In the 24th season of American Idol, Disney Night saw the departure of contestants Kyndal and Lucas Leon from the Top 9 lineup, prompting a response from judges Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan regarding their exit. On this special night, Lucas delivered a lively performance of “Life Is a Highway” from the movie Cars, while Kyndal offered a heartfelt rendition of “Butterfly Fly Away” from Hannah Montana: The Movie. Despite receiving guidance from guest mentor and judge Jennifer Hudson, their journey ended after America’s Vote determined the Top 7, leading to their farewell.
Previously, Kyndal sought redemption following a challenging performance of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” on Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night, during which she struggled with her voice. Judge Carrie Underwood had remarked that it seemed as though Kyndal had surrendered during the performance. Ultimately, both Kyndal and Lucas found themselves at the bottom of the contestant pool, bringing their American Idol experiences to a close. The announcement from host Ryan Seacrest left Carrie, Jennifer, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie visibly taken aback.
In the aftermath of American Idol‘s Disney Night, Carrie and Luke shared their reactions to the eliminations in an interview with TV Insider and other reporters. Carrie remarked, “She wasn’t even on my radar to be eliminated at all. But if you’ve ever watched Idol, this is about the time when we kind of have a shocker. It just happens for whatever reason. Every season kind of has that ‘what?’ moment right around now.”
Carrie Underwood & Luke Bryan Were Very Surprised By Kyndal & Lucas Leon’s Eliminations
After American Idol season 24 Disney Night, in an interview with TV Insider and a small group of reporters, Carrie and Luke expressed their shock about Kyndal and Lucas’ eliminations. Carrie stated, “She wasn’t even on my radar to be eliminated at all. But if you’ve ever watched Idol, this is about the time when we kind of have a shocker. It just happens for whatever reason. Every season kind of has that ‘what?’ moment right around now.”
Luke expressed similar feelings about the eliminations, saying that he was especially surprised that viewers didn’t support Kyndal after she lost her voice. He stated, “I can’t answer why Kyndal’s still not here. Historically, voters will give leniency when someone’s sick, but for some reason, that’s the route they took. I think she’s extremely talented and a beautiful songwriter. She’s got her own little artistic lane. So, I was surprised, definitely.”
Luke went on to say, “Every week, there’s going to be head-scratcher. Everybody forgets that it’s tough to get all the way to being the winner.” Luke added that he was also taken aback by Lucas’ elimination, saying, “And, you know, Luke [Lucas], I was a little surprised by that one. But what a great learning experience. And, you know, it’s like Jennifer said tonight that this is a great starting platform and [for the people who leave], their journey is in their hands.”
Carrie Acknowledged That Winning American Idol Isn’t Everything
Although Carrie skyrocketed to superstardom when she won American Idol season 4 in 2005, she acknowledged that winning isn’t the only path to rising to the top of the entertainment business after the show. In fact, guest mentor and judge Jennifer Hudson, who placed seventh in American Idol season 3 in 2004, is one of the show’s biggest success stories, as she’s now an EGOT winner.
Carrie shared, “American Idol is an incredible platform. It’s an incredible way to get yourself exposed to the world. This is a jumping off point. I won and I’m doing this now. Jennifer didn’t and she’s doing this now. Your destiny is your destiny.”
Carrie continued, “So many people look at winning as the end all and be all, but there are countless numbers of former hopefuls that get to make a living making music. You know what I mean? And that‘s the dream. Even if they’re not No. 1 on Billboard selling bazillions of records. They’re living their dream because they get to make a living making music.”
Although many people, including Carrie and Luke, were shocked by Kyndal and Lucas’ eliminations because they were phenomenal fan favorites, the other seven contestants are also extremely talented, so the competition was very fierce. As the Top 7 finalists–Braden Rumfelt, Brooks, Chris Tungseth, Daniel Stallworth, Hannah Harper, Jordan McCullough, and Keyla Richardson–advance to Taylor Swift Night, Kyndal and Lucas are now free to pursue their music careers. Carrie is right that winning American Idol isn’t always the most important thing, and Kyndal and Lucas both have bright futures in the music industry.
