WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT GREY’S ANATOMY SEASON 22! As the gripping season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy approaches on May 7, viewers brace for a dramatic bridge collapse that jeopardizes the lives of two central figures, including Dr. Nick Marsh, portrayed by Scott Speedman. Having first appeared as a guest in season 14, Speedman returned more regularly in season 18. Dr. Nick Marsh has since developed a romantic relationship with Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), residing together in Boston and making occasional appearances in the show.
In the upcoming episode titled “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” previews suggest that Nick may become a casualty of the Royer Bridge disaster, which also affects Dr. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd). Both Owen and his on-again, off-again partner, Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), are set to depart the series after this season. Despite this, show creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes has assured fans of a satisfying conclusion for the pair, hinting at Owen’s likely survival, as reported by Deadline.
This raises questions about Nick’s fate, especially given the show’s history of using large-scale tragedies to bid farewell to beloved characters. Moreover, with Speedman currently starring in ABC’s comedy-drama R.J. Decker, which awaits news of a second season renewal, there’s speculation that Nick’s time on Grey’s Anatomy could be drawing to a close if R.J. Decker is picked up for another season.
This could possibly mean that Nick won’t make it through the bridge collapse, if Grey’s Anatomy plans to continue its tradition of large-scale catastrophes taking characters’ lives. In addition, Speedman is currently the star of ABC’s comedy-drama series, R.J. Decker, which hasn’t been picked up for season 2 yet. Could an R.J. Decker renewal mean the end for Grey’s Anatomy’s Nick?
Grey’s Anatomy’s Scott Speedman Teases A Struggle Ahead For Dr. Nick Marsh
In an interview with People, Speedman stated that Nick is in a bad situation during the Grey’s Anatomy season 22 finale, but he couldn’t reveal too much information about his character’s fate. He said, “There’s a lot of things stacked against poor old Nick at this point. We’ll see. I don’t know. I can’t say anything.”
Speedman could be referring to the fact that Nick is a kidney transplant recipient, which could complicate any injuries he sustains in the bridge collapse. Any trauma to his body could put his life in severe danger.
Scott Speedman Enjoys Working On Grey’s Anatomy
Speedman also shared that he enjoys working on the long-running medical drama series, saying that it’s “always fun to go and be able to shoot Grey’s Anatomy.” He added, “I love doing this show. I love those people. So we’ll see what happens.” Although R.J. Decker hasn’t been renewed yet, Speedman is also hopeful that it will get the green light for season 2.
Speedman has been a wonderful addition to Grey’s Anatomy. His character, Nick, is an intelligent and caring doctor, but, most importantly, he’s allowed Meredith to open her heart to love again. It would be so tragic for him to lose his life to the bridge collapse. However, with Grey’s Anatomy’s track record of killing off beloved characters, especially the love interests of Meredith, including Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and Dr. Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), the odds seem to be stacked against him.
In addition, an R.J. Decker renewal could make it harder for Speedman to pull double duty on both shows. Hopefully, if Speedman does leave Grey’s Anatomy, it won’t be because Nick dies. It would be refreshing to see him survive the accident, and move on with his life off-screen if necessary. However, the perfect scenario would be that Speedman would be back on a recurring basis as Nick on Grey’s Anatomy, while also working full-time as the title character on R.J. Decker.
The Grey’s Anatomy season 22 finale airs on Thursday, May 7 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
