NEWBERRY, Fla. – An 18-year-old named Jackell A. Harris was taken into custody yesterday after reportedly threatening a woman with a knife for waking him up to go to school.
The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. on May 5, when an Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputy was dispatched to Brookside Apartments located at 100 NW 146th Drive. The woman reported that upon waking Harris, he leapt out of bed, exclaiming he was “about to snap in here.” Harris then allegedly grabbed a butcher knife from the kitchen, threatening to harm himself and others.
The woman quickly retreated to her bedroom, closing the door behind her as Harris allegedly followed with the knife, stabbing at the door and shouting threats to kill her.
Another individual in the apartment confirmed he was present in the woman’s bedroom when she rushed in and slammed the door. He reported hearing Harris stabbing the door and making threats. Upon realizing the woman had called 911, Harris reportedly fled the scene.
The deputy reported that the bedroom door was damaged from being stabbed, and a large butcher knife was found on the stairs near the front door of the apartment.
Harris was later arrested in the 4100 block of SW 34th Street.
Harris, who attends an alternative charter school, has been charged with domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has no criminal history. Judge Meshon Rawls ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.
