Joan Vassos, the star of the inaugural season of The Golden Bachelorette, has unveiled a surprising revelation about her initial rose ceremony decisions, offering a glimpse into her thought process during those pivotal moments. Joan’s journey began with Gerry Turner’s season of The Golden Bachelor, but a family emergency necessitated her early departure, setting the stage for her role as the first-ever Golden Bachelorette in 2024.

In a heartwarming conclusion to the season, Joan, a 61-year-old private school administrator from Rockville, Maryland, found love and got engaged to Chock Chapple, a 60-year-old insurance executive hailing from Wichita, Kansas. Their love story has continued to flourish, with the couple maintaining a long-distance relationship. They currently split their time between Maryland and Kansas, all while dreaming of establishing a shared home in New York City.

During a candid discussion on the two be continued… podcast, shared via Instagram, Joan and Chock reflected on their experience in the first season of The Golden Bachelorette. Joan took the opportunity to disclose a secret about her first rose ceremony that she had kept under wraps until now: on that initial night, her focus was not on identifying her lifelong partner, but rather on discerning which men she felt she could not continue with in the journey ahead.

The Golden Bachelorette Star Joan Vassos Reveals Secret From First Rose Ceremony

On the two be continued… podcast (shared via Instagram), Joan and Chock discussed their time on The Golden Bachelorette season 1. For the first time, Joan revealed a secret about the first rose ceremony that she’s never disclosed before, which is that, on the first night, she wasn’t looking for who’d she be spending the rest of her life with, but, rather, the men with whom she knew she couldn’t move forward.

Joan explained, “I’m gonna tell you something that I haven’t ever said before. And that’s that the first night, you’re not really looking for who you’re going to end up with. You’re looking for the people you need to eliminate. Which is really sad. And it’s not right. But that’s how you go through night one. Because you have to make these really important decisions really, really quickly. You have one night to make it.”

Joan Almost Eliminated One Of Her Final Four Contestants

Although Joan asked the Golden Bachelorette producers if she could keep all of the contestants during the first rose ceremony so that she could get to know them better, they said no, and so she had to eliminate six of the men. She shared that she almost eliminated one of the men who ended up being in her final four because he was so nervous that she felt that she couldn’t connect with him.

Joan said, “I was really looking at the guys, trying to figure out the six that I was gonna … not give a rose to. And it was little things. Like, the one guy that I almost eliminated, [who] ended up in the final four, he was really, really nervous. And that’s not a reason to eliminate somebody, but I couldn’t get to know him because he was so nervous. He was shaking. He had sweaty palms. He couldn’t remember anything that he had planned to say. Which is typical.”

However, Joan could relate to this man, and she was glad that she didn’t send him home. She shared, “My mind went blank when I was on Golden Bachelor. I just rambled when I got up there. Which a lot of people do, but he was almost not even able to talk. So, thank God I kept him around … he ended up being really great. But you look for things.” Joan’s final four men consisted of Chock, runner-up Guy Gansert, Pascal Ibgui, who self-eliminated during the final three, and Jordan Heller, who placed fourth.

Joan also revealed that she eliminated one of the men because she found him to be off-putting. She said, “One guy was a little creepy, and I can’t reveal the conversation. But he said something that really bothered me, so I think that was maybe a little bit of an easier decision.”

Joan explained that some of the men might’ve lasted longer if she’d had more time to get comfortable with them. She said, “But some people, it’s just for no particular reason. You just maybe didn’t get a great vibe, or you just didn’t have a great conversation. You know, that it was difficult to talk to or something. Like, really menial things that may have disappeared if you had had a longer interaction. It may have gotten more comfortable, or you would’ve maybe given them more of a chance, but you just don’t have time.”

The first six men who Joan sent home during the first Golden Bachelorette rose ceremony were Thomas Haughney, RJ Johnson, Pablo Gonzalez-Juana, Ken O’Brien, David Huff, and Bill Hernandez.

Joan’s revelation that she chose her Golden Bachelorette men on night one based more on who she couldn’t see a future with, rather than who she could, makes so much sense. First impressions are important, and sometimes it’s easy to determine if someone is right for a romantic relationship immediately. However, Joan’s story also teaches an important lesson that sometimes it’s better to give someone a chance if there’s any hope of a future spark. She did a wonderful job as the Golden Bachelorette, as Joan and Chock are currently living happily ever after.
