SPOILER ALERT! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 22 OF GREY’S ANATOMY! The season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy concluded with a startling twist: Dr. Amelia Shepherd (portrayed by Caterina Scorsone) and Dr. Cass Beckman (played by Sophia Bush) had a surprising romantic encounter. Sophia Bush has now shared her reaction to this development. Earlier in the episode, Amelia’s current partner, Dr. Toni Wright (Jen Landon), was caught in a dilemma, torn between her and her ex-wife, Celine, due to their shared parenting of a son, Zach. This led Amelia to mistakenly believe that Toni would choose her ex over her.

In a dramatic turn, Toni appeared at Amelia’s apartment towards the episode’s end, ready to confess her growing feelings and desire to pursue their relationship. However, she was met with a shocking scene: Cass was in Amelia’s bed. Heartbroken and disillusioned, Toni realized she had misunderstood their connection, prompting her to leave as Amelia called out to her.

Previously, Cass had a romantic entanglement with Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), who was navigating marital issues with her husband, Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). The season finale wrapped up with Teddy and Owen rekindling their relationship and deciding to relocate to Paris with their children, Leo and Allison, marking the departure of Raver and McKidd from the show. Meanwhile, Cass maintains an open marriage with her husband, Dr. David Beckman (Wil Traval).

Cass had previously been romantically involved with Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) when the latter was having marital problems with her husband, Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). However, the Grey’s Anatomy season 22 finale ended with Teddy and Owen officially getting back together and moving to Paris with their two children, Leo and Allison, because their portrayers, Raver and McKidd, left the show. Cass is also in an open marriage with her husband, Dr. David Beckman (Wil Traval).

In an interview with EW, Bush revealed that she was completely shocked by Cass and Amelia’s hookup, but she was thrilled about. She shared, “When I flipped to that page, the gasp, I mean, I shrieked so loud I scared everyone in my house.”

Bush explained that fans have been wanting to see Cass and Amelia together since she first set foot on the Grey’s Anatomy set, so she was so happy that the writers put them together for a romantic encounter. She said, “You immediately get that question of like, ‘What happened? This is insane.’ Also, I was just giggling to myself because from the moment that Cass showed up at Grey Sloan, the whole gay internet has been asking for this. And I was like, ‘Oh, okay. Writers’ room, I see you!’”

Sophia Bush Created A Backstory For Cass & Amelia

The only interaction that viewers saw between Cass and Amelia during the Grey’s Anatomy season 22 finale was when they spoke right before Cass performed surgery on Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), Dr. Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) now-fiancé, after he was injured in the bridge collapse. Cass had come to help out at Grey Sloan because she couldn’t get to her job at Seattle Presbyterian because of the tragedy.

Cass and Amelia were left alone together when Meredith went to enlist the help of Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), and Amelia explained to Cass that Meredith had lost her first husband, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), due to incompetent surgeons. However, she didn’t tell her that Derek was her brother.

Bush shared that she came up with a “whole backstory” explaining how Cass and Amelia might’ve ended up having their romantic encounter. She said, “Maybe when Meredith storms off down the hall and leaves Cass and Amelia to figure out what to do just ahead of Nick’s surgery, Amelia said, ‘Text me updates. I’ll go deal with her.’ Maybe that was the sort of connection. And then everybody winds up at the bar afterwards to get a beer or whatever, blowing off some steam.”

Sophia Bush Considers If Cass Can Fully Commit To Amelia When She’s In An Open Marriage

Bush revealed that she portrays Cass as someone who “really loves David, [but] maybe is not necessarily in love with him anymore. But they’ve figured out this way to get what they need and maintain what they have.”

However, Bush isn’t sure if their marriage can last with this dynamic. She said, “If that’s the case, as I believe it is, other people can have a different opinion, I don’t know how long that lasts. Maybe it works forever, and maybe it doesn’t, but I do think there’s an awful lot of women I know and women in the world who are having this sort of similar experience going, ‘Did I choose my life or did I just sort of follow the path that was laid out for me? If I were going to choose now in my adulthood, knowing what I know, having the experiences I’ve had, would I choose differently?’”

Bush believes that if Cass is honest with herself, there could be a place that would lead to her moving past her open marriage. She said, “And I think if Cass is wondering about what her answers are to those questions, there’s absolutely room for something more than just an exploration, but maybe something that begets even more questions for her.”

Bush gushed that Amelia is a real catch, so Cass might consider something more long-term with her, but she also acknowledged that this was only her own speculation. She said, “Let’s be honest, we’re talking about Amelia Shepherd. She’s incredible. She’s not like a fly-by-night kind of moment. This is, obviously, just me spitballing and trying to consider how these experiences feel as real as possible.” The good news is that Bush hopes to return for Grey’s Anatomy season 23, so fans might get answers to all of these questions.

Ever since Cass first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, she’s been shaking things up, and her latest encounter with Amelia is certain to make waves. Cass is a brilliant trauma surgeon in her own right, and, with Owen gone, there’s room at Grey Sloan for her. If she joined the hospital staff, she’d be a permanent presence, which would be a welcome change. Hopefully, Bush will be back for Grey’s Anatomy season 23.
