How to Mend Family Ties: Resolving Spousal Conflicts with In-Laws

0

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I, a same-sex couple, have never seen eye to eye with my sister and her spouse. Over the 17 years we’ve known each other, the friction between them has only intensified. I suspect my sister might harbor feelings of rivalry or envy towards our relationship. She often appears self-centered, while her husband remains aloof and withdrawn.

We meet them annually for a few days, but my husband now chooses to avoid these encounters altogether, even preferring to stay at a hotel during part of their visit. I find myself caught in a dilemma: I empathize with my husband’s feelings of being slighted, yet it pains me that my sole close family isn’t genuinely welcome in our residence. What should I do? — AWKWARD SIS-UATION

DEAR SIS-UATION: If your sister and her husband fail to extend genuine warmth to your husband, it’s understandable why he might not feel inclined to greet them cheerfully. Since you’re already covering the cost of a hotel, why not accommodate them there and arrange to meet them outside your home for meals or other activities? By letting your husband limit his interactions with them without retreating from his own space, the discomfort might lessen.

DEAR ABBY: As a 36-year-old divorced man, I’ve been cohabitating with my girlfriend for a year. She is far more accomplished and worldly than I am, which she frequently points out during disagreements. How should I handle this situation? — FEELING INFERIOR IN TEXAS

DEAR INFERIOR: Your girlfriend’s behavior fits the description of an intellectual bully. While she may excel in sophistication, her interpersonal skills leave much to be desired. Her inability to engage in fair disputes could ultimately push you away. Communicate this to her—it might lead to a change.

DEAR ABBY: I am a 32-year-old single gay man. I’m no longer looking for a relationship. I feel increasingly comfortable in my own skin while keeping a healthy distance from 95% of people. I have become like this during the past three to five years because I have my own drama to deal with and can’t handle anyone else’s drama on top of it.

It’s not that I don’t like people, I have just reached the point where I’m increasingly less trusting of people, in general, including my employers at the company for which I drive a truck long distance. Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on this. — ALONE IN NORTH CAROLINA

DEAR ALONE: At age 32, you are still a young man with a long life ahead of you. I’m sorry you didn’t mention what has happened to you that has made you less and less trusting of others — it would have been helpful, because relationships are important. My thought on this is: You need to make an appointment at the nearest LGBTQ community center and talk to a therapist about this. And, if necessary, consider looking for another company to drive for — or even a career change — because it isn’t healthy to have to look over your shoulder 24/7.

Hugh Jackman Faces Isolation: Inner Circle Dwindles Dramatically After Divorce

Hugh Jackman’s recent separation from his wife of 27 years, Deborra Lee-Furness, has reportedly taken a significant toll on the Australian actor. Known for his diverse talents, Jackman has apparently been navigating the emotional aftermath of his divorce, which some suggest resembles a midlife crisis. Observers noted his unusual social media activity and a seemingly somber appearance at a football game alongside his “Wolverine & Deadpool” co-star Ryan Reynolds, while Blake Lively and Taylor Swift supported her fiancé, Travis Kelce.

According to an insider speaking to In Touch, Jackman’s current social circle doesn’t align with his usual friends. “He seems to have distanced himself from his old friends, who feel sidelined along with Deborra,” the source revealed. They added, “Despite attempts to make plans, he only seems to have time for people like Ryan Reynolds, which feels like a snub.” While spending leisure time with Reynolds might be seen as a slight to his longtime friends, licensed counselor Stephanie Wijkstrom, CEO of the Counseling and Wellness Center of Pittsburgh, shared insights with Nicki Swift suggesting that such behavior isn’t uncommon following a divorce.

Wijkstrom explains, “Depending on the divorce circumstances, an individual might seek separation from mutual friends to avoid associations with their former partner. This can impact friendships, as friends may sense the withdrawal but not understand its reasons.” This context helps elucidate Jackman’s actions and the strain it may have placed on his relationships.

The announcement of Jackman and Furness’s separation surprised many, given their longstanding reputation as a committed Hollywood couple. Despite some describing Jackman’s post-divorce actions as “odd and erratic,” he appeared to stabilize after confirming his relationship with Broadway star Sutton Foster. Speculation about their relationship had circulated before their official announcement, with Furness alluding to betrayal in a statement to the Daily Mail: “My heart and compassion go out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal.”

Divorce is invariably challenging, particularly after such an enduring partnership. While leaning on friendships can provide support, it may also introduce complications. Friends of Jackman expressed concern to In Touch, worrying that he might not be coping as well as he appears. Wijkstrom advises open communication as a remedy, suggesting, “Discuss your emotional state with friends. Assure them the silence isn’t personal but related to what you’re experiencing, allowing them to understand and support you without taking offense.” This approach can help maintain crucial friendships during such a transformative period.

What led to the end of Hugh and Deb could explain why he’s pushing close friends away

News of Hugh Jackman and Deborra Lee-Furness’ separation came as a shock to many, as they were seen as one of Hollywood’s rare displays of commitment. Unfortunately, good things come to an end, even if you are the Greatest Showman. Despite post-divorce behavior that the In Touch insider described as “odd and erratic,” Jackman seemed to get it together after announcing his new relationship with Broadway star and dear friend Sutton Foster. Affair rumors about Jackman and Foster had been garnering attention for a while prior to the couple’s official debut, but it was Furness who all but confirmed it. In a statement made to the Daily Mail, she said, “My heart and compassion goes out to everyone who has traversed the traumatic journey of betrayal.”

Regardless of how exactly Jackman and Furness eventually came to an end, divorce will always be difficult, especially when you’ve been involved with someone for so long. While finding solace in friendships can help, those relationships can also prove to be equally challenging. An insider told In Touch of Jackman, “Friends can’t help worrying he’s not doing as well as he’s letting on!” At the same time, it appears that they also feel abandoned. Stephanie Wijkstrom says that the best way to deal with this is through open communication. “Talk with your friends about what you are feeling emotionally,” she advises. “Let them know the quiet is not about them but more about what you are going through so that they can lean in and check on you as well as not take it personally.”

Authorities Launch Search for 60-Year-Old Hiker Missing in Lake Tahoe Wilderness

A man in his sixties has vanished while trekking near Lake Tahoe, California, and it’s been nearly a week since his disappearance, prompting an urgent search effort.

Identified as Jason Coughran, the 60-year-old was last seen on May 25 as he embarked on a hike from Fallen Leaf Lake into the Desolation Wilderness, according to a statement from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. Details of his disappearance were shared via their official Facebook page.

This wilderness region, sprawling over 63,930 acres just to the west of Lake Tahoe, is known for its dramatic landscapes shaped by glaciers, featuring valleys and lakes.

Authorities reported that Coughran was last in contact around 4 p.m. on the day he went missing.

Further information from a missing person’s flyer indicated that Coughran was possibly seen hiking near Angora Peak approximately five hours prior to his last communication.

He was described as a 6-foot-2, 150 pound male adult with brown hair, hazel eyes, an athletic build and believed to be wearing khaki shorts.

Ground teams, K9 units and helicopters from El Dorado County’s Echo One and Washoe County in Nevada have been used in the search for Coughran so far, according to the Mountain Messenger.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services joined the search mission on Friday.

The weather in Lake Tahoe was clear and mild when Coughran went missing on Monday, but turned much colder and windier by the following afternoon.

Light snow and fog were also seen that day, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

South Lake Tahoe Airport recorded gusts that topped 40 miles per hour.

On Saturday night, some fog was expected around 1am but it was otherwise clear with calm wind and a low of 33 F.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office noted that the weather could be ‘unpredictable in the high elevations,’ which would include Angora Peak.

Hikers were urged to plan accordingly when venturing into the wilderness.

A Reddit user, who identified herself as Rachel and said she was Coughran’s friend, said the best way to help him was by ‘staying off the trails and letting the professionals collect the data they need to collect to determine where he may have gone.’

‘If we go out there by ourselves, we risk stepping on what may have been his footprints, or impacting other data that could lead to his ultimate rescue or recovery,’ she added.

Ethan Hawke Shares How ‘The Lowdown’ Impacted His Career Success

0

Now that’s commitment.

After wrapping up a late-night shoot for the second season of “The Lowdown” in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ethan Hawke caught a flight to Hollywood to attend the Emmys “For Your Consideration” event for the series. The show has marked a significant milestone in his career.

“This is a first for me! I’ve never experienced a second season for any project before,” Hawke shared with On The Red Carpet.

In the series, Hawke takes on the role of Lee Raybon, a rare book dealer and author determined to unveil the corruption plaguing his cherished city of Tulsa. The first season, praised by critics, follows Lee as he investigates the mysterious suicide of Dale Washberg, the outcast of the influential Washberg family. His relentless pursuit of the truth puts him in the dangerous orbit of some of the city’s most formidable figures.

“These are the roles that ignite a passion for acting,” Hawke explained. “Characters that resonate with you and stories you feel compelled to tell.”

Hawke, who is also an executive producer on the show, said they’re currently in the thick of filming.

Betty Gilpin, Austin Amelio, Martha Plimpton and Clifton Collins, Jr. have been added to the cast, along with Tommy Lee Jones.

“He’s always been one of my favorite actors and he’s come to Tulsa guns blazing,” Hawke said. “We’ve been having a great time working together.”

“It’s a little bit daunting in that you can have the second album jitters. But in the same level it’s, ‘well it’s the same band, we know what we’re doing, and we can do it better,’” he said.

“The second season, the stakes just get higher,” said Sterlin Harjo, the show’s creator, writer and director. “Lee’s personal life, I think the stakes are raised. And also his personal life, even more so than the first season, is intersecting with the dangers of his job.”

“Everything’s getting more tangled up and I feel like it’s a bit of a pressure cooker around Ethan’s character, Lee. And, you know, the fun is watching how he responds to it all,” Harjo added.

Season one of “The Lowdown” is currently streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of FX, Hulu and this ABC station.

Tragic Ambush: Virginia Sheriff Deputy Logan Utt Fatally Attacked by Michael Puckett

0

In Virginia, authorities have launched an extensive and coordinated search for a suspect considered “armed and extremely dangerous,” following an attack on two deputies during a welfare check on Friday night. This incident resulted in the death of a military veteran and left another officer injured.

Carroll County Sheriff Kevin Kemp confirmed that Deputy Logan Utt, aged 31, lost his life during the ambush.

To aid in the search, the US Marshals Service has announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the suspect, Michael Puckett.

The tragic event took place shortly before 9:30 p.m. local time, as two deputies responded to a request from a concerned family member for a welfare check at a residence.

Upon their arrival, the suspect, Puckett, allegedly opened fire on the deputies, resulting in Utt’s death and the wounding of the second officer, who survived thanks to his ballistic vest, authorities reported.

The deputies returned fire, but Puckett fled the scene and remains at large.

The sheriff’s office warned the public not to approach him and call 911 immediately if he is spotted.

Utt joined the force in 2023 after serving the nation as a military veteran.

“Becoming a deputy sheriff was a lifelong dream, and he worked every day to make Carroll County a safer place,” Kemp wrote in a statement Saturday. “Today, Carroll County has lost a hero, and a family has suffered an unimaginable loss.”

Utt leaves behind a wife and children. The wounded deputy is recovering in stable condition.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger confirmed her office is closely monitoring the situation, urging anyone with information on Puckett’s whereabouts to come forward.

“Deputy Logan Utt’s sacrifice is a testament to his bravery and dedication to his community,” Spanberger wrote in a statement on X. “Adam and I are praying for Deputy Utt’s family, the injured officer during his recovery, and for the safety of all of our courageous men and women in law enforcement.”

The Virginia State Police is leading the investigation.

Socceroos Face Narrow 1-0 Loss to Mexico in Pre-World Cup Showdown

0

The Socceroos faced a tough challenge in their final match before the selection of the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, narrowly losing 1-0 to Mexico, one of the tournament’s hosts.

Playing against the world’s 15th-ranked team, Australia struggled in the first half, unable to match the intensity of the fervent crowd at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl Stadium in California.

Despite a spirited comeback attempt in the second half, Australia was unable to secure a draw. Johan Vasquez’s 28th-minute header remained the decisive goal, although Mohamed Toure nearly leveled the score just before the halftime whistle.

The Socceroos showed improvement post-break, but tensions flared into a heated altercation when Mexico attempted a quick free kick, momentarily believing they had scored in the 76th minute before the goal was disallowed.

On the eve of announcing his World Cup squad on June 1, coach Tony Popovic fielded a team rich in experience, featuring the returns of Mathew Leckie and Harry Souttar to the starting lineup for the first time since late 2024.

Fresh off defecting from Italy, Cristian Volpato unsurprisingly didn’t make the squad, having only arrived in camp on Saturday morning, while Nestory Irankunda made a late cameo.

Back-up goalkeeper Joe Gauci, attacker Brandon Borrello, and uncapped striker Tete Yengi didn’t make the 15-man bench.

Leckie started as an inverted right winger in his first game since November 2024, just his third appearance since the 2022 World Cup.

Souttar was in the starting back three in his first appearance since December 2024, alongside 18-year-old Lucas Herrington — who appears destined for his first World Cup — and Alessandro Circati.

Herrington, Souttar, Jordy Bos and Toure in flashes were among the bright sparks.

Souttar blocked a Vasquez shot inside the opening minute and it proved ominous as Mexico dominated the half.

In the seventh minute, Toure was incensed when he was brought down by Edson Alvarez but his pleas for a foul and card were ignored.

Jackson Irvine shot wide in the 15th minute and Mat Ryan brilliantly denied Alexis Vega in the 25th minute.

Mexico scored when Vega whipped in a corner and Vasquez ghosted in behind Aiden O’Neill, jumped and turned a bullet header on to the post that beat Ryan.

Toure should have scored in stoppage time when he pounced on a poor defensive header from Mateo Chavez Garcia and chipped wide of the open goal mouth.

The stadium was in raptures when legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, headed to his fifth World Cup, entered the fray at halftime and three minutes later batted away O’Neill’s fierce long-range strike.

Australia played with noticeably more intensity after half-time, with Popovic heavily rotating as the half went on.

The non-goal and subsequent scuffle proved the half’s biggest events and Mexico resisted a late Socceroos flurry.

Australia head to their Bay Area base on Sunday (Monday AEST) before the squad is announced, then have another friendly against Switzerland in San Diego on 6 June.

Mark Ruffalo Backs Billionaire Tom Steyer’s Bid for California Governor: A Hollywood Endorsement

0

Mark Ruffalo, known for his roles in various Disney-Marvel films, has thrown his support behind billionaire Tom Steyer in the California governor’s race. This move comes despite Ruffalo’s frequent criticisms of billionaires in general.

Ruffalo made his endorsement public through a post on Instagram this Thursday.

In his post, Ruffalo praised Steyer’s commitment, stating, “Tom has dedicated the past two decades to combating climate change. In contrast, Becerra is heavily backed by Big Oil and other corporations that have poured nearly $50 million into getting him elected,” he asserted.

While Ruffalo openly expressed his reservations about billionaires, admitting he finds it unnecessary for individuals to possess such substantial wealth, he attempted to draw a line between Steyer and typical oligarchs. This distinction seemed to overlook the fact that Steyer, like many oligarchs, is leveraging his wealth to gain political sway.

“I’m not fond of billionaires and believe there’s no justification for such wealth, yet I differentiate between an oligarch and a billionaire,” Ruffalo explained. “Oligarchs use their wealth to gather more power out of sheer greed, often exploiting land, resources, or people. Despite Tom being a billionaire, I don’t classify him as an oligarch, unlike figures such as Musk, Thiel, Trump, or Bezos.”

“Tom is a progressive who will work for the people of California, not to enrich himself or corporations. If elected, he will appoint an administration of people who are progressive and solution-oriented,” he continued. “He will be a bulwark against Trump. Tom is calling for ICE to be abolished and will hold ICE accountable for crimes in California. He is against the corporate merger of Paramount and Warner Bros, and he will work to make Hollywood a thriving industry based in California again. Tom supports taxing the rich (including himself) whereas Becerra has not supported calls to tax billionaires.”

Ruffalo’s hardcore progressive fans expressed disappointment, with many feeling that Steyer’s very status as a billionaire disqualifies him from office.

“This is so disappointing to read from you. Steyer could help millions of people without ever holding office. With his money TODAY. But instead he’s spent $300 million on his presidential run and this governor run. Billionaires should not exist,” said one user.

“Dear Mark, Tom is the perfect example of ‘if he wanted to, he would.’ Steyer doesn’t need the title of governor to do any of the things he claims to want to do, he’s a billionaire!!!” said another user.

“Making promises about ICE doesn’t mean he will actually do anything, or that he actually can. The problem Billionaires Promises, is getting Billionaire results when their Billionaire Friends turn their backs on them,” said another.

Tragic Loss: Alaskan Bush People Star Matt Brown Passes Away at 43

0

The search for Matt Brown, a star of the reality TV show “Alaskan Bush People,” has come to a heartbreaking conclusion. The 43-year-old was found deceased on Saturday.

Matt’s brother, Bear Brown, shared the sad news through a TikTok video, disclosing that a body had been discovered in a river located in northern Washington state just a few hours prior.

Authorities later confirmed the body to be that of Matt Brown. His brother Noah was present and assisted law enforcement in retrieving Matt’s body from the water.

Bear indicated that Matt may have died by suicide, noting the presence of a wound that appeared to be self-inflicted, although he did not specify the wound’s exact location or severity.

“I never imagined he would harm himself,” Bear expressed to his TikTok audience, reflecting on Matt’s struggles with drug and alcohol addiction, which he battled before his untimely death.

‘He struggled for a long time with addiction and I was so worried for a long time that he was going to OD. I didn’t think that he would hurt himself.’

Brown appeared on Alaskan Bush People with his family from 2014-2018.

Bear said that the coroner allowed him and other family members to see Brown’s body following his retrieval from the river.

Bear also asked that the public ‘respect [the] family’ amid their grieving and to ‘watch the comments’ that they leave on social media about Brown.

‘Sometimes words can hurt more than fists can,’ said Bear, who noted that one of Brown’s last social media posts was about the ‘negativity’ he had received online.

He concluded the TikTok video with a final plea to the public to be ‘kind’ to the Brown family.

In dispatch audio obtained by TMZ on Saturday, personnel who responded to the scene found a backpack and a phone, but ‘no person or body’ at the time.

Later, personnel also found an empty holster inside the backpack.

The holster was believed to hold a revolver and an individual shared in the audio that the gun could have gone in the water with Brown.

Bear’s heartbreaking update comes just two days after he tearfully revealed on Thursday that multiple witnesses had seen Matt in a river in Okanogan County.

He had voiced fears that his brother may have taken his own life at the time.

The news of Brown’s death came hours after authorities suspended the search for the previously unidentified man in Washington’s Okanogan River

The Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is investigating a report of an unidentified man swept away in the Okanogan River on Wednesday.

But on Saturday, TMZ reported that authorities had suspended the search for the unidentified man.

The decision came after an extensive multi-agency search operation failed to uncover any sign of the missing man.

According to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office, per the outlet, deputies were joined by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife personnel, dive teams, sonar operators, boats, personal watercraft and even a cadaver dog as crews combed a widening stretch of the river near Oroville on Friday.

Despite the massive effort, authorities said no evidence was found.

Officials noted that recent rainfall had caused water levels to rise and currents to intensify throughout the day, making conditions increasingly hazardous for search teams.

Investigators believed the river’s strong flow may have carried the body far beyond the area where he was last seen, significantly complicating recovery efforts.

Bear previously said his last conversation with Brown took place at a Walmart before Bear left for Florida.

‘He called me after that, and he said that he had fallen off the wagon. And I was like, “Well, get back on it, man. Everybody falls off. Just get back on it. Go to rehab if you’ve got to. You’ve got this.”’

‘Everyone thinks that the family has shunned him. That’s not actually the case.

‘Please be respectful to the family, to my mom especially,” he said. “Please don’t attack my mom. Mom cares very much for Matt and always has.’

Bear said his brother had recently had a ‘really bad breakup’.

Per a Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office press release a caller called 911 on Wednesday, May 27, to report that ‘he had just spoken to a male sitting in the shallow water of the Okanogan River south of Oroville, WA.

‘The caller turned away from the man sitting in the river, heard a sound, turned back toward the man in the water and saw the man was face down in the water drifting away in the current.’

Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS responded to the location but were unable to locate the male in the river.

The release added, ‘Additional Okanogan County Deputies responded to the location with one boat, two jet ski type watercraft and an aerial drone. Also assisting in the search was the WA Department of Fish and Wildlife with a boat.

‘A firearm was recovered from the water in the area where the male was last seen.

Revitalize Your Hamstrings: 4 Morning Exercises to Boost Strength After 60

Trainer Reveals 4 Morning Exercises to Boost Hamstring Strength and Hip Control After 60

Hamstrings are often overlooked until they start feeling like a forgotten parking brake. You become acutely aware of them when bending forward feels unusually stiff, when climbing a hill demands extra effort, or when your lower back steps in to assist as you rise from a bent position. As we age past 60, the back of our legs can quickly lose strength, especially as we spend more time sitting and less time focusing on lower-body workouts.

While lunges are great, they don’t always target the hamstrings as directly as needed. Lunges primarily engage the entire leg, focusing on the quads and glutes. For hamstring strength, progress is often faster when you dedicate time to exercises like hinging, bridging, holding, and curling. These movements help the back of the legs manage length, generate tension, and facilitate hip-driven motion.

As a coach, I prioritize rebuilding hamstring strength with care and precision. Rapid repetitions aren’t very effective here. The key is in the controlled descent, robust hip extension, and the right amount of tension to engage the hamstrings without straining the lower back. These four morning exercises are perfect for this purpose. They are straightforward, easy to repeat, and powerful enough to activate the back of your legs as you start your day.

In coaching, hamstrings are among the areas I like to rebuild with patience and precision. Fast reps don’t do much here. The sweet spot is controlled lowering, strong hip extension, and enough tension to make the hamstrings work without turning every rep into a lower-back negotiation. These four morning exercises fit that approach well because they’re simple, repeatable, and strong enough to wake up the backside of your legs before the day gets moving.

Banded Good Mornings

Banded good mornings train your hamstrings, glutes, and lower back while teaching your hips to hinge with control. As you push your hips back, your hamstrings lengthen under tension, which is exactly the kind of work they need to regain strength. Lunges can miss that direct hinge demand, but good mornings put the back of your legs in the driver’s seat. Better hinge strength carries into bending, lifting, walking uphill, and standing taller without your lower back taking over.

Muscles Trained: Hamstrings, glutes, lower back, core

How to Do It:

  1. Stand on the middle of a resistance band with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Loop the band around your upper back or hold the ends near your shoulders.
  3. Brace your core and keep a slight bend in your knees.
  4. Push your hips back as your torso leans forward.
  5. Drive your hips forward to return to standing.
  6. Squeeze your glutes at the top of the rep.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps. Rest for 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Bodyweight good mornings, slower tempo good mornings, staggered-stance good mornings

Form Tip: Keep your back flat and move through your hips, not your spine.

Glute Bridge Walkout

Glute bridge walkouts train your hamstrings and glutes while your core keeps your hips steady. As your feet move farther from your body, your hamstrings have to work harder to keep your hips lifted and maintain proper posture. That makes the movement a strong choice for restoring hamstring strength because the tension builds quickly without needing heavy equipment. Stronger bridge walkouts support walking, stairs, standing up, and keeping your hips active during daily movement.

Muscles Trained:
Hamstrings, glutes, core

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Press through your heels and lift your hips.
  3. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes.
  4. Walk your feet forward one small step at a time.
  5. Walk your feet back toward your body while keeping your hips lifted.
  6. Lower your hips with control when the set is complete.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 6 to 8 walkouts. Rest for 45 to 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Shorter walkouts, glute bridge holds, mini-band bridge walkouts

Form Tip: Keep your hips high and stop before your lower back starts doing the work.

Single-Leg Glute Bridge Hold

Single-leg glute bridge holds train one hamstring and glute at a time while your core keeps your pelvis from twisting. Holding the top position forces the working leg to stay under tension, which helps rebuild strength through the back of the leg without rushing through reps. Compared with lunges, this provides the hamstrings with a more focused challenge while still training hip control. That control matters every time you push off while walking, climb stairs, or stand from a seated position.

Muscles Trained: Hamstrings, glutes, core

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and one foot flat on the floor.
  2. Extend your opposite leg or keep it bent over your hip.
  3. Brace your core and press through your planted heel.
  4. Lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees.
  5. Hold the top position while squeezing your glute.
  6. Lower your hips with control and switch sides.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 15 to 25 second holds per side. Rest for 30 to 45 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Two-leg bridge holds, single-leg bridge reps, elevated bridge holds

Form Tip: Keep your hips level and press through your heel.

Slider Hamstring Curls

Slider hamstring curls train your hamstrings through a direct curl pattern while your glutes and core hold your hips up. As your heels slide away, the hamstrings have to control the lengthening phase, then pull your feet back in to finish the rep. This gives you hamstring work; lunges can’t fully match it because the backs of your legs handle the main action from start to finish. Stronger hamstring curls help with knee control, hip strength, walking power, and lower back protection during everyday movement.

Muscles Trained: Hamstrings, glutes, core

How to Do It:

  1. Lie on your back with your heels on sliders, towels, or a smooth surface.
  2. Press through your heels and lift your hips into a bridge.
  3. Brace your core and keep your hips lifted.
  4. Slide your heels away from your body with control.
  5. Pull your heels back toward your glutes.
  6. Lower your hips after completing each set.

Recommended Sets and Reps: Perform 3 sets of 6 to 10 reps. Rest for 60 seconds between each set.

Best Variations: Short-range slider curls, single-leg slider curls, eccentric-only slider curls

Form Tip: Move slowly on the way out and keep your hips from dropping.

How to Make Hamstring Work Pay Off After 60

Hamstrings respond well when you train them with control instead of speed. The back of your legs needs time under tension, a good hinge pattern, and enough direct work to rebuild strength without irritating your lower back. A few focused mornings each week can make a real difference, especially when the reps stay smooth and the positions stay clean.

  • Own the hinge first: Good mornings teach your hips to move while your hamstrings control the motion. Keep the range comfortable and make your hips lead the rep.
  • Use holds to build tension: Single-leg bridge holds give your hamstrings and glutes a steady strength signal. Hold a strong position instead of bouncing through quick reps.
  • Control the lowering phase: Slider curls and good mornings give the hamstrings a lot of work on the way out or down. Slow that phase and keep tension through the back of your legs.
  • Keep your lower back quiet: Brace your core, keep your ribs down, and stop the set when your lower back starts taking over. The hamstrings should feel like the main worker.
  • Progress in small steps: Add a few seconds to your holds, use a stronger band, increase reps, or slow your tempo. Small changes build strength without making the routine feel like a grind.

Start with clean reps and a range you can control. When your hamstrings get stronger, bending, walking, climbing stairs, and standing up tend to feel smoother because the backs of your legs finally start pulling their weight again.
