Trump Advocates for Oil Flow Amidst US-Iran Peace Deal: Prospects for Australian Economic Relief Explored

0

IN BRIEF

  • Experts say if the peace deal provides enduring stability, it could avert the worst potential economic impacts of the conflict.
  • The deal is unlikely to influence the Reserve Bank’s next interest rates decision on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump has announced a peace agreement with Iran, sparking optimism for relief in global energy markets and potentially reducing inflationary pressures.

Trump shared the news on his Truth Social platform on Monday, stating, “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

The agreement, expected to be officially signed in Switzerland on Friday, includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz. This vital shipping lane facilitates approximately 20% of the world’s oil transportation.

Although this development might have a limited direct impact on Australia, experts suggest it underscores the interconnected nature of global energy and shipping markets.

Analysts remain cautious, noting that while reduced tensions could ease some pressures on fuel prices, the real economic benefits for Australians hinge on the durability of the agreement and the speed at which normal trade resumes.

What does a peace deal mean for Australian households?

While Australia does not directly import oil from Iran, households are not insulated from instability in the Middle East.

Professor Tim Harcourt, chief economist at the University of Technology Sydney, told SBS News that energy markets remained globally connected and disruptions quickly flowed across borders.

“Oil prices set world markets and flow through right around the world,” he said.

Harcourt said the Strait of Hormuz was one of several globally significant trade corridors and disruptions had consequences extending well beyond energy.

“When you affect those trade routes, you see delays but also higher prices because of supply shortages.”

Professor Ben Fahimnia, chair of supply chain management at the University of Sydney, said markets respond not only to actual disruptions but also to expectations about future risk.

“The reported easing of tensions and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz will place some downward pressure on global oil prices, assuming the agreement holds and markets gain confidence that major supply disruptions are less likely.

“However, energy markets react not only to actual disruptions but also to perceived risks, so some volatility may remain in the short term.”

Fahimnia said disruptions in shipping routes could eventually flow through to households via freight, supermarket prices, transport costs and business operating expenses, but the relief wouldn’t be imminent.

Professor Richard Holden, vice chancellor’s professorial fellow and chief economist at UNSW Sydney, said oil remained globally priced regardless of where Australia sourced supply.

“When supply is constrained, oil goes up, and that becomes an input into fuel prices Australians pay at the bowser.”

When could peace perks flow through to Australia?

Economists say benefits from easing energy prices are unlikely to be immediate, and may be shaped as much by domestic settings as global developments.

But Harcourt said Australians could potentially begin noticing changes within weeks rather than days, though broader cost-of-living effects would likely take longer.

Changes in global oil prices typically take time to move through supply chains before appearing in household budgets, flowing first through wholesale fuel markets, freight costs and business expenses before affecting consumer prices.

Fahimnia said even if oil prices decline, Australians were unlikely to see immediate changes because of existing inventories, wholesale contracts and retail pricing cycles.

But economists also cautioned against assuming lower oil prices automatically translate into meaningfully cheaper fuel, and suggested any relief from lower energy prices may first appear through slower price growth, rather than households suddenly paying significantly less than they already are.

Domestic policy complicates the picture

The federal government has indicated it will not extend its temporary fuel excise reduction beyond 30 June, meaning motorists are expected to face higher fuel costs as tax settings return to normal.

The fuel excise was temporarily halved by the government earlier this year in response to soaring global oil prices caused by the war, slashing 26 cents per litre.

The measure cost more than $2.5 billion over three months and helped ease headline inflation, but commentators remain divided over whether extending it would have delivered longer-term relief or contributed to inflation and higher mortgage pressures.

AMP chief economist Shane Oliver said that could offset some of the relief households might otherwise expect from softer oil prices, and said that petrol prices are currently at levels seen before the conflict escalated earlier this year.

“What this [peace deal] potentially does is head off another spike rather than open the door to substantially lower prices,” Oliver said.

Oliver suggested Australians may see relief through fuel and transport costs before broader effects emerge elsewhere.

“If that unwinds, eventually that can take some pressure off grocery prices and airfares,” he said.

Holden urged caution, saying the conflict had already left long-lasting effects on global energy markets, with countries drawing down reserves and reassessing energy security.

“There’s going to be really strong ongoing demand for liquid fuels.”

Holden said reopening shipping routes could remove uncertainty and place modest downward pressure on prices, but warned households should not expect a return to significantly lower costs.

“I don’t think Australians should expect a lot out of it other than it’s obviously good to stop the extra damage being done and reduce uncertainty,” he said.

Could it influence Tuesday’s RBA decision?

Economists say the more relevant question is not whether the agreement changes Tuesday’s Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) decision on the cash rate, but whether it changes the outlook policymakers are watching.

Fahimnia said it was unlikely the RBA, which is widely expected to keep rates on hold on Tuesday, would place significant weight on a single geopolitical development in isolation.

“The RBA generally focuses on medium-term inflation trends and broader economic conditions.

“If lower energy prices were sustained over a longer period and materially influenced inflation expectations, they would certainly become relevant to the Bank’s outlook.”

Holden agreed lower oil prices should not be interpreted as automatically leading to lower interest rates and said fuel movements could affect headline inflation, but the RBA focused more heavily on underlying inflation, which removes the biggest price swings and volatility.

“There might be some effect on the RBA’s thinking, but I don’t think there will be a mechanical effect on what they do,” he said.

Oliver similarly argued that lower energy prices may reduce one source of inflation pressure, but Australia still faced broader challenges, including underlying inflation and capacity constraints.

The economic effects Australians may notice first

While fuel prices have dominated much of the public discussion around the conflict, economists say the broader economic effects may ultimately prove more significant.

Oliver said one of the less visible consequences of the war had been pressure on business and consumer confidence.

He said concerns about disruption, weaker growth and supply constraints had also weighed on economic sentiment.

If shipping routes reopen and supply chains start functioning more normally, experts say that could reduce downside risks facing growth and employment, but would not necessarily translate into immediate cost-of-living relief.

Instead, economists say any benefits are more likely to emerge gradually, through fewer supply disruptions, steadier prices and reduced pressure on businesses.

Harcourt said markets often respond to expectations before those changes become visible in household budgets.

“If peace is lasting then confidence will probably start improving,” he said.

Albanese and Wong welcome peace

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong welcomed moves to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and urged all parties to pursue lasting stability.

“While full recovery will take time, restoring this vital trade corridor is essential to easing pressure on energy prices and economies, including in our region,” they said in a joint statement.

They also said Iran must address concerns surrounding its nuclear program and regional security and encouraged all parties to pursue a durable peace through diplomacy.

What if the war had continued?

Experts said understanding the significance of the agreement also meant considering the alternative.

Oliver argued that if the agreement holds and translates into sustained stability, the largest economic effects of the conflict may never become visible precisely because escalation had been avoided.

One of the scenarios economists had been watching most closely was a more prolonged disruption to the Strait of Hormuz, which would have further constrained global oil supply and increased pressure across fuel, freight and consumer markets.

Holden noted countries had already drawn down fuel reserves and demand remained elevated as governments rebuilt stockpiles.

Why peace may not mean the crisis is over

Economists cautioned that any meaningful economic benefits would depend on whether the agreement proves durable.

Fahimnia also said recent events have highlighted a broader lesson for Australia.

“While any easing of tensions is welcome, it would be premature to assume geopolitical risks have disappeared,” he said.

“The underlying drivers of instability remain, and there is no guarantee that the current peace arrangement will prove permanent.”

He said this should be viewed as an opportunity for Australia to strengthen resilience rather than relax preparedness.

“Building these capabilities during periods of relative stability is far easier than trying to create them during a crisis.”

For Australians, economists said the agreement may not produce dramatic changes at the bowser, but avoiding a more severe downside could prove significant.

DCLM Daily Manna 16 June 2026 — Seeking Christ for Wrong Reasons

DCLM Daily Manna 16 June 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Seeking Christ for Wrong Reasons

TOPIC: Seeking Christ for Wrong Reasons (DCLM Daily Manna 16 June 2026)

KEY VERSE: And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him – Luke 23:8

TEXT: Luke 23:1-12 (KJV)

1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.

11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

D r. A. W. Tozer, in his book, The Pursuit of God, wrote, ”The modern scientist has lost God amidst the wonders of His world; we Christians are in real danger of losing God amidst the wonders of His word.” Many people who know about Christ have failed to recognise him as the Saviour of the world.

In our text, the Jewish religious leaders wanted Jesus crucified based on trumped-up charges. Pilate, who was the judge, pronounced Christ guiltless but treated Him as a tool to pacify the Jews and mend his broken relationship with Herod. On his part, Herod was anxious to see Christ only as a miracle worker. Like multitudes today, he was a curious seeker eager to observe supernatural signs and wonders.

Many people still come to Christ for reasons less than why He came into the world: to seek and save the lost. Some see Christ in the mould of a Father Christmas, who merely supplies their needs, without first seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness. No wonder the prayers for promotion, healing, deliverance, material supply, and victory over enemies usually echo louder than the prayer of repentance in churches of today. Some attend church services for emotional experiences or simply to be in the right social or political circle. Others, like Governor Felix, are eager to discuss religious matters but postpone their salvation to a convenient time that may never come.

Let us remember that salvation from sin and its consequences should be the primary reason for seeking Christ. Other benefits are mere icing on the cake.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Smart people, like Zacchaeus, seek Christ for the greatest miracle – the salvation of their soul

Illini’s Koskondy Sets Sights Higher After Impressive Fifth-Place NCAA Finish

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois senior Jordan Koskondy has made remarkable strides in hammer throwing since she took up the sport in her final year of high school. Her dedication paid off with a stellar fifth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Koskondy secured her first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships following an impressive junior year. During that season, she claimed fourth place at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Competing in Oregon, Koskondy exceeded her own expectations by achieving a personal best throw of 69.24 meters. This remarkable feat not only earned her a fifth-place finish but also ranked as the second-best throw in the history of the program, securing her All-American honors.

“Honestly, I’m still on cloud nine from the nationals,” Koskondy admitted. “I’ve been consistently throwing 66 and 67 meters this season, so making such a big leap was immensely satisfying.”

Looking ahead, Koskondy plans to return to Champaign-Urbana in July to begin preparations for her senior season. She is eager to build on her success and has set high aspirations for her performance in the ring.

“Starting off with how I finished this last season is something that I’m going to shoot for, so being able to start that building block from how I ended with my best mark and indoor and then my last mark during nationals as well as for something that I want to build off of,” said Koskondy.

The Illini finished eighth in the women’s team standings.

Rhapsody Of Realities 16 June 2026: Set Your Affection On Him

Rhapsody Of Realities 16 June 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Set Your Affection On Him

TOPIC: Set Your Affection On Him (Rhapsody of Realities 16 June 2026)

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him (1 John 2:15).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

The Spirit, through the Apostle John, gives a clear and uncompromising instruction that must be understood in its full weight and implication: love not the world. This is a direct call to absolute separation in affection and alignment from the things of this world.

The world, in this context, isn’t the physical earth or the people in it but the godless system of the world that’s governed by the senses, driven by lust, sustained by pride, and opposed to God’s divine will and purpose.

It brings to mind the profound admonition of the Spirit in Colossians 3:1-2, “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” Your love should be on the Father; your affection should be set on heavenly realities and not on the things of this world.

Read again the latter part of our opening verse; it says, “If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” It shows that the issue isn’t merely the external association or relationship with the world but internal affection. This is why the example of Demas in 2 Timothy 4 is so instructive.

In Paul’s letter to Philemon, Demas was listed among Paul’s fellow labourers and companions in ministry, a witness of divine power. Yet, in 2 Timothy 4:10, Paul declares, “…Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world….” Demas’ detour from the work of the ministry was a result of his affection; he had loved this present world.

Worldliness, therefore, is not first a matter of conduct but of inclination. It draws, it appeals, and presents alternatives, and over time, it produces separation from one’s calling and divine purpose. But as a Christian, you’re crucified to the world, and the world is crucified to you: “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Galatians 6:14).

Therefore, don’t think like the world or live by its standards. Love the Lord wholly and truly, and live in the consciousness of your oneness with Him and separation unto Him. Let His Word guide your life. Let your love for Him compel and constrain you at all times (2 Corinthians 5:14-15).

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the light of your Word that aligns my heart with your will. My affections are set on you, and I walk in the consciousness of my dominion over the systems of this world. I live unto you, to fulfil your call and destiny for my life, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Why These A-List Celebrities Snubbed the President’s Exclusive UFC Event Invite

0

On Sunday, a large crowd gathered at the White House for a unique birthday celebration organized by President Donald Trump, featuring a UFC event. However, the occasion was marked by the noticeable absence of several top-tier celebrities who declined their invitations.

UFC President Dana White disclosed to TIME Magazine in the previous month that he had reached out to notable figures such as Adam Sandler, Guy Ritchie, Tom Brady, Jared Leto, Mario Lopez, Jason Statham, and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson with invites to the exclusive Freedom 250 event.

Despite these high-profile invitations, none of the mentioned celebrities made an appearance at the gathering.

Nevertheless, the event did not lack star power entirely, as other prominent supporters of President Trump were present to enjoy the fights on the South Lawn.

Among the attendees were tech mogul Mark Zuckerberg, NHL players Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, comedians Tony Hinchcliffe and Shane Gillis, as well as social media influencer Logan Paul.

Country singer Zac Brown even performed The Star-Spangled Banner, moments before a dozen jets flew overhead as AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ blared.

There were also some surprise guests, including Poland’s right-wing president Karol Nawrocki and British heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury, who was pictured wearing a ‘Trump for prime minister’ hat.

‘It’s been a long time, but boy oh boy am I happy to be here for this historic event. Freedom, at the White House, and it’s Donald Trump’s birthday,’ Fury told Paramount+ announcer Jon Anik.

Of the 4,300 seats available for spectators, 1,200 were reserved for active-duty service members from various branches of the armed forces, as the event was used to promote a number of charities benefiting both veterans and 9/11 heroes.

US Navy veteran Royce Williams, who fought in the Korean War and shot down four Soviet fighter jets, was also given an honor as he escorted fighter Michael Chandler into the Octagon for his bout against Mauricio Ruffy – who wound up defeating him with a TKO in the first round.

Among the crowd were many top White House officials who made grand entrances to the event – including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

Vice President JD Vance, House Speaker Mike Johnson and FBI director Kash Patel – who brought his country singer girlfriend Alexis Wilkins – were also seen enjoying the spectacle.

Homeland Security adviser Stephen Miller was joined by his wife, Katie, just 11 days after she gave birth to the couple’s fourth child.

Members of the Trump family got some of the best seats in the house, with Barron perched right behind his mother and father.

Melania’s father, Viktor Knavs, attended the celebration and was positioned in the audience close to his daughter.

Other Trump family members who gathered for the celebration were Ivanka Trump, her husband Jared Kushner, their sons Joseph and Theo Kushner, as well as Donald Trump Jr, his new wife, Bettina Trump, Eric and Lara Trump with their daughter Carolina, Tiffany Trump, and her husband, Michael Boulos, and granddaughter Kai Trump.

The festivities came to an end when Justin Gaethje won the lightweight championship and thanked the president, who donned a white ‘USA’ cap for the evening’s final event.

Gaethje carried an American flag and thanked military members after his bloodied battle with Georgian-Spaniard Ilia Topuria in the co-main event ended around 1am ET.

Then, it was Trump’s turn to enter the spotlight. The president made his way into the cage alongside First Lady Melania as pyrotechnics sparkled from the structure above, dubbed ‘the Claw’.

Dazzling fireworks lit up the sky above the White House in red, white and blue as chants of ‘USA’ rang out from the crowd to toast Gaethje’s victory.

Trump greeted Gaethje again as he and Melania shook the fighter’s hand. The president then patted Gaethje on the shoulder before engaging the fighter in a lengthy conversation.

When the fight night finally came to a close early Monday morning, the Trump family was seen gathering around Gaethje, with Ivanka’s son, Joseph, holding one of the championship belts.

The family was also seen beaming in a photo Ivanka shared to social media as they circled the commander-in-chief in the Octagon.

Forecasted rain held off for the night, allowing the fight card to get underway shortly after the original scheduled 8pm start.

As the festivities came to an end, many declared the Freedom 250 event a success – with President Trump boasting on his Truth Social page that the night was ‘PERFECT.’

But the night was not without controversy, with fighter Joe Hokit bizarrely telling the crowd, ‘Michelle Obama is a man.’

Another fighter, Sean Strickland, had to be escorted out of the event by US Secret Service and other law enforcement following his mocking comments about Jeffrey Epstein.

First Son Eric Trump also faced backlash on Monday after ‘fake’ leaked messages between him and former fighter Daniel Cormier asking if any of the White House fights were ‘rigged’ went viral.

The controversy started when former fighter Daniel Cormier’s X account posted messages that appeared to be from President Trump’s middle son.

In the supposed correspondence, Eric Trump asked if any of the fighters appearing at the UFC Freedom 250 event on the White House’s South Lawn were injured, or if Cormier planned to place any bets.

It immediately sparked rampant ‘cheating’ concerns on social media.

‘I’m probably going to get a lot of flak for bringing this to light, however I refuse to stay silent,’ Cormier wrote in a caption posted with screengrabs of Eric Trump’s supposed messages.

‘The UFC is a sport that I am deeply passionate about. I will not tolerate this type of insider behavior. Shame on anyone trying to ruin this beautiful event.’

The one-time fighter has since deleted the post and told DC-based journalist Nicholas Ballasy that his account had been hacked.

‘They’re not real,’ Cormier said of the Eric Trump posts. ‘I can’t believe you guys believed that, like, who believes something like that?’

‘I got hacked or something,’ Cormier added, talking to Ballasy as he departed the White House at the conclusion of the UFC event early Monday morning.

The journalist then asked, ‘So you didn’t post it?’

‘Why would I do that?’ Cormier said, getting into his car.

Cormier posted a similar sentiment on his X account.

On his own social media accounts, Eric Trump made clear the messages were bogus.

‘This is completely fake! I have never reached out to Daniel. In fact, this is scary,’ he posted Sunday night as the fights were getting underway.

UFC CEO Dana White now says such a spectacle at the White House will never occur again.

‘It was an amazing experience, this was a one-of-one,’ he said. ‘It will never happen again.’

He explained that the headaches over the weather for a rare outdoors show, the logistics of building the stage on the White House South Lawn and staging events at federal landmarks were logistical nightmares.

Then, there were the soaring costs associated with having an event at the White House.

The UFC boasted of spending $60 million on UFC Freedom 250, which wasn’t expected to turn a profit due to the tickets awarded to service members and the free watch party at the Ellipse abutting the White House’s South Lawn.

Meanwhile, Washington DC, spent an estimated $10 million to $12 million on security for the event. A city spokesman told ESPN that the city does not expect to be reimbursed by the UFC.

‘I can’t afford it,’ White admitted. ‘I’ll never do the Sphere again and we’ll never do this again.’

Tragic BASE Jumping Accident Claims Lives of Famed Extreme Athlete Andy Lewis and Companion

0

Tragedy struck over the weekend in a Utah canyon when a BASE jumping accident claimed the lives of two individuals, including a renowned daredevil who once performed with Madonna during the 2012 Super Bowl halftime show, officials reported.

According to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office in Utah, emergency crews were called to Mineral Bottom, a secluded desert location near the Utah-Colorado border, on Sunday following reports of injuries sustained during a BASE jumping attempt.

Authorities have identified one of the deceased as Andy Lewis, an acclaimed extreme sports athlete celebrated for his prowess in BASE jumping. This high-risk activity involves leaping from a fixed structure, such as a building, bridge, or cliff, and parachuting to the ground.

The ill-fated jump was a tandem one, meaning the two individuals were harnessed together, as detailed in a social media update from Aerial Arts Moab. The acrobatics company lamented the loss, referring to Lewis as both “co-owner and best friend.”

Lewis also founded BASE Jump Moab, a company that provided tandem jumps for novices, pairing them with experienced guides equipped with parachutes. Promotional content from the business features duos stepping off sheer cliff faces, experiencing freefall before their parachutes deploy.

Lewis’ risk-taking knew few bounds

In BASE jumping circles, Lewis had a huge following and a reputation for pushing the envelope – leaping into tighter spaces or deploying his parachute later than his peers would dare, said John McEvoy, a BASE jumping instructor in Twin Falls, Idaho, who has jumped with Lewis.

“He had an incredible level of athleticism and skill that was developed over years of practice,” McEvoy said. “But then he would take an incredible amount of risk.”

Grand County Sheriff Jamison Wiggins confirmed the other person who was killed was Danny Joe Kregle, a 68-year-old father and grandfather who was described by a family member as an accomplished businessman.

“Danny had a wonderful sense of humor and was always looking for ways to make people laugh,” relative Sydney Laverty told The Times-Independent. “One of his greatest joys was performing magic tricks alongside his granddaughter.”

Lewis was also a prominent figure in the niche sports of slacklining and tricklining, which combine elements of high-wire walking with aerial acrobatics – sometimes at perilous heights.

He went from obscure athlete to overnight celebrity when he appeared onstage in Madonna’s 2012 Super Bowl halftime show. Dressed in a Roman toga, Lewis bounced and executed tricks on his inch-wide line like it was a trampoline while Madonna sang behind him.

“My phone actually rang itself to death three days in a row,” Lewis said soon afterward in an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s late night show.

BASE jumping much riskier than skydiving, study shows

Though there’s no official tally of BASE jumping deaths, a list compiled by the website BASEaddict.com shows 540 total fatalities worldwide since 1981 – including 30 people killed last year. Prominent deaths include BASE jumper Dean Potter and his climbing partner, Graham Hunt, who were killed in 2015 while attempting a wingsuit flight in California’s Yosemite National Park.

A study focused on BASE jumping in Norway, published in a medical journal in 2007, estimated that BASE jumping carried risks of injury or death five to eight times greater than skydiving.

Lewis openly acknowledged the sport’s inherent danger.

“It’s weird to think about how many people are dead, because it’s like a normal thing,” Lewis told documentary filmmaker Ella Warnick in an interview published last year.

Tandem BASE jumping carries additional risk because it straps together two people, one of whom generally lacks experience, under a single parachute, McEvoy said. But because they involve novices, they also tend to be the most low-risk, basic types of jumps.

“Within BASE, it’s a very controversial topic,” McEvoy said. “There’s a lot of people who say it’s the stupidest thing in the world and others arguing: `No, we’re giving people the experience of their lives.’”

No one immediately returned phone, text and Facebook messages left Monday for BASE Jump Moab.

Lewis won four straight world championships in competitive slacklining from 2008 through 2011. Lewis set a Guinness World Record for slackline surfing, swaying his feet side to side in a rocking motion that mimics surfing, while keeping his balance above China’s Diaoshuilou waterfall in 2011.

In 2014, he walked a slackline suspended between two hot air balloons more than 4,000 feet above the Nevada desert.

Lewis’ other sport made him an overnight celebrity, thanks to Madonna.

Karmelo Anthony Fan Dismissed Amid Controversy: Backlash Grows Over Verdict Comments

In the wake of Anthony’s conviction and sentencing, his supporters remain vocal about their discontent and concerns.

The court found Anthony guilty and sentenced him to a 35-year imprisonment on Tuesday, June 9. The conviction stems from an incident where Anthony fatally stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, last year.

Supporters of Anthony argue that his actions were in self-defense during the altercation with Metcalf.

One of them is Donna Robinson, a parole supervisor within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The Dallas Morning News reported she made a comment on Facebook that cost her her job.

Addressing comments about the sentencing, she wrote “that Anthony would be protected in prison, adding she didn’t care about the victim’s family’s loss,” according to the outlet.

News Media also reported Howard University professor Stacey Patton wrote an opinion article on her Substack “Dear Jeff Metcalf: Your Son Is Dead Because You Failed to Teach Him That Black Boys Have Boundaries,” which essentially blames the victim for the killing.

Another supporter, W. Burlette Carter, who is a professor emerita of law at George Washington University, made her concerns with the trial public following the verdict.

She made a post on X that said, “Karmelo Anthony was entitled to a jury of his peers. He did not get that. On that ground alone, he is entitled to a new trial. Minorities are not interchangeable. The prosecutor’s reported proffered reasons for striking all black jurors —that they were teachers—appears to be pretext. Anthony needs a new lawyer on appeal and in a new trial.”

Anthony’s trial was made up of jurors who are fellow U.S. citizens — also known as a “jury of one’s peers.” In all criminal prosecutions, the U.S. Constitution says the accused has “the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed.”

News Media has reached out to Howard University, TDCJ, and Burlette Carter for comment.

Trump Administration Considers Dialogues with Anthropic on Revising Foreigner Ban Policy

0

The Trump administration is signaling a willingness to engage in discussions with Anthropic regarding its directive that prohibits foreign access to the company’s advanced AI models, according to information obtained by The Post.

A high-ranking official from the White House, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the internal discussions, indicated that a compromise could potentially be reached through direct negotiations with Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei.

“It’s crucial to prevent cutting-edge models from being misused,” the source familiar with the situation commented. “The focus is on collaborating with Dario to find a solution.”

This statement marks the first hint that the administration might view the recent export-control measure—which required Anthropic to deactivate its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models globally—as an opening for dialogue rather than a definitive ban.

NY Media Criticizes Hakeem Jeffries Over Gas Price Remarks

0

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) once again highlighted his challenges as the Democratic spokesperson during his recent interview on Good Day New York.

During the segment, Jeffries attempted to sway both the hosts and viewers by blaming former President Donald Trump for the surge in gas prices.

This assertion by Jeffries faces two significant issues. Firstly, oil prices have actually been on a downward trend due to ongoing peace talks with Iran. Secondly, with an agreement now on the horizon, it is anticipated that prices will decrease further as shipping operations stabilize.

“It was a reckless war of choice that has obviously cost the American people significantly, particularly as it relates to skyrocketing gas prices in an environment where the cost of living was already too high,” Jeffries said.

This claim from Jeffries has two problems. First, oil prices have already been coming down because of the peace negotiations with Iran. Second, now that a deal is being signed, the prices are likely to drop even more, as shipping returns to normal.

Florida’s Upcoming E-Bike Speed Regulations: What Riders Need to Know

In the latest legislative development from Tallahassee, Florida’s lawmakers have sent a significant bill to Governor Ron DeSantis that could soon impose speed limits on electric bicycles. The legislation, known as SB 382, marks a pivotal step in enhancing safety protocols for E-Bikes across the state.

Initially introduced in November by State Senator Keith Truenow, a Republican from Tavares, the bill aims to establish new safety regulations specifically for electric bicycles. After gaining legislative approval in March, the proposal was formally presented to the governor on Monday for potential enactment.

Central to the bill’s provisions is a speed limit restriction, capping E-Bike speeds at 10 mph on sidewalks and shared pathways when pedestrians are within a 50-foot radius. This measure is designed to ensure pedestrian safety amidst the growing popularity of E-Bikes.

Should this regulation be violated, offenders would face a monetary penalty of $30, reinforcing the state’s commitment to enforce these new safety standards. As the bill awaits the governor’s decision, it represents a significant move towards more regulated and safer use of electric bicycles in Florida.

Anyone who breaks this rule could face a fine of $30.

The bill also creates the Micromobility Device Safety Task Force to recommend improvements to state law when it comes to public safety for devices like e-bikes.

Furthermore, SB 382 requires law enforcement to start tracking crashes that involve E-Bikes and other micromobility devices.

SB 382 also originally had a provision that would have required a driver’s license for Class 3 E-Bikes. That rule was ultimately scrapped from the bill, though.

If signed by DeSantis, SB 382 is set to take effect on July 1.
