New Data Reveals Required Superannuation for a Comfortable Retirement

0

in brief

  • The cost of living crisis has driven up the amount of money Australians need to retire comfortably.
  • New data shows that Australians still overestimate the amount they will need to have saved by retirement age.

The cost of enjoying a comfortable retirement in Australia is on the rise, reflecting increasing economic pressures. New data highlights how inflation is impacting the retirement plans of both individuals and couples.

The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA), a leading industry organization, reports that the ideal superannuation savings needed upon retirement have escalated due to mounting living expenses and housing instability.

For those retiring today and seeking a comfortable lifestyle, the budget requirements have increased by 1.5% for couples and 2% for singles in the quarter ending March this year. This rise parallels a 1.5% increase in the consumer price index over the same timeframe.

Currently, to achieve a comfortable retirement, singles need an annual income of $55,932, while couples require $78,566.

Aiming for retirement at the age of 67, when Australians become eligible for the Age Pension, individuals should have a superannuation balance of $630,000. For couples, the target balance is $730,000, assuming they own their home and maintain a comfortable level of expenditure.

That is an increase of $3,530 for a single person and $4,691 for a couple compared to figures from 12 months ago.

Inflation, which has grown substantially since the end of February when the war in Iran began to spike oil prices, tends to hit retirees harder because they typically spend more on essentials.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the biggest cost drivers over the year to the March quarter were electricity — up 25.4 per cent —, automotive fuel — up 24.2 per cent —, beef — up 11.8 per cent —, and coffee and tea — up 10.7 per cent.

Australians overestimate how much they will need at retirement

Despite the rising impact of inflation, four in ten Australians still overestimate how much they will need for a comfortable retirement, ASFA figures show.

ASFA CEO Mary Delahunty has said that when inflationary pressures bite, people naturally assume that retirement too will cost a fortune.

“I think people are feeling the cost-of-living pressures today and they’re projecting that forward to what their retirement might look like,” Delahunty told the SBS On the Money podcast.

“The reality is that retirement generally costs less than working life,” she added in a statement.

Delahunty attributed this to many owning their home outright by this point, work-related costs disappearing, and concessions helping to reduce the price of bills and medicines.

Super pension income is generally tax-free after 60 for most Australians, Delahunty said. However, minimum withdrawal rules apply once super is moved into a retirement pension account.

Among 25 to 34-year-olds, 51 per cent believe they will need more than $1 million in today’s dollars to retire comfortably, and 23 per cent believe they will need more than $2 million. The figures are similar for 35 to 49-year-olds, at 52 per cent and 22 per cent respectively.

Expectations of retirement budgets tend to soften with age. Among 50 to 64-year-olds, 40 per cent believe more than $1 million is required, falling to 29 per cent for those aged 65 and over. The share expecting to need more than $2 million drops to 11 per cent and 8 per cent, respectively, across these cohorts.

Housing crisis changes the equation

These inflated expectations are driven by cost of living pressure and housing insecurity, with 51 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds surveyed expecting to need more money as many anticipate renting or paying a mortgage into retirement.

“For a long time, the assumption was that you would own your home by the time you retired. For many younger Australians, that feels like a much less attainable reality,” Delahunty said.

The proportion of homeowners has fallen successively, generation on generation, with millennials owning their homes at a lower proportion than baby boomers at the same age.

ABS data from the end of last year shows that renting is rising across every age group and that the renting population is getting older.

House prices in 1984 were 3.3 times the average annual income, whereas they had grown to 10 times the average salary in 2025, the financial comparison group Finder revealed.

How are you tracking?

The $630,000 needed to reach a comfortable standard of retirement means Australians should aim for a balance of $574,000 by the time they turn 65.

This assumes that they have a pre-tax income of $100,000 a year, which keeps pace with inflation, and that they will maintain that income without any career breaks due to parenthood, illness, or similar.

ABS data released in February shows that the average full-time salary in Australia is approximately $106,657 before tax, while the median is around $88,400.

Between 2012 and 2020, wage growth slowed to historic lows, barely outpacing inflation. In the high-inflation post-COVID years, wages were broadly outstripped by inflation. That trend had stopped by 2023, but has returned this year.

Under ASFA’s assumptions, the recommended super balance is $98,000 at 40, and $248,000 at 50. At 55, Australians should have $342,00, and by 60 they should have $449,500.

The Australian government’s Moneysmart website also features a retirement planner that can help people estimate how much money they may need in retirement and how long their savings could last.

What does a comfortable retirement look like?

The ASFA defines a “comfortable” retirement as having access to top-level private health insurance, the latest technology, a reasonable vehicle, and the ability to take a domestic holiday each year.

Comfortable retirees will also be able to update their wardrobes when needed, eat out at restaurants occasionally, use cooling and heating in their homes with confidence, undertake home repairs, and regularly enjoy leisure activities like visiting the cinema or going to exhibitions.

For those who do not manage to reach the latest $630,000 figure by age 67 for a single person, or $730,000 for a couple, a more modest retirement awaits.

While still better off than what the Age Pension alone provides, a modest retirement only really allows for the basics. That includes basic health insurance, more budget technology, a cheaper vehicle, and an annual domestic trip.

It also mandates a limited budget to replace clothing, a few cheaper meals out, keeping a close watch on utility costs, a limited home repairs budget, and an occasional trip to the cinema.

$110,000 in savings is required for a single person at this level, while $120,000 is required for a couple. The sizeable discrepancy is due to the fact that the base rate of the Age Pension plus various pension supplements is sufficient to meet much of the expenditure required.

However, both a moderate and comfortable retirement assume home-ownership. For renters to achieve even a moderate retirement, they will require $340,000 as a single person, or $385,000 in a couple.

Find Out How Midwest and Southern States Excel in Latest Housing Rankings – Check Your State’s Performance

0

A recent report highlights that the Midwest and South lead the nation in homebuyer affordability and new home construction. These regions are setting the pace, according to a comprehensive analysis by Realtor.com.

The 2026 edition of Realtor.com’s housing report cards assessed all 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, revealing that the Midwest and South outshine the Northeast and West in these key areas.

Although no state achieved a perfect A+ rating, 12 out of the 13 top-performing states were in the Midwest and South, earning grades from B- to A. The report bases half of its evaluation on housing affordability, with the other half focused on the level of homebuilding activity.

“This year’s update underscores persistent regional differences but also uncovers significant changes, including a new leader and several states that experienced notable shifts in their scores,” remarked Joel Berner, a senior economist at Realtor.com.

Indiana emerged as the frontrunner, scoring 76.3 out of 100. The state secured an A grade due to its robust affordability and active homebuilding sector, climbing three positions from the previous year’s rankings.

The median-priced home in the Hoosier State was $295,810 and required about 28% of the median household income of $71,469, which fell below the 30% benchmark for affordability.

Other states to receive A grades include Iowa, which has a median listing price of $282,886 and a median household income of $75,991, as well as last year’s leader South Carolina, with a median listing price of $363,896 and a median income of $67,758.

Texas ranked fourth with an A- grade, given the Lone Star State’s median listing price of $364,749 and median income of $76,585. North Carolina and Nebraska were the only two states to receive B+ grades.

The biggest risers in the report compared with last year were Delaware and Utah, which each jumped 12 spots. Delaware rose from 19th to 7th, while Utah saw its ranking rise from 29th to 17th.

Six states received F grades on their report cards, with New York ranking last due to a $668,173 median listing price and median income of $82,657. The other five states that received F grades were all located in the Northeast or West, with Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Hawaii, California and Connecticut rounding out the bottom of the list in order of the worst grade to the best.

Most of the states near the bottom of the rankings saw their rankings hold steady or change little from a year ago, as they continue to face high prices, limited land for building with restrictive zoning policies, and building costs outpacing what middle-income buyers can afford.

The biggest drops were three states which all fell eight spots in the rankings – Alabama fell from 13th to 21st, Maryland dropped from 23rd to 31st, and New Jersey slipped from 35th to 43rd.

Here’s the list of the Realtor.com report’s grades for each of the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia:

Tragic Oversight: How System Failures Left Baby Preston Vulnerable to Harm

0

2022

June 16

At 7:03 p.m., Sarah Davey welcomed her son, Preston Davey, into the world at Wythenshawe Hospital in south Manchester. Born four weeks ahead of schedule, Preston weighed 5 pounds and 7 ounces.

June 21

Just days after his birth, Preston was placed into emergency foster care under an interim care order issued by Oldham Council. Foster parents Sandra and Paul Cooper took him in, providing care for the first nine months of his life.

2023

January 6

Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley are approved by Adoption Now, a company providing services to local councils. The company says Preston needs: ‘Love, affection, safety and stability.’

February 13

They meet Preston for the first time during a ‘bumped into’ meeting with Mr and Mrs Cooper and social workers at a pub in Aston-under-Lyne, Manchester.

March 23

Introductory meetings begin proper, first at Mr and Mrs Cooper’s home, then later at Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley’s house, in Staining Road, Blackpool.

March 31

Preston spends his first night at the men’s home and is formally placed under their care.

April 6

Varley texts his sister, a baby sleep trainer, saying: ‘He’s dead meat today. Didn’t sleep last night after 11.30pm. Up every one and a half hours.’

April 23-25

Varley takes several videos of himself naked in the bath with Preston, some for over an hour, and other pictures of Preston with his genitals exposed. The prosecution said these showed he had a sexual interest in the baby.

May 11

McGowan-Fazakerley abandons a 999 call then calls 111 to report Preston has ‘breathing problems.’ A call back from a doctor goes unanswered.

May 12

Preston is visited at home by a health visitor and appears well.

May 25

At 11.10am Preston is rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, floppy and unresponsive. Varley reports he has had a nosebleed and the infant has a suspected seizure in A&E.

Nursing staff notice two bruises on his head. A medical report states he has `unexplained injuries, inconsistent with a version of events given.’

Hospital safeguarding are informed and social services and Lancashire Police called.

Following discussions with medical staff the bruises are put down to a baby learning to crawl and are not regarded as suspicious. He is discharged two days later.

June 12

Varley takes a photo of Preston naked and sends it to McGowan-Fazakerley with a crude comment about his private parts.

Another picture shows bruising on the child’s bottom – consistent with a human bite mark.

June 15

The night before Preston’s first birthday.

Varley is angry and frustrated because McGowan-Fazakerley is delayed home from a work trip.

At 9.07pm Varley takes a video showing Preston tired and falling asleep while music from the film Moana plays loudly in the background.

As he nods off Varley wakes him by shouting ‘Boo’.

He later takes another video of Preston having an apparent seizure, which the prosecution say is the aftermath of a sexual assault.

June 30

At 8.25pm, Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley take Preston to Blackpool Victoria Hospital A&E Department, saying he has a rash, diarrhoea, vomiting and high temperature.

Nurses notice bruising to Preston’s head, but staff are shown a home video of the child pulling a toy box onto himself, by way of explanation.

Varley comments: ‘You lot are going to think we have been abusing him or something.’

It is later discovered the toy box video was filmed 12 days earlier. Preston is discharged the following day.

July 4

Social worker Amy Shepherdson visits and finds Preston is not himself and looks ‘pale’.

She notes: ‘He tried to smile several times but then this changed to a very sad face and a little cry.’

July 6

At 10.36am Varley takes Preston to hospital for third time with an injury to his left arm, which he says Preston sustained as he lay him in his cot the previous evening.

After X-ray, a cast is applied for a fractured elbow.

The child’s social worker, Amy Shepherdson, who had been in contact with the hospital, texts Varley to say: `Just to reassure you they said they had absolutely no concerns. U absolutely did the right thing.’

July 7

Preston is visited at home by Helen Magee, an independent reviewer from Oldham social services.

In her report of the visit, apparently addressed to the baby, she writes:

‘I did watch your [Preston’s] responses to your daddies quite carefully as I’m aware that you had a few hospital admissions of late and this made me ponder a little bit as to whether there was a problem I could see.

‘I decided there wasn’t.’

The same week Varley tells a work colleague he is struggling mentally and having ‘dark thoughts’ about drowning or suffocating Preston.

July 13

Rebecca Warhurst, headteacher of South Shore Academy, in Blackpool, where Varley worked, pays him a welfare visit because of concerns over his mental state.

He reassures her he is ok and she leaves with no concerns.

July 23

Four days before Preston’s death, Varley takes seven photos of Preston, stretching over a period of three minutes, 12 seconds.

The child, asleep or unconscious, has his head and arms over the top horizontal bar of his cot and his neck resting on it, his body partially suspended and his legs in a `frog like’ position.

His tongue is protruding and his lips appear blue.

Later, Varley also takes a picture of Preston’s ‘abnormal’ bottom.

July 27

At 4.45pm, Varley records a 35-second video on his phone of Preston in ‘extreme respiratory distress’, gasping and in need of immediate resuscitation.

At 6.30pm Preston is rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in a critical condition and Varley reports he found him submerged in the bath.

A team of paramedics, nurses and doctors attempt to resuscitate for 50 minutes, but Preston is pronounced dead at 7.18pm.

July 31

A Home Office post-mortem examination concludes Preston’s cause of death is due to acute upper airway obstruction and rules out drowning.

It also finds around 40 external and internal injuries including bruises to Preston’s forehead, throat, mouth, bladder, bottom and bleeding in his lungs.

Some of the injuries are regarded as clinical signs of sexual abuse.

2025

June 11/12

Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley are arrested and charged in connection with Preston’s death.

2026

April 20

Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley go on trial denying all offences.

Tragic Utah Canyon BASE Jump Claims Lives of Daredevil Athlete and Companion, Leaving Adventure Community in Mourning

0

An unfortunate BASE jumping incident over the weekend claimed the lives of two individuals in a Utah canyon, including a renowned daredevil who famously shared the stage with Madonna during the 2012 Super Bowl, officials have reported.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office in Utah identified one of the deceased as Andy Lewis, a prominent figure in the world of extreme sports. Lewis was celebrated for his daring exploits in BASE jumping, a high-risk activity where participants leap from towering structures or natural formations, deploying a parachute to reach the ground safely.

According to a social media update by Aerial Arts Moab, an acrobatics company that described Lewis as a “co-owner and best friend,” the tragic accident occurred during a tandem jump, where two individuals are secured together in a single harness.

Lewis also founded BASE Jump Moab, a company offering tandem jumps to those new to the sport, allowing them to experience the thrill while harnessed to an experienced guide equipped with a parachute. The company’s promotional videos showcase duos stepping off massive cliffs, experiencing a brief freefall before their parachutes deploy.

Within the BASE jumping community, Lewis was both admired and respected for his audacious approach, often challenging conventions by attempting jumps through narrow gaps or delaying parachute deployment beyond what others would consider safe. John McEvoy, a fellow BASE jumping instructor from Twin Falls, Idaho, who had jumped with Lewis, noted his reputation for such bold endeavors.

“He had an incredible level of athleticism and skill that was developed over years of practice,” McEvoy said. “But then he would take an incredible amount of risk.”

Grand County Sheriff Jamison Wiggins confirmed the other person who was killed was Danny Joe Kregle, a 68-year-old father and grandfather who was described by a family member as an accomplished businessman.

“Danny had a wonderful sense of humor and was always looking for ways to make people laugh,” relative Sydney Laverty told The Times-Independent. “One of his greatest joys was performing magic tricks alongside his granddaughter.”

Lewis’ other sport made him an overnight celebrity, thanks to Madonna

Lewis was also a prominent figure in the niche sports of slacklining and tricklining, which combine elements of high-wire walking with aerial acrobatics — sometimes at perilous heights.

He went from obscure athlete to overnight celebrity when he appeared onstage in Madonna’s 2012 Super Bowl halftime show. Dressed in a Roman toga, Lewis bounced and executed tricks on his inch-wide line like it was a trampoline while Madonna sang behind him.

“My phone actually rang itself to death three days in a row,” Lewis said soon afterward in an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s late night show.

Emergency responders were dispatched Sunday to a report of people injured in a BASE jumping attempt at Mineral Bottom, a remote desert area near the Utah-Colorado line, according to the sheriff’s office.

BASE jumping is far more dangerous than skydiving

Though there’s no official tally of BASE jumping deaths, a list compiled by the website BASEaddict.com shows 540 total fatalities worldwide since 1981 — including 30 people killed last year. Prominent deaths include BASE jumper Dean Potter and his climbing partner, Graham Hunt, who were killed in 2015 while attempting a wingsuit flight in California’s Yosemite National Park.

A study focused on BASE jumping in Norway, published in a medical journal in 2007, estimated that BASE jumping carried risks of injury or death five to eight times greater than skydiving.

Lewis openly acknowledged the sport’s inherent danger.

“It’s weird to think about how many people are dead, because it’s like a normal thing,” Lewis told documentary filmmaker Ella Warnick in an interview published last year.

Tandem BASE jumping carries additional risk because it straps together two people, one of whom generally lacks experience, under a single parachute, McEvoy said. But because they involve novices, they also tend to be the most low-risk, basic types of jumps.

“Within BASE, it’s a very controversial topic,” McEvoy said. “There’s a lot of people who say it’s the stupidest thing in the world and others arguing: `No, we’re giving people the experience of their lives.’”

No one immediately returned phone, text and Facebook messages left Monday for BASE Jump Moab.

Lewis won four straight world championships in competitive slacklining from 2008 through 2011. Lewis set a Guinness World Record for slackline surfing, swaying his feet side to side in a rocking motion that mimics surfing, while keeping his balance above China’s Diaoshuilou waterfall in 2011.

In 2014, he walked a slackline suspended between two hot air balloons more than 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) above the Nevada desert.

Three Children Injured in Shooting Near Public Pool in Small Arkansas Town; Suspect Apprehended

In a tragic turn of events over the weekend, a shooting near a popular recreational spot in Stuttgart, Arkansas, has left several children injured. The unsettling incident unfolded close to the John Cain Aquatic Center, a place typically filled with laughter and community spirit.

According to the Stuttgart Police Department, officers swiftly responded to the scene on Saturday, just before 5 p.m. local time, following reports of gunfire. The chaos resulted in three children sustaining gunshot wounds, all of whom were immediately transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Among the injured, one child suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. Details on the conditions of the other two young victims have not been disclosed, leaving the community anxiously awaiting updates on their recovery.

Thanks to the prompt response of law enforcement, aided by the Arkansas County Sheriff’s Office, a suspect was apprehended just minutes after the shooting occurred. Authorities have opted not to release any names at this stage, citing the involvement of juveniles in this distressing case.

“At this time, no names will be released, as all parties involved are juveniles,” the department noted.

In a statement on Facebook, the John Cain Aquatic Center said the aquatic center will be closed “until further notice.”

It is unclear what led to the shooting.

Police said the investigation remains active, and officers are continuing to gather information regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Stuttgart police said the shooting left the department “deeply saddened.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and every person affected by this tragic incident,” the police statement said. “We remain committed to thoroughly investigating this case and ensuring accountability for those responsible.”

The Stuttgart Police Department, Arkansas County Sheriff’s Office, Arkansas State Police and Stuttgart Parks Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment.

Stuttgart is a small town in eastern Arkansas, about an hour southeast of Little Rock.

Billy Bush Criticizes ‘Toxic’ Environment with Al Roker Amid Alleged Job Threats

0

Billy Bush has recently criticized his former Today show colleague, Al Roker, describing him as ‘toxic,’ ‘mean,’ and ‘unprepared.’ Bush shared his negative experiences with Roker during his short tenure at the NBC morning show in 2016.

The media personality, 54, appeared on Friday’s edition of The Nerve With Maureen Callahan where he called Roker, 71, ‘territorial, vindictive and chronically unprepared’ at work.

According to Bush, Roker displayed passive-aggressive behavior towards him from their initial collaboration on Access Hollywood.

This tension reportedly persisted when Bush joined the Today show in May 2016. Roker had even posted on social media, welcoming Bush with a tweet that read, ‘A big welcome to @billybush joining our crazy family. Tradition: New guy buys dinner.’

Bush commented, ‘He does this all the time. There’s something about me in particular that was [he] likes me but fears me, didn’t want me anywhere near.’

The Daily Mail has contacted Roker’s representatives for additional comments on the situation.

Roker, 71, was described by his one-time colleague as ‘territorial, vindictive and chronically unprepared.’

Bush said that prior to his sudden October 2016 dismissal on the show – after he was heard on the infamous 2005 tape in which President Donald Trump boasted how his fame enabled him to grab women’s genitals – plans were in the works to jettison Roker by the spring of 2017.

Bush recalled how he and Roker worked together on the third hour of the Today show, which he predicted ‘would never be a successful hour, because [Roker is] maybe the worst interviewer on television.’

He said NBC exec Noah Oppenheim told him that he needed to survive until March of 2017, at which time NBC officials planned to ‘unload’ the ‘toxic’ Roker and ‘get him out of this deal.’

The plans never came to fruition, Bush said, as ‘the Trump thing’ cut short his tenure on the network program.

Bush said Roker irritated him by liking social media posts that were negative about him – in one case, when a social media user described Bush as ‘a whitesplaining racist.’

‘I’m the new guy and this dude’s liking tweets from people that are calling me things that are career-ending and awful and not f***ing true!’ Bush said.

Matt Lauer – who would lose his lead anchor job on the show in 2017 amid sexual misconduct allegations – was not a welcoming presence to Bush on the program either.

Bush said that while his NBC bosses were behind him, it was clear that Lauer and Roker ‘definitely did not want me there.’

Bush, appearing on Friday’s edition of The Nerve With Maureen Callahan, said dealing with Roker generally made for an unpleasant experience

He recalled of the tension, ‘You could feel it … I could feel it in the room with them.’

Bush chalked up to NBC’s tolerance of Roker and his antics to the TV star’s longevity, with more than three decades on the program.

‘People don’t know how mean he is – he’s mean, he’s mean, he’s a mean person.

‘When you say rageful and all that, yeah – there is rage in there. There’s jealousy, and I talk about vindictiveness, but he’s mean. He doesn’t share the air.’

Bush noted how legendary late Tonight Show host Johnny Carson believed that a strong appearance from others on his program reflected well on him and the show itself.

‘Like, we all do well, everybody wins – not Al,’ Bush said. ‘He sees somebody doing well on the Today Show, and immediately it’s, “Take them down.”‘

Asked by Callahan why Roker was so angry when considering his successful career, Bush said that the weatherman’s fury, rage and anger often got the best of him.

‘When I got there, a younger guy with a full head of hair, who the women on the staff genuinely liked a lot – and that was infuriating to him,’ Bush said.

‘And when I got sacked and sent out of there, all the women were destroyed, and the men, which is Al and Matt … they were, “Get him out of here.”‘

Troy Deeney Criticizes Marc Cucurella Following Chelsea’s £52M Transfer to Real Madrid

0

Troy Deeney has pointed out that Marc Cucurella contributed to Chelsea’s challenges after the full-back expressed his discontent with the club prior to joining Real Madrid.

Cucurella finalized a £52 million transfer to the Spanish club this week, with Real Madrid moving swiftly to outpace competitors like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for his signature.

Reports suggest that Real’s newly appointed manager, Jose Mourinho, played a crucial role in their late but successful bid for Cucurella.

Last season, Cucurella was vocal about certain decisions at Chelsea that he disagreed with, including the dismissal of head coach Enzo Maresca on New Year’s Day.

These comments fueled rumors of his growing dissatisfaction at Stamford Bridge. While Cucurella faced no repercussions for his remarks, Enzo Fernandez was internally suspended for two matches after hinting at a possible move to Madrid.

Following confirmation of his Chelsea exit, former Premier League forward Deeney took aim at Cucurella by suggesting he had been part of the problems that led to the Blues ultimately finishing 10th and missing out on European football.

‘I think there is an element with Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez, you weren’t playing good enough to talk, so shut up,’ Deeney said on talkSPORT.

‘This new generation of players, when things go well, tell me how great I am, pat me on the back and go on social media and tell you how great they are, the fans are wonderful.

‘When they lose, it’s not me, it is the manager, the owner, the board, it’s all of these different things.

‘I was here a year ago for the Club World Cup and they were absolutely loving it.

‘Fast forward eight months and it’s should have got rid of that manager. It’s like come on, you were part of the problem.

‘For me it is twofold. If you are Real Madrid, I don’t like that backline they could possibly have with [Denzel] Dumfries from Inter Milan, Konate, Rudiger and now him [Cucurella]. That does not give me a back four that is ready to compete on the biggest of stages.

‘For Chelsea they have got [Jorrell] Hato, a young kid who looks mustard but that is a leader you’ve lost and for a long time we have said they don’t have leaders.’

Cucurella, who recently insisted he would be happy to remain at Chelsea, had spoken out in March over decisions taken by the club’s hierarchy.

The defender had said Maresca, who is set to join Man City, was the ‘most important’ manager across his time at the club, and said the relationships he built meant players would ‘die for him’.

Cucurella highlighted the stability that Maresca brought and cited the faith Arsenal have had in Mikel Arteta as an example of the rewards that follow patience.

He added: ‘The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision.

‘To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season…’

He also told the Athletic that Chelsea’s policy of signing young, up and coming stars was ‘discouraging’ to players who wanted to ‘win big things’.

‘I understand this is part of the club’s policy, and that they want to take this direction – signing young players and looking to the future,’ he said. ‘But, for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this make you feel discouraged,’ he said.

‘We have a good core of players. The foundations are there. But to fight for major trophies, you need more. Signing young players only might complicate achieving those goals. Against PSG, we lacked players that had gone through situations like that.’

Cucurella was signed by Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 in a deal worth up to £63m.

In the club’s farewell message, a Blues’ spokesperson thanked him to his efforts at the club, and wished him ‘every success’ in the ‘next stage of his career’.

Daily Mail Sport previously reported how the full back was among those in line to leave the club this summer, after they missed out on European football for next term under Alonso.

Iran Kicks Off World Cup Journey in L.A. Amid Historic Peace Deal

0

In brief

  • The Iranian national football team’s first match of the FIFA World Cup is against New Zealand.
  • Hours after the squad arrived in Los Angeles, a peace deal between the US and Iran was announced.

In a dramatic display, hundreds of anti-regime demonstrators greeted the Iranian national football team at their highly anticipated match, marking one of the most politically charged events at this year’s FIFA World Cup. This confrontation unfolded during the Group G opener against New Zealand, which concluded in a 2-2 draw at the Los Angeles Stadium on Tuesday morning (AEST).

The match came on the heels of a significant announcement: the United States and Iran had brokered a peace agreement aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This backdrop only intensified the atmosphere surrounding the game.

Outside the stadium, a sea of demonstrators brandished the Lion and Sun flag, which served as Iran’s national emblem before the 1979 revolution and is now a symbol of opposition banned within the country. Alongside these flags, many waved the banners of Israel and the United States, adding an international dimension to the protest.

The tension escalated as an anti-regime protester vocally confronted Iranian supporters queuing to enter the stadium. In a provocative act, the protester flipped off the awaiting fans, seized an Iranian flag from a supporter, and proceeded to stomp on it, intensifying the charged atmosphere.

FIFA banned fans from bringing the pre-revolution flag into World Cup matches, citing its rules prohibiting flags or political apparel.

But numerous people carrying the lion-and-sun flag or wearing t-shirts with the symbol passed through security at the stadium without issue.

Iran had threatened to halt the match if unofficial flags were brought in or slogans were chanted, but the match proceeded as planned.

Assal Pahlevan, an organiser with Democracy for Iran, told SBS News she was protesting the flag ban.

“This is not democracy,” she said.

“Any sport, it’s volleyball or basketball or football, it doesn’t matter which sport is it, you can say whatever you want to say.”

Los Angeles is home to one of the largest Iranian diaspora communities in the world, many of whom are descendants of Iranians who fled after the revolution and oppose the Iranian government.

Inside the stadium, the Iranian national anthem was booed, but Iran also enjoyed support from many in the crowd who erupted into cheers when they equalised in the first half.

“I’m here to support Iran. We’re going to win this game,” said 57-year-old Mehdi Jafari, wearing an Iran football shirt, going into the stadium ahead of the match.

“We’re very proud of our country. We’re here to support Iran. I think we should all let go of the politics and just go in and cheer on the Team Melli.”

Iranian team arrives hours before ceasefire announced

After months of debate about whether they would participate in the tournament, the Iranian national football team arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, local time, from Tijuana, Mexico, where they had relocated their base camp due to security concerns related to the conflict.

Hours after their arrival, US President Donald Trump announced an agreement to end hostilities between the two countries, which began when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in February.

Iran’s participation in the tournament would have marked the first time in the World Cup’s 96-year history that a country played while at war with a host nation.

Iran will have to travel from Mexico to the US for each of their three group matches, with their visas permitting them to remain on US soil for less than 48 hours and requiring them to return to Mexico after each game.

Earlier on Tuesday, Belgium and Egypt drew 1-1 in the other Group G opener.

Speaking through a translator at a press conference at Los Angeles Stadium, Iranian coach Amir Ghalenoei said he was “very happy to be representing the great, proud and strong nation of Iran”.

“I hope that football will bring about joy and enjoyment, and bring closer the cultures and countries,” he said.

Several Iranian officials have been denied entry, including the national football federation’s president, and Ghalenoei said the travel and visa denials had negatively affected the squad.

Hadi, a Socceroos fan who was raised in Iran but moved to Australia as a teenager, and is part of the Hazara community from Afghanistan, told SBS News the peace deal was “good for the world”.

“This conflict … the whole world [is] suffering from that,” he said.

“We don’t know what’s gonna happen in the background, but on the paper it looks like it’s good.”

Police Investigate Russian Ties to Arson Incidents at Properties Linked to UK PM Keir Starmer

0

On Monday, officials unveiled fresh insights into a string of arson attacks aimed at properties linked to U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, suggesting that the perpetrators were orchestrated by a Russian-speaking coordinator.

Authorities have disclosed that the individuals involved were lured with promises of payment to execute a well-planned offensive in London during May 2025. This campaign included targeting a vehicle and two properties associated with Starmer.

According to a recent investigation, the mastermind behind these operations is suspected to be a diplomat with expertise in information warfare, acting as part of a larger Russian sabotage and disinformation strategy managed from Moscow, as reported by the Kyiv Post.

Convictions have been secured for Ukrainian national Roman Lavrynovych, 22, and Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc, 27, for their roles in the arson scheme. Lavrynovych was reportedly recruited via a Russian-speaking Telegram handler known as “El Money,” based on police and courtroom accounts. The Kyiv Post also noted that Carpiuc has Ukrainian roots. Meanwhile, a third individual, Petro Pochynok, 35, was found not guilty.

The incident underscores the geopolitical tensions that continue to ripple through Europe, highlighting the vulnerabilities even at the highest levels of government.

According to police, Lavrynovych was recruited through Telegram by a Russian-speaking handler saved in his phone contacts as “El Money,” who allegedly directed him through a series of increasingly serious tasks while promising payment in return.

“Look, you attacked the home of a very high-ranking person in Britain. I’ll send you the money you need to leave the city,” the handler allegedly wrote in one message cited by investigators, according to Kyiv Post.

The handler reportedly offered Lavrynovych Russian citizenship in exchange for carrying out the attacks and frequently voiced support for Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the outlet. Evidence also suggested that “El Money” was trained in information warfare by propagandists and intelligence operatives, the outlet said.

Investigators added that Russian operatives allegedly coordinated the campaign remotely through social media platforms and Telegram, using fake far-right and Muslim online communities to sow division and fear in the U.K., Kyiv Post said.

The Russian Embassy has reportedly denied any involvement, rejecting “any attempt to associate Russia or its foreign ministry with unlawful activities,” according to the report.

According to officials, the three arson attacks occurred over a five-day period in May 2025.

The first attack took place on May 8, when a Toyota vehicle formerly owned by Starmer was set ablaze.

A second fire was set on May 11 at the entrance of a residential property that was managed by a company in which Starmer had previously served as a director and shareholder.

The third attack occurred on May 12 at a house that is owned by the prime minister.

“The actions of the two men involved in these arson attacks were incredibly reckless, and it was sheer luck that nobody was killed or injured,” Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said in a statement.

Police said Lavrynovych was arrested on May 13 last year after detectives linked the suspect to the attacks through CCTV footage and phone records indicating he had conducted reconnaissance ahead of the fires.

Authorities said Carpiuc was arrested on May 17 in the departure lounge at Luton Airport moments before boarding a flight to Romania.
