Norovirus Outbreak Strikes Florida-Bound Cruise: 115 Passengers Affected – CDC Reports

In an alarming health development, over 100 individuals aboard a cruise ship that departed from Florida have been struck by norovirus, according to recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The vessel in question, the Caribbean Princess, embarked on its journey from Port Everglades on April 28 and is scheduled to make its return to Port Canaveral in Brevard County on May 11, as per details from Cruise Mapper.

By Thursday, May 7, the CDC confirmed that 102 passengers, along with 13 crew members, had reported experiencing symptoms consistent with a norovirus infection, including diarrhea and vomiting. This outbreak has raised concerns about health and safety measures on board.

As of Thursday, May 7, there were 102 passengers and 13 crew members on the ship who reported being ill, the CDC said. Those affected by the norovirus outbreak have showed the typical symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting.

The virus, which is highly contagious, is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States, according to the CDC. Officials said it spreads quickly from sick people and through contaminated food, water or surfaces.

Most people develop symptoms within 12 to 48 hours of being exposed. Some other commonly reported symptoms include stomach pain, headaches and fevers.

The CDC said Princess Cruises has responded to the outbreak by increasing cleaning aboard the ship and isolating ill passengers and crew members.

The total number of sick passengers accounts for about 3.3% of the 3,116 passengers aboard the cruise ship.

28-Year-Old Woman Accused of Impersonating NYC High School Student

A 28-year-old woman is facing charges for allegedly posing as a high school student in New York City, in an incident reminiscent of the film Never Been Kissed.

Kacy Claassen has been charged with criminal impersonation and trespassing, as per the Bronx District Attorney’s complaint, which was obtained by Oxygen.

According to the New York Post, Claassen has entered a plea of not guilty.

The complaint states that Claassen allegedly enrolled at Westchester Square Academy on April 13, pretending to be a 16-year-old named Shamara Rashad, using a fake birthdate of March 8, 2010.

Her deception was uncovered on April 27 when principal Marques Rich stumbled upon a screenshot of her Facebook profile, revealing her true identity, real name, and actual birthdate of July 29, 1997, according to the complaint.

When Rich showed Claassen the screenshot, she allegedly responded with, “I’m not Shamara Rashad. I’m not 16 years old,” then disclosed her real name and birthday, according to the complaint.

“I lied about my identity because my friend forced me to,” Claassen allegedly told Rich, according to the complaint. “She was using me to receive more public assistance.”

Rich later told police that Claassen did not have permission or authority to enter or remain inside the school.

Police allegedly recovered a student ID card with Claassen’s photo and the name “Shamara Rashad” from her backpack, per the complaint.

An attorney for Claassen did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Oxygen.

Claassen is due back in court on June 15.

“Enrollment fraud is a serious crime that fundamentally undermines New York City Public School values,” according to a statement sent to Oxygen from the Department of Education. “The NYPD is actively investigating these allegations and will pursue all appropriate legal action against those responsible. We are providing all necessary and suitable support to the school community.”

Teen Charged in Tragic Triple Family Murder, Arrested in Tennessee with Accomplice

A 16-year-old girl from North Carolina and a 28-year-old man have been formally charged with murder following the shooting deaths of three of the teenager’s family members. Authorities shared these details during a Friday news conference.

Star Grant, aged 16, and Devon O’Neil Loving, aged 28, face three counts each of first-degree murder and felony conspiracy to commit murder, as reported by the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.

Given the gravity of the alleged offenses, Grant is being prosecuted as an adult. In North Carolina, these Class A felony charges may result in life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

Authorities in North Carolina released an update after the arrest of the teenager and the older man, linking them to the triple homicide.

The tragic incident came to light around 7:15 p.m. on Thursday when deputies from Buncombe County arrived at a residence on Ashworth Drive in Fairview for a welfare check.

The check was requested by a relative after friends and family had not heard from the victims, officials said.

While deputies conducted two prior welfare checks earlier in the week, one on Monday and another on Wednesday, authorities said they did not have the necessary evidence of an emergency to legally force entry into the home until the third visit.

After entering the house, deputies found the bodies of Travis Eugene Grant, 41, Kimberly Michelle Grant, 42, and Sharon Harwood Grant, 66, all deceased from gunshot wounds.

Authorities confirmed Star Grant is the daughter of Travis and Kimberly Grant, and the granddaughter of Sharon Grant.

Investigators quickly realized the 16-year-old was missing, and through a coordinated effort with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Gatlinburg Police Department, authorities tracked Grant and Loving across state lines.

The pair, whose relationship has not yet been disclosed, were arrested at a hotel in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, shortly before 6 a.m. Friday.

Grant and Loving, both Buncombe County residents, are currently being held in Tennessee.

They are expected to face an extradition hearing on Monday before being transferred back to North Carolina to face charges.

No motive has been released, as of Friday afternoon.

Authorities maintain there is no ongoing threat to the public.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

MEMORISE: So the people rested on the seventh day. – Exodus 16:30 (KJV)

READ: Genesis 2:1-3 (KJV)

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: 2 Chronicles 5-7

Open Heaven 9 May 2026 MESSAGE

When I became the General Overseer of RCCG, I was so concerned about the church’s growth that I was always fasting, praying, and preaching to the extent that I gave myself no rest or holidays. I did that for years, until suddenly, I discovered that while preaching, I would lose my voice completely after about 15 minutes. Even though I followed all kinds of recommendations to combat the issue, one of which was drinking tea with honey, it persisted. One day, an elderly woman who had noticed what was going on approached me and said, “Sir, you are suffering from Teacher’s disease.” I told her that I had never heard of that, and she replied, “You keep teaching, and you aren’t resting your voice. Now, it is in rebellion.” I asked her how to cure it, and she responded, “Rest your voice for 15 days.” “How will I do that?” I asked, and she said, “You can still teach without losing your voice for 15 minutes; when you can’t last 5 minutes, you will do what I’ve said.” Therefore, for the first time after becoming General Overseer, I went on holiday. I travelled to Germany and stayed in a house that had a sauna. My host told me that it warms the body from the inside out, and when I enter, I must exit after 15 minutes at most because I would have been sweating profusely. I went into the sauna, and 5 minutes later, there was no sweat. After 10 minutes, there was still no sweat. It wasn’t until after 15 minutes that I noticed a little sweat. I was in that sauna for 45 minutes before any real sweat came out. I had stressed my body so much that it wasn’t functioning as it should anymore. Since then, I discovered that if I am to last long in the assignment that God has given to me, I must rest every now and then.

Beloved, if you want to last long, you must always take time to rest. Today’s Bible reading tells us that God rested after He finished the work of creation, and that is a pattern that every Christian must emulate. It is very dangerous to keep working hard and not take time to rest because exhaustion can kill. Don’t sabotage yourself when it comes to fulfilling your God-given purpose on the earth. Take regular scheduled rests, and you will keep yourself in optimal physical condition, so you will be able to keep running your race.

Open Heaven 9 May 2026 KEY POINT

Knowing when to rest and relax your body is key to longevity.

Open Heaven 9 May 2026 HYMN 28 – Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah!

1 Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah!
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
Hold me with Thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven! Bread of heaven!
Feed me now and evermore (2ce)

2 Open Thou the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow:
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer! strong deliverer!
Be Thou still my strength and shield (2ce)

3 If I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside:
Bear me through the swelling torrent,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises! songs of praises!
I will ever give to Thee (2ce)

4 Saviour, come! We long to see Thee,
Long to dwell with Thee above;
And to know in full communion,
All the sweetness of Thy love.
Come, Lord Jesus! Come, Lord Jesus!
Take Thy waiting people home (2ce)

Top 5 Must-Watch Movies for Fans of Obsession: A Thrilling Cinematic Journey

It’s always invigorating to witness new talent in the film industry making a bold entrance. This is exactly what audiences can expect with the debut of writer-director Curry Barker in his upcoming film “Obsession.” Barker, who honed his craft on YouTube with comedy sketches, short films, and a standout found footage horror piece, is set to deliver one of the most memorable horror films of 2026.

“Obsession” centers on Bear, a music store employee portrayed by Michael Johnston, who is too shy to ask out his co-worker and childhood friend, Nikki, played by Inde Navarrette. In a moment of desperation, Bear uses a seemingly harmless novelty item, One Wish Willow, to cast a love spell. The spell takes an unexpected turn, causing Nikki to exhibit an overwhelming and erratic affection toward Bear, transforming his dream into a nightmare for both of them.

Among the numerous adaptations of the “Monkey’s Paw” trope, “Obsession” stands out as a remarkable interpretation. Barker masterfully explores the age-old warning “be careful what you wish for,” whether intentional or not. This theme is powerfully brought to life through Inde Navarrette’s stunning performance, capturing the horror of having one’s autonomy seized by a possessive force. Her portrayal has inspired a curated list of five horror films that delve into the terror of losing one’s identity or being trapped by an obsessive presence. Whether you’ve already seen “Obsession” or plan to experience one of this summer’s most anticipated films, these movies promise to deliver a chilling experience.

Renowned horror writer Stephen King once stated that “Pet Sematary” was the most terrifying book he had penned. Given his repertoire of ghostly tales, killers, and interdimensional creatures, it’s telling that the narrative of losing a child unsettled him most. Of the two adaptations of his 1983 novel, Mary Lambert’s 1989 film captures the essence of the story’s horror, with King himself crafting the screenplay.

The story unfolds with Dr. Louis Creed, played by Dale Midkiff, who moves his family to the rural town of Ludlow, Maine, after accepting a college position. Tragedy strikes when their cat, Church, is hit by a truck. Their neighbor, Jud Crandall, portrayed by Fred Gwynne, introduces Louis to a hidden pet cemetery in the woods, where Church is resurrected, albeit changed. When the Creeds’ youngest son, Gage, meets a similar fate, Louis makes the fateful decision to bury him in the cursed ground, only to witness something far more sinister return.

Pet Sematary (1989)

Horror maestro Stephen King once claimed that “Pet Sematary” was the scariest book he had ever written. Considering he’s dabbled with ghosts, killers, and interdimensional monsters, it speaks volumes that the story of losing a child would shake him above all else. Of the two films made from his 1983 novel, it’s Mary Lambert’s 1989 adaptation that gets to the heart of the story’s terror, especially with King writing the screenplay.

The trouble starts after doctor Louis Creed (Dale Midkiff) transplants his family to the rural community of Ludlow, Maine, where he takes a position at a local college. It’s not too long before Church, the family cat, is run over by a truck. Neighbor Jud Crandall (Fred Gwynne) shows Louis a secret pet cemetery hidden deep within the woods, which mysteriously revives a very different Church. When Gage (Miko Hughes), the youngest member of the Creed family, suffers the same horrible fate, Louis buries his son in the cursed spot, only to receive something else in return.

While neither adaptation has come close to the primal terror of the book, Lambert’s film gets the most right in depicting the kind of grief that compels people to perform acts of desperation. Louis knows he really shouldn’t be attempting another resurrection given prior results, yet is so distraught by his inability to be a present father that it leads to an even greater horror, which tears the Creeds (and Jud, for that matter) to pieces. Hughes doesn’t get a whole lot to do, but makes his scenes post-resurrection count with an unsettling blend of killer instincts and childlike innocence.

Misery

As great as Stephen King’s 1987 novel “Misery” was at depicting a terrifying interaction with an unstable fan through a pre-internet lens, it was Rob Reiner’s 1990 feature adaptation that propelled the story to even greater heights. All these decades later, “Misery” remains a disturbingly prescient psychological horror film about fan entitlement, on which we’ve made no progress whatsoever.

In the midst of completing his final book in the Misery Chastain series, author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) crashes his car during a terrible blizzard sweeping through the Colorado mountains. When he comes to, the heavily injured Paul finds himself in the care of a woman named Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who just so happens to love his work. But what starts as the act of a good samaritan turns into something much more malevolent, when Paul’s supposed caretaker not only has no plans of letting him leave, but forces him to write a whole new novel to satisfy her fan delusions.

“Misery” is still a masterful two-hander between Bates (in her Oscar-winning role) and Caan, as they keep finding ways to trip up the other without arousing too much suspicion. Annie is scary because you never quite know how she’s going to react when things don’t go her way, while the story being set in the dead of winter plays into the isolation that Paul experiences. “Misery” is all about tension and the power of suggestion. When something extreme does happen, like the hobbling scene (which horror fans weirdly can’t stop rewatching), it hits that much harder.

Return of the Living Dead 3

Filmmaker Brian Yuzna has this incredible ability to leap into a horror franchise and make his entries feel distinctly unique, as with 1990’s “Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation.” Just three years after that film, Yuzna stepped in to direct the third entry in the “Return of the Living Dead” series, which takes things in a whole new direction.

Rather than chronicling another zombie outbreak, “Return of the Living Dead 3” instead focuses on a love story between rebellious teenagers Curt (J. Trevor Edmond) and Julie (Melinda Clarke). After they decide to run away from home, the couple gets into a deadly motorcycle accident that kills Julie. Having learned the ins and outs of the top secret biohazard facility where his father works, Curt introduces the dreaded 2-4-5 Trioxin gas into his girlfriend’s system, leading to a whole new kind of reanimation. You won’t find sticking glass shards in your face in “Romeo and Juliet,” that’s for sure.

What makes “Return of the Living Dead 3” truly stand out is that it deviates from the horror-comedy blend of the previous films in favor of a more emotionally resonant story about coming back from the dead, albeit still with a whole lot of goop and gore. Julie resorts to various forms of body mutilation in order to temporarily subside the pain of being neither alive nor dead. Clarke does great work playing a character who’s always aware that she doesn’t feel at home in her body, and what it compels her to do to satiate her dormant hunger for brains. This is a prime example of what a filmmaker can bring to the table when a series isn’t bound by things like canon or a repeating formula.

Evil Dead (2013)

Horror is easily the genre most susceptible to remakes, but the thought of reanimating 1981’s “The Evil Dead” seemed like a fool’s errand in 2013, considering it’s imbued with so many of Sam Raimi’s trademark sensibilities. Thankfully, Fede Álvarez retains the “friends go to the cabin in the woods plot,” along with a few cheeky references, and instead opts to tell a much different story.

The dilapidated destination here isn’t chosen for its coziness, but rather its isolation to help Mia (Jane Levy) kick her heroin addiction. While the trip hits its inevitable rough patches, things really ramp up with the group discovering a cursed book in the basement, which Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) stupidly reads aloud from. Upon doing so, Mia finds herself possessed by a malevolent demon that inhabits her body and torments her friends in increasingly grotesque ways.

Álvarez’s “Evil Dead” is a gnarly gorefest that relishes in making you squirm, and that’s part of what makes it so great. It features some of the most disturbing moments in the entire franchise, such as Mia’s possession in the woods, in addition to that thing she does with her tongue and the boxcutter. But Mia really is the heart and soul of this genuinely mean film, which puts her through the wringer. All of the harm that comes her way in Deadite form makes her rise that much more satisfying. Her brother David (Shiloh Fernandez) is primed to become the spiritual successor to Bruce Campbell’s Ashley J. Williams, only for Mia to swoop right in and rightfully secure that mantle for herself. The heavy metal blood storm finale needs to be seen to be believed — it’s a very groovy note to go out on.

Get Out

It’s safe to say that Jordan Peele made one of the splashiest directorial debuts of the 2010s with “Get Out.” You cannot undersell how much of a ripple effect it’s had on the horror genre in such a short amount of time, especially when it came to the treatment of Black characters.

The 2017 psychological chiller opens as a contemporary twist on “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” with Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) being invited to upstate New York to visit the parents of his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams). On the surface, the extremely wealthy Armitages (Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener) seem like a well-meaning, albeit painfully oblivious privileged family who can’t help but unleash their uncomfortable microaggressions on their daughter’s boyfriend. But the nightmare expands when Chris uncovers an even more sinister operation hiding in plain sight within their community, a sci-fi body replacement plot right out of “The Stepford Wives.”

Peele’s Oscar-winning screenplay is both a masterful slow burn and a scathing, yet hilarious piece of social commentary about Black people only being accepted into white spaces if they literally think like them, which means playing a horrifying game of brain switcheroo. Characters like Georgina (Betty Gabriel), Andre (LaKeith Stanfield) and Walter (Marcus Henderson) are shells of their former inhabitants, all of whom are drowning in their own internal void — aka “the sunken place.” The alternate endings to “Get Out” provide a more realistic conclusion to this story, but Peele wisely decides to give the audience a much needed reprieve after everything that Chris has been through courtesy of Rod (Lil Rey Howery), the best TSA agent ever.

Pentagon Unveils UFO Photographs: Explore the Newly Released Images

0

In an intriguing development, the Pentagon has unveiled a series of images and videos depicting unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs). These materials were made available on the agency’s official website, marking a significant step in government transparency regarding such mysterious occurrences.

This release follows a directive from former President Donald Trump, who, in February 2026, called for the declassification of documents related to UAPs, unidentified flying objects, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Although the Pentagon had been gradually working towards making these files public, Trump’s announcement reignited public interest with promises of a comprehensive disclosure.

The Trump administration has encouraged the public to form their own opinions based on the newly released data. The files encompass a wide range of materials, including historical State Department communications, FBI documents, and transcripts from NASA’s manned space missions.

However, experts advise a prudent approach to interpreting these files. They caution that UAP videos can be easily misunderstood, particularly by those lacking expertise in military technology. A 2024 report from the Pentagon refuted assertions that the U.S. government possesses alien technology or any definitive proof of extraterrestrial existence.

San Diego Mayor Suggests Scrapping Annual Christmas Celebration

0

San Diego’s cherished December Nights festival might be axed, as Mayor Todd Gloria proposes budget cuts to address fiscal challenges.

Facing a daunting $146 million shortfall, Gloria suggests skipping the seasonal carols this year.

The proposed cancellation has sparked outrage among residents. Annually, Balboa Park draws hundreds of thousands for this festive event.

For Southern Californians, it’s as much a part of the holiday season as those cool evening walks on the beach. Now, the citizens of “America’s Finest City” may need to brace for a Christmas without their traditional celebration.

However, this financial predicament didn’t emerge unexpectedly.

As local outlets have noted over the past several weeks, San Diego spent like crazy on middle management positions in city government over the last decade.

In 2015, there were 70. Now, there are 400, according to Fox 5 San Diego.

Many of those in mid-level city management earn well over $200,000 a year, more than the members of the City Council who created their jobs.

It’s the same budget problem popping up everywhere that Democrats govern.

They added staff, perhaps so they could hand out patronage jobs. Then the Biden administration gave them loads of “emergency” cash to fight the coronavirus, even though the first Trump administration had already spent trillions keeping local governments and small businesses afloat.

Then the Democrats in charge made the convenient assumption that the new “emergency” levels of spending would be the new baseline. The good times would last forever.

Unfortunately, they didn’t. The State of California and many cities within it started feeling the pinch even before Biden left office.

With the Trump administration cutting wasteful federal spending, these governments are now feeling the pinch.

Now some voters in San Diego are talking about recalling Gloria. It’s worth reminding them that Gloria was the Great Democrat Hope when he was elected in 2020.

He was a bunch of “firsts”: First person of color to be mayor of the city; first gay mayor; and so on.

He replaced Republican Kevin Faulconer, a moderate Republican who clashed with Trump but who managed the city well.

Faulconer, in turn, had replaced Bob Filner, who had brought Democrats the prize of victory in the city, only to leave office in disgrace over sexual misconduct allegation.

San Diego chose Democrats. Those Democrats then chose wasteful spending — on expensive, pencil-pushing bureaucrats.

Now the Democrats want to cancel Christmas.

Let’s do the math. Have we learned our lesson yet?

Breaking News: Russia and Ukraine Broker Three-Day Ceasefire and Prisoner Exchange Amidst Global Tensions; Trump’s Reaction Inside

0

In brief

  • US President Donald Trump has announced Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire.
  • He said the truce could lead to a permanent peace between the two countries.

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire lasting three days, in response to his request. Trump expressed hope that this pause could mark the “beginning of the end” of the prolonged conflict between the two nations.

Confirmation of this agreement came from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Yuri Ushakov, an adviser on foreign affairs to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I requested it, and both President Putin and President Zelenskyy agreed without hesitation,” Trump stated as he prepared to leave the White House on Friday.

“We now have a brief window where lives won’t be lost, and that’s a very positive development,” Trump remarked.

The President had earlier revealed on social media that the ceasefire would take place from Saturday through Monday. Notably, Saturday coincides with Victory Day in Russia, a holiday that commemorates the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.

“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE (May 9th, 10th, and 11th) in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote.

“The Celebration in Russia is for Victory Day but, likewise, in Ukraine, because they were also a big part and factor of World War II.”

The US president said the ceasefire includes a suspension of all kinetic activity and the exchange of 1,000 prisoners by each country.

Russia had announced a ceasefire for Friday and Saturday, but it quickly unravelled, with both sides blaming the other for the continued fighting, just as they had when Ukraine’s own unilateral ceasefire had swiftly collapsed earlier in the week.

Trump said he made his request for the ceasefire “directly” to the two presidents.

“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought war,” he said.

Trump added that talks continue over ending the war that began in February 2022 “and we are getting closer and closer every day”.

Trump has gone back and forth over whether the war will end, at times expressing optimism and at other times saying Russia and Ukraine should be left to fight it out to the bitter end.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s decision on how to engage with those discussions was shaped in part by the prospect of freeing its prisoners. Ukraine has made the return of prisoners of war a central demand throughout the conflict.

“Red Square matters less to us than the lives of Ukrainian prisoners of war who can be brought home,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram.

Red Square is where Russia holds its traditional military parade to celebrate Victory Day, one of the biggest holidays of the year.

After releasing his statement, Zelenskyy issued a formal presidential decree “authorising” Russia to hold the parade, declaring Red Square off-limits for Ukrainian strikes for the duration of the event.

The framing of the decree appeared designed to underscore Ukraine’s claim that it holds effective targeting reach over the Russian capital, while publicly tying Ukrainian restraint to the ceasefire terms.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later shrugged off Zelenskyy’s decree as a “silly joke”.

“We don’t need anyone’s permission to be proud of our Victory Day,” Peskov told reporters.

Trump’s announcement came hours after US secretary of state Marco Rubio struck a much more sombre tone about negotiations to halt Russia’s four-year-old war in Ukraine, saying US mediation efforts have not led to a “fruitful outcome” so far.

Exodus in Los Angeles: An Inside Look at Hollywood’s Population Decline

0

It was a statement I never imagined I’d make: “I think I’m going to vote for Spencer Pratt for Mayor of LA.”

Gathered at a dinner party in the Hollywood Hills just last week, I anticipated being met with laughter and skepticism from my predominantly liberal circle of friends. After all, Pratt is mostly recognized as the outspoken antagonist from the reality TV show “The Hills.” Despite this, I felt compelled to support him for a position as significant as the mayor of Los Angeles, a city I’ve cherished for three decades.

To my surprise, instead of dismissive reactions, I found unexpected agreement. Among the attendees was a high-ranking executive from one of Hollywood’s major studios, who echoed my sentiment: “Oh yes, I might do too,” the executive remarked, “After all, what do we have to lose?”

Unfortunately, the answer seems to be very little.

Los Angeles, once the pulsating center of the entertainment world, famed for spreading dreams globally, is in a state of decline. The vibrant city that once symbolized endless possibilities is now facing challenges that threaten its very essence.

Trash-filled streets, filthy tent cities filled with homeless drug addicts, exorbitant taxes, $8-a-gallon gas and an exodus of jobs mean that the LA of today is a shadow of the city it once was.

Data released by the Census Bureau this week shows LA County lost 54,000 people between July 2024 and July 2025, the largest decline of any city in America.

More than 30,000 Angelenos were displaced by the wildfires, which tore through Pacific Palisades and Altadena at the start of last year, with around 17 percent of those leaving LA for good.

The City of Angels, once the beating heart of an entertainment industry known for exporting dreams around the world, is slowly dying

The City of Los Angeles recorded the largest loss, with 0.9 percent of its residents fleeing.

I’ve had dozens of friends quit. Some went back to the UK where the film industry is booming thanks to generous tax breaks. Film and television studio shoots are now happening in states where costs are cheaper, like New Jersey, Louisiana and New Mexico.

Other friends went to Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Nevada and Arizona, all states which offer cheaper housing, lower taxes and a better standard of living.

One friend who relocated to Arizona told me: ‘I should have done this years ago. The schools here are much better than the public schools in LA, we spend half as much in rent and groceries and people are friendlier. Plus, I don’t have to watch homeless people defecate in the street.’

LA has been under Democratic control for three decades, the entire time I have been here.

I’ve watched as the city I love, with its boundless optimism matched only by its swaying palm trees and endless sunshine, turned dark.

Earlier this week, a girlfriend called me in tears as an LAPD car chase ended up outside her home with a gunman holding an Uber driver hostage. Thankfully, that situation ended peacefully.

But I’ve had other friends fall prey to violence. One had his Rolex stolen at gunpoint as he left dinner one night.

Another friend saw a drone hovering over her home and assumed it was someone filming a movie. Later that night, her house was broken into by a South American crime gang.

And that is where The Hills star Pratt comes in.

After losing his Pacific Palisades home in the wildfires, Pratt, who is married to reality star Heidi Montag and the father of two young boys, went on the warpath.

He filed a lawsuit against the City of LA for negligence in allowing the fires, which killed 12 and destroyed 7,000 homes.

Then he went on a social media rampage which started to resonate with the thousands of us who are sick and tired of Mayor Karen Bass and her ineffectual leadership.

Bass wasn’t even in LA when the wildfires broke out, despite multiple warnings from meteorologists who said conditions were ripe for a devastating fire.

Where was she? In Ghana on a ‘jolly’ to celebrate the inauguration of that country’s new leader.

As Pratt said: ‘She didn’t even come home straight away. She stayed to go shopping.’

To make matters worse, a vital reservoir near the Palisades – home to Steven Spielberg, Sir Anthony Hopkins and a host of other stars – had been allowed to run dry, meaning firefighters quickly ran out of water and had to watch helplessly as multimillion dollar homes burned to the ground.

Spielberg has since left LA (for New York), reportedly worried about a new 5 percent ‘billionaire’s tax’ which Democrats are in favor of.

Other celebrities, including Angelina Jolie, George Clooney, Jonah Hill and Mark Wahlberg, have already gone.

The threat of that tax has seen tech titans like Sergei Brin (Google), Travis Kalanick (Uber) and Elon Musk (Tesla) leave California, too.

When Pratt first announced he was running for mayor, everyone here considered him a bit of a joke.

To most of us he was the peroxide-blonde ‘villain’ in The Hills, best known for his love of crystals and having the paparazzi on speed dial.

But in recent weeks, no one is laughing, least of all Mayor Bass, who he calls ‘Mayor Basura,’ the Spanish word for ‘trash.’

‘Business as usual is a death sentence for Los Angeles,’ Pratt told a recent rally. ‘This isn’t a campaign. It’s a mission to expose the system.’

Pratt has outwitted and out-earned Bass and Nithya Raman, a progressive ultra-left politician dubbed the ‘Mamdani of the Left coast’ after New York’s mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Pratt’s campaign has gone viral thanks to a series of brilliant ads which some critics, including a friend of mine who worked for Barack Obama, have called the best political ads of all time.

In one, Pratt stands in front of Mayor Bass’s $15 million residence and then moves on to the $3 million home of Raman, saying: ‘They are not like us.’

The camera shifts to the airstream trailer on the burnt-out lot of his house which the Pratt family calls home.

Other viral ads included a cartoon lampooning ‘Mayor Basura’ and another in which Pratt is dressed as Superman.

In a town sick of years of Democratic failures, it feels like the tide is, finally, beginning to turn.

Doug Ellin, the man who created the quintessential LA show Entourage has publicly backed Pratt, stating on X: ‘I’m taking a chance on @spencerpratt, someone who’ll actually demand transparency, accountability and results.’

Last week, I met a woman who has known Pratt since he was a kid.

She opened my eyes: ‘His dad is a dentist. He studied political science at college. He’s no dummy. That whole thing with The Hills was about becoming famous. He played a character. I know Spencer, he’s the real deal. I don’t think he ever planned to run for mayor, but he’s passionate about saving LA, as we all are. This should be the jewel in the crown of America and instead, it’s turned into a cesspit.

‘Spencer is resonating with a lot of people. He speaks directly to kids on social media. But he also speaks to a lot of us who are older and who are sick and tired of LA being driven into the ground. Democrats have had billions of dollars to fix homelessness. I’m a Democrat, but that money has been wasted. It’s time to give someone else a chance. If Karen Bass gets in again, I’m leaving. It would be a disaster.’

As for me, I’m lucky enough to live in the hills above the Chateau Marmont, one of the most privileged places in LA.

I bought my bungalow in 1999 when ‘normal’ people could still afford to buy here.

These days, it is impossible to get on the property ladder.

Rent is an eye-watering $2,800 for a one-bedroom apartment.

A house on my street is renting to an influencer for $25,000 a month.

It is virtually impossible for anyone in their 20s – like I was – to buy a house in LA these days, unless they have family support or a trust fund.

But I no longer feel safe.

Everyone around me has turned their home into a fortress with cameras.

Many have bought guns.

One lady I know invested $100,000 in a German-trained guard dog, telling me: ‘I don’t want a gun, but I don’t feel safe.’

During the 2024 election, I had many friends who secretly voted for Donald Trump.

This time around, it again feels like a seismic shift is happening.

On a local level, Pratt is gaining momentum, but on a state level, Republican Steve Hilton has consistently been leading in the California governor’s polls.

California’s primary election is on June 2.

At the moment, Pratt is trailing in the polls to Bass and Raman but is gaining ground fast with 40 percent of LA voters remaining ‘undecided.’

Our vote-by-mail papers arrived this week.

Whether LA is ready for a change remains to be seen.

But it sure feels like it.
