Arsenal’s Pursuit of Leicester’s Rising Star Jeremy Monga: Inside Insights, Transfer Fee, and Overcoming Doubts

0

Max Dowman is widely regarded as a promising English talent, and Arsenal is on the brink of acquiring another player of similar caliber.

Jeremy Monga, a Leicester City prodigy, is just six months older than Dowman but boasts three times the number of first-team appearances. Coaches at Leicester are confident in Monga’s potential, believing he can match the Arsenal starlet’s prowess. Should Arsenal succeed in their pursuit, the two could soon be teammates.

Following their recent drop to League One, Leicester City is prepared for the likely necessity of selling Monga, but they are resolved not to do so at a bargain. Sources from Daily Mail Sport suggest that Leicester will set the price for the talented 16-year-old winger at up to £10 million. Although Monga is right-footed, his preferred position is on the left flank.

Once Monga signs professional terms, Leicester can rightfully demand a transfer fee. This scenario echoes Jude Bellingham’s situation when he signed with Birmingham in July 2020, ensuring they received a significant fee, approximately £25 million, when he transferred to Borussia Dortmund shortly afterward.

If everything unfolds as anticipated, Leicester can take pride in their strategic approach. Had Monga departed a year earlier to clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea, or Paris Saint-Germain, the matter would have been settled through a tribunal to determine compensation.

Just relegated to League One, Leicester know they are likely to have to sell their young winger Jeremy Monga, 16, but they are determined not to do so on the cheap

As long as Monga is still a Leicester player on his birthday, as he should be, the Foxes will be able to call the shots.

If Arsenal win this race, they will leave several rivals disappointed. So why the fuss? In 1,193 minutes at senior level, Monga has one goal and two assists. For comparison, Dowman has one of each in 477 minutes. But it is always about more than raw statistics.

Sometimes coaches see a body swerve, say, or a sudden acceleration, and their pulse quickens. Steve Cooper knows a thing or two about young players having led England Under 17s to the World Cup in 2017 and was impressed immediately by Monga.

It was Cooper, during his short spell at Leicester, who invited Monga, direct, tricky and quick, to join the first-team squad and took him to Old Trafford for a Carabao Cup tie in October 2024. Monga made his debut in the Premier League aged 15 years and 271 days and did not look out of place. Where his education allowed, he had been training with the first team for months before that.

‘(His talent’s been noticed) by the whole world,’ said then-Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy in January 2025. ‘That’s why we have him with the first team where possible. I want him to be part of the long-term future of the club.’

Being ‘the wonderkid’ at a place like Leicester is double-edged, though. When a club of this level have a jewel on their hands, it is tempting to treat them differently from other youngsters. If they transgress, on or off the field, are they always subjected to the same disciplinary measures as a player of lesser ability?

Will academy coaches really read the riot act to their best prospects when they know these players could walk away within a week, potentially costing the club millions of pounds? It is a difficult balancing act.

In Monga’s defence, few players his age have passed the 1,000-minute barrier in senior football, and he has never appeared out of his depth in the first team. Generational talent, though? That label should not be applied lightly.

'(His talent’s been noticed) by the whole world,’ said then-Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy in January 2025 about Monga

Some observers believe Monga would do better to stay at Leicester and try to help them out of League One

Some believe Monga has yet to develop that bloody-mindedness that allows a winger to continue running at his full back, even if he has lost the ball or taken a hefty whack.

‘If I’m playing against him, I’m kicking him into Row Z,’ one former EFL defender tells Daily Mail Sport. ‘If he gets tackled the first time he takes on a full back, he doesn’t seem to want to try it again.’

Those same observers believe Monga would do better to stay at Leicester and try to help them out of League One. They do not believe he is ready to play for a top club like Arsenal and could therefore risk losing his way in their Under-21 side. Arsenal’s current left-wingers Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard do not need to fret just yet.

‘He might be volleyed all over the place in League One but it would make him tougher,’ says one experienced scout.

Leicester’s financial status means it is unlikely Monga will stay. Consecutive relegations have hit hard and the Foxes were already in a precarious position. Homegrown players are a lifesaver for the balance sheet and Leicester need to cash in.

Would Arsenal allow him to rejoin the Foxes on loan? That may be the smartest move. That way, the Gunners could monitor his development while ensuring Monga continues to gather first-team experience in a familiar environment.

For all the mistakes Leicester have made in recent years, and there have been far too many, they should be proud of their academy, and Monga’s progress is a feather in the cap for their legendary academy scout Bill Wall.

Wall discovered Monga and, cleverly, Leicester ensure these scouts stay in contact with youngsters throughout their pathway. Unlike many academies, Leicester rarely recruit Under-16 players from different parts of the country. Not only do such deals require compensation, Leicester feel they might dilute the strong local feel they have sought to create at their £95m base in the Leicestershire countryside.

Of the nine academy players in the squad for Leicester’s Carabao Cup match at Huddersfield in August 2025, all but goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk and defender Bade Aluko had been with the club since Under-9 level.

Four of them – Will Alves, Hamza Choudhury, Luke Thomas and Louis Page – are from the Leicester area.

These are the foundations for Leicester to build on. Even if Monga’s peers are not as talented as he is, Leicester should still have a local core around which to construct next season’s promotion campaign, and the club’s wider recovery.

If Monga moves to Arsenal, it will prove their academy structure is sound. Now is the time to make proper use of it.

Tragic Final Moments: Texas Freshman, 18, Fatally Shot by Police

0

The family of a Texas State University freshman, who was fatally shot in an incident involving a sheriff’s deputy, is shedding light on what they describe as the tragic final moments of his life.

Eighteen-year-old John Mendoza Jr. lost his life on June 1 after an encounter with Deputy Kevin Tippit of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department. The shooting occurred following an attempted traffic stop.

Earlier in the evening, Mendoza had been enjoying time with three friends at a park in Lake Jackson, about 55 miles south of Houston. Deputy Tippit reportedly began following them in his vehicle and soon attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

According to law enforcement, Mendoza attempted to evade the stop, leading the deputy on a mile-long chase to his home. The pursuit ended tragically when Mendoza was shot inside his car as he pulled into his garage.

However, the Mendoza family contests this version of events. They assert that the young man, who was unarmed, was unjustly shot despite having his hands visible and raised in surrender.

They told the Daily Mail through their attorney Charles Adams that he was not trying to evade cops, and that he kept telling his friends he wanted to go and get his dad, who was just a short drive away.

Demanding Tippit face charges, Adams called Mendoza’s death an ‘execution.’

Tippit was sensationally fired by the force and branded a disgrace by the sheriff.

Mendoza’s family said he was home for the summer from his freshman year at Texas State when he was killed. They said he had hopes of playing for the college football team after being a standout high school player.

Adams said the incident unfolded when Tippit followed Mendoza and three of his friends from a park, adding that the deputy followed them before eventually turning on his sirens.

While admitting that Mendoza did not stop, he said the 18-year-old drove slowly back to his nearby home, remaining below the speed limit despite driving an SRT Dodge Challenger ‘capable of great speeds.’

Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman said this week that he had fired Tippit following the shooting, as he condemned Mendoza’s death as a ‘tragedy.’

While authorities say Tippit is under investigation, Adams said the Mendoza family will not be satisfied until the deputy is ‘arrested and charged with murder.’

Following news of Tippit’s firing, Adams said in a statement to the Daily Mail that he was ‘encouraged’ by the sheriff’s decision.

Mendoza’s family said he was home for the summer following his freshman year at Texas State University and was spending the evening with friends when he was killed on June 1

‘But it is not the consequence the family needs to start the journey to healing,’ the lawyer continued.

‘Any other person in Brazoria County that shot an unarmed man on camera would be arrested and charged with murder. That is what John’s family is seeking.

‘Thank you to everyone who has supported the memory and legacy of John and the Mendoza family throughout this very difficult time. Please keep demanding justice.’

Mendoza was shot once in his car in the garage of his family home – just seven seconds after he stopped the alleged pursuit, Adams said.

The student was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Adams said all four occupants in the car had their hands up when Tippit opened fire, and alleged that the deputy issued ‘no directives or commands’ before shooting.

The attorney added that Mendoza likely wanted his father with him for his interaction with law enforcement because he was ‘scared’ by Tippit following him, and said he made ‘no effort to escape.’ The teen was rattled and confused, Adams said.

He said authorities have not established any reason that Mendoza would have been pulled over in the first place, and said even if the teenager did try to evade the police, the charge does not ‘subject a defendant to the death penalty.’

Following a two-week investigation into the shooting, Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman said he fired Tippit, condemning his actions in a scathing video statement.

Stallman described Mendoza’s death as a ‘tragedy’ and said ‘regardless of any investigation, he will not be forgotten.’

He said the Texas Rangers were conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, and said the District Attorney’s office would determine whether Tippit would face charges.

The sheriff said that while he does not control whether Tippit will be prosecuted, he decided ‘based on the ongoing investigations and the information available to me’ that he would fire Tippit.

The move to fire Tippit within two weeks of the shooting marks a significant punishment from the sheriff’s department, with law enforcement officers typically placed on paid administrative leave following an officer-involved incident.

Stallman said his decision was ‘due to the policy violations’ and ‘the handling and discharging of his firearm’ during the traffic stop.

Brazoria County District Attorney Tom Selleck said on June 3 that his office was conducting a ‘thorough and comprehensive investigation’, and said the case would be presented to a grand jury to consider charges.

Selleck’s office said the process could take several months before evidence is gathered and presented to a grand jury.

Mendoza’s sister, Allyson, said in a GoFundMe that they were fundraising ‘to help raise awareness, seek accountability, and honor the life of my little brother.’

Allyson alleged that Tippit had targeted her brother and followed him home from a park before shooting him ‘without warning or direction’.

She said paramedics took more than 20 minutes to get to the scene, accusing emergency services of failing to arrive in time to save Mendoza.

‘Those lost minutes mattered. Where was the sense of urgency?? From the unjustified and aggressive use of force by the officer who shot John, to the delayed emergency response,’ she wrote.

‘John was failed at every stage. Our family is left with heartbreaking questions.’

Stallman also directly addressed Mendoza’s family in his video message, telling them: ‘John Gabriel Mendoza Jr lost his life, your family lost a son, friends lost someone they loved.

‘Regardless of any outcome of any investigation, your family’s loss is permanent and your grief is real.

‘I can not begin to understand the pain that your family is experiencing, but I wanted you to know that your loss is seen and that John Mendoza Jr will not be forgotten.’

Montana Tucker Embraces Her Jewish Heritage: A Personal Mission to Educate and Inspire

Montana Tucker is making waves as a multifaceted talent in Hollywood, proudly embracing her roles as a singer, dancer, activist, and Jewish woman.

“My heritage is deeply significant to me, especially as the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors,” Tucker, 33, told Us Weekly at the Race to Erase MS Gala, hosted by Nancy Davis and sponsored by L’Agence, on June 5. “My grandparents endured unimaginable hardships simply because they were Jewish. My faith is central to my life, and I strive to approach every interaction and endeavor with love and kindness to illuminate the true essence of the Jewish people.”

While some celebrities choose to keep their religious beliefs private, Tucker is open about her faith, sharing insights into her spiritual life both online and in her personal interactions.

At the Fairmont Century Plaza, Tucker graced the red carpet, proudly displaying jewelry that reflected her Jewish identity.

With Easter Sunday approaching, numerous Hollywood figures are publicly celebrating their faith. Through platforms like social media, podcasts, television, and film, many celebrities offer fans a look into their spiritual journeys. For religious leaders, such openness is seen as an opportunity to spread love and understanding.

“I think we all should be proud of who we are no matter what religion we pray to or what faith we are, what ethnicity we are,” she explained to Us at the charity event, which raised $1.8 million for MS research. “We all should be proud of where we come from and who we are. … Your faith should never offend another person. And I am really grateful that I have a platform of 14 million followers that I can express who I am and share who I am. I hope that inspires others to do the same.”

At the same time, Tucker acknowledged that being Jewish in America isn’t always easy.

Rising antisemitism in 2025 has had a deep impact on the American Jewish community’s feelings of safety and security, according to the American Jewish Committee.

Nearly 91 percent of American Jews said that violent antisemitism in 2025 made them feel less safe as a Jewish person in the United States.

“In the past three years, it’s been a really, really difficult time for the Jewish people. My faith has been questioned a lot,” Tucker shared. “I feel like people have told me, ‘Maybe you should stop wearing your jewelry so often to show that you’re Jewish,’ or ‘Maybe you should hide who you are.’ But I did the complete opposite.”

The stars are getting lit this Hanukkah. “Before we light the candles, we all meditate on, ‘What is a miracle that I could create for somebody else?’” Ashton Kutcher, who does not identify as Jewish, told Noa Tishby in a December 15 interview of celebrating Hanukkah with wife Mila Kunis and their two kids. “That, […]

Whether she speaks out on social media, red carpets or through her performances, Tucker hopes to make her grandparents proud.

She also envisions a future filled with more love and acceptance and less hate and judgment.

“As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, I feel it is my duty, it is my responsibility, to do this,” she said. “There’s so much propaganda that is out there right now. There’s so much misinformation, and people are just being hateful towards Jewish people, towards any group of people. It’s becoming popular to just be hateful and negative, and I think we need to change that narrative and be more positive and loving towards everybody.”

Zendaya’s Heartfelt Reaction to Rue’s Fate: Exclusive Insights from ‘Euphoria’ Creator Sam Levinson

0

Zendaya experienced “a very emotional reaction” upon discovering that her character, Rue Bennett, is set to meet a tragic end in the Season 3 finale of “Euphoria.”

During Variety’s “Half Hour With” series on Wednesday, the show’s creator, Sam Levinson, revealed that he and Zendaya had a “tough” conversation when he first proposed the conclusion of Rue’s storyline to her.

“We have a deep affection for the character Rue,” Levinson remarked, commending the two-time Emmy Award-winning actress for her remarkable portrayal that brought the character to life.

He described Zendaya, 29, as “a gifted actor,” noting that Rue’s charm, lovability, and humor would not have been the same without her performance.

“It was indeed a challenging discussion,” Levinson admitted. “Throughout the filming process, it lingered in our minds. Ultimately, she understood the direction I was taking.”

During the Season 3 finale, Rue suffered an accidental overdose after she took fentanyl-laced pills given to her by crime lord Alamo Brown (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje).

Levinson confirmed the manner of Rue’s death was to honor late co-star Angus Cloud, who died from an accidental fentanyl overdose in July 2023 at the age of 25.

Cloud, Levinson said, “was someone whom we loved dearly and really rooted for and saw the best in.”

The TV producer also shouted out Colman Domingo’s performance as Rue’s mentor, Ali Muhammad, who finds her dead body.

“When when it came time to shoot the scene, we also had Colman Domingo there, who’s been one of my closest collaborators for over a decade and a grounding force in Zendaya’s life as well,” Levinson explained.

“That kind of camaraderie really helped this sequence feel authentic and meaningful,” he continued. “We’ve been doing this for eight, nine years together, so it was a beautiful couple of days as we were shooting those scenes, because I think we knew how audiences would respond to it.”

Levinson previously defended the decision to kill off Rue, which shocked and angered some of the HBO show’s audience.

“People like Rue don’t make it,” he said in a post-finale HBO interview.

“People relapse. They f–k up. They’re not ready to get clean,” he continued. “There’s no reason to sugarcoat it. I wanted to tell this story for Angus and for people who weren’t granted a second chance.”

Zendaya has not publicly reacted to Rue’s death.

But her mom, Claire Stoermer, weighed in on the show’s ending the day after the finale with a cryptic post on Instagram.

“Lots of messages in my DM’s from people about last night’s episode,” she began her message. “I’m gonna keep my thoughts to myself.”

Stoermer added, “Definitely made me sad….and other emotions as well. But just gonna leave it right there…”

The HBO series also killed off Jacob Elordi’s character, Nate Jacobs, which similarly upset fans.

In one of his post-finale interviews, Levinson confirmed Season 3 is the show’s last.

“In terms of the story that we set out to tell, which is the story about addiction and its consequences,” he stated, “this feels like the end to me.”

Tyler Robinson Court Hearing: Defense Attorneys for Charlie Kirk Shooting Suspect Aim to Prevent Death Penalty Pursuit by Prosecutors

0

In Provo, Utah, the legal team representing Tyler Robinson, who stands accused of murdering Charlie Kirk, made a formal request to the court on Friday. They urged the judge to prevent the prosecution from pursuing the death penalty, citing concerns over the prosecutors’ public remarks regarding a bullet fragment found in Kirk’s body.

The controversy arose after prosecutors addressed media speculation suggesting that the bullet fragment might clear Robinson of involvement. This speculation has fueled a slew of unverified conspiracy theories, ranging from the possibility of a second shooter to claims that the incident could have been staged. Charlie Kirk was killed during a speech at Utah Valley University, a tragedy that has since captured significant public interest.

Robinson, a 23-year-old from southwestern Utah, faces charges of aggravated murder for the September 10th shooting of Kirk, a well-known conservative speaker who was fatally shot in the neck during his appearance on the Orem campus. At this point, Robinson has yet to submit a plea in the case.

Attorneys defending Robinson have accused the prosecutors of conducting a “media tour” that involves discussing expert analyses of the bullet fragment. They argue this violates judicial orders limiting public commentary about the case. The defense team is particularly concerned about how media portrayals could mischaracterize their client amidst the intense scrutiny the case has generated.

In response, the prosecution maintains that their communications with the media were necessary to address misconceptions stemming from initial ballistic reports. These reports revealed that the bullet fragment did not match the weapon believed to have been used in Kirk’s murder, a crucial detail that has been pivotal in shaping public perception of the case.

In court filings, Robinson’s attorneys made public the failure to conclusively link the bullet fragment with the rifle and said it appeared to be “exculpatory evidence,” without noting that the finding was preliminary and that further testing was planned. That spurred stories by some by outlets raising questions about the prosecution’s case: A March 30 headline in the U.K.-based Daily Mail reported that the bullet that killed Kirk “did NOT match” the rifle that investigators say was used to kill Kirk.

Authorities have said DNA consistent with Robinson’s was found on the trigger of the rifle, the fired cartridge casing, two unfired cartridges and a towel used to wrap the rifle.

“The rules expressly allow lawyers to set the record straight,” Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard wrote in a court filing.

Ballard argued Friday that he didn’t speak to the media about case specifics and only spoke generally about how ballistics testing can be inconclusive. He said his goal “was to respond to the substantial undue prejudicial effect of the media stories.”

Defense attorney Richard Novak disagreed, saying Ballard did not speak to the media using general terms and tried to “influence public perception” of the case.

“What was going on here was an attempt to influence the jury pool,” Novak argued.

State District Judge Tony Graf has said he will issue his decision about the contempt allegation at a later date.

Earlier Friday, Graf declined a defense request to halt the proceedings while they appeal a June 1 order in which the judge declined to bar cameras from the courtroom.

The ruling comes ahead of a key hearing scheduled to begin July 6, when prosecutors must show they have enough evidence to warrant a trial. That would mark the most significant presentation of evidence to date in the case, which has so far focused on matters of media access.

Before Friday’s hearing, the defense team pointed to another criminal case in which prosecutors were accused of contempt and suggested that one potential remedy would be to bar the state from seeking the death penalty.

While the judge in that earlier case disagreed that an order barring the death penalty was merited, Robinson’s attorneys noted that “the court did not conclude that such a remedy was beyond its authority where the facts support it.”

Texas Shooting Suspect Had Previous Gunfire Incident with Police Days Before Tragedy, Officials Report

In a tragic incident on Friday morning, a gunman unleashed a barrage of bullets in Midland, West Texas, killing one person and injuring ten more. Authorities revealed that the suspect had engaged in gunfire with police just days before this attack.

The shooter, identified as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, was already a wanted man when he targeted officers and civilians in Midland. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Villarreal eventually took refuge in a deserted veterinary clinic after the assault began, prompting police to respond to active shooter reports.

After several tense hours, police discovered Villarreal deceased inside the clinic, although they did not disclose the cause of death.

Midland Mayor Lori Blong stated that authorities utilized robots and drones to ascertain the suspect’s demise.

Villarreal, of nearby Odessa, was wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer after firing multiple times at a Midland police officer on Wednesday, the state’s public safety agency said.

The officer who tried to pull over Villarreal fired back, but Villarreal drove away and his vehicle was found empty a short distance away, investigators said. The officer was not injured, authorities said.

As police responded to Friday’s shooting, dozens of squad cars and law enforcement vehicles descended along what’s normally a busy roadway lined with hotels and auto businesses a few miles west of Midland’s downtown.

Andrea Mendias said she heard what sounded like a small explosion at the closed veterinary clinic next to the body shop where she works and saw a number of heavily armed police officers rush into the parking lot. Some appeared to go inside the building.

Mendias said she earlier heard what sounded like at least 40 gunshots.

Video from Mendias showed officers pouring out of the back of an armored police vehicle and police deploying robots into the area.

Midland Memorial Hospital said four people underwent surgery and that five had been treated and released.

The city with about 140,000 residents sits in the heart of the state’s oil and gas region and was near the site of a deadly shooting rampage in 2019.

In that shooting, a gunman who had been fired from his oil services job killed seven people and wounded two dozen others while firing at random as he drove around the Odessa and Midland areas. The two cities are more than 300 miles (482 kilometers) west of Dallas.

Former NFL Star Darron Lee Charged with First-Degree Murder in Tragic Death of Girlfriend Gabriella Perpetuo

0

Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, marking a dramatic turn in the athlete’s life post-football.

Lee, who once donned the jerseys of the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Kansas City Chiefs, is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Gabriella Perpetuo. This grim development was confirmed by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee, where the alleged crime took place.

Initially, Lee faced charges not only of murder but also of tampering with or fabricating evidence. However, the latter charge has since been dismissed. As stated by Hamilton County District Attorney Cody Wamp, the focus is now entirely on the murder charge. “We will focus solely on the murder of Gabriella,” Wamp asserted on June 11, according to the Associated Press.

If found guilty, Lee could be sentenced to life in prison. Further, the state is currently weighing the possibility of pursuing the death penalty, a decision that is expected to be made in the coming weeks.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Lee has entered a plea regarding the charges. When approached for comments, his defense attorney, Mike Little, chose not to provide any statements to the media outlet Oxygen.

On Feb. 5, authorities responded to a CPR call at a home in Ooltewah where they discovered Perpetuo dead, according to an arrest report obtained by Oxygen.

Perpetuo’s injuries were severe: A stab wound to her abdomen, body bruises, black eyes with heavy swelling, dried blood on her face and neck and a large circular bitemark on her shoulder, according to the report.

At the time, Lee told authorities that he had discovered Perpetuo unconscious on the couch and suggested that she might have fallen in the shower earlier.

However, physical evidence did not support his story.

There was broken glass scattered across the kitchen and extensive amounts of blood throughout the home, including spatter on the walls and flooring, according to the report.

Using forensic testing, crime scene investigators later discovered suspected blood evidence in areas of the home they believed had been cleaned up after the crime.

Lee was detained, but he refused to speak to authorities.

Later, while collecting Lee’s clothing, investigators observed blood inside his cell phone case, according to the arrest report. They also observed what they described as injuries consistent with a physical altercation, including a facial injury, hand lacerations and chest wounds.

Lee was arrested on Feb. 6 and booked into the Hamilton County Jail.

In March, prosecutors presented evidence in court that Lee had allegedly used ChatGPT to cover his tracks.

He allegedly wrote on the AI platform, according to NBC News, that his fiancée had done “her crazy thing again and now she’s messed up.”

“She has two swollen eyes (I didn’t do anything, self inflicted) she stabbed herself, slit her eye?” he allegedly wrote, according to the news outlet. “Idk but she isn’t waking up or responding, what do I do?”

Prosecutors also alleged that Lee asked ChatGPT how to obtain medical assistance without alerting authorities, and whether falling could cause bruising and “two stabby looking wounds,” according to the Associated Press.

When Lee was arrested, he was on probation in Ohio and Florida for three alleged assaults that pertained to his mother, the mother of his child and another man, according to court records obtained by the Associated Press.

Burke Accuses One Nation’s Hanson of Disdain for His Sydney Region Following ‘Hit List’ Remarks

0

IN BRIEF

  • At a rally on Wednesday, Pauline Hanson shared a “hit list” of Labor-held seats One Nation plans to target.
  • In response, Tony Burke has drawn attention to comments Hanson made about Western Sydney in a February interview.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke has responded robustly to Pauline Hanson after the One Nation leader announced her party’s intention to target several Labor-held electorates, including Burke’s own seat of Watson in Western Sydney, in the upcoming federal election.

“She has expressed disdain for my area of Sydney, and it’s important to recognize this: one cannot claim patriotism while harboring animosity towards the modern face of Australia,” Burke remarked.

Burke emphasized his affection for Australia, stating, “I cherish Australia for who we truly are, not for some fictional version of the nation that never existed.”

He acknowledged One Nation’s consistent presence in his constituency, saying, “One Nation regularly contests in my region of Sydney and will do so again. It’s a democratic process, and everyone is free to participate. However, I must send a message to those who seek to belittle their fellow Australians: we are a greater nation than that.”

Burke’s comments follow Hanson’s release of a “hit list” on Wednesday, highlighting Labor frontbenchers’ seats that One Nation aims to challenge in the next election. The list includes the electorates of Chris Bowen, Clare O’Neil, and Madeleine King, alongside Burke’s.

Burke’s seat of Watson is one of the most multicultural seats in Australia and includes the suburbs of Belmore, Greenacre, and Lakemba — the latter of which has a Muslim population of over 61 per cent.

In February, Hanson told ABC News Breakfast she’d felt unwelcome when visiting Lakemba.

“I’ve been there myself in Lakemba. You feel unwanted, you’re not wanted to be there,” she said.

In the same interview, Hanson said there were “certain” suburbs “people can’t go into” and named Lakemba when asked to be more specific.

‘Western Sydney here we come’

The rally in Western Australia on Wednesday — at which Hanson revealed her party’s Labor-targeted “hit list” — was not the first time One Nation has indicated it has plans to target electorates in Western Sydney.

After the party’s historic win in a May by-election in the regional NSW seat of Farrer, One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce said: “Western Sydney here we come.”

While a recent RedBridge/Accent poll suggested One Nation was now the most popular political party in the country — with a projected primary vote of 31 per cent to Labor’s 28 — Hanson’s party may not enjoy such levels of support in Western Sydney.

One Nation only received 3.2 per cent of the vote in Burke’s seat of Watson in the 2025 federal election — a 2 per cent decrease from the 2022 election.

However, in Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen’s more-outer-west Sydney seat of McMahon, One Nation polled somewhat higher, taking 8.73 per cent of the primary vote — a 3.69 per cent increase from 2022.

During her Wednesday speech, Hanson said Bowen’s seat was the “first one on my list”.

Michael Bublé Kicks Off Canada’s World Cup in Style with Spectacular Toronto Ceremony

Michael Bublé set the stage for Canada’s World Cup kickoff in Toronto, creating an electrifying atmosphere on Friday night. The event reached a poignant crescendo with Alanis Morissette’s stirring rendition of the national anthem, “O Canada,” performed in front of thousands of fervent fans.

The streets of downtown Toronto were alive with a festive spirit as throngs of supporters gathered and marched to the stadium earlier in the day, their excitement building as the highly anticipated kickoff approached.

As the crowd settled in for the first of six matches hosted by the city, festivities began with an artist ceremony helmed by William Prince, setting the tone for the evening. Singer Jessie Reyez entertained the audience with her performance next to a massive model of the World Cup trophy, further heightening the excitement.

Amid this vibrant atmosphere, Michael Bublé made a grand entrance just before the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina commenced. Flags representing each team in the tournament were paraded onto the field, setting the stage for Bublé, who stood in the center circle and captivated the audience with his 2022 hit “Bring It On Home To Me.”

The allure of the World Cup was such that even the typically media-shy Alanis Morissette took the spotlight, delivering her moving version of “O Canada” to the delight of the assembled fans, marking a memorable start to the tournament.

Violinist Aleksandar Gajic, meanwhile, performed the anthem of Canada’s opponents.

Canada, hosts of the tournament for the first time, headed into the game desperately looking for their first ever win in the competition.

The team is considered Canada’s ‘golden generation’, spearheaded by star striker Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies – the latter unfortunately absent from the opening game due to injury. It was a terrible start, though – they fell 1-0 down after 21 minutes through a header by Jovo Lukic.

It was Shakira who, 24 hours earlier, lifted the curtain on the tournament with a star-studded performance at Mexico’s iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for the very first game of the biggest World Cup ever.

It set the tone for a successful start by another one of the co-hosts, with Mexico cruising to a 2-0 victory against South Africa in a game that saw three players sent off.

There was also trouble outside the stadium, with protestors fighting with riot police outside the venue.

The Daily Mail witnessed the carnage unfold, as protesters – some reportedly made up of the families of those missing in the Mexican drug war – attempted to breach the stadium and were forcibly pushed back by police. A man had a heart attack outside the venue in an unrelated incident.

Just 10 minutes before the start of the Mexico-South Africa tournament opener, hundreds of demonstrators approached the grounds from the north-east side, attempting to enter the stadium’s inner ring.

They threw flares and rocks at officers and smashed a lorry parked nearby. Riot police were quickly deployed and pushed the demonstrators back up the road, firing tear gas and throwing rocks back in the process.

There was no sign of the same trouble marring events in Canada on Friday afternoon as Buble’s glitzy performance got underway, following in the footsteps of pop icon Shakira.

Remarkably, Fox – the host broadcaster in the United States – skipped the majority of Buble’s performance – only showing a shorter to American soccer fans. They made the same move for Shakira’s show in Mexico, too.

Later on Friday, the tournament finally begins on American soil when the USA team meet Paraguay in Los Angeles.

That opening ceremony is headlined by Katy Perry – who is dating former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau – while hip-hop star Future will also feature.

Canada’s team, meanwhile, will play Qatar in the second game next Thursday in Vancouver.

They’ll round off the group stage against Switzerland on June 24.

How Steven Spielberg’s Debut Film Predicted the Unveiling of UFO Secrets: A Cinematic Foreshadowing

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Disclosure Day”

When it comes to extraterrestrial cinema, Steven Spielberg is no stranger to the genre. Many fans’ minds might drift back to his 1977 classic, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” a film he both wrote and directed. However, Spielberg’s journey into the realm of UFOs and alien encounters began over a decade prior, long before “Close Encounters” captivated audiences. While most film aficionados might recognize the 1971 TV movie “Duel” as Spielberg’s foray into feature films, with “The Sugarland Express” in 1974 marking his theatrical debut, his initial full-length feature dates back even further to 1964. Remarkably, Spielberg crafted this film at the tender age of 17.

This early venture, titled “Firelight,” set the stage for his recurring fascination with aliens. Much like “E.T.,” “Close Encounters,” “War of the Worlds,” and now “Disclosure Day,” “Firelight” delved into the mysteries of alien encounters. Set against the backdrop of a small Arizona town, the film depicted strange UFO activities leading to a tense narrative where aliens plan to abduct the town’s residents for a human zoo. Spielberg later revisited and refined this concept, transforming it into the Hollywood spectacle known as “Close Encounters.”

With “Disclosure Day,” Spielberg shifts gears, presenting a hopeful narrative of alien visitation. Here, the extraterrestrial visitors aim to enlighten and elevate humanity, despite our historical tendencies to imprison and mistreat them. This optimistic portrayal contrasts with his earlier works, but unfortunately, revisiting “Firelight” for a direct comparison is an elusive task.

Though “Firelight” originally ran for an impressive 140 minutes, only a scarce four minutes of footage remain accessible today. The film’s initial premiere was a family affair, with Spielberg’s parents supporting their son’s vision by renting a local theater to showcase his creation. This early endeavor laid the groundwork for Spielberg’s illustrious career in exploring the unknown realms of alien life.

Spielberg’s first UFO movie is impossible to watch today

“Firelight” clocks in at a pretty substantial 140 minutes, but today, you’ll be lucky to find four of them online. The film was produced by Steven Spielberg’s parents, who rented out a local movie theater for a proper debut when the film was completed.

Though the movie is recognized in a sort of canonical sense (it would be hard to ignore such an early feature effort from one of America’s most famous living filmmakers), the director himself seems to have little love for the project in retrospect. While many would call “Ready Player One” Spielberg’s worst film, Spielberg has given “Firelight” that dubious honor, though in fairness, a film made for $500 by a teenager with no formal training perhaps deserves a bit more grace.

The footage that is available is full of close-up camera shots, dynamic movement, rudimentary special effects, and a level of gruesomeness more common in Spielberg’s earlier films. All are hallmarks of his career, either at various stages or throughout its entirety, and the subject matter in particular draws a direct lineage across 62 years from “Firelight” to “Disclosure Day.”

The spirit of Firelight lives on in Disclosure Day

Steven Spielberg has made some of the best alien movies of all time, and in 2026, he’s made another. “Disclosure Day” doesn’t have the iconic childhood nostalgia of “E.T.” or the late ’70s psychedelic enigma of “Close Encounters.” Instead, it’s a story about the deep divisions of humanity and the ways in which true wonder and discovery can cross them — or at least, it tries to be about that.

Spielberg has clearly always been fascinated by the possibility of life beyond our world and of knowledge, just out of reach, which could change everything. That fascination takes the shape of terror in “Firelight,” but in most of his later alien films, including “Disclosure Day,” it embraces a more nuanced tone. Yet despite those differences, it’s still the same sense of wonder that carries through the films, charting more than six decades in filmmaking for one of our most iconic directors.
