North Korea Test Fires Ballistic Missile Amid US-South Korea Military Exercise Preparations

0

In a move that continues to rattle international waters, North Korea has fired yet another ballistic missile, as confirmed on Tuesday. This marks the nation’s second missile test in just under a week’s time.

The announcement of this latest development was made by Japan’s prime minister’s office. As of now, specifics concerning the missile’s path, its flight range, and its landing site remain undisclosed.

In response, the United States military has actively begun tracking the missile’s launch while engaging in consultations with allied nations and partners across the region.

The U.S. Pacific Command issued a statement acknowledging awareness of the missile launch, emphasizing ongoing collaborations with allied countries. “Our initial assessments suggest these incidents do not pose any immediate threat to US personnel, US territory, or our allies,” the statement noted. “The United States continues to uphold its commitment to defend both the US homeland and our regional allies.”

The latest launch comes less than a week after North Korea test-fired a short-range ballistic missile from its eastern Wonsan area on Aug. 5.

That missile landed in waters off North Korea’s east coast and did not reach Japanese territory, Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said following the launch.

Koizumi said North Korea’s repeated missile launches pose a threat to Japan and the region, and Tokyo lodged a protest with Pyongyang through their embassies in Beijing.

South Korea’s military bolstered its surveillance posture and coordinated with the U.S. and Japan following the Aug. 5 launch, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

South Korea’s presidential national security council called that launch “a provocation” that violated U.N. Security Council resolutions and urged North Korea to stop its missile activity.

The launches come ahead of annual joint military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea, which are typically held during the second half of August.

“This annual exercise aims to build understanding between Combined Forces Command, United States Forces Korea, the United Nations Command, and ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), ROK government agency, ensuring their ability to fortify the combined defense posture and enhance Alliance response capabilities against a spectrum of security threats,” United States Forces Korea has said of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises.

“It will feature live, virtual, constructive and field-based training, engaging personnel from the various military services,” it added.

U.S. and South Korean officials have said the training is defensive in nature, while North Korea has characterized the exercises as preparation for an invasion and has often responded to military drills with missile tests.

The Aug. 5 test was North Korea’s first ballistic missile launch since late June, when it tested a tactical ballistic missile carrying what state media described as a “special mission” warhead along with other weapons.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said following those tests that his military needed to bolster its “deadly and destructive offensive posture.”

Comprehensive John Stewart Guide: Everything to Know Before Watching Lanterns

0

In an exciting development for DC Universe fans, “Lanterns” is set to showcase John Stewart (played by Aaron Pierre) as the newest live-action Green Lantern. However, this isn’t the John Stewart that’s known for being at the zenith of his powers. Teasers, like the trailer shown at Comic-Con, have revealed Stewart as an apprentice under the tutelage of Hal Jordan (portrayed by Kyle Chandler). Jordan, known for his own Green Lantern prestige, seems less than thrilled with mentoring the up-and-coming Stewart. For those unfamiliar with Stewart’s comic book origins and his potential growth throughout “Lanterns” and future DCU endeavors, checkout Looper’s video above for a comprehensive overview.

Partnering John Stewart with Hal Jordan is a noteworthy decision, given Jordan’s iconic status within the DC Comics realm. Stewart wasn’t the first Green Lantern to light up the page, but his debut was groundbreaking, primarily due to his role as a prominent Black superhero. His narrative depth and intensity set him apart, offering a stark contrast to the Lanterns who came before him.

John Stewart will usher in a more serious era for Green Lanterns

Portrayals of Green Lanterns in film and television have had a tumultuous journey. The 2011 film, led by Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, is notorious for its shortcomings. Contrastingly, Nathan Fillion found better success with his comedic take on Guy Gardner, introduced in “Superman.” While Gardner’s portrayal showcased the formidable capabilities of a Green Lantern’s power ring, it leaned heavily into humor, missing the mark for showcasing the Lanterns’ gravitas.

The DCU’s choice to spotlight a more earnest facet of the Green Lantern Corps is timely and necessary. Their legends are steeped in conflict, formidable challenges, and dramatic lore that often gets overshadowed by vibrant alien aesthetics and the grandiose space opera vibe typical of their tales. It’s about time the franchise dives into the serious and weighty narrative that the Green Lanterns truly embody.

Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King set out to present them in a far more serious light with HBO’s “Lanterns,” and honestly? John Stewart, who you can learn more about in Looper’s video above, is the perfect Lantern for that.

Kellan Lutz Explains Move from Hollywood to Tennessee Bliss

0

This week, Kellan Lutz revealed that he swapped California’s sunny skies for Tennessee’s tranquil ambiance three years ago, a decision influenced by the onset of the pandemic.

“I truly adore California,” Lutz confessed during an episode of “Inside of You” hosted by Michael Rosenbaum. He further elaborated, “However, the move to Tennessee became inevitable when we were expecting our second child.”

Famous for his role in “Twilight,” Lutz and his family relocated from Orange County. Meanwhile, his wife, Brittany Lutz, harbors hopes of possibly moving back or at least splitting their time between both coasts.

Brittany, an Orange County native, cherishes her roots there. “Her family is incredible,” Lutz shared. “However, in the wake of COVID-19, many people decided to leave California. Job losses prompted a desire for a more serene lifestyle.”

Ultimately, her family opted to settle in Tennessee, which influenced Lutz’s decision to join them. He noted that having her family nearby was crucial as he often travels for work, leaving her with the children in need of a robust support network.

“And one of the kids got sick. She felt really out of control as far as not being able to bring both kids there or just kind of helpless. So, she’s like, ‘Can we move?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, of course,” he explained.

He added that other men with kids in his life told him that new moms usually wanted to move to where their mom lives “just to help with the kids.”

“Then when they decided to move, I was like, “OK, well, we’re going to do it. We’re going to give it a couple years and we have, and it’s great. There’s a lot of great things about Tennessee, especially Franklin where we live.”

The family moved to Tennessee three years ago, but he acknowledged he doesn’t know how long they’ll stay.

“We got some land, got great Bible studies that we’re a part of, great churches, great community,” he said.

“There’s a lot of actors. I’ve gone to probably more movie premieres in Franklin, Tennessee, than I have in LA, you know, the last couple years since I lived there.”

Admittedly though, there are adjustments.

“Like we aren’t seasons people,” he said. “There’s tornadoes. My wife goes on red alert, especially when you have kids. And we do miss good sushi and good Mexican food.”

Rashford Ignites Manchester United’s Premier League Hopes with Return to Training

Marcus Rashford has stepped back onto the training grounds of Manchester United after a 19-month hiatus, pondering a future at the club and the fight for a first-team spot.

The England star has joined forces with Michael Carrick’s squad in Ireland as Manchester United gears up for the imminent season. In a bid to ease Rashford’s transition, the club chose to cancel a public training session, minimizing the spotlight on his return.

Despite resuming training, Rashford’s participation in the upcoming friendly against Leeds at Croke Park is doubtful. He is currently focused on regaining peak fitness following his post-World Cup respite.

Rashford wants to stay at United

Many speculated that the 28-year-old’s days at United were numbered after going out on loan last season. However, he now seems determined to remain at Old Trafford and compete vigorously for his place.

Interest in the forward has come from several Premier League clubs, but with the transfer window nearing its end, no firm offers have been made.

Rashford is also understood to have no interest in moving to Turkey or Saudi Arabia, with the winger determined to continue playing at the highest level.

His preference could leave United facing a decision over whether to reintegrate him into the squad or pursue a permanent transfer.

Rashford last trained with United in January 2025 before joining Aston Villa on a six-month loan. He subsequently spent time away from his boyhood club as his future under the previous regime remained uncertain.

New shirt number awaits Rashford

Rashford is reportedly set to return wearing the No. 14 shirt after previously wearing the No. 39, No. 19 and No. 10 during his Manchester United career.

The No. 10 shirt is now occupied by Matheus Cunha, who joined United last summer.

The forward still has two years remaining on his reported £325,000-a-week contract, meaning United face no immediate pressure to sell him.

With Carrick now overseeing the squad, Rashford has an opportunity to rebuild his position at United and potentially force his way back into the club’s plans.

Opposition Pledges to Reduce Migration Amid Non-Disclosure of Specific Targets

0

A key member of the Coalition has hesitated to detail his party’s strategy to reduce migration numbers, even as a formal declaration is anticipated later on Wednesday.

Andrew Bragg, who is the Opposition spokesperson for housing, plans to address the National Press Club on Wednesday. In his speech, he will advocate for nearly halving the current net overseas migration levels to better align with the supply of new housing.

The Treasury’s forecasting, revealed in the May budget, indicates that net overseas migration is projected to decrease from 301,000 to 225,000 by 2030.

However, Bragg aims to push for average annual net overseas migration to be around 180,000, catering to the current deficiency in housing availability.

“Reducing net overseas migration to this extent is feasible and consistent with past reductions we’ve successfully managed,” Bragg intends to state.

“Lifting migration standards, and analysing them carefully each year, is crucial to ensure integrity and public trust in our migration settings.”

But his colleague, Opposition treasury spokesperson Tim Wilson, backed away from confirming the number just hours before the speech.

Wilson was pressed on the topic during a News24 interview, in which he said: “I don’t think you should bank that at all (the 180,000 figure). Let’s just wait and see, firstly, what Senator Bragg’s saying in his speech”.

“We haven’t made an announcement about where we’re going to be going into the next election, but our focus is actually about what we need to do to invest in the long-term growth and success of our country,” he said.

Tim Wilson, in front of a blurred background, speaking.

Building codes will also come under fire during the speech.

“It is now illegal to build a cheap house in Australia,” Bragg will say.

The centrepiece of Bragg’s speech will be a commitment to replace the National Construction Code with a new 80-page “Basic Australian Standard”.

The codes set minimum requirements for the safety, health, amenity, accessibility, and sustainability of certain buildings, as detailed in over 2,000 pages.

The Coalition’s new standards will focus on cost-effective structural, fire safety and health-related building standards.

“Anything else like mandatory ramps, flattened shower flooring or reinforced walls would be optional extras,” Bragg will say.

“The house won’t be gold-plated but it won’t fall apart. It will be safe.”

Labor announced it would freeze the National Construction Code following its productivity roundtable in mid-2026.

Housing Minister Clare O’Neil brushed off calls from the Coalition to cut the construction standards to 200 pages earlier in 2026.

“I’ve talked to builders about that, they laugh their heads off. That is absolutely ridiculous,” O’Neil told the National Press Club in May.

The government is not far off presenting a final plan to the building minister later this year to streamline the code, Treasurer Jim Chalmers told ABC Radio National on Wednesday.

Bragg has also called for the creation of a federal pattern book of model homes that could receive automatic approval from the states and territories.

Firm Up Belly Pooch Fast: 6-Minute Wall Routine Secrets

0

No more crunches! Discover a revolutionary 6-minute wall workout designed to tighten your belly, especially beneficial for those over 60 years old.

>

Crunches might be your go-to, but did you know they can be taxing on your body, particularly after you hit 60? The Mayo Clinic highlights that the repetitive motion of crunches often leads to lower back strain. It’s a hard lesson many learn, realizing their efforts lead to aches rather than the toned abs they desire, prompting them to ditch these classic but harsh core exercises.

Fortunately, there’s a gentler alternative that involves using a wall instead of a mat, which minimizes spinal strain. Innovative research reveals that wall-supported exercises enable you to hold your core muscles isometrically. Unlike traditional crunches, this method maintains tension without continuous bending, protecting your spine while still giving your midsection a comprehensive workout.

Seeking expert insight, we connected with James Brady, CPT, a knowledgeable personal trainer at OriGym. He has crafted a six-minute routine leveraging these principles. Brady advises, “Perform each exercise for 45 seconds, then rest for 15 seconds before moving to the next move.” This concise routine is excellent for those over 60, offering comprehensive core strengthening with minimal spinal impact compared to typical crunches.

Wall Plank

The wall plank is one of the safest ways to build core strength, especially if getting down on the floor feels challenging or uncomfortable. Bracing your body against a wall allows you to engage your ab muscles without any strain on your wrists, neck, or lower back.

How to do it:

  1. Stand facing a wall and place your forearms against it at shoulder height.
  2. Step your feet back until your body forms a straight line from head to toe.
  3. Keep your neck neutral and your gaze straight ahead at the wall.
  4. Flex your core muscles.
  5. Squeeze your glutes to lock in the position.
  6. Make sure your hips don’t sag.
  7. Breathe steadily through your nose during the hold.
  8. Hold for 45 seconds and rest for 15 seconds before moving on to the next exercise.

Wall Marches

Wall marches build on the plank by adding movement, which forces your core to stabilize your body with every step. Lifting one knee at a time also challenges your balance and coordination, both of which tend to decline with age.

How to do it:

  1. Place both palms on the wall at shoulder height.
  2. Lean slightly forward and engage your core.
  3. Keep your torso still and your back straight.
  4. Lift one knee to hip height.
  5. Lower it back down with control.
  6. Repeat the movement on the opposite side.
  7. Continue alternating legs at a steady, controlled pace.
  8. Continue for 45 seconds, then rest for 15 seconds before moving on.

4 Daily Standing Exercises That Keep Your Back Pain-Free After 60

Wall Dead Bug Press

The wall dead bug press trains your midsection to remain stable while your limbs move, which is exactly the kind of control that protects your lower back during everyday tasks. “The goal is to keep your body stable rather than allowing it to sway from side to side,” explains Brady.

How to do it:

  1. Stand facing the wall with your palms pressed firmly against it.
  2. Maintain steady pressure through your hands throughout the exercise.
  3. Keep your core braced and your hips level.
  4. Slowly raise one knee until it reaches hip height.
  5. Lower it back down with control.
  6. Raise your opposite knee to hip height.
  7. Continue alternating sides without letting your torso sway.
  8. Perform for 45 seconds and rest for 15 seconds before moving on.

Wall Sit With a Core Brace

This classic wall exercise strengthens your legs while the added core brace keeps your core working throughout the hold. It’s a two-for-one move that builds lower-body endurance and core stability at the same time, with the wall taking the pressure off your knees.

How to do it:

  1. Stand with your back flat against the wall.
  2. Slide down until your knees are bent to roughly 90 degrees (or slightly higher if that’s more comfortable).
  3. Keep your weight even through both feet.
  4. Press your lower back gently into the wall.
  5. Flex your abs.
  6. Hold the position while breathing normally.
  7. Keep your knees tracking in line with your toes.
  8. Hold for 45 seconds, then rest for 15 seconds before moving on.

Anonymous Juror Protection Ordered Amid Escalating Threats in Luigi Mangione Case

0

NEW YORK — In an effort to safeguard the integrity of the trial, the judge handling the case of accused murderer Luigi Mangione has declared that jurors will remain anonymous. This decision comes as New York City prosecutors raise alarms over potential intimidation tactics by Mangione’s supporters during the imminent trial for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

“Significant pretrial publicity has saturated this case, capturing extensive media attention and sparking numerous public demonstrations at the courthouse,” Judge Gregory Carro articulated in a formal order released Tuesday afternoon.

Prosecutors have documented a series of threats, invasive harassment, and the dissemination of personal details targeting those connected to the case. This includes witnesses and others involved. Moreover, supporters of Mangione have been noted for making provocative and confrontational public statements near the courthouse. These individuals have further stated their intention to be present during jury selection, aiming to interact with potential jurors.

In response, Judge Carro decreed that the identities, including names and addresses, of the jurors will remain confidential, accessible only to the involved parties. This measure, requested by the prosecution, aims to shield the jurors from potential harassment or threats and to uphold Mangione’s right to an impartial trial.

“These measures do not close the courtroom, limit public access to the proceedings, or impose any prior restraint on press coverage,” he wrote. “They are limited protections directed solely at preventing harassment and preserving the integrity of the jury process in a high profile matter.”

In a previously sealed court filing opposing the motion, Mangione’s defense agreed that jurors’ addresses should remain out of the public sphere but argued that prosecutors had failed to show evidence of “an actual threat to the safety or integrity of the jury.”

“Rather than alleging that a pending, actual threat exists, as the statute requires, the People instead engage in speculation and conjecture about what could happen in the future,” defense attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo wrote on Aug. 5. “However, the statute explicitly requires a threat that exists, not one that might happen in the future. The reality, of course, is that no threat exists. In the absence of a factual showing that an actual threat exists, the statutory predicate has not been satisfied, and the application must be denied.”

The judge disagreed.

Prosecutors separately asked the judge in a Monday court filing to limit courtroom access and strictly enforce decorum rules at the high-profile trial, with jury selection scheduled to begin on Sept. 8.

“The media attention surrounding this case — and the efforts of some of defendant’s supporters both to intimidate witnesses and to interfere with the functioning of the jury — will place extraordinary pressure on witnesses and potential jurors alike,” Assistant District Attorney Joel Seidemann wrote in a letter to Carro Monday evening.

Carro, however, said the court was considering expanding media access, not shrinking it and ruled that there would be an overflow room to accommodate reporters who don’t fit in the main courtroom, telling prosecutors that it’s not his “first rodeo.” He said nothing about making the overflow audio only as prosecutors had sought and did not address a defense request to livestream the entire trial.

“There has never been a decision by this court to exclude or limit,” Carro said. “There have been discussions on expanding.”

And he said concerns from the defense that the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office was involved in picking which journalists could attend were without merit.

“I don’t want to hear anymore about this,” he told the sides.

Mangione’s attorneys spoke only briefly after an appearance in court Tuesday for what was expected to be the final conference before the trial begins.

“I think there should be two overflow rooms — I’ll take one,” said defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo.

The room is expected to accommodate more than 80 journalists, but Mangione’s team has been seeking greater access. Some of his public supporters have obtained city-issued press passes.

At least one pool reporter will have a guaranteed seat in the main courtroom during jury selection, Carro said. There will be less space during that stage of the trial because potential jurors will be taking up seats.

Carro also told the sides to identify any differences they have over the jury questionnaire before it is finalized.

Prosecutors had also claimed that court officers would face difficulty enforcing courthouse rules in an overflow room if one were made available to accommodate more reporters than can fit in the main courtroom.

“We are particularly concerned about the possibility that a spectator in an overflow courtroom will clandestinely record the proceedings and share any such recordings with others,” prosecutors wrote. “That concern will only be heightened if the overflow room includes a video feed as well as an audio feed.”

Seidemann recommended that if the judge does approve an overflow room, “it include only an audio feed so as to minimize the potential for witness intimidation and harassment.”

Carro warned that anyone who takes a phone out in the courtroom or overflow room would be removed.

Read the prosecution letter:

“The conventional wisdom is that the defense usually doesn’t want high-profile cases broadcast. It can put implicit pressure on jurors to return a guilty verdict,” Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor, told News Media last week.

But Mangione’s defense team is likely aware that the defendant has a sizable number of supporters and is aiming to leverage that, he said.

“There’s upwards of 10 to 20 percent of the people who have been surveyed who believe that even if he did it, it was justified,” Rahmani said. “And I think the defense knows this, and they know that more attention creates the possibility of jury nullification, or maybe even an acquittal.”

Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two from Minnesota, was walking to a business conference when surveillance video shows a man firing multiple bullets into his back on Dec. 4, 2024 outside a Manhattan hotel.

Police arrested Mangione days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Mangione’s legal team has requested a publicly televised trial, something that New York law doesn’t typically allow.

In June, Mangione’s defense team announced plans to assert a psychiatric defense in the state case — then withdrew it a day later.

Mangione has pleaded not guilty to eight state charges, including second-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison under New York law.
