BEAUFORT, S.C. () — In a stunning display of skill, a first-year golfer from the University of South Carolina Beaufort clinched the NCAA Division II National Championship on Wednesday in Boulder City, Nevada.
Octavio Laurent delivered an impressive performance, shooting a 63 in the final round to secure the title with a remarkable 17-under par (199), setting a new program record for a tournament.
Originally from Bordeaux, France, Laurent made history as the first athlete from the Sand Shark team to win a national championship during the university’s NCAA DII tenure.
This national victory caps off an extraordinary season for the freshman, who also received the NCAA DII Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award. Moreover, he was named Peach Belt Conference Co-Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year.
Laurent’s journey began on Monday, when he tied for 19th place with a two-under-par opening round. He surged forward in the second round, tying for second with a six-under-par. His final round was nothing short of spectacular, as he played bogey-free golf, scoring nine birdies and nine pars to finish with a nine-under-par.
Over the 54-hole tournament, Laurent had 22 birdies and 27 pars, scoring par or better on 49 of 54 holes. During his final two rounds, he played 35 of 36 holes at par or better.
Head coach Cory Cottrell said, “Octavio has been nothing but phenomenal since he stepped foot on campus in August. I could not be more thrilled for all of his hard work to pay off in such a rewarding way. To end the year by not only winning the NCAA Championship, but to do so by breaking several NCAA records is spectacular.”
Cottrell also highlighted what the win means for the program.
“This was a special week for Octavio, but also the whole USCB golf community,” Cottrell said. “There are so many people who have poured so much time and dedication into USCB golf that this success is shared with them as well.”

A Texas resident is confronting potentially severe legal consequences following accusations of secretly administering abortion medication to a woman without her consent, state law enforcement officials have confirmed.
John Ruben Demeter, 25, faces charges of conducting an unlawful abortion and causing injury to a child, as detailed in a statement from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office.
The statement alleges that Demeter covertly gave an abortion-inducing drug to a pregnant woman without her awareness or agreement, leading to the termination of her pregnancy.
The case came to light in February when the woman, suspecting she had unknowingly ingested abortion drugs, sought medical help.
According to Montgomery County Sheriff Wesley Doolittle, investigators discovered that Demeter had purchased abortion medication online and arranged for it to be delivered to his residence. Sheriff Doolittle shared these findings during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Authorities believe the defendant crushed the medication and mixed it into at least one drink that was given to the woman.
“He covertly crushed that medication and mixed it in a water bottle with a liquid I.V. packet, and this was done with this specific intent to cause the death of the child,” Doolittle said.
The pregnancy is believed to have been some 14 weeks along when the unborn child was killed, according to law enforcement.
“That baby, Presley Mae, was stillborn at the hospital, weighed about 55 grams,” the sheriff added.
In response to significant media attention over Demeter’s original arrest, officials on Wednesday stressed that the latest charges “stem from allegations involving the non-consensual administration of medication and the resulting harm alleged in the investigation.”
During the Wednesday press conference, prosecutors also said they believe the case against Demeter may be historic in that it is the first of its kind under the state’s anti-abortion statute.
Deputies were first called to the hospital over a miscarriage that had occurred under suspicious circumstances, law enforcement said.
The defendant’s girlfriend suspected the child’s father had poisoned her to end the pregnancy, according to a report by Houston-based ABC affiliate KTRK. The woman told investigators that her boyfriend wanted her to abort the baby and offered to pay for her travel so she could legally get the medical procedure performed out of state.
Investigators believe Demeter gave his then-girlfriend mifepristone, a drug illegal in Texas under the state’s abortion ban.
“These allegations describe conduct that is both deeply troubling and profoundly harmful,” prosecutor Laura Hill said. “Our responsibility is to carefully evaluate the evidence, apply the law as written, and seek justice on behalf of victims and this community.”
Initially, Demeter faced charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has been detained in the Montgomery County Jail since he was arrested on Feb. 23, two days after the miscarriage.
Now, the defendant is facing two first-degree felonies and could spend a maximum of 10 years in prison if convicted.
“This case represents allegations of deliberate deception that resulted in devastating consequences,” Montgomery County District Attorney Mike Holley said. “The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office will continue to pursue justice based on the facts, the evidence, and the laws of the State of Texas.”
Harry Maguire has been left out of England’s lineup for the upcoming World Cup, a decision made by manager Thomas Tuchel, which Maguire’s mother has criticized as ‘disgraceful.’
The official announcement of Tuchel’s 26-man roster for the tournament is set for tomorrow morning, with Maguire notably absent from the selection.

Maguire has just signed a new contract at United after turning his career around this season under manager Michael Carrick.

Earlier this year the prosecutors behind his conviction in Greece called for him to not be allowed to go to the World Cup after he was handed a 15-month suspended sentence.
Maguire was found guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery in relation to the incident six years ago following a retrial in the Greek Criminal Appeal Court on the island of Syros in March and has called the case a shambles and said he plans to appeal.
In a statement to Daily Mail Sport, Ioannis Paradissis, the lawyer for the police officers who claimed they were injured trying to arrest Maguire, said: ‘Our clients’ position is that, in light of his conviction and the fact that he now has a criminal record for violent crimes — even if he lodges an appeal on points of law only — Mr Maguire should not be permitted to continue representing higher-level sports teams, including participation in the Premier League or international competitions such as the World Cup.
‘We also understand there is a game scheduled in the United States. Since he now holds a criminal record, it is highly unlikely he would be granted a visa or ESTA. This would, in any event, prevent him from travelling to or competing there and thus be a problem for his team.’
Levi Colwill, the 23-year-old Chelsea centre back who has missed most of this season with an ACL injury, was named on Tuchel’s 55-man long list last week and is in contention to be picked on Friday.
Maguire, who has earned 66 caps for England, has represented the Three Lions at three major tournaments but was also left out of England’s squad for Euro 2024 after failing to recover from an injury.

WASHINGTON (AP) — On Thursday, the Supreme Court, in a split decision, rejected Alabama’s appeal to proceed with the execution of a convicted murderer deemed intellectually disabled by lower courts.
This decision upholds rulings that favor Joseph Clifton Smith, now 55, who has spent nearly half of his life on death row following his conviction for a 1997 murder where he fatally beat a man.
In a pivotal 2002 decision, the Supreme Court banned the execution of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Moreover, in subsequent rulings in 2014 and 2017, the justices emphasized that states should consider additional evidence in close cases due to potential inaccuracies in IQ testing.
Smith’s case centers around the interpretation of multiple IQ scores that hover slightly above 70, a number often used to identify intellectual disability. His five IQ tests resulted in scores between 72 and 78. According to his attorneys, Smith was enrolled in classes for learning disabilities and left school after the seventh grade. At the time of his crime, he was performing math at a kindergarten level, spelling at a third-grade level, and reading at a fourth-grade level.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear the case to address how courts should assess such borderline cases of intellectual disability, with arguments having been presented in December.
Rather than issue a decision, though, the high court dismissed the appeal, an unusuaI action that leaves the last lower-court ruling in place.
The three liberal justices along with Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett formed the majority to dismiss the case.
The other four conservative justices dissented, faulting the federal appeals court in Atlanta for improperly analyzing the case and complaining that their colleagues should have ordered the appeals court to reexamine Smith’s case.

In a broad-ranging interview, she’s also defended past comments on Asian migration.
Pauline Hanson, the leader of One Nation, has acknowledged that she discusses policy matters with billionaire donor Gina Rinehart but maintains that the mining mogul does not sway her party’s policy decisions.
During an extensive interview with SBS News, Hanson expressed her confidence in appealing to multicultural voters in Western Sydney. She elaborated on the conditions for having a Muslim candidate for One Nation and clarified whether her proposed ban on head coverings would include those that do not conceal the face.
Hanson also took steps to separate herself from One Nation supporters with neo-Nazi beliefs, stating that she has no association with them.
‘No-one changes my vision’: Hanson on Rinehart
In recent news, Hanson revealed she had been gifted a new aircraft, a Cirrus G7, from one of Rinehart’s companies.
Rinehart, a prominent supporter of One Nation, used an Anzac Day speech to advocate for increased screening of immigrants before they arrive and to welcome immigrants who are peace-loving and contribute to society.
When asked directly by SBS News whether Rinehart influences One Nation policy, Hanson responded “no”.
Hanson said she had not been influenced by Rinehart on immigration matters.
“Just because we’ve got a plane doesn’t mean to say my tune has changed as far as migration,” Hanson said.
“I’ve been speaking about this for the last 30 years. I’m on the record of talking about this. I’ve been consistent with my policies, what I stand for.”
But she said Rinehart did raise matters of policy with her, in line with other organisations and groups who meet with her in parliament.
“She (Rinehart) puts forward some policies like everyone else. I had the gas industry here today as well. I’ve had … a lawyer about family law. So, I’m talking to all people, which I have done for years, about policy.
“Why shouldn’t she talk to me about policy? No one changes my vision, what I have for Australia, what I want to do. I’m quite happy to listen to anyone. Why wouldn’t I listen to Gina Rinehart? She’s one of the highest — if not the highest — taxpayers in this nation, and what she does for this country as well.”
Hanson pointed to Rinehart’s financial backing for war veterans, the Olympic swim team, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the agricultural sector.
“I’m sick of people saying, you know, who criticise her for the wealth, but she’s one of the people in this country that does give back to the community, unlike some of the others in the mining industry.”
Hanson rejected suggestions the donated plane — valued at around $1 million — conflicts with her image as “the voice of the Australian battlers”, arguing the major parties have enormous combined donations.
She said the plane will allow her to visit regional and rural Australians who “never see a politician out there”, and that the travel comes at “no cost” to the taxpayer because she pays for the plane fuel herself.
Coalition losing votes to One Nation
One Nation’s polling surge has put the Liberal and National parties under pressure, with the party polling between 24 and 27 per cent of the national primary vote.
Amid its rising popularity, Hanson has prised off a string of Opposition recruits to join her party — including former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce. This month, One Nation’s first federal lower house MP was elected in Farrer, in a long-held Liberal seat.
In South Australia, former Liberal senator Cory Bernardi leads the party, while One Nation secured four lower house seats and three in the upper house in this year’s state election.
Former Liberal senator Hollie Hughes and one-time Liberal Party vice president Tina McQueen have also joined the orange wave.

Opposition leader Angus Taylor says talk of a future Coalition being broadened to include One Nation alongside the Liberals and Nationals is “nonsense”.
“I have put out an olive branch to the Coalition to work with us to form that coalition together. All I’ve got is pushback,” Hanson said.
Hanson’s ambition is for One Nation to win enough seats to govern — and she’s now looking at a pathway through outer-suburban seats held by the major parties, and independents.
Hanson has twice used the Senate to protest against the burqa — a full face and body covering traditionally worn in Afghanistan — by wearing the garment in the chamber, in a move that was condemned by political opponents and rights and activist groups as discriminatory.
Hanson was censured and suspended from the Senate for a week over the 2025 stunt. Muslim communities said they feared a potential rise in hate crimes and attacks against women and girls wearing headscarves as a result of Hanson’s actions.

Hanson has no regrets over her actions.
“The public are on side with me here,” she said, pointing to some Muslim-majority countries banning partial or full face veils, while questioning how people can get a job with such full coverage.
But she said her concerns did not extend to all forms of head covering, like the hijab, which covers the hair and neck but shows the face.
“I’ve got no problem with that, but the Australian people do not want the full face covering.”
While she is open to selecting Muslim candidates to run for the party, and has done so in the past, that would come with conditions.
“You have a difference. There is someone who may have been born and they’re a Muslim. Are they a practising Muslim that complies with Sharia law?”
Emma Eros, a Muslim candidate who ran for One Nation in the 2019 NSW state election, described Hanson’s “no good Muslims” comments as “appalling” in February, saying ordinary mums and dads should not be tarnished as “terrorists”.
‘I haven’t been to the western suburbs for a long time’
Hanson’s major policy platform is ending what she describes as “mass migration”. She wants to dramatically reduce migration to a visa cap of 130,000 people a year and ban migrants from countries “known to foster extremist ideologies”.
Australia’s net overseas migration — the number of migrants arriving minus those departing — peaked at 555,800 in 2022-23.
But it has fallen in the years since, coming in at 305,570 in the year to June 2025, according to the latest data.
“There’s one culture, the Australian culture. And I do not believe in bringing in different cultures, like Islamic beliefs or — not their beliefs, but their ideology is incompatible with the Australian culture and way of life,” she said.
Australian Muslim leaders and organisations like the Australian National Imams Council have rejected such statements, saying the Muslim community is an integral part of society and was committed to social cohesion, the safety and security of all Australians and the development of the country.
While she maintains One Nation is finding support in western Sydney suburbs like Fairfield and Blacktown, Hanson has also acknowledged she has not been campaigning on the ground in those areas.
“I haven’t been into the western suburbs for a long time — even when I went to Fairfield was years ago, I got a great response from people there, and from the Lebanese Maronites, and different ones that I’ve spoken to. I’ve got a lot of support from these people, from these migrants, and these people are saying that they don’t like the country that it’s becoming.”
No apologies for Asian migration comments
In 1996, when Pauline Hanson delivered her maiden speech in the House of Representatives, it was Asian immigration in her sights, warning: “I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians.”
Today, Hanson says she would not apologise for the comments, saying the “data” she had at the time showed the Australian population would become “54 per cent Asian” with continued immigration trends at the time.
“So we’ll find out next year, what is the [Asian] population,” she said, referring to the upcoming Census, which will take place in August.
Approximately 17.4 per cent of Australia’s population identified as having Asian ancestry in the last Census, taken in 2021.
“I don’t apologise for that [comment], because I’m a proud Australian, and we need to have immigration that comes in that people assimilate to become Australian.”
But the senator now maintains she’s got increasing support from Asian communities.
“My job as a member of parliament is to have vision for the future and determine, what sort of country do we want? Why do you think a lot of these migrants have come here and support me? Because they say: ‘Pauline, you’re right. We came in the right way. We actually went through all [these] checks and balances. We don’t want this country to become like the place that we left.’
“You might be absolutely shocked [at] the number of Asian migrants that have come here that fully support me. A lot of my members and candidates and different ones have Asian partners, or they have stood, who are Asians that stand for me.”
When people label her as “racist” in the parliament, Hanson describes that as “pulling the race card”.

When questioned about a section of her support base who hold neo-Nazi views, Hanson replied: “That’s got nothing to do with me, and that’s got nothing to do with One Nation.
“Don’t try and make out that they’re part of One Nation or part of our team, or anything like that. It’s got nothing to do with it. So don’t head down that path with me. I’m sick and tired of the media throwing this at me all the time.”
But she conceded that while there may be supporters of One Nation who identify as neo-Nazis, she has no control over her base.
“They’re supporters. And before One Nation came on, where were they, who did they support? Did you follow that up?
“I don’t know who is out there supporting me. I’ve got people from all different cultural background, walks of life, ages, you name it, supporting One Nation because they support my policies, what I stand for. So don’t have a go at me as if it’s going to belittle or denigrate my party, what I stand for, because I may have this fringe out there who support us.
“They’re fringe. They’re out here. They’re going to support someone.”
