Tragic Shooting at San Diego Mosque Claims Five Lives

0

IN BRIEF

  • The Islamic centre targeted is the largest mosque in San Diego county.
  • Police discovered the bodies of two teenage males in a vehicle, dead from apparently self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

A tragic shooting occurred at a mosque complex in California, resulting in three fatalities on Tuesday, AEST. Authorities later discovered two teenage suspects deceased in a vehicle, both having succumbed to self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Responding to the incident, police located the victims outside the expansive Islamic Center of San Diego. The alleged shooters, aged 19 and 17, were subsequently found dead.

Aerial footage captured by TV helicopters depicted armed response units converging on the scene, where one individual was seen lying in a pool of blood.

The Islamic Center, recognized as the largest mosque in San Diego County, was surrounded by numerous patrol cars during the incident in southern California.

Following a brief lockdown with authorities advising residents to remain indoors, the San Diego police confirmed that the situation at the center had been “neutralized.”

“We received a call of an active shooter at the Islamic centre. Within four minutes, officers arrived on scene and observed immediately three deceased victims out in front,” San Diego police chief Scott Wahl told reporters.

“We immediately began to deploy with an active shooter response into the mosque and adjacent school,” he said, adding that police had received calls about more gunfire nearby, where a landscaper at work had been shot at but not hit.

All of the children who were attending a day school that is part of the mosque complex were accounted for and safe after the shooting, Wahl said.

He said the FBI was called in to assist in the investigation of the incident, which the police chief said authorities were treating as a hate crime.

Place of worship targeted

Outside the Islamic centre, police found a vehicle in the middle of the street with the alleged shooters dead inside.

“The suspects at this point appear to have died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds. There were no officers involved in firing their weapons,” Wahl said.

Police said that a security guard at the Islamic centre was among the three victims killed. The identity of the other two fatalities was not immediately clear.

The attack came the week before the major Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha and the annual Hajj pilgrimage of Islamic faithful to the holy site of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

The imam at the mosque, Taha Hassane, said that all the staff, teachers and children at the mosque were safe.

“We have never experienced tragedy like this before. And at this moment all that I can say is, sending our prayers and standing in solidarity with all the families in our community here,” he said.

“It is extremely outrageous to target a place of worship,” the imam added.

US President Donald Trump described the shooting as a “terrible situation”.

“I’ve been given some early updates but we’re going to be going back and looking at it very strongly,” he told reporters.

State governor Gavin Newsom was briefed on the apparent attack, his press office said.

Monica, Ant Wilson, and Laiyah Brown Attend Ty Young’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Monica, along with Anthony “Ant” Wilson and Laiyah Brown, made a fashionable appearance to honor Tamera “Ty” Young, who was recently inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.

On Monday, Monica took to Instagram to share a collection of photos from the celebratory event.

One snapshot featured the singer alongside Wilson and Laiyah, all smiles outside the venue. Monica and her daughter were twinning in matching green dresses, while Wilson sported a white tuxedo jacket with black lapels, paired with black pants.

Another image captured a moment between Monica and Young as they posed next to a classic luxury car.

In the caption, Monica expressed her sentiments: “F•A•M•I•L•Y ….Unbreakable Bonds & Immeasurable Love.”

She added, “Congratulations on Your Induction @tyyoung We Love You…. #HometownHero #Family”

Young thanked Monica and her family in the comments section of the post.

Uncover These 6 Hidden Gem Musical Biopics on Netflix After Watching ‘Michael

The musical biopic Michael, though not a critical darling, has resonated strongly with viewers worldwide.

The film, featuring Jaffar Jackson—Michael Jackson’s nephew—as the iconic pop star, has already amassed over $614 million globally. With Antoine Fuqua at the helm, industry analysts are forecasting that its earnings could climb to $1 billion. Should this prediction come true, it could dethrone 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest-grossing musical biopic to date.

The film’s impressive box office run is no shocker, considering Michael Jackson’s enduring appeal and legacy, despite his controversial life. While few musical biopics achieve such blockbuster success, they still offer captivating stories. Here are six overlooked musician biopics you can watch on Netflix right now.

‘Bob Marley: One Love’

For instance, if you missed the 2024 Bob Marley biopic in theaters, it’s now available for streaming on Netflix. Starring Kingsley Ben-Adair as the legendary reggae artist who passed away in 1981, the film, much like Michael, received lukewarm critical reviews but boasts a 90% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes.

Helen Reddy’s empowering 1971 anthem “I Am Woman” is well-known, but her life story, depicted in a 2019 film, might surprise you. Starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey, the movie follows Reddy’s journey from Australia to New York with her young daughter, determined to pursue a singing career. Her rise to fame is peppered with personal challenges, including a rocky marriage threatening her professional path.

‘I Am Woman’

You’re probably familiar with Helen Reddy’s 1971 feminist anthem “I Am Woman.” But you might not know Reddy’s story, which is chronicled in this 2019 film. Tilda Cobham-Hervey plays Reddy, who moves from Australia to New York with her 3-year-old daughter, intent on becoming a professional singer. She eventually finds success, but struggles with personal problems, including a troubled marriage that threatens to derail her career.

‘Roxanne Roxanne’

Chanté Adams plays pioneering hip-hop artist and “Roxanne’s Revenge” rapper Roxanne Shanté in this 2018 Netflix movie, which also features Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali in a supporting role. In a review, Variety called it “a skillful and ironically gripping coming-of-age movie: a hip-hop anti-biopic.”

‘Maria’

Any movie with Angelina Jolie in the title role isn’t exactly under-the-radar. But even though Maria, a 2024 biopic about opera singer Maria Callas, earned strong reviews from critics, it was snubbed at the Oscars and might have been overlooked by many viewers. However, that doesn’t mean this movie from Spencer and Jackie director Pablo Larrain isn’t worth checking out, particularly for Jolie’s performance as the famous diva.

‘Kneecap’

This unconventional biopic chronicles the rise of Kneecap, an Irish hip-hop trio from Belfast. (The members of the group play themselves in the film.) Kneecap raps in Irish, making their performances an inherently political act in a part of the U.K. where the native language was once banned, leading to its near-eradication.

Kneecap leaves Netflix on June 1.

‘The Dirt’

If you’re in the mood for some old-fashioned ‘80s sleaze, look no further than The Dirt, Netflix’s 2019 movie about hair metal rockers Mötley Crüe. The movie – which is based on Neil Strauss’ 2001 oral history of the band – stars Douglas Booth as Nikki Sixx, Colson Baker as Tommy Lee, Daniel Webber as Vince Neil, and Iwan Rheon as Mick Mars. The movie features plenty of scenes involving the rock-and-roll debauchery the band was infamous for, along with touching on the darker moments in their history, including Neil’s involvement in a fatal drunk driving accident and Sixx’s near-fatal heroin overdose.

Intense Showdowns: Dodgers vs. Padres Rivalry Heats Up in Baseball

0

In recent years, the San Diego Padres have consistently found themselves in the mix, ever-present and poised to make their mark.

They hover in the standings, edge closer to playoff glory, and remain a constant presence, challenging the dominance of the Los Angeles Dodgers. This rivalry has, in subtle ways, motivated the Dodgers, pushing them to maintain their dynasty.

Undoubtedly, both Southern California teams have tasted success.

Moreover, the rivalry between them has emerged as one of the most intense in baseball today, with no love lost on either side.

Yet, having the Padres as a persistent challenger, a formidable opponent within the division, has been beneficial for the Dodgers. This dynamic has spurred them to greater heights during their remarkable rise over the past five years.

“When you have a team like that … trying to take us down, it’s not pressure, because we’re not gonna feel pressure just because of that, but we do have to feel like we gotta keep our foot on the gas pedal,” veteran infielder Miguel Rojas said. “It’s definitely a good thing that we have a team in the same division, that is not letting us get our guard down.”

Early on this season, that familiar dynamic is playing out again.

Ahead of their first meeting of the year at Petco Park on Monday night, the Padres trailed the Dodgers by just a half-game in the National League West.

Granted, no one is paying much attention to the standings at this point. And before this week’s series opener, the Dodgers downplayed the significance of what remains little more than a mid-May divisional matchup.

“It’s always an eventful series coming down here and playing these guys,” manager Dave Roberts said. “But I certainly wouldn’t consider it a measuring stick.”

Then again, it’s impossible to ignore what is shaping up to be another intriguing NL West battle between the teams.

“I think we would expect a good race throughout the season,” Roberts said.

As has been the case so often in recent years, the Padres are right there once again.

“I think that we bring out the best in them, and they bring out the best in us,” he noted on the eve of this week’s series. “So I think it’s good for us. I think it’s good for baseball. I think it’s good for Southern California.”

Prior to this decade, the Dodgers and Padres rarely occupied the same plane.

In their first 51 years together in the NL West, there were only two seasons (1996 and 2006) in which they finished as the top two teams in the division.

Since 2020, however, that has been the case five times, including each of the past three campaigns. And in October, they have collided in three memorable NL Division Series meetings.

Chief among them was the Padres’ 2022 NLDS upset, which served as a look-in-the-mirror moment for a Dodgers squad that felt it failed to match the Padres’ intensity in that stunning four-game elimination.

Then came the Dodgers’ come-from-behind triumph over San Diego in the 2024 NLDS, an emotional launching point in the team’s path to back-to-back World Series titles.

“Coming back against San Diego in that series –– it was only five games, but it felt like a 162-game season,” Kiké Hernández said during last year’s playoff run, pointing to that as the moment the Dodgers (who were once defined by their October failures) learned how to better navigate postseason baseball. “You get this feeling of like, ‘Nothing can go wrong. We’re not losing’ … That’s sort of similar to the mentality we have as a group.”

There was no postseason rematch last fall, when the Padres were knocked out in the wild-card round while the Dodgers once again returned to the mountaintop.

But in the regular season, the Padres came as close as ever to unseating the Dodgers atop the division, holding first place as late as Aug. 23 as the Dodgers toiled through a second-half slump.

That’s the kind of thing, Rojas said, that has quietly benefited the Dodgers during the rise of their dynasty.

“What the last three years have taught me is, you gotta feel that sensation that you play with in the playoffs, within the (regular) season at some point,” he explained. “And (games against) the Padres are the same way. We go to the Padres, and we feel like, ‘OK, we need to win this series.’ Those are the kinds of things that prepare you for what is coming next.”

Hostilities between the sides have only added fuel to such fire.

From Manny Machado throwing a ball in Roberts’ direction during the 2024 NLDS. To a flurry of hit batsmen during a series at Dodger Stadium last June that led to a benches-clearing melee at which Roberts and then-Padres manager Mike Schildt were in the center. To even a string of back-and-forth jabs players from both teams have lobbed at each other through the media; so much so, one Dodgers player on Monday declined answering a question about the Padres, quipping they didn’t want to get themselves in trouble.

“This series,” Roberts said, “gets emotional, gets heightened.”

For the Dodgers, that has been a good thing in recent years, giving the team labeled as baseball’s biggest villain an antagonist of their own with whom they can sharpen iron.

“It’s just another three games in the regular season. You have to see it that way, so you don’t overreact,” Rojas said. “But it’s definitely a different series, for sure.”

Heroic Security Guard Loses Life in Valiant Effort to Save Others During Mosque Shooting

0

A brave security guard lost his life while attempting to protect others during a tragic shooting at a mosque in California. The incident involved two teenage gunmen.

Amin Abdullah, a devoted father of eight, was tragically among the victims when Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18, launched an attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont. The shooting occurred around 11:40 a.m. on Monday, as reported by NBC News.

Displaying remarkable courage, Abdullah acted swiftly to shield others from harm, according to Police Chief Scott Wahl, who addressed the media at a news conference.

“We believe the security guard’s quick response helped contain the situation to the entrance area of the mosque,” Wahl stated on Monday evening.

“It’s clear that his actions were nothing short of heroic,” Wahl added. “Without a doubt, he saved lives today.”

Anees Faraj, a security guard who has worked at the mosque off and on for over 10 years, told the Daily Mail the guard shot dead in the attack was named Amin, and he had eight children.

Faraj, whose comments were translated from Arabic by his daughter Basmah, said he was not working today and so was lucky to have avoided the attack himself.

He said he had never experienced anything like it during his years of work for the mosque.

Faraj has been a licensed security guard since 2013.

‘A friend of mine, a regular worshipper at the mosque, told me about the news,’ he said. ‘It is very shocking.’

His daughter described Faraj shaking his head in disbelief at the deadly shooting, allegedly perpetrated by two teens.

Two others were also found dead outside the mosque when authorities responded to the scene and started searching for the suspects, who were later found dead inside a vehicle of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Authorities said the chaotic chain of events began Monday morning when they received a phone call from a mother who reported that her teenage son had run away with several weapons.

She claimed he was suicidal and had left behind a note, the contents of which Wahl said he would not disclose – though he said authorities are now probing anti-Islamic writings suspects Clark and Caleb Vazquez left behind.

‘That began to trigger a larger threat assessment picture,’ Wahl said. ‘Our threat management unit began to take the tips and leads that we had and utilize the technology we have available to us.’

Police then responded to the mosque within four minutes of receiving a call about shots fired, with up to 100 officers combing the building for the suspects.

But the two teenagers had fled the scene following the shooting. They were found dead inside a vehicle a short time later of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

A landscaper at a house nearby was also shot during the rampage, but survived. It is believed a bullet ricocheted off of the helmet he was wearing at the time.

Fortunately, no children were injured during the shooting, the imam of the mosque confirmed.

The Muslim place of worship is also home to the Al Rashid school, which was formerly known as the Islamic School of San Diego.

Kids in kindergarten through third grade attend the school.

‘The entire school is safe. All the kids, all the staff and the teachers are safe out of the Islamic Center,’ Imam Taha Hassane said in a Facebook video update.

‘We have a few casualties, not confirmed yet. There is no threat at this moment, but we want everyone to stay away from the Islamic Center of San Diego.’

The shooting at the San Diego Islamic Center came at the beginning of Dhu’l-Hijja today, one of the holiest months on the Muslim calendar

It translates to ‘month of the pilgrimage’ and marks a time when millions of Muslims across the world embark on the Hajj, an annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Following the shooting, California Governor Gavin Newsom said he and his wife were left ‘horrified by today’s violent attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego, where families and children gather, and neighbors worship in peace and fellowship.

‘Today, this community space was shattered by gunfire.

‘California sends our deepest condolences to the families and communities impacted by today’s shooting,’ the governor continued.

‘Worshippers anywhere should not have to fear for their lives. Hate has no place in California, and we will not tolerate acts of terror or intimidation against communities of faith.

‘Thank you to the brave law enforcement officers and first responders who acted swiftly to protect the children and worshippers.

‘To the San Diego Muslim community: California stands with you.’

President Donald Trump also called the shooting a ‘terrible situation.’

He said he has been briefed on the incident, but vowed: ‘We’re going to be going back and looking at it very strongly.’

The Islamic Center of San Diego is the largest mosque in San Diego County, with around 5,000 members.

Urgent Evacuations as Sandy Fire Rapidly Engulfs Hundreds of Acres in Simi Valley, Southern California

0

A swiftly advancing brush fire in Southern California led authorities to order evacuations on Monday.

The blaze, known as the Sandy Fire, ignited at approximately 10:50 a.m., according to the Ventura County Fire Department. In response, air tankers and additional resources were called in to combat the fire. By Monday afternoon, the fire had spread across more than 800 acres, posing a threat to nearby properties.

Residents in specific areas of Simi Valley, approximately 41 miles northwest of Los Angeles, and parts of the Thousand Oaks region were instructed to evacuate.

The Sandy Fire with smoke in the sky.

“We have a robust presence of air support available,” stated a spokesperson from the fire department during an interview with “America Reports.”

“We have a good number of air resources on hand,” a fire department spokesperson told “America Reports.”

Around 500 personnel were battling the fire, as well as five helicopters and three air tankers, he said. Winds were gusting at 10 mph, with northeast Santa Ana winds expected to continue for the next few hours and weaken through the afternoon, before shifting onshore from the southwest fairly around 4 p.m.

Warm and dry conditions are expected to continue through Tuesday.

A driver operating a tractor struck a rock, sparking the brush fire in Ventura County, police said. The Simi Valley Police Department received a call around 10:17 a.m. from an individual reporting they had hit a rock with the machinery.

That spark quickly ignited the brush, which then expanded into the Sandy Fire, according to Sgt. Rick Morton. While an investigation into the incident remains ongoing, authorities do not believe criminal activity was involved, Morton said.

Air crews were making “aggressive” water and retardant drops in support of crews on the ground, the fire department said. A temporary evacuation point is being established at the Rancho Santa Susana Community Park in Simi Valley, fire officials said.

Meanwhile, mutual aid fire engines were arriving from across the region to assist with containment efforts, officials said.

In addition to the Sandy Fire, two wildfires broke out in the Antelope Valley north of Los Angeles over the weekend. Both of those fires have since been fully contained. In the Angeles National Forest, the Burro Fire broke out Monday afternoon, expanding to at least 30 acres, authorities said.

Firefighters there were busy battling that blaze in neighboring Los Angeles County.

The region is still reeling from the catastrophic 2025 Palisades and Eaton fires that exploded in size within hours of each other on Jan. 7, 2025.

Insiders Share John McGinn’s Transformation from Underrated Talent to Unai Emery’s Star Player Through Diet Change, Earning Admiration as Aston Villa’s ‘Silent Leader

“Miles off it.” That’s how two key figures from Aston Villa’s recent history described their initial impressions of John McGinn.

While former team captain Jack Grealish was commenting on McGinn’s humor rather than his football skills, manager Unai Emery believed McGinn had work to do on the field to meet his high standards.

Grealish, who departed Villa five years ago, might have his own thoughts on McGinn’s current locker room banter. Yet Emery’s views on McGinn are clear and publicly evident.

“He’s very intelligent,” Emery states. “Adapting to perform at the highest level required effort from him, and he achieved it by altering his lifestyle, training methods, and game approach.”

Emery continues, “In the early stages of his Villa career, the team didn’t perform at our present level. We needed to elevate our expectations and standards, and he rose to the challenge.”

‘He is very intelligent,’ says Villa manager Unai Emery of his captain John McGinn. ‘Adapting to play at the highest level was an effort for him... but he has done it'

If Villa beat Freiburg in the Europa League final on Wednesday, McGinn will be their first captain to lift a major trophy since Andy Townsend, who led Villa to the League Cup in 1996

If Villa beat Freiburg in the Europa League final on Wednesday, McGinn will be their first captain to lift a major trophy since Andy Townsend, who led Villa to the League Cup in 1996

‘Now our objective is to be protagonists in the Champions League but to keep this level we need responsible, mature players who are fighters and hard workers. John McGinn has changed completely to adapt to this new way for him.’

McGinn has always been respected by his opponents. Soon after Villa had returned to the Premier League seven years ago, Manchester United – where his fellow Scot Sir Alex Ferguson remained influential – were said to have expressed an interest.

So too Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp known to be a fan. Newcastle and Everton tried to sign McGinn last summer and after the first leg of the Europa League semi-final, Nottingham Forest boss Vitor Pereira told McGinn in the tunnel at the City Ground that he had spent hours trying to figure out how to stop him.

Yet when Emery arrived, there were plenty who believed McGinn would struggle to last the course under an elite coach with exacting requirements. This is how he proved them wrong.

McGinn has never forgotten those doubters. He is praised universally these days but still he can recall being dropped by caretaker boss Aaron Danks in the gap between the Steven Gerrard and Emery regimes in autumn 2022.

But back then, did McGinn himself believe he would make it this far? He recently namechecked former Villa boss Dean Smith for convincing him he could play in the Premier League.

‘I always felt the talent was there,’ Smith, who was in charge when Villa won promotion in 2019, tells Daily Mail Sport. ‘He is underrated. He has an awkward running action that can obscure how talented he is. He can hold on to the ball, he has a great shimmy that can take him past a man, he can pass short and long.

‘He can play as a No 6, a No 8 or off the side. He is a funny guy and doesn’t take himself too seriously. If he’s ever lacked confidence, you wouldn’t know it. I love him to bits. When we went to Minnesota for pre-season in 2019, he was talking about a new deal with the club and I was pushing for it. John was aware I was backing him for that contract. He knew his value.’

Emery thought McGinn needed to be careful what he ate. ‘You’re not 21 anymore’ was the basic message

Emery thought McGinn needed to be careful what he ate. ‘You’re not 21 anymore’ was the basic message

When McGinn turned 27 in October 2021, he arrived at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath training ground with a selection of cakes. Whether McGinn himself ate one or not, it is hard to imagine him doing so under Emery – or even bringing them in the first place.

Put simply, Emery thought McGinn needed to be careful what he ate. ‘You’re not 21 anymore’ was the basic message. Not only did McGinn do as he was told, he also wowed Emery instantly with his tactical awareness.

Emery’s methods are exhausting and complicated, but McGinn is a star pupil. Along with Morgan Rogers, Emery regards McGinn as Villa’s most tactically intelligent player. He has operated on the left, the right, as a No 10 or as part of a central pair. When Emery urged him to find more attacking positions around the turn of the year, McGinn duly scored twice in a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest on January 3.

Don’t be fooled by the cheerful demeanour, either. In response to Emery’s remarks about his lifestyle, McGinn hired a personal chef he still employs today. He goes for long runs and does gym work throughout the off-season.

The day after Villa lost 1-0 to Forest in the first leg of the Europa semi-final, McGinn was so angry that he conducted his own review of the game the following day. He emerged convinced Villa would reach the final – and promptly scored twice as they blew Forest away 4-0 at Villa Park.

McGinn and other Villa stars compare playing for Emery to being an elite chess player. The analysis is so deep that at the start of any game, they have their opening gambits off by heart. Freiburg coach Julian Schuster has his work cut out to avoid checkmate.

Villa fans did not enjoy Gerrard’s year in charge but the former England captain deserves credit for making McGinn his captain in summer 2022, taking the armband from Tyrone Mings. At first it seemed a strange call. Smith always believed that captaincy made Mings a better player whereas McGinn’s performances would be unaffected either way. Then Mings is naturally a more forceful personality than McGinn.

Were the Villa squad sent into the jungle for three days and told to survive as best they could, Mings would inevitably take the lead. In the very early days of his captaincy, it is thought McGinn would even feel awkward about delivering the traditional ‘rallying cry’. He has no such qualms now, especially since he was also made Scotland’s captain in the same summer.

‘He is like a silent leader on the pitch,’ says Villa teammate Matty Cash (No 2). ‘He is not massively vocal but he gives us so much energy’

‘He is probably one of the best midfielders in the Premier League,’ argues Villa right back Matty Cash. ‘He is like a silent leader on the pitch. He is not massively vocal but he gives us so much energy. Then he is very good around the training ground, with the club and the players.

‘He is a fantastic captain and nobody deserves it more. He is the longest-serving player here along with Ty (Mings) and a trophy would top it for him.’

As Cash hints, McGinn helps hold the club together. The down-to-earth demeanour has not been altered by wealth, nor his self-deprecating wit dulled by success. The phrase is used too often about public figures but with McGinn it is true – he really is just a normal bloke.

Come rain or shine, win, lose or draw, McGinn will try to sign every autograph and pose for every picture with supporters. He is as comfortable with supporters as he is when joining executives on stage at a commercial event.

On one pre-season trip abroad, an evening out was organised and club staff were uncertain whether they could join the squad. When he found out, McGinn instantly told them they could. If they win on Wednesday, he will be the life and soul of the party.

Under Emery, McGinn has created more chances (167) and won more duels (716) than any other Villa player. He also ranks second for dribbles completed (163) and passes into the box (507). Only Ezri Konsa (623) has won possession more times than McGinn, who has managed it 594 times.

These Opta statistics tell the story of an all-round midfielder and explain why McGinn has been wanted by so many other clubs. Ferguson had noted that Villa paid Hibernian only £2million for McGinn in 2018 and wondered how a top Scottish talent had travelled under United’s radar. Had McGinn not suffered a broken leg in December 2019, he may now be at Old Trafford.

There could have been a move to Anfield, too. Klopp loved what he saw from McGinn, who he believed could inherit the role played by Jordan Henderson both on and off the pitch.

Last summer, it might have made financial sense to sell McGinn, who was 30, to Newcastle and give a new contract to Jacob Ramsey, who is seven years younger. That was never going to happen under Emery, who had always liked Ramsey but knew he was no McGinn.

Sure enough, Ramsey left for about £40million and McGinn was handed a new three-year deal last November, which will take him past his 34th birthday. McGinn had an offer on the table from Everton, too, but David Moyes did not really stand a chance of landing his man.

‘John is a great person,’ reflects former Villa chief executive Christian Purslow. ‘He has a wonderful family and is a really decent, humble man. He is almost a throwback to an era where footballers’ lives were not so different from fans.

‘When he is not in the team, they miss his character, drive and leadership. One day there will be a statue if he can lift the trophy in Istanbul.’

Never mind ‘miles off it’. Where McGinn is concerned, most players struggle just to keep up. One more win and immortality awaits.

Kaitlin Olson Honors Her Late Father, Her ‘Forever Favorite Person

Kaitlin Olson, known for her role in High Potential, is grieving the loss of her father, Don Olson.

“Honestly, it feels a bit uncomfortable to share this on social media. It’s such a delicate and personal matter,” the 50-year-old actress expressed on Instagram on Monday, May 18. “But it feels even more wrong to just carry on with life as if the most devastating thing hasn’t occurred, as if everything meaningful hasn’t just come to a halt.”

She further shared, “He fought with all his strength for so long to stay with us. Right now, words seem inadequate. None can truly capture who he was. The greatest blessing of my life was having him as my dad. Perhaps the second greatest was being with him as he passed.”

Former LA Detective Mark Fuhrman, Notorious for OJ Simpson Trial Perjury, Passes Away

Mark Fuhrman, a former Los Angeles police detective whose involvement in the O.J. Simpson murder trial left an indelible mark on the American legal landscape, has passed away at the age of 74. Fuhrman’s death was confirmed by Lynn Acebedo, the chief deputy coroner in Kootenai County, Idaho, though the specific cause remains undisclosed, consistent with county policy.

In 1994, Fuhrman was one of the initial detectives dispatched to the crime scene of the brutal murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles. During his investigation, he reported discovering a bloody glove at O.J. Simpson’s residence, a piece of evidence that became central to the trial. However, his credibility was severely challenged when Simpson’s defense team suggested he harbored racial biases.

The trial took a pivotal turn during Fuhrman’s cross-examination. While on the stand, he insisted he had not used racial slurs against Black individuals in the previous decade. This claim was later undermined by recordings that revealed a history of such language, casting a shadow over his testimony and the evidence he presented.

Despite the controversy surrounding his testimony, prominent attorney Alan Dershowitz, a member of Simpson’s famed “Dream Team” defense, acknowledged Fuhrman’s investigative skills, remarking that he was “a much better detective than he was a witness.” Fuhrman’s legacy remains complex, intertwined with the high-profile trial that captivated and divided a nation.

Alan Dershowitz, a prominent lawyer and law professor who was a legal strategist on Simpson’s defense “Dream Team,” said Fuhrman was a “much better detective than he was a witness.”

“He’s very smart, and you know, a very, very aggressive detective. Ultimately his actions helped us win the O.J. case because of his use of the ‘n’ word,” Dershowitz said Monday evening. “I got to know him later, after it was all over, and we had a cordial relationship.”

Fuhrman retired from the Los Angeles Police Department after Simpson’s 1995 acquittal. He subsequently moved to Idaho with his family and set up a 20-acre (eight-hectare) farm, raising chickens, goats, sheep and llamas.

In 1996, Fuhrman was charged with perjury and pleaded no contest. He later became a TV and radio commentator and wrote the book “Murder in Brentwood” about the killings.

A criminal-court jury found Simpson, a former star NFL running back and actor, not guilty of murder in 1995, but a separate civil trial jury found him liable in 1997 for the deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million to relatives of Brown and Goldman. He served nine years in prison on unrelated charges and died in Las Vegas of prostate cancer in 2024 at the age of 76.

Kato Kaitlin, a friend of Brown who also testified in the murder trial, wrote in a post on X that he wanted to respectfully acknowledge Fuhrman’s death and that he hopes Fuhrman’s loved ones can find peace.

“While we were never close personally, our lives were indelibly linked through our roles in the O.J. Simpson trial over thirty years ago. It was a deeply complex and painful chapter for everyone involved, but any loss of life is a time for reflection and solemnity,” Kaitlin wrote.

Fuhrman’s father left when he was 7 years old, and Fuhrman often cared for his younger brother while his mother worked. As an adult, he joined the Marines and then the Los Angeles Police Department.
