Decades-Old Cold Case Cracked: Chewing Gum DNA Leads to Arrest of Serial Predator

0

A man from Washington has admitted guilt in two long-unsolved cold cases, as investigators ingeniously linked him to the crimes using a deceptive tactic and a single piece of chewing gum.

Mitchell Gaff, aged 68, confessed his guilt on Thursday in Snohomish County Superior Court. He acknowledged his responsibility for the rapes and murders of Judith “Judy” Weaver and Susan Vesey, as reported by the Everett Police Department.

Gaff, identified as a “sexual sadist” and self-admitted rapist, was connected to these heinous acts after detectives matched his DNA, obtained from a piece of chewing gum he discarded, to evidence found at both crime scenes, USA Today reported.

The breakthrough occurred when detectives from the Everett Police Department visited his residence in Olympia under the guise of being gum industry researchers. They offered him a free gum sample, wearing casual shorts and T-shirts to lend credibility to their cover story.

This clever operation ultimately led to Gaff’s confession in the tragic cases of Judith Weaver and Susan Vesey, marking a significant closure for the community in Everett, Washington.

Gaff agreed, and ultimately sampled a few flavors while discarding each piece of gum into small cups with lids, the outlet reported. The pieces were then sent through the federal database CODIS, where investigators ultimately linked Gaff to both murders.

Everett was initially taken into custody in May 2024 on charges stemming from Weaver’s death, police said.

Weaver’s body was discovered inside her home on Rucker Ave after first responders were called to the scene regarding a fire on June 2, 1984, according to authorities.

Once in custody, authorities linked him to Vesey’s murder, in which her husband discovered she had been murdered inside her home the day after her 21st birthday on July 12, 1980, officials said.

Gaff’s admission comes after a lifetime of terrorizing his local Washington community, in which he landed behind bars on multiple occasions and was eventually required to register as a sex offender.

In 1979, Gaff approached then-29-year-old Jackie Brown outside her home as she was putting her lawnmower away, brandished an air gun and ordered her to get on her knees, USA Today reported.

Gaff proceeded to unleash a brutal physical assault against Brown, in which he reportedly began beating her in the head with the weapon and slamming her head against the concrete floor.

In a bid to save her life, Brown reportedly waited until Gaff put his gun down to try to escape.

“I threw my body against him and caught him off guard, and he kind of stumbled against the wall,” Brown told USA Today. “I stood up, and I was trapped, and he said, ‘You’re going to die now, you [expletive].’ And I knew I was dead.”

Brown managed to escape, and Gaff was later convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and burglary in the case, according to the outlet.

Just four years later, while Gaff was on probation, he was reportedly arrested again after he attacked a pair of 14-and 16-year-old girls as they slept in their mother’s home on Aug. 28, 1984.

In that case, court documents reportedly revealed he tied both girls up with an electrical cord, cut off their clothes, beat them and repeatedly raped the sisters.

One girl managed to escape and ran for help, causing Gaff to flee the scene.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and burglary, according to USA Today.

Throughout the years, Gaff reportedly confessed to attempting to attack up to 30 women and girls in one day in the 1980s and admitted to raping at least eight of them.

“I am so proud of our Everett Police Department for solving this murder case by utilizing advancements in DNA analysis techniques,” Everett Mayor Cassie Franklin said in a previous statement. “We honor Susan’s memory as we bring this suspect to justice.”

Gaff is scheduled to be sentenced on May 13.

The Everett Police Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

In a distressing incident in California, an 81-year-old substitute teacher and Vietnam War veteran, Ed Ashman, was critically injured after being struck by an e-bike ridden by a teenager who subsequently fled the scene. The incident, which has left a community in shock, unfolded while Ashman was making his way home from El Toro High School in Lake Forest, where he regularly teaches.

The 14-year-old suspect allegedly collided with Ashman using an electric motorcycle as the elderly educator attempted to cross a street. The crash occurred on a Thursday afternoon, and police were alerted to the scene around 4 p.m. Authorities found Ashman lying critically injured on the side of the road near the intersection of Toledo Way and Ridge Route Drive.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department detailed the situation in a Facebook post, noting, “When the deputies arrived, they located an 81-year-old victim with life-threatening injuries.” They also clarified that the vehicle involved was an electric motorcycle intended for off-highway use. The teenager, suspected of reckless driving, had already fled the area by the time officers arrived.

Ashman, who bravely served as a U.S. Airman during the Vietnam War, was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Witnesses at the scene provided a description of the adolescent rider, aiding the police in their investigation of this reckless act that has left a cherished community member fighting for his life.

Ashman was transported to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition, according to police. Witnesses provided a description of the teen who allegedly struck him with the e-bike, who was “suspected of driving recklessly at the time of the crash,” per cops.

“The suspect was quickly identified, and a search warrant was served at a nearby residence in the city of Lake Forest,” the sheriff’s department says. “A 14-year-old male was subsequently arrested and booked at Orange County Juvenile Hall for charges related to the incident.”

Police officials told local Fox affiliate KTTV that hit-and-run charges are expected to be filed against the teen, along with reckless driving.

“It’s kind of sad that [Ashman] has to get injured this way from a stupid kid on a bike,” an El Toro High School student told KTTV.

Police officials say the teen was suspected of riding an electric motorcycle with a 750-watt battery or more, allowing him to travel at speeds of 28 mph or more.

A GoFundMe launched for Ashman’s family describes him as a “proud grandfather” who is “fighting through a series of severe injuries.” The description says he was “walking home from El Toro High School,” where he was a “beloved substitute teacher,” when the crash unfolded.

“Our community was shaken this week by a tragic accident,” the GoFundMe says. “Ed is in extremely difficult physical shape. The road to recovery will be incredibly long.”

Though he did not disclose the new date in his tweet, the decision has further fueled the ongoing discord between the two brothers.

The tweet read, “I’m officially changing my birthday date.

Peter and his brother were both born on November 18, 1981, and together they achieved fame as P-Square, one of Nigeria’s most iconic music duos.

Earlier, Rudeboy accused Mr  P of orchestrating his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Apparently, Mr P filed a petition with the EFCC, alleging Rudeboy of fraudulent dealings, but Rudeboy was eventually cleared of the allegations.

The drama unfolded with Rudeboy being invited by the EFCC, questioned extensively about his financial transactions, and even asked to provide a lawyer and sureties.

Despite being proven innocent, Rudeboy expressed disappointment that his twin brother didn’t apologize for the false accusation.

Trump Initiates $166 Billion Tariff Refund Program for U.S. Businesses

0

As Americans continue to express frustration over the persistent high prices of gas and everyday goods, a significant financial move is underway that might surprise many. In an effort to address economic tensions, the federal government is initiating a program to distribute tariff refunds—though the beneficiaries may not be who you’d expect.

Rather than aiding the average citizen directly, this refund initiative is set to benefit large corporations. These refunds are aimed at returning $166 billion in import duties imposed during Donald Trump’s administration, marking what could be one of the largest repayments to import business owners in U.S. history.

As of today, businesses can officially start applying for these tariff refunds. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is facilitating this process, offering importers the chance to claim reimbursement for the tariffs their companies paid.

This development follows a significant Supreme Court decision in February, which ruled that the enforcement of such tariffs was beyond the scope of presidential power. The court clarified that it is Congress, not the Executive Branch, responsible for implementing these types of taxes.

This move follows the Supreme Court’s February ruling that Trump’s policy to enforce tariffs was not authorized, stating that it is up to Congress, not the Executive Branch, to enforce these taxes.

That ruling allowed the lower courts to force the federal government’s hand into returning those funds. The Supreme Court ruled in February that the law Trump relied on for his signature policy did not authorize the imposition of tariffs, finding that Congress – not the president – holds authority over such taxes.

The decision set the stage for lower courts to order the government to reverse course and return the funds.

As for how much could be returned, the impact is significant.

According to court filings, more than 330,000 importers paid tariff taxes on over 53 million shipments. Starting tonight, any company or their brokers can log onto the CBP’s new refund ‘Automated Commercial Environment’ portal and request their refund.

CBP says refunds that check out will take about 60 to 90 days to hit their bank accounts, although more complicated cases could take even longer.

The process will likely be difficult given the scope of the returns and the sheer number of businesses impacted. CBP noted that their system was not created to handle that number of claims. That means some submissions may require manual processing.

When Trump introduced these tariffs last spring, he promised they would ‘make America wealthy again.’

Tariffs are taxes on imports, so Trump’s trade policies so far this term have impacted companies that primarily import foreign goods. For these businesses, the way to absorb the cost was to either pay the tax themselves, cut back elsewhere, or raise prices, thereby impacting consumers.

However, the catch is, only businesses that officially paid these tariffs will be able to get that money back – not the millions of Americans who paid higher prices for items they bought.

One user on X pointed this out, saying: ‘American consumers paid these taxes through the price of goods, and that money was used to benefit the American people! Now that the court has ruled this way, that money goes to the importers, and American consumers lose money.’

A second person on X inquired who would be prioritized. ‘If this rollout is limited to select importers first, the real question is who gets priority and who waits,’ they wrote.

Meanwhile, Trump has once again ramped up the rhetoric towards Iran over the weekend, leaving markets to deal with the fallout on Monday morning.

Brent crude plunged as much as 13 percent to $86 a barrel last Friday as Iran said it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz. But after another weekend of escalation and closure of the key waterway by the Iranians, it is back up to $95 a barrel.

Trump said he was sending envoys for peace talks in Pakistan and would launch new strikes on Iran unless it accepts his terms.

The ceasefire, which was due to run until Tuesday, is also in doubt after the US seized an Iranian cargo ship and Tehran threatened to retaliate.

Prosecutors to Determine if Charges Will Be Filed Against Singer D4vd in Connection with Murder

The Los Angeles County District Attorney is poised to make a critical decision on Monday regarding whether to press formal charges against the singer D4vd, who was apprehended last week under suspicion of murder. The arrest has drawn significant attention, given the high-profile nature of the case involving the musician.

David Anthony Burke, known by his stage name D4vd, was taken into custody by Los Angeles police officers at a residence in the Hollywood Hills on Thursday around 5 p.m. This arrest follows an extensive investigation that spanned several months, centering on the tragic death of 14-year-old Celest Rivas Hernandez.

Heartfelt Tributes: Denise Richards’ Daughters Shower Late Patrick Muldoon with Love Before Tragic Passing

This morning brought somber news as actor Patrick Muldoon, known for his roles on Melrose Place and Days of Our Lives, passed away suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 57. Friends and fans alike are left in shock, including actress Denise Richards, who dated Muldoon in the late 1990s.

Richards and Muldoon first crossed paths on the set of Starship Troopers, sparking a romance that lasted until 2000. Despite parting ways romantically, the pair maintained a strong friendship over the years, affectionately referring to each other as “schweet babe” since their days on the film set. Their enduring bond was recently highlighted in a March 2025 episode of Denise Richards and Her Wild Things, where Richards reunited with Muldoon to star as his love interest in his music video for “Gray Again.”

Reflecting on their unique connection, Richards shared, “Our romantic relationship was a long time ago, but our friendship is deep.” She also revealed that her former marriage to Charlie Sheen complicated their friendship. “During my marriage to Charlie, we didn’t speak, which was difficult. But as the marriage ended, Pat became someone I frequently confided in,” she admitted.

Richards and Muldoon rekindled their friendship following her divorce from Sheen, with whom she has two daughters, Sami and Lola. Both daughters, now in their early twenties, accompanied their mother to DECIDER’s studio in March 2025 to promote Denise Richards and Her Wild Things. They expressed their fondness for Muldoon, with Sami stating, “Patrick is my favorite,” and Lola chiming in, “I was going to say Pat. I love Pat so much.”

“Patrick is my favorite,” Sami said, while Lola added, “I was gonna say Pat. I love Pat so much.”

Sami continued, “He’s like a 15-year-old boy who never grew up but did at the same time in the best way possible. He’s really funny. And I’ve said that to him.” Richards, for her part, added, “He’s been one of my best friends since I was a teenager. And he’s close to our families, close to my husband. But I think the girls don’t look at my famous friends as famous. They just look at them as mom’s friends.”

Muldoon’s appearance in the since-canceled Bravo series holds a sadder meaning today. Muldoon’s sister Shana Muldoon-Zappa told TMZ that her brother decided to take a shower after having a cup of coffee on Sunday morning (April 19), but when his girlfriend went to check on him, she found him unconscious on the bathroom floor. While paramedics attempted to revive him, there was ultimately nothing they could do.

RIP, Schweet Babe.

Senator Mark Warner’s Daughter Passes Away at 36 Following Prolonged Battle with Diabetes

0

Washington — On Monday, Democratic Senator Mark Warner from Virginia shared the heartbreaking news that his daughter, Madison, has passed away at the age of 36 after enduring a prolonged struggle with juvenile diabetes and other health challenges.

“We are utterly devastated by the loss of our cherished daughter, Madison,” Warner and his wife, Lisa Collis, expressed in a heartfelt statement on social media. “Her presence brought immense joy and love into our lives, and her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled.”

The family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from friends and family during this challenging time, while also requesting privacy as they work through their grief.

Warner, who has served in the Senate since 2009 following his tenure as Virginia’s governor, resides in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife. The couple also has two other daughters, Gillian and Eliza.

Throughout his time in the Senate, Warner has been a vocal advocate for diabetes research, drawing from his personal experience with a daughter affected by Type 1 diabetes. He has actively championed efforts to reduce insulin costs and supported legislation aimed at broadening access to diabetes care.

Unraveling Mysteries: Bartender Reveals Timeline Inconsistencies in Missing American’s Case in the Bahamas

0

An intriguing detail emerged from a bartender who interacted with an American woman in the Bahamas shortly before her mysterious disappearance. The encounter shed light on the couple’s activities leading up to the incident.

Identified as Ken, a 38-year-old bartender at the Abaco Inn, recounted to the New York Post that Brian and Lynette Hooker were enjoying rum and Cokes by the pool on the evening of April 3. The following day, the couple reportedly set out in a small dinghy from Hope Town, heading towards their boat moored at another spot on Elbow Cay, according to local police reports.

Brian Hooker informed Bahamian authorities that his wife accidentally fell from the dinghy around 7:30 p.m. on April 4, taking the ignition key with her. Officials noted that Brian reached a marina in Marsh Harbour at approximately 4 a.m. on April 5, after paddling for about eight hours following Lynette’s fall overboard.

A photograph taken in 2023 captures Lynette and Brian Hooker aboard a small boat. The image, provided by John Waters, adds a personal touch to their story.

Ken recalled Brian expressing gratitude for the speedy service of their drinks, a seemingly minor detail that adds to the timeline of their last known activities.

“He was like, ‘Oh man, thank you for getting me served kinda quick’ … because we were crowded,” Ken said.

Ken noted that he didn’t see anything unusual with the couple, though he never actually saw Lynette Hooker while they were at the pool for around two and a half hours.

“When I heard about it the next day, I was shocked, definitely. But then again, I didn’t see the lady, I didn’t get to talk to her or anything like that,” he said.

Ken, who’s from the Bahamas and knows the area well, said, however, one detail doesn’t add up.

“It’s weird … for him to be going from here to there, then ending up in Marsh Harbour and nobody sees the lady, it’s weird,” Ken said. “What catches my eye is they left here at 7, 7:30 and [her going missing] supposedly happened right after they left here, and he didn’t make it over there until 4 a.m. or something like that, in 25-mph winds.”

“It’s only four miles that way. It shouldn’t have taken eight to 10 hours to get there. Even if he was only floating, it should have been a much quicker time,” he said.

While Brian Hooker himself flew out of the Bahamas on Wednesday to be with his mother, who’s reportedly very ill, according to his attorney, Lynette Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, flew to the island on Thursday to help with the search.

Aylesworth told NBC News she questions Brian Hooker’s version of how her mother went missing, adding that she spent three hours talking with police.

“I feel like this was probably preplanned, if anything, like, it doesn’t seem like just some accident,” Aylesworth said.

Brian Hooker hasn’t been charged with a crime and was released from jail by Bahamian officials, who declined to charge him at the time, but left the investigation into Lynette open.

“When I first got here, I sat up there and looked at the boat and started talking to her like she was here. I was like, ‘Hey Mom, I’m here. Wherever you are. I just want to talk to you and see you again,’” Aylesworth said. “It’s making it a little bit more real.”

Shocking Confession: Man Caught Concealing 22-Year-Old Woman’s Body Sparks Investigation

0

Photos of victim Abbi Schaeffer (Kansas City Police Department).

A Missouri man has confessed to attempting to conceal the body of a woman who vanished following a suspected overdose incident.

Jacob Block, 28, has admitted to charges of abandoning a corpse and tampering with evidence in relation to the disappearance of 22-year-old Abbi Schaeffer, who was reported missing in May 2022. According to documents reviewed by Law&Crime, Schaeffer’s skeletal remains were discovered nearly a year later inside a broken box discarded in a roadside ditch. Although the extent of decomposition prevented a definitive cause of death, investigators did reveal that fentanyl was present in her system at the time.

The Kansas City Police Department has reported that Schaeffer was last seen entering a residence with Block on the day she disappeared—and she was never seen leaving that location.

Details from the probable cause affidavit indicate that Schaeffer’s family observed her departing their home via their Ring camera on May 23, 2022. She left in a gray BMW, accompanied by her cat. The family tracked her movements using the Life360 app until May 24, 2022, when the signal was traced to another house in Jackson County, Missouri.

Police visited the mentioned residence on June 1, 2022, but found it vacant. A neighbor informed authorities that a white male resided there, often seen driving a “dark-colored” BMW. Over the weekend, a U-Haul truck had been noticed in the driveway. The neighbor also recalled seeing a cat that matched the description of Schaeffer’s pet.

While Kansas City police investigated the BMW and connected it with Block, it was also discovered that federal agents were monitoring the same car and the same suspect for an unrelated case. Block was convicted in February 2024 of participating in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and distributing fentanyl in connection with an unnamed person’s fatal overdose in 2020.

According to probable cause affidavits, police caught up with Block and Eunice Carlo-Martinez on June 2, 2022. Block denied knowing Schaeffer and denied that she ever got into his car. But when detectives got a hold of surveillance videos taken at the home where Schaeffer’s Life360 app last pinged, they found both Block and Schaeffer walking inside together on the night of May 23, 2022.

Police said Block and Carlo-Martinez were seen going in and out of the house the following day “several times.” Two days after Schaeffer was last seen entering the house, Carlo-Martinez was allegedly seen “moving mops and buckets away from the sliding glass door” at the back of the house. She also allegedly pulled a power cord to deactivate one of the cameras, which came back on about 45 minutes later.

On the morning of May 26, 2022, Block and Carlo-Martinez were allegedly seen loading a “large black box-like object” into a U-Haul truck parked by the home.

Cameras never captured Schaeffer leaving the residence.

Detectives wrote that a search of Facebook accounts associated with Block and Carlo-Martinez indicated that the two allegedly gave Schaeffer fentanyl and she “suffered an overdose” the night she went missing.

A box that resembled the same one Block and Carlo-Martinez were allegedly seen moving out of their home was found in a ditch on the side of a road on April 1, 2023. Inside were skeletal remains that were positively identified as Schaeffer on April 4, 2023. Brain matter recovered from the remains tested positive for fentanyl, THC, and benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, but due to the state of Schaeffer’s remains, “other manners of death could not be excluded, and normal toxicology could not be ascertained.”

Block and Carlo-Martinez were both charged with accessory to abandonment of a corpse and accessory to tampering with physical evidence.

Block pleaded guilty to both charges against him and was sentenced on Friday to six years in prison. In January 2025, he was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for participating in a conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and distributing fentanyl.

Carlo-Martinez’s case is still open. Her next court date was not available.

Artemis Astronaut Captures Breathtaking iPhone Video of Earth and Moon, Wowing Space Enthusiasts Worldwide

0

Audiences were captivated by a mesmerizing video that made waves online. The stunning footage, captured by Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman using nothing more than his iPhone, left viewers in awe.

The video, which has garnered over 12 million views on X, presents a breathtaking scene: Earth gracefully setting behind the rugged silhouette of its lunar companion. This extraordinary perspective underscores the rare and privileged position of the Artemis II mission.

In the video, Wiseman can be heard marveling at the sight, exclaiming, “Would you look at that, man?” His words capture the sense of wonder shared by many who have viewed the clip.

Accompanying the video, Wiseman’s caption poignantly notes the singular opportunity to capture such a moment, emphasizing the rarity of experiencing such a view in one’s lifetime.

In the caption, the spaceman wrote that he had “only one chance in this lifetime” to get a shot like that.

“I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset,” said Wiseman, who compared the moment to “watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos.”

Why shoot one of the most incredible spectacles on the humble iPhone?

“I could barely see the moon through the docking hatch window,” Wiseman explained, “but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view.”

In addition, the clip is “uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom,” making it on par with the “view of the human eye.”

X viewers were impressed with the shot, with retired astronaut Chris Hadfield dubbing it the “coolest video ever taken with an iPhone.”

“Seeing an iPhone recording of the moon really humanizes the whole experience,” said another fan, with one observer noting that it was the “farthest a consumer smartphone has ever been from Earth.”

“Roughly 250,000 miles away, handheld through a docking hatch window, at 8x zoom with no modifications,” they wrote.

The mission, which ended with splashdown on April 10, marked the first time humans had seen the moon up close since Apollo 17 left it in 1972.

During the historic jaunt, the spacecraft ferried Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen 252,756 miles from Earth on Monday, shattering the 248,655-mile record set by Apollo 13 nearly 56 years ago to the date in 1970.

NASA will now focus on reviewing data from the Artemis II mission before creating plans for Artemis III, which, much like the recent endeavor, will comprise a pass of the moon without a landing.

A potential lunar touchdown will occur in 2028 with Artemis IV, during which astronauts are projected to lay the foundation for a permanent moon base.

NASA predicts it will act as a launchpad for future space missions, including one to Mars.
