Hayden Panettiere’s Life-Threatening Battle Revealed in 911 Call

0

Newly released 911 audio captures the desperate efforts to save Hayden Panettiere after she suffered a fatal overdose.

Panettiere died at age 36 on August 16 at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, after suffering the “toxic effects” of multiple substances, including fentanyl. Her death was ruled accidental.

Her on-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach were at the property when she was pronounced dead.

The audio, obtained by CBS on Wednesday, begins with Zach exclaiming ‘oh God, oh my God!’ as he waits to speak with a dispatcher.

Zach told the dispatcher, “I walked in after church to my brother and his girlfriend’s apartment and she’s unconscious.” He said Brian eventually woke up, but Panettiere remained unresponsive.

Zach also reported that Panettiere was not breathing. When the dispatcher asked whether he had access to a defibrillator, he questioned whether the apartment complex would have such lifesaving equipment.

The dispatcher instructed Zach and Brian to “start CPR” as someone could be heard shouting in the background.

Zach was told to place his phone on speaker so the dispatcher could guide them. The brothers were instructed to give mouth-to-mouth breaths and perform chest compressions.

The urgency of the call intensified as the dispatcher told the brothers to place Panettiere “flat on her back” and remove anything beneath her head.

When the dispatcher briefly paused, one of the brothers cried out, “What do we do?” before the CPR instructions resumed.

“Oh my God! I know how to do this! How many times?” one of the brothers asked during the resuscitation attempt. A voice could then be heard urging, “Come on!”

The call concluded when emergency responders arrived and took over the ultimately unsuccessful efforts to revive Panettiere.

Panettiere had been staying with the Hickerson brothers at an Airbnb property.

In August, detectives confirmed to the Daily Mail that officers had responded to a 911 call from an “acquaintance” who reported that Panettiere was “unresponsive.”

Narcan, a nasal spray designed to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, was reportedly found on a mattress in the loft apartment, according to TMZ. The 911 recording does not indicate that Narcan was administered during the call.

According to a Greenville Police Department incident report, Zach told investigators that Brian had been sleeping in another room when Zach arrived and found Panettiere unresponsive in a chair.

Zach said Brian administered Narcan, the medication used to counter opioid overdoses, while the brothers performed CPR and spoke with 911 dispatchers.

The audio, begins with Zach (R) exclaiming 'oh God, oh my God!' as he waits to speak with a dispatcher. Zach says, 'I walked in after church to my brother and his girlfriend's apartment and she's unconscious.' He adds that Brian woke up but Panettiere did not.

Panettiere is survived by Kaya, whom she welcomed during her nine-year romance with ex-fiance Wladimir Klitschko, 50.

In 2018, Panettiere signed full custody of her daughter, Kaya, to her ex amid her battle with postpartum depression and addiction and Wladimir moved the toddler to his native Ukraine.

Panettiere began acting as a child, appearing in soap operas, then gained wider recognition for her role in the 2000 sports drama Remember the Titans with Denzel Washington, and as the voice of Dot in Pixar’s 1998 film A Bug’s Life.

Panettiere later found fame playing cheerleader Claire Bennet in the superhero drama Heroes before starring as country singer Juliette Barnes for six seasons on Nashville.

She earned two Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress on the show, while her singing produced 11 entries on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

Panettiere’s film credits include 2006’s Bring It On: All or Nothing, the comedy-drama film Raising Helen, and appearances in Scream 4 and Scream VI as Kirby Reed.

NYPD Union Honors New York Post for Excellence in Police Reporting

0

The NYPD Detectives’ Endowment Association honored The Post at a breakfast ceremony in the Bronx on Wednesday, recognizing the newspaper’s excellence in covering policing and public safety across New York City.

“That’s our paper, right?” DEA President Scott Munro told attendees gathered in Throggs Neck. “That’s the paper we look at and the paper we rely on to get our information out. We want to honor them today.”

Munro praised The Post’s work with law enforcement, saying the newspaper has helped highlight the challenges facing detectives, including the department’s staffing losses and the need for stronger incentives to retain officers. “For the last two years, since this board took over, we’ve done a lot of great things out there, getting information out with their help,” he said. “It’s a story about losing detectives and getting enhancements for people to stay on this job.”

The union leader credited The Post with comprehensive coverage of crime in all five boroughs, as well as the pressures confronting New York’s Finest amid staffing shortages, administrative hurdles and changes to the state’s criminal justice laws.

“I know it’s our paper too, because you don’t have to pay for it online,” Munro added, drawing laughter from the crowd. “Cops won’t pay for it. You’ve got to pay for the Daily News and all the other pages, and of course The Times.”

Members of The Post’s police bureau attended the event alongside Editor-in-Chief Keith Poole, who accepted the award on behalf of the newspaper. Poole was recognized as a driving force behind The Post’s police and crime coverage in the city and beyond.

“Thank you, Scott, and thank you to the DEA for representing the interests of the detectives who keep this city safe,” Poole said. “You and your members not only have to deal with criminals, but also with an increasing number of loud voices and lawmakers advancing criminal justice policies that many believe make your work harder and more dangerous.”

Poole said he was accepting the honor on behalf of The Post, particularly its crime team, and called on the audience to applaud its members. “I often joke that they succeed not because of me, but in spite of me,” he said. “But without their tireless work, the story of your sacrifice, dedication, professionalism and the challenges you face would never be told as powerfully.”

The DEA is one of the largest unions representing NYPD officers and command staff. The Police Benevolent Association represents the department’s largest membership.

Reality Star MacKayla “Kash” Paige’s Sister Arrested in Shooting Death

The sister of reality TV personality MacKayla “Kash” Paige has been arrested in connection with Paige’s fatal shooting in Oakland, California.

Vernika Dunbar, 38, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon following the early-morning shooting in downtown Oakland on Oct. 11, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Oxygen.

In a probable cause statement obtained by Oxygen, Dunbar told police that she, Paige and two other women were in the 270 block of 14th Street when a “verbal and physical altercation” broke out.

Dunbar said the confrontation escalated between Paige and an unidentified Black woman. She told investigators that she attempted to “protect and assist” her sister by taking a gun from one of the other women. According to the report, Dunbar then allegedly tried to “strike” Paige’s alleged attacker with the weapon, but it discharged and hit Paige.

Oakland police arrived at approximately 1:35 a.m. and found Paige with a gunshot wound to the head. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police detained all three women involved in the altercation at the scene and brought them in for questioning.

Investigators also located surveillance video from the area that appeared to support Dunbar’s account of the shooting, according to the probable cause statement.

Dunbar also faces charges for carrying a loaded firearm in public and brandishing a firearm in public. Jail records reviewed by Oxygen show that she was booked into Santa Rita Jail at 2:40 a.m. on Oct. 11.

She remains in custody without bail.

It remains unclear whether Dunbar has hired an attorney.

Paige, who appeared on RoomH8z, Real West Coast Baddies and Young & Reckless—had shared moments from her night out on Instagram Stories just hours before her death, KTVU reported.

“She wanted to be famous so bad,” Paige’s cousin, Nicky Clayton, told the outlet. “She still had morals, don’t get me wrong. She wanted to be a reality star.”

Mystery Woman Sought After American Found Dead in Costa Rica

Authorities in Costa Rica are looking for a woman wanted for questioning in a suspected homicide after an American man was found dead in late September.

Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, the country’s equivalent of the FBI, is appealing to the public for help identifying the woman. The request follows the discovery of an American citizen, identified as “Fleming,” who was found dead Sept. 27 inside a condominium near the beach.

According to investigators, the 74-year-old man entered a condominium in Playas del Coco at about 4:50 p.m. The coastal town is located in Guanacaste, a popular tourist region along Costa Rica’s northern Pacific shore. Authorities believe the woman was seen leaving the property without him.

Officials later found the victim’s body. Investigators said he had suffered head trauma that was likely inflicted with blunt-force objects.

Police have not released the woman’s identity. They described her as having a fair complexion, a slender frame and black hair, with a height of roughly 1.60 meters, or about 5 feet 3 inches.

Father Avoids Jail After Speeding Sports Car Kills Mother

0

A businessman who lost control of his Maserati in torrential rain and struck a mother-of-two sitting in a roadside lay-by has avoided a prison sentence.

Ronald Dowling, 66, was travelling at 76mph along the A4042 in Pontypool, Gwent, when he hit Sharon Berry, 54, in October 2023.

The father-of-five had overtaken another vehicle in what were described as “terrible” conditions before his £70,000 sports car aquaplaned. The crash also left both of his passengers seriously injured.

Dowling’s Maserati Ghibli skidded across the waterlogged road and smashed into Mrs Berry’s Audi, where she had been waiting for the “biblical downpour” to pass. She died from her injuries three months later.

Dowling’s wife, Kim, a grandmother-of-ten, suffered devastating injuries and now needs a wheelchair. His other passenger, Jane Beedell, was placed in an induced coma after sustaining serious injuries.

At court this week, Dowling admitted responsibility for Mrs Berry’s death but was spared an immediate custodial sentence.

He received a 27-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and must complete 250 hours of unpaid work. He was also disqualified from driving for four years and ordered to pay £1,630 in costs.

Passing sentence, Judge Celia Hughes said: “Sharon Berry was simply sitting in her car by the roadside that day. Her death was completely senseless in every aspect of the word.”

The judge added: “No sentence I can pass can bring Mrs Berry back or lessen the pain experienced by her family and friends.”

The court heard that Dowling had been able to buy the Maserati through the success of his business, which installed specialist flooring in shopping centres and stadiums across Britain.

Since the collision, he has become his wife’s full-time carer. Kim Dowling required several operations after suffering a fractured neck and punctured lung.

Dowling had been driving his friend Jane Beedell to a hospital appointment when the crash happened. She suffered numerous injuries, including fractures to her neck and back and a brain haemorrhage.

In a victim impact statement, Ms Beedell said she now depends on care and was forced to leave her Civil Service career after 48 years because of the lasting effects of her injuries.

Mrs Berry’s family said she had been looking forward to becoming a grandmother when she died and remembered her as someone who was “full of love and laughter”.

Her son Luke said: “There are countless times when I have picked up my phone wanting to call my mum, whether to share good news, ask her advice or simply hear her voice, then the reality hits that she is no longer there and the loss feels as painful as ever.”

Lorraine Ashton, Mrs Berry’s sister, described the mother-of-two’s time in hospital as a period of “hope, fear and uncertainty”.

She said: “We desperately wanted her to recover but she never came home. Memories of those weeks will stay with me forever.

“The pain of losing her is something I carry with me every day. Her death has affected every part of my life. There will always be an empty space, an empty place, where Sharon should be.”

Dowling, from Caerphilly, is said to suffer with PTSD, anxiety and sleep problems due to the effects of the crash and is now the carer for his wife.

He admitted causing death by careless driving and two charges of causing serious injury by careless driving at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.

David Whittaker, defending, said: ‘His remorse is genuine. He has not suffered in the way the families of Jane Beedell and Sharon Berry’s have but every time he looks at his wife, every day, he is reminded of what he did.’

Ms Hughes, the judge, added: ‘In the seconds before the impact you were speeding at over 70 miles per hour for three seconds before the impact with the parked car.

‘You were doing 50mph at the impact after aquaplaning in standing water on the dual carriageway following several downpours of biblical proportions that day.

‘Your careless driving, speeding in terrible road conditions has had devastating consequences for all the people who have attended court today and no doubt more widely too.

‘The consequences of your behaviour will, and frankly should, live with you forever.’

Russell Brand Faces Court Allegations of Rape and Sexual Assault

0

Russell Brand was portrayed in court as a ruthless alleged sexual predator with a “voracious” appetite for sex, who pursued an ambition to sleep with 5,000 women, jurors were told today.

Prosecutors described the comedian and actor as a calculated, manipulative alleged rapist who spent a decade assaulting women and viewing them as a way to fulfil what they called his “insatiable desire”.

Brand, 51, denies three rape charges, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault involving six women between 1999 and 2009.

At the opening of the high-profile trial at Southwark Crown Court in London, jurors heard that the “child-like” television star allegedly used comedy and charm to draw women in. He was said to perform silly walks, likened to Basil Fawlty, before allegedly attacking his victims “like an animal”.

The court heard that Brand, a married father of two, regularly boasted about his sexual success, describing himself as an “expert pick-up artist”, a womaniser and a ladies’ man. Prosecutors said he spoke of wanting to “bed 5,000 women in my lifetime” and claimed: “All you have to do is tell them what they need to hear.”

Riel Karmy-Jones KC, prosecuting, told jurors that Brand would mock women who rejected him, suggesting they were being a “spoilsport” by refusing his advances.

She said: “The defendant was not deterred. His desire for some form of sexual contact was indiscriminate and voracious.

“He could be kind when he chose, funny, undoubtedly charming and likeable whenever he wanted something in return.

In court, the comedian and actor was on Wednesday described as a 'calculated and manipulative' rapist

The comedian and actor was described in court as a “calculated and manipulative” alleged rapist

“But he was also demanding and entitled, a flirt with an enormous sexual appetite, and childlike in expecting every desire to be satisfied.

“He was ruthless, calculated and manipulative, and the prosecution says he was a sexual predator.”

Jurors heard that as Brand’s acting career advanced and he became a Hollywood star, his celebrity status allegedly allowed him to carry out sexual attacks openly. One woman’s complaint was reportedly dismissed by television executives.

Friends allegedly described Brand as “rampant in his desire to score sex”, with what prosecutors characterised as an “insatiable desire” to get what he wanted from whoever he wanted, treating women “as if they were nothing”.

The first alleged incident is said to have taken place in 1999, involving a woman attending the Labour Party conference in Bournemouth.

Prosecutors allege that Brand took the woman to a hotel room after meeting her at a show where he had been performing.

The woman was reportedly surprised to discover Brand partly undressed and “prancing around the room”, performing silly walks compared in court to an ostrich and Basil Fawlty.

Brand allegedly told her: “It’s OK, it’s just how I am, don’t worry. I’m mostly naked at home,” before asking her to take photographs of him posing topless, the court heard.

Brand, pictured outside court on Wednesday, denies three rape charges, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault

Ms Karmy-Jones said Brand pushed the woman onto the bed and raped her.

The prosecutor said: ‘She remembers the weight of him on top of her, she couldn’t move, and was finding it hard to breathe, but recalls trying not to let him kiss her, and saying ‘no’.

‘She was scared. He groped her, was touching her, he grabbed her breasts, he was trying to kiss her, he was putting his fingers in her mouth and doing things with his tongue that were horrible, lizard-like.’

Afterwards, Brand is alleged to have made excuses for how quick things had been before claiming he had to get back to his mother, leaving the victim crying in shock.

Brand’s former friend Mark Pinheiro told jurors that the comedian had rushed to leave the area, ‘cowering’ in the back seat of a car when he heard police sirens.

Later, the defendant allegedly told Mr Pinheiro: ‘I think I may have gone a bit too far.’

Two years later, a ‘desperate wild-eyed’ Brand is accused of trying to drag an MTV worker into a toilet cubicle after she complimented him on his t-shirt.

In 2004 he is alleged to have orally raped a woman at a bar after groping her within minutes of them meeting during a birthday party.

The former Big Brother presenter is said to have told the woman, ‘Oh come on don’t be a spoilsport’ when she protested to him, ‘I don’t want to do this.’

Brand is accused of carrying out a fourth attack on a woman at a radio station around 2004.

The court heard he grabbed the victim in her 20s, pushed her up against a wall and kissed her ‘sloppily and aggressively’, grabbing the woman’s breasts and buttocks during a ‘rough, fast and frenzied’ assault.

When he was pushed off, Brand sniggered ‘like it was a joke’, jurors heard.

The prosecutor said: ‘These women meant nothing to him.’

A fifth victim met Brand backstage following a Hammersmith Apollo gig in 2009 after he allegedly told the audience: ‘You probably can have sex with me… My age range is from 16 to death.’

The starstruck fan said she was selected to take part in a ‘threesome’ from a queue of women.

The following day, the 21-year-old woman was invited to the home of Brand, who was then 33.

He allegedly anally raped her, shoving her face into a pillow as she begged him to stop before ordering her to ‘clean up the mess you have made’.

The traumatised woman later received an apology by text after she told Brand: ‘You treated me like an animal,’ the court heard.

The final alleged victim, a Channel 4 worker, claims she was sexually assaulted in 2009 after being told by his entourage to give Brand a massage.

Mr Pinheiro told jurors that Brand had ‘boasted’ of wanting to sleep with 5,000 women and shared his tips for ‘pulling girls’.

During a preview of Brand’s 2013 comedy show Messiah Complex, Brand allegedly told him: ‘What you are about to see is some real rock and roll s***.’

The star is then said to have selected girls lined up against a wall, taking each to the toilets for 10 minutes.

The prosecutor said: ‘His MO [modus operandi] was varied. Sometimes he might tell women what they wanted to hear, sometimes he might have appeared interested in their cause, sometimes he might even have made sexual advances within minutes of meeting them, but every time he had identified his target, he was intent on trying to fulfil his sexual desire.’

One friend, Andrew Dobson, said simply: ‘Women and sex were a goal and an obsession.’

The six alleged victims only came forward in 2025 after claims of sexual misconduct were reported in a newspaper and TV documentary.

During interviews, Brand told police that all his sexual contact was consensual.

He said he could not recall his accusers and claimed they had ‘reimagined’ the encounters.

Today, Brand, of Hambleden, Buckinghamshire, sat in the dock dressed in a black suit and tightly clutching a silver cross in his right hand. He showed no emotion as the details of the charges were read out.

The trial continues.

Prosecutors: NYPD Officer Stabbed 10 Times by Migrants in U.S. Illegally Chased Suspects Despite Injuries

0

An off-duty NYPD detective was stabbed 10 times by two men accused of being in the country illegally, prosecutors said Wednesday. Despite telling them repeatedly that he was a police officer, Detective Jose Mercedes allegedly chased the pair for two blocks without shoes before his injuries and blood loss forced him to stop.

The details emerged during the Bronx court arraignment of D’Angelo Caraballo and Sneinder Mejia, who face charges stemming from the Oct. 2 attack. Both defendants were ordered held without bail on attempted murder-related charges.

Bronx Assistant District Attorney Paul Irace said Mejia repeatedly stabbed Mercedes as the detective tried to take him into custody. “He used his training to stop this from happening,” Irace told the court.

According to the prosecutor, Mercedes identified himself as an NYPD officer more than six times during the confrontation.

Irace said the injured detective pursued the suspects as they escaped on a moped, continuing until severe blood loss left him too weak to go on.

More than two weeks after the assault, Mercedes still could not use his left hand and was recovering from surgery, Irace told Judge Alvin Yearwood.

About six NYPD detectives attended the hearing in support of their colleague.

The confrontation began as Mercedes unloaded belongings from his vehicle. Prosecutors said the two suspects approached on a two-wheeled vehicle and demanded his chain, leading to a physical struggle with the 10-year NYPD veteran.

“I almost died,” Mercedes said at a news conference earlier this week. He said he told the men in both English and Spanish that he was a police officer, but they ignored his warnings.

Caraballo and Mejia fled after the stabbing. Authorities later arrested them in Massachusetts. Officials said both men are from the Dominican Republic and were in the United States unlawfully.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials did not immediately respond to a request for details about the defendants’ current immigration status.

Mejia, who prosecutors identify as the alleged stabber, faces first- and second-degree attempted murder charges involving a police officer. Caraballo was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer.
