Fuel Prices Surge Nationwide: Six States Report Gasoline Over $5 Per Gallon

0

On Monday, California emerged as the state with the highest gasoline prices in the nation, with the average cost per gallon for regular fuel reaching $6.11, according to data from AAA.

WASHINGTON — As tensions continue to escalate with the ongoing conflict in Iran, six states reported average gas prices exceeding $5 per gallon on Monday, contributing to an upward trend in the national average for regular gasoline.

Leading the pack, California’s average gas price hit $6.11 per gallon, as reported by AAA. In rural Mono County, the situation is even more dire, with prices surpassing $7 per gallon.

Following California, the states with notably high gas prices include Washington at $5.673, Hawaii at $5.639, Oregon at $5.255, and Nevada at $5.177, all maintaining averages above the $5 mark.

Over the weekend, Alaska joined the ranks of its Pacific neighbors, with the state’s average gas price climbing to $5.067 per gallon.

The national retail average for a regular gallon of gas was $4.457 on Monday. That’s a 1-cent increase from Sunday, according to the American Automobile Association, and 35 cents more than last Monday. At this time last year, a gallon of gas was $1.29 cheaper.

The surging prices seemed to stabilize or even decrease for about two weeks, following a temporary ceasefire agreement between the U.S. and Iran that has been indefinitely extended.

However, the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route where roughly a fifth of the world’s oil passes, has effectively remained closed or extremely limited to passage due to dueling blockades by both countries. This volatility has greatly disrupted the global oil markets.

The main uncertainty for the global economy is where oil prices are heading because of the Iran war. Oil prices spurted higher early this week on worries that the war will keep the Strait of Hormuz closed for a long time. That would, in turn, keep oil tankers pent up in the Persian Gulf instead of delivering crude to customers worldwide.

Hovering just under $5 is the Great Lakes region. According to gas price tracker GasBuddy, states like Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana have seen the fastest increase in fuel prices in the past few weeks.

Patrick De Haan, a petroleum analyst at GasBuddy, said “refinery outages” in the Midwest have made increases more severe. Although De Haan notes that these issues have improved, which could soon offset prices.

Georgia has the lowest average gas price among states at $3.859. In March, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp suspended the state’s 33-cent excise gas tax and a 37-cent diesel tax in response to rising prices amid the War in Iran. The 60-day tax suspension is scheduled to last until May 19.

After Georgia, Oklahoma ($3.885), and Arkansas and Mississippi (both $3.898) have the cheapest gas.

Highest average gas prices by state:

  • California: $6.114
  • Washington: $5.673
  • Hawaii: $5.639
  • Oregon: $5.255
  • Nevada: $5.177

Lowest average gas prices by state, as of Friday:

  • Georgia: $3.859
  • Oklahoma: $3.885
  • Arkansas & Mississippi: $3.898
  • Louisiana: $3.903
  • Texas $3.925

Albanese Secures Strategic Partnership with Japan: Boosting Defence, Mineral Resources, and Fuel Security

0

In Brief

  • Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae is in Australia, meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
  • Australia will strengthen its trade and security relationship with Japan under a new, ‘quasi alliance’.

Australia and Japan have formalized agreements aimed at enhancing their “quasi-alliance,” focusing on a wide range of issues, including economic security.

On Monday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced plans to strengthen collaboration in areas such as defense, security, critical minerals, cybersecurity, and trade.

During their joint statement, Albanese highlighted the mutual advantages these agreements would bring to both countries.

“For Australians, this means reduced vulnerability to global shocks, such as those we are currently experiencing due to conflicts in the Middle East,” Albanese stated.

“This will provide greater security for our farmers as they plan their crops and offer more predictability for commuters refueling their vehicles,” he added.

Takaichi said the closure of the Strait of Hormuz as a result of the Iran war was inflicting enormous impact on the Indo-Pacific.

“The two countries have built a relationship as frontrunners in co-operation among like-minded countries by advancing pioneering security co-operation at a level that could be described as quasi-allies,” she said.

The major agreement, a joint declaration on economic security co-operation, is set against expanding Chinese military might in the region.

The statement outlines a deal for both nations to consult the other on economic security measures as well as ways to reduce risk.

This will be in a bid to enable greater access to capital and technology, as well as create stronger commercial links for Australian producers.

Critical minerals were labelled a core pillar of the relationship to drive investment in projects that address supply chain vulnerabilities.

On defence and security, both nations agreed to increase information sharing, co-sustainment of defence capabilities and advanced weapons testing.

Australia chose Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries to supply its upgraded Mogami-class frigate for Australia’s navy in a $10 billion deal.

Takaichi said she was pleased the agreement had been finalised, and pledged Japan would steadfastly follow through on the contract.

The two governments also agreed to establish an Australia-Japan Leadership Dialogue that will include academia and business groups.

Earlier, Albanese welcomed the Japanese leader to Parliament House where she received a gun-salute.

School students waving Japanese and Australian flags greeted the pair, before they posed for a selfie in parliament’s marble foyer.

The visit marks 50 years since the signing of a treaty that established relations between the two nations.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong played down reports the talks could turn to a Japanese back-up for the $368 billion AUKUS submarine deal with the US and UK.

In a report for the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, former defence official Richard Gray said that risks in the AUKUS program could leave the country without a submarine.

He recommended Japan as an attractive partner to explore contingencies.

Senator Wong said Australia would continue to focus on AUKUS.

“We have a clear AUKUS plan, that is our focus,” she said.

The conservative Japanese leader, who considers former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher an inspiration, won a massive election victory in October giving her a mandate to push through key reforms.

During her trip, Takaichi laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Australian War Memorial and visited Governor-General Sam Mostyn.

Dianne Buswell and Joe Sugg Reveal Charming Nursery for Their Soon-to-Arrive Baby Boy

On Sunday, pregnant Strictly Come Dancing star Dianne Buswell and her partner, Joe Sugg, gave fans a heartwarming glimpse into their baby boy’s nursery through a charming video shared on Instagram.

Dianne, 36, and Joe, 34, who found love during their time as dance partners on the 2018 season of Strictly Come Dancing, are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their first child.

The couple appears well-prepared for their new addition, as Joe was seen painting the nursery walls a crisp white complemented by green paneling, and adorning them with whimsical duck-themed wallpaper.

In the video, Joe also takes on the task of assembling a wooden crib and adding various wooden furnishings to the room. These include a chest of drawers, a bookcase, and an adorable miniature stool, all contributing to the nursery’s warm and inviting atmosphere.

To finish off the cozy space, Joe and Dianne placed a comfortable armchair in the room, decorated the walls with children’s art and vintage wooden tennis rackets, and filled a basket with books and cuddly teddy bears, creating a perfect haven for their little one.

The couple looked pleased with the adorable duck themed bedroom for their newborn as they high-fived and Joe sweetly cradled Dianne’s baby bump.

‘My favourite thing is the bookshelf as it was made by my grandad and I know he would have been well chuffed to see that on the wall’.

It comes after Dianne showed off her bump in a bikini and posed for selfies with boyfriend Joe last week.

The mum-to-be looked incredible in a green bikini top and white floral bottoms as she showed off her bump ahead of going swimming.

Pulling her signature red tresses up in a high bun, Dianne beamed for the camera as she revealed she is, ‘swimming all I can at the moment’.

The dancer, who is just weeks away from her due date, added that swimming is, ‘the best my body feels whilst in the water’.

She also shared a series of loved-up selfies with YouTube star Joe as they continued their travels around the UK filming their brand new TV series.

‘We’re travelling round the country exploring some of the UK’s most traditional crafts.

‘We’re still currently filming so here are some little sneak peaks but we already cannot wait to share this with you all!’

Showcasing what fans can expect from the series, Joe and Dianne posed for a photo in front of a pottery wheel, recreating the scene from 1990 film Ghost.

Other images saw internet personality Joe getting stuck in making a metal casing for a traditional wooden wheel, while Dianne posed with an intricate design carved into stone before the couple headed to a carving lesson.

A final photo saw Dianne cradling her growing baby bump on the beach, looking down lovingly towards her stomach as the duo took a break from filming.

There is currently no announced release date for the new show, but it is expected to hit screens on Sky History.

The couple announced they were expecting their first child back in September and have been keeping fans up to date ever since.

Dianne was the first professional in Strictly’s history to compete while pregnant, before her partner Stefan Dennis, was forced to pull out due to injury in 2025.

Joe and Dianne struck up a romance when they were paired together during the sixteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2018.

Police Report: Suspect in Store Manager’s Killing Showed ‘No Remorse

Background: The We Buy Gold store location in Fort Pierce, Fla., where Lanessa Rodriguez was found dead (Google Maps). Inset (left): Landen Ballard (St. Lucie County Sheriff). Inset (right): Lanessa Rodriguez (Facebook).

A tragic incident unfolded in Florida when a young man reportedly engaged in casual conversation with a store manager before fatally shooting her. The suspect, 20-year-old Landen Ballard, is currently detained at the St. Lucie County Jail facing charges of first-degree murder and evidence tampering.

The chilling event occurred at a We Buy Gold store in Fort Pierce, where the victim, 35-year-old Lanessa Rodriguez, was the manager. According to an arrest warrant obtained by Law&Crime, Ballard, accompanied by two unidentified individuals, visited the store. After what seemed like a benign exchange, Ballard allegedly drew a firearm and shot Rodriguez multiple times, fleeing the scene with a female accomplice.

As they departed, the woman who drove Ballard reportedly informed authorities that he boasted about the act, callously questioning, “Is it bad that I have no remorse?” This lack of empathy has only intensified the gravity of the charges against him.

The police were alerted to the crime scene following a distress call at 7:12 p.m. on April 28. Concern arose when a colleague, unable to reach Rodriguez, decided to check on her at the Fort Pierce location. Upon arrival, the colleague discovered Rodriguez in a dire state, lying behind her desk in a pool of blood.

Law enforcement officials who arrived on the scene documented the presence of multiple bullet casings and bullet holes peppered across the store’s walls. Sadly, Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the site of the shooting, marking a somber end to an ordinary day turned tragic.

At 11 p.m. the same night, a woman who said she was one of the people who was with Ballard at the store made contact with police in Vero Beach, Florida. After she was brought to the Fort Pierce Police Department, she told investigators that Ballard contacted her that day because he wanted to sell a gold pendant. She said Ballard spoke to a woman whom she believed was Rodriguez on the phone, adding that Rodriguez had previously offered Ballard work.

According to the warrant, the woman who drove stayed in the car while Ballard and the other unnamed man went inside the store. She told police that when Ballard and the other man came out and got back in the car, Ballard said he shot Rodriguez twice then “finished his clip.” During their ride, Ballard allegedly asked, “Is it bad that I have no remorse?”

The woman told police that Ballard allegedly discarded the gun and magazine out the passenger side window while they drove. Police later recovered the 9mm handgun on the side of the road. She said Ballard allegedly planned to return to the store so he could rob it, and told the woman to “comply or she would be killed and left in the woods if she refused.”

The three reportedly went back to the store, but upon seeing police activity there, they returned to Vero Beach, Florida. After the woman dropped Ballard and the other man off, she went straight to the police.

The alleged shooting was captured on surveillance cameras inside the store. According to the warrant, Ballard came into the store and sat across from Rodriguez. The two “begin to engage in casual conversation,” as if they had previously known each other. Ballard was seen “fiddling with his phone” and “bounc[ing] his leg.” Police said he then produced a black firearm that was out of Rodriguez’s view. As Ballard started to wield the gun, his conversation with Rodriguez continued.

After the two spoke for between two and five minutes, Ballard allegedly raised the gun and fired one shot at Rodriguez, hitting her in the shoulder. She stood up, and Ballard allegedly fired three more shots that hit Rodriguez in the chest. She fell to the floor as Ballard emptied his magazine. After Ballard and the other man left, Rodriguez was seen trying to reach for a phone to call for help in her final moments.

The woman called Ballard while she was at the police station for a second interview. During the call, police said he once again said he had no remorse for the shooting. He also told the women that he was at his parents’ house and was planning to leave for New York.

Ballard was arrested at his parents’ house and charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. He is being held without bond at the St. Lucie County Jail. His next court date was not available.

According to reporting by local news outlet TCPalm, Rodriguez, a transgender woman and fixture on the drag queen circuit, was remembered by her friends as an “incredible person with a huge heart” with a family who loved her. Police identified Rodriguez using her birth name, Lazaro Rodriguez Vega.

Royal Baby Joy: Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank Announce Third Pregnancy

0

Today, Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, joyfully revealed they are anticipating the arrival of their third child. The King expressed his happiness about the news, stating he is ‘delighted’ to hear it.

Buckingham Palace shared that the couple’s two sons, August, aged five, and Ernest, aged two, are eagerly anticipating the addition of a new sibling, expressing their excitement over the upcoming arrival.

In a charming photo released by Eugenie, young Ernest is seen dressed in a Chelsea football kit, while August sports a long-sleeved grey T-shirt. The brothers proudly display an image of a baby scan, symbolizing the family’s growing excitement.

The 36-year-old princess posted in an accompanying caption on Instagram: ‘Baby Brooksbank due 2026!’ followed by a series of red heart emojis and one of a baby.

The official statement from Buckingham Palace reads: “Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie and Mr. Jack Brooksbank are very pleased to announce that they are expecting their third child together, due this summer.”

It continues, “August (aged five) and Ernest (aged two) are also very excited to have another sibling join the family.” The announcement marks a joyful moment for the family as they prepare to welcome their newest member.

‘His Majesty The King has been informed and is delighted with the news.’

The baby, who will not be an HRH, will be born 15th in line to the throne, with their great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, moving down to 16th place.

He or she will also be the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the third to be born since her death in 2022.

The new arrival will be the fifth grandchild of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, following the birth of Princess Beatrice’s daughter Athena Mapelli Mozzi in January last year.

The announcement from Buckingham Palace, which posted the news on its social media channel at 10am, will be seen as a show of support for Eugenie despite the troubles surrounding her father.

Andrew – the King’s brother – was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office in February amid the scandal surrounding his friendship with the late paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Eugenie and her sister Beatrice stayed away from the traditional royal gathering on Easter Sunday, with the agreement of Charles, amid the furore over their father.

The princesses, who are granddaughters of the late Queen Elizabeth II, have faced scrutiny themselves after their names appeared in the Epstein files, the US Department of Justice’s document dump relating to the convicted sex offender.

One email exchange suggested their mother Sarah took her daughters to see Epstein in the US days after he was released from prison for child sex crimes.

Eugenie and Beatrice were 19 and 20 at the time.

Princess Eugenie posted family photos celebrating Jack Brooksbank’s 40th birthday yesterday

The former duke and duchess were last seen in public alongside senior members of the Royal Family at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral in September last year.

Mr Brooksbank celebrated his 40th birthday yesterday, with the King’s niece marking the occasion by sharing photographs on her Instagram story of her husband relaxing on a beach with the caption ‘Happy 40th my love’.

The pair married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle in October 2018, and welcomed their first child, August, on February 9, 2021.

His younger brother Ernest was born on May 30, 2023.

Eugenie and Mr Brooksbank’s announcement comes four days after the Daily Mail published exclusive pictures of the couple out on a date night with friends.

Eugenie is known to be a doting parent who has repeatedly spoken about the joys of motherhood.

But she and her husband of seven years also looked to have thoroughly enjoyed a night without their sons August and Ernest.

The couple, who split their time between a Portuguese villa and a Kensington Palace cottage, affectionately call their boys Augie and Ernie.

The mother of two looked positively glowing in a long, loose, black dress and khaki shirt with Jack wearing jeans, trainers, a dark jacket and a wide grin as they left Dorian Restaurant in Notting Hill.

Hours earlier, in a rare public appearance together since the Epstein scandal engulfed the House of York, Beatrice and Eugenie chatted animatedly as they walked through Mayfair near Hanover Square.

One witness said they looked ‘in great spirits as they made the most of the sunshine’.

The younger York sister led the way carrying a light summer jacket and bag while Beatrice, 37, followed her on a narrow path clutching her mobile phone.

Tourists wandering through London’s most exclusive neighbourhood appeared oblivious to the fact they were brushing past royalty.

Their Soho Mews House lunch together last Thursday was the first time the sisters had been seen together in London for six months.

In November, they were spotted hugging each other in the street just hours after their father Andrew was stripped of all his royal titles.

Without their parents, Beatrice and Eugenie joined the Royal Family at Sandringham on Christmas Day as the King showed his support for his nieces.

But as the Epstein scandal swirled once again, and their father was arrested, the pair did not attend the royals’ traditional Easter service gathering at Windsor last month.

Neither have been seen with their mother, Sarah Ferguson, or father in recent months.

Gregg Wallace Expresses Shock Over Contestant’s Mistake on Celebrity MasterChef

In the latest episode of Celebrity MasterChef, a dramatic moment unfolded as judge Greg Wallace was left aghast by a significant misstep from one of the contestants. During Monday’s episode, tensions were high as four celebrities vied for a coveted spot in the quarter-finals.

The lineup included comedian Eshaan Akbar, actresses Danielle Harold and Rochenda Sandall, along with athlete and Gladiator star Harry Aikines-Aryeetey. These contestants faced off in a series of three demanding challenges designed to test their culinary prowess.

A pivotal moment occurred in the initial task known as the Paris Challenge. In this round, the participants were divided into pairs, each tasked with creating identical dishes. The challenge took a surprising turn when Harry, striving to match Rochenda’s samosas, encountered a mishap.

Only Rochenda had access to the recipe, leaving Harry in a tricky spot. The situation worsened when he inadvertently left the oven door slightly ajar, a blunder that could have jeopardized his chances of advancing in the competition.

Harry was attempting to replicate Rochenda’s samosas – with the cruel twist that only she had the recipe – when he failed to close the oven door fully.

Gregg’s co-presenter John Torode, 59, observed: ‘Harry has left his oven door open.’

Meanwhile, Gregg, 59, added in a confessional: ‘Now, if there’s anyone big and strong enough to shut an oven door, it’s Harry! Now it’s touch and go whether they’ll cook or not.’

Despite the blunder, both Gregg and John were pleased when Harry and Rochenda presented their dishes.

Gregg said: ‘I think they look brilliant, I’m really impressed,’ and John added: ‘You’ve done remarkably well here, they do look very similar.’

However, Gregg scolded Harry: ‘Slight overcooking on the lamb. Not enough cookery on your samosa – you didn’t shut the oven door.’

But, it wasn’t enough to stop the pair heading through to the quarter-finals alongside Danielle Harold, meaning Akbar unfortunately headed home.

The second heat had begun in episode four with an additional celebrity, reality television star Chloe Burrows, but she exited at the end.

The first heat premiered on August 12 with Craig Doyle, Charlotte Crosby, Edith Bowman, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, and Snoochie Shy.

Chatham Walgreens Closure Sparks Community Outcry: Chicago Leaders Rally for Local Pharmacy Access

0

CHICAGO (WLS) — On Monday, city officials are slated to address the community regarding the impending closure of another Walgreens store, this time on Chicago’s South Side.

Local community leaders are voicing concerns that this closure is part of a broader trend of corporate withdrawal from the South Side, impacting the area significantly.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

The Walgreens located at 86th Street and Cottage Grove in Chatham is scheduled to shut its doors on June 4, marking yet another loss for the neighborhood.

Residents and community advocates warn that this shutdown will severely limit access to essential pharmacy services for thousands, especially affecting seniors and those with chronic health issues.

This latest closure follows the pattern set last year when Walgreens ceased operations at five other locations in the Bronzeville, Little Village, South Shore, and South Chicago neighborhoods, with a specialty pharmacy on 71st Street also set to close soon.

Sixth Ward Alderman Will Hall released a statement saying, “They extract profit and walk away, knowing full well what it costs this community. When you shut down a pharmacy here, you are cutting off access to medication for seniors and vulnerable residents. This is a life-or-death decision.”

ABC7 has reached out to Walgreens for a statement. Alderman Hall and other community leaders will hold a press conference at 10 a.m.

Jeff Bezos Puts $500 Million Megayacht Koru on the Market: A Luxurious Opportunity Awaits

Isn’t it a bit of a dilemma when your yacht turns out to be overwhelmingly large?

Insiders reveal to Page Six that Jeff Bezos is discreetly looking to sell his opulent $500 million yacht, Koru, deeming it too massive for practical use.

This stunning vessel is accompanied by a $75 million support ship, Abeona, although it’s uncertain if it’s included in the potential sale. Reports suggest managing both ships costs a staggering $30 million annually. While this may not be a financial strain for the billionaire worth $250 billion, it could deter potential buyers.

It’s been suggested that Koru, adorned with a wooden sculpture of Bezos’ wife Lauren Sanchez as a mermaid on its prow, has become overly conspicuous for the Amazon magnate.

Additionally, the yacht boasts water cannons designed to repel pirate attacks, which could conveniently serve to fend off paparazzi as well.

The ship was built to resemble Bezos’ pal and fellow billionaire Barry Diller’s yacht Eos, but on a much larger scale, making it a logistical headache.

The 417-foot vessel is one of the world’s largest sailing yachts. David Geffen’s Rising Sun is slightly bigger at 453 feet, with a source previously noting to the Post that billionaires can suffer from “aquatic penis envy.”

Still bigger is not always better. In 2025, the boat was denied a mooring in Monaco during the Grand Prix due to its size.

The yacht was also unable to get anywhere near the lagoon during Bezo and Sanchez’s summer wedding in Venice. (The couple did throw a lavish foam party onboard during the festivities.)

In 2023, the New York Times reported that Koru was too large to dock in the Florida Everglades, instead hanging out around far less glamorous oil tankers and container ships.

The yacht caused an uproar in 2022, when the builders, Oceanco in the Netherlands, needed to deliver it to Bezos.

There were plans floated in Rotterdam to dismantle a 95 year old bridge called De Hef so the enormous vessel could pass. After outcry from locals, they wound of towing the ship without masts.

Despite its issues, the boat is plenty luxurious, featuring a glass-bottom pool, three jacuzzis and a helipad. It has a crew of 36 and can fit up to 18 guests.

The couple have sailed all over the world in the superyacht, drawing celebrity pals like Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, Katy Perry, Usher and more.

A rep for Bezos’ did not respond to requests for comment.

Unveiling the Met Gala 2023: Exploring the ‘Costume Art’ Theme with a ‘Fashion Is Art’ Dress Code

While most people are busy sprucing up their homes for the holiday season, renowned stylist Law Roach is already planning how to style his long-time muse, Zendaya, for the fashion industry’s most prestigious event.

Discussing the preparation for Zendaya’s 2026 Met Gala ensemble, Roach revealed during a Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session on April 30, just days before the May 4 gala, that “it typically starts about five months ahead of time.” He explained, “The process begins with the designer’s vision for the client. Once that’s established, we have a discussion about the inspiration, and then I bring it back to my team.”

Coincidentally, this timeline aligns with when Anna Wintour and her team announce the theme for the annual benefit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

For 2026, with the theme titled “Costume Art,” the exhibition will pair historic and contemporary garments with art pieces spanning over 5,000 years. Attendees can anticipate witnessing some exceptional creations gracing the museum’s illustrious staircase.

Knicks Face Crucial Decisions to Address Persistent Weakness Against 76ers

0

Josh Hart offered a light-hearted response during his interview, but his words unveiled a significant strategic move.

In the latter part of the Knicks’ first-round playoff victory over the Hawks, Hart took on the task of defending CJ McCollum.

This defensive switch—assigning Hart, instead of Jalen Brunson, to McCollum—proved pivotal in neutralizing McCollum’s impact and ultimately shifting the series in the Knicks’ favor.

Looking ahead, the Knicks face another challenge with the 76ers’ formidable backcourt duo: Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe.

The question now is, what will be their strategy to keep these guards in check?

“Probably just asking Tyrese to slow down a little bit,” Hart said after practice Sunday. “That’d be nice. The style defensively is gonna be totally different. CJ, he doesn’t have that quick acceleration at his old age, so you can be a little bit more physical with him. He’s an Unc. Tyrese and Edgecombe, they’re on the young side. They’re quick, they’re explosive, so there’s definitely a different style of defense. Gonna tell them to slow down a little bit so I can get my hands on them and be physical. It’s a fun matchup.”

It’s not a given that Hart will match up with either Maxey or Edgecombe.

Mikal Bridges would be a more natural or straightforward option, but his struggles in the first round meant he was twice benched — for the majority of the second half in Games 4 and 5.

Dealing with the duo might mean more minutes for Miles McBride or Jose Alvarado off the bench.

Or maybe even Landry Shamet finds his way back into the rotation.

Hart, though, was a defensive force throughout the first round for the Knicks — primarily guarding Jalen Johnson at the beginning of the series and then McCollum at the end.

It’s likely he’ll at least see some time on Maxey or Edgecombe.

It’s those types of quick, athletic guards that gave the Knicks their biggest fits this year.

Maxey is one of the fastest players in the league, able to use his speed to beat defenders off the dribble and create space on the perimeter for 3-pointers.

Edgecombe, a finalist for Rookie of the Year, has a quick first step and is explosive near the rim.

The Knicks’ point-of-attack defense was a talking point all regular season.

It was a weakness for the first half, then after a schematic change, greatly improved by the end.

Maxey and Edgecombe will provide a major test.

Maxey averaged 30.0 points on 51.2 percent shooting from the field and 50.0 percent shooting from 3-point range in the four regular-season matchups — which the two teams split 2-2.

Edgecombe averaged 19.3 points on 52.5 percent shooting from the field and 33.3 percent shooting from deep.

“They’re athletic, quick, dynamic, explosive,” coach Mike Brown said on Sunday. “They can score from all three levels. They can play the pick-and-roll, they can get out and finish in transition. Maxey is the No. 1 guy in transition in the league. They pose a big problem for us with them on defense.”

It’s also very likely Edgecombe will get the responsibility of guarding Brunson on the other end.

He spent the second-most time guarding Brunson among all defenders across the league in the regular season.

Brunson had success — going 10-for-15 from the field and 4-for-6 from deep along with three assists and no turnovers with Edgecombe as his closest defender, per the league’s tracking stats.

But Edgecombe has emerged as a strong defender otherwise.

And Maxey, though he may not scare anyone, is active.

“They’re really good in passing lanes,” Brown said. “Great anticipation, long arms, quick, explosive, great at all those things, which equates to a lot of turnovers for teams. Their guards can give anybody a handful of problems on both ends of the floor.”

When both are clicking at the same time, it’s as dangerous a backcourt as there is in the league.

Slowing them down will be key.
