Revitalize Your Waistline: 5 Standing Exercises That Outperform Traditional Ab Workouts for Seniors Over 60

0

Tackle those “love handles” with these powerful standing exercises designed to target stubborn areas.

As we age, our bodies naturally undergo transformations influenced by muscle loss, shifts in hormone levels, and decreased physical activity. These changes often lead to extra fat accumulating around the midsection. This gradual weight increase, often referred to as “weight creep,” can add up to a pound each year if left unchecked.

While these changes can be exasperating, they can be managed with some strategic lifestyle adjustments. We consulted with Terry Tateossian, the Founder and Certified Lifestyle Medicine Coach, Trainer, and Nutritionist for Women 40+ at THOR – The House of Rose. She suggests five standing exercises that can more effectively trim the waistline after 60 than traditional abdominal workouts. Tateossian brings a wealth of advanced training in women’s health and age-related weight management.

“Even if you’re staying active, hormonal changes are a major factor in why we gain weight around the belly after 60,” Tateossian explains. “As estrogen and testosterone levels drop, our energy and motivation can wane. Additionally, if we don’t focus on resistance training, our bodies naturally begin to lose muscle mass,” she adds.

“Some of the most common reasons we develop extra weight around the midsection after 60, despite being active, is hormonal shifts as we get older. Estrogen declines, testosterone decreases and we start to have less drive and motivation. In addition, when we don’t do resistance training as our prioritized training method, our bodies start to naturally lose muscle mass,” Tateossian shares.

After 60, the goal of many of Tateossian’s clients isn’t to sculpt aesthetically pleasing abs, but rather to build a strong, stable core that promotes solid posture, daily movement, and metabolic wellness.”Traditional ab exercises may not necessarily address those priorities,” she says. “However, I will say that ab exercises in general do not provide ‘the six pack’ most people desire. It is actually nutrition that creates the ‘six pack’ and having low body fat overall.”

Below are five standing moves that can help tighten and firm your waistline quicker than standard ab workouts.

Standing Oblique Crunches

  1. Begin standing tall with your feet shoulder-width apart and hands behind your head, elbows wide.
  2. Activate your core and lift your left knee toward your left elbow as you crunch your torso to the side, keeping your chest tall.
  3. Use control to lower.
  4. Lift your right knee toward your right elbow as you crunch your torso to the side.
  5. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 20 total reps, keeping the tempo slow and controlled with 60 seconds of rest in between sets.

Standing March With Core Engagement

“The key here is to brace the core—so imagine you are sneezing. That contraction that happens in the belly, keep that the entire set but continue breathing,” Tateossian says.

  1. Start by standing tall with your feet hip-width apart and arms at your sides.
  2. Lift your left knee up to hip height while swinging your right arm forward and left arm back. Keep your core engaged.
  3. Lower your foot and repeat with your right knee, swinging your left arm forward and right arm back.
  4. Maintain solid posture and steady breathing throughout.
  5. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 20 total reps, keeping the tempo slow and controlled with 60 seconds of rest in between sets.

Standing Paloff Press

  1. Stand tall, perpendicular to an anchor point, with your feet hip-width apart and a soft bend in your knees.
  2. Hold a resistance band at chest level.
  3. Breathe out as you extend your arms ahead of you, resisting rotation.
  4. Return your arms back to the starting position.
  5. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 10 to 12 reps on each side, keeping the tempo slow and controlled with 60 seconds of rest in between sets.

Standing Side Leg Lifts

“This move is great for the hips as well, as it builds hip and core connection. Lift one leg to the side, you can keep the knee bent or straight. [Your] torso stays stable,” Tateossian says.

  1. Begin by standing tall with your feet hip-width apart and hands placed on your hips or holding onto a sturdy chair or wall for extra support.
  2. Activate your core as you shift your weight onto your left leg.
  3. Keep your right leg straight and toes pointed forward as you lift it out to the side as high as you’re comfortably able to.
  4. Hold at the top for a moment before lowering.
  5. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 20 reps in total, keeping the tempo slow and controlled with 60 seconds of rest in between sets.

Standing Cross-Body Punches

  1. Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and knees slightly bent.
  2. Bring your fists up to your face and tuck your elbows.
  3. Extend your left arm across your body in a punching motion, rotating through your torso.
  4. Return to the center.
  5. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Perform 3 to 4 sets of 20 reps in total, keeping the tempo slow and controlled with 60 seconds of rest in between sets.

Breaking: Sydney Sweeney’s Euphoria Season 3 Plot Twist Leaves Fans in Shock and Awe

0

Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Euphoria” Season 3, Episode 2 — “America My Dream”

The portrayal of women in “Euphoria” has often sparked debate, and Sam Levinson’s provocative HBO drama reaches new extremes with Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie Howard, in its third season. As the series progresses, Cassie’s narrative has become a focal point, raising questions about the show’s overarching themes and its depiction of female characters.

When “Euphoria” debuted in the summer of 2019, it introduced viewers to a gritty high school world through the eyes of Rue Bennett, a recovering drug addict played by Zendaya—whose performance has earned her two Emmy Awards. Alongside Rue, the series explores the lives of her friends, including Cassie, her by-the-book sister Lexi (Maude Apatow), Cassie’s steadfast best friend Maddy Perez (Alexa Demie), the confident and body-positive Kat Hernandez (Barbie Ferreira), and Maddy’s tumultuous partner Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi). Rue also becomes captivated by Jules Vaughn (Hunter Schafer), a transgender student navigating her gender and sexual identity in often perilous circumstances.

While “Euphoria” has always leaned heavily on shock value, Season 2 escalated this tendency, and Season 3 intensifies it further. The show employs a five-year time leap, aging its characters into their twenties, and one need only look at Cassie’s storyline to grasp this shift. Levinson often shies away from deeply analyzing Cassie, yet her narrative is predominantly defined by how she is perceived by men. This focus on Cassie underscores broader issues within “Euphoria,” sparking significant discussion.

So, what exactly is Cassie Howard’s storyline in Season 3, and why has it stirred such controversy? In the previous season, Cassie engaged in a clandestine relationship with Nate, which was kept secret due to his ties with her best friend, Maddy. When Maddy uncovered the truth, chaos ensued. Fast forward five years, and Cassie and Nate are cohabitating in a lavish, albeit kitschy, mansion, planning a wedding. However, underlying tensions surface when Nate hesitates to spend $50,000 on floral arrangements, prompting Cassie to take control of her destiny by embarking on a new venture as an erotic influencer.

Even by Euphoria’s standards, Cassie’s Season 3 plotline is humiliating

Wait, so what is Cassie Howard’s storyline in Season 3 of “Euphoria,” and why is everyone so mad about it? Here’s the deal. You may remember that, in Season 2, Cassie and Nate started a secret relationship — secret because of Nate’s connection to Maddy, Cassie’s very best friend — and when Maddy did find out, the situation imploded. Still, with this five-year time jump, we learn that Cassie and Nate live together in the tackiest possible mansion and are getting married soon, but there’s trouble in paradise. Despite the trappings of wealth, Nate balks at spending $50,000 on floral arrangements for their wedding, and frustrated by this stand, Cassie decides to take matters into her own hands … and start working as an erotic influencer.

To say this plotline is demeaning is an understatement, and that’s not meant to impugn successful, happy erotic influencers and OnlyFans content creators. It is meant to impugn Sam Levinson, who uses this opportunity to truss the buxom Sydney Sweeney up like a Thanksgiving turkey and put her into increasingly embarrassing costumes and set-ups. There’s a shot where she’s fully nude with ice cream dripping down her arm. There’s a shot where she’s fully nude holding a strategically placed baseball mitt. There’s a scene where she’s dressed as a dog, complete with a leash … and she’s wearing Sweeney’s real-life lingerie line to boot. There’s also a full scene where she’s not fully nude but dressed like a baby, complete with a diaper and pacifier, spreading her legs for the camera operated by her beleaguered housekeeper Juana (Minerva García). We’re supposed to, presumably, find this empowering for Cassie, but the way Levinson paints it is anything but.

Fans are commenting on Sydney Sweeney’s Euphoria storyline … and they agree on one thing

That whole “sexy baby” situation got a lot of play on social media platforms like X (formerly known as Twitter), even during the week between the Season 3 premiere “Ándale” aired and the second episode “America My Dream” debuted. On the platform, user @aribudincita wrote, “Man, Cassie from ‘Euphoria’s’ pic dressed like a baby is disgusting.” Another, @jiya1402, made it pretty personal. “I was never too fond of [Sydney Sweeney] to begin with but this just makes her the worst person in the world,” they wrote alongside pictures of her in the dog and baby costumes. “Like…. I can’t stand to look at her.” @Davebarrerita wondered how Sweeney and Jacob Elordi — who appears in a scene in the Season 3 premiere where Cassie’s in that now-infamous dog get-up — could even perform under these circumstances. “This is so embarassing even for [Jacob],” they mused. “But, how [can] Sydney Sweeney agree to do something like this? It’s like a humillation ritual.”

Other people pointed to creator Sam Levinson as “the problem,” so to speak. “Sam Levinson needs to be investigated! How the hell did we go from that purple glitter aesthetic to fart f*tish, doggy f*tish and the cartel???” user @ar1esprincesa wondered. Even before the season started, people were clocking Levinson, like @SailorSammy93: “Just saw a pic of Cassie in [‘Euphoria’ Season 3] … I need someone to go through Sam Levinson’s hard drive.”

Frankly, anyone who’s familiar with “Euphoria” should be unsurprised that Levinson is pushing things this far, particularly where Cassie is concerned. It’s not like he took it any easier on Cassie — or Sweeney, for that matter — during the show’s first two blockbuster seasons.

Let’s be honest: Euphoria has never been kind to Cassie Howard

The first season of “Euphoria,” to Sam Levinson’s credit, does something interesting in that each episode focuses on a different main character, with Zendaya’s Rue narrating details about their life that give some context as to who they are as teenagers. As far as Cassie is concerned, we learn about her early childhood with her well-meaning but overbearing mother Suze Howard (always-welcome utility player Alanna Ubach) and her largely absent dad Gus (Nick Blood), as well as her prowess as a young ice-skater. Gus leaving the family and dealing with substance abuse issues made life scary and difficult for Cassie, who was very attached to her father; essentially, this entire set-up is designed for the audience to understand that Cassie finds self-worth in the eyes of men due to a damaged relationship with her dad.

This manifests as early as Season 1, where we see Cassie dating a guy named Chris McKay (Algee Smith), who seems nice enough but also pressures her into sending him nude photos — and, we learn, is the father of an unborn child. (Cassie terminates the pregnancy.) In Season 2, we get that aforementioned storyline between Nate and Cassie as they sneak around behind Maddy’s back … and after Maddy finds out about their secret relationship, she goes full scorched-earth as an increasingly desperate Cassie, usually hysterically screaming and crying, tries to hold onto Nate through whatever means necessary. (Remember her drunkenly vomiting in the hot tub halfway through the season after wearing a teeny-tiny bathing suit to pull Nate’s attention away from Maddy?!) There were some flickers of more interesting stories throughout Cassie’s narrative, but by this point, she’s fallen victim to Levinson’s worst impulses when it comes to his female characters.

Beyond that, Sam Levinson’s view of women in Season 3 of Euphoria is bleak

While Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie feels like the most egregious example of Sam Levinson’s often abhorrent approach to his female characters, she’s certainly not alone. Before we even get to the Season 3 of it all, it feels very important to note that you won’t see Barbie Ferreira’s name mentioned in conjunction with that season. Why? Ferreira left “Euphoria” after Season 2, during which her character Kat was sidelined and, frankly, disrespected with lackluster storylines. Rumors have swirled for years that Levinson and Ferreira feuded, she recently opened up on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast about why she left. As she told host Amanda Hirsch, her character arc “just wasn’t going anywhere” and she wanted a chance to challenge herself as a performer. “”I don’t need to be on the biggest TV show on earth if I’m not, like, acting,” she said.

Whether or not there was ever any actual bad blood between Levinson and Ferreira is one thing, but the way that Levinson treats his female characters in Season 3 of “Euphoria” feels … rough. Aside from Lexi, who always manages to come out of this show miraculously unscathed, the women of “Euphoria” aren’t ever having a particularly good time. Maddy’s career, we learn in “America My Dream,” is floundering — and her only salvation is to manage erotic influencers. (More on that shortly.) Rue is a drug mule, as is her friend Faye (former adult performer Chloe Cherry, who deserves better than anything this show gives her). Levinson makes a habit out of disrespecting women on “Euphoria,” and Cassie happens to be the worst instance of this impulse.

Cassie’s storyline on Season 3 of Euphoria points to a larger structural issue

It might sound dramatic to say that Cassie’s storyline on “Euphoria” just clarifies that the show’s foundation isn’t sound, but it’s not hyperbole; it’s just the truth. The pivot that Cassie makes during “America My Dream” is that she decides she wants to create adult content for OnlyFans, the constantly-growing platform where adult content creators control their own businesses. Again, this is not meant to disrespect the many creators on that platform; what we’re trying to say here is that making Cassie into an OnlyFans model feels like the laziest possible choice for this character and for Sam Levinson as a writer and showrunner.

Point in fact, it feels like a joke that any average “Euphoria” viewer could have offhandedly made during the long wait between Seasons 2 and 3 that Cassie becomes an OnlyFans model … and even worse, one who struggles to even break through on the platform. This doesn’t speak to any growth or evolution for Cassie whatsoever — it’s just more of the same for her character, whose emotional journey is non-existent and hasn’t really been a part of the show since Season 1. “Euphoria” tries to add an ostensibly empowering aspect to Cassie’s career goals, but that, too, falls flat.

Euphoria tries to ’empower’ Cassie with one development, but it’s empty

After their blow-up over Nate at the end of Season 2 of “Euphoria,” it felt like Maddy and Cassie’s long friendship was probably over — but in “America My Dream,” Cassie reaches out to Maddy as the latter is floundering in her job as the assistant to a powerful publicist. Maddy bites and, after the two meet at a posh Hollywood hotel and drink multiple Aperol Spritzes by the pool, Maddy tells Cassie that she’s not sure her approach to her content is working and agrees to manage her.

So what’s the problem here? Sam Levinson actually spells it out for us, both in the dialogue and the voiceover. As we see several of Cassie’s photoshoot attempts, Nue narrates, “It was a shame she was with Nate. Cassie was the kind of girl Maddy dreamed of signing. Beautiful, but directionless. So desperate for attention she’s willing to humiliate herself. Those are the kind of girls you can really mine.” Later, by the pool, Maddy tells Cassie, “Yeah, the doggie video? It’s fun and it’s campy, but it’s not sexy and it’s not timeless. It just feels desperate. It feels like you’re trying way too hard.” Levinson’s outright disdain for Cassie, expressed through these very blunt lines, erases any attempt at empowerment by having another young woman manage her career — and throughout the run of “Euphoria,” Levinson’s love of exploitation has been an issue off-camera as well.

Historically, Sam Levinson has exploited nude female bodies for shock value instead of narrative purpose

During Season 2 of “Euphoria,” there were two concrete examples of Sam Levinson asking actresses to do nude scenes that they found to be totally unnecessary to the actual narrative. Speaking to Vanity Fair, “Friday Night Lights” alum Minka Kelly, who appeared in the second season of the HBO series as a wealthy woman named Samantha who hires Maddy as a babysitter and then befriends her, said she had to ask Levinson to dial back a nude scene.

“[Levinson] thought it would be more interesting if my dress fell to the ground,” Kelly said, noting that she felt uncomfortable. “That was my first day as a guest on this new show, and I just didn’t feel comfortable standing there naked.” Kelly challenged Levinson and won. “I said, ‘I’d love to do this scene, but I think we can keep my dress on,’” she said. “He was like, ‘Okay!’ He didn’t even hesitate. And he shot a beautiful scene and got exactly what he wanted.”

Sydney Sweeney wasn’t immune to this either. Before Season 2 premiered, she told The Independent that she also asked Levinson to tone down the nude scenes. As she remembered, “there are moments where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here.’ He was like, ‘OK, we don’t need it’. I’ve never felt like Sam has pushed it on me or was trying to get a nude scene into an HBO show. When I didn’t want to do it, he didn’t make me.”

It’s good that Levinson backed down, but the fact that the actresses had to say something is … not good. Plus, we’ve seen his worst instincts run amok — on “The Idol.”

Because of Sam Levinson’s worst instincts, Euphoria Season 3 has turned into The Idol

Between seasons of “Euphoria,” Sam Levinson turned his attention to “The Idol,” a one-season terror about a pop star played by Lily-Rose Depp (who’s quite good with the meager material she’s given) who falls in love with a controlling man played by actual pop star The Weeknd (who is terrible). After ending suddenly and leaving viewers baffled, it can be viewed as a cultural artifact that shows us exactly how far Levinson will push boundaries if left to his own devices; instead of a treatise about how pop stars are treated and exploited in society, Levinson simply exploited a fictional pop star to prove some sort of sick and ultimately empty point.

There’s also the issue of how “The Idol” treats its own fictional intimacy coordinator … something that points to a larger issue with how Levinson views these professionals. While “Euphoria” has utilized an intimacy coordinator throughout all of its seasons per HBO’s in-house rules — and Amanda Peek is listed as the intimacy coordinator for Season 3 on the show’s IMDb page — it’s worth looking at “The Idol” and its incredibly bleak view of this extremely important role on set. (Remember the scene where they lock an intimacy coordinator in a bathroom to stop him from doing his job?!) It’s troubling that we know exactly what Levinson thinks of these coordinators, who only exist on set to keep actors feeling safe during vulnerable scenes, and it’s disturbing that on a show that asks so much of its actors, like “Euphoria” — and it’s another factor that speaks to the show’s larger issues.

Where can season 3 of Euphoria go from here for Cassie Howard and Sydney Sweeney?

So what can we expect to see from Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie Howard throughout Season 3 of “Euphoria?” Well, she’ll presumably marry Nate and continue pursuing a career as an erotic influencer, so the real question is how much humiliation Sam Levinson will put the actress and character through when all is said and done.

Something that, honestly, stinks about this whole thing is that Sweeney is put into a position where she has to defend Levinson’s apparent worst impulses. While speaking to W Magazine in 2025, Sweeney said she feels totally comfortable with this sort of material. “I don’t get nervous,” Sweeney said of nude scenes. “I think that the female body is a very powerful thing. And I’m telling my character’s story, so I owe it to them to tell it well and to do what needs to be done.”

This is a great sentiment, but it does not, in any way, match up with Cassie’s journey on “Euphoria.” Cassie’s body isn’t “powerful” in this season, but something to be gawked at and objectified for a very flimsy narrative purpose. What Sweeney “owes” to Cassie boils down to gratuitous and sometimes embarrassing scenes, and if this is the story she’s telling, the rest of Season 3 of “Euphoria” could be rough for Sweeney and Cassie. We’ll have to find out; “Euphoria” airs new episodes at 9 p.m. on HBO and HBO Max every Sunday.

Trump Discusses JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s Dynamic Relationship During Mar-a-Lago Encounters

0

In a recent phone interview with The Five on Thursday evening, former President Donald Trump shared insights into his acquaintance with the late John F. Kennedy Jr., claiming he knew him “very well.” Trump also touched on the intricate dynamics of Kennedy’s relationship with his wife, Carolyn Bessette, describing it as sexually charged.

During the discussion, Fox News Channel host Dana Perino brought up the popular FX series, Love Story, which chronicles the passionate romance between Kennedy and Bessette. She inquired whether Trump felt nostalgic about the 1990s era.

Perino also took the opportunity to ask if Trump had any personal connections with the younger Kennedy.

In response, Trump expressed a preference for the 1980s and elaborated on his familiarity with the son of President John F. Kennedy. He divulged details about Kennedy Jr.’s career, his political aspirations, and the sometimes tumultuous nature of his relationship with Bessette.

“I knew them both pretty well; I knew him much better,” Trump revealed. “They would visit Mar-a-Lago together, and they had a very interesting relationship.”

‘They would bicker, I want to be nice, they would bicker together. In other words, have little fights and then they’d make up and start kissing wildly,’ he described.

Trump said it was one of ‘those’ relationships.

‘And you never know how those relationships are going to turn out,’ the President continued. ‘Frankly, I’ve seen them go on for years and I’ve seen them go on for about two days before they broke up.’

Trump also recalled that Kennedy ‘liked me, believe it or not.’

‘He actually put me on the cover of his magazine, George,’ the President said.

The President’s cover shot was on the February/March 2000 issue of George, which was entitled ‘The Trumpster’ and focused on the future commander-in-chief’s political ambitions – ambitions that didn’t come to full fruition for another 16 years.

It was published shortly after the July 16, 1999, plane crash death of Kennedy and Bessette.

‘It was a tragic thing,’ Trump recalled.

The 79-year-old President also claimed that Kennedy planned to sell off George and run for higher office.

‘Look, he was going to sell that magazine, which was a little bit of an anchor, it didn’t work out too well. It was OK,’ Trump said.

‘He was a handsome guy. You don’t get better looking. And he was going to run for politics. He was going to run for the Senate, he told me, and nobody would have beaten him, and he probably would have ended up being president, because he had a lot of good things. He was sort of a great guy,’ Trump said.

A Senate seat had opened up in New York for the 2000 cycle.

The show, Love Story, depicts Kennedy talking to a political consultant about potentially running for the seat.

The winner ended up being Trump’s 2016 Democratic presidential rival, former First Lady Hillary Clinton.

‘I think he would have gone on to be president,’ Trump said of Kennedy.

Trump has attracted the ire of many in the Kennedy family, due to his takeover of the Kennedy Center and destruction of the Jaqueline Kennedy, which went the way of the East Wing last fall.

He also plans to have the new Air Force Ones repainted – a departure from Jackie Kennedy’s classic design.

At the same time, he has a Kennedy in his Cabinet, with JFK Jr.’s cousin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., serving as his Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Australia’s $20,000 Relationship Tax: The Hidden Cost of Staying Single

0

In brief:

  • Being single in Australia is an expensive prospect.
  • The single life comes with a “premium”, leaving those not in a relationship thousands of dollars worse off.

In regional Queensland, Stacey Gray, a single mother, balances two jobs to provide for her nine-year-old son and to make ends meet.

“Without holding down two jobs, living would be unaffordable,” she shared with SBS News.

“Decisions between necessities and desires are constant… If it’s a choice between a new toy or tutoring, tutoring wins every time, doesn’t it?”

“It’s becoming increasingly challenging to do the things we could easily manage just a few years ago.”

At 46, Stacey resides in a family-owned home in Port Douglas, mortgage-free, yet she finds herself working extra hours. To support her son, she relies on government-subsidized before and after-school care services.

The recent fuel price hike has also impacted her.

“With [interest] rates and now the fuel as well, and just the cost of groceries. It all adds up very quickly,” she said.

“It just seems to be one thing after another at the moment.”

The $19,260 gap

Being single comes with a “premium” in Australia, leaving those not in a relationship thousands of dollars worse off, financial experts say.

The average Australian with a partner has savings of $50,192, whereas a single person has $30,932 — a gap of $19,260, according to Finder, a financial comparison site.

This is related to what experts describe as a type of tax, only on single people.

“When we talk about singles tax, we’re really focused on those that are both unpartnered and living alone,” Sarah Sinclair, an associate professor in economics at RMIT University, told SBS News.

“[Single tax] is a direct cost that they experience that others don’t.

“They’re missing out on economies of scale, income pooling, and also that inter-household risk sharing.”

Finder’s Singles Tax Report 2026 shows that while single people are saving $651 monthly on average, someone who is in a relationship is saving $1,086.

On average, an individual can sustain themselves off their savings for 15.9 weeks, whereas someone in a relationship can do so for 17.4 weeks.

‘Premium for living alone’

“The additional costs of living that they experience, a lot of that is felt through things such as housing costs, utilities, and insurance,” Sinclair said.

“These are all very much costs that are fixed at the household level. So when multiple people live in the house, those costs are shared … There is essentially a premium for living alone just purely in those direct costs.”

Singles might spend less than couples, but the cost per person is lower.

For example, Finder’s report shows that an average single person spends $165 per week on groceries, compared to $237 for those with a partner.

It found rent, groceries, and utilities ranked were the most challenging expenses for married and single Australians.

With the cost-of-living crisis that many Australians are grappling with, conditions might even worsen for those living alone.

“When you’re experiencing higher costs for just day-to-day living, all of those costs get amplified,” Sinclair said.

“When those prices go up, obviously, that is borne solely by one person on one income, as opposed to being able to share it across multiple incomes.”

Paying loan ‘on their own’

The Finder report shows that singles are also at a disadvantage when buying a home.

Across 4,493 suburbs where properties were sold in the 12 months of 2025, only 31 per cent were affordable without putting new owners into mortgage stress — for couples with two sources of income, that stress is lower.

In 2025, 56 per cent of first-time home buyers purchased with a partner, 39 per cent bought alone, and five per cent bought with a family member or a friend.

The population of single first-home buyers has also dropped by six per cent between 2021 and 2025.

“Getting a foot on the property ladder is another area where the ‘singles tax’ is clearly on display,” said Rebecca Pike, money expert at Finder and report co-author.

“Unlike couples, single buyers must save the same deposit without the benefit of dual earnings, while also proving they can service a loan on their own … This significantly limits borrowing power and reduces the number of properties within reach.”

This might also have a long-term impact on their financial situation in the long term.

Sinclair said that lower savings mean that people can accumulate fewer assets over their lifetime.

“They’re relying more solely on their own income, and then have less access to things like informal care networks as they age, and this can increase their vulnerability later in life,” she said.

“I think we could think about how the system is designed. For example, do we need more housing that is better suited to singles?

“There are a number of things that you can think about … It’s more, how can we manage the cost structures so that you’re reducing those additional burdens on single households.”

The ‘happiness gap’

The report indicates that, besides financial challenges, there is also a “happiness gap” between singles and those in relationships.

It shows 61 per cent of those not in a relationship reported feeling happy in March, compared to 82 per cent of those with a partner.

Pike said “while happiness is shaped by many factors, financial security and stability can play an important role”.

According to the report, the gap is bigger at certain times of the year, such as Christmas, with 70 per cent of singles reporting feeling happy, compared to 86 per cent of those in a couple, in December 2025.

“Holidays especially are a time associated with social connection and positive memories, which can bring on heavy feelings for those without a partner,” Pike said.

“Of course, happiness isn’t and shouldn’t be solely determined by relationship status.”

Controversial Wedding Dress of Aussie Plus-Size Model Sparks Heated Debate Among Fans

0

A plus-size model has sparked a mix of reactions among her followers after revealing the dress she wore to her wedding welcome party. The gown, which she showcased on social media, has become a topic of debate.

Riley Hemson recently tied the knot with her fiancé Vita Tomoana, celebrating their union over the weekend. The day before the main event, she took to Instagram to post videos of the striking outfit she chose for the occasion.

The dress, noted for its intricate woven corset and flowing mermaid silhouette, has drawn both admiration and criticism. While many praised its unique design, others found it less flattering. The gown’s standout feature was its elegant Basque waistline, accompanied by a lengthy, frilled skirt.

One comment online encapsulated the mixed reactions: “I think she is beautiful, but yikes she’s been planning the wedding so long and that’s the dress?” This reflects the divided opinions, with some questioning the choice despite the model’s evident confidence and style.

‘I think she is beautiful, but yikes she’s been planning the wedding so long and that’s the dress?’ one person wrote online.

‘It’s unflattering,’ another added, while someone else said: ‘Agreed! She’s very pretty. The dress is just a mess!’

‘That is so odd. It looks like six dresses in one, with a basket as the corset,’ one user commented.

However, there were some who pointed out the woven detailing on the corset may be a nod to the Māori culture of her partner Vita.

‘I think the corset part looks similar to traditional Māori flax weaving (harakeke). If Vita is Māori this could be paying homage to his culture,’ someone noted.

‘Or many other Pasifika cultures. I know the dress/her style isn’t everyone’s taste but it’s totally on brand for her and I think she looks lovely.’

‘Uhhhh it’s a cultural thing, no?’ added another.

‘Riley I love how your dress bodice looks like harakeke a nod to your new Māori last name,’ a third echoed.

Many other fans sang their praises of the dress.

‘Incredible,’ ‘Pretty,’ and ‘Beautiful,’ were just some of the many supportive words Riley received.

Apple Poised to Unveil Its First Foldable Smartphone This Year

0

After years of speculation, the chances are higher than ever that Apple will launch a foldable smartphone this year, marking a significant revamp of its iPhone lineup come September.

According to 9News.com.au, they have acquired “dummy” prototypes of the upcoming iPhones. These models are created by manufacturers in China, based on leaked details from Apple’s supply chain.

The purpose of these “dummy” models is to enable third-party accessory makers to develop cases and other add-ons in anticipation of the new iPhone’s official release.

In the competitive smartphone market, Apple’s primary rival, Samsung, introduced its foldable device, the Samsung Galaxy Fold, nearly seven years ago. Since then, whispers of Apple entering the foldable market have been a constant.

Previously, these rumors lacked concrete evidence, but the appearance of a foldable iPhone mock-up now adds weight to the speculation.

These mock-up models have reliably showcased the iPhone ahead of its release for many years now, meaning there’s a strong reliability to this evidence.

Perhaps just as interesting, though not as headline-grabbing, is the lack of a standard iPhone 18 model. Last September, Apple released the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, along with the iPhone Air.

This year, it appears Apple will switch its September launch event to the premium range of iPhones, with just an iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone to be released.

Both the Pro model devices look to continue the exact specifications of the previous generation; any improvement in the processing power, performance, battery life, and camera specifications is unable to be gleaned from these mock-up models.

The mock-up is much stubier in design compared with a traditional iPhone. (Nine/Supplied)

An iPhone Ultra – a possible name for Apple’s foldable phone – features the ultra-thin design and construction launched last year with the iPhone Air, but in two halves. Critically, it has a design more akin to a passport (with a similar aspect to the Microsoft Duo device) rather than a traditional smartphone that opens like a book.

This design allows the “opened” format to be an aspect ratio more useful for watching video content as well as operating apps side by side.

A dual-camera system appears on the back, a step up from what was launched on the iPhone Air last year, and there also appear to be speakers top and bottom, something the iPhone Air was criticised for not having.

By the time Apple is able to announce this phone and bring it to market, Samsung will be on its eighth generation of Galaxy Fold. Meanwhile, Motorola continues its flip-folding Razr smartphone models, and Oppo just released its foldable Find N6 into Australia.

This year is shaping up as a battle of foldable products, and while Apple isn’t first to market, far from it, like with many other products before it, the tech giant may well define a market segment and create a new demand which all its competitors may in fact benefit from.

Whatever the case, I’m now confident in calling it – Apple will release a foldable iPhone in 2026, what it’s called we most certainly don’t know.

Unlocking Legislative Insights: Representative Crawford’s Take on Key Policy Decisions

KINGSPORT, Tenn. — In a recent discussion with News Channel 11, State Representative John Crawford (R-Kingsport) provided insights into the legislative policies currently under consideration in the 114th Tennessee General Assembly.

As the legislative session in Tennessee draws to a close, one of the most contentious topics has been the proposal to expand school vouchers, formally known as the Education Freedom Scholarship Program. This initiative has sparked significant debate among lawmakers and educators alike.

Proponents of the program acknowledge that its inaugural year suffered from inadequate data tracking. Nonetheless, they argue that preliminary results are promising and emphasize that funding safeguards for schools remain intact.

“We’ve invested $4.3 billion into public education, yet only $125 million had been utilized until the recent passage of the bill,” Crawford explained. “Now, this amount will increase to $300 million. I believe parents are best positioned to understand their children’s needs and to determine which schools are most suitable for them.”

While Crawford concedes that the initial rollout of the program faced challenges with data collection, he remains optimistic about its potential benefits, reiterating the commitment to maintaining financial protections for educational institutions.

“This year, with an amendment that was put on just a few days ago that extends that out to hold the schools harmless,” Crawford said. “And, so, I think we’ll probably see a little better tracking this year.”

Beyond education, Crawford said public safety has been a priority–backing a bill that would expand DNA collection for felony arrests to help solve crimes.

“By doing the DNA swab, it has already shown to be effective in being able to solve cases,” Crawford said. “And, I have the support of the sheriff’s association as well as the Turner machine. So, it’s a really good bill that can help us solve some cold cases and get some of these bad actors off of our streets.”

Lawmakers also made strides in healthcare with a focus on reshaping hospital systems in Northeast Tennessee by opening the door to more competition.

“Allow us to have people come in and you know, ask that they want to be a part of our system here and let them compete with Ballad and other systems,” Crawford said. “You know, I think that’s the best way we can do it as far as bringing prices down.”

Meanwhile, questions remain about funding for summer food assistance (EBT) programs. Crawford said more needs to be done to secure federal dollars for families in need.

“We are all in favor of it. The Northeast Tennessee delegation has worked really hard on trying to get that funding,” Crawford said. “We have secured some funding, but it’s just not enough to get us through the summer. And so, we will continue to push that.”

As the session comes to a close, Crawford said the focus now is on finalizing the state budget. Lawmakers are expected to wrap up the session in the coming days.

Explosive Drama Unfolds: Alicia Labels Rosie a ‘Snake’ While Liz Embraces Her Inner ‘Drunken Witch’ in Heated Kelsey Showdown

In the latest installment of Real Housewives of Rhode Island, tensions flare as Liz and Kelsey mend their friendship, but Rosie finds herself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. In a state where loyalty is paramount, Rosie’s attempts to stir drama don’t sit well with Alicia, who prides herself on being a “sensitive gangster” and refuses to let Rosie twist her words.

RHORI Recap: Alicia Calls Rosie a “Snake,” Liz Brands Herself a “Drunken Witch” and Apologizes to Kelsey After Clash, Plus Alicia Gets Emotional Over Fiancé’s Financial Control

Liz welcomes her twin sister, Dolores, for a sage ceremony at her home. After Jo-Ellen’s confrontation with Rulla, Liz feels it’s time to cleanse the space. She questions Rulla’s persistent denials regarding affair rumors, and Dolores observes the mean-spirited behavior from the previous night. Liz admits she came off as a “drunken witch” in her altercation with Kelsey, attributing her outburst to Kelsey’s avoidance of personal issues involving Dino.

Discussing the situation further, Liz reveals that Dino and Kelsey had a brief romantic involvement, which some have exaggerated into a scandalous affair involving Liz. This narrative hits a nerve for Liz, who feels betrayed by Kelsey. She acknowledges the need to apologize to Kelsey but insists that Kelsey also owes her an apology.

Ashley decides to whisk the ladies away to her favorite beach, hoping to shake up their typical country club scene. While indulging in pizza chips, Rosie suggests a trip to Rail Explorers, aiming for a drama-free outing. However, after the previous night’s events, tensions remain high. Jo-Ellen continues to involve herself in Rulla’s marriage, prompting Alicia to remind everyone of Rulla’s history: she met Brian while he was still married to her Spanish teacher.

Ashley brings the ladies to her favorite beach, but this is culture shock to this country club/beach club crew.  As they nosh on some pizza chips (where’s the cheese?!), Rosie invites them to Rail Explorers for some activities.  She is hopeful this type of outing will curtail any fighting, but after last night, nothing is off the table. Jo-Ellen is all up in Rulla’s marriage and Alicia points out that once a cheater, always a cheater: Rulla met Brian when he was married to her Spanish teacher.

But “enough about Rulla and her weirdo husband…” Alicia is about to lose it if Kelsey doesn’t explain what happened with Liz. Kelsey shares that she thought Liz should try to distance herself from any type of rumors about Dino and the alleged affair. Alicia explains that Liz is no BS and she even gets scared of her, so Kelsey better figure things out.

While Jo-Ellen is out of town for work, her sister comes to the rescue to help out at the house.  Despite her hubby touching her sister’s boobs while they were in high school, Jo-Ellen is not worried, even IF her sister refers to her and Gary as an old married couple and even IF her sister does perpetuate this fun “little game of flirting” with her husband.

Alicia loves spending time with her family and so she has invited a few of the ladies to join in on the fun. It is helpful that she has a long history with Liz.  Liz’s sister and Alicia’s mom are best friends, so Liz knows the whole gang and is basically part of the family. Rulla arrives and explains their interconnected lives between jewelry and pizzerias, whereas Ashley is very much the outsider.

The ladies get to chatting and everyone is kind of over Billy not putting Liz’s name on the house.  Billy is very much in control of Liz’s finances and although Alicia has been engaged to him for quite some time, she is still hesitant in getting married because she needs to feel more of a commitment.

Rulla gives her marital opinion and vaguely mentions the “bumps” in her own marriage. Rulla opens up about the indiscretions that her husband had and shares that she is having a hard time getting over the lies. As Rulla listens to all of the war stories from Alicia’s family about wandering husbands, she tries to find the good in Brian.  But at the end of the day, they all “hope and pray that” Rulla somehow hurts him. LOL.

Rosie explains that she does like children, yet she is unsure if she wants that responsibility of having her own. As she visits with Ashley and her kids, she admits that she is not ready to be a mom. Rosie shares that she was trying to get pregnant before they even got married, but she is very much in the gray area about this topic.  This might have something to do with Rosie’s relationship with her mom and she does not want to mess up any kids.

Liz’s husband’s sport fishing chapter is coming to an end and so he has sold the boat.  He used to be gone for three weeks to a month and it wasn’t uncommon for Gerry to call Dino to have him look after Liz.  Kelsey has been called upon to help Liz clean out the boat, but Kelsey is nervous after the way they left things.

Liz admits that she is not proud of her reactions and the word “ongoing” triggered her big time. Kelsey feels like she said it because she had a different experience with Dino and it wasn’t so good. Kelsey shares that she hooked up with Dino about ten years ago and he would show up to places Kelsey was after she called it off.  Therefore, she tried to cut him out of her life, but Dino is now around all the time.  Kelsey shares that she has PTSD over her relationship with Dino, but in the end, both ladies apologize and move on.

Rulla is thrilled to learn Jo-Ellen is out of town for Rosie’s workout outing.  After the way they left things, it’s better off.  On the car ride there, Rosie opens up about her colitis and claims she left the news job on medical leave, but Kelsey knows she really got fired for having an affair with one of the higher ups.  Woah.

The ladies arrive at Rail Explorers, pour themselves some drinks, and get going.  Rosie gets paired up with Liz and shakes her down for some information about Ashley.  Liz explains that her first impression of Ashley is not great, but Rosie lets Liz know that people think she’s scary.

As they sit down to eat, Rosie fills Ashley in on what Liz said about her.  Ashley swears that she is just shy, which people might mistake as b*tchiness. They walk back over to Alicia talking about her issues with Bill and she says that she has never had a conversation with Bill about her issues. Alicia wants Bill to put her on the house to show her that she is worth something and she becomes emotional role playing with Kelsey. Rulla reminds Alicia that she has value, despite not having any financial gains to bring to the table.

Later, Ashley states that she and Rosie have been intimated by Liz. Liz makes it clear that although she may look tough on the outside, deep down she is a softie.  She does not allow many people to get close to her and admits that she was drunk and heated at her party, which is why she lost it on Kelsey.

Rosie decides to stir the pot today.  “Alicia, you said she’s (Liz’s) always like that when she gets mad.” Ooo Rosie throwing Alicia under the bus. Alicia is not happy that Rosie is spinning this around and Liz is demanding to hear the truth. Rosie is doing a good job of p*ssing Alicia off and Alicia calls Rosie a “f*cking troll.”  She does not like how Rosie twisted her words and refers to her as a thirsty b*tch.

Rosie plays dumb and claims that Alicia thinks she is trying to start a problem with Liz. Ashley feels so bad for Rosie and realizes just how far Alicia would go to defend Liz. Alicia keeps calling Rosie a snake and Liz comes to talk to her off the ledge.

It is clear that Rosie will exaggerate and manipulate the truth, but that is not going to work with this group. Rosie apologizes to Alicia who is slowly coming down from her rage.  Alicia refers to herself as a “sensitive gangster” and as quickly as this fight erupted, they are already hugging it out. Rosie lives to see another day…this time.

Kash Patel Vows Legal Action Over Alleged 2020 Election Fraud Conspiracy

0

Kash Patel has declared that arrests are on the horizon as part of what he describes as an extensive conspiracy related to the 2020 presidential election.

This assertion from the FBI director follows closely on the heels of significant controversy sparked by a scathing report that accused Patel of unpredictable behavior and excessive alcohol consumption.

In a Sunday morning appearance on Fox News, Patel emphasized that those responsible for allegedly manipulating the election in favor of former President Joe Biden will be held accountable.

“This is something I will never let go,” Patel stated when questioned about the 2020 election. “They attempted to manipulate the entire system, and I will not stand by.”

“Arrests are imminent. I assure you, they are coming soon,” he added.

The comments marked his most forceful public declaration yet, going beyond previous hints that the FBI had gathered evidence tied to President Donald Trump’s long-standing claims that the election was stolen.

Such claims that have been repeatedly rejected by courts, election officials, and even Trump’s own Justice Department during his first term.

Patel stopped short of providing any specifics about the alleged evidence, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

But he insisted the material exists and suggested it is being folded into a broader conspiracy case being pursued alongside Department of Justice prosecutors under Attorney General Todd Blanche.

FBI Director Kash Patel said on Fox News that arrests related to a 2020 election conspiracy are imminent, stating: “It’s coming. I promise you it’s coming soon.”

‘We have the information that backs President Trump’s claim,’ Patel said earlier in the same interview. ‘I can’t get ahead of the DOJ and the president, but President Trump… speaks truthfully when he says that.’

‘Stay tuned this week. You might see a thing or two,’ he teased.

The extraordinary claims come at a moment of mounting pressure on Patel personally, following a bombshell report published by The Atlantic that painted a deeply troubling portrait of the FBI director’s conduct behind closed doors.

According to the report – based on interviews with more than two dozen current and former FBI officials – Patel has been ‘erratic, suspicious of others, and prone to jumping to conclusions before he has necessary evidence,’ with some sources describing his behavior as a potential ‘national-security vulnerability.’

The article alleged that meetings had to be rescheduled because Patel had been drinking the night before, and that concerns had been raised internally about whether alcohol may have contributed to missteps in high-profile investigations, including the aftermath of the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Hours after the killing of the conservative activist in September 2025, Patel took to X to announce that the ‘subject’ in Kirk’s murder was finally ‘in custody.’

But he walked back his earlier statement shortly after, announcing that the suspect ‘has been released after an interrogation by law enforcement.’

It also claimed that staffers at one point struggled to reach Patel due to his alleged drinking, and that concerns within the bureau have intensified as his behavior grew more unpredictable.

The Atlantic magazine published a report Friday alleging that officials are alarmed over FBI Director Kash Patel’s alleged excessive drinking

On one occasion, staffers allegedly requested ‘breaching equipment’ used in SWAT raids and hostage situations to try and break down his door, according to The Atlantic.

Patel is known to enjoy alcohol and has frequently appeared visibly intoxicated at clubs in Washington and in his home city of Las Vegas.

He reportedly also enraged the president after he was filmed chugging beer with the US men’s hockey team following their Olympic victory.

Fearing he was about to be fired by the Trump administration, he allegedly called aides and allies in panic – a reaction that, according to the report, quickly reached the White House.

Officials told the outlet they are increasingly alarmed about whether the FBI could respond to a national crisis like a terror attack with Patel at the helm.

‘That’s what keeps me up at night,’ an unnamed official told the publication.

Patel has categorically denied the allegations and is now preparing to take legal action.

‘You want to attack my character? Come at me. Bring it on. I’ll see you in court,’ he said on Sunday, confirming that a defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic is expected to be filed.

Patel’s advisor Erica Knight released a statement on X stating that Patel has only taken off a ‘grand total of 17 days’ and has worked more than his predecessors

Patel dismissed the report as part of a broader media campaign against him, calling it the work of a ‘fake news mafia’ and arguing that such attacks are evidence the FBI is effectively doing its job.

‘If the fake news mafia isn’t hitting you personally with baseless information in Washington, D.C., then you’re not doing your job,’ Patel said.

In response to The Atlantic’s recent bombshell claims, Patel’s advisor Erica Knight released a pointed statement on X, calling it a story ‘that every real DC reporter chased, couldn’t verify, and passed on.’

‘Here’s reality. Since being sworn in, Director Patel has taken a grand total of 17 days off – half as much time off as Comey and Wray – and he spends twice as much time in the office as either of them ever did,’ Knight wrote.

‘The so-called ‘intoxication incidents’ The Atlantic breathlessly reports have happened exactly ZERO times,’ she added.

She went on to list statistics she said were achieved under Patel’s tenure, including 67,000 arrests nationwide and ‘2,200+ kilos of fentanyl seized – enough to kill 178 million Americans.’ Such claims have not been independently verified.

The clash between Patel and The Atlantic has rapidly escalated into a high-stakes confrontation, with both sides digging in.

The magazine’s reporter, Sarah Fitzpatrick, has publicly stood by her reporting, stating in an interview that she ‘stand[s] by every word of this reporting’ and emphasizing that it was based on extensive sourcing, including current and former FBI personnel.

Meanwhile, Patel’s legal team has accused the outlet of publishing ‘false, unsourced and facially defamatory’ claims, arguing that the reporting relied on vague and unattributed allegations.

19-Year-Old Arrested with Marijuana and Ammo: Gang-Related Charges Elevate Case

0

Staff Report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities have detained 19-year-old Jamarian Lamar Gray, accusing him of marijuana distribution and illegal possession of ammunition following a traffic incident. Officials have also levied additional charges related to gang activity due to the ammunition possession.

On the evening of April 18, at approximately 7:47 p.m., an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a scooter on SW 6th Place near the 6900 block. The vehicle, which lacked proper lighting for nighttime operation, narrowly avoided a head-on collision with a minivan by veering into oncoming traffic, prompting the intervention.

The deputy reported that Gray, the scooter’s operator, exhibited aggressive behavior both verbally and physically upon being stopped. Additionally, there was a noticeable odor of both burnt and fresh marijuana emanating from him.

Upon informing Gray of an impending search based on probable cause, his agitation reportedly increased, and he attempted to leave the scene. After being restrained with handcuffs, Gray allegedly tried to escape once more. Throughout the search, he is reported to have persistently resisted by pushing and pulling away from the officers.

Two bags of marijuana, with a total weight of 32.5 grams, were reportedly found in his shorts pockets, along with six empty “apple seed” baggies and one round of 9mm ammunition; an almost-full box of zipper bags was reportedly found in a shopping bag he was carrying.

A deputy noted that Gray is a suspect in a theft of ammunition from Bass Pro, and that investigation is ongoing.

A deputy reported that during the incident, Gray and his friends at the scene made “numerous hand gestures/signs” that included making a “W” for “westside” — a “known blood criminal street gang affiliate.” The deputy reported that Gray stated several times that he was “about that life,” and Gray and his friends were all wearing “bright red clothing mixed with black, also a known sign of ‘flagging,’ or representing gang colors.”

Post Miranda, Gray reportedly did not want to speak to the deputy, but he stated spontaneously that he knows he is an adjudicated juvenile delinquent and cannot possess guns or ammunition.

Gray has been charged with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of ammunition by a gang-related juvenile delinquent (a sentencing enhancement), possession of drug paraphernalia in order to transport drugs, and resisting an officer without violence.

Gray has a juvenile conviction from 2022 for burglary of an unoccupied vehicle, and Judge Denise Ferrero ordered him released on his own recognizance.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
