Gavin Newsom Spotted Mingling With A-List Celebrities at Malibu Hot Spot

0

California Gov. Gavin Newsom was seen mingling with some of Hollywood’s biggest names in Malibu on Friday night as tensions continued over Paramount’s proposed merger.

Newsom was photographed leaving the celebrity-favorite restaurant Nobu with actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Tobey Maguire.

According to TMZ, the group had dinner at the iconic Japanese restaurant, which is co-owned by De Niro.

De Niro has been among President Trump’s most outspoken celebrity critics. During a podcast interview in February, he urged Americans to “resist, resist, resist.”

The actor has also praised Newsom’s confrontational approach toward Trump on social media. De Niro endorsed Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

The high-profile dinner took place as questions continued to mount over whether Paramount could leave California amid a legal fight surrounding its proposed $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and 11 other state attorneys general have sued to stop the transaction, citing antitrust concerns.

Paramount CEO David Ellison has warned that the company could move its studio operations out of the Golden State if the dispute remains unresolved, fueling concerns about the possible loss of thousands of entertainment jobs.

Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass are among the officials calling on the two sides to reach a settlement.

The dinner also came as speculation continues over whether Newsom might pursue the presidency in 2028. He has not announced a campaign.

A recent Bowling Green State University/YouGov poll showed Newsom receiving 14% support from Democrats surveyed about a hypothetical 2028 presidential primary, compared with 17% for former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Undocumented Rideshare Driver Accused of Rape Had Prior Arrest

A rideshare driver who authorities say entered the United States illegally has been arrested in Maryland on charges of raping a teenage girl. Police are warning that there may be additional victims after learning he had previously faced similar allegations in New York.

Abdoulaye Dia, 36, was taken into custody Wednesday after a teenage girl reported that he raped her in a parking lot the previous day, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police. Dia used the Empower rideshare platform.

The girl, who is under 18, told officers at a local hospital that the driver took her to a parking lot in Silver Spring, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC, where he allegedly assaulted her.

Investigators used information from the rideshare app to identify Dia. Officers later arrested him nearby in Lanham.

“Based on the circumstances of the investigation, detectives are concerned there may be other victims,” the Montgomery County Police Department said.

Dia faces charges of first-degree rape, kidnapping, second-degree assault and third-degree sex offense.

The Department of Homeland Security later told Fox News that Dia is a citizen of Guinea and had been arrested in New York in June on similar charges.

DHS said Dia entered the United States illegally through Arizona in December 2023.

In the New York case, Dia was charged with sexual abuse by forcible compulsion, forcible touching of another person’s sexual or intimate parts, injuring a child under 17 and sexual abuse without consent.

Court records in that case have not been made public because of the nature of the allegations. A spokesperson for the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office told local ABC affiliate WJLA that prosecutors sought to have Dia held on bond, but a judge instead ordered his release under supervision.

Empower said in a statement to the Daily Mail that it does not employ or contract with drivers.

“Drivers using our software are our customers. They set their own rates and get 100% of their fares and pay Empower for access to our software,” the company said.

Empower said it conducted a background check, sex-offender check, driving-record review, Social Security trace and global watchlist search on Dia on July 16. The company said it used the same screening provider as Uber and Lyft and that no incidents were found.

“The Montgomery County Police Department reached out to Empower about this incident. Empower, as is our policy, asked law enforcement what Empower could do to assist their investigation and immediately provided all information requested,” the company said.

Empower operates as an alternative to Uber and Lyft, allowing drivers to set their own fares and keep 100% of the money paid by riders.

The platform is available in Atlanta, Baltimore, Charlotte Metro, Dallas-Fort Worth, the DC Metro area, Houston, New York City, Tampa, Orlando and Greensboro, North Carolina.

Empower’s website says the service does not provide rides to minors. Uber permits teens ages 13 to 17 to travel without a guardian in select cities with permission, while Lyft offers unaccompanied minors rides through its Lyft Teen program.

The circumstances that led to the alleged assault in Maryland have not been shared. Dia appeared in court on Thursday and was ordered to remain behind bars without bail, according to records.

It does not appear that he has retained an attorney or entered a plea in the charges against him. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not indicated whether it will issue a detainer against Dia or deport him.

The Daily Mail has reached out to ICE, DHS and the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office for comment and more information.

Prince Andrew Says He Is ‘Living in Limbo’ Over Jeffrey Epstein Investigation

0

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor feels he is “living in limbo” while police continue investigating his links to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, according to friends.

The former Duke of York has been staying at Marsh Farm on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk since being removed from Royal Lodge in Windsor and arrested on February 19.

Andrew was arrested on the morning of his 66th birthday over allegations that he leaked sensitive information to Epstein while serving as a British trade envoy between 2001 and 2011.

Friends say he is “making the most” of his new life in Norfolk and feels some relief at having left the Windsor “bubble”.

Earlier this month, a Republican congressman accused Andrew of committing sex crimes in the United States.

Thomas Massie made the allegation during a speech in the House of Representatives, saying: “We want the perpetrators of these crimes to be investigated and prosecuted.”

Andrew has denied committing any sexual offences.

Mr Massie was speaking during an attempt to compel the US government to publish unreleased material from the Epstein files. Some portions of the documents have been released under President Donald Trump’s administration, but many passages remain heavily redacted.

A source close to the former prince told The Telegraph: “While Andrew remains under investigation after being arrested by Thames Valley Police seven months ago, he has effectively been living in limbo.”

Although he is not subject to formal restrictions, the source said Andrew “cannot live his normal life” and is unable to “stray far beyond his home”.

The source added: “In the meantime, Thames Valley Police seems to be no nearer being able to prove an allegation of misconduct in a public office, for which Andrew was detained back in February.”

The US Department of Justice is reportedly delaying the investigation into Andrew by refusing to release key unredacted documents from the Epstein files.

Andrew has reportedly had no contact with Thames Valley Police since his initial arrest. He is also said not to have spoken to his brother, King Charles, for some time, although he remains in contact with his siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward.

Thames Valley Police said in May that it was expanding the investigation to include allegations of sex trafficking.

Andrew is alleged to have shared information such as reports of official visits to Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore, along with a confidential briefing on investment opportunities linked to the reconstruction of Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

The investigation is understood to be receiving resources comparable to those assigned to a major crime inquiry, with specialist sexual offence investigators included in the team.

However, the case took an unexpected turn in August when an unnamed woman who reportedly alleged that she spent a night with Andrew in Windsor after Epstein flew her to Britain for sex was said to have reconsidered giving evidence against him.

The Mail on Sunday reported in May that the woman did not want to “risk losing her privacy” by filing a formal complaint with detectives investigating the trafficking allegations.

But her American lawyer, Bradley Edwards, said this month his client had gone from a ‘hard no’ to a ‘maybe’ in assisting the criminal case.

The woman says she was in her 20s when, at Epstein’s request, she spent a night with Andrew at Royal Lodge in Windsor in 2010. It is alleged she was also given a tour of Buckingham Palace and tea afterwards.

Mr Edwards said he had spoken to British police about interviewing his client in the US, but nothing had been agreed.

He added: ‘She has gone from a hard no to a maybe. Her main concern is to protect her child and she doesn’t want her kid being harassed.

‘If those issues can be addressed it could happen. She is thinking about it. I think she should testify because what happened was wrong. But I’m not going to push her. It has to be her choice.’

Mr Edwards, who has represented more than 200 alleged Epstein victims, previously sued Andrew on behalf of the late Ms Giuffre, who alleged she had sex at 17 with the former duke of York in London, New York and on Epstein’s Caribbean island.

Andrew settled for a reported £12million before the case went to trial but did not admit liability.

He has always denied any allegations of wrongdoing.

Lane Kiffin Faces a Furious Crowd of Thousands at Ole Miss

0

Lane Kiffin was met with a storm of boos when he made his long-awaited return to Ole Miss on Saturday night ahead of LSU’s grudge match with the Rebels.

The showdown marked the first time the polarizing Tigers head coach had set foot in Oxford, Mississippi, since his dramatic move to the SEC rival in November.

Kiffin stunned the college football world by leaving Ole Miss for LSU after guiding the Rebels to the College Football Playoff.

Hostilities have simmered ever since, with Rebels fans gathering along the streets outside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium to await Kiffin’s arrival with his new team.

Escorted by several police officers, Kiffin stepped off the LSU bus roughly 90 minutes before kickoff and was immediately met by a deafening chorus of boos and jeers from thousands of Ole Miss supporters.

He remained composed and waved toward the crowd, while scattered cheers from traveling LSU fans were barely audible above the hostility directed at Kiffin.

Mississippi state officials said they were deploying the largest law enforcement presence ever assembled for a college football game in Oxford. The town has about 26,000 permanent residents, but authorities expected roughly 100,000 people to descend on the city, many without tickets to the 64,000-seat Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Speaking to ESPN on the field shortly after arriving, Kiffin said: ‘It’s an exciting day. Two great teams. Two top 10 teams. Electric crowd and great energy around it.

‘This is what is great. SEC football. What an exciting thing for both programs to be on this stage.’

Asked about the reception as he got off the bus, Kiffin added: ‘We’ve done this thing before. It’s kind of fun. You just embrace it. Both teams are going to have a lot of fun tonight.’

Any remaining uncertainty over Kiffin’s standing among Ole Miss fans disappeared during Saturday’s live broadcast of ESPN’s College GameDay.

Kiffin appeared via satellite from the team’s hotel in Oxford, with his face projected onto a large screen in front of a packed crowd of students and Rebels supporters.

Almost instantly, the crowd broke into chants of ‘a**hole.’

‘I really appreciate you guys gaslighting them with this,’ Kiffin told the ESPN panel.

The crowd also arrived prepared with a series of mocking signs for the College GameDay broadcast.

‘I’m 10 and I make better decisions than Lane,’ read one sign held by a young Ole Miss fan.

Another young woman jokingly implied that she and Kiffin had once dated, holding a sign that read: ‘Why is my ex here?’

Kiffin did try to defuse the tension at a few moments, once telling the panel: ‘It’s not about me. Both teams have great players, great coaches, [I] have a lot of respect for their program.’

Meanwhile, chants of ‘a**hole’ continued to rage in the background.

It was the latest in a growing buildup for the first top-10 matchup between No. 7 LSU and eighth-ranked Ole Miss since 1962.

It started when Kiffin left the Rebels to take the LSU job and a $91 million contract just as the team he had coached for six years was days away from its first appearance in the College Football Playoff.

Kiffin wanted to stay through the playoff, but Ole Miss moved on to coach Pete Golding and advanced to the CFP semifinals. LSU finished 7-6, capped by a loss in the Texas Bowl.

The off-field storylines haven’t stopped since. Kiffin’s comments about whether Black players could be recruited to Ole Miss, lawsuits alleging Ole Miss transfers owe big money for reneging on their NIL deals and LSU’s now-abandoned defiance of rules against rostering former pro players have only brightened the spotlight for this one.

LSU threw another wrinkle into the mix by saying midweek that quarterback Sam Leavitt was ‘doubtful’ to play, sparking immediate fan accusations of gamesmanship. He’s been upgraded since and is expected to start.

Kiffin himself acknowledged there could be ‘hatred’ in the stands Saturday. Security has been dramatically increased as authorities expect 100,000 people in Oxford, a town whose school-year population of about 25,000 is virtually all students.

LSU leads the overall series between these border rivals 65-39-3, but Ole Miss has won three of the past five meetings, including last year in Oxford. The Tigers opened as 2 1/2-point favorites after giving up just two offensive touchdowns through two games, but they will be challenged by a pair of Heisman Trophy contenders in Ole Miss’ backfield: quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy.

The winner improves to 3-0 on the season — and gets savory bragging rights.

Chicago Police Investigate 69 Car Break-Ins in Bronzeville Lots

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — Chicago police are investigating after suspects smashed the windows of at least 41 vehicles in a South Side parking lot early Saturday.

A second nearby lot was targeted soon afterward, where at least 28 additional vehicles were damaged.

The first incident occurred in Bronzeville near East 33rd Street and South State Street shortly before 2:15 a.m., police said.

Four people arrived at the lot in a black SUV and shattered the windows of 41 vehicles. Investigators had not determined whether anything was stolen. The group left the scene in the SUV.

The parking lot is operated by the Illinois Institute of Technology.

“Illinois Tech Public Safety responded alongside the Chicago Police Department to reports of vehicle break-ins in a campus parking lot early Saturday morning,” an Illinois Tech spokesperson said in a statement. “The university has increased patrols in campus parking areas, and we are working with affected vehicle owners directly. The safety and security of our students and campus community is always our top priority, and we are continuing to work with CPD as it investigates the incident.”

Scattered Sunday Storms Expected Across the Area This Weekend

0

Rain chances increase even more next week.

ORLANDO, Fla.Tonight

East-northeast winds will continue pulling isolated showers inland from the Atlantic this evening and through the overnight period. Most of the activity is expected to weaken before reaching areas west of the Interstate 95 corridor. Coastal rain chances will range from 20% to 30% tonight, with probabilities decreasing farther inland. Overnight lows will settle in the mid-70s beneath partly cloudy skies.

Sunday

Sunday is shaping up to closely resemble Saturday, with an upper-level low remaining just west of Central Florida. Counterclockwise circulation around that system will continue funneling moisture northward from the south. As a result, scattered sea-breeze thunderstorms are likely during the afternoon, generally moving from east to west. High temperatures should reach around 90ºF.

Next Week

Showers and thunderstorms could become more numerous early next week as additional moisture streams into Central Florida from the south, combining with instability associated with the upper-level low. Forecast models are also suggesting the season’s first fall cold front may arrive by late week. The front is expected to move across Central Florida early Thursday, bringing lower humidity and slightly cooler temperatures from Friday into the weekend.

Man Arrested After Allegedly Threatening to Shoot Girlfriend

0

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Rashad Breon Jones, 20, was arrested September 18 after he allegedly battered his girlfriend and threatened to shoot her.

According to a Gainesville Police Department officer’s report, Jones became angry with the victim at about 9 a.m. on September 16. He allegedly flipped over an air mattress while she was lying on it, causing her to fall, and then choked her while threatening to shoot her with a pistol.

The victim told police that Jones let go of her before reaching under a couch for the gun. She said she told him she needed to submit job applications, then left quickly and drove to GPD headquarters to report the incident. She reportedly told officers she feared for her life because Jones had fired a shot at her during an earlier incident in Jacksonville.

Jones was taken into custody on September 18.

A witness told police she had seen Jones allegedly commit battery against the victim on previous occasions. The witness also said she had seen Jones conceal a pistol in his clothing and attempt to hide it in several locations.

Jones, who is listed as a Jacksonville resident, faces charges of domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic battery. He has no local criminal history. Judge Luis Bustamante ordered Jones held without bail pending a hearing on the State Attorney’s Office request to keep him jailed without bail through trial. If the motion is denied, bail will be set during that hearing.

Security Breach Near White House After Man Drives Onto Sidewalk

0

A dramatic security incident unfolded outside the White House on Saturday afternoon when a man drove onto the sidewalk and demanded to speak with President Donald Trump, prompting an immediate Secret Service response.

Law enforcement and military personnel rushed to the area near Lafayette Square after the vehicle mounted the sidewalk at 16th and H streets Northwest shortly after 12:15 p.m.

Officers detained the unidentified driver, photographed him in handcuffs and surrounded the vehicle while conducting a search.

The man reportedly insisted on speaking directly with Trump. However, the president was not at the White House when the incident occurred.

According to his public schedule, Trump was spending Saturday at Camp David in Maryland.

The incident triggered an extensive security operation along the northern edge of the White House complex. Secret Service vehicles raced to the scene, while authorities temporarily shut down nearby roads.

‘Out of an abundance of caution, local roads were shut down, and the vehicle was swept with negative results,’ a Secret Service spokesperson said.

The agency said the search found no dangerous materials inside the vehicle.

Secret Service officers detained the driver, closed nearby roads and searched his vehicle before taking him to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The man was later taken to a nearby hospital for a ‘mental health evaluation,’ the Secret Service said.

Authorities have not released the man’s identity. They also have not said what led him to drive onto the sidewalk or why he allegedly wanted to meet Trump.

Images from the scene showed a large law-enforcement presence, with officers inspecting the vehicle and restricting access to part of the surrounding area.

The intersection is directly beside Lafayette Square and falls within the tightly secured zone surrounding the White House.

The National Park Service says the White House area includes parkland and nearby sidewalks extending north to H Street and west to 17th Street.

The Secret Service credited its officers with quickly securing the area.

‘We appreciate the swift actions of our Secret Service Police Officers and are grateful to the Metropolitan Police Department for their prompt response,’ the agency spokesperson said.

Saturday’s episode follows a series of security incidents near one of the most heavily protected buildings in the United States.

The investigation into exactly what led to the incident remains ongoing.

Authorities have not announced criminal charges against the man or publicly detailed what he allegedly said while demanding to speak with the president.

Just months earlier, on May 23, gunfire erupted near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street Northwest, close to the White House complex.

Two people were struck in that incident before the alleged shooter, later identified as 21-year-old Nasire Best, approached the White House complex and pulled a firearm from a bag, according to previous reports.

Best allegedly fired several shots before Secret Service personnel opened fire, killing him.

That shooting was itself preceded by another vehicle-related scare in March, when a van crashed through a barricade near Connecticut Avenue and H Street at approximately 6:30am.

The Secret Service said at the time that the driver was detained and questioned.
