The innovative found footage film “Milk & Serial” features Curry Barker as Milk and Cooper Tomlinson from “Obsession” as Seven, two friends who operate a prank video channel. Their antics escalate when they stage a scene where a seemingly random man appears to have killed one of their friends at Milk’s birthday bash. What begins as innocent prank escalation soon takes a dark turn as the narrative shifts focus to Milk’s private life. Without giving too much away, Milk is harboring a significant secret from his companions.

Initially, Curry Barker sought a distribution deal for “Milk & Serial,” but he ultimately chose to self-release the film. Concerned that fans might struggle to find the movie, Barker opted to debut it on his YouTube channel. “We just wanted the best home for it,” Barker shared with Variety. “Despite working hard for a year to secure distribution, we decided to say ‘screw it’ and put it on YouTube.”

This decision proved wise as the film gained traction online, accumulating 2.8 million views. This wasn’t Barker’s first viral success on YouTube. In 2023, he released the short film “The Chair,” about the eerie experience of bringing a mysterious chair home. It amassed 9.9 million views, opening doors for Barker to pitch “Obsession” to industry executives and secure a film deal.

YouTube helped put Curry Barker on the map

Barker is among several YouTubers transitioning to mainstream film. Kane Parsons, known as Kane Pixels, adapted the “The Backrooms” creepypasta into a successful 2026 film. Chris Stuckmann, also a YouTuber, secured a distribution deal with Neon for his horror movie “Shelby Oaks” in 2024 after building anticipation with online videos. Similarly, Danny and Michael Philippou, the minds behind 2022’s “Talk to Me,” honed their filmmaking skills on YouTube before their feature debut. The platform continues to launch the next wave of horror directors, and “Milk & Serial” serves as a compelling introduction to Barker’s creative talents.

It turned out to be the best way forward. The film became popular on social media, and today has 2.8 million views. But this wasn’t the first time Barker had a project go viral on YouTube. In 2023, the director posted “The Chair,” a short film about bringing a mysterious chair home. It went on to garner 9.9 million views on the platform and led to Barker getting the opportunity to pitch “Obsession” to executives and land a film deal.

Barker also isn’t the only YouTuber to make the jump to the big screen recently. Kane Parsons, known as Kane Pixels on the platform, created a web series based on the creepypasta “The Backrooms,” turning it into the hit 2026 movie “Backrooms.” YouTuber Chris Stuckmann secured a distribution deal with Neon for his horror film “Shelby Oaks” in 2024 after teasing it with a collection of videos, while the directors of 2022’s “Talk to Me,” Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, used YouTube to develop their filmmaking skills for their first feature. YouTube is helping catapult the next generation of horror directors, and watching “Milk & Serial” should be your first stop to see more of Barker’s work.
