Spain’s Unbeaten Star with 49 Caps, Controversial Figure in Dallas, and Key Highlights as England Prepares for Argentina Showdown

0

Good morning and welcome to the World Cup Breakfast from Daily Mail Sport. We’re now on day 35 of the tournament, offering a comprehensive recap of everything you may have missed overnight from North America.

Stick with us to catch up on the latest developments, viral highlights, and upcoming events to keep on your radar.

OVERNIGHT NEWS

Spain’s head coach, Luis de la Fuente, is confident that his team is hitting their stride at the perfect moment following their impressive 2-0 victory against France in the semi-finals. After a goalless draw against Cape Verde in their first match, Spain has really found their rhythm, winning six matches, netting 13 goals from seven different players, and conceding just once. This pattern resembles their journey in the 2010 World Cup as well as Argentina’s in 2022, both of which ended in championship victories. So, peaking at the right time might just be their secret recipe for success.

In less cheerful news for Arsenal supporters, William Saliba has suffered an injury. He was forced to leave the game during the first half, with Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace stepping in as his replacement. Renowned French journalist Julien Laurens shared that Saliba remarked, ‘My back is gone, my back is gone,’ indicating potential concerns about his fitness.

Lastly, Thomas Tuchel, in a recent press briefing, expressed confidence in his ability to steer England to World Cup triumph, regardless of his modest playing background. Light-heartedly, he remarked, ‘You don’t have to be a horse to be a good jockey!’ Tuchel also addressed the media stir regarding his recent exchange with Jude Bellingham, assuring everyone that their relationship remains solid.

VIEW FROM THE GROUND

If the streets of Atlanta last night are anything to go by then England will be playing an effective away game today, for the right to go to the World Cup Final.

Everywhere you turned it seemed there were legions of fans in pale blue and white striped shirts. As I type this, from a Mexican downtown restaurant, the bloke at the side of me is wearing a knock-off Maradona 1986 Le Coq Sportif number.

Whether that scene is replicated in the stadium remains to be seen. The FA have sold around 8,000 tickets and there has been a huge support from Americans for Thomas Tuchel’s men. They have not, yet, faced Lionel Messi, however.

Tuchel and Lionel Scaloni faced the world’s media last night at the magnificent Mercedes Benz Stadium and were both singing from the same hymn sheet when it came to history and the Falklands War. Tuchel said he would not use history as ‘fuel’ for his players before sharing with the room that he was fuelling himself with ice cream and bike rides around parking lots. Scaloni also spoke well, adding that he would not mix football and politics.

Anyway, time for football. After France’s exit, England are one of the last three standing. Tomorrow, the American dream could become a reality. A first World Cup final since 1966 and a chance to avenge the Euros defeat at the hands of Spain.

Here we go.

TEAM OF THE DAY

Thanks to Sofascore for the graphic. Nine men for Spain, two for France. Ouch.

CELEBRITY WATCH

Not for the first time, David Beckham found himself handed premium tickets for a World Cup game.

The former England star – who spent four years in Spain playing for Real Madrid from 2003 to 2007 – attended alongside his wife Victoria.

Three of their kids were there, too: sons Cruz and Romeo, and daughter Harper. There was, of course, no sign of Brooklyn amid a family rift.

Four of Spain’s 2010 World Cup winners – Xavi, Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas, and Carles Puyol – looked on happily.

Meanwhile, former and current Olympic sprinting champions Usain Bolt and Noah Lyles sat next to each other. Once upon a time, Bolt may have harboured a faint hope of playing in the World Cup – he did, after all, have a short-lived football career which generated many headlines.

Elsewhere in the ground, Timothee Chalamet and Javier Bardem turned up from the acting world.

VIRAL MOMENT OF THE DAY

Was Gianni Infantino booed by thousands of people in the stadium?

It appeared that way, if you were watching the broadcast. Plenty of clips have been doing the rounds on social media, showing Gianni Infantino sat down and smiling awkwardly as a chorus of boos ring out.

ITV commentator Sam Matterface was at pains to clarify that the booing was actually for the owner of NFL team Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones, who appeared on the big screen in the stadium, supposedly at the same time.

PICTURE OF THE DAY

It’s the end of an era of French football with Deschamps stepping down and this photo encapsulates the differing directions as he and Mbappe – who he gave his France debut, World Cup debut and made captain – cut forlorn figures with at the full-time whistle.

During their time together, Mbappe has become their country’s all-time record goalscorer (64) and sits ninth in appearances (105). Even in the defeat by Spain, Mbappe made more history as he made his 21st World Cup outing for France – moving one clear of former goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. With the third-fourth play-off to come on Saturday he could extend it further.

STATS OF THE DAY

Spain are now unbeaten in 37 matches in all competitions, dating back to March 2024, when they lost 1-0 to Colombia. They’ve won 28 games and drawn nine in that time.

It’s the joint-longest unbeaten run by a European nation ever. Italy did the same between 2018 and 2021.

Meanwhile, midfielder Fabian Ruiz has now picked up 49 caps for Spain… and is yet to lose.

If England face them in the final, it’ll take something special to overthrow them.

THREE THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR

The glaringly obvious answer is the England vs Argentina match at 8pm UK time, so here are three more nuanced suggestions…

1) Is Declan Rice ready to play?

The current suggestions point to Declan Rice being well enough to play, but that could change over the course of the day.

He spent most of the three days prior to the Norway match in bed sick and came off at half-time. The Arsenal star picked up the bug in Mexico.

Rice has trained with his team-mates, but we don’t know if he is feeling 100 per cent. Will he still be under the weather? How has it been affecting other aspects like his appetite and sleep?

England’s only official absences are Jordan Henderson, who has had surgery on his left forearm after injuring it in the celebrations after the Mexico win, and Jarell Quansah, who is suspended after being sent off in the last-16 match.

2) How will the match be refereed?

It’s no secret by now that many teams and supporters are suspicious of the way Argentina’s matches have been handled by match officials.

Algeria, Austria, Egypt, and Switzerland all complained about the officiating after their matches against the 2022 champions, some of them very vehemently.

Any 50/50 decision that doesn’t go England’s way is naturally going to attract ire. Fans will be watching like hawks.

Ismail Elfath, has been appointed to oversee the encounter. Elfath was the fourth official for the 2022 World Cup final and has refereed him four times in the MLS, with Messi winning all of those.

Obviously, that’s more down to team performances than the officials, but the ‘Messi’s favourite referee’ tag doesn’t help…

3) Watch out for France!

At the time of writing, just past midnight in the United Kingdom, there are local media reports of disturbances in France after their defeat against Spain.

We know that hooligans in France, particularly Paris, will often trash the streets and shops after a victory. It usually isn’t as bad after a defeat, oddly enough, but emergency services have been on guard.

The CL Press Agency has showed police dispersing fans in Paris, while there have been violent clashes and at least four arrests in Lyon, according to Actu Lyon.

Shania Twain Misses Taylor Swift’s Wedding for a Prior Engagement with Harry Styles

Shania Twain recently disclosed she turned down an invitation to Taylor Swift‘s wedding, citing her connection with Swift’s former partner, Harry Styles, as the reason.

In an interview with ETalk, a Canadian entertainment platform, published on Tuesday, July 14, Twain, 60, expressed her regret: “I would have loved nothing more than to attend Taylor’s wedding. Being there would have been wonderful — but I had commitments with Harry.”

Twain was referring to her involvement in kicking off Styles’ series of 12 concerts at London’s Wembley Stadium, which coincided with Swift’s nuptials to Travis Kelce held on July 3 at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Reflecting on the invitation, the “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” singer explained, “Taylor asked me to her wedding, but I couldn’t make it due to my prior commitments to Harry’s concerts. If Harry ever ties the knot and wants me there, he’ll need to give me more notice.”

Taylor Swift Skips American Music Awards 2026 After Scoring Most Nominations

Even while absent, Taylor Swift celebrated her 2026 American Music Awards nominations, as the event proceeded without her presence. The pop icon, now 36, missed the Monday, May 25 awards show at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena. This year, Swift leads the nomination tally at the AMAs, bagging eight nods, including Artist of the Year.

As the ETalk host pointed out, Swift, 36, and Styles, 32, dated from 2012 to 2013, making Twain’s prior engagement all the more awkward. “It’s just kind of funny that it happened that way,” the country singer said in response.

Twain wasn’t the only celebrity to miss out on seeing Swift exchange vows with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, also 36, in a ceremony that attracted 1,000 of the couple’s closest family members and friends. Swift’s former bestie Blake Lively, as well as Margaret Qualley, the estranged wife of Swift’s musical collaborator Jack Antonoff, and Swift’s former pal Lorde did not attend the star-studded nuptials.

Those who did witness the pair, who began dating in the summer of 2023, tie the knot include Selena Gomez, Jessica Alba, Gigi Hadid, Hugh Grant, Karlie Kloss, Paul Rudd, Seth Meyers, Kelsea Ballerini, Maren Morris and more. On the groom’s side, Brittany and Patrick Mahomes, George Kittle, Kareem Hunt and other high-profile NFL players also joined the fun.

A source exclusively shared with Us Weekly three days after the ceremony that the venue was utterly transformed. “The entire wedding had an enchanted garden-inspired vibe,” the insider told Us before revealing that the wedding’s color palette was soft blush and light peach. “There was light peach drapery everywhere as you entered, blush and white florals, tons of lush greenery, huge trees and candlelight throughout.”

Explosive $176K Fine Hits Murdaugh Podcaster Mandy Matney for Ignoring Subpoena

0

In an intriguing turn, a South Carolina judge has held crime reporter and podcaster Mandy Matney in civil contempt, demanding she pay $171,500 in legal fees and costs, along with a $5,000 fine. The court ruled she intentionally disregarded a subpoena connected to the Murdaugh family legal proceedings.

Judge R. Keith Kelly issued a comprehensive 22-page order on Monday, which determined that Matney had willfully ignored both a valid subpoena and a prior court directive to attend a deposition. Her defense, citing safety concerns, was dismissed by the court.

The civil contempt ruling is part of ongoing legal battles stemming from the tragic 2019 boat accident that claimed Mallory Beach’s life. Parker’s convenience stores are among those accused of unlawfully selling alcohol to a minor, Paul Murdaugh, who was involved in the fatal incident. Matney was summoned as a witness in this case despite not being directly involved as a defendant.

Beach, 19, was killed in the February 2019 crash in Beaufort County. Paul Murdaugh was later charged with boating under the influence, but those charges were dismissed after he and his mother, Maggie Murdaugh, were fatally shot at the family’s Colleton County hunting estate in June 2021.

The Beach family’s civil lawsuit against members of the Murdaugh family and Parker’s alleges the convenience store chain illegally sold alcohol to the underage Paul Murdaugh before the crash. The litigation ultimately helped expose Alex Murdaugh’s finances as investigators uncovered the disgraced attorney’s financial crimes.

Kelly wrote that Matney refused to appear at the Bluffton deposition site on March 27 despite acknowledging she understood the court had denied her efforts to quash the subpoena and ordered the deposition to proceed. Instead, she remained at another law office in Bluffton while Parker’s attorneys waited at the noticed location.

The order notes Matney instead appeared by Zoom from another law office in Bluffton.

“Based upon the foregoing, there is clear and convincing evidence that Ms. Matney’s failure to appear was not the result of confusion, mistake, or inability, but rather was a deliberate decision to disregard the subpoena and the Court’s March 16, 2026 Order requiring that she be deposed within 14 days,” Kelly wrote.

Kelly also found Matney’s explanation that she feared for her safety was not credible, writing there was “no persuasive evidence” supporting her allegations that Parker’s attorneys were trying to harass her or place her in danger.

Kelly pointed to Matney’s social media posts after the aborted deposition, including photos showing her eating lemon pound cake with attorney Mark Tinsley and later dining in Savannah. The judge wrote the posts “evidence her intent to defy her obligation to appear at the noticed deposition location.”

Parker’s attorneys originally sought more than $310,000 in fees and costs, but Kelly reduced the award by nearly 45%, ordering Matney to pay $171,500, plus a $5,000 fine.

The court awarded $39,900 to Bannister, Wyatt and Stalvey, LLC; $45,950 to Deborah B. Barbier, LLC; and $85,650 to Maynard Nexsen, PC.

Matney criticized the ruling Monday in a Facebook post.

“I’m not angry that Judge R Keith Kelly found me in contempt of court. I’m angry that he’s ordering me to pay an unprecedented amount of legal fees ($171,000 + $5,000 in fines),” she wrote.

“The South Carolina Justice system is exactly what I’ve been saying all along — CORRUPT,” she added. “And this is my punishment for calling it like it is.”

Kelly wrote there was “no persuasive evidence” supporting Matney’s repeated allegations that Parker’s attorneys were using the deposition process to harass or bully her.

He also concluded the contempt proceedings resulted from Matney’s own conduct, writing that had she appeared for her deposition or accepted one of several alternate locations offered, “she would not be before the Court on a contempt motion.”

Maryland Bank Heist: Suspect Allegedly Uses Stolen Kitten in Unusual Robbery Attempt

0

Not every partner in crime gets to choose their role in a heist.

A man in Maryland is accused of stealing a three-month-old kitten from a pet store, carrying her into a nearby bank, and asking a bank employee to hold her. Moments later, he allegedly handed a note to a teller demanding money, according to police and a local cat rescue organization.

The kitten, named Magnolia, was discovered unharmed after police from Prince George’s County apprehended the suspect.

Following the incident, Beltsville Community Cats humorously remarked on Facebook that Magnolia’s “life of crime” had officially ended.

Despite her unexpected encounter with an attempted bank robbery, the young kitten, affectionately called a “true purr machine” by Beltsville Community Cats, remains in search of her forever home.

Security camera video obtained by NBC Washington shows a man wearing a light-colored T-shirt and black beanie entering Pet Supplies Plus on Baltimore Avenue before running out seconds later carrying the black-and-white tuxedo kitten.

Witnesses told the outlet the man ran directly to the nearby PNC Bank in the same shopping center.

Stephanie Stullich, with Beltsville Community Cats rescue, said she received a frantic phone call around 10:30 a.m. from pet store employees reporting Magnolia had been taken from the adoption area.

“I immediately saw all of these police cars, and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s a heck of a response for a stolen cat,’” Stullich told NBC Washington. “But then I realized they all were going down to the bank.”

According to Stullich, police officers later told her the suspect walked into the bank holding Magnolia before asking an employee, “Can you hold this?” He then allegedly handed a teller a note demanding cash.

Prince George’s County police confirmed they took a man into custody at the bank.

Pet Supplies Plus manager Aaron Kurkowski told NBC Washington the suspect had visited the store nearly every day for the past couple of weeks and routinely headed straight for Magnolia.

“He just went right to her and ran right on out,” Kurkowski said.

The rescue later posted on Facebook that Magnolia was recovered safely after the rescue said she bonded with the bank manager during the ordeal.

“The robbery was unsuccessful, the suspect was arrested, and Magnolia was found safe and sound,” the organization wrote.

The rescue said Magnolia remains available for adoption and describes the 3-month-old tuxedo kitten as affectionate and playful, adding that she loves cuddles, adventures and following her people around.

Because she’s so social and energetic, the group recommends she be adopted into a home with another young, playful cat or alongside one of its other cats.

“She’s looking for a law-abiding citizen with a lot of love in their heart,” Stullich told NBC Washington.

Oldest Inmate Executed in Florida’s History for 1982 Teen Murder

0

The family of an 18-year-old woman, tragically murdered after a New Year’s Eve celebration, revealed that the man responsible took the truth about her missing body to his grave. This revelation comes after his execution in Florida.

On Tuesday, 74-year-old Dennis Sochor was executed for the murder of Patricia Gifford, which occurred on January 1, 1982, just hours after their initial meeting. The execution, which involved a three-drug lethal injection, was carried out at Florida State Prison, with Sochor declared dead at 6:16 p.m.

Patricia’s sister, Marilyn Gifford, who witnessed the execution, expressed that while it provided the family with some closure, the absence of Patricia’s remains left it bittersweet.

Reading from a prepared statement, Gifford remarked, “For 45 years, he could have returned Patty’s remains to us, but instead, he cruelly chose to withhold them.”

“We were never able to lay her to rest in God’s arms,” she continued. “Without the closure we needed, every fond memory of Patty is swiftly overshadowed by the tragedy of her untimely death.”

Gifford also pointed out that Sochor spent more than twice as many years on death row as her sister was alive.

‘Tonight´s execution was appropriate because Dennis Sochor was a lifelong brutal and sadistic man,’ she said.

The mystery surrounding Patricia’s body has remained unresolved for 44 years, with her sister telling the South Florida Sun Sentinel before his execution: ‘Even with the death penalty, he lived twice as long on death row as Patty ever lived at all.’

The killer’s own brother testified that Sochor, who was 29 at the time, raped and killed Patricia before hiding her body.

‘He has, multiple times, told law enforcement, and also told me, that he was too drunk to remember where the body is,’ Jeff Hood, an anti-death penalty advocate who has met with Sochor as a spiritual adviser, told the outlet.

‘He has been unable to remember,’ he added. ‘He wants people to know that if he could help locate the body, he, of course, would.’

Sochor’s brother Gary also testified under oath that he believed Sochor was ‘demon-possessed’ when he attacked and raped Patricia and said he didn’t know where her body was.

In an interview with the Sun Sentinel earlier this month, Patricia’s sister questioned the sincerity of Sochor’s claims that he wanted to help police find her body.

‘I don’t believe him for a second,’ Marilyn told the outlet.

She said his supposed willingness to help was strikingly similar to his brother’s own efforts after Sochor was arrested and charged with murder in 1986.

‘He knows damn well where she is,’ she said. ‘I don’t believe him for a second. He’s a liar. He’s a murderer. He’s a brutal killer whose word cannot be trusted.’

In Sochor's final statement, he repeatedly apologized to the Gifford family, saying he was 'deeply sorry' and expressed gratitude to his own loved ones for standing by him

Marilyn said Sochor’s death meant the secret her sister’s remains would die with him, leaving her family without the answers they had spent decades waiting for.

With an IV in his arm and strapped to a gurney, Sochor watched as the curtain to the death chamber opened. Asked by the warden if he had any last words, he answered that he did.

In his final statement, he repeatedly apologized to the Gifford family, saying he was ‘deeply sorry’ and expressed gratitude to his own loved ones for standing by him.

He then commended his spirit to Jesus Christ shortly before the lethal drugs began flowing at 6.03pm. Sochor breathed heavily for roughly a minute and briefly sputtered before becoming still.

After about two minutes without movement, the warden looked into his eyes, shook his shoulders and called his name. A medic was then summoned, and Sochor was officially pronounced dead.

Patricia was celebrating the New Year with a friend at the Banana Boat lounge in Fort Lauderdale when she met Sochor and his brother.

She was later supposed to meet her boyfriend, chef Johnny Vasel, who was working a nearby hotel party, according to the Sun Sentinel.

The group spent hours talking before Patricia’s friend became ill and went to sleep in her car. Investigators said she then left with Sochor and his brother to get breakfast, but he instead drove to a secluded area and attacked her.

According to authorities, his brother told police that Sochor was responsible for Gifford’s disappearance, and Sochor later confessed on tape to choking her and disposing of her body.

In 1986, Sochor was arrested in Georgia on unrelated charges and later extradited to Florida. A jury convicted him of first-degree murder and kidnapping in 1987, sending him to death row.

His last legal challenge ended Tuesday when the US Supreme Court rejected his final appeal without comment.

Florida executed another 74-year-old inmate just last month, only a week younger than Sochor. Now, the state is preparing to execute an 80-year-old later this month, a first for Florida.

The back-to-back executions highlight the growing age of death row inmates and Florida’s unusually active death chamber. The state has carried out 10 of the 16 executions nationwide this year – more than every other state combined.

It remains unclear why the Sunshine State scheduled the three executions within the span of a month.

Maria DeLiberato, legal director of Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, said Florida’s governor has broad authority to set execution dates, while courts typically handle that role in many other states.

On June 25, Florida executed 74-year-old Dusty Ray Spencer for the killing of his wife, Karen. Until Tuesday’s execution, Spencer was the oldest inmate put to death in the state.

Meanwhile, Dominick Anthony Occhicone, 80, is scheduled to be executed on July 28 for the killings of his ex-girlfriend’s parents. Governor Ron DeSantis signed his death warrant late last month.

Occhicone was sentenced to death in 1987 for fatally shooting Raymond and Martha Artzner at their home, just months after their daughter called off the engagement.

Florida executed another 74-year-old inmate last month, only a week younger than Sochor. Now, the state is preparing to execute an 80-year-old later this month

His legal team filed a motion in Pasco County last week in an attempt to stop his execution, arguing that his advanced age and poor health should spare him, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

They argued that, over the past 39 years, Occhicone has rarely slept more than three hours at a time each night and now suffers from poor vision and hearing loss, requiring the use of a hearing aid.

According to court documents, he has declining renal function, kidney disease and cysts on one of his kidneys. His attorneys also claimed that their client has a blocked artery and suffers from irregular heart rhythms.

His defense argued that carrying out executions places a significant mental burden on prison staff, urging the judge to impose a six-month moratorium on all state executions.

If executed as scheduled, Occhicone would become the second-oldest person executed in modern US history, behind Walter Moody Jr, who was put to death in Alabama in 2018 at age 83 for killing a federal judge and a black civil rights attorney in mail bomb attacks.

Explore Atlanta’s Rich Soccer Legacy at Emory’s ‘Footwork’ Exhibit Before the 2026 FIFA World Cup

ATLANTA (WJBF) – As the city of Atlanta gears up for its last FIFA World Cup match of this tournament, featuring a thrilling semifinal clash between England and Argentina, Emory University is shining a spotlight on the depth of Atlanta’s soccer scene. They are doing so with a series of captivating exhibitions that celebrate how the sport has shaped the culture and communities of the city.

Named the “Footwork” exhibitions, these displays at Emory University are available for viewing until Sunday. They delve into Atlanta’s soccer history, tracing the journey from the very first professional team formed in the 1960s to its evolution into a bustling hub for soccer enthusiasts worldwide.

This immersive experience blends elements of sports, culture, fashion, health, and community, offering a rich tapestry of historic artifacts, photography, memorabilia, and engaging interactive displays.

“The World Cup has everyone coming together, each with their own favorite team,” remarked Clinton Fluker, who is the senior director of culture, community, and partner engagement at Emory Libraries. “Visitors aren’t just here for a history lesson. They’re eager to be part of the evolving story and leave their own mark on it.”

A key highlight of the exhibition is the narrative of the Atlanta Chiefs, the city’s pioneering professional soccer team that began its journey in the 1960s.

Emory said the Chiefs helped create the foundation for Atlanta’s soccer culture at a pivotal time in the city’s history.

Fluker said the team initially started as a way to bring more events to the former Braves stadium, but it eventually became much more.

“What it ended up doing was becoming a place for us to gather together and create a soccer culture within the city that we didn’t previously have,” Fluker said.

The exhibit also explores how soccer helped bring communities together during the Civil Rights Era. The Atlanta Chiefs won their first national championship in 1968, the same year Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.

“This was a particularly interesting time for the United States and for Atlanta in particular, when the civil rights movement was at its height,” Fluker said. “This is also a time where we’re trying to figure out how do we bring people together.”

The “Footwork” exhibitions highlight the evolution of soccer beyond the field, including the connection between the sport and fashion through Adidas archive pieces and the development of soccer sneakers.

Visitors can also explore historic photos, World Cup artifacts, and displays focused on soccer medicine and the role of sports in health and wellness.

The exhibits are a partnership involving Emory University, Atlanta United, and Adidas.

Organizers said the goal is to celebrate Atlanta’s past while building excitement for the city’s role as a host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The “Footwork” exhibitions are free and open to the public through Sunday at Emory University.

Tragic Turn: Man Ends Mother’s Life After Failed Suicide Attempt, Police Report

In New Mexico, a tragic incident led to the death of a mother and resulted in her son being incarcerated, as reported by local authorities from the Land of Enchantment.

Las Cruces Police Department has charged 32-year-old Lawrence Lopez with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the demise of his 58-year-old mother, Tina Lucero.

The incident unfolded on the evening of July 1 at the family residence along Los Ranchitos Road in Las Cruces, a city nestled between White Sands National Park and El Paso, Texas.

On that evening, Lopez had dinner with his mother, according to police records acquired by El Paso’s Fox affiliate KFOX.

Other family members were also in attendance at the meal, according to law enforcement. The defendant allegedly relayed a series of paranoid beliefs, such as that he was being followed by vehicles and drones and that his phone had been hacked, law enforcement said.

After dinner and home by themselves, Lopez allegedly doubled down on his beliefs — with added concern that he felt his mother was not taking him seriously, according to the charging document.

Eventually, Lopez said he felt like dying, pulled out a gun, aimed it at his head and taunted his mother with the prospect of having to live with the image and knowledge of his would-be suicide, according to investigators who later spoke with the defendant, police said.

“I’m gonna make you remember this for the rest of your life,” the son allegedly told his mother. “You gotta see me shoot myself.”

After those comments, the mother leaped into action and went for the gun to disarm her son, the defendant allegedly told investigators. During the ensuing struggle, the gun went off, police said.

The bullet went through Lopez’s left hand and into his mother’s chest, according to law enforcement. The defendant himself then called 911 and his brother. The defendant’s sibling rushed over to the residence to perform CPR on their mother, but Lucero was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Lopez was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for his gunshot wound and then released before being arrested.

The defendant is being detained in the Dona Ana County Detention Center with no bond, jail records show.

Florida Reacts Dividedly to Proposed Permanent Daylight Saving Time Bill

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill that could eliminate the biannual clock changes by making daylight saving time permanent. This legislation has received support across party lines and allows states to decide if they wish to adopt this change. In Florida, numerous lawmakers are eager to stop adjusting the clocks twice a year.

“Everyone’s out enjoying the outdoors,” remarked a man strolling along Tampa’s Riverwalk.

He mentioned that these are the moments when he values daylight saving time the most.

“We spent some time living in Hawaii, where they don’t observe daylight saving time, and it was fantastic,” said a family passing by.

If the Senate approves, the rest of the county could see daylight saving time become permanent. The U.S. House passed the Sunshine Protection Act Tuesday. The final vote was 308-117. Before the vote, Pennsylvania Congresswoman Madeleine Dean gave examples from out of Florida on why she’s against the bill.

“The policy was popular until parents realized their children had to travel to school in darkness, armed with flashlights. After eight Florida children were killed in traffic accidents, the governor called on Congress to end the two-year experiment early. Over 50 years later, we’re making the same mistake again,” Dean said.

One woman said she prefers making the switch.

“I like ‘Fall Back’ because I live in one of these high rises and it wakes me up earlier to take her out,” she said, referencing her dog.

Though some people said they are indifferent on the topic.

“I’ll be honest with you; it doesn’t really matter. Yeah, because we got to get our 8 hours of sleep anyway,” said one man.

Tampa Bay Congressman Vern Buchanan has advocated for permanent daylight saving time for years. He told 8 On Your Side he thinks we’re close to it happening.

“There’s a lot of enormous benefits, specially in terms of if you look at the economy, get an extra hour of sunshine in Florida. That means more jobs, more opportunities for small businesses,” Buchanan said.

Time won’t stop regardless of how the Senate votes. But changing the clock twice a year could stop, and some say they like it better that way.

“This is good. Like, people get off work. There are a few hours, the sun goes down. It’s just like what really works with most people’s lives,” said one man.

The Senate voted to make daylight saving time permanent back in 2022, but that bill never passed in the house. Another version introduced by Florida U.S. Senator Rick Scott last year never made it to a vote. Tuesday, both Senators Scott and Ashley Moody said they want to lock the clock.

Tragic Incident Near Alcatraz: 1 Dead, 3 Missing After Family-Loaded Boat Capsizes

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A tragic incident unfolded off the coast of San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon, when a pontoon boat carrying mostly family members as part of a memorial service sank. This accident resulted in one fatality, three missing persons, and the successful rescue of 16 individuals.

When crews reached the area near Alcatraz Island, they encountered a troubling sight: a three-deck pontoon vessel almost completely submerged. The boat’s motor was still running and leaking fuel, according to San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen.

By Tuesday evening, a vigorous search was underway for the missing, extending into the open ocean west of the Golden Gate Bridge. The operation, involving divers, helicopters, and various vessels, was slated to continue through the night, officials mentioned.

Initially, authorities reported two individuals missing, but after receiving additional witness information, this number was updated to three.

“We are currently in full rescue mode,” Crispen stated, noting that three individuals who sustained injuries from falling overboard had been hospitalized but were anticipated to be discharged by Tuesday night.

Alcatraz Island, once a federal prison infamously inescapable due to the strong ocean currents and cold Pacific waters that surround it, is now a tourist destination. It is located in San Francisco Bay about a mile (about 1.6 kilometers) north of the city’s shoreline, in an often windy area that attracts sailboats and other recreational vessels.

Videos of the scene showed boats deployed to rescue people who had been on the vessel, which was largely submerged with objects floating nearby.

The boating mishap was initially reported as a fire, “but we now don’t have any evidence of that,” Crispen said.

The person who died was alive when plucked from the frigid waters by rescue crews but later died. A dog onboard also died.

All those rescued were taken to Gashouse Cove Marina, a small craft harbor in San Francisco.

Aaron Anfinson, captain of the Bass-Tub, told the San Francisco Chronicle his boat was carrying guests toward the Golden Gate Bridge in “pretty windy, a little choppy” waters when a man on a smaller vessel flagged them down and pointed to a pontoon boat in the middle of the bay that appeared to be on fire.

By the time the Bass-Tub reached it, the flames were out, but the pontoon was sinking. Some people were already in the water while others remained aboard, Anfinson said, adding that they tried to hand out life jackets to the passengers.

One woman’s head was injured.

“We figured we would get her first,” Anfinson said. A deckhand lowered a swim ladder and threw a life ring into the water to help pull her aboard.

“It was scary,” Anfinson said. “I don’t want to see anybody in that situation.”

Fire Lt. Mariano Elias said the vessel, described as a “pontoon pleasure boat,” was about 600 yards (about 550 meters) from Alcatraz and the emergency call came in just after 3:30 p.m.

Crispen said the vessel was believed to have launched near the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. A person who answered the phone there said the club did not have any information on what happened.

Live video from the scene showed a man and a woman wrapped in blankets and sitting on a curb before walking to a nearby ambulance. A yellow tarp covered a body on the dock.

The Coast Guard and Oakland police also helped in the rescue, Elias said.

Snapchat Tattoo Leads to Arrest of New Jersey Woman for Child Abuse

A distinctive tattoo spotted in a distressing Snapchat video led authorities to a New Jersey woman, now charged with the sexual abuse of a child in her care. This crucial identification sprang the investigation into motion, alerting law enforcement to a troubling case.

Victoria Anne Cranmer has been charged with multiple offenses, including second-degree sexual assault, second-degree production of child sexual abuse material, third-degree endangerment of a child’s welfare, and third-degree possession of child sexual abuse material, according to court documents accessed by Jersey Shore Online.

The investigation commenced on May 20, spearheaded by Little Egg Harbor Police alongside the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit. They were alerted by the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency, according to court records seen by the publication.

Initially, investigators spoke with a woman identified as Ms. H, who discovered a video allegedly showing her young son inappropriately touching Cranmer’s exposed genitals, as court records detail. It was noted by police that Cranmer provided babysitting services for Ms. H’s son, as well as the daughter of another woman, Ms. P.

The affidavit, supported by information from NJ.com, revealed further context: Cranmer resided with Ms. P, who had gifted the 25-year-old an iPhone for her birthday in April. This gift unwittingly became a linchpin in uncovering the alarming video evidence.

When the pair had a falling out Cranmer moved out and Ms. P told investigators that she’d asked for the phone back.

While looking through the device, Ms. P allegedly discovered a 14-second video saved in Cranmer’s Snapchat memories that showed a child being sexually abused, authorities said.

Ms. P was able to identify the woman in the video as Cranmer because of a distinctive tattoo on her leg of “boobs, a lightning bolt and a mushroom,” police noted in the affidavit.

The witness saved the video and then handed the device over to police, who obtained a search warrant and uncovered more Snapchat videos of Cranmer with the child, according to the court records.

In one video, per the affidavit, Cranmer was allegedly sitting on a toilet with her genitals exposed as a child touched her. The video also showed her laughing and talking with the child, police said.

Cranmer was arrested and taken to the Ocean County Jail, where she’s currently being held without bond, according to jail records reviewed by Oxygen.

Her next court hearing is scheduled for July 14. Its unclear whether she has retained an attorney.
