DCLM Daily Manna 6 May 2026 — Dealing With Frustrations

DCLM Daily Manna 6 May 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Dealing With Frustrations

TOPIC: Dealing With Frustrations (DCLM Daily Manna 6 May 2026)

KEY VERSE: And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net – Luke 5:5 (KJV)

TEXT: Luke 5:1-11 (KJV)

1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret,

2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.

6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.

9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.

11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Frustrations are an unavoidable aspect of life, and individuals respond to them in various ways. John Hightower, a former commanding general of John Hay Air Station in the Philippines, sought a unique approach to managing frustration by establishing the Cemetery of Negativism in 1981. This symbolic site serves as a place to metaphorically bury negative emotions and thoughts rather than the deceased. One gravestone features the phrase “It’s not possible,” intended to promote positive thinking. A reminder at the entrance states that “Negativism is man’s greatest self-imposed infliction,” underscoring the burdens imposed by negative attitudes. The cemetery encourages visitors to contemplate their perspectives and depart in a more positive state.

After a fruitless night of fishing at the Lake of Gennesaret, Simon Peter and his partners faced frustration. Jesus, teaching the crowds, utilised Peter’s empty boat to continue His message. Following the teaching, Jesus instructed Peter to venture into deeper waters – a request that seemed unreasonable given the circumstances. Despite his reservations, Peter complied, resulting in an overwhelming catch of fish that necessitated the help of his colleagues. This miraculous event led Peter, Andrew, James, and John to accept Jesus’ call to follow Him.

Our frustrations may arise from similar or other causes. We may be experiencing a drought in business. There could be problems with life or the family, and we need a strong hand to stand by us. It could be a relationship that failed to yield its objectives. Or a job interview that resulted in a regret letter, instead of an employment letter. Whatever it is that life serves us, we must avoid the urge to become bitter and frustrated, leaving the room open for Satan to come in with his evil suggestions.

Life-changing moments occur when we demonstrate sincere love for Christ through unwavering trust, even in the absence of immediate rewards. Jesus can achieve in moments what might take us an entire night of struggle. It is essential not only to trust Him during difficult times but also to exercise patience as we await transformation. The resolution to our frustrations may not come swiftly; however, if one has a persistent issue causing distress, it is assured that through absolute trust and patience, a miraculous resolution will manifest. We must set aside our fears, worries, and anxieties as we await the fulfilment of God’s promises.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Keep frustrations out by keeping the pace of God.

Rhapsody Of Realities 6 May 2026: The Power Is Within You

Rhapsody Of Realities 6 May 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): The Power Is Within You

TOPIC: The Power Is Within You (Rhapsody of Realities 6 May 2026)

But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you (Romans 8:11).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

What a profound Scripture we just read! So, the question is, “Who lives in you?” Is it the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead? If yes, then your physical body is no longer death-doomed or death-prone; rather, it’s been invigorated and made alive by the Holy Spirit. The power that made this happen isn’t residing in heaven but within you.

When you read Ephesians 1:19, it talks about the exceeding greatness of this mighty power. Then Ephesians 3:20 lets us know also that this power works within you: “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”

Many people describe experiences where they felt the power of God come upon them like a jacket. The feeling can make it seem like something landed from outside. But if something were truly coming from above and you didn’t see it, you wouldn’t know it came from above until you felt it. And the only reason you assumed it came from above was because you couldn’t explain it physically, yet you felt something on you.

But the reality is deeper than the feeling. The power of God is within you and works from within you, not from outside. Everything in the New Testament reveals that we’re different from those in the Old Testament. We don’t receive power from outside us as they did. We’re filled with the Spirit.

That’s why the New Testament reality is not to cry for power to come down but to live with the consciousness that the Spirit lives within you in all His power, glory and might. When you understand this, it transforms your confidence; your prayer life changes because you realise that you’re the carrier of divine power. Live from this standpoint, and you’ll manifest the supernatural consistently and effortlessly.

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the Holy Spirit who lives in me. I walk in the consciousness of His divine power that’s effectual in my spirit, soul and body. Being full of His might, I manifest the glory and perfections of Christ as I preach the Gospel with boldness and confidence, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Acts 1:8 (AMPC) But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.

1 Corinthians 3:16 (KJV) Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

Colossians 1:27 (KJV) To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Giancarlo Stanton’s Return Delayed: What Yankees Fans Need to Know

0

Tuesday marked the first opportunity for Giancarlo Stanton to return from the 10-day injured list. However, it appears the veteran designated hitter is still not poised for an immediate comeback.

Stanton, who is contending with a “low-grade” strain in his right calf, has yet to commence any running activities, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. The 36-year-old is still grappling with the ongoing discomfort of the injury.

“He’s doing OK and has managed to take some swings,” Boone reported on Tuesday prior to the Yankees’ 7-4 victory over the Rangers.

“The issue is lingering a bit. It still feels minor, but we’re not ready to push it just yet,” Boone added.

“[It’s lingering] a little bit. It still feels minor, but not ready to push it yet.”

When Stanton landed on the IL — four days after suffering the injury jogging between first and second base in an April 24 game against the Astros, with the club waiting to see if he might be able to avoid a stint — the Yankees were hoping it would be a shorter stay.

But Stanton has had a history of soft-tissue injuries in his legs, so they said they were not going to push anything to have it turn into something more significant.

In the meantime, Jasson Domínguez has mostly filled the DH role — after avoiding a serious elbow injury when he was hit by a pitch last Wednesday — entering Tuesday batting .273 with an .833 OPS in six games.

He went 0-for-4 in Wednesday’s win.

Ben Rice was out of the lineup for a second straight day Tuesday, still dealing with soreness from a left hand contusion he suffered Sunday.

The slugging first baseman was hoping to pick up a bat at some point Tuesday to see how much improvement he had made, but was mostly relegated to getting treatment.

“Better today,” Rice said before trying to swing.

Paul Goldschmidt started again at first base in Rice’s place and went 2-for-4 with a home run.

Carlos Rodón made his third and likely final rehab start Tuesday night with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre — throwing 85 pitches across 6 ¹/₃ innings in which he gave up six runs (five earned) — as long as everything goes well in the coming days.

The plan is for the left-hander to make his next start with the Yankees, Boone said Tuesday, assuming he comes out of the start healthy as he finishes off his comeback from October surgery to remove loose bodies and shave down a bone spur in his left elbow.

“I’m up to do whatever they want me to do,” Rodón said at Polar Park. “I’ll be ready when they call my name. That would be great.”

Rodón said his stuff could have been crisper, but he got done what he wanted to get done in terms of increasing his workload.

Gerrit Cole also made a fourth rehab start Tuesday with High-A Hudson Valley — building up to 69 pitches while giving up five runs across 4 ¹/₃ innings — though there was nothing imminent in regards to his return as he goes through a longer comeback from Tommy John surgery.

“I don’t know for sure, but I still think he’s a little bit of ways away,” Boone said.

Orlando Bloom Spotted in NYC with Katy Perry Doppelgänger in Revealing Outfit

0

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, Orlando Bloom was seen making a discreet entrance into a highly exclusive Met Gala afterparty in New York City, accompanied by a woman who bore an uncanny resemblance to his former partner, Katy Perry.

The 49-year-old actor, who announced his split from Perry last year, attempted to keep a low profile by wearing a black baseball cap as he slipped into the trendy venue, Zero Bond, around 1 am.

By his side was Meredith Duxbury, a 27-year-old model and influencer known for her impressive social media presence, boasting over 1.7 million followers on Instagram.

Duxbury, whose appearance drew notable comparisons to Bloom’s ex, was dressed in a revealing sheer black lace dress that left little to the imagination, showcasing her slim figure.

Photographs of the pair in close proximity have fueled speculation about a potential romance, with many wondering if there is more than just friendship between the two.

At 49, the Lord of the Rings alum is 22 years older than Duxbury, who recently split from Australian male model Douglas Joseph.

However, a source told TMZ that Bloom didn’t know Duxbury and actually attended the fash-bash with Swiss model Luisa Laemmel, 28, with whom he was spotted at Super Bowl LX on February 8.

Bloom and Perry announced their breakup after nine on/off years of dating.

The Deep Cover action star and Perry (born Katheryn Hudson) previously split for 10 months between March 2017 and January 2018, before he popped the question to her with a daisy-shaped, $5M Neil Lane engagement ring in 2019.

The pair share a daughter, Daisy, together.

In 2017, the 13-time Grammy nominee notoriously ranked Bloom second to John Mayer as her favorite sexual partners during a game of ‘Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts’ on CBS’ The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Perry is now dating former Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.

The pair have been together for the last eight months.

Exploring the Rumors: Is Jude Law Entangled in Multiple Affairs?

Jude Law is often recognized for two things: his distinctive hairline and his notorious struggles with commitment. The British actor’s exceptional talent, undeniable charm, and striking appearance have catapulted him into the spotlight throughout his career. However, being in the public eye has its challenges, especially if you’re prone to infidelity. During the early 2000s, a fervent tabloid culture exposed Law’s scandalous affair, leading to a public apology to his then-fiancée, Sienna Miller.

The scandal involved Law’s affair with Daisy Wright, the nanny caring for the children he shared with ex-wife Sadie Frost. Prior to this, Law had already been dodging rumors of an affair with his “Cold Mountain” co-star, Nicole Kidman. Kidman successfully sued the Daily Mail over these unfounded claims.

Jude Law and Sienna Miller began their whirlwind romance in 2004, getting engaged within a year. This followed closely on the heels of Law’s divorce from Frost, casting a shadow of suspicion over their relationship. Miller had to publicly deny speculation of an affair with Law. At the time, Law was at the pinnacle of his career, and Miller was gaining fame with a major role in the West End’s “As You Like It.” The couple faced intense public scrutiny, which intensified in 2005 when The Mirror reported that Law’s son had revealed his father’s affair with the nanny. Wright’s personal diary excerpts were published, making the scandal public. Law issued an apology through the British Press Association, stating, “I want to publicly apologize to Sienna and our respective families for the pain that I have caused. There is no defense for my actions which I sincerely regret” (via The Guardian).

Despite a public apology, the damage had been done. As reported by The New York Post, the news severely affected Sienna Miller, even impacting her ability to perform on stage. Reflecting on the ordeal in a 2020 interview with The Daily Beast, Miller described it as one of the most challenging experiences of her life, saying, “To face that kind of public heartbreak and still perform in front of 800 people every night, it’s just the last thing you want to do.” Although Law and Miller attempted to rekindle their relationship between 2009 and 2011, it ultimately did not last.

Despite the scandal, Jude Law managed to maintain a thriving acting career. The British actor later married psychologist Phillipa Coan in 2019, opting for a more private relationship, seemingly to steer clear of further tabloid drama. Interestingly, a 2026 report by The Sun revealed that Law had a brief fling with “Real Housewives of London” star Amanda Cronin, during a period when both were reportedly single.

Jude Law had a tryst with a Real Housewives star

A public apology can only go so far once the damage is done. According to The New York Post, Sienna Miller couldn’t perform after dealing with the news and had to take a moment before returning to the stage, better than ever. In a 2020 discussion with The Daily Beast about the situation, Miller said, “That was one of the most challenging moments I hope I’ll ever have to experience. Because with that level of public heartbreak, to have to get out of a bed let alone stand in front of 800 people every night, it’s just the last thing you want to do.” Jude Law and Miller broke up and attempted the relationship again between 2009 and 2011.

While Law took a metaphorical beating after being the villain in a very public scandal, he was able to maintain a successful acting career. The British heartthrob went on to marry Phillipa Coan, a psychologist, in 2019. It appears that Law has kept this relationship private and very low profile, perhaps to avoid any further tabloid drama surrounding his love life. However, in a 2026 report by The Sun, “Real Housewives of London” star Amanda Cronin revealed that she had a fling with Law during a time when the two were both purportedly single.

No exact dates were revealed, making it difficult to confirm Law’s relationship status at the time. There are no other confirmed cheating scandals associated with Law’s complicated love life besides his major slip up with Miller, but it should be noted that Law is the proud father of 7 children, divided amongst four women. If one thing’s certain, it’s that Law loves women, perhaps a bit too much.

5 Proven Exercises to Melt Away Muffin Tops Faster Than Traditional Ab Workouts for Those Over 55

Bid farewell to your muffin top with these effective daily exercises.

When it comes to breakfast or brunch, muffin tops are delightful. But when they appear around your waistline, they become less than desirable. Often termed “muffin top” or “love handles,” these excess fat deposits typically emerge in middle age due to hormonal changes, a decelerated metabolism, and diminished muscle mass. This shift causes fat to accumulate around the hips, creating unsightly bulges over your jeans. The optimal strategy to address this includes adhering to a nutritious diet, managing stress levels, and engaging in consistent physical activity.

Curious about the best way to target this stubborn area? We consulted an expert who reveals five exercises that will slim down your muffin top more effectively than traditional ab workouts after the age of 55.

“Reducing waistline fat is achievable through overall body energy expenditure, calorie burning, improved sleep, hormonal balance, and protein-rich meals. Ab exercises alone won’t make a significant impact,” says Dr. Milica McDowell, an esteemed Doctor of Physical Therapy and AVP of Education. With over two decades of experience in sports and orthopedics, Dr. McDowell is also a seasoned personal trainer, exercise physiologist, sports coach, gym owner, 13-time Ironman competitor, 50K finisher, and certified CrossFit level 1 coach.

“Trying to burn fat around your waistline can be achieved, but it’s through whole body energy, expenditure, burning calories, sleeping better, improving your hormone balance, and eating protein-rich meals. No amount of ab work is going to move the needle just by itself,” explains Dr. Milica McDowell, Doctor of Physical Therapy, AVP of Education, Author, Exercise Physiologist at US Physical Therapy with more than 20 years of experience in sports/orthopedics. Dr. McDowell is also a personal trainer, exercise physiologist, team and endurance sport coach, gym owner, 13-time Ironman finisher, 50K finisher, and CrossFit level 1 certified coach.

She adds, “In order to help reduce the appearance of a muffin top, first you need to burn fat and second you need to train your core. The core muscles are more than just the six-pack abs in the front of the body. There are actually four groups of muscles around this area that function as a stabilizing canister, keeping the area between your ribs and your pelvis stable.”

With age, this area usually becomes deconditioned through poor posture, daily wear and tear, and potential weight gain. Below, Dr. McDowell shares five exercises that can help you shed unwanted fat, improve your posture, and train the deep core.

Daily Walking in Zone Two

Lace up your shoes and head outdoors for a good old-fashioned walk. Not only is walking an excellent workout for your muscles, joints, and bones, but your mental health reaps the benefits, too.

“Daily walking in zone two is a great way to reduce overall body fat and improve your body composition. If you walk for 30 minutes a day, five days a week, this can change your hormones, improve your insulin sensitivity, reduce overall fat, and support hormone regulation,” Dr. McDowell explains.

In addition, getting your steps in within zone two serves as an excellent calorie burner, so Dr. McDowell encourages you to include brisk walking in your routine to shed your muffin top.

Glute Bridges

“Glute bridges are another exercise that help with posture as well as training your core canister,” Dr. McDowell tells us. “Because most adults over 55 tend to have an anterior pelvic tilt with an exaggerated lumbar curve, this can help you bring the abdomen back under your rib cage and can reduce the appearance of the muffin top. Glute bridges also activate all the posterior chain muscles, which can help you improve the balance between the glutes and the abs.”

  1. Lie flat on your back with bent knees and feet hip-width apart, arms at your sides with palms pressing into the mattress.
  2. Press through your heels to lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from head to heels.
  3. Squeeze your buttocks, holding at the top for 2 seconds.
  4. Lower your hips back to the start position.
  5. Perform 2 sets of 12 to 20 reps a day.

Dead Bugs

“The dead bug exercise is one that activates all four abdominal groups,” Dr. McDowell says.

  1. Lie flat on your back, arms extended toward the ceiling and knees lifted in a tabletop position.
  2. Press your back into the floor and engage your core.
  3. Lower one arm and the opposite leg.
  4. Return to the start position.
  5. Repeat on the other side and continue to alternate.
  6. Perform 2 sets of 8 to 20 reps per day.

Planks

“The farmers walk is a very efficient exercise that builds total muscle endurance and helps to burn calories,” explains Dr. McDowell. “This assists in elevating the heart rate, which also helps to burn fat.”

  1. Place your hands under your shoulders.
  2. Press into the pads of your fingers and hug your inner arm toward your armpit.
  3. Walk your feet out to hip-width.
  4. Engage your abs, squeeze your buttocks, and pull upward through your quads.
  5. Hold the plank position with proper form.
  6. From there, move into a side plank, shifting your weight onto one hand and reaching the other arm to the sky.
  7. If you’re a beginner, try holding for 10 to 20 seconds in both a front and side plank, completing as many reps as possible before your form begins to fatigue. If more advanced, hold for 30 to 60 seconds, performing the flow in a circuit for 5 to 10 minutes.

Farmer’s Walk

“The farmers walk is a very efficient exercise that builds total muscle endurance and helps to burn calories,” explains Dr. McDowell. “This assists in elevating the heart rate, which also helps to burn fat.”

  1. Hold a heavy dumbbell or kettlebell—50% of your body weight—in each hand at your sides.
  2. Start walking forward, keeping your torso still.
  3. Continue to walk for the prescribed distance or time.
  4. If you’re a beginner, carry 10 to 15 pounds on each side; if more advanced, you can carry up to 25% of your body weight.

Chilling Crime in Kentucky: Man Charged with Kidnapping and Murder in Grisly Trailer Case

0

A man from Kentucky is poised to face trial next year following accusations that he kidnapped and murdered a woman, concealed her body beneath his trailer, and later abandoned it by a roadside seven years ago, authorities report.

Ryan “Todd” Crawley is scheduled to appear in court from May 17 to 28 next year, in connection with the 2019 murder of April Arnett, as confirmed by the Scott County Circuit Court, according to WKYT.

Earlier this year, Crawley was indicted on charges of murder, kidnapping, and evidence tampering. He has entered a not guilty plea to the murder and kidnapping charges, although he previously admitted guilt to tampering with evidence and abusing a corpse.

The trial for Ryan “Todd” Crawley is slated for May 17-28 of the coming year. (Kentucky Department of Corrections)

While Crawley maintains his innocence regarding the murder and kidnapping allegations, his legal team contends that the seven-year delay in bringing these new charges to court casts doubt on the case. Court records suggest that Crawley played a role in Arnett’s abduction and subsequent murder.

His lawyers, who have sought to maintain their client’s innocence on the more serious charges, have highlighted that the murder and kidnapping charges were filed nearly seven years after the 2019 incident.

On Aug. 17, 2019, at about 9 p.m., Kentucky State Police were notified about a body later identified as Arnett that was found off KY Highway 2328, also known as Old Lexington Road, in Madison County.

Police say the discovery was made four days after Arnett’s alleged death in Scott County.

Crawley allegedly wrapped up Arnett’s body before storing it under his trailer, court documents say, according to WLEX.

Four other people, including the defendant’s cousin Ronald Crawley, were charged with helping kidnap Arnett.

Authorities said the two Crawleys drove into Madison County over the Old Clays Ferry Bridge with Arnett’s body wrapped in a tarp with cinder blocks attached. The pair attempted to toss her body into the water, but it became stuck on a guy wire, at which point the men put Arnett’s body back into the vehicle and dumped it off the side of the road, where she was ultimately found.

Ronald Crawley was arrested in Oregon in 2019 after allegedly fleeing to the state.

Arnett was a mother of three, according to her obituary, which said she “will forever be known for her big heart and infectious smile.”

Urgent Evacuation: Hantavirus Suspects Isolated from Ship Amid Intensified Contact Tracing

0

In brief

  • Two seriously ill crew members will be evacuated to the Netherlands.
  • Contact tracing efforts are underway in South Africa.

Two critically ill crew members from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak will be evacuated to the Netherlands from Cape Verde, enabling the ship to continue its journey to Spain’s Canary Islands, the cruise operator announced on Tuesday.

The MV Hondius has been at the heart of a global health alert since Saturday, following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) notification of a suspected hantavirus outbreak. This rare virus, typically transmitted through the urine, droppings, and saliva of infected rodents, is believed to have caused the deaths of three passengers on board.

With additional cases emerging, both passengers and crew have been placed in isolation after Cape Verdean authorities denied the ship permission to dock. Health officials have been urgently searching for a suitable port for the Hondius, which remains anchored near Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.

On Tuesday, Dutch operator Oceanwide Expeditions revealed plans to evacuate two ailing crew members to the Netherlands for essential medical treatment. Additionally, a third person, who had close contact with a German passenger who died on Saturday, will also be evacuated.

The WHO confirmed that arrangements for the medical evacuation are currently underway.

Once the evacuation has taken place, MV Hondius “can continue its route”, Ann Lindstrand, the WHO’s representative in Cape Verde, told AFP, adding that the ship looked set to sail either to the Canaries or to the Netherlands.

Oceanwide Expeditions meanwhile said its plan was for the ship to sail north “to the Canary Islands, either Gran Canaria or Tenerife, which will take three days of sailing”, adding that “discussions are ongoing with relevant authorities”.

‘Complicated’

The cruise, which set sail from Ushuaia in Argentina on 1 April destined for Cape Verde, counted 88 passengers and 59 crew members, with 23 nationalities onboard, the WHO said. There are four Australians on board.

One of the dead, a Dutch woman, had left the ship at the Atlantic island of Saint Helena and had flown to Johannesburg where she died on 26 April.

Health authorities have been racing to find a port for the ship to dock, with Spanish authorities insisting they wanted health data from the expedition vessel before opening up a Canary Islands port.

On Tuesday, Lindstrand said an ambulance would take three people from the port in Praia, to the nearby airport, from which they will be evacuated by plane.

While the situation was “changing by the hour”, Lindstrand said that once that “complicated expedition” had been carried out, “the boat will be able to leave sometime in the middle of the night”.

Human-to-human transmission?

So far, two hantavirus cases have been confirmed — including in one of the fatalities and a British passenger currently in intensive care in Johannesburg — with five further suspected cases, the WHO said.

Three of those seven have died; the one in Johannesburg was critically ill, and three still on board had reported milder symptoms, including one who is now asymptomatic, it said.

The WHO was trying to deduce how hantavirus had appeared on the ship, with the first person who died having developed symptoms on 6 April.

Human-to-human transmission has only been reported in previous outbreaks of one specific hantavirus called Andes virus, which circulates in South America.

WHO epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention director Maria Van Kerkhove told reporters the virus species had yet to be confirmed, but highlighted that WHO had been told “there are no rats on board” the ship.

South African researchers were sequencing the data, said Van Kerkhove, who added that “our working assumption is that it is the Andes virus”.

“We do believe that there may be some human-to-human transmission that is happening among the really close contacts”.

Contact-tracing

The first two fatalities were a Dutch couple — a man who died on April 11 and his wife who died after she disembarked in Saint Helena to accompany his body.

The wife was suffering from “gastrointestinal symptoms” and “deteriorated” during a flight to Johannesburg on 25 April, the WHO said. She died the following day.

Efforts are under way to trace people on that flight, which South African-based carrier Airlink said was carrying 82 passengers and six crew.

The South African authorities had asked the airline to notify the passengers that they must contact the health department, a representative, Karin Murray, told AFP.

Van Kerkhove said the typical incubation period for hantavirus was between one and six weeks, leading the WHO to believe that the Dutch couple, who had been travelling in South America, “were infected off the ship”.

The Hondius, she highlighted, was an expedition vessel, with passengers going ashore on Atlantic islands to do birdwatching and other activities — meaning there could be “some source of infection on the islands”.

The WHO has said the risk to the global population from the outbreak is “low”.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp Enacts Landmark Education Reforms with New Legislation

ATLANTA (WJBF) – In a significant move to enhance educational outcomes in Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp has enacted a comprehensive suite of education reforms, with a strong focus on boosting early literacy.

Unveiled on Tuesday at the Georgia State Capitol, this legislative package introduces several pivotal adjustments: prohibiting cell phone use for students from kindergarten through eighth grade, creating alternative graduation routes, revising the state’s math curriculum, and implementing the newly established Georgia Early Literacy Act.

The cornerstone of these reforms is the Georgia Early Literacy Act, designed to bolster reading proficiency among kindergarten to third-grade students.

As part of this law, public schools throughout Georgia will welcome literacy coaches, a strategic initiative that lawmakers believe could dramatically enhance early reading skills.

According to Jon Burns, the state intends to deploy around 1,300 literacy coaches, although not all the positions will be immediately occupied.

State leaders believe the investment will pay off long-term by strengthening foundational reading skills at an early age.

Georgia currently ranks among the bottom five states in early reading performance, a statistic that has raised concern among educators and lawmakers.

State School Superintendent officials estimate that adding literacy coaches could improve reading proficiency by as much as 15%.

Lawmakers say improving literacy at a young age is critical to setting students up for success later in life, from high school to college and into the workforce.

Supporters of the legislation point to success in other states that have adopted similar “science of reading” approaches.

States like Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have seen significant gains in reading scores after implementing structured literacy programs focused on phonics and comprehension.

Georgia leaders said they expect similar, if not faster, results.

The new law mandates a science-based approach to reading instruction, emphasizing phonics and foundational literacy skills.

It also allows schools to retain kindergarten students who do not meet reading proficiency benchmarks before advancing to first grade.

In addition, the legislation includes a state-funded initiative to provide books to families beginning at birth, aiming to encourage reading at home from an early age.

Governor Kemp has about one week remaining to sign any additional bills passed during this legislative session.

State leaders said the newly signed education measures represent a significant step toward improving academic outcomes and strengthening Georgia’s education system.
