Illinois Men’s Golf Sets Sights on Big Ten Dominance: Aiming for the Top Spot

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – The Illinois men’s golf team enters the 2026 Big Ten Tournament as the leading contender, aiming to reclaim their dominant position in the conference as they head to North Plains, Oregon, for the start of postseason action.

The Illini ruled the Big Ten with eight consecutive championships from 2015 to 2023, excluding the 2020 season, which was canceled due to COVID-19. However, they finished as runners-up in both 2024 and 2025, with their most recent setback occurring in 2025 when UCLA managed an impressive comeback, erasing an eight-stroke deficit to claim victory.

The 2025-26 season for Illinois has been marked by notable achievements, particularly their triumph at the Duck Invitational in Oregon this March. Junior Max Herendeen shone brightly, clinching the individual title in that tournament. This win was a significant boost for Herendeen, who has experienced a season full of ups and downs. Known as the 2024 Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a unanimous choice for the 2025 All-Big Ten First Team, he has faced challenges this year.

At his peak, Herendeen is arguably the best player on the Illinois roster. However, when off his game, he has struggled to contribute effectively to the team’s overall score.

Now, as Herendeen, originally from Washington, returns to the Pacific Northwest, he hopes to tap into the same winning spirit that propelled him to success during his previous visit to Oregon.

“I just know who I am as a person,” he said. “I know my good golf is really good. It’s just trying to get that bad golf a little bit better. I don’t want that standard to ever slip, trying to hit my standard every day and do the right things. And I know I’m not far off and I know I can help this team and I know I will help this team in the postseason.”

Depth is a strength of this year’s Illini squad, with four players having earned Big Ten Golfer of the Week at some point on the year.

“It’s been a good year and the guys understand that,” head coach Mike Small said. “But can we be better? Yes, we can. So for them to go in, we just want to go in and continue to hit our standard and treat it like any other event. But know in the back of your mind, this is what people remember. This is your legacy. And so I hope there’s a little extra impetus behind it, but you can’t put that too much pressure on yourself that it changes your outlook and change your purpose.”

Conference championship action is scheduled for three rounds May 1-3.

Shocking Turn: Anti-Gun Violence Advocate and Former MMA Fighter Convicted in 2024 Shooting Murder

0

A former mixed martial arts athlete, who once championed the cause of reducing gun violence through his nonprofit organization, now finds himself at the center of a tragic irony. Earlier this week, Lumumba Sayers was found guilty of murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Colorado.

The verdict, delivered by a jury, found the 47-year-old guilty of second-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and an attempt to tamper with physical violence. This was confirmed by a statement from the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Sayers faces a sentencing hearing scheduled for July 24, where he could receive a prison term ranging from 16 to 48 years, as dictated by Colorado’s sentencing guidelines for second-degree murder.

Lumumba Sayers

The shocking incident unfolded on August 10, 2024, when Sayers, after attending an anti-violence event, made his way to a children’s birthday party at a local water park. It was there that he approached Malcolm Johnson and fatally shot him multiple times, as detailed in a report by Colorado Public Radio.

The arrest of Sayers, documented in his mugshot provided by the Adam’s County Sheriff’s Office, has sent ripples through the community, adding a grim chapter to his paradoxical journey from a violence prevention advocate to a convicted murderer.

Sayers admitted to having a weapon on him at the time of the murder, but that was not the weapon used to KILL Johnson, the Macomb Daily reported. Prosecutors said an untraceable 3-D printed gun, or “ghost gun,” was used in the shooting. It was never found.

They said it was handed off to another man, never to be seen again. There was no surveillance video of the murder.

The murder was carried out in revenge after Sayers’ son, Lumumba Sayers Jr., was gunned down in August 2023, prosecutors said. A man named Tyrell Braxton was charged in that case, but the case was eventually dismissed.

Sayers reportedly believed Johnson was involved in his son’s murder. Prosecutors also said that Sayers attempted to plant the gun on Johnson after the killing. Sayers contended he was simply removing his gun and putting it down before police arrived on the scene.

The now-convicted murderer ran Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts, a nonprofit that describes itself as a “non-profit organization dedicated to transforming lives through education, mentorship, and community.” It is heavily focused on physical training, and reportedly received state and federal grants for its “Glovez Up, Gunz Down Movement” program.

“At Heavy Hands Heavy Hearts, we foster a culture of accountability, both in and out of the gym,” the organization’s site says. “Through training, individuals learn discipline, respect, and self-control, promoting responsible behavior and healthy relationships.”

Sayers competed in Strikeforce MMA in 2011 and 2012, where he fought against future UFC contenders, according to MMA Junkie. Strikeforce was acquired by a different company and eventually absorbed completely into UFC.

Sayers’ attorney did not immediately return a request for comment.

Teachers’ Unions Redirect $1 Billion Towards Democratic Campaigns: A Closer Look

0

The latest revelations have sent shockwaves through the teaching community. Teachers who have dutifully paid their union dues, believing these contributions were earmarked for securing better wages, improved benefits, or fair contracts, might want to take a closer look. According to a newly published report by Defending Education, a significant portion of these funds has been channeled into what can only be described as an extensive political funding operation, with your money right in the mix.

Since August 2015, the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) have collectively redirected $669,324,912.33 in member dues and PAC funds to various left-leaning political organizations, progressive nonprofits, and Democratic campaign efforts. When you factor in contributions from state and local affiliates, this figure climbs beyond $1 billion.

Rhyen Staley from Defending Education provides a straightforward breakdown:

The financial trail is quite revealing. The State Engagement Fund, a key Democratic Party support mechanism, received $60,525,000. Meanwhile, the For Our Future Action Fund was allocated $44,732,078. The Senate Majority PAC was granted $32,655,000, and the House Majority PAC received $25,842,790. Additionally, the Strategic Victory Fund, established in 2020 with the specific aim of unseating Donald Trump, secured $19,300,000.

Beyond these allocations, the unions directed over $85 million straight into Democratic Party coffers at every level of government, excluding individual candidate donations. The Biden Victory Fund was supported with $923,500, while the Hillary Victory Fund received $444,250. Contributions also included $725,000 to the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation, with an additional $400,000 going to the Clinton Global Initiative.

The big money tells the story. The State Engagement Fund, a Democratic Party infrastructure vehicle, received $60,525,000. The For Our Future Action Fund took $44,732,078. The Senate Majority PAC received $32,655,000. The House Majority PAC got $25,842,790. The Strategic Victory Fund, created in 2020 explicitly to defeat Donald Trump, received $19,300,000.

On top of all that, the unions pumped over $85 million directly into Democrat Party entities at every level of government, not counting a single dollar in individual candidate contributions. The Biden Victory Fund received $923,500. The Hillary Victory Fund got $444,250. The Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation collected $725,000, with another $400,000 to the Clinton Global Initiative.

This is the wholesale conversion of teacher paychecks into a Democrat Party slush fund.

The ideological line items are worse. Media Matters for America received $700,000. The Sixteen Thirty Fund, a dark money vehicle in the Arabella Advisors network, received $4,433,000. Color of Change and its PAC got $3,310,000. Planned Parenthood Votes received $350,000.

Teachers’ Unions Now Blowing $2M on Protest Training While Kids Can’t Read

The NEA paid the Trevor Project $100,000, an organization whose chatroom was described as a “Pandora’s box” of disturbing content that encouraged minors to hide gender transitions from their parents. The Trump administration defunded the group last year by cutting a $26 million federal contract. The unions cut a check directly to race theorist Ibram X. Kendi for $7,418. They paid Gender Inclusivity LLC $29,250. They funneled $1,755,000 to the Midwest Academy, a group currently training activists for the May Day 2026 mobilization. This is not a union protecting teachers. It is a political apparatus funding the ideological transformation of American life.

Perhaps most cynically, the unions spent massively to kill school choice. Support Our Schools Nebraska, which repealed a school choice law, received $4,298,076 from the NEA. Protect Our Schools Kentucky received $7,215,000 to fight voucher legislation. Public Schools Strong received $4,137,500 to campaign against school choice in Colorado. Save Our Public Schools got $5,400,000.

The partisan fingerprints at the local level are just as damning. The Ohio Education Association gave $2.9 million to the Ohio Democrat Party and $23,249 to the Ohio House Republican Alliance, a ratio of 125 to 1. The Chicago Teachers’ Union funded the Chicago Aldermanic Black Caucus, the Chicago Alliance Against Racial and Political Oppression, and the Chicago City Council Latino Caucus. Its expense records show zero dollars to the Illinois Republican Party. Not one cent.

Nicole Neily, Defending Education’s president, was equally blunt:

“Educators are victims of a bait-and-switch: instead of their dues going to advocate for increased pay or improved working environments, they’re being spent advancing a hard-left political agenda, underwriting causes such as climate change, gender activism, and abortion.”

A billion dollars spent. Not on teachers. Not on students. Not on classrooms or salaries. On political power. The only question left is whether the teachers who were robbed will finally demand their money back.

Crystal Kung Minkoff Shares Insights on Kyle Richards’ Perspective Regarding Amanda Frances Controversy

Crystal Kung Minkoff recently opened up about a conversation she had with Kyle Richards, shedding light on what Kyle had to say regarding the ongoing drama involving Amanda Frances. Additionally, Crystal shared her thoughts on how her fellow castmates addressed Dorit Kemsley’s financial situation during the latest Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion.

This season, several cast members criticized Amanda for her business centered around money manifestation. However, Kyle, who introduced Amanda to the group, stood out as one of her few defenders.

During the reunion, Kyle hinted at Dorit possibly experiencing financial difficulties, while Erika Jayne mentioned reports of a potential foreclosure on Dorit’s home.

“I bumped into Kyle,” Crystal shared on the podcast Humble Brag, as documented by @byewighellodrama on Instagram. “She expressed to me that she felt genuinely sorry for Amanda. Kyle was very much like, ‘I tried to safeguard her… Everyone was so harsh towards her.'”

“I ran into Kyle,” said Crystal on Humble Brag, via @byewighellodrama on Instagram. “She said to me she felt really bad for Amanda. She was very like, ‘I tried to protect her. … Everyone was so mean to her.’”

“And I said, ‘I know,’” Crystal continued. “We were talking about her being sort of … the OG that welcomes [the newbies]. It’s like on her to welcome newbies. But she said, ‘I really tried with Amanda. I really worked hard.’”

According to Crystal, Kyle had just finished a gallery shoot for Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip when they spoke.

“And she said, ‘[The shoot] was so nice because … no one’s fighting. Like you’re actually going to the studio to have fun and take pictures,’” added Crystal. She then addressed gallery shoots in general, saying, “When you [usually] do those shoots … it’s always after the season, before reunion. … So it’s like you haven’t fought it out yet, but it’s still uncomfortable.”

Later on, Crystal addressed how Kyle and Erika brought up Dorit’s alleged financial struggles at the reunion (amid claims that she spends too extravagantly).

“I’m like, ‘Whoa,’” said Crystal, recalling her reaction. “They’re all facts, but … it stings. But it’s also like, this is reality, and the economy is really rough. I think it’s a very hard situation to be a Housewife. I think people don’t really realize the pressure there is to keep up with the Joneses.”

“People don’t want to watch broke people,” she added. “They want to see wealth. … But then it’s like, what do you have to give up to get there?”

New episodes of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills air on Thursday nights on Bravo.

Zephyrhills Man Charged After Alleged Meeting with Teenage Girl in Gainesville

0

Christopher F. Reteneller, a 41-year-old resident of Zephyrhills, finds himself facing serious legal troubles after being charged with seven felony counts involving illicit encounters with a 16-year-old girl from Gainesville. These charges stem from alleged meetings where the two engaged in sexual activities on more than one occasion.

The case came to light on April 7, when the girl bravely stepped forward to report the incidents. According to her account, Reteneller made two trips from Zephyrhills to Gainesville, specifically on March 29 and April 7, with the intent of meeting her for sexual purposes.

The teenager recounted that their acquaintance began on a chat website where they exchanged contact details and soon started communicating via text messages. The first encounter reportedly took place on March 29, when Reteneller traveled to Gainesville and met the girl at a bus stop close to her residence. He then took her to a McDonald’s, where he bought her food. Following this, they drove to an unspecified church parking lot, where the alleged sexual activity occurred after an initial kiss in his car.

The second meeting was said to have occurred on April 7, with Reteneller once again traveling to Gainesville to meet the girl. Similar to the previous encounter, they are alleged to have gone to another unknown church location, where further sexual activities took place.

On April 7, Reteneller reportedly drove to Gainesville again and picked up the victim near her home; he allegedly took the victim to an unknown church again, and they engaged in sexual activities.

Reteneller reportedly took the victim to Popeyes and bought her a sandwich, and then they went to Depot Park and walked on the trail before driving to TB McPherson, where Reteneller allegedly tried to have sexual intercourse with the victim in the bathroom, but it hurt her.

The victim said she asked him to stop, but he continued, and she tried multiple times to leave the bathroom, but he kept pulling her back; she eventually escaped and told Reteneller that she was 16 because she was upset that he had not stopped. The Gainesville Police Department officer who investigated the case noted that the victim looks younger than 16, “and any reasonable person would not believe that she was over the age of 18.” The victim said that when she told Reteneller her age, he said they would need to keep their relationship on the “down low.”

Reteneller allegedly drove the victim to an apartment complex near her house, which she was able to describe to the officer, and he again tried to have sexual intercourse with her. Next, he reportedly drove her to a gas station, where they got into the back seat of his car; he allegedly raped her while she repeatedly asked him to stop and tried to push him away, but he said he just wanted to finish.

After Reteneller drove the victim home, he reportedly sent her a text and told her he was sorry.

A medical exam reportedly showed that the victim had significant injuries that are consistent with sexual abuse.

The officer used Reteneller’s phone number and description to identify him, and traffic cameras reportedly showed that his vehicle was in the locations described by the victim at the time of the incidents; the officer noted that Reteneller has no ties to Gainesville, and his vehicle has not been seen on local traffic cameras except for those two dates.

Reteneller has been charged with four counts of sexual battery with a victim under 18, two counts of traveling to meet a minor for unlawful sexual contact, and one count of unlawful use of a two-way communications device. He is being held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s Office to hold him without bail until trial; if the judge denies the motion, bail will be set at that hearing.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

French Teen Faces Charges in Singapore for Vending Machine Straw Incident Video

0

A teenager from France is now facing charges of mischief and public nuisance in Singapore following the release of a social media video in which he is seen licking a straw from an orange juice vending machine before returning it to its place.

The individual, identified as 18-year-old Didier Gaspard Owen Maximilien, was formally charged on April 24. According to The Straits Times, Singapore’s leading English-language newspaper, he has not yet entered a plea.

The incident allegedly took place in a shopping mall on March 12, and the video quickly gained widespread attention upon its release, as reported by the newspaper.

On Wednesday, the court allowed the teen to travel to Manila from May 2 to May 25 for a required school trip necessary for his graduation, according to The Straits Times. He is expected to return to court on May 29.

If found guilty of mischief, the teen could face up to two years in prison, a fine, or both. The public nuisance charge is less severe, carrying a potential penalty of up to three months in jail, a fine, or both.

IJooz, the company operating the juice vending machine, filed a police report, and sanitized the dispenser while replacing all 500 straws in the machine.

It said it would upgrade its machines to include measures such as individually packaged straws and straw compartments that unlock only after the transaction is completed.

Lawyers for the teen, who is studying in a French business school in Singapore, declined to comment on the case when contacted.

Singapore, a small, densely populated city-state, tightly regulates public behavior and cleanliness. This includes restrictions like limits on chewing gum and strong penalties for littering and vandalism.

Discovery Made in Search for Missing Girl in Northern Territory

NOTICE: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this article includes a photo of a deceased individual.

A missing Alice Springs girl has been found dead days after her suspected abduction over the weekend.
Before midday today, Northern Territory police found the body of a girl believed to be missing five-year-old Kumanjayi Little Baby, as she is now referred to in line with local Indigenous customs.

This afternoon, a heart-wrenching statement was released by the grieving mother and brother of a young child who passed away, expressing their profound sorrow.

“To our beloved Kumanjayi Little Baby, both Ramsiah and I are filled with love and longing for you,” the statement began.

“I am comforted knowing you are in heaven, surrounded by our family, under the care of Jesus and the Holy Trinity.”

“Your brother and I look forward to the day we reunite with you, as we dedicate our lives to Jesus,” they continued.

“It is going to be so hard to live the rest of our lives without you.

“Ramsiah wants to tell you that when he sees you in heaven he is going to give you the biggest hug ever.

“Love from Mum and Ramsiah.”

Police said Kumanjayi’s body was found about five kilometres south of the crime scene.

Police said Jefferson Lewis, the man who police suspect abducted the young girl over the weekend, has not been found.

”The focus right now is to Jefferson Lewis, it is our sole job in this investigation right now,” Northern Territory Assistant Police Commissioner Peter Malley said.

Police Commissioner Martin Dole said the discovery of the girl's body was the "worst possible outcome".

“I say to the family of Jefferson Lewis that we believe he’s murdered this child.

“Do not assist him, get him to the police station and we’ll look after him.

“And I say to Jefferson Lewis, we’re coming for you.”

Police Commissioner Martin Dole said the discovery of the girl’s body was the “worst possible outcome”.

“This is an incredibly distressing development,” he said.

Dole said her family has been formally notified by police.

He said officers were not in a position today to provide answers around the cause of the girl’s death or how long she may have been dead.

“A post-mortem examination will be conducted, likely tomorrow, and that will be a critical step in establishing those facts.

“The criminal investigation is ongoing and a coronial inquest will now also begin.

“As a result, there will now be limitations on what we can say publicly.”

Dole described the news as “devastating” for the family of Kumanjayi Little Baby, first responders, the Alice Springs community and everyone around Australia who has been worried about her.

“The support shown during the time has been overwhelming.”

Yesterday, police revealed they had found clothing on the riverbank near Old Timers Camp during their search.

Malley said the items had been taken to Darwin for analysis.

“Of significance is the pair of child’s underwear,” he said.

“We located two DNA profiles [on clothing]… one, as expected, belongs to the little girl and the other belongs to Jefferson Lewis.”

‘Dark days like this rock everyone’

NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro spoke with the five-year-old’s mother to offer her “sincerest and heartfelt condolences” over the phone today.

“Right now we are focused on a grieving family, a grieving town and a grieving Northern Territory,” she said.

“As our police have said, we now focus our energy in making sure we find the person who did this and bring them to justice.”

Finocchiaro took the opportunity to thank the volunteers who assisted with search efforts.

“Around 200 people have worked tirelessly around the clock in searching for this beautiful little girl who went missing five days ago,” she said.

“For five days, every Territorian has had their heart in their throat waiting for the moment waiting for the moment when we got the announcement that she had been found safe and well.

“That news did not come and it’s fair to say that everyone is feeling this loss acutely, everyone is incredibly devastated by the outcome.

“Our hearts are all with people grieving this loss and my thanks go to every single person who volunteered to walk through the bush, to walk through the long grass, to walk up the hills, to do everything that they could to find her.

“To our police and emergency services who’ve done an incredible job and now focus their energy on bringing the person who did this to justice.

“I thank everyone and I ask the Alice Springs community to really rally around each other at this devastating time.

“As a mother, as a member of our community, dark days like this rock everyone and the heartbreak of this is real.

“I’ve also spoken to our colleague Jacinta Nampijinpa Price, who is the aunty of Kumanjayi Little Baby.

“Over the days and weeks, we stick together as Territorians, like we always do.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone at this absolutely awful time.”

Trump Accuses James Comey of Potentially Misleading the FBI and Labels Him a ‘Dirty Cop

0

In a fiery exchange, President Trump lashed out at former FBI Director James Comey, labeling him a “dirty cop.” Trump suggested that Comey might have misled the FBI by using language reminiscent of organized crime to threaten the president.

James Comey found himself in legal hot water as he appeared at the federal courthouse in the Eastern District of Virginia on Wednesday. He faces federal charges related to accusations of threatening the president and using interstate commerce to transmit a threat.

The controversy revolves around an Instagram post Comey shared last May. The post included seashells arranged to spell “8647,” a configuration that has gained traction among radical critics of President Trump. Trump and his supporters interpret this as an ominous message implying a call for his assassination.

The number 86 is often used in slang to signify removing or getting rid of something, though it can also carry the more sinister connotation of killing. The number 47 refers to Trump as the 47th President, adding to the charged interpretation of the message.

The number 86 is slang for removing or getting rid of something, though it can also mean to kill. Trump is the 47th President.

‘”86″ is a mob term for “kill him,”‘ Trump said on Wednesday night. ‘They say 86 him! 86 47 means “kill President Trump,”‘ he said on Truth Social.

Trump added: ‘James Comey, who is a Dirty Cop, one of the worst, knows this full well! EIGHT MILES OUT, SIX FEET DOWN!’

The president then pondered whether Comey had lied to investigators about his familiarity of the phrase.

‘Didn’t he also lie to the FBI about this??? I think so!’

But Comey declared his innocence in a video posted to Substack on Tuesday.

‘I’m still innocent, I’m still not afraid and I still believe in the independent federal judiciary, so let’s go,’ Comey said.

His defense team is now planning to file motions accusing the Department of Justice of selectively and vindictively prosecuting him at Trump’s order – something Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has denied.

Comey posted the controversial photo last year with the caption: ‘Cool shell formation on my beach walk.’ He later deleted the post the same day and apologized.

But Trump’s allies quickly claimed the post called for Trump’s assassination. Then-homeland security secretary Kristi Noem said the Secret Service would investigate the former FBI director.

Secret Service agents conducted an hours-long interview with Comey soon afterward. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard at the time said he should be ‘put behind bars for this’ and that she was ‘concerned’ Trump’s life was in danger.

The Justice Department now argues in an indictment that Comey ‘knowingly and willfully’ made threats against the president’s life and transmitted the threat on social media.

Prosecutors do not spell out what the numbers mean in the indictment, but it claims that a ‘reasonable recipient who is familiar with the circumstances’ would interpret the photo as a ‘serious expression of intent to do harm to the President of the United States.’

‘You cannot threaten to kill the President of the United States. Full stop,’ Blanche said at a press conference on Tuesday.

When he was then asked later on Wednesday whether everyone posting ‘8647’ would be charged, Blanche responded: ‘Every case is different; every threats case is different.’

But legal experts, including some conservatives who typically defend the Trump administration’s actions, expect the case to be dismissed long before it goes to trial.

‘As one of his longest and most vocal critics, I would frankly prefer to crawl into one of Comey’s conversant shells than write this column,’ scholar Jonathan Turley posted on his blog on Wednesday.

‘However, here we are. This indictment is unconstitutional and will not likely survive constitutional challenge.’

Blanche’s push to indict Comey comes just one month after Trump fired his predecessor, Pam Bondi, for failing to pursue his perceived enemies aggressively enough.

Trump accidentally posted a message on Truth Social in September, pressuring Bondi to prosecute his political enemies, including Comey.

Days later, Comey was indicted on charges of making a false statement to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding, related to his 2020 Senate Judiciary Committee.

A federal judge dismissed the indictment in November, however, ruling that the prosecutor who brought the case, Lindsey Halligan, had been unlawfully appointed.

But by then, the Justice Department had dropped its investigation into the seashells posts, according to The New York Times.

Blanche – who served as Trump’s personal lawyer before joining the administration – has since revived the case as he leads the administration’s efforts to target Trump’s enemies.

Comey led the FBI’s investigation into alleged Russian collusion with the Trump campaign during the 2016 election, before the president fired him the following year.

He remains one of Trump’s most vocal critics on network television.

When the president was then asked about the case from the Oval Office on Wednesday, Trump said he thought people like Comey created ‘tremendous danger for politicians and others.’

‘Comey is a dirty cop. He’s a very dirty cop,’ the president told reporters. ‘He’s a crooked man.’

Louisiana Sheriff Faces Charges Following Jailbreak Incident Allowing 10 Inmates to Escape

0

A Louisiana sheriff is now entangled in a series of charges related to the notorious jailbreak in New Orleans, marking one of the largest prison escapes in American history.

Sheriff Susan Hutson of Orleans Parish, aged 59, has been hit with a comprehensive 30-count indictment. The charges, which include obstruction of justice, malfeasance, and falsifying public records, were announced on Wednesday, as per a statement from Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s office.

Additionally, Bianka Brown, the Chief Financial Officer, faces 20 felony charges, as officials have reported.

The accusations are linked to a significant incident in May 2025, when 10 inmates broke out of the Orleans Justice Center, according to Murrill’s office.

“Nearly a year ago, I made a commitment to the people of New Orleans and the people of our state that those responsible for the Orleans Parish Prison break would be held accountable,” Murrill said in a statement.

“Since that day, through the hard work of my office, along with the Louisiana State Police and our many federal, state and local law enforcement partners, every escapee is behind bars, and others who facilitated and enabled the escape are currently being prosecuted.”

Murrill also alleges Hutson’s poor leadership played a key role in the escape of nearly a dozen dangerous inmates, including some facing murder charges, after they broke out of jail from behind a toilet.

All 10 inmates were subsequently captured after a nationwide manhunt.

“While Sheriff Hutson did not personally open the doors of the jail for the escapees, her refusal to comply with basic legal requirements and to take even minimal precautions in the discharge of her duties directly contributed to and enabled the escape,” Murrill said.

The charges come just days before Hutson was set to leave office after only receiving 17% of the vote in her re-election bid in October, FOX 8 reported.

Hutson’s term was reportedly plagued by the infamous jailbreak, several other controversies and calls for her to resign as sheriff.

She had never worked in a jail when she unseated four-term former Sheriff Marlin Gusman in 2021 and had minimal law enforcement experience after working as the city’s independent police monitor and an attorney specializing in police oversight, according to FOX 8.

Additionally, state auditors recently reported nearly $260,000 in suspicious overpayments for security details, with previous scandals involving allegations that Hutson dropped large sums of cash on hotel rooms for her top officials during Mardi Gras, according to FOX 8.

New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Michelle Woodfork was elected by voters to succeed Hutson and is expected to be sworn in on Monday, the outlet reported.

“As my prosecutors move forward with this case, I continue to have productive conversations with Sheriff-elect Michelle Woodfork on how to improve operations, secure the facility and build in basic financial oversight that complies with state law,” Murrill added. “I am confident in her commitment to implement the difficult changes needed to reform the jail.”

A judge has set Hutson’s bond at $300,000 and Brown’s bond at $200,000, while also ordering both women to hand over their passports and remain in the state of Louisiana.

Hutson and Brown are scheduled to appear in court for a status hearing Thursday.

Fox News Digital reached out to Hutson, Brown and the Louisiana Office of the Attorney General for comment.
