Critics Slam ‘Michael’ Biopic: Debut Plagued by Disappointing Rotten Tomatoes Score

Critics have expressed their disappointment with the upcoming biopic about the legendary pop star Michael Jackson.

The film, titled Michael, chronicles the singer’s extraordinary journey from his beginnings with the Jackson 5 to his reign as a global solo sensation. In a unique casting choice, Michael’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, steps into his uncle’s iconic shoes. Jaafar, 29, is the son of Michael’s older brother, Jermaine Jackson.

Although Michael is set for release on Friday, April 24, early reviews have already surfaced, and they don’t paint a promising picture. The film currently holds a 32 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics offering mixed feedback.

A review from Consequence criticizes the film for its lack of depth, stating, “This is a movie terrified to explore the interiority of its protagonist, and that approach will work just fine for the fans who just want to watch an uncomplicated ramble of a movie that plays all the hits,” and assigns it a C-minus rating.

Did Janet Jackson Fight With Jermaine at Michael Screening

Meanwhile, rumors have circulated about a heated disagreement involving Janet Jackson, her brother Jermaine, and other family members concerning the biopic. However, close associates of Janet firmly deny such claims. Her longtime artistic director, Gil Duldulao, dismissed the speculation in response to a post on X, maintaining that there is no truth to these rumors.

The Associated Press also gave Michael one and half stars out of four.

“The nostalgia of Michael is for more than Michael Jackson. But blindly believing only in that celebrity, in that fantasy, is repeating a sad history all over again,” the review read.

Despite receiving harsh backlash from some, other critics shared praise for the biopic.

“Simply put, this is not a movie about Michael Jackson’s dark side. Yet the surprise of “Michael” is how well it plays, and what an engrossing middle-of-the-road biopic it is,” Variety wrote.

Deadline applauded Jaafar’s performance in his film debut writing, “This guy channels Uncle Michael in uncanny ways, and simply sells this performance with all the right dance moves and sharp dramatic talent to make us believe Michael Jackson is once again with us.”

Paris Jackson Denies Involvement in Michael Biopic After Colman Domingo Claimed She Helped Him Prepare for Role

Paris Jackson publicly questioned Colman Domingo‘s comments about her alleged involvement in helping him prepare for the upcoming biopic about her late father, Michael Jackson. On Monday, September 1, Domingo, 55, was asked by People about playing Jackson’s father, Joe Jackson, in the movie. “[Michael’s kids Paris and Prince are] very much in support of […]

Earlier this week, several members of the Jackson family attended the Los Angeles premiere for the film. Michael’s siblings Jermaine, La Toya Jackson, Marlon Jackson and Jackie Jackson, as well as his son Prince, 29, were all in attendance at the Monday, April 20, event in Los Angeles.

Michael’s sister Janet Jackson and daughter Paris Jackson were noticeably missing from the premiere. Paris has been outspoken against the film and shared that she has “zero percent involvement” in the project.

“I read one of the first drafts of the script and gave my thoughts on what was dishonest/didn’t sit right with me and when they didn’t address it I moved on with my life,” Paris wrote via her Instagram Story in 2025. “Not my monkeys not my circus. God bless and god speed.”

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has unveiled details surrounding the untimely demise of Vince Zampella, a pivotal figure behind Call of Duty, who tragically passed away at 55. The incident occurred on December 21 in Altadena, California, resulting from a dramatic car accident.

While being filmed, the Electronic Arts executive vice president was driving a 2026 red Ferrari 296 GTS. He lost control while navigating a tunnel, veered off the Angeles Crest Highway near mile marker 62, and collided with a concrete barrier, leading to the vehicle catching fire.

Zampella was trapped inside the engulfed car and succumbed to smoke inhalation, thermal injuries, and blunt force trauma at the scene, as reported by TMZ.

His companion, identified as Kim, was thrown from the car during the accident and passed away later at a nearby hospital in the vicinity of the San Gabriel Mountains.

The California Highway Patrol is still investigating the crash, though high speed is believed to have significantly contributed, based on the available cell phone footage.

Police Report: Woman Opens Fire on Trio During Ladies’ Night Out

A Florida woman is currently in custody following allegations of opening fire on a group of women as they exited a restaurant.

Samantha Morales, 34, is facing multiple charges after reportedly driving up to three women outside a restaurant on the evening of April 17 and shooting at them, injuring two. During a bond hearing on Monday, a judge ruled that Morales would remain detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond.

As detailed in an arrest report obtained by Law&Crime, the incident unfolded as the three women were saying their farewells outside the Dr. Limon restaurant in Homestead, Florida. Morales, a stranger to the women, allegedly approached them in her black Tesla. One of the women recounted to police that Morales called out to them from her vehicle, inquiring, “You all good?”

In response, one woman assured Morales, saying, “Yes, we good. Are you good?”

Morales is said to have retorted, “Yes, b—, but it looks like you have a problem.” A witness reported to police that Morales then opened her car door and challenged the women, asking, “What are you gonna do about it?”

According to the arrest report, the women verbally confronted Morales while another witness told them to get away because Morales had a gun. Police said at some point, Morales fired two shots and hit two of the women. A physical altercation ensued as one of the women “lunged” at Morales in an attempt to knock the gun away from her. The alleged fight ended when police arrived and separated the women from Morales.

Morales was read her rights and told police that she did not remember what happened, except that she was “fighting for her life.” Police said she admitted to having “three alcoholic beverages” before the alleged shooting.

Morales was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, three counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, one count of using a firearm, and two misdemeanors. She is in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where she was ordered to be held without bond. She is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday and will be arraigned on May 18.

Local independent news outlet WPLG reported that the two women who were shot were in stable condition.

Rising Tensions: Calls Intensify to Increase Australia’s Minimal Gas Tax Amid Energy Policy Debate

0

In brief

  • A Senate inquiry has heard from think tanks, economists and other groups in support of higher levies on gax exports.
  • Gas producers are expected to give evidence in later hearings.

An esteemed economist has highlighted the need for Australians to receive a more equitable share of the profits from gas extraction, criticizing the current resource tax framework for yielding disappointing returns.

Ken Henry, a former Treasury secretary and the author of a significant tax review, has voiced concerns over the inadequacy of Australia’s current system for generating revenue from gas resources.

Addressing a Senate inquiry focused on gas exports, Henry remarked, “Some might point to the role of the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) in taxing gas, and while it does contribute, that contribution is minimal.”

He further emphasized, “The contribution is so negligible that it should not be used as a justification against reforming our taxation policies.”

Henry also noted that entrenched interests have long hindered substantial tax reform, whilst highlighting the environmental impact of exporting gas for combustion overseas.

Parliamentarians heard from think tanks, economists, environmental charities and social services groups on Tuesday, all broadly in support of higher levies on gas exports.

Gas producers will give evidence in later hearings.

Broad support for raising taxes on gas exporters

A broad array of crossbenchers, as well as Liberal industry spokesman Andrew Hastie, Commonwealth Bank chief executive Matt Comyn and Labor backbencher Ed Husic have supported raising taxes on gas exporters in the May budget.

Momentum has been building behind a 25 per cent levy on gas exports, though other models have been discussed.

A prominent grassroots Labor environment group offered in-principle support for increasing taxpayer returns on revenue generated by fossil fuel companies.

Labor Environment Action Network national secretary Janaline Oh said tax changes should be considered carefully to maintain trading relationships with potential buyers of green products, as Australia realises its renewable superpower ambitions.

“We do need to take seriously the potential consequences of an investment, but also just on our trading partners,” Oh told the hearing.

“It would be a big mistake to assume that our trading partners are going to react in particular ways, and particularly trading partners with whom we have very mutually dependent relationships in terms of energy trade.”

Plans to implement a tougher export tax regime have not been announced by the federal government, though Treasury modelling on new levy options has been requested.

Resources Minister Madeleine King has previously signalled no change to export tax policies and highlighted the importance of the gas industry.

‘They are playing us for fools’

Peak body Australian Energy Producers, which points out the oil and gas industry paid almost $22 billion in taxes and royalties in 2024/25, argues raising taxes would discourage investment in Australia, pushing companies to explore projects elsewhere.

Opposition resources spokeswoman Susan McDonald said major investments in gas exploration projects were supporting regional towns and local jobs.

She asked The Australia Institute’s co-chief, Richard Denniss, what would happen if gas producers took their business to other countries.

“They are playing us for fools,” he replied.

“When they say, ‘if you don’t give me free gas, I’ll take my bat and ball, but not your gas, and go somewhere else’.”

The left-leaning think tank presented fresh analysis on public revenue generated by one of Australia’s top gas buyers, Japan, by taxing imports of the resource.

It found the Japanese government was earning more public revenue on its gas imports than the Australian government raised taxing exports of the valuable resource.

High School Counselor Admits Guilt in Disturbing Teen Sex Crime Scandal

A high school counselor and volleyball coach from North Carolina has been sentenced to a maximum of 40 years in prison following her admission to sexually abusing a teenage student she was meant to assist with anxiety, as reported by authorities.

Jessica Patrick Finley confessed on Thursday to several felony charges related to sexual misconduct with a minor, including six counts of statutory sex offense with a child, eight counts of indecent liberties with a child, engaging in a sex act with a student, and other offenses involving a child under 15, according to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI).

Employed at McDowell High School, Finley was accused of grooming a 14-year-old student during the 2023–24 academic year, starting with inappropriate communication that eventually led to sexual interactions, as revealed by investigators.

The alleged abuse partly occurred in Finley’s office at the school, where the student had initially reached out for counseling assistance.

During victim impact statements, the teen’s sister described Finley as “a predator… lurking behind the walls of the counseling office, waiting for a victim,” McDowell News reported.

“We would have beat the door hinges off that building to save her from that monster,” the girl’s mother said.

Court documents obtained by local station WLOS reportedly showed the relationship included explicit text messages discussing sexual encounters and future acts, with prosecutors saying many of the encounters occurred after the victim turned 15.

Finley also told the student she planned to leave her husband and children to be with her, according to court filings.

The relationship came to light after the teen’s parents discovered the messages and reported them to authorities, prompting Finley’s resignation from McDowell County Schools in February 2024.

The NCSBI launched an investigation at the request of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, ultimately charging Finley with numerous sex crimes.

Finley initially declined a plea agreement in April 2025 and attempted to have her bond reduced, which was denied.

She ultimately pleaded guilty to all charges in superior court on Thursday.

“I would just like to say I am so sorry for my actions and the things I have caused, for the pain I have caused,” Finley reportedly said in court.

She was sentenced to a minimum of 28 years and four months and a maximum of 40 years and six months in prison.

Trump Extends Ceasefire Agreement with Iran

European Union’s transportation ministers convened in Brussels on Tuesday to address the surge in energy costs triggered by the conflict in Iran. They focused on strategies to safeguard consumers at home and at the fuel pumps, following the International Energy Agency’s cautionary note that Europe might only have “around six weeks” of jet fuel left.

“The unfolding geopolitical tension in the Middle East has underscored the potential short-term fuel supply challenges for Europe,” remarked Cyprus Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, who presided over the online gathering.

Vafeades emphasized that while there isn’t an immediate crisis, the EU should be prepared for possible shortages.

“Such a scenario could disrupt connectivity and impact every EU citizen,” he explained.

“We must be proactive to prevent long lines at gas stations if such a situation arises,” Vafeades added.

Fairfax County Illegal Immigrant Sentenced for High School Assaults: Justice Served

0

An undocumented immigrant, nearly 19 years old and still a high school junior, received a sentence of less than a year in jail on Tuesday for inappropriately touching almost a dozen girls in the corridors of a Virginia high school.

Israel Flores Ortiz, hailing from El Salvador, entered the United States without documentation in 2024. Last month, he faced charges for groping teenage girls at Fairfax High School.

The 18-year-old was convicted on nine counts of assault and battery earlier this month in this unsettling case, according to a report by Fox News.

While he was sentenced to serve over a year, his actual time behind bars is reduced to 135 days, taking into account the time he has already spent in custody and other considerations, as reported by the outlet.

“I hurt them,” Ortiz admitted in court, offering an apology to both the victims and his parents.

Meanwhile, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have filed a detainer to take Flores Ortiz into custody for deportation proceedings when he completes his local jail sentence.

Fairfax County has sanctuary laws that restrict cooperation with ICE and the sheriff’s office usually does not comply with immigration detainers.

The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office was tipped off to the sick assaults on March 5 after several teen girls came forward, with Flores Ortiz turning himself in two days later after an arrest warrant was issued.

He was initially charged in nine groping incidents at the school, with four more charges later tacked on as more girls came forward to report similar assaults.

He was charged as an adult but was tried in juvenile court because of his and the victims’ ages — and was found guilty of nine misdemeanor counts, not guilty of three others and had the final charge dismissed.

“I think what is really important is this is not going to go away for my client,” Demetrios Pikrallidas, the attorney for one victim, told WJLA-TV News. “This happened, it’s gotten a lot of attention.

“It’s the vulnerability and the fact that she was touched in a school setting and that shouldn’t of happened,” the lawyer added. “It goes on beyond today. My job is to make sure it never happens again.”

FBI Offers $50,000 Reward for Capture of Joseph ‘Troubles’ Matos in 2021 Murder Case of Chicago Guardsman

0

CHICAGO — The search continues for Joseph Matos, an alleged member of the Milwaukee Kings street gang, as authorities seek to link him to the 2021 murder of Chrys Carvajal, a Chicago National Guardsman, according to the FBI.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

Chrys Carvajal was tragically shot and killed after attending a social gathering in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood of Chicago in 2021. His death has sparked a prolonged investigation as law enforcement officials strive to bring those responsible to justice.

Carvajal’s family recalls the initial arrest of Joseph ‘Troubles’ Matos shortly after the murder. However, at that time, the state’s attorney’s office determined that there was not enough evidence to proceed with formal charges against him.

Fast forward to 2024, and the legal landscape has shifted. The U.S. Attorney’s office has now filed charges against Matos, accusing him of racketeering and firearms-related offenses.

For further details, one can explore the recent developments in the case involving charges connected to the 2021 murder of the 19-year-old Chicago National Guardsman, Chrys Carvajal.

The FBI has raised their reward to $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Matos. They said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Carvajal was just days away from his 20th birthday when he was killed. He was a member of the Army National Guard, and Carvajal also hoped to go the academy and become a Chicago police officer.

“That was one of his hopes and dreams. He loved this city,” Carvajal’s sister, Jennifer Ramirez, previously said.
