Grandmother Triumphs Over Cancer, Tragically Falls Victim to Gun Violence

0

A Missouri community is mourning the loss of a courageous cancer survivor who was tragically killed by a gunman in a parking lot shooting.

Amy Coon, 45, a grandmother who had recently triumphed over Hodgkin lymphoma, lost her life in a senseless act of violence. She was fatally shot when 27-year-old Allen Price allegedly opened fire with a rifle outside a grocery store.

The shooting occurred on Memorial Day at a Cosentino’s Price Chopper, with gunfire erupting just before 4:30 p.m., according to reports from the Kansas City Star.

In addition to Coon, a 16-year-old store employee, who was gathering shopping carts at the time, was injured in the attack.

The young victim, whose name has not been released, is currently in intensive care as he continues to fight for recovery.

Two armed bystanders intervened and detained Price during the shooting, likely preventing further harm, Pleasant Hill Police Chief Tommy Wright said Tuesday, KSHB reported.

Price turned the gun and shot himself in the head, but survived. He has since been in police custody at a local hospital.

The 27-year-old had previously been released on bond in a separate case, where he faced a charge of harassing family members and threatening to shoot them.

Price has been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of assault or attempted assault, and three counts of armed criminal action.

Charging documents obtained by the outlet show police identified the firearm as a Winchester .243-caliber rifle.

Police found three empty shell casings near Price. One was located inside the rifle and 20 more rounds were allegedly discovered on him.

Court documents also noted a concerning past regarding Price’s mental health, and records showing he admitted to having a shotgun at the time of his 2025 arrest.

However, Police Chief Wright does not believe the prior incident is connected to the shooting.

Tributes poured in for the 45-year-old, with family and friends sharing photos and expressing their grief over the tragedy.

‘Amy lived a simple life and found joy in the little things,’ the grandmother’s obituary read.

Empowering Young Minds: How to Discuss Antisemitism with Children Effectively

0

In a recent discussion with SBS Examines, clinical psychologist Amanda Gordon highlighted a rising trend among families who are turning to professionals for guidance on addressing antisemitism with their children. This concern is prompting parents to seek advice on how to initiate these important conversations at home.

Gordon emphasized that discussions about antisemitism need to be tailored to children’s developmental stages. Young children require a different approach compared to teenagers, as they process information differently. It’s crucial to adapt the conversation to suit their level of understanding and maturity.

Olga Weintraub Elia, an early childhood educator, believes that even the youngest children can grasp the basic concepts of kindness and inclusivity. She advises parents not to delve into complex political explanations but to focus on key values such as fairness, kindness, and respect. Through these values, children can begin to understand and appreciate diversity.

Conversely, Shoshana, who teaches high school students, notes that guiding teenagers through these conversations can be more complex. Adolescents are more likely to encounter diverse perspectives and may require a more nuanced discussion that acknowledges their ability to engage with more sophisticated ideas and social issues.

“You don’t need to provide some political explanations, but you can talk about fairness, being kind, being respectful,” she said.

Shoshana, a teacher of high school students, said it can be harder to navigate these conversations with teenagers.

It’s not if they’ve seen antisemitism, it’s when they’ve seen antisemitism.

Shoshana said her students often shared jokes or memes online without realising they had antisemitic origins.

“You have to be able to just talk to them about it, frankly … model to them what rational thought looks like when it comes to things like antisemitism and racism.”

In this week’s episode, SBS Examines asks — how should we talk to children about antisemitism?

Meet Stephanie: The Lesser-Known Sibling Adding Glamour to Peter Phillips’s Royal Wedding

0

As anticipation builds around the guest list for the upcoming wedding of Peter Phillips and his fiancée, NHS nurse Harriet Sperling, one family member is expected to play a significant and supportive role at the ceremony this Saturday.

Although Prince Harry is unlikely to attend his cousin Peter’s wedding due to their estranged relationship, guests can anticipate the presence of Peter’s lesser-known half-sister, Stephanie Phillips, at the event set to take place at All Saints’ Church in Kemble, Gloucestershire.

Stephanie is the daughter of Captain Mark Phillips, Princess Anne’s first husband, and his second wife, Sandy Pflueger, who hails from Hawaii. The couple, who share an equestrian background, were married from 1997 until their divorce in 2012.

Now married to agricultural graduate William Hosier, 28-year-old Stephanie reportedly maintains a close bond with her half-siblings, Peter and Zara Tindall, Princess Anne’s daughter.

Known for her preference for privacy, Stephanie has mostly stayed out of the public eye since her own wedding in Tetbury in 2022. During that occasion, Princess Anne was a picture of elegance as she watched her former husband, Mark, accompany their daughter down the aisle.

Zara’s daughters, Mia and Lena, joined their cousins, Peter’s daughters with his ex-wife Autumn Kelly, Savannah and Isla, as flower girls at the nuptials. Meanwhile, Stephanie was also a flower girl at Zara’s 2011 wedding to Mike Tindall.

The Worcester-based eventing pro seems to share an especially warm relationship with Peter, with Stephanie describing him as ‘the best big brother out there’ in a post on Instagram, where she also previously shared photos of herself on exotic trips to glamorous destinations.

Like her parents and older sibling Zara, Stephanie is a keen equestrian – having posted pictures of her beloved horses online, while she also grew up a stone’s throw away from them on Aston Farm, on the Gatcombe Park estate.

However, her career as an eventing pro has not quite matched up to that of Olympic silver medallist Zara.

Stephanie attended the prestigious Dean Close School in Cheltenham, where fees cost up to £13,900 per term.

After achieving CCD at A-Level, she went on to study Business Management at the University of Worcester and graduated in 2021.

Despite her royal connections, Stephanie remained out of the spotlight during her time at school and even worked as a barmaid at a local pub.

She completed both the bronze and gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards on the scheme, which was founded by her half-sister’s grandfather.

She has since followed in the footsteps of her Olympian sister to become a sportswoman.

An accomplished rider, she’s competed at Barbury International, Wellington International Horse Trials and the West Wiltshire trials. She’s sponsored by saddle maker Voltaire Design and is often seen in trendy equestrian designs.

While Stephanie has not posted anything on her official Instagram account since September 2022, she has previously shared an adorable snap of her niece, Isla, at Peppa Pig World when she was a toddler.

In one image of the youngster wearing Easter bunny ears, Stephanie wrote: ‘Cutest Easter bunny ever.’

Peter’s ex-wife and Isla’s mother, Autumn, responded: ‘She loves her aunty Steph!’

Before Covid-19 forced the world into lockdown, she was also regularly seen with her siblings at eventing competitions, including one sweet snap where she gave her brother-in-law Mike a piggyback.

Should royal family ties or personal relationships matter most when deciding who is invited to weddings?

The bond Peter and Zara share with Stephanie will likely also shape the relationship between Savannah, Isla and their future step-sister, Harriet’s 13-year-old daughter Georgina, after the wedding.

Georgina made her public debut when she joined the Royal Family’s traditional Easter service at St George’s Chapel on April 5, when Peter’s daughters from his first marriage walked alongside Georgina in a touching display of sisterly solidarity.

Isla and Savannah appeared determined to follow in their father’s footsteps when it comes to fostering a friendship with Georgina, with both Peter and Zara believed to be close to Stephanie.

Stephanie is also close to her father, Captain Mark Phillips, writing in one Facebook post that she ‘loves him loads’.

It comes after a source told the Daily Mail that Prince Harry will not fly to the UK for Peter’s wedding next month after the pair ‘lost touch’.

A friend close to The Princess Royal’s son said: ‘Peter and Harry haven’t spoken for several years and have simply lost touch, so he hasn’t been invited.’

‘Peter and Harriet’s wedding is an intimate occasion with their close friends and immediate family around them in the Cotswolds. It’s an area where they grew up and is very special to them both,’ a pal said.

Adding to the sad situation, the groom-to-be once discussed how growing up alongside his cousins during family holidays to Sandringham, Balmoral and Windsor, ‘was a lot of fun’.

‘There was a lot of space for kids to run around in, and it wasn’t just us – it was the Waleses, Freddie and Ella Windsor, and the Gloucesters,’ Peter said during an appearance on Good Morning Britain in 2016.

‘So there was quite a gang of us growing up in that age, and it was a lot of fun. We caused quite a bit of mayhem and chaos, but fortunately, I don’t think we broke too much!’

But the cousins are unlikely to showcase that familiar bond at Peter’s wedding – with further drama surrounding the possible attendance of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

The daughters of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are expected to join senior royals at the wedding in what will mark their first major public appearance in months.

Beatrice and Eugenie – who is expecting her third child – have kept a notably lower profile following renewed scrutiny surrounding their parents’ links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein earlier this year.

A source revealed: ‘The Royal Family needs good news and nothing unites like a big church wedding. Beatrice is going, and Eugenie is in the second trimester of her pregnancy but hopes to attend.

‘The King always wanted both to remain part of the family. He made it clear they are welcome at family events.’

Dodgers’ Brusdar Graterol Undergoes Back Surgery: What It Means for the Team

0

Brusdar Graterol’s ongoing struggle with injuries has hit another roadblock. On Sunday, news emerged that the Dodgers’ reliever underwent surgery for a fresh back injury sustained during a minor-league rehab assignment earlier this month. This latest development adds another layer of uncertainty to Graterol’s future this season, potentially signaling a lengthy recovery period ahead.

The confirmation of the surgery came from a source close to The California Post, following Graterol’s own announcement on Instagram, where he shared details of the operation.

Despite this setback, Graterol remains resilient. “I fell again, but I won’t stay down here,” he expressed in his Instagram post. “I will rise. My goal isn’t over — it’s just beginning.”

Graterol’s journey back to the mound began earlier this May. He embarked on a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City, striving to come back from a shoulder surgery that had already kept him off the field for the previous season and the start of this one.

At the start of May, Graterol went out on a rehab stint with Triple-A Oklahoma City, trying to return from a shoulder surgery that sidelined him for all of last year and the start of this one.

After his fourth outing on May 12, however, he was pulled off the assignment after his back “flared up” on him, as Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced at the time.

Graterol was transferred to the 60-day injured list a week later.

General manager Brandon Gomes said then that surgery was an option for the 27-year-old right-hander, but that the club wanted “to exhaust all options” first.

“He’s worked really hard [to try and come back],” Gomes said.

Now, he’ll have to start all over again.

While Graterol’s status for the rest of this season wasn’t immediately clear, it’s likely that his operation will come with a long-term timeline to return.

Roberts had hinted at a prolonged absence for the flamethrower earlier this month, saying that “it’s gonna be a slow program for a while for him, unfortunately.”

Graterol, who has a 2.78 career ERA over six MLB seasons, last pitched in the majors during the 2024 postseason, as part of a bullpen that carried the Dodgers to the first of their current back-to-back World Series championships.

After that, he underwent surgery on his labrum in November, initially ruling him out for the first half of the 2025 season. When his shoulder didn’t recover as quickly as hoped, he ended up missing all of the Dodgers’ title-defense campaign on the injured list.

Graterol was slow-played again this spring, after struggling to regain his upper-90s mph velocity in a throwing program during camp. He opened the season back on the IL but said at the end of spring training that he was confident in making his return this year.

He seemed on track for that up until his May 12 outing, when his fastball velocity dipped back under 95 mph amid his back issue.

Now, suddenly he’s essentially back to square one all over again. Facing another surgical recovery. Another elongated rehab. And, quite possibly, another season spent entirely on the shelf.

Revitalize Your Core: 4 Effective Gym Exercises for Faster Strength Recovery After 60

Strengthening your core without the need for floor exercises can significantly benefit your long-term health and fitness.

No-equipment workouts offer incredible versatility, allowing you to maintain your fitness regimen wherever you are. This convenience is particularly important as we age because regular exercise is critical in counteracting the natural muscle loss that comes with aging. Staying fit ensures you can maintain your independence and stay active.

To simplify your workout routine, we consulted with Adam Dobrez, a personal trainer and owner of Red Fox Gym. Dobrez specializes in helping older adults enhance their strength and overall well-being. He recommends five straightforward gym exercises that can effectively restore core strength more efficiently than traditional floor workouts for those over 60.

According to Dobrez, “Core exercises for those over 60 should focus on improving balance, posture, and stability, incorporating movements that mimic everyday activities.” He emphasizes training the core to support balance, protect the spine, and maintain posture during various movements. Dobrez notes that conventional floor-based abdominal workouts can be challenging for older adults, especially if they have neck pain, stiffness, limited mobility, or lower back issues. These exercises often concentrate on spinal flexion rather than teaching the body proper stabilization techniques.

“Instead of just ‘feeling the burn,’ core exercises after 60 should promote balance, posture, stability and use everyday real-life movements,” Dobrez stresses. “I suggest training the core in the way it is actually used in daily life. This looks like supporting balance, protecting the spine, and maintaining posture during your movements. Traditional floor-based ab workouts can be uncomfortable for older adults—especially if they’re experiencing neck pain, stiffness, limited mobility or lower back issues. Floor-based workouts focus on spinal flexion rather than training the body how to properly stabilize.”

Below, Dobrez shares four simple moves to add to your gym day routine.

Step-Ups

  1. Begin by standing tall, facing a workout bench.
  2. Hold an optional dumbbell in each hand.
  3. Place your left foot firmly onto the surface, keeping your core engaged and chest tall.
  4. Press through your left heel to lift your body until your left leg is straight and you’re standing on the surface.
  5. Use control to lower back to the start position.
  6. Repeat on the other side.

Farmer’s Carry

  1. Stand tall, holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. Start walking forward, keeping your torso still and maintaining an elevated heel position.

Standing Cable Rows

  1. Set a cable handle to chest height.
  2. Grab the handle, take a step back, and stand facing the cable.
  3. Start the movement by pulling your shoulder blades toward your midline and row without twisting your torso.
  4. Use the control to return to the start position.

Standing Cable Paloff Press

  1. Stand tall, perpendicular to an anchor point, with your feet hip-width apart and a soft bend in your knees.
  2. Hold the cable at chest level.
  3. Breathe out as you extend your arms ahead of you, resisting rotation.
  4. Return your arms back to the starting position.

Emotional Wedding Moment: Callum Turner Sheds Tears at Nuptials with Dua Lipa

0

Dua Lipa’s breathtaking wedding attire reportedly brought her husband, Callum Turner, to tears as they tied the knot at a London registry office on Sunday.

The couple shared their vows in an intimate ceremony at the renowned Marylebone Town Hall, with only eight guests in attendance. This understated event was a prelude to a grand three-day celebration set to unfold in Sicily this coming weekend.

Insiders have disclosed that Callum was visibly moved, even shaking, as he watched Dua make her way down the aisle, surrounded by her family—parents Dukagjin and Anesa, sister Rina, and brother Gjin.

An observer noted that “he was in tears and shaky,” indicating the emotional impact of the moment.

Despite the presence of the famous couple, passersby paid little extra attention, although Dua’s security team was seen surveying the area before she and Callum left the registry office.

The newlyweds left in a simple black cab before enjoying a quiet family dinner to celebrate.

Dua Lipa’s stunning legal wedding outfit reportedly moved her husband Callum Turner to tears, as the couple married in a London registry office on Sunday

A source told The Sun: ‘Dua and Callum said their vows in a ceremony with their closest family and friends. Last night they had a quiet celebration dinner. It was chic and simple — exactly as Dua and Callum wanted.

‘Dua’s dad and manager Dugi is a massive Arsenal fan so there were a few jokes made about the timing, as the Premier League victory parade was happening at the same time not far away. Both him and Dua’s mum Anesa were beaming with pride.

‘The celebration was relatively low-key as they fly to Sicily this week for their second, big wedding.’

Dua radiated bridal elegance in a custom Schiaparelli skirt suit, white gloves, a Bulgari necklace, and a wide-brimmed white hat, designed by milliner Stephen Jones.

The Houdini singer clutched a yellow bouquet and wore white Louboutin heels while strolling out of the registry office hand in hand with her new husband.

Meanwhile, Callum made for a dapper groom in a fitted navy suit.

Dua appeared to be channelling Bianca Jagger with her bridal look, which exuded 70s glamour.

When former actress Bianca married music legend Mick Jagger in 1971, she rocked a white Yves Saint Laurent tuxedo and a long bias-cut silk skirt. She accessorised with an oversized hat.

Dua and Callum were cheered on by close family before jumping into the back of a black cab and embracing as they were whisked away to start married life together.

Family members joked about Dua’s unostentatious departure from the wedding, saying she wanted a black cab for her big day.

The singer had arrived in a green Land Rover and entered with a friend while Callum arrived separately.

The ceremony only lasted 30-40 minutes and Callum grinned boyishly as he held his new wife’s hand in his and walked her down the steps under a rainbow of confetti.

Having exchanged vows they are now legally wed ahead of their big party in Sicily’s capital Palermo, which is set to last from Thursday to Saturday.

Ahead of the ceremony, insiders have been hailing the couple’s nuptials as the ‘showbiz wedding of the year’, calling it Sicily’s most high-profile marriage since Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone wed Apollonia Vitelli in 1972 classic The Godfather.

No expense has been spared for the big day, with the pair said to have booked an entire floor of suites at the luxurious Villa Igiea hotel overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The ceremony itself will take place at the 17th-century Villa Valguarnera, perhaps the most sumptuous of the villas in Bagheria, an idyllic town ten miles away from the capital.

Sir Elton John, Mark Ronson and Charli XCX are among the music stars billed to attend, with Donatella Versace and Simon Porte Jacquemus from the fashion world.

In advance of the wedding, Dua is believed to have travelled to Italy to meet Donatella to finalise the details of the dress she is designing for the singer to wear on her big day.

Because of her longtime friendship with the designer, friends are convinced that Dua will wear a custom Atelier Versace gown.

A source close to the wedding told the Daily Mail’s Katie Hind: ‘This is going to be the coolest wedding, and so glam.

‘Both Dua and Callum have been so excited and have been really involved with the planning. They want it to be epic.’

Last year, while confirming the news, Dua shared her joy with British Vogue, saying: ‘Yeah we’re engaged. It’s very exciting…

‘This decision to grow old together, to see a life and just, I don’t know, be best friends forever — it’s a really special feeling.’

Speaking of their wedding plans, Dua said she hoped to finish her tour and Callum to wrap up filming before they tie the knot.

While the wedding hadn’t been at the forefront of her mind amid her busy schedule touring, she did admit she has started to think about her dress.

She said: ‘I want to finish my tour, Callum’s shooting, so we’re just enjoying this period…

‘I’ve never been someone who’s really thought about a wedding, or dreamt about what kind of bride I would be. All of a sudden, I’m like: “Oh, what would I wear?”‘

Dua said she’s ‘obsessed’ with her engagement ring, before saying: ‘It’s nice to know the person that you’re going to spend the rest of your life with knows you very well.’

The Dance the Night Away hitmaker also shared that she is keen to have a family of her own but admitted she doesn’t know when would be a ‘good time’ because of the demands of her pop career.

She said: ‘I’d love to have kids one day.

‘But it’s like the constant question of when would there ever be a good time – how it would fit in with my job and how it would work if I went on tour, and how much time out I’d have to take.’

While the year has got off to a good start for newlyweds Dua and Callum, it could get even better if Callum lands the coveted James Bond job.

Sources have told the Daily Mail that Callum – the bookies’ odds-on favourite to take over from Daniel Craig – has been telling friends the role is his.

One source close to the Fantastic Beasts star said: ‘He’s been blabbing all over town. Callum is the new Bond, it’s been confirmed. Everyone in his circle is talking about it. It’s the worst-kept secret going.’

Max Schuemann Provides Yankees with a Vital Boost in Uncommon Start

0

In West Sacramento, California, Max Schuemann seized a rare opportunity to start this past Sunday afternoon, making a memorable impact against his former team. With a left-handed pitcher on the mound, Schuemann, who previously played as a utilityman for the A’s, was slotted into the lineup at second base, filling in for Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Schuemann didn’t disappoint, delivering a solid performance by going 1-for-3, drawing a walk, and hitting a two-run double. His efforts contributed significantly to the Yankees’ commanding 13-8 victory. Manager Aaron Boone praised Schuemann’s contribution, noting, “He provided a good spark. I knew he’d give us good at-bats, and he did. It was great to see him play such a meaningful role.”

This season, Schuemann has demonstrated his capability by drawing seven walks in just 24 plate appearances, maintaining an impressive .294 batting average with a .971 OPS. His recent call-up last month has seen him thrive in limited opportunities.

With Amed Rosario on the paternity list, Schuemann capitalized on the chance to shine. During the Yankees’ explosive 13-run third inning, Schuemann was instrumental, drawing a patient seven-pitch walk after Anthony Volpe set the stage with a leadoff single against lefty Jacob Lopez.

Taking advantage of Amed Rosario being on the paternity list, Schuemann was right in the thick of the Yankees’ 13-run third inning, drawing a seven-pitch walk against lefty Jacob Lopez after Anthony Volpe led off with a single.

In his second at-bat of the inning — still with no outs, this time against righty Michael Kelly — Schuemann drilled a two-strike double over the third baseman’s head to put the Yankees up 10-3.

“[Schuemann] has done a good job, he really has,” Boone said. “His versatility, obviously it’s been a lot of defensive replacements or pinch-running situations. The at-bats he’s given has been excellent. … That’s something we noticed in spring. We feel like he can put together a good at-bat.”

Jen Pawol, the New Jersey native, former Hofstra softball player and first female umpire in Major League Baseball, was behind the plate calling balls and strikes Sunday.

“I think she did great, especially when we win,” Aaron Judge said with a grin. “I think she did great. I had her in spring training, I think once or twice, I don’t know if it was last year or this year. She’s on top of it. She’s locked in back there. A couple times, I asked her about a couple pitches, if they were down or if that’s the bottom, and she was right there locked in.”

Pawol, a full-time Triple-A umpire who was called up for the weekend series, made her MLB debut last summer.

The Yankees thought they should have been out of the first inning Sunday when Tyler Soderstrom grounded a potential double play ball to second base with one out.

But the 6-foot-5 Nick Kurtz, running to second, trailed off toward the third base side and got in Anthony Volpe’s way of throwing to first to finish it off.

Boone argued on the field that Kurtz should have been called for interference, but the umpires disagreed.

“The rule is that it has to be intentional,” Volpe said. “I didn’t really understand it. They understood it was just a weird play, but I think by the letter of the law, they couldn’t really do anything.”

Ryan Weathers and the Yankees were gifted a free strike in the fourth inning Saturday on a pitch that was out of the zone.

Soderstrom challenged it, but there was a glitch in the automated ball-strike system, as it froze on the scoreboard and never showed whether the pitch was a ball or a strike.

Home plate umpire Adam Beck eventually announced that his initial call of a strike was upheld despite the zone on MLB.com appearing to show it as a ball.

“My understanding was that we got one,” Boone said Sunday morning with a chuckle.

Perry County Fugitive Captured in Midfield After Escape

0

In a dramatic turn of events in Midfield, Alabama, law enforcement officers successfully apprehended an escapee from Perry County on Sunday. The Midfield Police Department confirmed the arrest, which occurred after a routine patrol encountered a stolen vehicle.

Around 4:30 p.m., officers patrolling the 600 block of Bessemer Super Highway were notified by the cutting-edge Flock System, which had identified a stolen 2012 Acura. The vehicle was reported stolen in Selma just the day before, on Saturday.

Upon investigation, officers identified the driver as Johnny Dave Harris Bush Jr., who was not only linked to the stolen vehicle but was also a fugitive wanted by the US Marshals Office for escaping custody. This fortuitous encounter led to Bush’s immediate arrest.

Bush now faces charges of receiving stolen property and is being held at Jefferson County Jail. He is set to be extradited back to Perry County to face further legal proceedings.

Midfield Police Chief Michael Jeffries highlighted the significance of this arrest, attributing it to the advanced technology and proactive policing strategies employed by his team. “This demonstrates the value of modern technology and proactive policing efforts,” Chief Jeffries stated. “The Flock System continues to be an effective tool in helping our officers apprehend perpetrators and enhance public safety. We are proud of the professionalism displayed by our officers and our partnership with our law enforcement partners.”

Fireworks Allegedly Spark Horse Stampede in Rome, Resulting in Soldier Injuries

Unauthorized fireworks in Rome are believed to have caused a chaotic stampede among horses during a late-night rehearsal for Italy’s Republic Day parade, leaving several riders and animals injured. The incident unfolded near the historic Baths of Caracalla, where mounted units from Italy’s armed forces and law enforcement were preparing for the national celebration set for June 2, as reported by Reuters.

The sudden explosion of fireworks startled approximately 35 horses, prompting them to bolt through the city streets. Witnesses captured the frenzy on video, showing the horses racing along Via Cristoforo Colombo, with drivers watching in disbelief as the scene unfolded.

Efforts to locate and recover the fleeing horses continued throughout the night, with the final horse being found around nine miles from the initial location by dawn the following day.

In a dramatic image captured by Lucio Virzi Fotografo for REUTERS, a runaway horse is seen galloping down a road during the ceremonial rehearsal in Rome, adding a visual testament to the unexpected turmoil of the night.

According to Reuters, the sudden bangs began shortly before 11:30 p.m. and triggered panic among the ceremonial horses, many of which were being escorted by Italy’s Army, Carabinieri paramilitary police, and state police.

Some riders were mounted, while others were leading horses by hand when the startled animals broke free, the outlet said.

During the chaos, a 22-year-old soldier reportedly suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, though officials said his injuries were not life-threatening. At least 15 horses were also injured, though none required euthanasia, according to reports.

Italian outlet ANSA said the stampede injured three young soldiers from the Montebello Lancers and a 29-year-old policewoman.

Officials are reviewing how the unauthorized fireworks were ignited near the rehearsal site.

The Rome Local Police Command said four traffic police officers were involved in the incident and were reportedly near the firecrackers when the explosion occurred, ANSA said.

Officials said one of the officers allegedly lit a battery of fireworks about 200 yards from the horses, the outlet reported. The officer was identified as a 50-year-old who joined the force after passing the most recent exam.

Video footage and witness statements suggest the explosions and the horses’ escape occurred simultaneously, according to the local report.

Rome police commander Mario De Sclavis told Corriere della Sera that the incident “discredits the image of the Corps and its officers,” according to Reuters.

Sclavis added that the agency will take “necessary measures” to hold those responsible accountable, according to ANSA.

“Last night’s events hit us like a tsunami,” he said.
