Chris Robinson Faces Backlash After Criticizing ‘USA’ Chant at Florida Concert

0

Chris Robinson, the lead singer of the Black Crowes, faced a wave of boos from the audience after he criticized fans for chanting “USA” during a concert in Florida. His comments sparked backlash as he questioned what made America so praiseworthy, causing the crowd to react negatively.

The incident unfolded on a Sunday night at the band’s performance in Tampa, part of their “Southern Hospitality Tour.” The controversy started when an image of the band’s black crow mascot, dressed as Uncle Sam, was displayed on a screen behind the stage. This prompted the crowd to begin a patriotic chant, according to a report by TMZ.

As the band was preparing to perform their popular song “She Talks to Angels,” Robinson, 59, addressed the audience’s enthusiasm with skepticism. A source informed the outlet that Robinson responded with irritation to the ongoing chants.

“Thanks for the geography lesson,” Robinson reportedly quipped, showing his growing frustration with the “USA” chants that continued to echo through the venue.

He further provoked the audience by questioning, “I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now,” as per the outlet’s report, leading to a tense atmosphere during the show.

The comment was enough to set off a round of boos from the crowd — with some so upset they started leaving the venue.

In a clip obtained by TMZ, Robinson is heard clapping back at those booing him.

“Some of us have real faith,” the 59-year-old singer is heard saying to a noticeably dwindling crowd.

“For those of you f–king booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not f–king ignorant.”

The online backlash to the rocker’s remarks was swift.

“US Veteran here. Bought tickets for my wife’s birthday in Tampa. Chris Robinson mocked the USA chanters… We walked out disappointed. Hoping for a partial refund,” one fan shared on X.

“So I’m at the black crowes concert in Tampa tonight… Chris Robinson basically just told Patriots to kiss his ass! Not kidding. This was my 12th Crowes concert since 87, I just dropped them like a hot iron. F–k you Chris!” another fan seethed.

“Never had any issue with the Black Crowes, but good lord, Chris Robinson handled this in the worst way possible. It’s one thing if the fans are combative or disrupting your set, it’s another when fans are innocuously chanting USA,” wrote another.

The Atlanta-born singer, who started the band with his brother, guitarist Rich Robinson, in 1984, found major success in the early 1990s, especially with their first two albums: “Shake Your Money Maker” (1990) and “The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion” (1992).

The band split in 2015, reunited in 2019, and are currently on tour in support of their 10th studio album, “A Pound of Feathers.”

In a March interview with Mojo to promote the album, Robinson described himself as “not interested in politics.”

“I’m not interested in politics. I’m more interested in poetry and art and people and experience,” the lead singer told the outlet.

Trump’s Surprise Late-Night Endorsements Shake Up Six State Primaries, Including California

0

In a whirlwind of political endorsements, former President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind several candidates ahead of the upcoming primary elections scheduled for Tuesday. The states involved in this electoral showdown include California, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota, featuring key races for governorships, congressional seats, and the Senate.

Among those receiving Trump’s endorsement is U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra from Iowa. Feenstra is ambitiously eyeing the governor’s seat, and Trump has emphatically backed him. On Truth Social, Trump enthusiastically outlined Feenstra’s plans for the state, highlighting his commitment to boosting the economy, slashing taxes, promoting American-made products, and unleashing energy dominance. Trump praised Feenstra’s dedication to supporting farmers and ranchers, securing borders, and maintaining law and order. He also emphasized Feenstra’s pledge to uphold election integrity and staunchly defend the Second Amendment.

In the political battleground of California, where Democrats have held sway, Trump is aiming to disrupt the status quo by endorsing Steve Hilton in the gubernatorial race. California utilizes a unique top-two primary system, where all candidates are listed on the same ballot, with the two highest vote-getters—regardless of party—progressing to the general election. This system presents a strategic opportunity for Republicans to gain ground in a predominantly Democratic stronghold.

Adding to the momentum of his endorsements, Trump addressed supporters at a rally in Clive, Iowa. The event, held at the Horizon Events Center on January 27, 2026, served as a prelude to the crucial midterm elections. As the political landscape continues to shift, Trump’s endorsements signal his ongoing influence and strategic maneuvering in shaping the Republican agenda across these pivotal states.

“He is a truly fine man, one who has watched as this once great State has gone to Hell. Gavin Newscum and the Democrats have done an absolutely horrendous job,” Trump said of current Gov. Gavin Newsom, a frequent Trump critic.

“Crime is increasing, and Taxes are the highest of any State in the Country, maybe the World,” Trump added. “Steve can turn it around, before it is too late, and, as President, I will help him to do so! With our Administration, working alongside a Great Governor like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before.”

He also endorsed California GOP Assemblyman James Gallagher, who is running for Congress, as well as San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who is also seeking a seat in the House.

Others in California who received endorsements include Reps. Tom McClintock, Jay Obernolte, and Vince Fong, along with Kevin Lincoln, a former Stockton mayor who is running for a seat in the newly redrawn 13th Congressional District.

Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., also received a nod from Trump.

Other congressional endorsements included Reps. Tom Kean Jr., Jeff Van Drew and Chris Smith, all of New Jersey, as well as Rep. Troy Downing, R-Mont. Trump also endorsed Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, in her U.S. Senate bid.

Trump also endorsed Aaron Flint, who is running to represent Montana; South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley; and Greg Cunningham, a former police officer from New Mexico.

Trump had previously endorsed Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D.

In May, Trump touted victories by several candidates he had backed in GOP primaries or runoff elections.

Turmoil at ’60 Minutes’ as Esteemed Correspondent Criticizes CBS Leadership

0

Veteran journalist Scott Pelley reportedly expressed strong criticism of CBS News management on Monday, following significant changes to the “60 Minutes” team.

Pelley targeted CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss for her decision to dismiss key members of the “60 Minutes” team, including the executive producer, executive editor, and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. He referred to the day these changes were made as ‘Black Thursday,’ according to a report from The Guardian.

During a meeting with the show’s staff, newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton, and CBS News managing editor Charles Forelle, Pelley allegedly stated, “She’s murdering 60 Minutes.” Sources familiar with the meeting reported these remarks.

He further criticized Weiss, reportedly saying, “She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that.”

Weiss was notably absent from Monday’s meeting, as CBS executives reportedly requested her to stay away due to the staff’s discontent over the recent personnel changes, as mentioned in The New York Times.

Forelle then accused Pelley of being rude, but he fired back by saying the network was rude in its treatment of Tanya Simon, the executive producer who was fired on Thursday.

Pelley also allegedly told Bilton he had ‘scant qualifications’ for the job, according to Puck News reporter Dylan Byers.

Bilton responded by suggesting they have the conversation in private, but Pelley countered that he would prefer to speak in front of his colleagues, Byers reports.

When Bilton then rebuked, ‘They’re my colleagues too,’ Pelley replied: ‘That remains to be seen.’

CBS News managing editor Charles Forelle

Pelley’s fiery remarks came in a meeting between the 60 Minutes staffers and the show’s new executive producer, Nick Bilton, and CBS News managing editor Charles Forelle

Those familiar with the discussions said 60 Minutes staff who were present at the meeting showed their support for Pelley – even giving him a standing ovation as he spoke.

His comments came even as one source claimed network executives have signaled their willingness to negotiate with Pelley, who has been a fixture of the news magazine since 2003 and is seen as an integral part of the show.

Senior CBS News executives have reached out to him, along with remaining 60 Minutes correspondents Bill Whitaker, Lesley Stahl and Jon Wertheim, several times over the past week in hopes of convincing them to stay, according to Variety.

But in the hours after Pelley’s eruption, several dozen CBS News veterans – including many former 60 Minutes employees – signed a letter to Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, urging him to commit to the show’s editorial independence.

‘We, the undersigned, urge you and your management team at CBS News to uphold the principle of editorial independence that has made 60 Minutes – in the words of the show’s new executive producer – “the most important television journalism brand this country has ever produced,”‘ it read.

‘Institutional trust is not transferred through ownership,’ the signatories then argued. ’60 Minutes prospered and had impact because it operated under an implicit and sacred obligation to the public.

‘Modernizing the show for new audiences and new delivery approaches is important – but not at the cost of editorial integrity,’ the letter continued.

‘The wholesale dismissal of editorial management, without a pledge to maintain the values, standards and traditions of this program, puts the legacy of 60 Minutes in jeopardy.’

The letter concluded by asking Ellison to ‘send a clear message to your staff, your viewers and the broader public that you respect and value editorial independence and press freedom.’

Among the organizers of the letter was former 60 Minutes producer Lowell Bergman, who produced the show’s groundbreaking investigation into the tobacco industry in the 1990s.

Signers also included former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather, documentary editor Alex Gibney and actor Glenn Close as well as many other veterans of CBS News.

Outrage at the network executives erupted last week after the show’s producers were fired along with Vega and Alfonsi – who was reportedly left unaware of executives’ decision not to renew her contract.

Both of the now-ousted correspondents have claimed their firing was a form of censorship.

Correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega and executive producer Tanya Simon were unceremoniously fired last week

Correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega and executive producer Tanya Simon were unceremoniously fired last week

Vega, in her statement, said her contract was not set to expire until March 2027 and that she was fired after she refused to tailor her stories to be politically biased.

‘Reporting teams have held back on submitting story pitches about important news topics out of fear of the internal repercussions,’ she wrote. ‘Let’s call this what it is: censorship, both imposed and self-driven.

‘It is dangerous for the show and dangerous for democracy.

‘I held the line and refused to incorporate suggestions that offend the conscience, a phrase I borrow from a colleague who has also fought to keep questionable editorial suggestions away from the facts,’ she continued, not naming the colleague.

‘I know from many conversations with colleagues that many producing teams and correspondents working on the show today have had to fight to maintain editorial independence with regularity.

‘I am far from the only 60 Minutes correspondent who has asked herself, “What is my personal red line? How much can I push back before I pay the price?”‘

Alfonsi, meanwhile, blamed her exit from the program on a clash she had with CBS brass back in December over a decision to pull a segment she produced about the conditions at Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT), an El Salvadoran prison where the US has deported suspected illegal immigrants.

Weiss had decided at the time to pull her segment about the conditions at Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT), an El Salvadoran prison where the US has deported suspected illegal immigrants shortly before it aired

Weiss argued at the time that Alfonsi did not get enough administration officials on the record for the ‘important piece.’

Alfonsi immediately tore into the decision in an internal email, accusing her bosses of political censorship. The email was promptly leaked to the press.

The journalist reiterated those claims to the Times Wednesday, as the paper broke the news on her 60 Minutes exit.

‘I think it was a deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize accurate reporting,’ she told the Times.

Alfonsi also claimed her agent’s inquiries to the network about her future at 60 Minutes had been ‘met with absolute silence.’

‘The message could not be clearer: my time at 60 Minutes is apparently over,’ she said in a statement.

‘In the coming days, network leadership may attempt to hide behind corporate euphemisms like “modernization” and “restructuring” to explain away my departure. Don’t be misled,’ she wrote.

‘This was not a routine corporate transition; it was a deliberate choice,’ the statement continued.

It also praised ‘fearless, independent reporting’ seen from 60 Minutes in the past.

‘Today, CBS management is abandoning that mission, choosing access journalism over accountability and protecting power rather than scrutinizing it,’ she wrote, just hours before Weiss’s shakeup.

‘Journalists willing to challenge authority are being pushed aside in favor of those who will not.’

Anderson Cooper has already left the program ahead of his contract’s expiration earlier this month, in part because of the show’s new direction after Paramount’s merger with Skydance over the summer, Status reported.

Veteran Lesley Stahl is also mulling a network exit as well, after being passed over for a recent sit-down with Benjamin Netanyahu in April, sources told Status earlier this month.

Weiss was appointed by Paramount CEO David Ellison late last year.

Owens and former CBS News chief Wendy McMahon both fled ahead of Ellison’s ascent in July, citing corporate overreach they said was already occurring ahead of Paramount’s merger with Ellison’s Skydance, which was solidified over the summer.

The Daily Mail has reached out to CBS News for comment.

Sen. Chuck Schumer Faces Unexpected Criticism in Heated Goldman-Lander Debate

0

Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who hails from Park Slope, found himself sidelined by the two Democratic candidates vying for the House seat in his district.

During a spirited debate hosted by NY1 on Monday evening, Rep. Dan Goldman and his Democratic primary competitor, Brad Lander, were questioned about their support for Schumer if he decides to seek re-election in 2028.

Lander, eager to distinguish himself, did not hold back in his response. “I believe it’s time for fresh leadership within the Democratic Party. That’s precisely why I’m challenging Rep. Goldman in this race,” he remarked, casting doubt on Schumer’s future.

Goldman, on the other hand, who is campaigning for a third term, chose a more cautious approach. “I haven’t considered it yet. I have no idea if he plans to run. We’ll address that when the time comes,” Goldman replied to NY1 moderators Errol Louis and Courtney Gross.

“I have not thought about it. I have no idea whether he’s going to run or not. We’ll deal with that when the time comes,” Goldman told NY1’s questioners Errol Louis and Courtney Gross.

Both said they would support keeping Brooklyn Rep. Hakeem Jeffries as the House Democratic leader.

“[Jeffries] endorsed me,” Goldman added.

House District 10 includes downtown Manhattan neighborhoods such as the Lower East Side and Chinatown, as well as Brooklyn’s brownstone and waterfront neighborhoods.

Lander, the former city comptroller and councilman backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, repeatedly referred to Goldman as a “corporate Democrat.”

He also criticized his opponent, the Levi Strauss heir, for refusing to endorse Mamdani for mayor last year, even after the democratic socialist won the Democratic primary, and for using his personal wealth to help finance his campaign.

Candidates Brad Lander and Rep. Dan Goldman sparred over Israel, Trump impeachment and wealth. NY1

Goldman, who previously served as lead counsel in the first House impeachment of former President Trump and as a federal prosecutor, called Lander a “career politician” who “can’t be trusted.”

Both said they would pursue impeachment charges against Trump again if Democrats regain control of the House of Representatives.

The two Jewish candidates also sparred over Israel and the Middle East during the debate.

Goldman marched in the Israel Day Parade. Lander, who has accused the Israeli government of committing “genocide” in Gaza, did not. He also said he would vote against all US military aid to Israel.

Both said ICE should be abolished because of its controversial detention policies.

The candidates also touted more federal funding for public housing and raising taxes on the wealthy.

During the lightning round questioning, Goldman said he planned on attending a Knicks championship playoff game.

Lander said he would attend a Knicks watch party because the tickets to attend at Madison Square Garden are too expensive.

A recent Pix 11/Emerson College poll showed Lander leading the incumbent congressman by 34 points — 57% to 34%. The Goldman camp, however, disputed the survey’s findings.

Tragic Incident: Florida Beach Toll Booth Worker Fatally Struck by Driver in Shocking Crash

0

A tragic incident unfolded on a Florida beach on Monday when the driver of a pickup truck collided with a toll booth, resulting in the death of the attendant. The truck became lodged in the sand after the impact.

The devastating crash took place at approximately 12:40 p.m. at the Dunlawton Avenue beach access ramp in Daytona Beach Shores, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. Tammy Jo Baker, who was inside the booth, tragically lost her life just weeks before her 63rd birthday, as reported by Sheriff Mike Chitwood at the scene.

The sheriff estimated the vehicle’s speed at around 40 mph when it crashed into and demolished the toll booth.

The aftermath showed the toll booth toppled over, a grim testament to the force of the collision that claimed the life of the attendant inside, as confirmed by authorities. (Volusia Sheriff’s Office)

Baker, a longtime employee with Volusia County who recently began working for the beach parking contractor, was pronounced dead at the scene after lifeguards attempted to perform CPR.

“I think she was probably close to being killed on impact,” Chitwood said. “That booth isn’t made of anything, if you look at it. And you hit that thing at 40 miles an hour; there’s really nowhere to go. And it flipped the booth around, the force of that.”

After the vehicle struck Baker, the driver, identified as 35-year-old Deanna Harrell, continued toward the water before authorities said she attempted before attempting to turn around and became stuck in the sand.

Bystanders ran to the truck to pull Harrell out, authorities said. She was being tested for possible impairment while driving, Chitwood noted, adding that there was a “heavy odor of alcohol” coming from the vehicle.

“It’s just senseless,” Chitwood said of Baker’s death.

Pat McAfee on the Verge of Significant Career Shift to ESPN Following Challenging Personal Experience

Pat McAfee might soon find himself signing an extension with ESPN, as reported by Front Office Sports. Despite his current contract with the network running until 2028, discussions for a new deal are already underway, according to Ryan Glasspiegel from FOS. While no specific numbers have been disclosed, it seems an agreement isn’t just around the corner. ESPN has chosen not to comment on these negotiations.

McAfee operates uniquely within the ESPN structure. Instead of being a direct employee, he produces his own show, which he then sells to ESPN. He also often appears on College GameDay. Under the present arrangement, ESPN compensates McAfee with an estimated $17 million annually to broadcast his show. From this sum, McAfee covers his staff’s salaries and production expenses.

The value McAfee brings to ESPN is evident. “We were up 34 percent year-over-year in the 18-to-24 demographic,” ESPN president Burke Magnus shared with FOS in 2025. “That kind of growth doesn’t happen in our industry without something extraordinary. Pat embodies that appeal. I have kids aged 23 and 25. To them, he’s the voice of their generation, much like Chris Berman was for mine.”

This news about McAfee’s potential extension with ESPN comes on the heels of the 39-year-old sharing the challenges surrounding the recent birth of his infant son. His personal and professional lives seem to be converging in a moment of significance.

News of an extension for McAfee with ESPN comes after the 39-year-old revealed the difficult circumstances of his infant son’s recent birth.

As he explained in a statement, his son Midas arrived four weeks early before spending around 36 hours in intensive care following the emergency C-section birth.

‘Due to Samantha having a high risk pregnancy and severe preeclampsia, the decision was made to have an emergency C-Section on Friday night. Baby boy officially entered the world on May 22nd at 10:42PM as a 6lb 6oz screaming young legend… 10 Toes, 10 Fingers, full head of hair,’ McAfee wrote in a statement.

‘Literally in his first moments of life, Midas was working… He was able to get his O2 Levels high enough to be able to come hang with us in our room and because of that we got to do all of the immediate magical newborn moments.. Skin to skin, 10,000 kisses, tons of love, all of that.

‘Inevitably, since he came into the world at 36 Weeks (40 is full term), he had to develop his lungs a little bit more, get some fluid out of him, and adjust a bit to life outside of Sam’s stomach.

‘So, he was sent to the NICU to help the transition from the womb to the world.

‘We had a sneaky suspicion that he was a dawg and a fighter but, it is a bit scary to see your baby hooked up to so many ‘very serious’ things.. He ended up staying roughly 36 hours in the NICU before being released back to our room… a FULL CELEBRATION occurred. We’ve been floating around this room.. sleeping and burping and feeding and changing diapers ever since.’

He also paid an emotional tribute to his wife, writing: ‘Watching Samantha battle thru her recovery has been nothing short of inspiring.

‘I will be sure that our kids will know how much you went thru for them.. And every time I went and saw boy, I couldn’t help but fantasize about what his life could become.. So many dreams and opportunities waiting for this young stud.’

McAfee revealed Midas’s middle name, Robert, was tribute to his father-in-law who passed away in June 2024.

McAfee explained: ”Robert’ is a tribute to Samantha’s dad and best friend.. A man that we lost way too soon a couple of years back and will now live on forever thru Mighty Midas.

‘Midas will know his grandfather thru our stories and pictures.. and we know Bob will be looking out for Midas for all of time.’

In an exclusive interview with Daily Mail earlier this year , McAfee opened up on how much he loves his life as a father – and his plans for his son to play sports.

‘Now that I have a two-and-a-half-year-old, I have no idea what I would have done [without kids],’ McAfee said. ‘I love everything about it.

He said of his son’s potential sporting career: ‘I do not want him to be a kicker. If he wants to throw it a little bit, I’ll certainly help. But if he wants to be an astronaut? Cool. I can’t wait for all of it.’

McAfee and wife Samantha turned to IVF to start a family after Samantha twice had an ectopic pregnancy – when a fertilized egg grows outside the uterus. On both occasions, she required life-saving surgery.

Zaya Wade Shines at Inclusive Ball with Proud Support from Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union

Zaya Wade marked her 19th birthday in a meaningful way, uniting family, friends, and supporters for a cause she passionately champions.

The model and activist organized the second annual Translatable Ball on May 30 at The Mayan in Los Angeles. With a masquerade theme, the event aimed to raise funds for the Translatable Project, a nonprofit she co-founded with her father, Dwyane Wade.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, she expressed her hopes for the event, saying, “Even though this is a masquerade, our lives are not meant to be concealed; we are meant to be visible. You can be whoever you want to be, express whatever you feel, without fear of judgment.”

Zaya also emphasized the significance of community support.

“Finding your people is crucial,” she shared. “Even when it feels daunting or lonely, organizations like Translatable and other trans support groups exist to show you that there are people ready to stand by you.”

Among those there to support Zaya were Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union.

While speaking to Teen Vogue, the couple shared their hopes for the evening.

“I want everyone to leave feeling peaceful, that they came and had a great time. Nobody needs to regulate their nervous system, because it has been regulated,” Union said.

“I want everyone to leave here feeling an expansion in their life,” Dwyane added. “Hopefully, everyone comes in and lets out their creativity, their humor, all the feelings, all of the emotions, and they walk out feeling fuller than they did when they walked in.”

After the event, Zaya reflected on the night in an Instagram post.

“The perfect birthday @translatableproject. Thank you to everyone who joined us at our second ball and made it such a special night,” she wrote.

Translatable, which launched through the Wade Family Foundation in 2024, provides resources and support for LGBTQIA+ youth and their families.

Vivid Sydney Permanently Canceled Amid Drone Chaos: A Shocking Turn for Australia’s Iconic Light Festival

Vivid Sydney has decided to cancel its remaining drone displays after experiencing “technical difficulties” that caused drones to crash into the harbor, leading to multiple show cancellations this week.

In a statement, Vivid Sydney explained, “Due to an unexpected technical problem during Monday night’s ‘Star-Bound’ drone show, we regret to announce that the rest of the year’s scheduled drone performances will not take place.”

Instead, fireworks will now accompany the Laser Lightfall spectacle in Darling Harbour at the times initially set for the drone shows.

Vivid Sydney also mentioned that efforts are underway to retrieve the drones that fell from the sky during Monday’s mishap.

Vivid Sydney also confirmed a retrieval process is underway following Monday night’s incident, which saw dozens of drones fall from the sky.

There was chaos on Monday night when nearly 90 drones fell into the harbour during the 7.30pm Star-Bound show, which was subsequently called off.

The 9.30pm event was cancelled, as were several other performances this week to allow for a “full technical and safety review”.

SKYMAGIC, the operator leading the drone show, previously said the incident was caused by “an unforeseen change in the radio frequency (RF) environment occurring after take-off”.

It has now confirmed it is working closely with the relevant authorities to identify the external interference that caused the failsafe response at Monday evening’s drone show.

“This process requires further technical, operational data and local assessment,” it said in a statement.

Vivid Sydney understands the news will be disappointing for some visitors but said providing certainty for attendees and ensuring public safety remain its highest priorities.

The annual festival kicked off last weekend with an array of light installations, music performances, food and other experiences around the city.

It also saw the return of the drone show, which was such a hit in 2024 that it was cancelled in 2025 due to safety concerns.

There were snags from the start though, with the first performance on Sunday night having to be cancelled due to rain.

The 9.30pm show went smoothly, only for the Monday night shows to be plagued with technical issues.

Vivid Sydney is slated to run until June 13.

Beloved Music Icon Tragically Passes at 46 in Devastating Road Accident

A cherished barbecue establishment in California is facing criticism from local residents who argue that the restaurant’s smoke is blanketing the area with fumes, prompting a debate before the city council.

A&M BBQ, which opened its doors in Sebastopol in June 2024, quickly gained a loyal following and was even endorsed by Guy Fieri last year.

However, the eatery’s positive reputation has taken a hit, as community members voiced their concerns at a city council meeting on May 5, claiming that the restaurant’s large smokers are degrading the air quality in the neighborhood.

Resident Megan Cowan expressed that the situation had become ‘untenable,’ exacerbated by the restaurant’s upgrade to larger smokers with higher smokestacks.

The allegations came as a shock to Kristopher Austin, the owner and pitmaster, who shared with SFGate that he was surprised by the negative feedback and emphasized that he ‘never intended to be a nuisance to anyone.’

Austin also revealed that city officials approached the restaurant in March and asked that one of its two smokers be moved off-site.

That smoker is now sitting in storage, effectively cutting A&M BBQ’s production capacity in half.

But Austin and his business partner, Finn Liss, may soon face an even bigger challenge. Under the city’s zoning rules, the restaurant’s remaining smoker could also be forced out of operation.

According to notices shared with SFGate by Sebastopol’s city manager, Mary Gourley, A&M BBQ was informed in April that its two large commercial smokers were not approved for use at its current location.

The issue stems from zoning regulations that prohibit outdoor commercial barbecues in the area where the restaurant operates.

The pressure escalated on May 28, when the city issued another notice giving the restaurant 10 days to stop using its outdoor commercial barbecue equipment, warning that the smokers were violating local zoning rules.

With limited options and the escalating backlash, Austin and Liss took to Instagram on May 14 to address the controversy, writing: ‘For nearly a year, we have actively been searching for a more appropriate long-term location that can better support our growth and operations.

‘Throughout this process, we have remained in communication with City staff and continue working toward solutions,’ they wrote later in the statement.

‘We have already begun making operational adjustments while continuing to pursue long-term solutions.’

Supporters quickly rallied behind the restaurant online, flooding the post with messages of support.

One commenter said they lived just two houses away from the residents who filed the complaints and had ‘never been overwhelmed by the smoke, smell or anything negative generated by A&M.’

Others blasted city officials for what they viewed as a lack of support for small businesses.

Another user called the situation ‘mind-blowing,’ saying it was shocking that a successful local restaurant had been put in a position where it needed to come online and defend its business against the complaints.

But the long-term solutions outlined by the barbecue duo may be too challenging to accomplish.

According to Austin, finding a suitable location within the city’s zoning requirements has proven to be a major hurdle.

City officials suggested relocating A&M BBQ’s smoker to the former Mary’s Pizza Shack property, but the proposal ultimately fell through.

Austin and Liss also explored moving the smoker to a parking space at Mexican restaurant El Coronel, though those discussions failed to produce a workable solution.

During the May 5 council meeting, former Sebastopol mayor Larry Robinson suggested A&M BBQ install filtration equipment to bring the smoker into compliance with the city’s wood-smoke ordinance.

However, commercial-grade filtration systems can cost thousands of dollars, which would be a significant financial burden for the restaurant’s owners.

In an effort to garner support, the duo also asked their supporters in the comments of their post to send letters to the city council and attend in solidarity at the next meeting on Tuesday.

Neither Austin nor Gourley has immediately responded to the Daily Mail’s request for comment.
