Sandra Bullock Opens Up About Discussing Bryan Randall’s ALS Diagnosis with Her Children

0

Sandra Bullock recently opened up about how her children coped with her late partner Bryan Randall’s battle with ALS, highlighting that each child reacted quite differently to the diagnosis.

The star of “Practical Magic 2” disclosed that her children, Louis, 16, and Laila, 12, were fully informed of Randall’s condition, yet they created personal boundaries to manage the emotional strain when it became overwhelming.

Sharing insights on the “SmartLess” podcast, Bullock revealed, “A couple of years before Bryan passed away, [Louis] recognized that the situation wasn’t healthy for him to be around.”

Discussing her son further, Bullock said, “He’s very mature. His attitude was, ‘I’m here for you.’ I didn’t want him to feel the pressure of becoming the household man at such a young age. During that period, it was my responsibility to fulfill both roles.”

The actress also shared feeling a sense of guilt, acknowledging that Louis decided to simply be present and assist her with the aspects of their lives that were easier for him to handle.

“But, he smartly disengaged himself and said, this is a safer space for me to sit,” she explained. “And I said, ‘Absolutely you go.’”

As for Laila, she was “more bonded until about six months out,” Bullock said.

“And then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely,’” the “Miss Congeniality” star said.

“And I said, ‘But, if you do wanna go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.’”

Bullock shared that her kids were “completely aware” of Randall’s condition because he was “bedridden” and he was staying at her house with several nurses also onsite.

“They could see,” she said. “They have eyes. And, they are very, very astute kids. Very astute because they not only see the physical change, [but] there’s a behavior that changes in all of us.”

The “Proposal” star shared that she had Randall’s quarters in a separate part of her home from her children.

“I did my best to set up whatever I could, and I am lucky in that I had the means to pay for it,” she added elsewhere, saying how she also saw a child psychologist to help her kids navigate.

Three years after his diagnosis, Randall passed away from the neurodegenerative disease at the age of 57 on Aug. 5, 2023.

The model’s illness wasn’t publicly disclosed until after his death, with Bullock also sharing on the podcast, “He asked me not to share.”

While Bullock understood Randall’s request, she explained it “isolated [her] in the process” because the only person who knew was her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado.

Eventually, she confided in her longtime friend Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, who is the wife of  “SmartLess” co-host Jason Bateman.

“I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” Bullock explained.

“There was something that had shifted,” she added. “My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”

According to the ALS Association, it’s a “progressive disease in which a person’s brain loses connection with the muscles, slowly taking away their ability to walk, talk, eat and eventually breathe.” There is also no cure.

Bullock and Randall first crossed paths in January 2015 when he worked as the photographer at Louis’ birthday party. They made their relationship romantic soon after and went public with their romance at the premiere of her movie “Our Brand Is Crisis” that October.

She previously gushed over Randall as “the love of [her] life” and “the best thing ever” on “Red Table Talk” in December 2021.

Randall helped raise Bullock’s children, whom she adopted. As for Randall, he shared 32-year-old daughter, Skylar, with his ex Janine Staten.

Ex-NBA Star Slams WNBA Amid Draft Outcome Controversy

0

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom is making headlines as he stands firm in his bid to enter the WNBA, even as reports suggest that the league’s leaders have decided he’s ineligible for the 2027 draft, allegedly leaving them feeling uneasy.

Kanter Freedom has stirred significant controversy in recent weeks by announcing his plans to enter next year’s draft, highlighting the ongoing debate about transgender athletes’ participation in sports.

On Monday, new reports suggested that both Kanter Freedom and fellow former NBA player Royce White, who also expressed interest in declaring for the draft, have been deemed ineligible to compete in the league.

This development unfolded just a day after Kanter Freedom was removed from a WNBA game following a confrontation with Chicago Sky’s Natasha Cloud.

During the match against the Indiana Fever, tensions flared when Cloud confronted Freedom, who was controversially positioned courtside, igniting a heated dispute.

In a viral clip of the incident, the pair could be seen shouting at each other before the former New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder player stood up and held his arms out, while Cloud was held back by security.

On Monday afternoon, Freedom sat down with Fox News to discuss the ongoing saga. Responding to reports that the WNBA had ruled him ineligible, he said: ‘Listen, Article 13 Section 1 says if you identify as a woman, then you are allowed to play! I identify as a woman, so yes, I can play.’

He added: ‘They’re terrified because I might actually get drafted and play against their big men. I’m probably going to drop 60 points.’

In the WNBA’s current collective bargaining agreement, it states ‘only players who are women are eligible to play.’ But there is no specific definition of a woman.

According to Front Office Sports, a league representative said that the WNBA is ‘not going to give oxygen to efforts designed to mock the league or use this topic to demean and marginalize others.’

When it was put to the 34-year-old that he will never be allowed to play in the WNBA, he responded: ‘Why not? That’s the rules. I’m just following the rules.

‘If they ever come out and say: “Okay, we’re changing the rules.” I respect their decision, I will follow the rules. But right now, if you identify as a woman, you’re allowed to play. And I am identifying as a woman and I should be allowed to play.’

During his appearance at Wintrust Arena on Sunday night, the ex-NBA star wore a provocative t-shirt that included a definition of the word woman. ‘Woman. Noun,’ it read. ‘Adult human female.’ The words woman and female were highlighted in red.’

He was later kicked out of the game but on Monday, Kanter Freedom dismissed suggestions that he is banned from future WNBA games.

Cloud stormed over to Freedom, who was sitting courtside, and sparked a furious argument

In fact, the 34-year-old claimed he would be attending every Indiana Fever game during the upcoming WNBA playoffs.

‘I have not heard it [about an arena ban],’ he said. If there is any news out there, please don’t listen to those sources because it’s all fake news.

‘I did not break any kind of rules. I did not step over the baseline, I simply got up and just opened my arms. So they should not be banning me from any games and I am so excited for the playoffs.

‘I cannot wait to go to every playoff game that Indiana Fever plays. It’s going to be fun because I’m a fan of the game.’

Fever games have been targeted by protests and counter protests in recent weeks after Sophie Cunningham sparked a war of words by claiming she wants to ‘protect young girls… who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.’

During his interview on Monday, Kanter Freedom branded Cunningham a ‘national treasure’ who ‘should be protected at all costs.’

‘She is an American hero,’ he told Fox. ‘Because she’s not only inspiring young girls in America but all over the world. So she is an idol, a hero.’

The 6ft 10ins Freedom previously alleged that it was Cloud who initiated their courtside confrontation and told him that Cunningham ‘won’t sleep with you.’

He told OutKick: ‘Sophie Cunningham shot a three, and I put my hands up to celebrate. Literally, a couple [of] possessions later, Natasha came back and started screaming and yelling and said, “She’s not gonna sleep with you.”

Freedom was confronted by furious fans as he arrived at the game

He was flanked by police officers in Chicago

Earlier in the night, Freedom was confronted by fans as he arrived at the Fever-Sky clash

‘And I was like, “I am not trying to sleep with her. I’m just here to protect women and support her.” And then, obviously, after that, she started yapping, and she started to walk towards me, and literally I just got up, and then I was like, “I’m just here to protect women, and that’s all.”

‘She started to yell. She started to use some very heavy language. She started to actually cuss, and I was very shocked that there were a lot of kids and that there were a lot of teenagers at that game.

‘I just cannot believe that she was just cussing and using those F-bombs in front of all these kids. I’m sure she’s loved in Chicago and many kids are idolizing her and stuff, but that’s not how a WNBA athlete should react.’

Taking to X after he was removed by security, Freedom wrote: ‘I just got kicked out of a @WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, AMERICA!’

He also wrote: ‘It’s always women hating on other women’.

Tragic End to Massachusetts Search: Missing Woman Discovered Deceased After Officer Husband’s Death

0

Authorities have uncovered the body of a woman in the woods of Worcester, Massachusetts, on Monday. The individual is believed to be Karen Solomon, the missing spouse of a veteran police officer from the city who was found dead just last week. Near the body, investigators recovered a handgun, according to official reports.

Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier shared that the grim discovery was made by two employees from Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital. The staff members stumbled upon the body while taking a walk around the vicinity of the facility at approximately 12:40 p.m.

“As we looked into the matter, we have reason to believe the deceased is Karen Solomon,” Saucier announced during a press briefing. He underscored the fact that this identification remains tentative and will need confirmation from the medical examiner’s office.

The investigation suggests that Solomon’s death was a result of suicide. Preliminary findings indicate she sustained a gunshot wound, as revealed by Chief Saucier. A handgun was retrieved near her remains; however, it was clarified that this weapon was not linked to law enforcement service.

At the time of her discovery, Karen Solomon, aged 58, had been listed as a missing person by Massachusetts police. (Worcester Police Department)

The department now believes the case was a “tragic murder-suicide,” though the investigation remains ongoing, Saucier said.

Karen Solomon, 58, had been missing since her husband, Worcester Police Officer Kurt Solomon, was found dead inside the couple’s Wildwood Avenue home on Aug. 18.

Police responded to the residence at about 5:28 a.m. after receiving a report of a person down and found the off-duty Worcester police officer dead inside, authorities said. His cause and manner of death have not been released.

Authorities initially said Karen Solomon was a suspect they wanted to question about what happened at the home and warned that she was believed to be armed and dangerous.

The woman’s body was found about 0.6 miles from an area where police had released video showing Solomon walking behind an animal clinic, Saucier said. The Coes Pond area and park, which police had been searching since the first day of the investigation, spans about 90 acres.

Saucier said investigators cannot yet say when Solomon died. Police did not receive any reports of a gunshot being heard Monday, he said.

The chief also pushed back on speculation surrounding domestic violence. The case was described as domestic under Massachusetts law because it involved family or household members, he said, but added that the Solomon family had no history of domestic abuse.

The Solomon family said the “nightmare of the past week” had left them “heartbroken and rudderless” in a statement read by Saucier.

“The compassion, dedication and empathy of all the agencies involved have given us light in face of darkness,” the family said, thanking local, state and federal law enforcement agencies that joined the search. “You have given us comfort knowing that you were working on our behalf for us.”

Police have disclosed few details about what happened inside the residence, citing the ongoing investigation.

Public records reviewed by The Associated Press show Kurt and Karen Solomon co-owned the Wildwood Avenue residence. Kurt Solomon also identified Karen Solomon as his wife in a 2016 bankruptcy filing, according to the AP.

The New England Police Benevolent Association identified Kurt Solomon as a 31-year veteran of the Worcester Police Department and remembered him as an “incredibly dependable officer, colleague and friend.”

“Thirty-one years of service represents an extraordinary commitment to a community and to the profession of law enforcement,” the association said. “Officer Kurt Solomon answered that call for more than three decades, and his service, friendship and dedication will not be forgotten.”

The investigation remains ongoing.

Gainesville Man Charged in Box Cutter Assault with Dog Attack

0

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a startling incident yesterday, 64-year-old Napoleon Filer Jr. found himself behind bars after allegedly attacking a man with a box cutter and instructing his dog to attack, resulting in severe wounds on the man’s leg and a facial slash.

According to an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy, around 4:50 p.m. on August 23, a passerby near an apartment complex in Linton Oaks (located on the 1200 block of SW 61st Street) was approached by Filer, who demanded $30, a debt from a previous marijuana transaction.

The victim recounted that he explained to Filer his recent job loss and his ongoing attempt to gather the owed funds. This failed to pacify Filer, who allegedly became irate, accusing the victim of playing games, before brandishing a box cutter in a threatening manner.

As he evaded the menacing swipes of the box cutter, the victim saw Filer’s dog dash from the apartment’s open door. Filer reportedly commanded the dog to “sic ’em,” leading to the animal charging and ultimately biting the victim’s leg. While struggling with the dog, the victim reported that Filer struck him in the face with the box cutter, leaving a small but painful cut on his cheek.

After the dog released its grip, the victim tried retrieving his glasses from the ground. Filer is said to have issued a direct threat, warning, “If you don’t leave, I’ve got something else for you.” He vanished briefly into his apartment, emerging seconds later with what appeared to be a firearm featuring a pink slide. Pointing it menacingly, he allegedly declared, “If you come back, I’m going to kill you.” The weapon reportedly resembled a 9mm or .380 pistol. In fear for his life, the victim fled on his bicycle, leaving his glasses behind on the pavement of the apartment complex.

The deputy made contact with Filer at his apartment and detained him. Post Miranda, Filer reportedly said that nothing had happened that day and he had just come outside to cook food on the grill.

The deputy canvassed the area and reportedly found the victim’s glasses in the parking lot.

Filer has been charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has four felony convictions (two violent) and 16 misdemeanor convictions (three violent); he has served one state prison sentence and was released in 2009. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Sydney Sweeney Stuns in Thrilling Plane-Top Stunt: A Daring Adventure in the Sky

0

Sydney Sweeney recently took a playful jab at Tom Cruise as she recreated one of his most daring and memorable stunts.

The 28-year-old actress, who gained attention for channeling the iconic Wonder Woman played by Lynda Carter, wowed her fans by posting a breathtaking clip on Instagram. The video featured Sweeney executing a heart-stopping wing walk on an airplane mid-flight.

In her caption, she gave a nod to the legendary 64-year-old actor, who originally performed the stunt for the latest blockbuster in the Mission: Impossible series, “The Final Reckoning.”

Fearlessly standing atop the plane, Sweeney’s video showed her navigating the thrilling ride on the structure that generates lift and drag. She cheekily captioned her post with a message to her nearly 26 million followers, saying, “watch out tom cruise.”

Wing walking, a daring aviation sport, involves standing or maneuvering on the upper wing of a flying biplane, delivering an adrenaline-pumping spectacle.

In last year’s final Mission: Impossible flick, Cruise famously wing walked on a vintage bi-plane which no doubt helped the film gross an incredible near $600million worldwide during its theatrical run.

Meanwhile, over the weekend, Sweeney put on a busty display in a sizzling new couple’s costume with her boyfriend Scooter Braun.

The actress wore a plunging Wonder Woman outfit that served as an echo of Lynda Carter’s classic 1970s turn as the superheroine.

Meanwhile, the 45-year-old music mogul showcased his own musclebound physique in a skintight Superman unitard as he posed beside his girlfriend.

Sweeney had welcomed a group of loved ones to her Idaho lake house, which she nicknamed ‘Camp Runamuck’ as a place for her family to frolic about freely.

She posted an Instagram album of her latest escapades there with some of her intimates, including videos of them singing such songs as Mamma Mia! by ABBA and Creep by Radiohead during a karaoke session.

The Euphoria bombshell was pictured beaming as she held a tray of shots, and filmed driving a jet ski as a passenger who appeared to be Braun clung to her from behind.

Sweeney revealed last year that the lake house had been in her family for ‘five generations,’ noting that both her mother and grandmother were born there.

When her great-grandparents died, the family sold the property off ‘to another couple,’ she explained on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

However in 2022, having firmly established herself as a Hollywood starlet, Sweeney marched up to the home and said: ‘I wanna buy back my great-grandma’s house.’

Sweeney’s lake house was originally constructed in 1937 and is currently in her mother Lisa’s name, according to records obtained by Realtor.

Her latest getaway to the Idaho vacation home comes after she and Braun performed volunteer work in her hometown of Spokane, Washington, amid devastating wildfires she said had impacted members of her own family.

Sweeney and Braun had been bringing food to firefighters and helping prepare and distribute meals to those affected by the fires, according to TMZ.

The pair volunteered with Second Harvest Food Bank in Spokane and World Central Kitchen.

Sweeney was also seen buying groceries and working with restaurants in the area to secure food and shelter for residents who have been uprooted from their homes, a source told the publication.

The Euphoria star has also reportedly made generous donations to a number of relief organizations.

She took to her Instagram Stories with a series of messages as government officials said August 4 that the blaze had scorched more than 10,546 acres and affected at least 700 structures.

‘Spokane has always been home to me,’ the A-list actress wrote on the social media platform. ‘It’s where I grew up, where my family still lives, and where so many of the people and places that shaped me are.’

Sweeney, who’s received Emmy nominations for her work on shows such as The White Lotus and Euphoria, said that ‘the devastating fires have changed countless lives in ways that are hard to put into words.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Sweeney for further comment on the story.

Sweeney said that her relatives were among 65,000 people officials estimated were under orders to evacuate their homes, according to USA Today.

‘Thousands of families have lost their homes, their belongings, and places of business, including members of my own family,’ Sweeney said.

The star said that ‘this devastation is something our community has never experienced on this scale.’

Sweeney added that ‘unlike larger cities that often receive an overwhelming amount of national attention and resources, Spokane doesn’t have the same spotlight.’

‘If you’re looking for ways to help, these are four organizations I’m supporting that are on the ground right now helping this community that needs us,’ she said.

Sweeney added links to organizations she said were ‘doing the real work on the ground’ – including Innovia Foundation, SpokAnimal, Watch Duty and Second Harvest.

She noted, ‘Every donation, no matter the size, will help support those affected as they begin the long road to rebuilding.

Sweeney subsequently reposted a post from the nonprofit Baby2Baby, which indicated it had delivered almost ‘350,000 emergency supplies including diapers, wipes, formula, hygiene products, towels, comfort items and bottles to support children and families displaced by this disaster.’

Sweeney opened up to Harper’s Bazaar Australia three years ago about how her maternal side of the family was from the area.

She said that the 2008 economy crash ultimately led them to move from Spokane to Los Angeles, where she was getting her beginnings in show business.

‘It’s very difficult coming from a small town and a lower-middle-class family, affording two places at the same time,’ Sweeney said. ‘Then the crash happened, and my dad lost his job, and we lost our home.’

‘My parents just made the decision, “Let’s just stay in LA; we don’t have anything holding us back home anymore.”‘

Upon establishing herself in Hollywood, Sweeney said she eventually purchased a house that her great-grandparents once owned.

‘To be able to put memories like that back into our family was very special,’ she told the outlet.

On August 3, officials announced that Spokane resident Aaron F. Farinacci, 37, had been taken into custody and held on $1 million bond in connection with suspicion of first-degree arson, according to the AP.

Farinacci, who denied starting the blaze, had been questioned by authorities twice last year in other fire-related probes, per records in Spokane County Superior Court.

He had previously served about 10 years in prison after fatally shooting his father in Mesa, Arizona in 2010, authorities said.

He entered a guilty plea to manslaughter and aggravated assault in 2012, court records indicated.

Netherlands Exits Eurovision Amid Gaza Dispute Tensions

0

The Netherlands has decided not to participate in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest. The country’s broadcaster announced on Monday that the event’s neutrality has been compromised due to divisions related to the Gaza conflict.

Taco Zimmerman, Director-General of AVROTROS, expressed concerns in a statement, saying, “It is evident that international conflicts are increasingly influencing the Contest, compromising its neutral standing. Therefore, the Eurovision Song Contest has become a stage for division.”

Recently, the contest has faced several boycotts due to Israel’s involvement.

Earlier this month, Eurovision organizers declared that nations engaged in armed conflicts would be prohibited from hosting the event.

Despite these measures, AVROTROS stated, “The recently announced changes do not provide sufficient assurance that the Eurovision Song Contest’s independent and neutral nature has been reestablished.”

Israel came close to winning the competition in both 2025 and 2026, ultimately finishing second on each occasion.

Next year’s event, the world’s biggest live televised music event, will take place on 15 May in Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Burgas.

It will be the first time that the Balkan nation hosts the contest, coming after Bulgarian singer Darina Yotova, known as Dara, won this year’s contest in the Austrian capital Vienna with the catchy floor-filler “Bangaranga”.

Since its launch in 1955, Eurovision has become the ultimate pop platform, catapulting Swedish icons ABBA to worldwide fame, as well as boosting the likes of Celine Dion, Cliff Richard and Olivia Newton-John.

The 2026 competition was watched by 131 million viewers, down 35 million on the year before after five countries boycotted it over Israel’s participation.

The Netherlands, Iceland, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia all pulled out of the contest — with the latter three refusing to broadcast the show at all.

‘Painful’

The Dutch took part in the very first Eurovision Song Contest back in 1956, and have won on five occasions.

The most recent winner was Duncan Laurence, whose song Arcade won the contest in 2019, going on to top charts globally.

It became the first Eurovision entry to reach one billion streams on Spotify, according to the Eurovision website.

The withdrawal is “painful as we would have very much liked to be part of the Contest again next year,” said Zimmerman.

“As a public broadcaster, we remain committed to our values. They guide us in everything we do, even when that means stepping away from an event that is very close to our hearts,” he added.

Martin Green, the director of the Eurovision Song Contest, told the Agence France-Presse news agency the organisation regrets the decision, but understood and respected the choice.

Green said organisers would investigate whether another Dutch broadcaster might be willing to participate in the contest.

“We very much hope that audiences and artists in the Netherlands can continue to be represented in the Eurovision Song Contest,” said Green.

AVROTROS selects and manages the Dutch entry to the contest.

North Carolina Doctor Faces Charges After Alleged Road Rage Shooting of Sisters on Interstate

A North Carolina physician found himself in legal trouble after reportedly firing shots into a Jeep during a road rage episode on the highway, leaving two sisters injured. This unsettling incident unfolded on August 22, according to a report from the Virginia State Police.

The doctor in question, 61-year-old Dr. Richard Thomas Arriviello from Charlotte, North Carolina, was driving his Mercedes-Benz northbound on Interstate 77. The altercation escalated around 8:50 a.m., just three miles beyond the border separating North Carolina and Virginia.

According to a press release by state police, Arriviello allegedly discharged his firearm into the moving Jeep, hitting both sisters in their legs as they traveled along the highway.

The injured sisters were promptly airlifted to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, their injuries are not deemed to be life-threatening, authorities confirmed.

NYC Parks Revival: Mamdani Unveils $2.3M ‘Renew Crews’ Initiative to Revitalize Playgrounds

On a promising note this Monday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani revealed a new initiative featuring a 24-member “renew crew” that will set forth on rejuvenating various city playgrounds, recreational centers, and basketball courts.

This dynamic team, consisting of skilled plumbers, painters, and other workers, is geared up to undertake approximately 30 projects each year, with each project lasting about three weeks. Spanning from April to October, these efforts have been allocated a budget of $2.3 million for the current year, as reported by City Hall.

“Our crew is wholly committed to rejuvenating playgrounds, sports facilities, and rec centers in parks scattered across all five boroughs,” Mamdani shared during a press briefing held in Queens.

He painted a vivid picture of the issues at hand by highlighting examples like a dangling basketball hoop, a non-functional water fountain since spring, or a precarious fence. “If it’s broken, this team is ready to bring it back to its prime,” Mamdani assured.

In a symbolic kick-off event at Forest Park’s Dry Harbor Playground, the Mayor, along with city officials, watched as the “renew crew” embarked on their inaugural project—refreshing the look of the basketball courts and sprucing up the nautical-themed playground equipment.

Upwards of 5,000 complaints have been made to 311 regarding needed fixes to recreation areas over the past year, Mamdani said.

The maintenance team will address faulty horseshoe and bocce courts, rickety benches and other common park amenities in disrepair. They’ll also be mulching, pruning trees and enhancing the greenery around 9/11 memorial, city officials said.

New Yorkers can keep up with the crew’s progress at NYC Parks’ online tracker.

Maxime, an eight-year-old New Yorker, told reporters at the press conference that he’d recorded a video urging Mamdani to re-open the McKinley Park playground in Brooklyn, which had been closed for two years.

“But guess what? A few weeks later, the park was finally open. So thank you, Mayor Mamdani and NYC Parks for hearing me out,” Maxime said.

“I’m really passionate about parks being opened because kids need a safe and fun environment to play in.”

New Tariff on China Considered by Trump Amid Concerns Over Market Flooding with Inexpensive Goods

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump is poised to introduce a new tariff aimed at China, targeting the nation for its practice of flooding the market with cheaply priced goods. This move, confirmed by three insiders knowledgeable about the situation, intends to address trade imbalances with the world’s second-largest economy.

Two of these sources, requesting anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, indicated that the proposed tariff might be set at 7.5%. This figure is believed to be strategic, aimed at not disrupting the existing one-year trade truce with Beijing or upsetting the anticipated White House summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for late September.

Should this action be finalized, it suggests a carefully measured response from the White House, navigating around a Supreme Court decision earlier this year. That ruling had invalidated Trump’s earlier, more comprehensive high-tariff plan reminiscent of trade measures from the 1930s.

Following the decision, in March, the Trump administration launched formal investigations into China and other countries concerning issues such as surplus industrial capacity and coercive labor policies.

It remains uncertain whether the U.S. is close to reaching conclusions on these investigations into other markets, which include the European Union, Singapore, Switzerland, and several others. These countries were flagged for allegedly engaging in unfair trade practices.

The White House and the U.S. Trade Representative’s office did not respond to requests for comment on the tariff deliberations, which Bloomberg News reported earlier Monday.

The Chinese embassy in Washington said in a statement that economic and trade issues should be resolved through bilateral talks rather than unilateral tariff actions, and rejected the idea that it has an issue with overcapacity.

The excess industrial capacity probe of China was initiated under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to levy tariffs against nations that discriminate against U.S. companies or commerce.

The new tariff would come on top of existing tariffs on China

The people familiar with the deliberations stressed that Trump could still change his mind on the new tariff on China.

It would come on top of tariffs of 10% to 12.5% announced last month for 60 economies around the globe that the Trump administration accused of failing to effectively enforce a ban on goods produced with forced labor.

Many countries, including China, protested that move, which took effect just as the clock ran out on temporary tariffs Trump had turned to after the Supreme Court in February struck down sweeping “reciprocal” tariffs he levied on nearly every U.S. trade partner.

China last month pushed back against claims of overcapacity, anticipating that the U.S. would soon release results of its probe and impose new tariffs.

Massive capacity in a slew of Chinese industries, from autos to solar panels, cement and steel manufacturing, has drawn increased attention from Beijing’s trading partners in recent years.

Although China’s own leaders have prioritized rebalancing the economy, slowing domestic demand has prompted companies to expand into overseas markets. Surging exports pushed China’s trade surplus to a record of nearly $1.2 trillion last year.

China has never sought a large trade surplus, the Ministry of Commerce said in a recently published report titled “China’s Position on the So-called Excess Capacity Issue.”

The deliberations come as the Treasury Department on Monday warned countries doing trade with Iran that new secondary sanctions are in the pipeline aimed at ostracizing nations that continue to do business with Tehran. China is Iran’s biggest trade partner.

Washington has promised the new sanctions would put even more pressure on an Iranian economy already battered by previous sanctions and a U.S. naval blockade as the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran nears the six-month mark.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s announcement Monday provided little detail and did not name which countries could face secondary sanctions.
