Explore the 1985 Nostalgia in ‘Stranger Things’ with New ‘Tales from ’85’ Spin-off

0

Following the buzz and mixed reactions surrounding the series finale of “Stranger Things,” the franchise is set to expand its universe by delving into untold stories from the past. “Stranger Things: Tales from ’85” offers fans a nostalgic journey, filling in the narrative gap between Seasons 2 and 3. This midquel revisits the early days in Hawkins, a time when the young protagonists faced less daunting monsters and life seemed closer to ordinary.

When will Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 be released?

Much like the feature-length series finale of “Stranger Things,” “Stranger Things: Tales from ’85” launched early in select movie theaters before hitting Netflix. Fans were be able to watch it in 34 AMC theaters across the country, plus Netflix House in Philadelphia and The Paris Theater in New York. The showings took take place on April 18 at 12 and 3 PM.

For those who missed out on seeing it on the big screen, the wait won’t be too much longer. The series drops on the streamer on April 23. As per usual, it will be released at 12:00 AM PST. The first two episodes will drop on the same day, and there’s no word as to how long each episode will be. Fans will have to keep their eyes on the clock to find out how much extra time they’re going to have with El and her friends.

Who is starring in Stranger Things: Tales from ’85?

Beware, “Stranger Things” fanatics: None of the show’s original cast will be returning for “Stranger Things: Tales from ’85.” Instead, an entirely different group of professional voice and live-action actors will be playing the people you know and love.

Brooklyn Davey Norstedt will be taking over the role of Eleven, alongside Luca Diaz as Mike Wheeler, Elisha Williams as Lucas Sinclair, Braxton Quinney as Dustin Henderson, Benjamin Plessala as Will Byers, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max Mayfield, Brett Gipson as Hopper, and Jeremy Jordan as Steve Harrington. There will be several new faces in town, with Janeane Garofalo playing an unnamed character and Odessa A’zion as tough punk kid Nikki Baxter, a newbie to the cast. As of press time there’s no word as to who will be playing Joyce Byers or any of the older teen characters.

What is Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 about?

As noted above, the show will be set between Season 2 and Season 3 — a season fans of “Stranger Things” believe gets better every time they rewatch it — during the winter of 1985, when a brand-new mystery will present itself to the party. Things have finally settled down after their travails in the darker, more horror-orientated Season 2, during which Eleven seemingly closed the gate between Hawkins Lab and the Upside Down. The kids have returned to the normalcy of childhood and the simple joys of playing D&D together. But evil lurks in the shadows, and under the snows of Hawkins. The party will have to join forces to put things to right once again, and save themselves — and Hawkins itself — from the terror of a new evil.

The gang will rely upon a brand-new addition to the crew named Nikki Baxter, who is pink haired and plays a barbarian in the gang’s D&D team. She will naturally represent muscle and toughness when they join forces, and it’s her job to beat back the evil creatures they’re about to face down. The rest of the plot’s details are under wraps.

Who will produce, direct, and write Stranger Things: Tales From ’85?

As always with all things “Stranger Things,” brothers Matt and Ross Duffer are listed as both executive producers and series creators. Dan Cohen, Hilary Leavitt, Shawn Levy, and Eric Robles share those duties. Leavitt represents Upside Down Pictures, while Levy is with 21 Laps. The animation company in charge of producing each episode is Flying Bark Production.

Phil Allora directed the first episode, and as of press time no other directors have been listed for the rest of the show’s run. Allora is an experienced animation director, with many Disney art department credits including “Lilo and Stitch” and “Brother Bear.” His animation directing career includes episodes of “The Cleveland Show,” “Turbo FAST,” and “DC Superhero Girls.”

The first episode was written by Jennifer Muro, who has written for animated TV shows for two decades. Her work can be heard in several Care Bear shows, but also 16 episodes of “Star Wars: Force of Destiny,” “Star Trek: Prodigy,” and “The Legend of Vox Machina.” She also created the Netflix animated science fiction show for kids, “The Last Kids on Earth.” As of press time, there’s no indication as to who will direct and who will write the rest of the Season 1 run.

Is there a trailer for Stranger Things: Tales from ’85?

Netflix released a trailer for “Stranger Things: Tales from ’85” on February 26. It shows a montage of familiar scenes — the local arcade, Hopper’s house, and a photo of El and Mike together at the Snow Ball. El covers up her tattoo and answers the door; Mike Wheeler is there. El goes out with him to play, but not before Hopper threatens Mike’s very life if anything happens to El while she’s outside with him.

We then see several scenes of the kids having fun in the wintertime, but there’s a bit of an edge to the peaceful feeling the trailer establishes. To the tune of the popular ’80s tune “Always Something There to Remind Me,” a snowstorm looms over Hawkins, while Max and Lucas’ romance grows stronger — and Mike plans a new campaign to take place during that aforementioned snowpocalypse. But an unidentified evil being can be seen tunneling under the drifts, and that means something bad is ready to make life a whole lot tougher for the party. Viewers quickly learn that a creature successfully escaped the Upside Down before Eleven used her superpowers to close the rift, and it mutates into a new kind of monster with a pumpkin for a head. Havoc and danger ensue.

Is Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 part of a larger universe?

As noted above, “Stranger Things: Tales from ’85” is a midquel to “Stranger Things,” which means it shows us a previously unseen adventure the party goes through between live-action outings. While the audience might know what happens to everyone after the events of “Tales from ’85,” what happens during the program remains a total mystery, and one that will likely enthrall viewers of the show with incidents they’ve never seen before.

Other ancillary spin-offs of the “Stranger Things” world include “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” a Broadway play that focuses on what the adult characters were doing years before the events of Season 1, including giving a lot of backstory to Henry Creel. One dumb thing fans couldn’t ignore about volume 2 of Season 5 was that much of the narrative focused on what happened in “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” The franchise also includes pop-up stores and escape rooms, comic books, live experiences, video games, and young adult novels. Basically, if teenagers like it, the “Stranger Things” universe has a product for them to enjoy.

Where can you watch Stranger Things?

Naturally, “Stranger Things” remains a Netflix exclusive — at least for the moment. The streamer recently announced that the show will be hitting practical media with a full-series box set release, which means those with the cash will be able to see it in the comfort of their own homes at any time. It will hit store shelves in July.

Otherwise, the only options fans currently have to see the show is to stream it from Netflix. It isn’t available as a set of individual episodes, nor is there any indication that the show will appear in syndication or in other formats. Of course, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” only exists as a Broadway play at the moment — though Netflix, too, seems poised to release a professionally filmed version of the show. The best bet for fans of the franchise, at least for now, remains a Netflix subscription.

Top 4 Daily Exercises to Combat Age-Related Strength Decline More Effectively Than Gym Machines for Those Over 60

0

For anyone over 60, the quest to maintain muscle strength is a common challenge, and as a seasoned personal trainer with four decades of experience, I’ve heard this concern time and again. As part of my role at TRAINFITNESS, I often advise clients on how to combat this issue effectively. One of the best solutions lies in bodyweight exercises, which are not only practical but also require no expensive gym memberships or equipment. Here are four exercises you can do right at home to regain functional strength.

The loss of muscle mass that accelerates with age is known as sarcopenia, which affects more than just muscle size. It significantly impacts the ability of muscles to produce force quickly, meaning our power output diminishes at about twice the rate of strength loss. This decline is why activities like standing up from a chair or quickly recovering from a stumble become increasingly difficult as we age.

Several factors contribute to this decline in muscle strength. Hormonal changes, including reduced levels of testosterone and growth hormone, play a significant role in muscle maintenance. The efficiency of the nervous system in recruiting muscle fibers also wanes, meaning that even if the muscle mass is present, it might not be fully utilized. Additionally, age-related inflammation hinders muscle repair and growth. Compounding these issues is a tendency for reduced physical activity, which only accelerates the process.

Why Strength Drops So Fast After 60

After 60, we lose muscle mass at an accelerated rate. This process is called sarcopenia, and it’s not just about size — it’s about how quickly our muscles can generate force. Power output declines at roughly twice the rate of strength itself. This is why getting up from a chair becomes harder, or why we can’t react as fast when we stumble.

Several things drive this decline. Hormone levels drop, particularly testosterone and growth hormone, both of which play a role in maintaining muscle. The nervous system becomes less efficient at recruiting muscle fibres, so even if the muscle is there, we can’t always access its full potential. Inflammation increases with age, interfering with muscle repair and growth. And many people simply become less active, which accelerates everything.

Why Bodyweight Beats Machines

Machines lock you into a fixed path of movement, which removes the need for stabiliser muscles to fire. That might feel easier, but it doesn’t prepare your body for real-world movement. When you stand up from a chair, walk up stairs, or reach for something on a shelf, your body needs to coordinate multiple muscle groups and maintain balance. Bodyweight exercises train exactly that.

They also force you to move through a full range of motion in a way that feels natural, recruiting more muscle fibres across your entire body for better functional strength and improved coordination.

There’s another advantage worth mentioning: bodyweight exercises are self-limiting. You can’t use more resistance than your body can handle, which reduces injury risk. If you can’t control the movement, you won’t be able to complete it. That built-in feedback naturally protects you from doing too much too soon.

Sit-to-Stand

The sit-to-stand is the single most effective bodyweight exercise for rebuilding functional strength after 60. It’s exactly what it sounds like: standing up from a chair and sitting back down under control. This movement trains the muscles you use every single day, particularly your quads, glutes, and core.

Muscles Trained: Quadriceps, glutes, core

How to Do It:

  • Sit in a sturdy chair with your feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart
  • Lean forward slightly from the hips, not by rounding your back
  • Push through your heels and stand up without using your hands for assistance
  • Pause briefly at the top
  • Lower yourself back down slowly and with control

Recommended Sets and Reps: 3 sets of 8–12 reps. If 8 reps feels too easy, slow down the lowering phase to 3–4 seconds per rep. If you can’t complete 8 reps without using your hands, start with a higher chair or use a light touch on the armrests for balance only, not to push yourself up.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t rock forward and use momentum to stand — your muscles should be doing the work, not momentum
  • Don’t let your knees cave inward as you stand — keep them tracking in line with your toes
  • Don’t plop down into the chair on the way back — control the descent, because that’s where a lot of the strength-building happens.

Wall Press-Up

This is a standing press-up performed against a wall. It builds upper body strength, particularly in your chest, shoulders, and triceps, and it’s much more accessible than a floor press-up.

Muscles Trained: Chest, shoulders, triceps

How to Do It:

  • Stand facing a wall, about an arm’s length away
  • Place your hands flat on the wall at shoulder height and shoulder-width apart
  • Keep your body straight from head to heels and engage your core
  • Lower your chest toward the wall by bending your elbows
  • Push back to the starting position

Recommended Sets and Reps: 3 sets of 10–15 reps. If this feels too easy, step further away from the wall to increase the angle.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t let your hips sag or your lower back arch — keep your core tight the entire time
  • Don’t flare your elbows out to the sides — keep them at roughly a 45-degree angle to your body
  • Don’t shortcut the range of motion — your nose should almost touch the wall at the bottom of the movement.

Glute Bridge

This exercise strengthens your glutes, hamstrings, and lower back. Strong glutes are essential for walking, climbing stairs, and maintaining good posture.

Muscles Trained: Glutes, hamstrings, lower back

How to Do It:

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart
  • Position your heels close enough that you can almost touch them with your fingertips
  • Press through your heels and lift your hips toward the ceiling until your body forms a straight line from your knees to your shoulders
  • Squeeze your glutes at the top and hold for a second
  • Lower back down with control

Recommended Sets and Reps: 3 sets of 12–15 reps. If this feels easy, hold the top position for 3–5 seconds on each rep.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t arch your lower back at the top — tuck your pelvis slightly and squeeze your glutes hard
  • Don’t push through your toes — keep the weight in your heels throughout
  • Don’t let your knees fall inward or outward — keep them aligned with your hips and ankles.

Modified Plank

This builds core strength and stability, which supports almost every movement you do. A strong core protects your lower back and improves your balance.

Muscles Trained: Core, shoulders, lower back

How to Do It:

  • Start on your hands and knees
  • Walk your hands forward slightly so your shoulders are directly over your wrists
  • Keep your back flat and your core engaged
  • Hold this position, making sure your hips don’t sag and your lower back doesn’t arch

Recommended Sets and Reps: 3 sets of 15–30 seconds. As you get stronger, extend the hold time or progress to a full plank on your toes.

Avoid These Mistakes:

  • Don’t let your hips drop — keep your core tight and think about pulling your belly button toward your spine
  • Don’t hold your breath — breathe normally throughout the hold
  • Don’t let your shoulders creep up toward your ears — keep them pulled down and back.

When You’ll Start Feeling Results

The first changes happen in the nervous system, not the muscles themselves. Within the first 1–2 weeks, the exercises will feel easier and more controlled. That’s not because you’ve built muscle yet — it’s because your nervous system is getting better at recruiting the muscle fibers you already have.

By weeks 3–4, everyday tasks start feeling less challenging. Getting out of a chair won’t require as much effort. Carrying shopping bags or getting up from the floor will feel more manageable.

At the 6–8 week mark, you’ll see actual muscle growth and measurable strength gains. You’ll be able to do more reps, hold positions longer, or progress to harder variations. Other people might start commenting that you’re moving better or standing taller.

By 12 weeks, the improvements become undeniable. You’ll have built a solid base of functional strength, your posture will be better, and movements that felt difficult at the start will feel routine. The key is consistency — these timelines assume you’re doing the routine most days of the week.

Recovery and Nutrition Tips That Accelerate Results

The exercises are only part of the picture. A few habits outside the routine make a significant difference.

Protein is the single most important nutritional factor. After 60, our bodies become less efficient at using protein to build and repair muscle, so we need more of it, not less. Aim for 1.2–1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, spread across meals. A 70kg person should be eating 84–112 grams daily. Include protein at every meal, not just dinner.

Sleep matters more than most people realize. This is when your body repairs muscle tissue and consolidates the strength gains from your training. Poor sleep reduces muscle protein synthesis and increases inflammation. Aim for 7–8 hours per night.

Consistency beats intensity. Doing this routine five days a week at moderate effort will give you better results than three days a week at maximum effort. Two rest days per week is ideal.

Hydration is often overlooked. Dehydration reduces muscle function and slows recovery. A simple rule: check your urine color. It should be pale yellow, not dark.

Daily movement matters too. Walking, stretching, or light activity on rest days keeps your body mobile and supports recovery. Sitting for long periods between sessions undermines the strength you’re building — stand up and move around regularly throughout the day.

Unlock Ageless Strength: 4 Daily Exercises to Combat Age-Related Muscle Loss After 60

A seasoned personal trainer’s four-step program to restore functional strength for those over 60 from the comfort of home

With four decades in the fitness industry, I’ve often heard from individuals over 60 about their concerns regarding rapid muscle strength decline. As a personal trainer and fitness educator at TRAINFITNESS, I frequently emphasize to my clients that bodyweight exercises are highly effective for regaining strength. The beauty of these exercises is that they don’t necessitate a gym membership or costly equipment. Here are four exercises that can help you rebuild functional strength right in your living room.

As we age beyond 60, we experience a faster loss of muscle mass, a condition known as sarcopenia. This issue isn’t merely about shrinking muscles; it’s about the dwindling ability of muscles to generate force. Power output diminishes at nearly twice the rate that strength does. This decline explains why activities like rising from a chair become more challenging or why our reflexes slow down when we trip.

Why Strength Drops So Fast After 60

Several factors contribute to this degeneration. As we age, hormone levels, including testosterone and growth hormone, decrease, both of which are crucial for muscle maintenance. Additionally, the nervous system becomes less adept at activating muscle fibers, leading to underutilization of existing muscle. Age-related inflammation further disrupts muscle repair and growth. Moreover, a reduction in physical activity often exacerbates these effects.

After 60, we lose muscle mass at an accelerated rate. This process is called sarcopenia, and it’s not just about size — it’s about how quickly our muscles can generate force. Ex-NYPD Officer Wins Bail Amid Controversial Appeal in Fatal Cooler Incident

0

In a recent development, a former New York City police officer, who was handed a three to nine-year prison sentence for his role in the tragic death of a suspect, will be released on bail as he seeks to appeal his conviction. The officer, Erik Duran, had been charged with manslaughter after throwing a cooler at Eric Duprey, a suspect attempting to escape, leading to a fatal accident.

On Friday, a state appeals court granted Duran a $300,000 bail, allowing him temporary freedom during the appeal process, according to reports from the New York Post.

Vincent Vallelong, the president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, expressed his satisfaction with the decision. “I am very pleased to announce that the SBA’s team of attorneys has secured bail for Erik Duran, and he will be released from prison and remain free throughout his appeal,” Vallelong stated, highlighting the significance of the ruling for Duran, his family, and law enforcement officers nationwide.

The incident that led to Duran’s conviction occurred when he threw a picnic cooler filled with drinks at Duprey, who was attempting to flee on a motorized scooter. The impact caused Duprey to crash, resulting in his death. The sentencing took place earlier this month at the Bronx County Hall of Justice.

Duran’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, told Fox Digital that it was no surprise that their client was released.

“We are very pleased but not surprised that the Appellate Division found that there are legitimate appellate issues in Sgt Duran’s case,” Aidala said. “It was obvious to the Court that he is not a flight risk nor a danger to the community and was entitled to be at home with his family during pendency of the appeal.”

Duran, 38, a married father of three, was convicted of manslaughter in February for the August 2023 death of Eric Duprey. Duprey was attempting to flee arrest on a moped during an undercover drug sting in the Bronx when Duran chucked an Igloo cooler at him, causing him to crash onto the pavement.

He died instantly.

Duran maintained he was trying to protect other officers from Duprey, who was operating the motorized bike on a sidewalk.

During sentencing, Bronx Judge Guy Mitchell said the punishment would serve as a “general deterrent” to other officers from acting recklessly.

He rejected Duran’s defense that his actions were justified, concluding that the former officer threw the cooler because he was upset that Duprey was fleeing.

“They had enough to investigate and catch him on a different day,” Mitchell said of the police. “The distinction is that the deceased will no longer be seen again by his family.”

Tragic Discovery: 14-Year-Old Girl Found Deceased Behind Dirt Pile Spurs Investigation

0

Inset: Rubi Perez (Obituary). Background: The cemetery and field near where Rubi”s body was found in Great Bend, Kan. (Google Maps).

A 14-year-old boy from Kansas has been arrested following the discovery of a missing teenage girl’s body, brutally beaten to death and hidden behind a mound of dirt.

Barton County Attorney J. Colin Reynolds revealed on Thursday that the boy, whose identity remains confidential, faces first-degree murder charges in connection with the tragic death of 14-year-old Rubi Perez.

Rubi was last seen on the evening of April 8 after attending a class at Holy Family School in Great Bend, a small town situated about 100 miles northwest of Wichita. Her body was tragically uncovered the following morning in Veterans Memorial Park, which lies across from the town cemetery and near the Holy Family Catholic Parish Center.

The Great Bend Police Department detailed the grim discovery in a press release, stating, “Great Bend Police Officers responded to the 4700 block of 17th Street Terrace in Great Bend in reference to a juvenile female located behind a large dirt pile. The juvenile female was determined to be deceased.”

Rubi, an eighth grader at Great Bend Middle School, was a classmate of her alleged killer. The school is located less than a mile from both the park and the Catholic complex.

The events have led to an outpouring of mourning, remembrance, and speculation among the middle school’s student body, according to a report by Wichita-based ABC affiliate KAKE.

“This morning, I thought it was okay, yesterday felt off,” one of Rubi’s friends told the TV station. “It just seemed a little different. You know, something told me after school to go tell her bye. I didn’t listen to it. I just thought she’d be okay this morning. Then I get to school, everyone’s sad. I’m like, ‘Where’s Rubi? Oh, maybe she was at breakfast.’ Then I found out she’s missing.”

Police were alerted just after 8:30 p.m. on the night in question; Rubi’s body was found around 9:10 a.m. the next morning.

Investigators were hard to miss as the girl’s remains were uncovered amid the massive mound of dirt, which appears to be the byproduct of some construction project.

“I noticed off in the distance there was a big pile of dirt over there there was some people standing on top of that dirt,” a Great Bend resident told KAKE, while gesturing near the cemetery. “We were around the railroad tracks in the area and they had it blocked off at this entrance over here and blocks over there with some barricades and there was actually a lot of cops, maybe 10 or 15 or so.”

News of the grim discovery quickly spread at the middle school.

“We get the teacher, she’s on her phone, and then she’s like, ‘They found her,’” the slain girl’s friend continued. “I about ran out of the classroom to go to the other girls, you know? Well, she just said, ‘Wait, come here.’ And then she sat me down and said they didn’t find her alive.”

Rubi’s obituary remembers her fondly:

She was a standout student among her peers and teachers, always spreading positivity to anyone she came across. She was an exceptional athlete that excelled at track, volleyball, and basketball. Rubi loved to do make up and enhance her already stunning natural beauty. Her legacy will live on in her sweet demeanor, smile, zest for life, and offering kindness always.

Law enforcement has yet to release her official cause of death, but in the absence of formal announcements, the victim’s loved ones have filled in some of the blanks about the crime.

The earlier-quoted friend told KAKE she heard from a mother who knows Rubi’s mother and that the girl died from blunt force trauma to the head caused by a cinder block.

In the aftermath of the killing, police surveyed the crime scene, conducted interviews, and executed several search warrants. The alleged killer was arrested later that same afternoon, police said. He is currently being detained in the Barton County Detention Center.

A detention hearing for the defendant is slated for April 21.

No motive for the murder has been floated as of this writing.

EMILY’s List Endorses Katie Porter as Top Contender Following Swalwell’s Departure

0

EMILY’s List, a political action committee known for its pro-abortion stance and previous support of candidates like Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris, is currently advocating for former Representative Katie Porter in the California gubernatorial race. Porter, who is aligned with Elizabeth Warren’s political ideology, is considered by the organization to be the candidate most likely to benefit from Eric Swalwell’s recent withdrawal from the race.

The organization’s memo claims that Porter is experiencing “significant late momentum” and describes her as “the most-prepared candidate to meet this moment.” With Swalwell stepping down due to sexual assault allegations, the memo argues that Porter presents Democrats with the “strongest path to victory in California” and emphasizes the historic opportunity to elect the state’s first female governor.

According to EMILY’s List, Porter is in a prime position to capitalize on Swalwell’s exit. An internal poll cited in the memo reveals that 46% of Swalwell’s supporters regard Porter as their second choice, compared to 14% for Tom Steyer and 9% for Xavier Becerra. The memo asserts that in a narrowed Democratic field, Porter is currently tied with Steyer and well-positioned as voting nears.

The memo also underscores Porter’s potential to challenge what it describes as the “disastrous and dangerous policies” of the Trump administration. It highlights that Porter is the only candidate not accepting corporate PAC money, contrasting her with Steyer, whom the memo characterizes as “an out-of-touch billionaire attempting to purchase the governorship.” Citing the San Francisco Chronicle, it concludes that Democrats can secure victory by uniting behind Porter.

Breitbart News has raised questions about EMILY’s List’s track record in elections, including a 2015 report suggesting the group’s challenges in governor, congressional, and statewide races. The organization had also advised Hillary Clinton in 2016 to downplay the historic significance of becoming the first female president, and later supported her campaign by mobilizing women voters. Additionally, EMILY’s List launched a multimillion-dollar initiative to boost Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 election.

EMILY’s List did not address how voters may react to Porter’s increasingly scandal-plagued personal and professional record.

On self-defense and gun rights, Porter campaigned in 2018 on pushing California-style gun control nationally, saying she supported “a ban on assault weapons” and “mandatory background checks on all gun sales.” She also said “common-sense gun protections are our values” and ran with endorsements from Moms Demand Action and Gabby Giffords’ gun-control group.

On women’s sports, Porter said during a 2023 television appearance that it “should be up to sporting bodies to make the decisions” about trans-identifying athletes competing in women’s events. When asked about former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines, who competed against biological male William “Lia” Thomas, Porter said Gaines was trying to “get likes and get clicks.”

On immigration and crimes committed by illegal aliens, Porter called the death of Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student murdered by an illegal alien, tragic and important to acknowledge, but said, “The important thing to focus on is any one instance shouldn’t shape our overall immigration policy.”

On abortion, In 2019, Porter said, “Women cannot have social and economic equality without the right to control our bodies.” In 2022, she linked abortion and inflation, saying the two “reinforce each other” because rising costs for food, fuel, and housing mean “people need to be in charge of how many mouths they’re going to have to feed.” In 2024, Porter claimed Republicans were coming for “every last bit of women’s freedom to make their own decisions about their health and about when and if to start a family.” She also warned that Republicans would eventually target IVF and birth control, saying, “Our rights are under attack, and we need to fight like hell.”

Porter, who remained silent when repeatedly asked whether she condemned protesters who burned the American flag and chanted “Death to America” during a pro-Palestinian demonstration, has also faced scrutiny over her treatment of fellow Americans, including staff, reporters, and other public officials.

In late 2022, former Wounded Warrior Fellow Sasha Georgiades, a Navy veteran, said Porter barred her from returning to the office for the final weeks of her fellowship after a coronavirus-related dispute. After Georgiades explained that a Navy friend had been murdered, Porter replied, “Well you gave me Covid,” and “My children have nobody to care for them.” Porter’s office denied retaliation and said the fellowship had already been scheduled to end.

Porter was also reported in 2023 to have texted then-Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan in July 2021, telling her she had a “reputation for not staying in your lane and seeking attention,” later adding, “I am a United States Congresswoman. You can lecture me on professionalism. And see what happens.”

In 2025 additional reports drew attention to Porter’s treatment of staff and others. One resurfaced video showed Porter yelling at a staffer, “Get out of my fucking shot!” during a meeting with then-Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, while another showed her threatening to end an interview with a California reporter. Porter later said she “could have handled things better” and apologized.

A 2023 report on divorce filings said her ex-husband, Matthew Hoffman, alleged that Porter physically abused him during their marriage, including by dumping scalding mashed potatoes on his head and injuring him during a coffee-pot incident. Porter had previously said in court filings that Hoffman became violent only after their separation, apart from an earlier incident.

In 2024, Porter sought a restraining order against an ex-boyfriend, alleging months of harassment, threats, and repeated contact with her family, staff, and fellow lawmakers. Porter said the situation caused her serious fear for her safety and well-being, while the ex-boyfriend denied her account and claimed she was seeking the restraining order to preempt him from suing her and going to the media.

Shocking Childcare Facility Scandal: Woman Charged with Child Abuse After Intense Investigation

In Washington County, Virginia, a woman from Meadowview faces charges following an inquiry into a local childcare center.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office announced that 44-year-old Felicia Ann Martin has been arrested on charges of simple assault and contributing to the delinquency or abuse of a child.

Authorities apprehended Martin after a month-long probe into allegations of child abuse at the childcare facility. This investigation was triggered on March 6 after Child Protective Services reached out to law enforcement.

With the information provided by CPS, the sheriff’s office conducted a thorough investigation, which resulted in the issuance of warrants.

Martin underwent a hearing before a magistrate and was initially held on a $5,000 bond. She has since been released, according to the sheriff’s office.

As of Friday, the investigation remains active and ongoing, and the sheriff’s office asks anyone with additional information to contact investigators.

Iran Conflict Impact Leads Australian Home Buyers to Reconsider Auctions

0

Real estate experts indicate that potential homebuyers are adopting a “waiting game” approach, hesitant to make offers on new homes and leaving sellers who need to offload properties in a difficult position.

According to property research firm Cotality, auction clearance rates in major cities are currently below 60 percent. After the Easter break, the rate showed a slight improvement, increasing from 55 percent to 57 percent last week.

The decline in buyer interest is particularly noticeable in Australia’s largest housing markets, Sydney and Melbourne.

Gerard Burg, Head of Research at Cotality Australia, observes that these regions are now “transitioning to buyer markets.” As a result, many sellers are opting to withdraw their properties from auction or are postponing the sale process.

Nationally, clearance rates have hit their lowest point in 15 months, excluding periods affected by quieter public holidays.

Current national clearance rates are at their lowest for 15 months, for outside quieter public holiday periods.

In Sydney and Melbourne last week they were 54 per cent and 57 per cent, respectively.

About 2650 homes across Australia are scheduled for auction this week. Both Sydney and Melbourne have more than 1000 homes going under the hammer.

The unseasonal plunge in clearance rates comes after two consecutive interest rate hikes curtailed buyers’ budgets. There are also worries a third may be on the cards when the Reserve Bank board meets to fix rates next month.

It all adds to the economic fallout from the Iran conflict which has seen spikes in the cost of fuel and other essentials hammer household budgets.

Now the concern is approaching months may bring a winter of discontent for the property market instead of a mid-year revival.

Brett Sutton, a mortgage broker at Two Red Shoes in Sydney, says the weeks ahead look uncertain.

“What we’re seeing is not a complete slowdown or stop to the market, but people being cautious,” he said.

But the prospect of a “subdued” winter for home sales across suburbs remains while the Iran war lasts, he says.

Another factor impacting sales is property investors pulling back amid reports about changes to the capital gains tax and negative gearing in next month’s federal budget.

“Those investors who are thinking of purchasing for capital gains reasons are probably sitting and watching now.”

Industry experts say the fundamentals of the Australian property market remain strong, especially in many capital cities where demand outstrips supply. But they say vendors should be prepared to accept lower auction prices if they need to sell now.

Other capitals look rosier

Burg says the national outlook is less gloomy, with Perth and Brisbane the bright spots.

Properties in the WA capital are selling in a median time of nine days, while Brisbane homes go in about 17 days.

Adelaide has been the strongest performing of the smaller capital cities. Last week, the South Australian capital recorded an auction clearance rate of 70 per cent.

Looking ahead, Sutton says the Reserve Bank’s policy on interest rates over coming months will have a big impact on buyer’s spending power.

Static property prices and higher rates would create a perfect storm of barriers for anyone looking to purchase a home, he says.

”It will be just that much harder to buy.”

Dorit Kemsley Opens Up About Feeling Overlooked at Alexia’s Wedding, Questions Kyle’s Invitation Intentions

Dorit Kemsley has claimed she was completely snubbed by her fellow Real Housewives of Beverly Hills stars during the wedding of Alexia Umansky and Jake Zingerman.

RHOBH’s Dorit Kemsley Says No One Acknowledged Her at Alexia’s Wedding and Accuses Kyle of Inviting Her for Public Image as Kyle Explains Including PK and Cast Weighs In

Reflecting on her choice to attend the ceremony amid tensions with Kyle Richards, Dorit, 49, shared her perspective on why she was included and how it felt when her co-stars left her out. She recounted how Kyle mentioned that her estranged husband, Paul “PK” Kemsley, 58, was invited and suggested Dorit’s presence held significance for her.

“I wasn’t even sure PK would attend since he got the invite so late,” Dorit explained during the April 16 episode of the RHOBH: After Show. “Everyone thought I wouldn’t dare show up. Maybe they invited PK hoping I’d stay away. But I walked in solo, defying their expectations, and [Kathy Hilton] approached me, saying, ‘You truly are pure class.’”

Despite her bold entrance at Alexia and Jake’s wedding, Dorit revealed she was largely overlooked by both her co-stars and PK.

After showing up to Alexia and Jake’s nuptials, Dorit said she was ignored by her castmates and PK.

“These motherf*ckers, not one of them — [Erika Jayne], [Sutton Stracke], and PK—acknowledged my presence. Not one,” she stated.

According to Dorit, she believes Kyle invited her to keep up with the public image she portrayed.

“Because how is she gonna explain not inviting me if she’s saying she wants to move forward, if she’s playing this publicly, she’s saying, ‘I want to move forward, I’m so glad it’s behind us?’” Dorit wondered. “That’s the image that she’s portraying.”

While they were in the midst of a messy feud after their heated encounter in Italy, Kyle texted Dorit, “I hope you’ll be at the wedding,” amid her book launch, so she went.

And while Dorit suggested that not one of her castmates acknowledged her, she clarified that Kyle did come up to her at the wedding.

“She’s the only one. She did. She came up to me, and she gave me a kiss, and she said, you know, ‘Thank you for coming,’” Dorit recalled.

Meanwhile, Kyle admitted that she didn’t have reservations about inviting both Dorit and PK because she knew it was important to her own estranged husband, Mauricio Umansky, 55.

“To me, it was, you know, we invite both, and whoever’s not comfortable, you know, they’re not gonna come. And he’s one of Mau’s best friends, and Mau wants his close friends there. And, you know, lo and behold, they both showed up,” she revealed. “I don’t believe they ever spoke.”

Kyle then said that Dorit “never spoke to us either,” detailing an awkward moment between Dorit and Erika, 54.

“At one point, I was standing there, and I saw Erika and Dorit at the bar … but they were just invisible to each other, and it was a really weird moment,” she admitted.

“She didn’t speak to us,” Erika confirmed. “[But] it was a beautiful night … This is being adults and showing up for people when maybe everything isn’t so comfortable. And you do that for your friends.”

After Sutton revealed that “PK spoke to [her], but Dorit did not,” Kyle said she was appreciative of Dorit’s decision to show up.

“In spite of everything we’re going through after Italy, I did appreciate her showing up to Alexia’s wedding. That actually gave me hope that, like, that’s the Dorit that I know. And I know that she cares about my daughters like I care about her children. And my daughters, you know, really care about her. She’s always been sweet with them. I was happy that she showed up. It meant something to me, even if we weren’t really talking that night,” she explained.

Then, in closing, Kyle offered an update on her daughter and son-in-law.

“Alexia and Jake are doing great. They are settling into married life,” she shared.

The three-part Real Housewives of Beverly Hills season 15 reunion begins airing on Thursday, April 23, at 8/7c on Bravo.

Trump Greets Erika Kirk Following Her Absence from JD Vance Gathering

President Donald Trump warmly greeted Erika Kirk with a kiss on the cheek and a hug at an event in Arizona, just days after she chose not to attend a gathering featuring Vice President JD Vance.

The event, a Turning Point USA ‘Build the Red Wall’ rally, took place on Friday afternoon at Dream City Church in Phoenix, Arizona, the base of the late Charlie Kirk’s organization.

Erika Kirk opted out of the earlier event with Vice President JD Vance, expressing concerns about security following the tragic assassination of her husband.

During his speech, Trump paid tribute to Charlie Kirk, focusing on his administration’s successes as the crucial November midterms approached.

“Charlie was taken from us by a brutal assassin who thought he could silence an entire movement by ending one man’s voice,” the President remarked.

‘But standing here today, it’s clear to see that Charlie’s voice is not silenced. It’s roaring. And roaring back loudly, frankly, than ever before,’ Trump added.

During her introduction of Trump, Kirk talked about her late husband, but also called attention to the most recent Democratic scandal – the downfall of California Representative Eric Swalwell.

She implored the crowd that Arizona, which has elected a Democratic governor and two Democratic senators in recent cycles, not turn into the bright blue California.

Swalwell abandoned his gubernatorial run and resigned from Congress after rape and other sexual misconduct allegations were leveled at him.

He denied the rape allegations, but has apologized to his wife publicly for his misdeeds.

‘We don’t want Arizona to elect people like Eric Swalwell,’ Kirk said. ‘We do have his best friend, Ruben Gallego, here. So we have some work to do.’

Gallego, a former House colleague of Swalwell’s, was elected to the US Senate in 2024, over Trump ally Kari Lake.

Earlier this week, Charlie Kirk’s widow pulled out of a Turning Point USA event in Georgia, headlined by Vance.

‘I know that she did get some threats,’ Vance said onstage at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. ‘I was a little worried that we were going to have to cancel the event because Erika was not going to come, and she was very worried about it.’

Vance expressed that he had spoken with the Secret Service and didn’t fear for his safety.

Charlie Kirk was assassinated in broad daylight while speaking at a Turning Point USA event on Utah Valley University’s campus in September, a shocking moment of political violence in the United States.

It propelled his 37-year-old widow to political prominence, with the Daily Mail reporting earlier this week that Kirk was now feeling the strain of being in the limelight. That factored into her decision to cancel on Vance.

She did attend the bridal shower of Bettina Anderson, Donald Trump Jr’s fiancée, over the weekend, with the Daily Mail’s DC Insider newsletter reporting exclusive details, including that the President called into the event to wish the happy couple well.

‘Everyone was really happy to see Erika Kirk and rallying around her in her time of difficulty,’ one shower guest told the Daily Mail, who declined to be named.

Trump’s stop in Phoenix marks his second stop in a tour of two important swing states – Nevada and Arizona – as he tries to shore up Republicans’ economic message ahead of the November midterms.

During the Arizona event, Trump complained about what could be a forthcoming shellacking.

He bemoaned how the incumbent’s party traditionally loses Congressional seats in the midterms.

‘It doesn’t make sense,’ he complained. ‘Even if you have a President who is doing a good job.’

President Donald Trump bemoaned what could be a shellacking of the Republican Party in the upcoming midterms during his appearance Friday afternoon in Phoenix, Arizona

‘It should be the opposite, we’re doing well, we’re doing our job, we’re ending wars,’ he noted.

He teased that the Iran war, which he started alongside Israel, should be wrapped up soon, suggesting the closeness of a peace deal.

‘Wait until you see prices fall. Did you see oil is down today?’ he asked the crowd.

On Thursday afternoon, Trump spoke in Las Vegas about his ‘no tax on tips’ policy that was included in the ‘big, beautiful bill.’

There, he mused that the White House staff’s attempt to tout the policy with a DoorDash delivery of McDonald’s to the Oval Office was ‘tacky.’

‘You know, they come up with these crazy ideas … They’re a little embarrassing,’ he told the crowd.
