Illegal immigrant truck driver charged in deadly California crash
Claudia Cowan reports on a tragic incident in Lodi, California, where Manveer Singh, an undocumented immigrant, is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter following a fatal semi-truck accident. The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that Singh had been apprehended and released at the Arizona border earlier in 2023. In response, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, along with other federal officials, are advocating for ‘Delilah’s Law,’ a measure aimed at preventing undocumented immigrants from obtaining commercial driver’s licenses.
In a separate case, Oklahoma authorities have charged an undocumented immigrant with the deaths of four individuals. The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Michael Rosario-Cruz, allegedly caused the fatalities while driving under the influence in the wrong direction on a highway, according to statements released on Tuesday.
Rosario-Cruz, after being discharged from the hospital, was taken into custody and faces multiple charges. These include four counts of second-degree murder, two counts of DUI causing significant injury, possession of an open container, illegal possession of a firearm, carrying firearms while intoxicated, and wrong-way driving.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that the incident occurred early Friday when Rosario-Cruz drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 in Canadian County, resulting in a head-on collision with another vehicle.

All four people in the struck vehicle, which caught fire, were killed. They ranged in age from 18 to 20, authorities said. The victims were identified as Kiercey Hickson, 20, Quincy Jones, 19, and Haliegh Salazar and Brad Palmer, both 18.
“Driving impaired is a reckless, life-changing decision,” the Highway Patrol said in a social media post announcing the charges. “The loss of these young lives will have a lasting impact on countless family members, friends, and communities.”
A spokesperson for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol told Fox News Digital that Rosario-Cruz is the subject of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer request, meaning ICE has asked to be notified when he is released from custody so they can arrest him and begin deportation proceedings.

Nancy Salsman, a retired teacher, said three of the victims were once students in her second-grade classroom.
“You just make that connection that never goes away,” she told the news outlet. “They’re always your kids. And when something like this happens we come together.”
Singer Ray J, known for his hit “One Wish,” was reportedly admitted to a Las Vegas hospital following an MMA bout with YouTube personality Supa Hot Fire, whose real name is DeWayne DeShawn Stevenson (also known as DeShawn Raw).
According to TMZ, Ray J sought medical attention just hours after being knocked out in the fight. Sources close to the R&B artist revealed that he checked into the hospital approximately two hours post-match on Saturday and has remained under medical care for the past two days.
Medical professionals are currently conducting tests to determine if Ray J, whose full name is William Ray Norwood Jr., sustained a concussion during the altercation.
The insider also mentioned that since the incident, Ray J’s heart rate has shown signs of slowing down, prompting further medical evaluation.

The pair faced off in a match hosted by livestreamer Adin Ross’ UFC Apex over the weekend, and it was quickly shut down in the second round when Supa Hot Fire, 35, delivered the now-viral knockout blow to Ray J, 45.

In Tucson, Arizona, Carol Ross radiates joy as she guides her tap and jazz dance troupe through their routine. The group, composed of women over 50, is a testament to her lifelong passion for dance.
“Dancing has been a part of my life forever, and there’s nothing like it,” Ross exclaimed. She established the Rodeo City Wreckettes 23 years ago, at a time when many are considering winding down their careers.
Now at 87, both Carol and her husband John, who shares her age and love for dance, embody what many older adults are beginning to embrace: dancing is an excellent activity for maintaining health. Experts affirm that whether it’s Western line dancing, ballroom, salsa, tap, or Zumba, moving to music offers numerous benefits.
“For older individuals, dancing is incredibly beneficial,” stated Julio Loya, a nurse and coordinator of geriatric programs at Tucson Medical Center.
Why dancing helps balance, strength and more
Like other forms of exercise, dance aids in weight loss, enhances strength, reduces the risk of falls, boosts mobility and flexibility, and even supports cognitive health.
“ It engages their brain, it changes their mood, and it connects them socially while getting them moving,” said Loya. “And it’s fun. Everybody has a good time.”
Dr. Thomas Johnson, a geriatrician at the UCHealth Seniors Clinic in Aurora, Colorado, said he remembers one man in particular whose passion for dance was so strong that he willed himself to attend one last class before he died in his late 80s.
“His No. 1 priority was that he danced until the day that he died,” Johnson said of his patient.
Johnson said dance can improve the balance of his patients at the clinic, which serves about 2,500 people 75 and older a year.
He said older patients can benefit from adding two to three dance sessions to the 150 minutes of aerobic exercise he recommends for them each week, because dancing often involves movements that help with balance, such as walking backward or standing on one foot.
Meeting people by dancing together
The Wreckettes practice their routines during two-hour sessions at least twice a week in a rented dance studio.
After studying ballet as a girl, then moving on to everything from ballroom to tap as an adult, Ross said it made sense to keep dancing when she and her husband moved from Philadelphia to retire in Tucson.
John Ross is a key part of the Wreckettes’ routines, typically joining his wife for at least one number. At one recent practice, it was a saucy saunter to Merle Haggard’s “Let’s Chase Each Other Around the Room.”
“I learned early on that dancing was a great way to attract the chicks,” joked John Ross, who slid across the floor like a much younger man.
Wreckettes member Cindy Soffrin said that watching her mother suffer as she aged convinced her to stay active as she got older.
“My mom was sedentary the last 20 years of her life. It was pretty rough,” said Soffrin, 74.
For 67-year-old Gail Kowalski, joining the Wreckettes three years ago meant finding new friends after her husband died and she moved from Utah to Tucson.
“Plus, it’s so dang fun,” Kowalski said.
The fun of performing
The Wreckettes perform throughout the year, from holiday events to rodeo shows, dressing up in a series of matching sparkly costumes.
But they all said what they love the most is being hired by retirement homes to perform for memory care patients. Wreckette members take turns picking a favorite charity to donate their earnings.
“When we first arrive, people will be distracted or sleeping,” said Soffrin. “But once the music comes on, they perk up right away.”
A similar dance group for older women in Las Vegas, the Vegas Golden Gals, also performs at retirement homes, said Cheryl Cortez, the group’s president. They add pompoms to their routines.
“I must now know close to 40 routines,” said Cortez, 69. “And that alone has to be great for the memory.”
How to begin dancing when you’re older
If you want to start moving to music, here are some tips from health professionals and dance instructors:
BEFORE STARTING: Check with your health provider before starting a dance or any exercise program. Choose something simple to start, like line dancing rather than intricate tango steps.
FIND A CLASS: Check with a YMCA, parks and recreation department, or senior or community center. Community colleges often have dance classes, sometimes tailored for older people. Local dance studios and YouTube videos are other options. If you have Medicare Advantage insurance with the Silver Sneakers benefit, find out if your local gym has Zumba or other dance classes you can attend for free.
BEFORE THE SESSION: Dress comfortably for easy movement, and warm up and stretch before class.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Have fun! You are doing great things for your mind and body.

Josh Jacobs, a prominent player for the Green Bay Packers, has been taken into custody in Wisconsin after surrendering himself to law enforcement on multiple domestic violence charges.
The situation unfolded following a complaint filed on May 23, leading to a thorough investigation. This culminated in the running back’s arrest on Tuesday afternoon, where he was booked into Brown County Jail.
Jacobs, who is 28 years old, is now facing a set of serious charges. These include battery-domestic abuse, criminal damage to property-domestic abuse, disorderly conduct-domestic abuse, strangulation and suffocation, and intimidation of a victim.
Notably, jail records from Brown County indicate that the charge of strangulation and suffocation is classified as a felony, whereas the other four charges are considered misdemeanors.
In response to these developments, the Packers shared a statement with the NFL Network, expressing their awareness of the situation. “We are aware of the matter involving Josh Jacobs. As it is an ongoing legal situation, we will withhold further comment,” the team stated.
Meanwhile, the Hobart-Lawrence Police Department released their own statement, revealing on Saturday at approximately 8:37 am, officers were dispatched to a disturbance complaint involving Jacobs.

In a statement provided to the NFL Network, Jacobs’ attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, said: ‘Josh vehemently denies the allegations, and this matter is in the early stages of investigation with important evidence that has not yet been made public. We ask for fairness and restraint while the judicial process takes its course.’
The Daily Mail has approached Jacobs’ attorneys for comment.
The NFL are also ‘aware of the report’ and have ‘been in contact with the club’, according to the NFL Network.
The Packers star, who turned 28 in February, has spent two years with the franchise after originally being drafted by the Raiders in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
His contract in Green Bay is set to run for the next two seasons, after signing a four-year deal worth $48million with the franchise in March 2024.

Court documents allege Zigler later admitted to investigators that he picked Sperino up in Granite City, beat her with a metal bat or steel pipe at his residence and dumped her body in a field.

Zigler has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder alleging he intentionally beat Sperino with a bludgeon, causing her death. Prosecutors are seeking to keep Zigler behind bars pending trial, arguing the charges involve a violent and non-probationable offense.
An arrest warrant filed in Madison County Circuit Court shows Zigler remains in custody.
At an initial court appearance Tuesday, Associate Judge James Hackett appointed a public defender to represent Zigler and scheduled a detention hearing for Wednesday afternoon.

Reports have emerged showcasing images of an unexpected sight: a UFC octagon taking shape on the White House lawn. This unusual development ties back to former President Donald Trump, an ardent enthusiast of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, who previously announced his intention to host a fight on the South Lawn. This event is set to be part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States, coinciding with Trump’s milestone 80th birthday next month.
Trump elaborated on the ambitious plan, stating that the UFC setup will include a substantial “5,000-seat arena right outside the front door of the White House.” This grand vision is designed not just to stage a sporting event but to blend entertainment with national celebration in a unique way.
To cater to the expected large audience, additional arrangements are being made. Large screens will broadcast the fights in a nearby park known as the Ellipse. The UFC has announced plans to distribute as many as 85,000 free tickets, ensuring that fans and spectators can partake in the festivities from both the White House lawn and the Ellipse, making this a truly monumental occasion.
Trump has said that the finished UFC project will feature “a 5000-seat arena right outside the front door of the White House.”
Additional large screens broadcasting the fights will be set up in a park at the nearby Ellipse, and the UFC has said it plans to issue as many as 85,000 free tickets to accommodate spectators at both locations.

Brazil’s Alex Pereira will meet France’s Ciryl Gane for the interim UFC heavyweight title. Then Spanish-Georgian lightweight champion Ilia Topuria takes on interim champ Justin Gaethje, one of just two Americans who currently hold even a share of the UFC’s 11 championship belts.
BP has abruptly removed Chair Albert Manifold from his position, effective immediately, due to issues related to governance and conduct. According to four sources, these issues involve allegations of aggressive and unacceptable behavior towards his colleagues.
A BP representative chose not to elaborate on the situation further. Attempts to contact Manifold for his comments were unsuccessful.
Manifold’s sudden departure comes less than eight months after he assumed the role to oversee a strategic overhaul at BP. This follows a series of controversies and leadership disruptions within the company. Notably, former BP CEO Bernard Looney was dismissed less than three years ago after misleading the board about his personal relationships with colleagues.
Amidst these leadership changes, Manifold had recently stepped into the position, only to see Murray Auchincloss, Looney’s successor, leave unexpectedly in December without explanation. In response, former Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill was swiftly appointed as BP’s fifth CEO since 2020, tasked with refocusing the company’s efforts on oil and gas, moving away from the renewable energy initiatives previously announced by Auchincloss last year.
BP board unanimously decided to oust Manifold
In a Tuesday statement, BP announced that its board had unanimously concluded Manifold should no longer hold the roles of chair and director. This decision comes even though Manifold had the support of activist hedge fund Elliott, which has acquired roughly a 5% stake in BP.
“This follows serious concerns raised to the board related to important governance standards, oversight and conduct,” BP said.
“Albert has helped bring a welcome focus and pace to BP’s transformation. However, the board has been surprised and disappointed to learn of governance oversight and conduct issues it deems unacceptable and has taken decisive action,” said senior independent director Amanda Blanc. Blanc oversaw Manifold’s appointment in October.
Four sources with knowledge of the matter, including one close to BP’s board, cited alleged unacceptable and aggressive behavior with different colleagues across the company as one reason for Manifold’s ouster. One source said the board had received enough information following a whistleblower report to ascertain that there was a pattern of unacceptable behavior.
The sources declined to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Elliott declined to comment.
BP shares were down almost 10% after the announcement and their trading briefly halted. They later pared some losses to trade down around 4%. An index of European energy companies was down around 0.1%.
Manifold was appointed amid takeover speculation
Manifold, who had never held a job in the energy industry before BP, had made a name for himself as the chief at building materials producer CRH whose portfolio he reshaped. He also moved its primary listing from Ireland to the US and the share price rose.
BP announced his appointment last year after years of share underperformance against its rivals had prompted persistent takeover and break-up speculation.
Under Manifold, BP’s board shrank. Shell finance chief Simon Henry, who only joined BP in September, was among those leaving.
In April, at BP’s annual general meeting, the board failed to get two of its resolutions accepted by shareholders and Manifold’s appointment as chair got less support than typical.
While the board stood united at the AGM, proxy adviser Glass Lewis said at the time Manifold was ultimately accountable for BP’s decision to exclude a resolution filed by climate activist group Follow This and thus recommended a vote against him. His appointment was confirmed by around 82% of votes, which is below a typical tally near 100% for directors.
Ian Tyler, a former chief of British construction group Balfour Beatty and on BP’s board since last year, will be interim chair.
Nuclear capabilities, sanctions, and the Strait of Hormuz remain sticking points in US-Iran negotiations.
Experts warn that the longer the conflict drags on, the greater the global economic impact.
An enduring peace agreement between the United States and Iran remains challenging, despite assertions from U.S. President Donald Trump that progress is underway.
Nearly three months have passed since the United States, alongside Israel, initiated military strikes against Iran, yet significant issues persist. Chief among these unresolved matters is Iran’s nuclear program, which continues to be a sticking point despite numerous negotiation rounds.
According to an expert speaking with SBS News, the deadlock over nuclear capabilities could potentially prolong the conflict for several more years.
International organizations, including the International Energy Agency, have raised alarms, cautioning that the ongoing hostilities are nearing a point where they could severely disrupt global fuel supplies and cause substantial economic damage.
In the meantime, U.S. military forces have resumed their offensive actions against Iranian targets, characterizing these as “self-defense” measures. These strikes have focused on missile installations and naval vessels suspected of deploying mines.
In a lengthy post to social media following the attacks, Trump said negotiations are “proceeding nicely”.

“It will only be a Great Deal for all or, no Deal at all — Back to the Battlefront and shooting, but bigger and stronger than ever before — And nobody wants that!” he wrote.
Meanwhile Iran’s foreign ministry said US strikes represented a “gross violation” of a tenuous ceasefire.
Iran’s top negotiator and foreign minister were in Doha on Monday for talks with Qatar’s prime minister on a deal — something US secretary of state Marco Rubio pointed to as evidence that a more lasting truce was still possible.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said on Monday that a deal with the US was “not imminent” although progress had been made.
“To say that we have reached a conclusion on a large portion of the issues under discussion would be correct,” he told reporters in Tehran. “However, to say that this means an agreement is on the verge of being signed is not something anyone can claim.”
Shifting objectives
In a video statement delivered shortly after the US’ opening salvo earlier this year, Trump said the aim was to “eliminate imminent threats from the Iranian regime”.
This included disabling Iran’s long-range missile capabilities and its nuclear enrichment program. Trump also encouraged the Iranian people to “rise up” and take control of the government.
Further US demands have also included ending Iranian support for its regional proxies, including Hezbollah and Hamas.
Days later, Rubio said the US had entered the war to preempt Iranian retaliation against US interests in the region, given that Israel was on the verge of striking Iran first. The timeline for the war was also quickly pushed out by Trump from “four to five weeks” to “as long as it’s necessary”.
A provisional two-week ceasefire, agreed to on 8 April, was extended by Trump indefinitely on 21 April to allow diplomatic solutions to be found.
“What they were originally hoping for was regime change,” David Smith, associate professor in American politics at the United States Studies Centre, told SBS News. “It became very clear early on in the conflict that that wasn’t going to happen.”
“So, Trump has since then really invoked the long-standing aim of preventing Iran from ever having a nuclear weapon.”
Iran’s nuclear capacity
During peace talks at the start of April, Iran issued a 10-point plan that called for an end to hostilities against itself, Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen, commitment to lifting sanctions, the release of frozen assets held by the US, and “full payment of compensation for reconstruction costs” for damage caused to the country.
In exchange, the country offered a full commitment not to seek possession of nuclear weapons, a guarantee on which both Israel and the US are adamant.
On Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that “President Trump and I agreed that any final agreement with Iran must eliminate the nuclear threat entirely”.
“This means dismantling Iran’s uranium enrichment facilities and removing enriched nuclear material from its territory,” he added. An Iran free of such capabilities is a longstanding goal for the Israeli leader.

However, Baghaei confirmed that the current framework will not include nuclear weapons deals as those will be “subject to separate discussions” later.
“At this stage, we are not discussing the details of the nuclear issue”, he said.
Trump later posted to Truth Social that Iran’s enriched uranium would either be “turned over” to the US or “destroyed in place” in the country.
Smith said that, while the Islamic Republic has shown some willingness to hand over enriched material, “we’ve seen no indication from Iran that it’s prepared to give up its right to enrich uranium”.
“It really sees that as just a non-negotiable part of its national sovereignty, but Trump seems determined that that’s what he has to get out of Iran, because that would be a step further than what Obama was able to do.”
Under the terms of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action signed between the US and Iran under Barack Obama, Iran agreed to limit its uranium enrichment to well below weapons grade. It also agreed to reduce its enrichment stockpile by 98 per cent and maintain no more than 300 kgs for the next 15 years.
Trump unilaterally took the US out of the deal in 2018 — after frequently describing it as “the worst deal ever” — and Iran subsequently returned to enriching uranium.
“Trump is really facing a problem of his own making at the moment,” Smith said.
He said he would not rule out the war with Iran lasting for the rest of the year.
“I wouldn’t even rule out that it’s still going in 2028.”
“The intractability of this basic sticking point about Iran’s right to enrich uranium I don’t see getting resolved anytime soon … It took two years for the Obama administration to negotiate the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. We could be looking at a similar timeframe.”
Two choices for the US
On Monday, Trump added a further item to the list of aims: more signatories to the Abraham Accords, a set of diplomatic agreements brokered by Trump during his first term that seek to normalise relations between Israel and other Middle Eastern nations.
The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco all became signatories, recognising Israeli statehood and engaging in bilateral diplomatic and trade relationships.
Smith describes the accords as a means of Israel circumventing the issue of Palestinian self-determination — something many Middle Eastern nations refuse to engage with Israel over — and as a foundation for a regional alliance against Iran.
“This is an attempt to, if Trump does get some underwhelming deal, to make it look a lot more significant than it actually is,” he said.
The US now faces two options: continuing the fight against a country that has shown itself to be resolute in not backing down or capitulating and accepting whatever deal it can get, Smith assesses.
“The only way out is that Trump just accepts that he is not going to get what he wanted and finds some way to spin it,” he said. “But it’s now going to be very hard for him to do that, given everything that he has kept promising.”
The Strait of Hormuz and supply shocks
Earlier this month, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) outlined three scenarios for how a prolonged conflict in the Middle East and a continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz might play out in Australia.
In its “adverse scenarios” — in which the vital waterway remains closed and the supply of oil and other essential commodities continues to be restricted into the first quarter of 2027 — the RBA predicts Australia could see inflation hit 5.2 per cent and unemployment rise above 5 per cent by the end of 2028.
Smith suggests this may be the direction the world is heading.
While the Strait of Hormuz has never been physically blocked, cargo ships have avoided travelling through it due to fear of attack by Iran or collision with sea mines.
Dozens of commercial vessels have been attacked or targeted by Iran since February, with at least 12 seafarers killed or missing. The US has also sought to enforce a blockade on ships entering or departing Iranian ports.
Smith predicts the conflict could result in a Cold War-style stalemate in the channel, driving oil prices even higher than they currently stand and raising inflation across the globe.
That is, as Smith said, “unless Trump is prepared to face more reality than he’s been prepared to face so far”.
