Australia’s Path to Sporting Greatness: Lessons from Norway’s Haaland

0

Ryan Worn puts forth that Norway has a strategic approach to succeeding in sports.

With a population comparable to Melbourne’s, around 5.6 million, Norway is notably smaller than Brazil, a football powerhouse with a populace 38 times that of the Nordic nation.

Nevertheless, Norway didn’t let size be a barrier, as two goals from their striker, Erling Braut Haaland, secured a win against Brazil, sending them out of the tournament on Monday. This 2-1 triumph also set a distressing milestone for Brazil as their earliest World Cup departure since 1990.

For the first time in 28 years, Norway is back in the World Cup and is progressing further than ever before. Their next challenge is England in the quarter-finals this coming Sunday.

Norway’s impressive performance isn’t restricted to football. The nation is also excelling in winter sports and boasts a women’s handball team that has clinched the ‘triple crown’ by winning European, World, and Olympic titles.

Worn, a senior lecturer in exercise and sport science at Federation University, attributed the historic win against Brazil to Norway’s unique youth sports strategy, which has been in place for decades.

“In Australia, if you’re a good nine-year-old [footballer], you might get selected to go into a junior academy. Then, you get the best coaches, you get the best pitches to play on … that’s not the case in Norway,” Worn told SBS News.

“Their key player, Haaland, he played for his [local] club until he became a professional. So they’re playing in this club level support that’s well supported … they play more sports for longer before specialising.”

The Norwegian paradox

In Norway, this approach to youth sport is known as Idrettsglede — the joy of sport for all. It’s designed to keep Norwegians active by encouraging children to sample different sports and discouraging early specialisation.

Worn has studied this training model and said the focus is on enjoyment, rather than competition.

“Before the age of 13, there’s no public league tables, no official match scores, no national rankings, and that’s enshrined in law.”

In Norway, young people have the right to participate in safe and secure training environments without “pressure or exploitation” under the Children’s Rights in Sports framework.

Children wearing helmets and bibs with numbers ride bikes while parents run alongside them.

Initial guidelines were introduced in 1976, with provisions based on a United Nations convention on the rights of children, adopted in 2007 (also updated in 2015 and 2019).

The most recent framework, published in 2019, reports that 93 per cent of Norwegian children and young people participated in organised sports during their childhood. It does not specify whether this participation includes school-related activities.

Comparatively, an estimated 38 per cent (over 1.8 million) Australian children aged 0-14 participate in organised sport-related activity at least once a week outside of school hours, according to 2025 government data.

Worn told SBS News that children can benefit from staying in sport for longer and by sampling a variety of activities:

“Early specialisation seldom leads to adult success, because you can’t really predict adult success prior to maturation, because there are changes in height, weight, strength in bone mass.”

Matti Clements is the director of the Australian Institute of Sport and visited Norway last year, where she witnessed this model first-hand.

“I really loved what they had, a culture of engaging in sport for all the benefits of sport, as an integral part of their community,” Clements told SBS News.

“I actually think belonging to something is important at all levels of sport, inclusive of high-performance.”

A young girl in a blue netball dress holds a netball in her right hand on the court. There are three other players around her.

She believes that Australia can learn a lesson or two from Norway’s approach:

“There seems to be an increasing focus that young people engage — or should be engaging in sport — because it’s a pathway to elite sport … going to an Olympic, Paralympic or Commonwealth Games should not be the reason you do it,” she told SBS News.

Clements said that intensive training schedules can lead to burnout, physical and psychological damage or children stopping sport altogether. She alleged that decentring competition can create future sporting champions:

For every Tiger Woods, there’s probably 100 kids that could have gone on to do great things at the elite level but dropped out because Mum and Dad were pressuring them too much.

“We focus on these one-off stories, and decide that is the only way to perform.”

What lessons can Australia learn?

In February, Norwegians also made history at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

Norway won the 2026 Winter Games, taking home 41 medals, including 18 gold medals — the most ever won by a single nation.

Carol Maher is a professor of population and digital health at Adelaide University and said that achievement stands as a testament to the success of Norway’s model.

“It kind of shows that you can protect children from excessive pressure and still produce really elite athletes,” Maher told SBS News.

A woman wears a red jumpsuit, a helmet and goggles while skiing. She soars high in the sky during a jump.

However, she believes it would be difficult for Australia to implement Norway’s youth sports model in its entirety.

“It would be challenging for Australia to directly emulate it because our sports landscape is different.”

When it comes to scoring matches, Maher said “the reality is children tend to know, they’ll keep track of the scores themselves, even if it’s not officially scored.”

Earlier this year, the Australian Institute of Sport released landmark guidelines on elite youth athletes, which provide recommendations on child safety and compliance across high-performance environments.

Worn from Federation University said while a changing approach to youth sport could be possible within clubs or associations, he believes competitiveness is firmly ingrained into Australian sporting culture:

“This is not a popular take, but we absolutely under-perform in football. I mean we have a large population … far bigger than Norway, far bigger than Paraguay and these nations are doing really well.”

However, there are some parallels in Australia with the Norwegian system. Junior football in Australia up to Under 12s is played in a “non-competitive” environment and involves “small-sided games” ranging from four-a-side to nine-a-side as the age groups progress. No match results are published and there are no points tables.

In junior Aussie rules, there are no match points recorded or competition ladders in age groups up to Under 11s.

Worn said New Zealand is starting to take a similar approach to Norway when it comes to youth sport. He attributed this change to the country’s smaller population size.

“If you’re somewhere, we’ll take Brazil for example … there’s a much bigger pool to pull from. So, if you discard a talented player, there are 10 more to replace them.

“But when the population is really small, you can’t do that, you have to allow multiple re-entry points. So, often it is tied to necessity.”

Rahm Emanuel Criticizes Netanyahu in Tel Aviv Speech Amid Shifting American Political Sentiments Toward Israel

WASHINGTON – In a striking political move, Rahm Emanuel, who is being watched as a potential Democratic presidential contender, is set to deliver a stern critique of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a speech in Tel Aviv this week. Emanuel, who has a long-standing reputation as a supporter of Israel, plans to tell his audience that the strong ties between the United States and Israel are “at a crossroads.”

According to prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press, Emanuel will assert on Wednesday at Tel Aviv University, “It cannot stand or survive as it has been.” He underscores the need for “significant changes and a new direction” to preserve and strengthen bilateral relations.

This anticipated speech by a central figure in the Democratic Party’s moderate faction is indicative of a broader shift in party lines, illustrating the growing distance from their historical support for Israel.

Recent findings from a survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research reveal that about 58% of Democrats feel that the U.S. has been “too supportive” of Israel, increasing from 45% at the start of 2024. Additionally, approximately half of the Democratic respondents believe that Israel’s actions in Gaza amount to genocide against Palestinians, an accusation that has been firmly denied by both Israel and the U.S. government despite being echoed by some human rights groups.

In his propositions, Emanuel is expected to advocate for sanctions against Israelis who engage in violence against Palestinian civilians and their properties, as well as against companies and banks that facilitate settlements deemed illegal by much of the international community. Moreover, he is pushing for an end to U.S. financial assistance to Israel’s military budget, insisting that Israel should purchase American arms under the same financial conditions and regulatory obligations as other trusted allies who respect U.S. laws.

In addition, Emanuel will blame Netanyahu for driving Israel to a “dead end,” emboldened by poor decisions from American leaders.

“For too long, American policy toward Israel operated under the assumption that the best thing Washington could do for Jerusalem was to blindly and silently stand behind your government, without conditions, without demands, and without consequences when we disagreed,” he will say. “That has been our mistake. Unconditional support has produced a prime minister who has presumed that his strategic interests would incur no cost if he ignored America’s concerns.”

There’s little precedent for an American with presidential ambitions to travel to another country, much less one as fraught as Israel, to deliver such a stinging rebuke of its political leadership. Centrist figures like Emanuel have been more reluctant than Democrats’ progressive base to question longtime U.S. support for Israel in recent years.

How will Netanyahu react?

His remarks could prompt a similarly fiery response from Netanyahu, who famously once called Emanuel, who had ambitions of being the first Jewish speaker of the U.S. House, a “self-hating Jew.” Netanyahu faces his own battle for reelection in October, and the veteran leader may try to use a confrontation with Emanuel for political gain by appearing to stand strong in the face of international criticism.

But for possible Democratic presidential contenders gauging how to address the fallout from Israel’s war in Gaza and Netanyahu’s perceived tilt toward the Republican Party, led by President Donald Trump, the speech represents an especially frontal strategy. The war has disrupted political coalitions in both major political parties in the U.S., with younger voters recoiling at Israel’s approach to the conflict pressing American leaders to take a tougher stand. The issue has roiled some Democratic congressional primaries this year and could continue to be a dividing line in the contest for the party’s presidential nomination in 2028.

Castigating Netanyahu for doing little to advance diplomatic efforts to end the war, Emanuel will note that “support for Israel is plummeting around the world.”

“You’ve lost Europe,” he will say. “Your scientists face exclusion from international research networks. Your artists and academics are shut out of exhibits and conferences.”

Support for Israel wanes

While Netanyahu has forged generally strong ties with Trump and the Republican Party, Israel’s support among Democrats has slipped in recent years. But in portraying Israel as increasingly isolated, Emanuel’s comments have echoes of recent remarks from Vice President JD Vance, a sign of how criticism of the country is taking hold in both parties. Speaking recently from the White House briefing room as the U.S. worked to close a deal to end the war with Iran, Vance said Trump was “the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time.”

For all his tough words, Emanuel, who is Jewish and whose father was born in Jerusalem, will offer notes of sympathy and understanding. He acknowledged the toll of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in which Hamas-led militants launched air and ground strikes on Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages. He noted disappointments from previous rounds of peace talks with Palestinian leaders.

“But even while acknowledging that history, the path forward cannot be held hostage to a past defined exclusively by recriminations,” he will say.

He will call the two-state solution “discredited” and instead push for a “23-state solution” that includes Israel, the Palestinians and the 21 other members of the Arab League in a peace deal.

“The 21 Arab nations that have exploited Palestinian rights as a slogan for decades now need to roll up their sleeves and stand up a governing authority capable of accepting the historic Jewish connection to this land,” he will say.

While no prominent Democrat has formally entered the 2028 contest, that could change soon after the November midterms with a field that could ultimately swell into the dozens. Few have been as open about their intentions as Emanuel, a former White House chief of staff, congressman, Chicago mayor and U.S. ambassador who has spent much of the past three decades holding one public office or another. Absent such a post now, he’s gained attention by releasing a string of policy proposals, biking through the early voting state of New Hampshire, appearing on podcasts and stepping up his social media presence.

Harrowing Tale of Alleged Accidental Shooting Unravels: Husband Admits to Killing Wife

Inset: Stephen Ray Lang (Harrison County Sheriff’s Department). Background: The area in Indiana where Lang allegedly shot and killed his wife (Google Maps).

An Indiana husband, aged 32, finds himself tangled in a tragic narrative after allegedly telling authorities that a fatal shooting of his wife was accidental. The incident left her with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest in their home.

Following the incident, Stephen Ray Lang was apprehended on Thursday night. He now faces charges including murder, domestic battery, intimidation, and pointing a firearm, as announced by the authorities.

The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department reported that Stephen Ray Lang called 911 to report the incident as an “accidental gunshot.” Responding to the call just before 10 p.m., deputies arrived at the family’s residence located on Hillcrest Drive in Mauckport, around 140 miles from Indianapolis.

Once there, first responders discovered Sara Lang suffering from a chest wound. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a somber turn of events.

Detectives identified a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun as the weapon used in the shooting. Investigators have not disclosed what evidence led them to conclude Lang should face a murder charge despite his claim that the shooting was accidental.

Two children — a 14-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl — were inside the residence when the shooting took place, according to investigators.

Additional details about what allegedly happened before the fatal shot came from Stephen Lang’s own relatives, who spoke with Louisville, Kentucky, ABC affiliate WLKY.

Stephen Lang’s sister, Sarah Shireman, said the shooting happened after an argument between Sara Lang and the teenage boy. She claimed her brother intervened during the dispute and pulled out a handgun.

“With all the bickering going back and forth, I think he was literally just trying to get them to be quiet, and everybody just calm down,” Shireman told the station.

Shireman acknowledged that her brother had a history of displaying a firearm during arguments to intimidate people, including during an altercation with her several months earlier.

“He pulled it out because he thinks he was hot stuff,” she said. “I will admit he acted like he was going to do something with me and him when we got into a fight a couple months ago, but it didn’t work out for him.”

Shireman maintained that despite those encounters, she does not believe her brother intentionally killed his wife.

“My brother is not a killer. My brother is the sweetest,” she said. “He is the sweetest person ever and would do anything to help anybody.”

Speaking of the deadly incident, Stephen Lang’s father reportedly said “it was a simple, little, stupid argument that got out of hand.”

The Harrison County Coroner’s Office is scheduled to perform an autopsy as detectives continue investigating the circumstances of the shooting.

Florida Senior Defends Against Alligator with Quick-Thinking Fishing Pole Move

0

This alligator picked the wrong senior citizen to tangle with.

Faced with an unexpected alligator attack, a resourceful fisherman in Florida narrowly avoided disaster by pressing his thumb into the reptile’s eye before vigorously striking its head with his fishing rod.

On July 3, James Grayson McMicken, aged 71, set out for an evening of peaceful fishing with his bulldog along the canal behind his residence in North Fort Myers, only to be ambushed after just one cast.

“As I started to reel in the line, it suddenly leapt out from the water and clamped onto me,” McMicken recounted to KGNS News.

The alligator latched onto his right leg and dragged him into the canal, leaving him with mere moments to act.

Fortunately for McMicken, and unfortunately for the alligator, the angler was an experienced gator hunter, which gave him the instincts he needed to thwart the attack.

“He rolled me down off the bank into the water. I stuck my thumb in one eye, and I just took that fishing pole and jabbed him in that other eye and jabbed him and jabbed him and jabbed him. It seemed like forever, but it wasn’t that long. But then, he turned loose,” he told the outlet.

“I’ve always heard that if you’ve got no other choice, get them eyes, and that’s what got him off of me.”

With the threat neutralized, McMicken, badly bleeding from deep bite wounds on his right leg, now had to figure out how to make it home.

He called to the bulldog, who stood in place so her owner could use her as leverage to get to his feet before hobbling home.

His wife cleaned his wounds and he collapsed in his chair, exhausted, before his family rushed him to a local hospital, where he received stitches and staples on both sides of his mangled leg.

McMicken’s brush with death made him a bit of a celebrity while he was in the hospital.

“All the nurses on the floor had to come by and go, ‘Wow, you did what?’” he said. “I’m going to do everything I can not to die. No gator is going to run me off.”

Now recovering at home and preparing to start physical therapy, McMicken says the close encounter won’t deter him from his favorite hobby, though he told the outlet he would be keeping his eyes peeled from now on when casting his reel from the shore of the canal.

The close-call follows a pair of recent gator attacks in Florida, including one in which 31-year-old Brittany Clark was fatally mauled by a 12-foot alligator while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River with her boyfriend June 27.

That same day, a Pennsylvania boy lost a hand in a savage alligator attack while on a fishing vacation with his family at Nelson’s Fish Camp in Marion County, Florida.

Alligator attacks are rare in the Sunshine State, despite a population of more than one million of the reptiles, and most bodies of fresh water in the state presumed to contain the creatures.

Florida Influencer and Spouse Face Charges for Allegedly Abandoning Children During Night Out

Over the Fourth of July weekend, a real estate entrepreneur from Florida, who also maintains a strong presence as a social media influencer, and her spouse found themselves in legal trouble. They were apprehended after allegedly leaving two small children unattended in a hotel room at a Key Largo resort while they enjoyed drinks by the pool, as reported by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The individuals, identified as Allison Sirica Cannella, aged 40, and Brian Nicholas Cannella, aged 43, who both reside in Delray Beach, are facing serious charges. According to jail records, each has been charged with two felony counts for child neglect.

The incident took place at the Reefhouse Resort & Marina in Key Largo, prompting deputies to respond around 1:45 p.m. on a Saturday. Staff from the hotel contacted authorities after discovering a room with a baby crying continuously without adult supervision.

Within the hotel room, law enforcement found two young children left alone in cribs. The investigation revealed that resort staff had tracked down the Cannellas at the pool area, where the couple had been partaking in alcoholic beverages.

Security camera footage, witness statements and other evidence indicated the children had been left unattended for approximately 40 minutes to one hour, investigators said.

The Florida Department of Children and Families was notified, and the children were released into the custody of a family friend until child welfare officials arrived. Authorities said neither child suffered serious injuries.

Both Cannellas were arrested and booked into the Monroe County Jail. Their first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 1.

The arrest stands in stark contrast to Allison Cannella’s public image, which centers on luxury real estate investing, home renovation and social media.

The profile also links to Exhale Vacation Rentals and an online storefront featuring products from her renovation and design projects.

Cannella also was featured in “Atlantic Ave Magazine,” which highlighted her renovation of luxury Florida vacation rental properties. The publication detailed one waterfront investment project that more than doubled its annual rental revenue after an extensive redesign.

Her employer’s online biography says Cannella has more than 15 years of real estate and legal experience and has worked on more than $25 billion in real estate and corporate transactions. She serves as senior vice president and general counsel and previously practiced commercial real estate law.

News Media reached out to Allison Cannella, the company where she is employed, Exhale Vacation Rentals and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for additional comment but did not immediately receive responses.

Revealed: Alex Rodriguez’s White Party Mystery Woman Steals the Spotlight

0

The enigmatic brunette seen in a romantic moment with New York Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez has been identified.

The former Yankees star, now 50 years old, was noted sharing an intimate moment with the then-unnamed woman during Michael Rubin’s exclusive White Party in The Hamptons last week.

This affectionate encounter came shortly after Rodriguez’s split from fitness coach Jaclyn Cordeiro, sparking widespread discussion.

It seems the Major League Baseball icon has a clear preference, as it’s been disclosed that his new romantic interest comes from the same professional circle.

According to the New York Post, Rodriguez is currently linked with Meghan Hayden, a private fitness coach, who is at the center of the recent buzz.

‘They are dating. It’s new. She’s a really nice person from a great family,’ an insider told the outlet.

The couple are said to have arrived at the Gatsby-esque soiree at Rubin’s $50million mansion near Bridgehampton, Long Island, with a group of friends.

However, Rodriguez and Hayden ‘definitely looked coupled up’ with his friends redirecting the flirtatious advances of other women away from the former baseball star.

Hayden is a former Division I athlete and University of Miami graduate, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology, according to her website, ‘Take Off With Meg.’

In addition to coaching her clients, the fitness instructor also models for brands such as Under Armour and Athleta.

Rodriguez, who previously enjoyed a high-profile romance with Jennifer Lopez, was caught locking lips with Hayden during the exclusive White Party.

In a passionate display, the couple were seen sharing a romantic kiss and chatting during the celebrations at Rubin’s 8,100-sq-feet Hamptons home.

Rodriguez leaned in as Hayden, who wore a silky halter backless mini dress, wrapped her hand around the back of his head.

The raunchy rendezvous comes six weeks after the former baseball star and his ex-girlfriend Cordeiro, 46, called it quits.

The couple, who had been together for over three years, reportedly chose to go their separate ways after a long period of reflection

‘To clarify, Alex and I are currently taking some time apart but there continues to be mutual love, care, and deep respect between us and for our families,’ Cordeiro told TMZ.

‘We remain supportive of one another, and there is absolutely no animosity, drama, or negative story here,’ she added. ‘I’m also navigating a serious health matter involving a family member at this time, so my focus is understandably there.

‘Alex and I continue to be very close, and out of respect for everyone involved especially our daughters and loved ones I’d kindly ask that any reporting reflects the compassion and privacy this situation deserves.’

Insiders close to the New York Yankees legend revealed that the couple had actually been quietly living separate lives for about two months before the news broke.

Cordeiro is also reportedly navigating a serious health matter involving a close family member, which has naturally shifted her personal focus away from the relationship.

The couple were first romantically linked back in October 2022 before making their relationship Instagram official during a festive family trip that winter.

They later made their first major public appearance together at an NBA game in January 2023, quickly becoming a staple of the celebrity sports scene.

Throughout their three-year romance, the pair frequently shared glimpses of their blended families, often posing alongside their respective daughters on social media.

Marco Rubio’s Insightful Response to Balogun’s Red Card Reversal by FIFA

0

Secretary of State Marco Rubio faced an unexpected query on Monday morning but seemed ready with a response.

Entering a meeting with Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna at the State Department, Rubio was approached by a reporter during the introductory handshake between the officials.

“Mr. Secretary, what’s your reaction to FIFA reversing the red card suspension after pressure?” questioned an off-camera voice.

Contrary to some reports, there was no external pressure involved. Earlier, President Trump revealed in an Oval Office session that he contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the red card that sidelined Folarin Balogun, a key player for the U.S. Men’s National Team, during a pivotal World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Balogun faced suspension from playing in the next round against Belgium due to the card. Though Trump believed the decision was flawed and warranted review, Infantino made it clear that FIFA’s independent judicial bodies hold authority in such matters and final decisions are beyond his purview.

Gainesville Resident Receives 15-Year Prison Term Following Guilty Plea to 20 Child Pornography Offenses

Staff report

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a recent court decision, 30-year-old Alexander William Callison has been sentenced to a 15-year prison term, followed by 10 years under sexual offender supervision, after submitting a plea of nolo contendere regarding 20 separate child pornography charges.

Callison’s initial arrest took place on June 4, 2025, following a CyberTip that traced a Kik account linked to 651 images and videos. Remarkably, 591 of these visual files depicted a similar individual—described as a lean, muscular Caucasian male with tattoos, featuring a cross on his chest and an additional marking on his forearm.

Further investigations revealed another CyberTip comprising conversations with other Kik users who claimed to be underage. Callison was found to have sent videos of a sexual nature after learning of their purported ages, and the exchanges reportedly included sixteen occasions where he solicited inappropriate content from these individuals.

The phone number used for establishing the initial Kik account was directly connected to Callison. This same number was tied to the IP address utilized for content uploads found in the second CyberTip, further disclosing Callison’s involvement.

On June 5, 2026, Callison entered a plea of nolo contendere to 10 counts of using a computer to solicit a minor, five counts of transmission of material harmful to minors, two counts of possession of child pornography, and three counts of directing or promoting a sexual performance by a child.

Judge Susanne Wilson Bullard sentenced him to three concurrent sentences of 15 years in prison for the three counts of directing or promoting a sexual performance by a child, and she added 10 concurrent sentences of five years of sex offender probation for using a computer to solicit a minor, followed by an additional seven concurrent sentences of five years of sex offender probation on the remaining charges. Callison will be designated as a sexual offender with lifetime registration obligations.

Callison has been held in the Alachua County Jail since his original arrest and will be credited 370 days toward the prison sentence.

Dave Portnoy Criticizes USMNT Following Belgium’s Commanding World Cup Win

0

Dave Portnoy unleashed a fiery, expletive-laden tirade online, slamming the US Men’s National Team for what he described as their “pathetic” performance in the crushing defeat to Belgium on Monday night.

“The United States delivered an embarrassing effort. The bright lights overwhelmed US soccer, and the stage was simply too grand,” Portnoy expressed on platform X following Belgium’s commanding 4-1 win in Seattle.

In a self-recorded video, the Barstool Sports chief boldly stripped off his USA soccer attire in a display of frustration, targeting several players shortly after the game concluded.

“We’re a complete mess. That entire match was a fiasco. If you want us to cheer for our team, how about having a goalkeeper who doesn’t just gift goals by carelessly kicking the ground and handing them to the opponents?” Portnoy remarked, singling out goalkeeper Matt Freese.

The American goalkeeper’s failed attempt to clear the ball outside the penalty area resulted in a turnover, allowing Belgium to seize the opportunity and score, making it 3-1 just 12 minutes into the latter half of the match.

“If we’re gonna create international incidents, we gotta stop having goalies who don’t know what they’re doing and a defense getting thrown around like f–king Christmas trees.

The heated Portnoy called for a draft for soccer to get better players if America was gonna keep getting into “international incidents,” after US officials got involved with the World Cup officiating to have Folarin Balogun’s one-game ban overturned.

“Listen if we are gonna keep making an international incident in FIFA and Trump’s gonna bully them and s–t and everyone’s gonna be like the angry Americans, then we’re gonna have to start instituting a draft in soccer,” Portnoy said. “Hey LeBron, no offense, you’re going to play f–king soccer and all these other great athletes that we got, you got to go play soccer.”

Portnoy called for better players to make up the American squad, which has four years to train before the next World Cup.

“These are country club D-tier athletes we got out here,” he said. “Again, I’m fine if we’re gonna sit on the sidelines and just be like ‘soccer, cool, cool.’”

The hot-tempered entrepreneur showed some sportsmanship to congratulate Belgium for making it to the quarterfinal match against Spain on Friday.

“As a proud American let me be the first to congratulate Belgium. You guys were the far superior team,” he wrote. “Granted I can’t tell if you guys are any good cause we are so pathetic but you beat us fair and square. Now in hindsight doesn’t all the bellyaching about Balogun playing seem silly?”

USA fans were quick to rip the team following the embarrassing loss.

“Soccer lost more than the US did with this loss. This World Cup was supposed to turn American fans on to soccer with a much hyped Team USA. Now anytime a casual American fan sees a soccer game they will just be reminded of that keystone cops goal Freese gave up. They will just turn it off. That game was a disaster for both the US and for soccer,” one person wrote.

“That was an embarrassing display! Pulisic is a fraud and the defense is an absolute joke!” another used added.
