Texas Court Upholds Law Mandating Ten Commandments Display in Public School Classrooms

0

In a significant ruling, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has decided that Texas is permitted to mandate the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms. This decision marks a triumph for conservatives advocating for a greater presence of religious elements in educational settings.

The court’s 9-8 verdict has also provided momentum for similar legislative efforts in states like Arkansas and Louisiana. Critics of the measure argue that posting the Ten Commandments in schools constitutes an attempt to promote religious beliefs among students, effectively turning it into state-sponsored religious indoctrination.

However, the appeals court, with a conservative majority based in New Orleans, dismissed these objections. The court’s opinion stated that requiring the display does not infringe upon the rights of students or their parents.

“Students are not compelled to recite, accept, or acknowledge the divine origins of the Commandments,” the ruling clarified.

In response, the American Civil Liberties Union and other advocacy groups, representing the interests of parents opposing the Texas law, expressed their intention to challenge the ruling at the U.S. Supreme Court level.

“The First Amendment safeguards the separation of church and state, and the freedom of families to choose how, when and if to provide their children with religious instruction. This decision tramples those rights,” they said in the statement.

The mandate is one of several fronts in Texas that opponents have fought over religion in classrooms. In 2024, the state approved optional Bible-infused curriculum for elementary schools, and a proposal set for a vote in June would add Bible stories to required reading lists in Texas classrooms.

The decision over the Ten Commandments law reverses a lower federal court ruling that had blocked about a dozen Texas school districts — including some of the state’s largest — from putting up the posters. The Texas law signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott took effect in September, marking the largest attempt in the nation to hang the Ten Commandments in public schools.

From the start, the law was met almost immediately by a mix of embrace and hesitation in Texas classrooms that educate the state’s 5.5 million public school students.

The mandate animated school board meetings, spun up guidance about what to say when students ask questions, and led to boxes of donated posters being dropped on the doorsteps of campuses statewide. Although the law only requires schools to hang the posters if donated, one suburban Dallas school district spent nearly $1,800 to print roughly 5,000 posters.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican, called the ruling “a major victory for Texas and our moral values.”

“The Ten Commandments have had a profound impact on our nation, and it’s important that students learn from them every single day,” he said.

Tuesday’s ruling comes after the appeals court heard arguments in January in the Texas case and a similar case in Louisiana. In February, the court cleared the way for Louisiana to enforce its law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in classrooms.

Republican Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said the Texas ruling “adopted our entire legal defense” of the law in her state. In Alabama, Republican Gov. Kay Ivey also signed a similar law earlier this month.

“Our law clearly was always constitutional, and I am grateful that the Fifth Circuit has now definitively agreed with us,” Murrill said in a statement posted to social media.

Judge Stephen A. Higginson, in a dissenting opinion joined by four others on the court, wrote that the framers of the Constitution “intended disestablishment of religion, above all to prevent large religious sects from using political power to impose their religion on others.”

“Yet Texas, like Louisiana, seeks to do just that, legislating that specific, politically chosen scripture be installed in every public-school classroom,” Higginson wrote.

The law says schools must put donated posters “in a conspicuous place” and requires the writing to be a size and typeface that is visible from anywhere in a classroom to a person with “average vision.” The displays must also be 16 inches wide and 20 inches tall (40 centimeters wide and 50 centimeters tall).

Texas’ law easily passed the GOP-controlled Legislature and Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have backed posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms.

Navy Veteran Accused in Atlanta Shooting Spree Found Dead in Jail: Investigation Underway

ATLANTA (AP) — A suspect linked to a series of deadly shootings in the Atlanta area, which claimed the lives of three individuals, including a Homeland Security employee out walking her dog, was found dead in jail on Tuesday night, according to authorities.

Olaolukitan Adon Abel, aged 26, was discovered unresponsive in his jail cell, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reported. Despite emergency efforts to revive the U.S. Navy veteran, he was declared deceased shortly thereafter.

While the exact cause of death is still under investigation, the sheriff’s office indicated that foul play is not suspected, and an internal review is underway.

Adon Abel faced charges in the murders of Prianna Weathers, 31, and Lauren Bullis, 40, a DHS auditor, in last week’s violent incidents. Authorities had been preparing to add a murder charge for Tony Mathews, 49, who succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

The motive behind the shootings remains a mystery, and it is unclear whether Adon Abel had any prior connection to the victims. Police have suggested that at least one of the attacks might have been random.

Adon Abel’s roommates told The Associated Press that shortly before the shootings, he got in an intense argument over the air conditioning in their home and stormed out. He lived with six others in separate units of the home.

The United Kingdom native was granted U.S. citizenship in 2022 while serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed in the San Diego area.

The attacks quickly drew the Trump administration’s attention, with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin raising concern that Adon Abel was granted U.S. citizenship when Democrat Joe Biden was president. Mullin cataloged a litany of Adon Abel’s previous alleged crimes, but it is unclear whether any of them occurred before he became a citizen.

Prince Harry Honors Late Queen with Discreet Tribute During Centenary Celebrations

0

Prince Harry quietly honored the memory of his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, by arranging for a wreath to be placed at her gravesite, commemorating what would have been her 100th birthday. This gesture was reported by People magazine, which is known to have close ties to the Duke of Sussex.

The floral tribute was laid at St George’s Chapel within Windsor Castle, where the Queen was laid to rest following her passing in 2022. Her final resting place in the King George VI Memorial Chapel is shared with her husband, Prince Philip, as well as her father, George VI, her mother, the Queen Mother, and her sister, Princess Margaret.

While Prince Harry remained in California, senior members of the Royal Family, led by King Charles and Queen Camilla, gathered at Buckingham Palace to pay their respects and celebrate the Queen’s legacy.

This act of remembrance by Prince Harry follows a similar tribute he paid last August to honor Prince Philip. On the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, he discreetly left a personal letter at the National Memorial Arboretum.

It comes after the Duke paid tribute to Philip last August in a personal letter left secretly at the National Memorial Arboretum on the 80th anniversary of VJ Day.

Harry asked a friend to discreetly leave the note and a wreath of red poppies for his late grandfather at the Burma Star Memorial in Staffordshire, following the national commemorations attended by the King and Queen earlier the same day.

But one friend of the Royal Family told the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden at the time: ‘What hypocrisy. Harry hurt his grandfather deeply during the final year of his life.’

The letter was said to have been placed after Charles and Camilla left to avoid distracting from the service which honoured the sacrifice of Second World War heroes who fought and died in the Pacific and Far East.

In 2020, the year of Megxit, former soldier Harry was left saddened when he was refused his wish to have a poppy wreath placed at the Cenotaph, the focus of the UK’s Remembrance Sunday service, on his behalf.

Just months later, the Duke, who undertook two tours to Afghanistan, was stripped of his military patronages by Elizabeth II after his decision to step down as a senior working royal was made permanent.

Since Elizabeth II’s death on September 8, 2022, Harry has returned to her burial site in Windsor on two occasions – including on the first anniversary in 2023.

The Duke also paid his respects last year, when he was in the UK for the WellChild awards and met his father Charles for the first time in more than a year.

At yesterday’s palace reception, the King was accompanied by all the working royals in honour of what would have been his late mother’s 100th birthday.

Joining the King and Queen were the Prince and Princess of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Princess Royal, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and even the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra – aged 90 and 89 respectively.

The reception was a celebration of Elizabeth II’s life and legacy, as guests from 45 of the patronages she supported were also present for the occasion.

Meanwhile, Harry returned to Montecito last week after he and Meghan toured Australia during a four-day visit that drew large crowds of supporters – as well as fierce criticism.

The Sussexes were accused of using their royal links to cash in on Australia as they carried out a mix of charity and business engagements during their time Down Under.

In Sydney, Meghan was the headlining guest at a ‘women-only’ retreat that some fans shelled out as much as £1,700 to attend.

During a VIP meet-and-greet with these superfans, Meghan asked if it was finally time to invest in herself after spending ‘all her life investing in women’.

The Duchess also told the crowd her experience in the public eye had been ‘very difficult’ but that people’s criticism of her had to do with their own ‘projections’.

She said the last decade, during which she celebrated happy moments such as her wedding and the birth of her two children, had been tainted by the vicious attacks.

Critics suggested Harry and Meghan were using Australia ‘like an ATM’ and that the ‘quasi royal tour’ was an extensive exercise in ‘self promotion’.

Since returning to Los Angeles, Meghan has announced the launch of two new candles inspired by the couple’s children – with the Duchess of Sussex using their royal links to promote the ‘Mother’s Day Edit’.

The marketing materials for the two candles mention Archie and Lilibet’s royal titles, as Meghan unveiled Signature Candle No. 506, named after her son’s birthdate of May 6, and Signature Candle No. 604, an homage to Princess Lilibet’s June 4 birthday.

Illinois Legislature Advances Bill Addressing ‘Forever Chemicals

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — In a decisive move, the Illinois Senate has nearly unanimously approved a bill designed to curb the release of PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals,” into the state’s wastewater systems.

Jen Walling, who leads the Illinois Environmental Council, explained that PFAS—an acronym for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances—are prevalent in consumer products such as clothing, food packaging, and non-stick cookware. These chemicals are associated with various types of cancer and are notoriously slow to decompose in the human body due to their stable fluorinated carbon bonds, earning them the nickname “forever chemicals.”

Senate Bill 3917 outlines a requirement for all wastewater treatment facilities to conduct regular testing for PFAS in their biosolids and both incoming and outgoing water. Additionally, should the bill become law, industrial facilities would be mandated to test their wastewater for these persistent chemicals.

Gardening Expert Daisy Payne Announces First Pregnancy, Playfully Describes It as a Unique Growth Experience

This Morning’s beloved gardener, Daisy Payne, has delighted fans with the news that she is expecting her first child. On Monday, Daisy took to Instagram to share a heartwarming video of herself gently caressing her growing baby bump.

At 28, the television personality humorously remarked that this year has brought “a different kind of growing” for her. She shared the news while posing in her picturesque garden, adding a touch of charm to her announcement.

Daisy, looking radiant in a flowing white linen dress, and her partner, producer Dominic Gatt, are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their baby in August.

In her post, Daisy expressed her excitement: “It’s been a different kind of growing for me this year! Baby on board, due at the end of August #pregnant #pregnancyjourney #babyontheway.”

Her colleagues from This Morning, including the likes of Josie Gibson and Alice Beer, were quick to flood her with heartfelt congratulations, celebrating this joyous milestone in her life.

Daisy was snapped up by This Morning in 2020, a year after she bought a Grade II-listed cottage in the Cotswolds and created Garden to Garnish tutorials for her YouTube channel.

In May 2023, Daisy opened up about how gardening helped her navigate the grief of her grandad, who died from COVID-19, and her grandmother.

She recalled to HELLO! magazine: ‘When my mum phoned me to tell me he had tested positive, I was walking Ernie, my cocker spaniel.

‘I fell to my knees. We knew the inevitable would happen, and there was absolutely nothing we could do about it. The lack of control and the utter devastation was hideous, so I turned to the garden to find solace.

‘The day he died, a little bird flew into my garden (we had never had robins in the garden before), and I knew he was out there with me.

‘In an instant, the garden felt even more special than it had before. Gardening helped me manage grief – and I choose the word ‘manage’ purposefully.’

It comes after Friends star Lisa Kudrow appeared on This Morning last week.

The sitcom legend, 62, admitted the one fan request that ‘irritates’ her – while opening up about the emotion of returning to the iconic sitcom’s set.

Lisa, who portrayed Phoebe Buffay throughout Friends’ entire 10-season run, revealed how fans still ask her to sing Phoebe’s song ‘Smelly Cat’.

It came as host Alison Hammond, 51, persuaded Lisa to perform a duet of this song live on the ITV programme.

Alison asked: ‘Are you sick of singing it? Do people say that to you all the time when they come up to you?’

To which Lisa responded: ‘They sometimes do. To me, though, not here, but just in life, at a restaurant, demanding that I sing it, it irritates me a little bit.’

Elsewhere in the interview, Lisa also discussed returning to the legendary soundstage where Friends was filmed.

This came about during shooting for her HBO sitcom The Comeback, which recently began its third series.

‘Because that is where, you know, I spent nine years, first year we were on another stage, and said goodbye to Friends.

‘And then the reunion was shot there. And now the end of The Comeback.’

She added: ‘And my son is there’, noting how son Julian makes an appearance in The Comeback.

Lisa went on: ‘He was there, and he was a baby till five, you know, visiting and there he is acting in it. It was a little overwhelming.’

Continuing, the actress told Dermot and Alison how she ‘barely got through shooting the last scene’ and ‘had to step out and take a walk around’.

She also snapped a photo of prolific TV director Jimmy Burrows – who helmed many episodes of Friends – and sent it to her fellow cast members.

Lisa remarked: ‘Jennifer wrote back, “Oh, what’s my call time?”‘, laughing.

Teen Defendant Denies Charges in Anna Kepner’s Cruise Ship Death Case

0

Last year, an 18-year-old named Anna Kepner was discovered lifeless by a housekeeper beneath the bed in her cabin on a cruise ship.

MIAMI — A 16-year-old male, charged with the suspected murder and aggravated sexual assault of his 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner, entered a plea of not guilty on Tuesday. The incident took place on a cruise ship last year.

Timothy Hudson, the accused, has been formally indicted and has opted to waive his presence at the arraignment set for Wednesday, according to his defense lawyer, Eric Cohen. Hudson, who is 16, also endorsed the one-page legal document.

This story continues below.

A grand jury concluded that Hudson was on board the Carnival Cruise Line’s Horizon vessel with his stepsister, Anna Kepner, in November 2025. Prosecutors claim that during their time on the ship, Hudson sexually assaulted and deliberately murdered her.

Initially facing charges as a minor in February, the case was kept confidential until a federal judge’s decision led to Hudson being tried as an adult. A conviction on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault could result in a life sentence for him.

Ahead of submitting a plea Tuesday, the public defender representing Hudson filed a motion asking the court to deny the prosecutor’s request to revoke his pretrial release now that he’s been indicted as an adult.

Hudson has been free in the care of an uncle since his arrest in February, though prosecutors now want a judge to lock him up while the case unfolds. That issue is unsettled.

The 18-year-old high school cheerleader from Titusville, Florida, was found dead while aboard the Carnival Horizon cruise ship. Law enforcement sources told multiple media outlets Kepner’s body was found by a housekeeper under the bed in her stateroom on the ship, which returned to Port Miami on Nov. 8, 2025.

ABC News reported that Kepner died by asphyxiation resulting from a bar hold, a term for holding an arm across the neck. The media outlet also reported investigators found two bruises on the side of her neck.

Her family previously told ABC News they wanted Kepner to be remembered for her generosity and spirit.

Records and hearings in the case were closed to the public for weeks because Hudson was initially charged as a minor. But U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom granted the government’s request to have him prosecuted as an adult. The case was unsealed on April 10.

Luxury Homes in Leafy Suburbs Targeted by Burglars: Rise in Smash-and-Grab Incidents Alarms Residents

0

In recent times, Los Angeles County has been grappling with a disturbing rise in residential burglaries, a trend that has left communities on edge and forced a reevaluation of policing strategies. In response, city officials are ramping up efforts to combat this surge, reassuring residents of a serious crackdown on such crimes.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has taken a decisive step by instructing the LAPD to bolster their presence along Ventura Boulevard. This move comes after a particularly noticeable spike in break-ins in areas like Sherman Oaks, Encino, and North Hollywood, where the community’s sense of safety has been noticeably shaken.

Emphasizing her commitment to public safety, Mayor Bass stated, “The safety of every Angeleno is my number one priority. The City has zero tolerance for these recent burglaries. Residents deserve to feel safe in their communities, especially in their homes, and we will continue to deploy the resources necessary to keep people safe.” Her message is clear: the city will not stand idly by as its neighborhoods are threatened.

The latest incident, which underscores the urgency of the situation, occurred in the early hours of Tuesday. As reported by the police, suspects targeted a home on Noble Avenue in Sherman Oaks around 1:30 a.m., attempting to gain entry by breaking a rear window. However, their plans were thwarted when they discovered the residents were home, prompting the burglars to flee. This incident was further detailed by investigators in a report to FOX 11 Los Angeles.

Police respond to LA home targeted in overnight burglary attempt

In these challenging times, a police car stationed outside a Sherman Oaks residence serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat. The visible law enforcement presence, captured by RMG NEWS, seeks to deter further criminal activity while reassuring residents of their safety.

Authorities say the attempted break-in is part of a broader spike in crimes that began around April 10, echoing similar burglary patterns seen in the San Fernando Valley in recent years. It remains unclear whether the incidents are connected or the work of an organized crew targeting specific neighborhoods.

The renewed surge comes despite similar concerns raised by residents in 2025, when the LAPD announced an intensified crime suppression strategy in Encino following a string of violent incidents and home burglaries.

At the time, officials emphasized that even as overall crime statistics showed a decline, the impact of targeted crimes like break-ins continued to fuel fear in affected communities.

“Our hearts go out to the families grieving this senseless loss of life,” LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said in 2025. “We understand that while crime may be statistically down, the fear and pain it causes is deeply personal—and very real.”

The department rolled out what it described as an “all-hands-on-deck” approach, increasing patrol visibility during overnight hours, deploying air support and license plate reader technology, and working with regional task forces to target organized burglary crews. Community outreach efforts and neighborhood engagement were also expanded in an effort to reassure residents.

Now, many of those same tactics are being deployed again.

In response to the latest spike, the LAPD’s Operations-Valley Bureau has ramped up enforcement, increasing patrols and placing a visible police presence in areas hit hardest by the crimes, FOX 11 reported. Officers are using mobile license plate readers in high-risk locations, deploying air support, and coordinating across specialized divisions to track and arrest suspects believed to be involved in high-value burglaries.

City leaders have underscored a zero-tolerance approach as pressure builds to stop what some residents describe as crimes happening “night after night.”

“There is zero tolerance for what has been happening in the Valley,” officials told FOX 11, adding that resources are being increased to apprehend those responsible.

Despite the increased police presence, many residents say the burglaries have continued, fueling concern and prompting some communities to organize their own response.

In North Hollywood, neighbors have banded together after a series of break-ins hit homes across the area and surrounding neighborhoods including Sylmar, Valley Village, Valley Glen and Toluca Lake. In one recent case, burglars entered a home through a second-story balcony and stole cash and valuables, according to police.

“It’s very nice to have a community. We look out for each other. It’s very important right now,” resident Karin Gault told CBS Los Angeles.

For some, routine activities have taken on a new purpose, with neighbors turning nightly dog walks into informal neighborhood watch patrols.

“It’s just really disturbing, because there’s been so many,” Gault said.

Others say residents may need to take additional precautions beyond relying solely on law enforcement.

“It’s great if the community does stuff, or our tax dollars does stuff, for sure,” said Dustin Heindel. “But in the end, I think you should do what you need to do to protect yourself.”

Police are also urging residents to take basic security measures as the crimes continue. The LAPD’s North Hollywood Division says residential burglaries have increased in the area and is reminding homeowners to ensure security cameras are working, keep windows and doors locked, and notify a neighbor or security company if they plan to be away for extended periods.

The LAPD says it will maintain an increased presence in the San Fernando Valley as investigators work to identify suspects and determine whether the crimes are linked.

In the meantime, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, as concerns grow over whether repeated surges in enforcement will be enough to deter what appears to be an ongoing cycle of burglaries in Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Fox News Digital reached out to the LAPD and Bass’ office for comment.
