Open Heaven 25 May 2026 MESSAGE

In Luke 5:1-10, Peter did not fail because he wasn’t diligent, hardworking, or skilful. He had those characteristics, yet he failed. However, when help came from God, he succeeded. Your strength, skills, connections, and diligence are good, but if the Lord is not supporting you, they cannot make you successful.

Psalm 127:1 says:
Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

Except the Lord guides and directs a fellow in his or her decisions, his or her labour will be in vain. Without God’s support, a person will look like a fool who doesn’t know how to get to the city (Ecclesiastes 10:15). Some young people try to do many things because they think they have the strength to do them. However, the Bible makes us understand that although the glory of the youth is their strength (Proverbs 20:29), they will faint and be weary and utterly fall (Isaiah 40:30). This means that while the strength of the youths can help them achieve some things, it is not enough. It can fail them at some point, but if they wait on the Almighty God, they will be able to soar like eagles.

In today’s Bible reading, Peter felt he was strong enough to withstand temptations, yet he failed. His physical strength was not sufficient to sustain him in the day of adversity. His overconfidence in himself showed when he was sleeping instead of praying (Matthew 26:40-43). Believers who rely on their strength in the face of temptation will fail. Many have fallen because they felt they were too prayerful to fall into sin. They believed they were too wise and strong to fall into temptation, but eventually, they let their guard down.

1 Corinthians 10:12 warns us never to think that we can stand without God’s help. People who think in such a manner eventually fall. Today’s memory verse tells us that a person who puts his confidence in flesh is cursed. Samson didn’t fall the day Delilah called a man to cut off his hair; rather, he started falling the moment he began to trust in his strength. The day a person stops trusting in God is the day his or her downfall begins. I pray that you will never come to a point where you feel you are strong enough to do without God, in Jesus’ name.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

The inspiring story of Olaudah Equiano, the writer who became a leading figure in the British abolitionist movement, is well known. He was a slave taken from Southern Nigeria who later played a role in shaping public opinion about slave trade in the late 18th century England. His story reminds us that judging people solely by their past ignores the potential for redemption and transformation. Equiano’s transformation from a slave boy to one of the most influential leaders of the 18th century is a testament to the idea that people can grow beyond their past.

That illustration resonates perfectly with Saul of Tarsus, featured in today’s text. His story was set in Damascus in the early Christian era. God sent an older disciple named Ananias to go and minister to Saul, a newly converted, notorious hitman who terrorised the Christian community. Understandably, Ananias was afraid to approach Saul because of his reputation as a fierce persecutor of believers in Christ. He did not know God had transformed Saul and prepared him to receive further instructions and ministration from the disciples he planned to destroy.

This story teaches us not to write people off because of their past. Many people have faced great challenges or made mistakes, but that does not mean they cannot become better versions of themselves and be vessels of honour in God’s hands. Whereas Ananias dwelt on the old story of Saul, God viewed him in terms of what he would accomplish for Him. We often find God’s chosen vessels disguised as treasures in an earthen vessel. Do not be intimidated by appearances, but preach the gospel to everyone, including those who oppose and persecute Christians. Jesus said we should pray for them, not against them.

Are there people you have written off, thinking they are beyond redemption? Today’s text should impress on you the need to change your perspectives. Do not be afraid to reach out to those whom God sends your way; otherwise, you may be passing over another Saul of Tarsus.

Tampa Unveils ‘Stay & Play’ Program to Combat Rising Teen Takeover Concerns


In Tampa, Florida, city officials are actively seeking solutions to provide teenagers with safe and engaging activities this summer. This comes amid rising apprehension about “teen takeovers,” events that have recently caused disruptions and violence in various communities nationwide.

To tackle this issue, Tampa’s Parks and Recreation Department is collaborating with the Tampa Police Department to roll out an expanded range of summer programs. Starting this Memorial Day weekend, their “Stay & Play” initiative, along with late-night basketball sessions, will offer teens constructive ways to spend their time.

Rahmarion Smith, an 18-year-old who frequents the Copeland Park Recreation Center, attests to the positive impact these programs have. “My mom always tells me to stay inside and avoid trouble, so I just play basketball,” he shared, highlighting the center’s role in keeping him focused on beneficial activities.

These programs are increasingly vital, according to city officials, as law enforcement continues to address the challenges posed by large teen gatherings. Often organized through social media, these “teen takeovers” demand proactive community measures to ensure safety and order.

City leaders say programs like these are especially important as law enforcement agencies respond to growing concerns over large gatherings of teens, often organized through social media, called ‘teen takeovers.’

Recreation leader Lanisha Muldrow said this year’s summer programs are beginning earlier than usual in response to those concerns.

“I believe that it’s because of the teenagers’ takeover. It’s been a lot of negative, so we just seem like we just opened up early for them to have an outlet,” Muldrow said.

Earlier this month, Tampa Police Department officers arrested 22 people — most of them between the ages of 12 and 21 — during a disturbance at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. 

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw said the group started fights and caused disruptions downtown.

“This is a nationwide concern, and this is something in the city of Tampa that we will not tolerate,” Bercaw said.

Smith said he hopes other teens think about the long-term consequences of getting involved in that kind of activity.

“If you have kids and your kids probably see you on the news, like from a long time ago, and they’re like that, what is going on? You know? So, I just want to be a good influence on my family and my kids,” Smith said.

Program organizers said the summer activities will include more than just basketball. Teens will also have access to hair-braiding, chess, gaming, culinary classes, and more throughout the summer.

The city’s “Stay & Play” program will run from 6 p.m. to midnight at several recreation centers, including Copeland Park Recreation Center, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Complex, Jackson Heights Recreation Center, Port Tampa Recreation Center, and Springhill Recreation Center.

The Police Athletic League’s Midnight Basketball program will run from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Tampa Police Athletic League.

City officials said summer programming will resume May 29, the final day of classes for public schools in Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Programs will continue daily, including Sundays, through Aug. 8.

Officials said nine Parks and Recreation centers across Tampa will remain open every day for the duration of the summer.

Shocking Revelation: College Student’s Tragic Kitchen Murder Unveils Unthinkable Betrayal Within Friend Group

On the morning of February 15, 2012, Paula Cardwell followed her usual routine by checking on her daughter, Anna Catherine Cardwell, as she slept.

However, after returning from a brief outing an hour later, Paula was met with a horrific scene—her daughter had been viciously murdered in their home in Slapout, Alabama.

Recalling the shock to Oxygen’s The Killer Among Us, Paula said, “When I walked in the back door, I saw blood everywhere.” She noted the trail of bloody footprints leading into the kitchen, where Anna Catherine lay lifeless on the floor.

In a state of panic, Paula immediately dialed 911, desperately informing the dispatcher, “I just came home and my daughter’s dead on the floor.”

Investigators discovered that Anna Catherine had been shot four times, including a deadly wound to the back of her head. With no evidence of forced entry, the investigation quickly shifted toward those closest to her, suspecting that the perpetrator might be someone familiar, hiding within her circle of friends.

Who Was Anna Catherine Cardwell?

Anna Catherine was remembered by those who knew her as a confident, kind-hearted college student, who dreamed of becoming a teacher.

“I don’t think she knew a stranger,” family friend Melinda Peevy recalled. “If you were a stranger, she would make you into a friend. You could not ignore her, that’s how her personality was.”

Growing up, Anna Catherine was part of a close-knit group of friends in the small town of Slapout.

The 20-year-old also caught the eye of some of the boys in town. Although she’d recently broken up with a long-term boyfriend, at the time of her death, Anna Catherine was newly dating Nick.

“Anna Catherine liked the guys that were fun, that were polite and were good to her, that were good to her family and her friends,” her mom remembered. “And if they were not, she just wouldn’t stay with them.”

What Happened to Anna Catherine Cardwell?

The college student’s  life came to a devastating end on Feb. 15, 2012. 

After being called to the scene, police discovered a blood trail leading from the back door of the home to the kitchen, where she was laying on the floor.

“It was obvious to us that there was one fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head,” Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin explained. “That’s like an execution-style killing.”

Given that Anna Catherine was still wearing her pajamas, investigators believed she likely got up sometime after her mother left the house at 9:15 a.m. to answer the door and was attacked. 

“The blood trail is telling us that as she’s running, she’s bleeding,” Elmore County Sheriff’s Det. Troy Evans said. “The blood is striking the ground and you can tell her movements from just being able to look at the blood patterns and see where she had gone.” 

The evidence suggested Anna Catherine was shot in the hallway then began to run through the residence and tried to make it out the back door. She left a bloody handprint on the wall as she tried to flee before her killer dragged her back into the kitchen and fired the fatal shot with a 9 mm handgun.

Investigators Speak to Anna Catherine’s Friends, Love Interests

Investigators also learned that Anna Catherine’s car was missing. 

As news of the murder spread, Anna Catherine’s friends—including her best friend Lacy—began arriving at the home. 

“She was upset, she was emotional,” Evans remembered. “But she really couldn’t tell us anybody she suspected of committing this crime.”

With the investigation underway, authorities took a close look at Anna Catherine’s ex-boyfriend and new romantic interest, but both were cooperating fully and there was nothing to suggest that either was involved.

Detectives caught their first break when Anna Catherine’s car was found around 5 p.m. in the parking lot of a local grocery store about 10 miles away.

“Finding her car was huge for the investigation,” Chief Deputy District Attorney C.J. Robinson said. “That car is basically a rolling crime scene.”

Investigators Look Into Anna Catherine Cardwell’s Friend Josh Caspari 

As authorities searched the car for DNA and fingerprints, they spoke again to Anna Catherine’s best friend Lacy. She shared that on the morning of the murder, she texted Anna Catherine, but never received a reply. 

A few hours later, she learned from a friend that Anna Catherine had been killed and called her own boyfriend Josh Caspari—but Josh had been noticeably absent from the group who gathered at Anna Catherine’s home. 

Lacy explained that was because she had ended the rocky on-again, off-again relationship. 

“Josh was not happy with Anna,” Evans explained. “Anna convinced Lacy to break up with Josh. She didn’t think Josh was a good guy. She didn’t think Josh was good for Lacy.” 

Other friends confirmed that Josh blamed Anna Catherine for the end of his relationship.

With the new potential lead, investigators began to take a closer look at Josh. After bringing him in for questioning, Josh told detectives that the morning Anna Catherine was killed, he’d called his mother to take him to a friend’s house to pick up his truck. Yet, his mother told detectives she’d actually picked him up in the same parking lot where Anna Catherine’s car was discovered. 

“At this point, his mother destroyed his alibi,” Evans said. “He had lied to us about his whereabouts.” 

Detectives Find Stolen Guns in Josh Caspari’s Home

During a search of Josh’s home, they found a stock pile of weapons including shotguns, rifles, pistols and two handguns, steroids and a large stack of cash. They learned the guns had been stolen in a recent home invasion robbery of a former police officer, carried out by two masked men.

Investigators were able to link the crime to Josh and his roommate Cody Abernathy and both men were arrested. It didn’t take long for Cody to begin to talk.

“Abernathy’s statement to us was basically, ‘You just do what Josh wants you to do,’” Evans said. “They’re all scared of Josh.”

In exchange for leniency, Cody confessed to carrying out the home invasion and admitted to driving Josh to the Cardwell home the morning of the murder, although he insisted he had no idea what his friend planned to do.

Eventually, Josh confessed to the shooting, insisting he wasn’t a “monster.”

“I don’t know how to explain it. It wasn’t meant to happen like this,” he told investigators. “I didn’t have it planned out like this.” 

Yet, he refused to provide specifics of the shooting, claiming it was a “blur.” 

Who Killed Anna Catherine Cardwell?

The evidence against Josh grew even stronger when his fingerprints were found in her vehicle and one of the stolen guns was determined to be the murder weapon.

Cody wasn’t charged in connection to the murder, but was sentenced to 10 years for the home invasion. 

Josh pleaded guilty to capital murder in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“I feel like it did make us all grow up really quick and realized like, this is real,” friend Lindsay McBrayer said. “It could happen to you and it could happen in your circle and it can happen in your town.”

Euphoria Shocker: What Happened to Nate in Season 3 Episode 7?

The seventh episode of Euphoria‘s third season concludes with the shocking demise of one of its most beloved characters, taking viewers by surprise.

**Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Euphoria Season 3 Episode 7 “Rise and Shine,” currently available on HBO Max**

In an unexpected twist, Nate (portrayed by Jacob Elordi) meets his end in this episode, not at the hands of the menacing loan shark Naz (played by Jack Topalian), but through a fatal encounter with a rattlesnake. (Yes, rattlesnakes are extremely venomous and can be deadly!)

At the start of Season 3, Nate and Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) seemed to be living an idyllic life, full of comfort and luxury. However, their lavish lifestyle was sustained by a hefty loan of a million dollars from Nate’s “partner” Naz. This arrangement was based on the promise that Naz’s coffin business would thrive due to the retirement community Nate was developing. But when an endangered flower was discovered on the construction site, the state of California brought a halt to the Sun Settlers project, leaving Nate in a precarious financial situation.

The previous episode left audiences with a chilling cliffhanger: Cassie received a gruesome package containing Nate’s severed ring finger and a note demanding her to answer her phone. This week, the plot thickens as Naz pressures Cassie for the money. Unfortunately, Cassie is at a disadvantage, having just deleted her OnlyFans account, which was a significant source of income. As Cassie fails to produce the cash, Naz, alongside his enforcer Artur (Matthew Willig), storms into her apartment, taking her hostage.

Naz tells Cassie that she has 72 hours to figure something out. When Cassie asks why 72 hours, he says that’s the amount of time it takes to die of dehydration. Horrified, Cassie believes Naz is going to deprive her of water for that amount of time. “I’m talking about Nate,” Naz says.

We then cut to the Sun Settlers site where Nate has been buried alive in a coffin under the ground with only a single drain pipe for light or water. Although he calls out, no one, including his own brother, hears him. So does Cassie get Naz his money? How does Nate die?

Euphoria Season 3 Episode 7 Ending Explained: How Does Nate Die in Euphoria?

Nate Jacobs doesn’t actually die of dehydration on Euphoria, but from a rattlesnake who slithers down the drainpipe and bites him.

Let’s back up for a minute, though. When Cassie realizes she and Nate’s lives are in danger, she turns to the one person in her life she always turns to when she’s in trouble: Maddy (Alexa Demie). Naz and Cassie call the shrewd young woman with the ultimatum that Naz gets his money or he cuts up Cassie’s beautiful face.

Maddy then decides to appeal to Alamo (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) on Cassie’s behalf. She is forced to wear a degrading swimsuit and to join the pimp in his hot tub to plead her case. Maddy’s argument is that Cassie is a money tree and that the million dollar investment is worth it. It’s also implied that Maddy performs sexual favors for Alamo, but we don’t see them. We then see Maddie, dressed in a skimpy dress with a Virgin Mary illustration, watch Alamo arm himself with a gun and prepare a bag full of cash.

When Alamo and Maddy arrive at Sun Settlers after dark, he makes Maddy take the money to Naz. “It’s your deal. Go make it,” he says. A terrified Maddy carries the bag into the harsh light of Naz’s headlights. She drops the bag and then Naz makes a still bound Cassie retrieve it. When he opens it, he just says, “Is this a fucking joke?” And then Alamo shoots Naz.

As Naz lies dying in the dirt, he pleads with Artur to help him, but the hit man switches sides. Alamo shoots Naz in the head and we learn the bag was full of packs of playing cards. Maddy is shaken by all this, while Cassie calls down through the pipe words of encouragement as Artur uses the construction equipment on site to retrieve the coffin. When the lid is open, Cassie screams and Maddy looks down in horror. Nate is already dead and a still living rattlesnake is wrapped around his body.

The camera pans up to confirm Nate is dead. His eyes are glassy, his tongue blue and bloated. RIP Nate Jacobs.

The final episode of Euphoria comes out on Sunday, May 31 at 9 PM ET on HBO and HBO Max.

TOPIC: He Made Us Great And Made Us Kings (Rhapsody of Realities 25 May 2026)

And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing (Genesis 12:2).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

Some people struggle with the idea of greatness. They resist it because it sounds excessive or inappropriate. So they say, “Don’t talk about me being great; that’s too much.” But God made us great because we’re the seed of Abraham. Our greatness was His idea; we didn’t ask for it.

It wasn’t Abraham who said, “…O, God, make me great.” It was God who said to Abraham, “…I will bless thee, and make thy name great…” (Genesis 12:2). So, as a Christian, when you shrink back from greatness, it’s incongruous with your identity and with God’s plan for your life. Ponder the fact that God reiterated with unmistakable clarity in Genesis 17:6 what He had said in Genesis 12:2, “And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee” (Genesis 17:6).

Observe that it says, “Kings shall come out of thee.” This is consistent with what the Scripture reveals about us in Christ: “…much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:17). The literal sense of the word “reign” in the verse above is to “king.” It’s the verb of kingship.

Therefore, you could say, “They which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall king in life by Jesus Christ.” And it gets even stronger. The Bible says He has “…made us kings and priests unto God and his Father…” (Revelation 1:6). Our title as kings isn’t futuristic but a present-moment reality. He has made us kings.

What do kings do? They rule and reign. They exercise authority and dominion in their realm. This is why you must never talk like a victim, act helpless, or see yourself as ordinary. You’re great, and you’re a king. The Bible says, “Where the word of a king is, there is power…” (Ecclesiastes 8:4). Kings don’t beg or grovel; they speak with authority. They comport themselves with dignity. Kings manifest royalty.

Every so often, say, “I know who I am; I’m great, and I’m a king. I reign and rule in life.” You’re not trying to hype yourself when you say this but merely affirming what God has done, who He’s made you. It’s your identity; He made you great and made you a king.

ASIO Director-General Testifies on Unexpected Bondi Security Breach: Key Insights Revealed

No intelligence agency had forewarning of the terror attack that unfolded at Bondi Beach, as revealed during a high-level investigation into the tragic event.

During the inquiry held on Monday, which involved first-hand testimonies about increasing anti-Semitic sentiments in the area, a royal commission began scrutinizing whether security agencies missed opportunities to prevent the mass shooting on December 14 that claimed 15 lives.

The proceedings commenced with testimony from ASIO director-general Mike Burgess, with additional insights expected from top officials of the Australian Federal Police and NSW Police.

Additionally, two members from the Jewish security organization, CSG NSW, are scheduled to provide their perspectives.

Prior to the witness statements, Richard Lancaster, the counsel assisting the royal commission, highlighted the anticipated revelations, noting the attack was considered a “surprise assault.”

“The examination of circumstances surrounding such a harrowing and deeply distressing event must be done sympathetically but unflinchingly,” he told the commission.

“There is no evidence any intelligence agency or law enforcement agency had any actual knowledge or specific information to suggest there might be an armed attack on the Hanukkah celebration.”

Among the issues under scrutiny will be security arrangements for the Chanukah by the Sea event targeted by two gunmen and what counter-terrorism agencies and police knew about the shooters.

Mr Lancaster said the Hanukkah community events were viewed by NSW Police as tier one security risks, compared with other Jewish celebrations held in September and October 2025 which were tier three, the highest threat.

Tier three events prompt counter-terrorism officers to manage policing of events, while tier one events are run by local officers.

In the lead-up to the attack, CSG warned NSW Police that a heightened atmosphere of anti-Semitism made a terror attack on the community likely, an interim report by the commission revealed in April.

Police planned to provide a high-visibility presence at the event, but they noted internally there was “no need to stay the entire duration” and ultimately only four officers and one area commander attended the event at various times.

Among 14 recommendations in the interim report was the need for tighter security arrangements at Jewish community gatherings.

Other endorsements included implementing nationally consistent firearm laws and a gun buyback scheme.

The report also recommended considering making the role of commonwealth counter-terrorism co-ordinator full-time and clarifying the role of the Australia-New Zealand counter-terrorism committee – including regular briefings to national cabinet.

The report also made five recommendations that were redacted from the publicly released version for national security reasons.

The second hearing block will look at the resourcing of counter-terrorism and the effectiveness of current powers, systems and processes of security, intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

Commissioner Virginia Bell earlier suggested much of the second block of public hearings would be behind closed doors to avoid impacting national security and the ongoing criminal prosecution of surviving shooter Naveed Akram.

And last month, Meghan promised Patrick J Adams that a jar of her jam is ‘en route’ to him after her Suits co-star joked that he hadn’t received one because he doesn’t have enough social media followers. 

Speaking on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast last month, Patrick, who played Meghan’s love interest Mike Ross in the legal drama, admitted ‘I did not get a jam’ after host Amanda Hirsch revealed she was sent flower sprinkles and spread from As Ever. 

The duchess was mentioned multiple times during the episode, including when Amanda asked Patrick if she had ever sent him a ‘handwritten note’.

‘Yeah, I’m sure I got a handwritten note,’ the actor replied, before praising Meghan’s ‘impeccable’ and ‘astonishing’ penmanship.

‘Did you get a jam?’ Patrick fired back before Amanda said she had received a care package containing As Ever’s $15 flower sprinkles and $12 spread.

He then joked, ‘I don’t have enough followers, I don’t think,’ as Amanda teased him, saying: ‘You need to get on the list.’

After a clip from the segment about the duchess was posted on Instagram, Meghan left a comment for Patrick and his wife, Troian Bellisario, letting them know that ‘jams [sic] en route for you’.

When it was first announced that Nicolas Cage’s P.I. Spidey from “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” would be the focal point of a new live-action series by MGM+ and Prime Video, fans were intrigued. This character, known for his suspicious demeanor, became a fan favorite after the success of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” Although “Spider-Noir” isn’t a direct spin-off of Cage’s animated role, it draws inspiration from the 2008 Marvel comic “Spider-Man Noir,” albeit with some creative liberties. Among all the alternate Spider-Man personas featured in the “Spider-Verse” movies, this gritty detective seemed the least likely to star in his own series.

  • Stylistically decent homage to film noir

Unfortunately, “Spider-Noir” doesn’t quite break new ground, despite its intriguing premise and the quirky charm Cage brings to the role. While Oren Uziel’s series avoids being outright bad, it falls into the trap of being unremarkably average. Even its presentation in “authentic black-and-white” fails to elevate the series, as it lacks any standout elements that make it truly compelling.

The show pays homage to the classic film noir style, both visually and tonally, but the novelty wears thin quickly. The narrative struggles with a predictable plot filled with clichéd characters and situations. The series attempts to mimic the noir genre without pushing any creative boundaries, making it distinct from typical Spider-Man adventures but not distinct enough to leave a lasting impression like “Wonder Man” did earlier this year.

The series begins on a hopeful note, introducing us to Ben Reilly (played by Nicolas Cage), a jaded detective in 1930s New York. Through a voiceover, Reilly reveals that he lost his great love, Ruby (Amanda Schull), which also extinguished his desire to be the vigilante known as The Spider. Now, five years later, Reilly has suppressed his superhero persona, opting instead for the mundane life of a private investigator. As he tackles minor cases for suspicious spouses, he realizes that in order to pay his astute secretary, Janet (Karen Rodriguez), he’ll need a more lucrative case to sustain his business.

That’s why it’s somewhat disappointing that “Spider-Noir” is as formulaic and standard as many of the iterations we’ve seen thus far — save for some deliciously amusing and trademark Nicolas Cage peculiarities. Don’t get me wrong, Oren Uziel’s show is far from a bad one. Yet the best thing I could say about it is that it’s ambitiously mediocre. Despite being shot in “authentic black-and-white” (which should’ve been the only version to watch it in if the creators were ballsy), there’s no particularly outstanding quality here that the series excels in.

The homage to classic film noir is there (both in cinematography and tone), but it gets old rather quickly because style in itself can’t save a lackluster plot in which all-too-familiar stereotypes do all-too-predictable things. The problem is that the entire vision of “Spider-Noir” is to emulate pastiche without adding anything unconventionally daring. Sure, it’s different from the regular Spidey outings we’ve seen on the big screen, but not different enough to be memorable in a way that “Wonder Man” was earlier this year, for instance.

The show starts off rather promising: Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a burned-out gumshoe in 1930s New York, tells us in a voiceover that he lost his big love, Ruby (Amanda Schull), and with her his drive to be the city’s vigilante known as The Spider. That was five years ago, and ever since, Reilly has buried his alter ego as deep as he could to be a regular PI, doing the occasional private eye gig for jealous wives and husbands. But since he plans on paying his secretary, Janet (Karen Rodriguez) — who’s better at this job than he is — one of these days, he’s aware he needs a bigger fish to fry to keep the lights on.

So when two guys turn up on the streets with superpowers (one can create flames while the other is the Sandman of this universe) linked to the local Irish mob boss, Silvermane (Brendan Gleeson given little to work with), he knows it’s an opportunity he can’t miss; one that will require him to dig up his goggles, trench coat, and the powers he purposefully stopped using to unravel how they’re connected to each other. All of this, alongside the city’s scheming mayor and a gorgeous singer (Li Jun Li) that Reilly falls head over heels the minute he hears her angelic voice.

Thus, we see little of The Spider in the first half of the series and a lot of Cage doing his best Phillip Marlowe impression, but the crime plot turns so tedious so quickly that I found it hard to pay it attention and actually care. Reilly uttering lines like “People lie, only money tells the truth” does help with evoking the kind of gritty milieu I love to sink my teeth into, but they become increasingly rare and watered down by exhausted superhero tropes we’ve seen a million times before.

The moments that work (and I wish there were more of them) are when Cage is allowed to unleash his bonkers acting chops and embrace the mad silliness he’s become a champion of, especially in the last 15 years. When he quips and acts like a total loony, the show becomes a hoot: the mixture of the hard-boiled tone with unabashed eccentricity is what “Spider-Noir” should’ve been about in the first place. And, for some brief moments of flair, the series does capture that neat blend of atmosphere and humor well, but never long enough to be consistently amusing. And when it’s not — when the stale writing relies too much on unexciting clichés with dull dialogue that would put any Gen Z-er to sleep — the episodes become a drag to get through even with their relatively breezy 40-minute(ish) runtime.

The acting and bursts of weirdness aren’t enough to mask the overflowing mediocrity

I could forgive the uninspired crime plot if the characters involved were complex, engrossing, carefully drawn human beings with distinguished personalities and compelling emotions, but “Spider-Noir” doesn’t have any of those, unfortunately. They’re all vague stereotypes played by overqualified actors who are doing their best to make them seem richer, but they can’t perform miracles. Brendan Gleeson almost looks bored portraying a villain he’d normally have a ball playing — which goes for virtually every supporting player, with the exception of Karen Rodriguez as the witty Janet and Lamorne Morris’ Robbie Robertson as Reilly’s journalist friend.

Ultimately, “Spider-Noir” lacks a soul and a much-needed passion despite competently imitating the corrupt, stark, and smoky milieu it aims for. On the surface, the show seems like a decent homage to noir, even if it’s inevitably artificial and gimmicky … but it just doesn’t feel like one. What HBO’s “The Penguin” managed to do – deliver a quasi-independent drama in a well-known comic book universe — Oren Uziel’s show cannot, no matter how hard it tries. But what nobody can take away from it is that it finally gives Nicolas Cage the kind of lead superhero role (eccentric, weird, and aptly quaint) he’s meant for. If there’s any hallmark here, it’s his committed (if slightly restrained) performance that could’ve been much better with a bolder and less derivative script altogether.

Season 1 of “Spider-Noir” premieres on MGM+ on May 25, and Prime Video on May 27.

DNA Breakthrough: USS West Virginia Teen Sailor from Pearl Harbor Identified After 82 Years

After more than 84 years, the remains of a 17-year-old sailor who perished in the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor are finally returning home for a dignified burial.

Royle Bradford Luker is set to receive full military honors during his interment in Plainview, Arkansas, on May 30. As stated in his obituary, he will be laid to rest beside his parents, including his father, a veteran of World War I.

According to his obituary from Cornwell Funeral Homes, Luker served as a Fireman Third Class in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. West Virginia. Tragically, he lost his life in the line of duty during the infamous assault on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941.

The arrangement for his burial became possible after modern forensic techniques and DNA analysis matched his remains with those of living relatives, conclusively identifying him decades after his death.

Other honors and awards listed in his obituary include the Gold Star Veteran designation, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal.

Luker was among the 106 crewmen killed when the USS West Virginia was struck during Japan’s surprise assault on Pearl Harbor.

For decades, he was listed as killed in action, while his remains were  unidentified and interred as unknowns at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, according to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. His name was also memorialized on the Courts of the Missing there.

The teen sailor was the son of George F. Luker, a WWI veteran, and Nettie Estelle David Luker, according to his obituary.

Family members, some of whom lived in Arkansas during his deployment, reportedly said Luker was remembered “with pride and love.”

According to the obituary, he is survived by two nephews, Donald Bradford Henderson and John Luker, as well as a niece, Becky Downen Lensing.

“More than 80 years later, DNA from Royle Luker and a family’s willingness to share their DNA bridged the gap between loss and knowing,” his obituary stated. “He will now be returned home and laid to rest.”

According to the U.S. Navy, the USS West Virginia was moored at Ford Island in 1941 when Japanese aircraft launched torpedoes against the battleship. The ship suffered multiple torpedo hits and eventually sank to the shallow harbor floor.
