. The community is grappling with the enormity of this loss, as the youngest lives taken were barely beginning.

Amidst the chaos, two adult women survived, despite sustaining head injuries in the attack. Reports from KTBS revealed that a young boy also present during the shooting managed to escape by leaping from a rooftop, a desperate act to evade the harrowing violence.

This senseless massacre spanned three locations, with the most devastating scene unfolding on the 300 block of West 79th Street near Linwood Avenue. This area, tragically close to a Baptist church, became the backdrop for an unimaginable crime that has left the community in mourning.

The horrific ordeal unfolded across three different locations. The first, 300 block of West 79th Street near Linwood Avenue, was where the children were massacred in a home just a stone’s throw away from a Baptist church.

The unnamed male suspect then performed a carjacking at that location and led officers on a high-speed chase, traveling a quarter-mile away to Harrison Street, between Wallace Avenue and Bernstein Avenue.

He then drove to the third location, in Bossier Parish, on Brompton Lane near Long Acre Drive. He was shot and killed by police there.

The crime scene was described as ‘rather extensive’ by police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon. ‘We do believe him to be the only individual that fired gunshots at these locations here,’ he added.

Bordelon said the name of the suspect will be released, but the victims’ next of kin have to be notified first.

He said some of the children in the home ‘were his descendants,’ but did not provide further details.

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux solemnly addressed the shaken community after the shooting.

‘We have a hurting community, we have hurting families, we have hurting police officers, coroners personnel, fire departments, sheriff’s people,’ Arceneaux said.

‘This affects the entire community. So we all mourn with these families.

‘It’s a Sunday morning. I ask all of you who are listening, who might be able to pray at your services this morning, not just for this family, for all the victims.’

The mayor added that the incident is ‘maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport.’

‘So, right now we’re going to process the information and it’s in very good hands,’ he continued.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Speaker Mike Johnson shared his condolences after the ordeal on Sunday morning.

He wrote: ‘Heartbreaking tragedy in Shreveport this morning — 8 children were senselessly killed and multiple others were injured. My team is in touch with local law enforcement as more details emerge.

‘We’re holding the victims, their families and loved ones, and our Shreveport community close in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. And we are grateful to the Shreveport, Bossier, and Louisiana State Police for their swift response.’

Shreveport, about five hours outside of New Orleans, is a high crime area known for violence, according to Neighborhood Scout.

One in 82 people are a victim of a violent crime in Shreveport, compared to one in 192 in the state of Louisiana, the report showed.

This is a breaking news story.

Shocking Crime Unveiled: Boyfriend Fabricates Abduction After Brutal Murder of Girlfriend

Inset: Aaron Malone (Barry County Sheriff’s Office). Background: Aaron Malone and Aspen Lewis (Facebook/Aaron Malone).

A Missouri man has been found guilty of murder after brutally killing his girlfriend and leaving her body concealed in a wooded area. Her remains, hidden beneath a layer of leaves and branches, were discovered after he had falsely reported her missing, suggesting she might have been abducted, according to prosecutors.

Aaron Malone, 24, was found guilty last week by a Jasper County jury of first-degree murder, armed criminal action, abandonment of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence in connection with the disappearance and death of his 24-year-old girlfriend Aspen Lewis in November 2024.

According to court records, the man, identified as Malone, contacted authorities to report his girlfriend, Lewis, as missing and expressed his belief that she had been kidnapped.

However, investigators found numerous discrepancies in Malone’s account during their inquiries, as detailed in the probable cause affidavit that led to his arrest.

During an interaction with Malone concerning Lewis’s disappearance, officers noticed a “significant blood stain on the road behind Malone’s vehicle.” They also found blood evidence on his truck, and it appeared that the gravel driveway had been tampered with, as noted in the affidavit.

The affidavit further mentioned that pieces of jewelry were discovered scattered on the ground. Surveillance footage captured Malone’s truck arriving at the home around 11:35 p.m. on November 24, 2024, followed by audible screams shortly thereafter.

Malone’s truck was caught on video leaving the residence with him inside around 1:35 a.m. and then returning at 4:10 a.m., not long after he called police to report Lewis as missing.

Police interviewed Malone and asked him about the blood and surveillance footage, to which he said he would take investigators to Lewis’ body, per the affidavit. As police pulled up to a rural location Malone had directed them to, they observed “the remains of a burnt pink” shirt in the roadway. Lewis was found “off the roadway” moments later.

“The victim had extensive head trauma,” the affidavit said. “In a post Miranda interview … Aaron Malone admitted to an altercation taking place and disposing of the body.”

During his trial, prosecutors presented evidence showing how Malone “repeatedly assaulted the victim in the face, strangled her, and shot her before leaving her body in the woods in Barry County,” according to the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.

It took jurors about an hour to convict Malone after a three-day trial, per the AG’s office. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 9.
