Why Jacinda Ardern Resigns As New Zealand Prime Minister?

Jacinda Ardern has choked back tears as she announced her resignation as New Zealand Prime Minister in an emotional press conference.

Her resignation comes into effect on Sunday if the Labour Party can elect her replacement, or on February 7 if the process was drawn out.

‘I am human. Politicians are human. We give all we can for as long as we can – and then it’s time. And for me, it’s time,’ she said.

‘I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice.’

When Jacinda Ardern announced her resignation as prime minister of New Zealand, she struggled to hold back her tears.

Prior to the impending election, Ms. Ardern stated that her party’s polling deficit to the opposition National Party had nothing to do with her decision to resign.

She declared, “I am not quitting because I think we can’t win the election, but because I think we can and will.”

The following New Zealand election, Ms. Ardern stated during her departure speech, will take place on October 14.

When asked if she will join the UN after leaving office, the departing prime minister dodged the question.

Ms Ardern shared a message to her fiancé, Clarke Gayford, saying: ‘Let’s finally get married’.

She resigns at just 42 after becoming leader just over five years ago on October 26, 2017, and was New Zealand’s youngest-ever PM.

What Are Signs Of Health Issues On The Tongue?

What Are Signs Of Health Issues On The Tongue? Many of us rarely look at our tongues, but dentists say they are a ‘window’ into the health of the body. Read article for more information.

What Are Signs Of Health Issues On The Tongue?

Problems ranging from vitamin deficiencies, allergies, and a weak immune system can manifest first in the tongue — making the organ appear smooth, and red or allowing a fungal infection to appear.

Last week, NewsFinale.com revealed the hidden health issues that you should look out for in your fingernails. Now, we look at the conditions that often show symptoms in people’s tongues.

Pictured above are five conditions that can be detected on tongues, alongside their causes. A strawberry red tongue (top right) can also be caused by an infection, such as that from Strep throat, or a vitamin deficiency. A yellow tongue could also be a sign of gastritis. It is caused by a build-up of dead skin cells on the tongue, which can be triggered by a lack of saliva — as happens in gastritis patients — or not brushing often enough

White patches on the tongue may be a sign of a fungal infection, or oral thrush

White patches on the tongue may be a sign of a fungal infection, or oral thrush

White patches are a sign of a fungal infection

At some time in our life, a lot of people will get white patches on their tongues. But did you realize that it might be a fungus?

Small quantities of the yeast-like fungus Candida are present on the skin, in the mouth, throat, gut, and – for females — the vagina.

It is not dangerous and usually goes unnoticed.

However, it has the potential to start growing uncontrollably at any time, leading to a white layer on the tongue.

This occurs when drugs or antibiotics eliminate beneficial bacteria that are controlling the fungus, allowing it to spread swiftly.

It can also be caused by chronic stress weakening the immune system, which can also leave the gates open for the fungus to start growing

Dr Uchenna Akosa, a dentist at Rutgers University in New Jersey, told Shape: ‘It’s a very white coating [on the top and sides of the tongue], and underneath [the tongue] it can be red and raw.’

Other symptoms include a loss of taste and smell and pain while eating or swallowing.

Tongue scraping prevents gum disease, cavities and bad breath

One teeth-based TikTok trend — known as tongue scraping — can actually boost oral hygiene, dentists say.

The infection is easily treated using an antifungal medication, which can be delivered in a tablet or liquid form.

People may be able to prevent it on the tongue by brushing the tongue twice a day even though it is not contagious.

According to the NHS in the UK, oral thrush is a frequent infection in infants, affecting one in seven of them. Due to their immature immune systems, infants are particularly vulnerable.

Because they have a weakened immune system and the yeast can become trapped beneath dentures, older persons who wear dentures are also more susceptible to the illness.

According to estimations from 2011, older patients in hospitals are more likely to get thrush because their immune systems are less robust.

Smooth tongue? You’re not consuming enough vitamins

A smooth tongue can be a warning sign of a vitamin deficiency

A smooth tongue can be a warning sign of a vitamin deficiency

The tongue can also warn of vitamin deficiencies, such as a lack of iron and vitamin B12 — both important for making red blood cells in the body that carry oxygen to different organs.

Normally, the tongue has hundreds of tiny bumps on its surface known as papillae, with each containing several taste buds.

But when someone is deficient in vitamins these papillae start to waste away and drop off the tongue.

Dr Mark Wolff, a dentist at Penn Medicine in Pennsylvania, told Shape: ‘All of a sudden, the tongue becomes glossy and loses texture.

‘That’s a real defining moment. The tongue is an amazing location in that respect, that so many nutrient-bound conditions just pop right out on the tongue.’

Lacking vitamin B12 and iron leads to fewer red blood cells in the body.,

This means that less oxygen is carried to organs, with the lack of oxygen in the tongue leading to papillae to start to waste away.

Patients may be more prone to notice other signs of a vitamin deficiency, such as excessive weariness, chest pain, and pale skin.

Adult men should consume about 8 milligrams (mg) of iron per day, while women should consume 18mg, according to the National Institutes of Health.

For men, this can be attained by consuming seven to fourteen turkey breasts daily.

Vitamin deficiencies can be prevented in people by consuming a healthy, balanced diet.

According to estimates, 6% of Americans suffer from a vitamin B12 deficiency, while approximately 10 million Americans have an iron deficiency.

Sores on the tongue, known as canker sores, can indicate injury or stress

Sores on the tongue, known as canker sores, can indicate injury or stress

Those sores on your tongue could be an injury or stress

Canker sores are small, round, painful lesions that may form on the tongue, cheeks or gums.

Dentists say the main cause of these marks — medically termed aphthous ulcers — is injury to the mouth.

This can be caused by accidentally biting down on areas in the mouth, or even by brushing areas too strongly.

But regularly getting canker sores could also be a sign of stress.

The state of mental strain can lead people to bite down on cheeks and tongues more often as they clench their teeth, meaning they have more of these sores.

Stress can cause the tongue to repeatedly press up against clenched teeth, which can result in indentations on the top or side of the tongue.

Other factors include a food allergy to foods like cheese, coffee, strawberries, or even menopausal hormone fluctuations.

These lesions are benign and typically disappear on their own, without any complications.

Medical professionals advise patients to see a doctor if they have sores that are especially large, persistent, do not heal, and make it difficult to eat or drink.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a tiny sore takes one to two weeks to heal, but larger ones can take up to six weeks.

Strawberry tongue can be caused by a food allergy, infection or vitamin deficiency

How a strawberry tongue could indicate a secret allergy

If you’ve ever suffered from a red tongue after eating a certain food, it could be a sign of a hidden allergy.

For many people with mild food allergies, their tongues become radiant red — sometimes known as ‘strawberry tongue’.

It can also become sore and swollen due to an allergy, or the sides of the mouth can start swelling as well.

Dentists say this may indicate a food allergy, particularly against certain fruits and vegetables.

The immune system malfunctions and targets substances it misidentifies as foreign invaders, resulting in the red, inflamed tongue.

Bacterial infections that result from strep throat are among the other reasons why people get “strawberry tongue.”

In these situations, the bacteria induce the red tongue, sometimes known as “scarlet fever,” by releasing poison into the tongue.

Once again, patients are likely to notice further signs of this infection, such as a fever, sore throat, and red skin rash.

A crimson tongue can also result from vitamin deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin B-12.

Your tongue can turn yellow when dead skin cells build up on it. This is 'harmless' but tends to be a sign of poor oral hygiene

Your tongue can turn yellow when dead skin cells build up on it. This is ‘harmless’ but tends to be a sign of poor oral hygiene

Yellow patches mean you’re not brushing properly… or it could be a sign of gastritis

A yellow tongue is caused by a build-up of dead skin cells on the surface of the tongue, which are then broken down by bacteria giving them the yellow hue.

Doctors say the build-up itself is normally ‘harmless’, but could be an indication of an underlying condition.

This includes gastritis, where the lining of the stomach becomes inflamed — often due to an infection.

When people suffer from gastritis they are likely to produce less saliva, meaning dead skin cells are cleared from the surface of the tongue less often.

As they build up, they can then cause a ‘yellow tongue’ to appear.

Patients are likely to also note other symptoms of gastritis, however, such as pain in the upper abdomen, nausea and vomiting. Gastritis accounts for about 2 million doctor visits a year, estimates suggest.

According to doctors, having a “yellow tongue” may also indicate that a person is not brushing their tongue frequently enough, enabling dead cells to build up.

Everyone should immediately brush their tongues after brushing their teeth twice daily. A toothbrush should be used for this.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, other factors that contribute to a yellow tongue include smoking, consuming meals with a yellow hue, chewing tobacco, and even using particular mouthwashes.

A sore throat, a fever, foul breath, and a bad taste in the mouth are some other signs of a yellow tongue.

Eight out of every 1,000 people have gastritis.

What should a healthy tongue look like?

So, what does a healthy tongue look like in real life?

According to medical professionals, it should be pink in color, ranging from light to darker shades.

The tongue should also be covered in numerous tiny bumps that are taste buds.

A healthy tongue should be pink and covered in tiny nodules, according to Dr. Daniel Allen, who spoke to the Cleveland Clinic (papillae).

Any difference from the way your tongue usually looks or any discomfort should be taken seriously.

“Everyone should check their tongue every day as they brush their teeth and tongue,” they continue.

‘Any discolorations, lumps, sores or pain should be monitored and evaluated by a medical professional if they don’t go away within two weeks’.

13 Risk Factors Of Dementia- How To Prevent It? Read article for more information about dementia

Regular hearing checks, seven hours of sleep a night and more exercise are among 12 lifestyle factors that could slash a person's chances of dementia by up to 40 per cent

According to recent data, if more were done to stop dementia, hundreds of thousands of instances might be avoided.

Twelve lifestyle choices can reduce a person’s likelihood of developing dementia by as much as 40%. These include regular hearing exams, seven hours of sleep per night, and greater activity.

According to recent statistics from Alzheimer’s Research UK, however, only a third of Britons are aware of the fact that there are things they can do to help prevent dementia.

And only one in fifty people, according to a survey, are making every effort to prevent the disease.

13 Risk Factors Of Dementia

Some risk factors are modifiable, meaning that they can be changed. It has been estimated that around 40% of dementia cases may be the result of twelve key modifiable risk factors.

1. High blood pressure

People who have consistently high blood pressure (hypertension) in their mid-life (ages 45 to 65) are more likely to develop dementia compared to those with normal blood pressure.

High blood pressure can increase the risk of developing dementia, particularly vascular dementia, because of its effect on the heart, the arteries, and blood circulation.

2. Smoking

The evidence is strong and consistent that smokers are at a higher risk of developing dementia vs. non-smokers or ex-smokers.

It’s never too late to quit! Smokers who quit can reduce their risk of developing dementia.

3. Diabetes

People with type 2 diabetes in mid-life (ages 45 to 65) are at an increased risk of developing dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.

4. Obesity

Obesity in mid-life (ages 45 to 65) increases the risk of developing dementia. Obesity also increases the risk of developing other risk factors such as type 2 diabetes.

5. Lack of physical activity

Physical inactivity in later life (ages 65 and up) increases the risk of developing dementia.

6. Poor diet

An unhealthy diet, high in saturated fat, sugar, and salt, can increase the risk of developing many illnesses, including dementia and cardiovascular disease.

7. High alcohol consumption

Drinking excessively (more than 14 drinks per week for women and more than 21 drinks per week for men), can increase your risk of developing dementia.

8. Low levels of cognitive engagement

Cognitive engagement is thought to support the development of a
“cognitive reserve”. This is the idea that people who actively use their brains throughout their lives may be more protected against brain cell damage caused by dementia.

9. Depression

People who experience depression in mid- or later life have a higher risk of developing dementia. However, the relationship between depression and dementia is still unclear.

Many researchers believe that depression is a risk factor for dementia, whereas others believe it may be an early symptom of the disease, or both.

10. Traumatic brain injury

People who experience severe or repeated head injuries are at increased risk of developing dementia. Brain injuries may trigger a process that might eventually lead to dementia.

This particularly affects athletes in boxing, soccer, hockey, and football, which often have repeated head injuries.

Falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury. Falling is especially dangerous for older adults.

11. Hearing loss

Mild levels of hearing loss increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Though it is still unclear how exactly it affects cognitive decline, hearing loss can lead to social isolation, loss of independence, and problems with everyday activities.

12. Social isolation

Social isolation can increase the risk of hypertension, coronary heart disease, depression, and dementia.

Staying socially active may reduce the risk of dementia. Social interaction may also help slow down the progression of the disease.

13. Air pollution

The relationship between air pollution and dementia is still unclear. However, it’s estimated that those living close to busy roads have a higher risk of dementia because they may be exposed to higher levels of air pollution from vehicle emissions.

How To Prevent The Risks Of Having dementia

  • Getting at least seven hours of sleep a night
  • Regularly challenging the brain
  • Looking after mental well-being
  • Staying socially active
  • Looking after your hearing
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Staying physically active
  • Quitting smoking
  • Drinking responsibly
  • Keeping a healthy level of cholesterol
  • Maintaining healthy blood pressure
  • Managing diabetes as well as possible

Experts have recommended for the inclusion of brain health more prominently in the NHS Health Check and said straightforward measures like hearing tests in our 30s and 40s could help reduce the incidence of dementia.

To find out how they rank on modifiable risk factors and what they can do right away to improve their chances of avoiding it in the future, the public can take the charity’s online survey.

Dementia, a general term for a number of brain conditions that affect memory, reasoning, and cognition, affects about 900,000 individuals in the UK and 7 million in the US.

The Lancet Commission reached the following conclusion in 2020: By focusing on 12 modifiable risk factors, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol use, and smoking, up to 40% of cases could be averted or postponed.

A survey of more than 2,000 people indicated that only 2% of the population is taking the essential steps to reduce risks as much as feasible, despite the fact that cases are expected to rise by 75% by 2050.

For instance, social isolation, depression, physical inactivity/obesity, and brain injuries from falls are all risk factors that can be modified. Hearing loss has also been connected to these five risk factors.

Previous studies demonstrated that people who wear hearing aids have a 50% reduced chance of moderate cognitive impairment than people who do not, and that they can slow the progression from mild cognitive impairment to dementia by 27%.

However, the majority of people who require hearing aids still do not utilize them due to stigmas around them and access issues.

According to the most recent study, while 35% of respondents claimed they had concerns about their hearing, 60% said they had taken no action.

Hearing checks should be normalized and made “more accessible, more inexpensive, and can more readily be used by persons who have hearing impairment,” according to Dr. Sarah Bauermeister, senior scientist at Dementia Platforms UK.

‘Regular hearing checks at all population levels is very important and this is across the lifespan so that it’s normalised to have a hearing check whether you’re 30 or 40.

‘And then if we normalise hearing checks, it will normalise the wearing of a hearing aid, and the stigma will then be reduced about wearing a hearing aid.’

Fewer than a third (31 per cent) of the public said they get the recommended seven hours of quality sleep a night – the recommended amount for good brain health.

And over a third of people report that they are failing to challenge their brain regularly, with 32 per cent only managing to do this occasionally, and 4 per cent seldom doing it.

Scientists hope that by raising awareness of risk factors – which change as we age – people can take steps to reduce their chances of getting the disease.

Professor Jonathan Schott, chief medical officer for Alzheimer’s Research UK, said the disease had become people’s ‘biggest fear’ over ageing.

Increasing numbers of people are undergoing genetic testing, he said, which accounts for the remaining 60 per cent of cases.

Yet greater public awareness of lifestyle tweaks could reduce cases by tens of thousands a year, he suggests.

He said: ‘Dementia is now the most feared consequence of ageing and so people are wanting to know what they do about their risk.

People are coming to us after getting their genetic testing completed, which they can’t change, and asking about what they can do to reduce risk.

We can use the fact that several of the risk factors mentioned—including blood pressure, smoking, and other factors—are risk factors for both cancer and cardiovascular disease as part of the public health message.

“This tool has been designed because it is empowering for people to realize that there are things they can do.

WHAT IS DEMENTIA?

A mix of several dementias may exist in some individuals.

Each person will experience dementia in a different way depending on the type that is identified.

Although dementia is a worldwide disease, it is more prevalent in richer nations where people are more likely to survive to very old ages.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED?

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, there are currently over 900,000 dementia sufferers in the UK. By 2040, it is expected to reach 1.6 million.

Between 50 and 75 percent of those with dementia have Alzheimer’s disease, making it the most prevalent type of dementia.

There are thought to be 5.5 million Alzheimer’s patients in the US. In the upcoming years, a similar percentage increase is anticipated.

A person’s likelihood of having dementia rises with age.

Although the rates of diagnosis are rising, many dementia sufferers are still believed to be undetected.

IS THERE A CURE?

Currently, there is no cure for dementia.

But new drugs can slow down its progression and the earlier it is spotted, the more effective treatments can be.

WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS?

Osteoarthritis – sometimes called ‘wear and tear’ – is a condition that occurs when the surfaces within joints become damaged.

According to Versus Arthritis, the cartilage that covers the ends of bones gradually dwindles over time while the bone develops.

In the UK, about one-third of adults 45 and older have the disorder. This is roughly equivalent to 8.75 million individuals. In the US, there are at least 20 million known sufferers.

It differs from rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic condition in which the body attacks itself as a result of the immune system, leading to painful, swollen, and stiff joints.

Patients with osteoarthritis frequently require replacement joints because their damaged joints are so painful.
