Ex-SLED Investigator from Alex Murdaugh Case Dismissed by Charleston County Sheriff’s Office

0

Ryan Kelly, previously a distinguished investigator with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), was dismissed from his role as chief inspector at the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office on June 8, as confirmed by the agency to News Media.

In his capacity, Kelly was responsible for managing the Office of Professional Standards, which is tasked with overseeing internal affairs. His termination came in response to allegations of harassment and misconduct.

He had been a crucial SLED agent during significant investigations, including those surrounding Alex Murdaugh.

Kelly’s firing occurs as the legal community braces for Murdaugh’s upcoming retrial, potentially putting scrutiny on the evidence and investigative work in cases where Kelly was involved.

Asked whether Kelly’s termination could affect the upcoming retrial, Murdaugh’s lead defense attorney, Dick Harpootlian, declined to comment.

“Not at this time,” Harpootlian told News Media.

During Murdaugh’s initial 2023 trial, Kelly testified about the September 2021 roadside shooting in which Murdaugh initially claimed he had been shot by an unknown assailant while changing a tire.

Kelly, then a SLED senior special agent, was the lead investigator on that incident. Prosecutors used the episode to show jurors what they described as Murdaugh’s pattern of deception after the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul.

Jurors heard evidence that Murdaugh later admitted he had arranged for Curtis “Eddie” Smith to shoot him so his surviving son, Buster, could collect a life insurance payout.

The roadside shooting was separate from the June 2021 murders, but it became a key part of prosecutors’ broader case against Murdaugh.

Murdaugh, 58, was convicted in March 2023 of murdering his wife, Maggie, 52, and their 22-year-old son, Paul, at the family’s sprawling hunting estate in Colleton County in June 2021.

He was sentenced to life in prison, but his lawyers later pushed for a new trial, arguing that the jury had been improperly influenced by former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill.

The South Carolina Supreme Court reversed the denial of Murdaugh’s new-trial motion on May 13 and sent the case back to the circuit court.

Murdaugh has denied killing Maggie and Paul. The pair were found shot to death near the dog kennels at the family’s Moselle estate, a sprawling property in South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Prosecutors argued Murdaugh killed his wife and son to distract from his crumbling legal and financial world as years of thefts and lies were closing in on him.

His defense team insisted he was a loving husband and father who had been wrongfully accused after investigators zeroed in on him too quickly.

Although Murdaugh’s murder convictions were overturned, he remains behind bars on separate financial-crime convictions after admitting he stole from clients and his former law firm. Prosecutors have said they intend to retry him on the murder charges.

Country Music Star Apologizes Following Dramatic Hotel Incident

0

Country music sensation Bailey Zimmerman has found himself in hot water, extending a public apology amid criminal charges for allegedly wreaking havoc in his New Mexico hotel room, resulting in an estimated $16,000 in damages.

The turmoil for the 26-year-old artist unfolded after he abruptly canceled a highly-anticipated performance at the Sandia Resort and Casino in Albuquerque on May 27, attributing the cancellation to ‘illness.’

However, according to an arrest warrant, Zimmerman was reportedly displaying clear signs of intoxication during the pre-show sound check, even going as far as to allegedly tumble off the stage.

Following these events, Zimmerman was instructed to vacate the premises. Nonetheless, he’s accused of leaving behind significant destruction in his hotel room, including a shattered phone, a hole punched in the wall, and an unpaid $400 bar tab.

Currently, Zimmerman is facing accusations of criminal property damage and fraudulent service acquisition. This legal predicament emerges merely 17 months after he grabbed headlines for a notorious off-key, intoxicated performance in Mexico.

An arrest warrant obtained by the Daily Mail was issued June 18 with no bond hold, and four days later Zimmerman filed a demand for a speedy trial.

In a statement to TMZ, Zimmerman said, ‘First things first, I want to apologize to the Pueblo of Sandia and to everyone at Sandia Resort & Casino. I never meant for any of this to come across as disrespectful.

The Daily Mail has contacted Zimmerman’s representative for comment.

‘I am deeply sorry for my actions that transpired. I respect your community and the hospitality and appreciate the opportunity that was given to me to perform on Native Land.

‘I take full accountability for everything that happened and I am sorry to anyone who feels hurt or disrespected.

‘To my fans who bought tickets and showed up expecting a performance, I am so sorry, you deserved better from me.

‘I understand that being a musician comes with big responsibilities, both on and off stage, and I know that I fell short that day. I am reflecting on the disappointment and concern that I caused.

‘I am taking this legal matter seriously. I am committed to doing the work necessary to learn and grow. Thank you to my fans for holding me accountable and for understanding that I am human. I do not take your support for granted.’

Hotel security allegedly informed police that Zimmerman seemed to be inebriated throughout the evening of the canceled performance, per the affidavit.

Law enforcement say Zimmerman stumbled and fell down at his sound check, during which he is also accused of such behavior as hurling cymbals, flinging the microphones to the floor and tipping over part of the drum set.

He is said to have repeatedly stormed offstage and then exited the sound check altogether, in the version of events laid out by the affidavit.

Zimmerman was later ordered to leave the resort - but is accused of causing huge damage to his hotel room including breaking a phone, piercing a hole in the wall, and leaving a $400 unsettled tab for alcohol

Zimmerman was later ordered to leave the resort – but is accused of causing huge damage to his hotel room including breaking a phone, piercing a hole in the wall, and leaving a $400 unsettled tab for alcohol

While waiting for his car to return to the resort, he allegedly spat in the direction of a member of security staff, according to the authorities.

Although he supposedly bewailed the fact he had to take a white SUV rather than a black one, he is claimed to have climbed into the vehicle anyway.

He allegedly had a bloody knee once he arrived at the resort, by which point his state was such that one of his shoes slipped off and he walked while leaning against one of the people accompanying him, the authorities claimed.

Zimmerman’s show that night was canceled and a statement was issued on his Instagram page that read in part: ‘I have not been feeling well and have tried to power through, but I’m not able to give you all the show you deserve.’

Meanwhile the affidavit alleges that he was jettisoned from the hotel, which provided a bus to convey him away from the premises.

Zimmerman supposedly refused to comply and hotel staff resorted to calling the police, after which he agreed to board the bus, law enforcement said.

Only the following day did housekeeping arrive at his room and discover it had allegedly sustained about $16,000 worth of damage.

Along with the unpaid $400 alcohol tab Zimmerman supposedly ran up, two chairs are said to be missing and the carpet is said to have been stained.

Zimmerman is facing charges of criminal damage to property and falsely obtaining services. This comes just 17 months after Zimmerman went viral for an off-key drunk performance in Mexico. He’s seen in April 2024

Among the damaged items are – according to law enforcement – a television, a phone, two chairs, a coffee table and more than one of the walls.

In January 2025, Zimmerman apologized to fans after performing drunk at Luke Bryan’s Crash My Playa festival in Mexico.

He was brutally mocked for singing off-key and knocking over the mic stand.

Days later, he issued an apology to his followers on Instagram and confessed that he was drunk during the performance, stating that he was ’embarrassed’ and wanted to be ‘truthful’ with his fans.

He said, ‘I’d like to talk about something that’s been eating me alive. Last weekend, down in Cancún, Mexico, I’m sure everybody’s seen the videos of me playing absolutely awful and singing absolutely awful and I feel like you guys deserve an explanation from me because you’ve had my back through the highs and lows and through every mistake.

‘I got up on stage, and I was too drunk to play. And I sang awful, I played awful. Nobody got the show that they wanted or paid for. And I’m disappointed in myself.

‘I want to show you guys the person that I truly am. So I’m just asking for a little bit of grace. Man, growing up is interesting. It’s not an excuse, but man, thank you to everybody that’s got my back.

‘Thank you for staying, thank you for showing me love and grace, and we’re gonna crush this year. But yeah, I just wanted to say I’m sorry. I fricken’ love you guys more than anything in the world and I don’t want to lose you. So forgive me, and I love you.’

In December 2025, Zimmerman exclusively told The Daily Mail that the 2025 mishap had ‘changed’ his life for the better – and revealed what he’s doing to ensure it never happens again.

‘It actually was really good for me because it’s changed my life,’ he revealed in an interview with the Daily Mail.

‘I’ve kind of grown up a lot since then and a lot more focused, and all the things that something like that will do to somebody. So yeah, life has been really good.’

Since the incident, Zimmerman said he has taken a different approach to drinking – explaining that he’s now drinking in ‘moderation’ and not mixing business with pleasure.

6 Best No-Equipment Exercises to Boost Strength After 60 Without Weight Training

0

Looking to enhance your strength after the age of 60 without resorting to weights? A seasoned coach recommends six effective bodyweight exercises you can incorporate into your routine.

>

While lifting weights is a popular method for boosting strength as you age, it’s far from your only option. When selected wisely and executed with precision, bodyweight exercises can provide ample resistance to challenge your muscles. Techniques like slowing down your repetitions, incorporating pauses, extending your range of motion, focusing on single-leg positions, and maintaining longer holds can transform an equipment-free session into a surprisingly robust workout.

The primary distinction lies in how resistance is applied. Weights exert external pressure on the body, while bodyweight exercises rely on maneuvering your own weight through different movements. This approach not only engages your muscles but also enhances balance, coordination, joint control, posture, and core strength. For adults over the age of 60, such exercises can feel particularly practical, as they mirror everyday activities like standing, stepping, pushing, bracing, and transitioning from floor to feet.

Another advantage of bodyweight training is its simplicity and adaptability. With no equipment to set up or machines to adjust, you can seamlessly integrate these exercises into your day—whether in the morning, between errands, following a walk, or on those days when a rigorous workout feels overwhelming. The ease of integrating regular bodyweight exercises means you can consistently send the body the signals necessary to improve strength over time.

Even after 60, the ideal bodyweight exercises should emulate the intensity of strength training. They should push large muscle groups, offer supportive positions for your joints, and make the final repetitions truly count. The following six exercises target the lower body, upper body, hips, core, and overall posture, enabling you to build strength effectively without lifting a single weight.

Chair Squat

Chair squats train your quads, glutes, hamstrings, hips, and core while giving you a clear target for each rep. The chair helps you control your depth and makes the movement easier to repeat with good form. This exercise builds strength for standing up, sitting down, climbing stairs, and moving with more confidence through the day. To make it harder, slow down the lowering phase or pause lightly above the chair before standing.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, hips, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand in front of a sturdy chair with your feet about shoulder-width apart.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Push your hips back toward the chair.
  4. Bend your knees and lower with control.
  5. Tap the chair lightly with your hips.
  6. Press through your feet to stand tall.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Sit-to-stands, tempo chair squats, pause chair squats, bodyweight squats.

Form Tip: Tap the chair lightly instead of fully relaxing at the bottom.

4 Daily Exercises To Regain Muscle Tone Better Than Gym Workouts After 55

ncline Push-Up

Incline push-ups train your chest, shoulders, triceps, core, and glutes. Raising your hands on a wall, counter, or sturdy surface lets you build pressing strength while keeping your body aligned. This move works like a bodyweight bench press because your upper body pushes against resistance while your core keeps the rest of your body steady. Lower the surface over time as your strength improves.

Muscles Trained: Chest, shoulders, triceps, core, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Place your hands on a wall, counter, bench, or sturdy elevated surface.
  2. Step your feet back until your body forms a straight line.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Lower your chest toward your hands with control.
  5. Bend your elbows to at least 90 degrees if your strength and shoulders allow.
  6. Press through your hands to return to the starting position.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 6 to 12 reps. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Wall push-ups, counter push-ups, knee push-ups, full push-ups.

Form Tip: Keep your elbows angled slightly back and press through your whole hand.

Reverse Lunge

Reverse lunges train your glutes, quads, hamstrings, hips, calves, and core. Each leg works on its own, which gives the movement a stronger strength and balance challenge than many two-leg exercises. The reverse step often feels smooth and controlled, making it a strong option for building lower-body strength after 60. Use a wall or chair for light support if needed.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, hips, calves, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  3. Step one foot back into a lunge.
  4. Lower your back knee toward the floor with control.
  5. Press through your front foot to return to standing.
  6. Complete all reps, then switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 10 reps per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Assisted reverse lunges, split squats, alternating reverse lunges.

Form Tip: Keep your front foot grounded and stand tall between reps.

5 Slow Exercises That Restore Lower Back Strength Better Than Deadlifts After 60

Glute Bridge Walkout

Glute bridge walkouts train your glutes, hamstrings, lower back, hips, and core. Starting from a bridge position puts tension through the backside of your body, then walking your feet farther away makes your hamstrings work harder to keep your hips lifted. This gives you a bodyweight version of posterior-chain strength work that helps support walking, climbing stairs, lifting, and standing tall. Keep the steps small and controlled.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, lower back, hips, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Press through your heels and lift your hips.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Walk your feet forward one small step at a time.
  5. Walk your feet back toward your body while keeping your hips lifted.
  6. Lower your hips with control when the set is complete.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 6 to 8 walkouts. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Glute bridges, bridge holds, single-leg glute bridges, shorter bridge walkouts.

Form Tip: Keep your hips lifted and make each step small enough to control.

Wall Sit March

Wall sit marches train your quads, glutes, hip flexors, calves, and core. The wall sit builds steady leg strength, while the march adds a balance and bracing challenge. This move can feel similar to loaded lower-body training because your legs stay under constant tension while your core works to keep your hips steady. Start higher on the wall and lower your position as your legs get stronger.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, hip flexors, calves, core.

How to Do It:

  1. Stand with your back against a wall.
  2. Walk your feet forward slightly and slide into a comfortable wall sit.
  3. Brace your core and keep your chest lifted.
  4. Lift one foot a few inches off the floor.
  5. Lower it with control.
  6. Alternate sides while keeping your hips level.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 marches per side. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Standard wall sits, higher wall-sit marches, wall-sit heel lifts, single-leg wall-sit holds.

Form Tip: Press through your standing foot and keep your back supported against the wall.

5 Quick Morning Exercises That Burn Belly Pooch All Day Long After 55

Plank With Shoulder Taps

Planks with shoulder taps train your abs, obliques, shoulders, chest, glutes, and deep core. The plank gives your midsection a strong bracing job, and the shoulder tap adds movement so your core has to resist rocking side to side. This exercise builds the strength you use when carrying, reaching, pushing, and stabilizing your body during daily movement. Start with your feet wider for better control.

Muscles Trained: Abs, obliques, deep core, shoulders, chest, glutes.

How to Do It:

  1. Start in a high plank with your hands under your shoulders.
  2. Step your feet wider than hip-width apart.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Lift one hand and tap the opposite shoulder.
  5. Place your hand back down with control.
  6. Alternate sides while keeping your hips steady.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 8 to 12 taps per side. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Incline shoulder taps, knee plank shoulder taps, slower shoulder taps, standard high plank holds.

Form Tip: Keep your hips quiet and move your hand with control.

How to Build Strength Without Equipment After 60

No-equipment strength training works best when you treat each exercise like real resistance training. Bodyweight moves become more challenging when you slow the tempo, pause in hard positions, increase the range of motion, or train one side at a time. The goal is to create muscle tension, not simply move through reps quickly.

  • Use tempo: Lower slowly for 2 to 3 seconds on squats, lunges, push-ups, and bridges. Slower reps make your muscles work harder.
  • Add pauses: Hold the bottom of a chair squat, the top of a bridge, or the middle of a wall sit march for extra tension.
  • Train one side at a time: Reverse lunges and wall sit marches give each leg more individual work, which helps build strength and control.
  • Make the final reps count: Choose variations that make the last few reps challenging while keeping your form clean.
  • Repeat the routine consistently: Perform these moves 3 to 5 days per week, or use a few of them daily as short strength breaks.

Bodyweight training can build real strength after 60 when the exercises create enough tension, and the routine is easy to repeat. Use your own body as resistance, move with purpose, and progress the challenge as each move starts to feel stronger.

Police Detain Youths for ‘Hippy Crack’ Usage on Bournemouth Beach Amid Looming 40C Heatwave

0

As Britain grapples with a relentless 40C ‘heat dome’, crowds rushed to the beach in Bournemouth seeking relief. Among the sunseekers, young individuals were observed inhaling from balloons, a common practice involving nitrous oxide, colloquially known as ‘hippy crack’. These scenes unfolded amidst law enforcement activity where officers detained beachgoers.

The crowded beach, bustling with people eager to escape the scorching temperatures marking the UK’s ‘hottest day ever’, witnessed youths passing these inflatable balloons around. The presence of intoxicants like nitrous oxide raises concerns about safety and legality on public beaches.

Nearby, shisha pipes circulated among groups, with people puffing away next to families with children trying to enjoy a seaside day out. The juxtaposition of these activities with the serene toddler play on the bay highlights a unique contrast in beachside recreations.

In a separate incident, a man was escorted by police officers, drawing the attention of those enduring the sweltering temperatures. Details of the situation remain sparse as Dorset Police have been contacted for further comments.

Tragedy struck the beach the previous day when emergency services responded to a distress call. A woman in her 60s, believed to have been in the water with a child, suffered a medical emergency. Despite the valiant efforts of paramedics, she tragically passed away after being brought ashore.

The brutal ‘heat dome’ claimed a further two victims – a two-year-old and four-year-old were found unresponsive by their mother, 33, on Monday afternoon in the town of Carpentras, southern France, in a car parked outside their grandmother’s house.

It has been reported that the mother forgot about her children while she was unpacking shopping, with the children suffering cardiac arrests as temperatures reached a sweltering 40C.

The double tragedy occurred as temperatures soared across Western Europe, driven by a mass of hot air moving north from the Sahara, fuelled by a strong high‑pressure system known as the ‘African anticyclone’.

Meteorologists say the system is creating a so‑called ‘heat dome’, trapping hot air over western and central Europe, and allowing temperatures to build day after day.

Elsewhere in the UK, hundreds of Brits headed to Cornwall’s Newquay beach to enjoy the waves, while some lidos inland, like London Fields, are fully booked until the end of the week as people rush to take the edge off the blistering heat.

At least 312 schools were fully closed or closing early today, with parents being told their children can wear PE kits and sandals amid parts of England being placed on red alert over extreme temperatures.

Some schools have cancelled trips and are setting work for students to do at home, after the Met Office warned the heatwave is expected to bring ‘severe and significant impacts’, including widespread health risks for many.

Many have explicitly cited red weather warnings and extreme heat for the reasons behind closures, with some explaining classrooms lack air conditioning and that travel to and from school could be risky in the high temperatures.

As a result, children have been told they can wear PE kit rather than full school uniform, which typically involves long trousers and blazers. Some after-school clubs have also been cancelled.

Some children who cannot stay at home will continue to be cared for on site.

The Department for Education said it does not normally advise schools to close during hot weather because attendance is ‘the best way for pupils to learn and reach their potential’, but that school leaders should ensure they take ‘any steps necessary to make sure children are safe and comfortable’, as it laid out guidance on how to keep pupils safe.

The Daily Mail is also aware of one school offering ‘special extreme heat lunch choices’ tomorrow to protect the well-being of its kitchen staff, with the menu scaled back to just pasta and jacket potatoes.

Elsewhere, the Army has cancelled its ceremonial elements in London and Windsor to protect the wellbeing of its soldiers, horses and members of the public.

Ceremonial duties such as the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace will not go ahead on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

The King’s Life Guard, which are mounted troops at Horse Guards, will also change without ceremony at 8am on Wednesday to ‘avoid heat stress to horses’.

It is already the hottest day of the year in Scotland and Northern Ireland, with the mercury hitting 28.8C in Fyvie Castle in Aberdeenshire, and 26.4C in Katesbridge, County Down. In Wisley, Surrey, temperatures reached 33.7C on Tuesday afternoon.

It comes after a violent band of storms swept across southern England overnight, forcing at least one airport to close, rail services to be thrown into chaos, and around 3,000 lightning strikes to hit London in just two hours.

Two homes were set on fire in the capital, reportedly as a result of lightning strikes, with the London Fire Brigade receiving more than 400 calls since midnight.

Meanwhile, hundreds of homes in Glastonbury were left without electricity after thunderstorms swept across the West Country.

The Met Office has said there were around 29,074 lightning strikes recorded across southern Britain overnight, including a majority over Somerset of 18,540 and an estimated 3,000 over London.

There was also turmoil on the Tube this morning with Transport for London cancelling all Elizabeth line trains between Heathrow Terminal 4 and Terminals 2 and 3 due to the flooding overnight. Service has since resumed.

The entire Mildmay overground line ran a reduced service due to ‘hot weather mitigation’, and National Rail has urged people to ‘please only travel if absolutely necessary’.

June’s longstanding UK temperature record of 35.6C, set in Hampshire in 1976, is forecast to be challenged as temperatures climb towards 40C across parts of England and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Met Office said temperatures could beat the UK’s all-time high of 40.3C which was measured in July 2022, and are expected to beat the June record.

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a red Heat Health Alert covering London, the South East, South West, East of England, East Midlands and West Midlands from 1am on Wednesday until 11pm on Thursday.

The alert warns there is a ‘risk to life for even the healthy population’ and highlights the potential impact on transport, power supplies, water resources and businesses.

In London, all Jobcentre offices will be closed for the next two days due to the red weather warning for heat.

Payments will be made to customers as normal, without the need for them to attend any appointments.

Jeremy Clarkson’s pub The Farmer’s Dog has been forced to close its butcher’s counter because of the ‘extreme heat’.

‘It turns out that when Britain reaches temperatures normally associated with southern Spain, certain things stop working properly,’ a message on the pub’s social media account read.

‘As a result, Chops (our butcher’s counter) will be closed today and potentially for the remainder of the week. The combination of extreme heat, refrigeration units and a giant tent has proved challenging.’

It also recommended that dogs were not brought to the pub today as there is ‘very little shade on site’.

Monmouthshire County Council told pedestrians they would not be able to walk across the Old Wye bridge in Chepstow from 11am today.

The local authority had recently reopened the Grade I-listed bridge linking Wales and England, but it has been closed again due to the high temperatures.

Bristol Airport was forced to temporarily suspend operations after a fault developed with its air traffic control systems, with passengers advised to contact their airlines for updates on delayed and cancelled flights.

Several flights have also been cancelled or delayed at Manchester Airport, with Turkish Airlines and Etihad Airways being the worst affected.

A number of Eurostar trains to and from London have also been cancelled this week because of ‘adverse weather conditions’.

Harry Styles fans will also be offered half-priced water at Wembley Stadium from today.

The stadium’s water bottle policy has also been relaxed due to the heatwave to allow concertgoers to bring metal or hard plastic water bottles inside.

Roberts-Smith Absent from War Memorial Ceremony Due to Health Concerns, Reports Lawyer

In brief

It has been confirmed that Ben Roberts-Smith will not be traveling to Canberra for the much-anticipated gallery opening at the Australian War Memorial. Despite his status as a Victoria Cross recipient, which had previously prompted him to assert his intention to be present, recent developments have changed the situation.

In a surprising turn of events, the controversial figure and alleged war criminal Ben Roberts-Smith has opted out of attending the inaugural event for the new gallery at the War Memorial.

Roberts-Smith had his bail conditions adjusted to accommodate his participation in Tuesday evening’s event. However, the Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney was informed that the former member of the special forces decided against making the trip to the ACT after all.

Slade Howell, the defense lawyer for Roberts-Smith, explained, “Mr. Roberts-Smith felt unwell in the past couple of days and opted not to travel to Canberra today for the official opening at the war memorial.”

The decorated soldier, currently facing serious allegations including five counts of war crime murder, was initially set to attend the grand opening of Anzac Hall. This part of the memorial commemorates Australia’s military engagements in the Middle East and Afghanistan, as well as various peacekeeping missions.

Defence Minister Richard Marles earlier said it was appropriate for the Afghanistan veteran to be there.

“The Victoria Cross recipients have been invited to this, which is appropriate. I’m comfortable about that,” he told ABC TV on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and One Nation Leader Pauline Hanson will be among those at the opening.

Hanson had said she was hoping to speak with Roberts-Smith during the event and that he was welcome to attend given he wasn’t yet convicted of a crime.

“He’s still innocent til he’s been proven guilty,” she told reporters in Canberra.

“I’m hoping to actually catch up with him, say hello to him, give him my support.”

The decorated soldier is accused of murdering or ordering the murders of five unarmed detainees while deployed in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012.

After the successful bail hearing earlier in June, Roberts-Smith told reporters outside it was “absolutely” appropriate he attend the opening as a Victoria Cross recipient.

He has strongly rejected the war crime allegations and has vowed to fight them in court.

Albanese will tell those gathered they are bonded by the power of “lest we forget”.

“That most unadorned of sentences that dwells within us like a heartbeat — we vow to keep the flame of memory burning so brightly that its glow reaches future generations,” he will say in a speech.

“Today we adjourned the parliament so that everyone who wished to could come mark the opening of this atrium and Anzac Hall, an addition to the Australian War Memorial that makes that flame burns so much brighter.”

The prime minister will implore those gathered at the event to “read all the words” about those who have gone before them.

“Look at the faces and get lost amid the smiles, the hope and camaraderie – the counterpoint to war’s relentless, inhuman arithmetic. They are its true cost,” he will say.

Anzac Hall and the memorial’s revamp will add more than 5000 square metres of gallery space — almost a full football pitch’s worth — when completed in 2028, totalling 15,000 square metres.

More than $550 million has been spent on the redevelopment.

The memorial has consistently defended displaying an image of Roberts-Smith, from which the body of a dead man has been cropped out.

A plaque under the image has been adjusted several times to reflect Roberts-Smith’s arrest and previous civil court cases.

Sarasota County Targeted by Copper Wire Thieves: Thousands of Feet Stolen from Streets

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — Sarasota County has been grappling with an alarming issue: thousands of feet of copper wire have vanished from its street lighting systems. This theft has plunged various roads into darkness and resulted in a hefty bill for taxpayers amounting to tens of thousands of dollars.

In recent months, multiple incidents of copper wire theft have plagued Sarasota County, significantly affecting the functionality of roadway lighting systems across the region, according to county officials.

Doug Johnson, serving as the Acting Community Affairs Manager for the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, explained the situation, saying, “Individuals are actively targeting streetlamps and accessing wire pole boxes, cutting the wires and extracting large amounts of wire from these boxes.”

According to Johnson, it is suspected that these thieves are selling the stolen copper wire to scrap yards in exchange for cash.

On 17th Street alone, crews say roughly 9,000 feet of wire was stolen, leading to repair costs of about $45,000.

Another theft on Bahia Vista Street involved 7,000 feet of wire and cost around $9,000 to repair.

This is knocking out streetlights and creating potential hazards for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

“Removing the roadway lighting makes the roads dangerous for everybody, for all motorists,” said Stephen Smagacz, The Supervisor of Streetlights and Signalization for Sarasota County.

Officials say the damage extends far beyond the wire that’s stolen because many roadway lights are connected in a series, and cutting a single section of wire can cause dozens of lights to go dark.

“Once they cut out one light, basically all the lights follow and everything behind that will be out of service,” said Smagacz. “I would imagine that they knocked out probably 40 lights each time they did that, which is a large section of the road.”

The county started replacing copper wire with aluminum alternatives that have little to no resale value, to help reduce future thefts.

However, officials say thieves are still damaging infrastructure, while trying to access the wire.

“If you see people pulling wire out of the ground at two or three o’clock in the morning, know this is not sanctioned by Sarasota County,” Smagacz added.

Officials are asking the public to report any suspicious activity, especially during overnight hours, to law enforcement.

Michael Gledhill Declared Mentally Unfit for Trial in the Death of “Top Gun” Actor James Handy

0

Michael Gledhill, charged with the fatal stabbing of actor James Handy, has been declared mentally unfit to face trial.

During a competency hearing on June 22, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi determined that the 44-year-old could not grasp the proceedings against him nor contribute to his own defense, as reported by The Associated Press.

Confirmation from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to Oxygen further verified that Gledhill was found unfit to stand trial at this hearing.

Facing a murder charge, Gledhill is alleged to have wielded a deadly weapon in the attack on James, who was found with a chest stab wound outside a house in Tarzana on June 3, as outlined in a statement from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

According to People, Michael, who is the son of James’ girlfriend Wendy Gledhill, was absent from the hearing because his lawyers relayed that he refused transport.

A court specializing in mental health evaluation concluded after reviewing Michael’s psychiatric evaluations that he was not competent. Cavalluzzi relied on that determination while making her ruling, while also deciding that Michael was not able to make proper medication decisions, per the AP.

As a result, she signed an order that would allow Michael to be involuntarily medicated for up to one year in an effort to restore his competency.

If his competency is later restored, the criminal case against him could proceed.

What Happened to Top Gun: Maverick Actor James Handy?

Michael’s mother Wendy told The Daily Mail that James—her boyfriend of 31 years—got up the morning of June 3 and went outside to get the paper, but never returned.

“I can only assume,” she told the outlet, “my son was already out there and they started to argue, from my understanding, on the front yard.”

Though Wendy was still in bed and unaware of the trouble outside, Los Angeles Police said they arrived at the scene around 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call in which the caller stated, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

Police said James—known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick, Arachnophobia and Jumanji—was found laying in the front yard of the home “unconscious and suffering from a stab wound to his chest.” He later died at a local hospital.

“This is not how anyone’s life should end, stabbed in the chest and left dying in the front yard of a home,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman remarked in the statement from prosecutors. “The victim, James Handy, deserved to live out his later years enjoying what he had worked so hard for and enjoying it with those he loved and cared about. Like all murder victims, his life mattered and the person who inexplicably and violently took it must be held accountable for his actions.”

Michael was taken into custody after he flagged down responding officers and told them he was the person they were looking for, police said.

According to prosecutors, he had been living at the home with his mother at the time of the incident.

Wendy told TMZ that her son had allegedly been diagnosed with schizophrenia about a year before James’ death and she thought he had stopped taking his medication about a week before the killing.

“I’m so sorry this happened,” she said. “I’m still in shock. I still can’t comprehend it.”

Michael—who has yet to enter a plea to the charges against him—is expected to appear in court on July 14 to determine his long-term placement, the AP reported.

JD Vance Sparks Controversy with Controversial Remarks on Israel: Community Reacts

0

The Controversy: Vice President JD Vance defends the decision to keep Israel out of the Iran negotiations.

Michael Goodwin offers a straightforward perspective; he argues that Vice President JD Vance’s critical remarks about Israel prompt reflection on whether the nation would face the same backlash if it weren’t identified as a Jewish state (“Attacks on Israel make zero sense,” June 21).

Notably, America’s explicit adversaries rarely receive equal condemnation.

Vance’s criticisms underscore Israel’s isolation on the international stage.

S.P. Hersh

Lawrence

Vance tore into Israeli critics of the new so-called Iran deal, claiming America is Israel’s only ally.

He has it backward: In the neighborhood where Israel is located, Israel is the only real ally of the United States.

A deal that doesn’t remove the threat of Iran on the world stage is not a deal — it’s a terrorist explosion waiting to happen.

Chaim Weinstein

Brooklyn

Is Goodwin fighting for American or Israeli causes here?

Trump was always going to do what he felt was right for the United States, not Israel.

It’s MAGA — not MIGA.

Israel gets away with a lot because of America’s backing.

For far too long, Israelis have used what the Nazis did to them as an excuse to lash out at anyone who does them harm.

But now that they have leveled Gaza, it’s time for the Middle East to get peaceful.

Other countries have dealt with atrocities and not one has been able to get away with what Israel has done for close to 100 years now.

James Schwartz

With America’s birthday approaching next month, Trump should be waving the red, white and blue in celebration — not the white flag of surrender to Iran.

Meanwhile, Vance warns Israel, mafia-style, not to dare criticize the administration that has shamelessly betrayed it.

At a time when many Democrats are antisemites, the White House appears determined to surpass their fecklessness by bowing before Tehran, humiliating America before the world.

Stephen Silver

San Francisco, Calif.

Everyone blames Israel for breaking up the peace process between the United States and Iran.

This is so wrong. Israelis have the right to defend their country.

Iran has conned every one in the world.

Its regime has to go.

With its current leaders, Iran will never keep a peace deal.

They will keep building their arsenal bigger and bigger. Trump has to get rid of the regime.

The Issue: Mayor Mamdani calling the American Israel Public Affairs Committee “monsters.”

Mayor Mamdani accused the American Israel Public Affairs Committee of being monsters who “turn us against one another (“Rabbi: Zo full of hatred,” June 22).”

The real monster who turns people against Jews and Israelis — at a time when antisemitic violence has skyrocketed in New York City — has a beard and a nice smile.

Samantha Bella

Manhattan

I am sick of Mamdani accusing Israel of committing genocide.

Genocide is the total destruction of a human group.

If Israel wanted to do that, it wouldn’t have covered Gaza with leaflets for civilians to get out.

How can we allow the mayor of a city with a large Jewish population to spread these lies?

Miriam Fiber

Teraneck, NJ

The mayor never misses an opportunity to show his true antisemitic feelings.

Calling AIPAC monsters is beyond the pale.

Kudos to Rabbi Chaim Steinmetz for calling him out on his hateful rhetoric.

The Jews in New York are in a very precarious position.

The only monsters here are Mamdani and his followers.

FBI Updates ‘Most Wanted Fraudsters’ List with Two New Additions Following Record $6.5 Billion Healthcare Fraud Bust

0

On Tuesday, FBI Director Kash Patel declared that two international fugitives have been added to the agency’s recently established “Most Wanted Fraudsters” list. This update coincides with a historic federal crackdown on healthcare fraud resulting in charges against 455 individuals accused of over $6.5 billion in fraudulent claims.

During a joint news conference about the “2026 National Health Care Fraud Takedown” campaign, Patel named Khalid Ahmed Satary and Emylee Thai as the latest fugitives to make the list.

Both Satary and Thai have been evading authorities since 2022 and were added to the list following the capture of two fraudsters previously included.

Satary is wanted for his alleged involvement in a staggering $547 million healthcare fraud conspiracy tied to a genetic testing scheme.

The FBI said Satary is believed to be hiding in the United Arab Emirates.

Thai faces charges for conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, defrauding the U.S., and paying and receiving kickbacks.

Thai’s laboratory allegedly billed Medicare roughly $142 million for genetic testing, successfully pocketing about $95 million on those claims, according to the FBI.

Officials said Thai had previously been wearing an ankle monitor but fled, and may be hiding in Vietnam.

“The American people and the world are our best sources of information,” Patel said, urging anyone with tips regarding Satary or Thai to visit tips.fbi.gov or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The additions to the most wanted list come amid what acting Attorney General Todd Blanche described Tuesday as “the greatest combined federal and state effort in combating healthcare fraud in history.”

The whole-of-government operation, executed over the last 14 days, spanned 45 states and territories.

Blanche detailed how suspects allegedly used stolen taxpayer money to bankroll lavish lifestyles, including multimillion-dollar homes, a $135,000 Maserati, a $865,000 Bulgari necklace, and the construction of a $4.6 million hotel at a beach resort in the Philippines.

VANCE-LED TASK FORCE CUTS OFF $1.4B FROM HOME HEALTH, HOSPICE PROVIDERS SUSPECTED OF FRAUD

“Fraudsters can no longer rip off American taxpayers,” Blanche said. “If you seek to harm or cheat Americans, we will find you, seize any assets and prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”

The broader takedown represents a major offensive by the Trump administration to aggressively root out corruption in Medicare and Medicaid.

Key figures, including Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, emphasized the coordinated interagency effort is ending old “pay and chase” policies.

Instead of allowing criminals to steal funds and attempting to claw them back later, the administration is now using advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence to detect and block fraudulent claims before the money ever leaves the Treasury.
