Local Nonprofit Revives St. Petersburg Home Following 2024 Hurricanes

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A St. Petersburg resident is on the path to recovery after her home suffered extensive damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024.

Two years later, a team of dedicated volunteers is transforming her property with fresh paint, new landscaping, and much-needed repairs to restore her home to its former glory.

For Andrea Destowet, owning a home in St. Petersburg symbolized security and a sanctuary for her family. That sense of stability was shattered in 2024 when the devastating hurricanes wreaked havoc on her property.

“I stayed put during the hurricane; I don’t evacuate,” Destowet explained. “But the powerful winds tore off the shingles and my roof, allowing water to pour in and eventually causing my ceiling to collapse.”

After enduring months of uncertainty, Andrea received a lifeline when Rebuilding Together Greater Florida, with assistance from Progressive Insurance, stepped in to help rebuild her home.

“Back in February, we replaced some drywall and we replaced the floors,” said Lance Lee, Vice President of Operations for Rebuilding Together Greater Florida. “Her door frames were flooded; there was a lot of flood damage.”

Now today, volunteers are finishing the final phase, with exterior improvements designed to make the home safer and welcoming again.

“Where you live is where your peace is, and she deserves to feel peaceful after she’s been through with the storms,” said Lee.

“They have made my life so much easier,” Destowet said. “I’m looking forward to coming home and not looking at my house needing to be fixed and questioning when I am going to be able to get it done.”

Destowet said this is about more than the repairs. It’s about a new beginning.

Unraveling the Conclusion of ‘Outlander’ Season 8, Episode 7: The Fate of Baby Faith Fraser

Episode 7 of Outlander Season 8, aptly titled “Evidence of Things Not Seen,” delves into the concept of “faith,” a fitting theme for the revelations that unfold. Since the jaw-dropping finale of Season 7, fans have been left in suspense, speculating about the fate of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) daughter, Faith. Viewers have pondered whether she indeed survived and if she could be the true mother of Jane (Silvia Presente) and Fanny (Florrie Mae Wilkinson). At last, the latest episode provides some much-needed clarity.

**Spoiler Alert: Details from Outlander Season 8 Episode 7 “Evidence of Things Not Seen,” currently available on Starz, follow below**

In this episode, Young Ian (John Bell) reaches out to Jamie and Claire with news from Philadelphia. His visit to the brothel where Jane previously worked uncovered intriguing information. A writer had documented Jane’s trial and execution in a pamphlet, and Ian managed to locate this journalist. Through some convincing, Ian acquired the reporter’s comprehensive notes, which included an extraordinary tale Jane wished to relay to her sister Fanny about their mother’s past.

This narrative is brought to life through a flashback, featuring the return of Silvia Presente. As Jamie and Claire absorb this story, they piece together the puzzle, realizing they possess sufficient evidence to formally acknowledge Fanny as their granddaughter. But what truly befell Faith? And why does the sorrow of her demise cut even deeper? The episode uncovers the poignant history of Faith Fraser Pocock, leaving viewers with much to reflect upon.

So what exactly happened to Faith? And why is the tragedy of her death even more upsetting? Here’s what you need to know about Faith Fraser Pocock…

Outlander Season 8 Episode 7 Ending Explained: What Really Happened to Faith Fraser? Is Fanny Really Claire and Jamie’s Granddaughter?

In this week’s Outlander we learned that Jane and Fanny’s mother Faith told Jane a peculiar story when she was growing up. Apparently Faith was adopted and raised by a lacemaker in Paris. This lacemaker was given baby Faith to watch over by an apothecary who lived across the street. He told her to watch over the infant until he returned, but if he didn’t come back, the lacemaker needed to find the Lady Broch Turouch. When the apothecary never returned, the woman looked for this mysterious lady, but couldn’t find her.

According to Jane, her mother finally learned that the Lady of Broch Turouch was living in the mountains of North Carolina. The Pocock family was literally traveling to America to reunited with Claire and Jamie when pirates took over their ship, resulting in Faith falling overboard and Jane’s sexual assault and enslavement.

Jamie and Claire present Fanny with this information, explaining their connection to Master Raymond in Paris, who lived across the street from a lacemaker. While Fanny is initially overwhelmed, she eventually accepts Claire and Jamie as her grandparents. She even goes so far as to build a cairn for her “Grandda” to mourn fallen adopted son Fergus (Cesar Domboy).

However, even Fanny has one more question. Even if Claire sang the same song to Faith as a baby that Faith sang to her daughters, how did Faith possibly know the song after all that time? Even Fanny knows that newborns don’t exactly have that level of cognition.

The final scene in this week’s Outlander ties it all together…

How Did Faith Learn Claire’s “I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside” Song on Outlander?

The final scene in this week’s Outlander confirms Claire’s theory that Faith Pocock was really Faith Fraser. We literally see Master Raymond take baby Faith to the lacemaker, explaining she is the only person on earth he trusts to take care of the baby.

Master Raymond tells the lacemaker that “her father is in prison and her mother is very ill” and that “her name is Faith.”

After giving his plea to find Lady Broch Turouch if he doesn’t return, he adds that there’s a song that the baby’s mother sang to her.

Master Raymond then sings, “I do like to be beside the seaside,” and the lacemaker joins in, learning the song tout suite as the French would say.

So, yes, Master Raymond saved baby Faith from death and left her in the care of a Parisian lacemaker who had managed to learn an early 20th century bop with just one listen. She then sang that song to the baby, who grew up knowing it as the sole connection she had to her birth mother, the Lady of Broch Turouch. Faith then taught it to her daughters, which is how Fanny came to sing it in that church outside Monmouth, setting this whole storyline in motion!

There are only three episodes left in Outlander. The next episode of Outlander premieres on Friday, April 24 at 9 AM ET on Starz or at 8 PM on the Starz channel.

Mother Accused of Poisoning Daughters During Thanksgiving Celebration

Disturbing new revelations have surfaced in a North Carolina murder investigation involving a mother accused of poisoning her daughters during a Thanksgiving dinner last year.

Gudrun Casper-Leinenkugel, 53, faces charges of first-degree murder for the death of her 32-year-old daughter, Leela Livis, as confirmed by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

In addition to the murder charge, Casper-Leinenkugel is also facing two counts of attempted murder and three counts of illegally distributing prohibited food or beverages, as detailed in a January press release from the agency.

The victim, identified as the defendant’s daughter, reportedly died after consuming wine that had been tampered with, according to newly unsealed warrants obtained by Law&Crime.

Investigators reveal that the toxic substance involved was acetonitrile, a chemical known to metabolize into cyanide within hours of ingestion.

Both of the defendant’s daughters – and one of the daughter’s boyfriends – drank from the same acetonitrile-laced bottle of wine during the Thanksgiving dinner, police said. All three victims would go on to suffer flu-like symptoms later that night.

One of Casper-Leinenkugel’s daughters died the next day.

The other daughter, however, said she only had a few sips of the poisoned wine and her complications were relatively mild, police said. The surviving daughter’s boyfriend, on the other hand, had to be admitted to a nearby hospital for six days due to having a cyanide level more than five times the lethal limit, according to the warrants.

“[T]he defendant unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did knowingly distributed or otherwise caused to be placed in a position of human accessibility or ingestion a beverage which contained a poisonous chemical, acetonitrile, which might cause death or serious physical injury,” an arrest warrant reviewed by Law&Crime said. Acetonitrile is a chemical solvent used for a variety of purposes, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides and batteries.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, acetonitrile “forms cyanide in the body” and can result in “delayed toxicity.”

The defendant told investigators someone else living in her house purchased the poison, according to the affidavit. Investigators found a bottle of acetonitrile inside the residence.

Casper-Leinenkugel tried to pin the blame on an open bottle and said the wine was stored in a closet near other chemicals like rat poison, according to search warrant applications obtained by Law&Crime.

“[T]he bottle of wine was open when it was presented at the party,” one of the warrant applications reads. “[T]he open bottle was stored in a closet next to chemicals used in the barn.”

After the poisonings, Casper-Leinenkugel allegedly told the attending physician at the hospital where her daughter’s boyfriend was being treated: “The kids play back there as well and may have ‘got to it.’”

Another warrant application supports the idea the bottle of wine had been opened prior to the holiday party. The defendant’s surviving daughter told investigators “that when the bottle was presented to everyone, it was already open and appeared to have a small amount missing, possibly the amount of a tasting rather than a full glass.”

As investigators intensified their probe into the poisonings, authorities quickly linked Casper-Leinenkugel to a years-old cold case.

The defendant also stands accused of the October 2007 murder of Michael Schmidt, a man who lived in a camper on her property.

“This death was discovered by Gudrun, and she was also the last person to see the decedent alive when they had a few alcoholic drinks together,” a detective wrote in a warrant application.

Police believe acetonitrile was also the substance used to fatally poison the 42-year-old man who lived on the Schmidt Terrace property – the same property he transferred ownership of to Casper-Leinenkugel in 2006, according to Henderson County records.

At the time of Schmidt’s death, Casper-Leinenkugel told detectives she had last seen him “approximately two days prior and that she believed him to be a drug user and alcoholic and that he was coughing for a few days prior to his death,” according to a warrant application.

In 2008, Schmidt’s death was listed as due to “acute acetonitrile toxicity (probably huffing)” and categorized as accidental.

Only later, when a large number of emergency calls were placed regarding the defendant’s residence, law enforcement reinvestigated the death of the prior property owner.

Now, the local district attorney says Casper-Leinenkugel is tied to additional deaths that are currently under investigation.

In 2016, the defendant was the subject of a story on local news website Mountain Xpress about the opening of her restaurant, Patton Public House, in nearby Asheville. According to that story, Casper-Leinenkugel had opened “six restaurants and bars across the country.”

She is next slated to appear in court on April 30.

Coast Guard Launches Search for Missing Boat Crew After Typhoon Sinlaku Strikes

0

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — After Typhoon Sinlaku swept through the area, the U.S. Coast Guard has been actively searching for six individuals aboard a disabled boat off the coast of Guam. The vessel, a 145-foot (44-meter) dry cargo ship named the Mariana, is registered in the U.S.

On April 15, the crew of the Mariana reached out to the Coast Guard, reporting that they had lost the starboard engine and were in need of assistance, according to Petty Officer 3rd Class Avery Tibbets. To ensure safety, the Coast Guard initiated a communication schedule with the vessel, checking in every hour.

Unfortunately, contact with the Mariana was lost on the afternoon of April 16. In response, the Coast Guard dispatched an HC-130 Hercules aircraft to search for the crew of six. However, the mission faced challenges due to harsh winds, forcing the aircraft to return to Guam. Search operations were planned to resume at first light on Saturday, Tibbets noted.

The last reported location of the vessel was approximately 125 miles (200 kilometers) north-northwest of Saipan. The nationalities of the crew members remain unknown, leaving a gap in the narrative of the unfolding situation.

Earlier this week, Super Typhoon Sinlaku unleashed its force on the Northern Mariana Islands, resulting in significant damage to the islands of Tinian and Saipan, and causing flash flooding in Guam, home to several American military bases.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and several other federal agencies are ramping up their response to Typhoon Sinlaku as dangerous weather conditions ease and the islands’ shelter-in-place orders begin to lift, Robert Fenton, FEMA regional administrator for Region 9, which includes Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, said Friday.

Fenton said a slew of federal agencies are on the ground to support the local governments, including the Department of Defense, Environmental Protection Agency, Health and Human Services, and more.

The storm’s sheer size — with typhoon-force winds extending 275 miles (443 kilometers) from its center, according to the U.S. National Weather Service Guam — was unique, Fenton said, and meant island residents were subjected to roughly 48 hours of fierce winds, delaying responders’ ability to assess damage and help communities.

“It slows down our ability to respond to those needs, and I think it’s more physically and mentally impactful to those that have to go through that,” he said.

The scope of damage is still being assessed, but significant impacts to power and water systems are already evident, especially in the Northern Marianas.

“We think this will be a multimonth mission of emergency power,” Fenton said.

The U.S. Coast Guard is “working diligently” to reopen the Port of Guam and the rest of the ports in the area but did not have an exact timeline, Tibbets said, calling it one of their “highest priorities.”

As the Coast Guard continues its search for the missing boat, U.S. Air Force helicopters would be used to assess needs in some of the smaller, more remote and sparsely populated islands of the Northern Marianas, Fenton said.

Australians Reach Consensus on a Controversial Aspect of Harry and Meghan’s Tour

0

Exclusive Insight: As Prince Harry and Meghan wrap up their whirlwind tour of Australia, a key sentiment has emerged among Australians, according to an exclusive survey.

The prevailing opinion is that taxpayers should not have footed the bill for any part of the visit.

Although their trip was deemed private, some of the policing expenses still burdened the public purse, as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald.

In a survey conducted by nine.com.au, nearly 90% of 904 respondents expressed that such expenses should have been avoided.

“It’s almost obscene that the Australian taxpayer has to cover any costs for their visit, especially when many families are facing hardships,” one respondent shared with nine.com.au.

“They make more than enough money to cover their own expenses,” said another.

Only six per cent were on board with taxpayer money going towards the pair’s policing costs.

“Police are used to protect most high end celebrities, I don’t see why Meghan and Harry’s tour is any different,” one said.

This has been, at least in part, a money-making venture for the couple.

But most nine.com.au readers said they wouldn’t pay to see Harry or Meghan, both of whom had ticketed event appearances on their Australian agenda.

Harry was the keynote speaker at the InterEdge summit, where tickets were priced at up to $2400 per person.

He is not believed to have been paid for the appearance, the Press Association reported.

Meghan appeared at a women’s only retreat hosted by Her Best Life podcast yesterday, where tickets ranged from $2699 to $3199.

She was paid, but sources claim it was only a nominal fee.

Either way, only two per cent of nine.com.au readers said they’d be willing to pay to attend either event.

One per cent were undecided, while the other 97 per cent were firmly against it.

The story might have been different had Harry and Meghan not stepped down from their roles as senior working royals back in 2020.

More than half of nine.com.au readers are still in favour of using taxpayer money to fund official royal tours, like if the Prince and Princess of Wales came to Australia.

“William and Kate are still working royals, so on official business the tax payer should pay,” one person said.

Another added that royals like Harry and Meghan who have stood down from official duties should have to “pay their own way”.

Even so, close to 40 per cent were opposed to using taxpayer money for any royal visits and insisted all royals – regardless of status – should fund their own trips Down Under.

The nine.com.au poll, which runs once a fortnight, canvases the views of the Nine audience on 9Nation, which is an online community of our readers and viewers.

Dianna Russini Heroically Saves Senior and Dog in New Jersey Car Accident

0

Dianna Russini’s eventful week took an unexpected turn when she stepped into the role of a rescuer, reportedly saving an elderly man and his dog following a car accident in New Jersey on Wednesday.

As reported by Page Six, Russini, who had resigned from her position at The Athletic just a day earlier amid allegations of an affair with NFL coach Mike Vrabel, was driving directly behind the elderly man. The incident occurred when a 17-year-old driver in a Honda Civic made a turn onto a street in the suburban area of Wyckoff and collided with the man’s Jeep.

The impact of the crash caused the 73-year-old man’s 4×4 to overturn, trapping him and his dog inside the vehicle. That’s when Russini sprang into action.

Witnesses at the scene reportedly noted that the NFL reporter quickly reacted by enlisting the help of a tall man to lift her onto the Jeep, allowing her to access the door and assist in freeing the driver and his dog.

Police arrived on the scene shortly thereafter. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Wyckoff Police Department to gather more details about the incident.

It has been quite the week for Russini, who stepped away from her job at The Athletic after she was pictured hugging, lounging poolside and laughing with Vrabel at a $2,500-per-night getaway in Sedona, Arizona.

The pair, who are both married, have denied having an affair and instead downplayed what the images appeared to depict.

Yet on Tuesday it was announced that Russini has left The Athletic amid an investigation into the matter, with the under-fire writer hitting out at speculation that is ‘simply unmoored from the facts’ on her way out.

She said in a letter to Athletic Executive Editor Steven Ginsberg: ‘I do so [resign] not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.

‘I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published.’

‘This media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete,’ she added.

‘It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept.

‘Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now — before my current contract expires on June 30.’

Russini is not the only female reporter to lose her job in light of the scandal, nevertheless.

On Thursday another NFL writer, Crissy Froyd, was fired by USA Today for taking a brutal shot at Russini over her Athletic resignation this week.

In response to her resignation letter, Froyd – who covered the NFL and college football for USA Today SMG – kicked her counterpart while she’s down by commenting: ‘I’m sure you were told to submit this or that you’d get fired instead.

‘Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. We know who you really are and what you’ve been up to for years. It does so much detriment to women in sports who have done things the right way.’

Yet in light of her damning public criticism of Russini, USA Today confirmed in a statement on Thursday that Froyd’s contract has been terminated ‘effective immediately’.

‘Her recent statements do not reflect our commitment to professionalism or uphold our principles of ethical conduct,’ the statement added.

Froyd has reacted to her shock dismissal in an interview with TMZ , admitting it has left her ‘beyond distraught’.

‘I struggle to understand the positioning here after that was published, but that apparently I as an independent contractor cannot make my own statements on my own social media accounts.’

Celebrity MasterChef Star Fires Back at Troll with Empowering Response to Appearance Criticism

A star from Celebrity MasterChef has taken a stand against an online critic who disparaged her participation in the BBC One cooking competition. The critic described her appearance as ‘absolutely ludicrous’.

Ginger Johnson, renowned for her success on RuPaul’s Drag Race where she clinched the title in 2023, was a finalist on the cooking show. She responded to the spiteful comment through her social media, demonstrating her resilience against negativity.

Throughout her time in the MasterChef kitchen, Ginger, whose real name is Donald Marshall, embraced her drag persona, complete with a striking ginger wig and elaborate makeup. Her bold presence became a focal point of discussion among viewers.

Among the comments, one viewer chose to express disdain via social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The comment harshly criticized Ginger, stating, “Ginger, you’re not a ‘woman’; you look absolutely ludicrous,” while using the show’s hashtag to draw attention to their remark.

‘Ginger, you’re not a “woman” you look absolutely ludicrous,’ the nasty commenter penned, including the hashtag for the Celebrity MasterChef series.

Underneath the comment, Ginger hit back: ‘Thank you, sweetheart! “Ludicrous” is exactly what I’m aiming for. Have a lovely Christmas.’

Fans of the star were thrilled to see her clap back against the user, and flooded her with supportive messages telling her they ‘love her’.

‘Well you’re succeeding beyond expectations dear, well done,’ one wrote, as another chimed in: ‘There’s something really funny about adding a hashtag to a hate post…’

Ginger made it to the final of Celebrity MasterChef alongside writer Dawn O’Porter, and rugby star Alun Wyn Jones, beating Uma Jammesh, Ashley Cain, Chris Hughes and Michelle Heaton.

She shot to fame in 2023 when she won RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, and went on to co-present online breakfast show Wakey! and host her own BBC Three series, Ginger’s House the following year.

Ginger has also written children’s short stories Glamorous Gran and Other Tall Stories, which she has performed at the Southbank Centre.

Last night, the final three contestants of Celebrity MasterChef 2025 were revealed on Tuesday’s show after Alfie Boe bowed out of the competition.

The tenor, 52, was eliminated after failing to impress with a cake that tasted a bit ‘eggy’, leaving Dawn O’Porter, Alun Why Jones and Ginger Johnson to sail through to Friday’s grande finale.

After his exit, viewers took to X to reveal they were ‘gutted’ for Alfie as they wanted to see him go on through to the next round.

The show started with judges Grace Dent and John Torode welcoming the final four and telling them to cook a dish dedicated to someone special.

Alfie created a two-layer cake in tribute to his late father, who died 28 years ago.

One half of it was a nod to his father’s favourite cake, Yorkshire ginger Parkin and the other was a nod to his incredible career as a tenor as he made a Belgian Le Misérable cake topped with ginger and cinnamon poached apricots.

But the dish didn’t quite hit the mark with Grace, who told him: ‘The Le Mis part of it is undercooked and because of that, it tastes a bit of egg. But the Parkin is just incredible, it’s gingery and satisfying. Love it.’

Meanwhile, the judges were impressed with Dawn and said she showed her ‘very best’ after she made a kebab, which was in homage to the kebab she ate on the night she became her husband Chris O’Dowd’s girlfriend.

After the four lined up the judges announced Alfie would go home.

Reflecting on his exit, the singer said: ‘This has been quite precious. These moments in life that come about are really special. I’m happy to be going home as a Celebrity MasterChef finalist.’

Viewers were sad Alfie didn’t make it to through and wrote on X: ‘I’m gutted Alfie has gone. He’s done such good dishes (cook of the day three times) and it was great seeing him fight his nerves. He should still be there’.

The final three then headed straight to Lichfield in Staffordshire for their next assignment, the daunting Chef’s Table.

It was held at The Boat, a three-rosette restaurant led by chef patron Liam Dillon.

Alun, Dawn and Ginger each had to cook one of Liam’s modern British dishes for six chefs who are also at the top of their game: Lisa Goodwin-Allen, Sat Bains, Paul Ainsworth, Chet Sharma, David Taylor and Chantelle Nicholson.

After the round, no one left the competition.

John said: ‘All the lessons are over. It’s back to the MasterChef kitchen because there’s three cooks and only one that can be our winner.’

The Celebrity MasterChef 2025 Final takes place on Friday December 19, 2025 at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
