King Charles Reminds Harry and Meghan Who’s Boss in the UK

King Charles III has moved to clarify Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s standing within the royal fold, issuing a statement that made plain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would not regain royal status after relocating back to the United Kingdom. The move reportedly caught the couple off guard. Coming shortly after a report claimed two members of the royal family were unsettled by Harry and Meghan’s return, Charles sent a letter on September 7 to senior figures in the U.K. government and military spelling out that his son and daughter-in-law would continue to be treated as private citizens. “To help avoid doubt or confusion, the King has directed that the following information be shared. … There is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” the letter stated, according to People. In practical terms, that leaves Harry and Meghan free to continue their independent projects. “In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests,” the King’s letter added.

According to BBC News, a representative for Prince Harry and Meghan said the Sussexes had not expected to be restored to official royal roles, but “were a little surprised not to have been told about this [letter] in advance.” Earlier, People reported that the couple would not automatically receive royal status again and that Harry would need to speak directly with King Charles if he and Meghan sought any formal reinstatement.

Following reports of the Sussexes’ high-profile return across the Atlantic, a source told OK! USA that one reason Harry and Meghan left the United States was to pursue a “half-in, half-out” arrangement with the royal family. Still, the exact nature of Harry’s future role has not been settled. “What’s particularly interesting is that nobody appears to have sat around a table and formally resurrected the original half-in, half-out proposal,” the insider said. Other reports have suggested the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may face significant hurdles if they hope to secure any kind of hybrid royal position.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are undecided on how long they’ll stay

Weeks before King Charles III sent the letter addressing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal status, an insider claimed the Duke of Sussex was considering a “private royals plus” role once back in the United Kingdom. Such an arrangement, however, would come with conditions. “It needs them to be much more ‘private’ than ‘working,’ and be seen at family occasions,” the source told The Times on August 23. A major complication remains Harry’s strained relationship with Prince William. “That requires William and Catherine to say ‘yes please’ and how on earth does that happen?” the insider told the outlet.

Another question shaping Harry and Meghan’s future relationship with the royal family is how long they intend to remain in the U.K. The couple have enrolled their children in school there, while also retaining their California home. “It’ll be an extended period of time — it could be six months, it could be a year, it could be more — I don’t think even they know yet,” the source told The Times. Days later, another source told NBC News that the Sussexes planned to stay long enough to bring their dogs with them, but had not made a permanent move back to the United Kingdom.

One major factor determining how long Harry and Meghan’s return to the U.K. will last is the state of their marriage and how it will be impacted by the move. Brittany Provance, Editor-in-Chief of Royal News Network, told Nicki Swift that having a getaway home in Portugal could help. “But I’m not sure if that will be enough, especially if the reception in Britain will likely be icy at best, especially from the royals,” the royal expert said.

10 So-Called Healthy Trends a Personal Trainer Says Should Disappear

0

From ice baths and pricey supplements to the latest wellness gadgets, social media is packed with people insisting better health comes in a bottle, a tub or a device — often one they happen to be promoting.

For anyone genuinely trying to feel fitter, stronger or healthier, separating useful advice from unnecessary hype can quickly become a confusing and expensive minefield.

So before you invest in a water remineraliser or sign up for another 30-day cleanse, YOU asked personal trainer and nutritionist Michael Ulloa to cut through the noise and identify the health hacks and trends you really do not need.

Ulloa has grown a social media audience of 330,000 by sharing practical health and fitness advice on Instagram and TikTok, with much of his content focused on helping followers make sense of an industry crowded with quick fixes, fads and so-called miracle solutions.

And for anyone who shudders at the thought of plunging into freezing water, there is some very welcome news.

Michael Ulloa is a personal trainer and nutritionist with a social media following of 330,000.

Supplements

While supplements can be a healthy way to support a balanced diet, Ulloa says that we need to prioritise a food first approach to health and nutrition.

According to him, ‘We’ve stopped looking at supplements for what they actually are – which is to supplement a healthy diet.’

What’s more, ‘A lot of the supplement industry is sketchy and unregulated which means a lot of the time supplements don’t contain what they’re saying they contain.’

So which supplements should you be taking?

‘There’s only a few that I ever do really recommend: creatine monohydrate, a protein supplement and vitamin D if you live in the UK. Then obviously supplements for deficiencies like iron can be helpful.’

Organic food

The ‘organic’ label has become a buzzword in supermarket advertising and while there are some instances where organic produce can be the better option, that’s not necessarily always the case.

He says, ‘I think a lot of people believe that organic means pesticide-free and more nutrient-dense fruit and vegetables, and a lot of the time it isn’t.’

'Organic' has become a buzzword in supermarket advertising, but it doesn't necessarily mean that produce is any better for you.

‘Organic’ has become a buzzword in supermarket advertising, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that produce is any better for you.

While the benefits of organic produce might include the type or amount of pesticide used in farming, for Ulloa it’s largely an excuse for supermarkets to hike the prices.

The real issue, according to Ulloa, is that the majority of people simply aren’t getting enough fruits and vegetables.

So, never mind the organic label and instead just focus on packing in your five a day; frozen and tinned vegetables can be just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts.

Early morning workouts

Sleep in and rejoice!

For the longest time early morning risers have been praised for squeezing in an early morning gym session before work but, according to Ulloa, there are no extra benefits to an early morning workout.

‘I think there’s a belief when it comes to fitness and nutrition that, in order for something to be beneficial, it has to be quite painful to do. But working out early in the morning is no better for you than exercising in the afternoon or evening,’ says Ulloa.

‘I certainly wouldn’t compromise sleep if it can be done at another time.’

Cold plunges and ice baths

While ice baths and cold plunges have been trending on social media, the research on their health benefits is actually quite sparse.

‘It might help with reducing perceptions of soreness around endurance exercise, but other than that the benefits are actually quite mild. Claims about reducing inflammation and helping to detox just aren’t true.’

Ulloa says that research on the health benefits of cold plunges and ice baths are actually quite sparse.

Ulloa says that research on the health benefits of cold plunges and ice baths are actually quite sparse.

However, while there’s little evidence that a cold dip can help to support fitness goals, Ulloa does point to the mental health benefits.

Ultimately, he suggests: ‘If you enjoy it and it makes you feel good, amazing. Otherwise, don’t force yourself into an ice bath because all these magical health benefits are being claimed.’

Visible abs

Influencers online might well be promoting ‘skinny culture’, but restricting food and focussing on making your body as small as it can be is not healthy.

Ulloa is clear, ‘The large majority of people would not healthily be able to sit at a body fat level where you can see abs.’

For most people, abs and body fat are genetically dependent.

Ulloa says: ‘For the large majority of people to achieve that look, they would have to adopt some incredibly restricted eating and addictive exercising behaviours which can cause knock on effects for stress levels, hormone function and menstrual cycle.’

Calorie counting

Contrary to decades of dieting guides, Ulloa says, ‘The large majority of us don’t need to worry about counting calories.’

Instead, he suggests that we need to focus on the basics and implement a more comprehensive approach to our diets.

‘The first one that springs to mind is fibre intake which tracks very closely to health longevity.’ That means prioritising things like chia seeds, berries and lentils.

Running

While Ulloa advises that it’s wise to do some form of strength training, he’s clear that this doesn’t have to be running.

‘If you think that running is awful and you hate it, don’t bother trying to get into it because it’s not something you’ll stick to long-term.’

His advice? Delete Strava and find some form of exercise and movement that you do enjoy.

Hate running? No problem. Instead, focus on exercise that you enjoy (or that you tolerate at the least).

Hate running? No problem. Instead, focus on exercise that you enjoy (or that you tolerate at the least).

Giving up sugar

It’s trendy to bash sugar, but according to Ulloa, there’s far more nuance than that. For example, fruit has sugar in it, but it’s also full of fibre and macronutrients.

In fact, he says, ‘I’m of the opinion that every single food can be part of a healthy diet, the danger is really just in the dose.’

His advice.

‘Should we eat loads of sugar? No, absolutely not. But that doesn’t mean we should ban it and scare people away from something that is in most foods, including foods that can be very nutritionally dense.’

You don’t have to love the gym

Not all is lost if the gym isn’t your thing.

‘I’ve worked with clients who have never stepped foot in a gym and who do exercises at home with resistance bands and dumbbells’, says Ulloa. ‘There’s a lot of equipment that you can play around with, but that doesn’t mean you have to be there.’

Instead, it’s about finding exercise that you can implement into your life and not setting unrealistic expectations of becoming a gym bunny.

Filtered water

‘Tap water is something that gets a really bad rap at the moment,’ according to Ulloa.

From myths that it won’t hydrate you efficiently or that it doesn’t contain all of the minerals that you need, tap water in the UK is more than fine – especially alongside a varied and healthy diet.

While social media promotes water filters and remineralisers, Ulloa says regular tap water will do just fine.

While social media promotes water filters and remineralisers, Ulloa says regular tap water will do just fine.

So why the obsession with filtered water?

‘I think it mostly stems from content creators in the US as we tend to follow suit with a lot of their health trends,’ suggests Ulloa. ‘But we don’t need any fancy equipment to remineralise it, or hydro water, tap water is fine.’

And electrolytes?

‘If you’re a very sweaty person when you exercise, you’d probably benefit from an electrolyte supplement. But if you’re just an average person living in the UK, you probably don’t need an electrolyte supplement.’

Jimmy Kimmel Blasts Trump in Fiery Return to Late Night

0

Jimmy Kimmel wasted no time taking aim at President Trump as he returned to late-night television after his summer break — just hours after reports surfaced suggesting his long-running show could end next year.

The comedian stepped back onto the stage Tuesday night for the first time in three months, with the episode marking both his return from summer hiatus and a major milestone: the 4,000th installment of Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Sources told Page Six that his 24-year television run is set to end in 2027, but insisted his criticism of Trump was unlikely to be the reason.

Kimmel, 58, did not address the reports about the future of his late-night run. Instead, he used his 15-minute opening monologue to deliver a sharp and sustained critique of the president.

‘Donald Trump and I have one thing in common,’ he told the audience. ‘We both accomplished nothing all summer long.’

The Jimmy Kimmel Live host then moved through a series of Trump and White House moments, saying that when he left for vacation in June, the ‘country was a mess.’

He rattled off the war with Iran, soaring gas prices, high inflation and Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, who ‘was either alive or dead, nobody seemed to have any idea which.’

Kimmel then mocked Trump’s botched $20 million Reflecting Pool makeover, branding the landmark a ‘big green slop hole’ while showing images of its murky green waters.

‘Now, only three months later, I’m so pleased to report that thanks to your favorite president, DJ Jazzy Donald, every one of those problems has been solved, we made America great again!’ the comedian said sarcastically.

Earlier this week, the Reflecting Pool found itself in yet another mess after powerful storms left the landmark surrounded by toppled fencing, fallen trees, dirty rainwater and debris – just days after Trump claimed it was ‘almost completely fixed.’

It was the latest setback for a project that began in April to repair the pool and turn it ‘American Flag Blue’ – a renovation the White House said would take just a few weeks.

‘The president had three months, spent 20 million dollars and couldn’t even get a pool cleaned,’ Kimmel said during Tuesday’s show, before showing recent photos of the Reflecting Pool covered in tarps and seemingly filled with dark liquid.

‘I thought he was supposed to drain the swamp, he turned it into gravy instead,’ he said, joking that perhaps Trump was pumping the pool with Diet Coke instead – a quip that drew laughter from the crowd.

‘How are we supposed to win the war with Iran when we can’t even win the war against algae for God sake,’ the comedian added.

Kimmel then turned his focus to Trump’s popularity with Americans, declaring: ‘Trump’s poll numbers and pool numbers are at all-time lows. Only 33 percent.’

He claimed that with just one in three registered voters approving of his job performance, the president is doing everything he can to ‘keep us from voting in the midterms.’

Kimmel then stunned the crowd with a joke about 35-year-old Natalie Harp, one of Trump’s top personal aides, after her intimate handwritten letters to the president were revealed – including one that read: ‘You are all that matters to me.’

‘Would a president with historically low popularity number play golf instead of working over the weekend?’ Kimmel said.

‘I don’t know, would Natalie Harp drive a golf cart in high heels? You bet your chicken tenders they would,’ he added, as an image of Harp driving a golf cart in heels flashed behind him.

The host then zeroed in on the week’s biggest developments: ‘On Friday, fuel prices hit an all-time high. The Strait of Hormuz is still closed… at this point, Blockbuster Video has a better chance of reopening than the Strait of Hormuz,’ he said.

Kimmel said Trump, who declared victory on the first day of the war nearly six-and-a-half months ago, is now dismissing the ongoing conflict as ‘small potatoes.’

‘No one knows more about small potatoes than a man who is built like a sack of wet tater tots,’ he joked.

With Tuesday’s episode airing just after Labor Day weekend, Kimmel flashed a 2024 post from Trump in which he claimed Americans were suffering through the holiday thanks to Kamala Harris.

At the time, the president wrote: ‘Under Comrade Kamala Harris, all Americans are suffering during this Holiday weekend – High Gas Prices, Transportation Costs are up and Grocery Prices are through the roof.’

Earlier this week, the Reflecting Pool found itself in yet another mess after powerful storms left the landmark surrounded by debris

‘We can’t keep living under this weak and failed “Leadership…”‘ Trump added.

In response, Kimmel pointed to gas prices on Labor Day 2024 under Harris, which he said stood at $3.33 a gallon. Now, he said, prices have ballooned to $4.15 a gallon – the highest Labor Day gas prices in US history.

He described Trump as ‘crazier than ever,’ pointing to the barrage of AI-generated images flooding his social media feeds and noting that he posted 37 times on Sunday alone.

Kimmel’s heated monologue ended with a compilation video of what he called the best and worst moments of Trump’s summer 2026, before the main show finally got underway.

Tuesday’s show followed the shocking news that the decades-long late-night run is reportedly set to end in 2027, according to Page Six.

An insider told the publication: ‘His contract is not getting extended.’ Kimmel was famously suspended by the network a year earlier.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for ABC Entertainment said: ‘This information is inaccurate – any reports about the future of the show at this point are purely speculative.’

One insider claimed that new Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro wouldn’t be influenced by pressure from Trump and his supporters.

Has Jimmy Kimmel’s political comedy kept you watching, or has his focus on Trump become too much?

‘He’s not afraid of the administration… Josh isn’t folding,’ they claimed.

Another source at ABC claimed that a desire to cut costs may have influenced the network to not renew Kimmel’s contract, stating: ‘It wouldn’t have anything to do with Trump.’

D’Amaro was also reportedly offering early-retirement packages to executives as part of a restructuring and push to cut costs.

Ben Shelton Stuns Carlos Alcaraz in Latest-Ever Finish in U.S. Open History

0

New York — Ben Shelton brought Carlos Alcaraz’s U.S. Open title defense to a dramatic halt in the tournament’s latest finish ever, edging the Spaniard 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7) after a grueling battle that finally ended at 3:33 a.m. Wednesday.

The five-set showdown stretched 4 hours, 28 minutes, and snapped Alcaraz’s 18-match winning streak at Grand Slam events.

Shelton now moves on to face No. 11 seed Frances Tiafoe, who staged his own stirring comeback Tuesday to reach a third U.S. Open semifinal, rallying past Alex Michelsen 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6).

With Shelton and Tiafoe set to meet, the United States is assured of a finalist on Sunday as American men continue their pursuit of a first major championship since Andy Roddick won the U.S. Open in 2003.

Alcaraz had also been part of the previous record for the latest U.S. Open finish, defeating Jannik Sinner in a 2022 quarterfinal that wrapped at 2:50 a.m. before he went on to claim his first Grand Slam crown at age 19.

Thousands of fans stayed to the end and Shelton benefited from a home-crowd boost even against the popular Alcaraz, with fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium chanting his name along with “USA! USA!”

“It’s incredible,” Shelton said. “I always say that this is the greatest sports city in the world, I say that this is the greatest stadium in the world. I’m just hoping that my best friend and my sister over there don’t have to be at work at 6 a.m. in three hours.”

Three of the four singles quarterfinals went to match tiebreakers on a marathon day, which started with Aryna Sabalenka edging Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova to keep her hopes alive of a third straight U.S. Open title.

Alcaraz will have to wait for his next one.

Instead it was Shelton reaching his third major semifinal, having gotten to the final four in the 2023 U.S. Open and 2025 Australian Open.

He seized control by winning nine straight games from early in the second set until he had a 3-0 lead in the third. But Alcaraz, in his first tournament since April after returning from a right wrist injury, battled back even as he vomited before the start of the final set.

Alcaraz ran off four straight points in the tiebreaker to go ahead 5-3, but Shelton came back behind some of his powerful serves that can exceed 140 mph, along with some mistakes from Alcaraz. Shelton eventually finished it off with a 146 mph serve his opponent couldn’t get back.

Alcaraz is now 15-2 in five-set matches. He won his seventh Grand Slam title at the Australian Open to start this year not long before his injury.

Grocery Store Manager Rescues Toddler From Oncoming Traffic in Dramatic Video

A supermarket manager in Mexico is being credited with a dramatic rescue after security video showed him hurling himself onto a roadway Sunday to pull a three-year-old girl away from oncoming vehicles.

Luis Cruz, who manages the Super King El Rey del Ahorro grocery store, raced after the child as she wandered into the busy street, then grabbed her and dropped to the pavement just moments before a silver minivan passed dangerously close.

The child had bolted from the Puebla supermarket at about 2 p.m. local time after slipping free from her mother’s grasp, according to Mexican news outlet Tribuna Noticias.

Video from the scene shows a woman initially chasing the girl, but she lost her footing and fell before she could reach the child.

Video shows Cruz quickly tackling the girl to the ground moments before a minivan crossed the lane she would have entered had Cruz not stopped her.

As car horns honk, Cruz grabs the girl, pulling her backwards as they both tumble safely to the ground in the lane closest to the store while the mini van screeches to a halt in the middle lane.

The grocery store, according to Tribuna Noticias, awarded Cruz with 20,000 Mexican pesos – roughly $1,184 – for his heroics.

Cruz also reportedly said he didn’t think before taking action, and that as a father himself he was driven by paternal action. He also, Tribuna Noticias reported, urged parents to keep a watchful eye on their children.

Jeremy Corbyn Set to Double His Money on London Home Sale

0

Jeremy Corbyn, the socialist former Labour leader, appears set to make a substantial return on his North London property after accepting an offer from a buyer.

The 77-year-old politician’s three-bedroom terraced house, described in its listing as “charming,” had most recently been advertised for £700,000 and is now marked as sold subject to contract.

The final sale price has not yet been disclosed, but Land Registry records show Mr Corbyn bought the home in 2007 for £363,000, meaning he could come close to doubling his original investment.

Mr Corbyn, the long-serving Islington North MP who entered Parliament in 1983 and later founded the left-wing Your Party, had previously attempted to sell the same property for £1 million three years ago.

This year, the North London home returned to the market at £800,000 in March, before a series of reductions saw the asking price lowered to £780,000 in April, £750,000 in May and finally £700,000.

During his time as Labour leader between 2015 and 2020, the 77-year-old was frequently seen walking out of the address to face questions from TV cameras and members of the public.

Many neighbours on his street in Islington, North London, are also thought to be staunch socialists and were supporters when he was Labour leader, so may be sad to see him leave.

Asked what it was like to live next to Mr Corbyn, one said: ‘He’s very nice’.

Corbyn has lived there with his wife Laura Alvarez, a Mexican businesswoman and fair trade coffee importer.

The £700,000 price tag puts it well above the average house price sale for England of £291,000 and above the London average of £663,000.

Photos from inside the property show artwork on the walls including one with the slogan ‘Peace: Build a Bridge Not A Wall’, and a stylised picture showing numerous red flags.

The house has a 26ft back garden, three double bedrooms, two reception rooms, all set over three storeys.

The short property description said the address is in ‘a quiet street located close to the many amenities of Seven Sisters and Holloway Road and is a short walk to the green space of Finsbury Park as well as the underground and overground stations, with great links to the City and West End’.

The property, registered as Band E for council tax so liable for a £2,577 annual bill, has a gas boiler and an Energy Performance Certificate rating of D

In 2023, in an interview with the Evening Standard, Mr Corbyn described life in north London.

He said: ‘Walking around with me is very slow — someone will always stop me in the street to follow up on or raise new issues, so I never leave home without my notebook.

‘The fascinating part of it is watching families grow up and people moving in and out. People from all over the world make their home here, so there’s a lovely atmosphere. It’s a great place. It’s home.’

When describing his dream street, he said: ‘I like the one I’m on. It’s very friendly and very mixed.’

In 2018, Mr Corbyn and his partner were refused planning permission to extend the ground floor with Islington Council saying it would ‘harm the appearance, rhythm and integrity of the terrace and the area’.

He instead carried out changes which did not require planning permission – including installing mirrored glass in windows facing the street to stop passers-by looking inside.

In 2019, the address was targeted by climate campaigners who glued their hands and chained themselves to Mr Corbyn’s garden fence outside, demanding he declare a ‘climate emergency’.

Socceroo Star Faces Ban After Alleged Positive Cocaine Test

Socceroos World Cup forward Cristian Volpato could be facing disciplinary action from the national team after NSW Police said a second test allegedly detected cocaine in his system.

The 22-year-old Sassuolo attacker has been handed a $722 fine over a July traffic stop on Sydney’s Anzac Bridge, which came only weeks after he had represented Australia at the World Cup.

Volpato has told Football Australia officials he did not knowingly take the substance. He is understood to have produced a negative result at a private clinic in Australia, while Sassuolo also said a later test conducted in Italy came back negative.

Despite those results, NSW Police confirmed that their secondary oral fluid analysis returned a positive reading.

‘On Tuesday 1 September 2026, a 22-year-old man was issued a Traffic Infringement Notice for drive motor vehicle with illicit drug present in oral fluid,’ NSW Police said.

Football Australia said it was seeking independent verification of the latest information.

The report stated he would face no further police action.

His national team availability for Australia remains unresolved, with friendlies against Brazil this month and January’s Asian Cup approaching.

Football Australia said it had been made aware of information concerning a reported secondary oral test result relating to one of its players.

‘We are currently seeking independent verification,’ the governing body said in a statement.

‘The matter is being managed in accordance with Football Australia’s established protocols. To protect the integrity of this process and ensure procedural fairness, we will not comment further.’

Volpato could be referred to FA’s disciplinary and ethics committee, which has the power to suspend him from national team action.

No football suspension has been announced.

Police first stopped Volpato’s BMW Coupe at about 11.05pm on July 23, alleging he was travelling at least 25km/h above the 60km/h speed limit.

He returned a negative breath test and received a speeding infringement notice.

Officers stopped him again in the early hours of July 24, allegedly for travelling at 109km/h in the same zone.

That stop produced the alleged positive roadside cocaine reading. Volpato received another speeding infringement notice and his international driver’s licence was suspended for six months.

Socceroos coach Tony Popovic declined to say whether he would select the forward for the Brazil matches when questioned in Sydney on Tuesday.

‘I don’t know exactly the details of what happened and it would be wrong to speculate on what happened,’ Popovic said.

‘There is a process that’s playing out at the moment and we need to follow that process.’

The case has drawn comparisons with A-League Women goalkeeper Teresa Morrissey, who received a three-match FA ban last year after testing positive for cannabis while driving.

Morrissey said she had used cannabis for medicinal purposes. Her legal team argued the punishment was disproportionate given her public profile.

Volpato joined Australia’s World Cup squad after switching his international allegiance from Italy shortly before the tournament.

Born and raised in Sydney, he represented Italy at under-19 and under-20 level before committing to the Socceroos, who were eliminated by Egypt in the Round of 32.

He has made three appearances for Sassuolo this season but was unable to finish their latest match against Bologna because of a suspected hamstring injury.

Carlos Alcaraz Endures Vomit-Stained 3:33 A.M. US Open Nightmare

Long after midnight behind the baseline at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the clocks pushed past 2:50 a.m. Wednesday had already arrived. For most of New York, it was a school day, with dawn creeping closer by the minute. Inside the arena, however, several thousand fans — some boozy, some barely awake, many simply swept up in the madness — watched Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton carry the US Open into extraordinary territory.

No match in tournament history had ended this late. And rarely had these two produced anything quite so dramatic. After nearly four hours and four-and-a-half punishing sets, this quarterfinal still would not let go.

It was draining, dazzling and, for Alcaraz, visibly brutal. Before the deciding set began, the defending champion appeared to be sick into his towel. Still, the contest rumbled on, refusing a simple ending and driving inevitably toward a fifth-set tiebreak.

At last, at 3:33 a.m., after four hours and 28 minutes of ferocious tennis, Shelton ended it in thunderous fashion. A 146mph ace sealed the night, prompting the young American to stick out his tongue, pull Alcaraz into a long embrace and finally absorb the biggest victory of his career.

The final score — 6-7 6-1 6-3 1-6 7-6 — captured the wild rhythm of a match that lurched one way and then the other as night turned into morning. Between two of tennis’s most explosive young stars, it was Shelton’s power, nerve and booming serve that ultimately carried him through.

What a player. What a night. What a shame someone had to lose. And what a travesty most of the world had to sleep through it. Forget, for a moment, the incredible theater on this long night in New York. What are we doing? Who wins from starting a game after 11pm – beyond a few insomniacs, TV viewers on the other side of the world, and Shelton’s semifinal opponent Frances Tiafoe?

An ecstatic Ben Shelton celebrates beating Alcaraz in the latest ever finish at the US Open

Alcaraz has now played in the two latest finishes in US Open history. Back in 2022, en route to his first title in New York, the Spaniard beat Jannik Sinner at 2:50am. How we missed him over those four months when his wrist betrayed him. With this defeat, Alcaraz’s title defense is over. With this win, Shelton has ensured an American will be in the final and a new name will be on the trophy.

It was at 11:05pm local time – after more than 13 hours of action and a final plea to influencers not to use Arthur Ashe Stadium for a personal photoshoot – Shelton and Alcaraz were finally ready to bring the curtain down on Day 11.

They had just over three and half hours to wrap this up or risk breaking new ground. They failed. Of course they failed. This showdown with Shelton had all the ingredients to be a blockbuster, another marathon tug of war.

But the 23,000 fans who forked out for this night session – including Seal, Simone Biles and Kevin Hart – knew the risk they ran. Unlike at Wimbledon, there is no 11pm curfew here. Only last week, Venus Williams’ first-round match kicked off at 12:13am – a US Open record – and on his way to the quarterfinals, No 1 seed Alexander Zverev has already clocked off at 1:55am and 2:15am.

Shelton had played beyond 2am in the second round and there was nothing sleepy about the way he began this match.

For 12 games and most of a breathless first-set tiebreak, the American went toe-to-toe with Alcaraz. Time and again, this contest delivered on its promise of swagger and vicious shot-making.

And yet it felt so predictable, so ominous, when – at 5-5 – Shelton was broken to love. How often do we see the very best find a way just when a set teeters on a knife edge?

This time, though, Shelton did not yield. At least not immediately. He broke back before taking control of the tiebreak.

One astonishing rally, in which the American pulled Alcaraz from back to a front like a yo-yo, sent Arthur Ashe into a frenzy. Only one member of the crowd was not lost in rapture: Shelton’s father, Bryan, who gestured for his son to calm down.

The 23-year-old heeded his advice and looked set to steal the set when he led 5-3 in the tiebreak. But then, Alcaraz found something from somewhere. Four points later, he had drawn first blood.

That was the trigger for many inside Arthur Ashe to call it a night. Who could blame them for thinking the dye was cast? Thankfully Shelton didn’t see it that way – even after squandering four break points in the opening game of the second set.

The American’s pressure finally told two games later and, this time, Alcaraz had no immediate answer. So Shelton turned the screw, breaking three times in succession to take the set 6-1. It was 12:56am, we had a game on our hands and the stadium speakers blasted out Jay Z’s reminder that this ‘city never sleeps.’

You’d do well to doze off in earshot of ‘DJ Mode’ at the best of times. Let alone with this quarterfinal so finely poised.

And yet, by the time Alcaraz and Shelton climbed out of their chairs, more and more fans were on their way home. At this point, nowhere was more sparsely filled than courtside where a single seat can cost up to $5,000.

Those who remained in the posh seats were treated to more majesty at either end of the third set: first, a remarkable rally that saw Shelton stretch and contort every fiber of his 6ft 4in frame.

After 18 shots, Alcaraz eventually claimed the point before cupping his hand behind his ear. And then, half an hour later, the Spaniard won a battle of touch around the net. Even Shelton’s girlfriend – soccer star Trinity Rodman – rose to her feet to applaud.

Unfortunately for Alcaraz, neither made a difference as Shelton held firm to take the third set. This time, his father was his biggest hype man. At the other end, Alcaraz bent at the waist. It was 1:43am and those four-and-half months off appeared to be catching up with the No 2 seed. He was grimacing and chuntering and soon Alcaraz faced more break points.

This time, though, he saved them and then, out of nowhere, he put dent after dent in Shelton’s serve. Alcaraz won five of the next six games to send this to a decider. It was 2:20am and we were headed toward more history on Arthur Ashe.

How much had that taken out of the defending champion? As thousands of fans – many of whom had migrated from the nosebleeds to the lower bowl – bayed for more, Alcaraz appeared to vomit into his towel.

And yet, as this match ticked towards a fifth hour, the Spaniard seemed to find a second – third? fourth? – wind. He opened up a break-point opportunity and repelled Shelton as the American banged at the door. By the time Alcaraz sent this to a tiebreak, it was 3:21am. At long, long last. Something had to give. In the end, it was Alcaraz who broke.
