Australian Politician Takes Bold Steps to Challenge UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer

0

In brief

  • UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will face a leadership challenge from former minister Catherine West.
  • West was born in Australia and is a dual Australian and British citizen.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, already grappling with a significant defeat in local elections, now faces an additional challenge to his leadership. An Australian-born former minister has announced her intention to contest for his position if no other candidates emerge.

Starmer’s Labour Party recently suffered its most significant losses in local government elections since 1995. This electoral setback has led to increasing demands from within his party for him to resign.

In an effort to consolidate his leadership, Starmer appointed two prominent figures within the Labour Party as advisers: former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and ex-deputy leader Harriet Harman.

However, shortly after these appointments, Catherine West, a Labour politician and former minister, expressed on BBC Radio her desire for the cabinet to devise a strategy to replace Starmer by Monday. If no plan is forthcoming, she declared her intention to challenge him directly.

“If no leadership contenders come forward by tomorrow, I will submit my candidacy for the Leader of the Labour Party on Monday morning,” West stated.

West, who was born and raised in Australia, holds dual Australian and British citizenship.

As the extent of the defeat emerged, more than 20 politicians publicly and privately called on Starmer to set out a timetable for his departure. Asked whether he would stand down, he told British media that it was not the right thing to do.

“I’m not going to walk away from this,” he said earlier on Saturday.

Several Cabinet ministers said on Friday that they continued to support Starmer, who just under two years ago led Labour to a landslide national election victory, and an immediate challenge from the potential leadership rivals does not look straightforward.

Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham does not have the seat in parliament he needs to mount a challenge, and former deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has yet to fully resolve the tax issues that prompted her resignation from office last year.

Wes Streeting, currently health minister, is, like Starmer, tainted by the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the United States. Streeting was close to Mandelson who was sacked over his ties to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Any candidate wishing to make a challenge would need to secure the public support of 20 per cent of Labour members of parliament. With Labour currently holding 403 seats, that equates to 81 backers.

West said she had 10 names behind her so far but her preferred option was that another candidate put themselves forward.

“I think there are several people who would like to do it who have been planning for months,” she said.

Relive 1996: The Top 5 Must-Watch TV Shows That Captivated Audiences

While 1996 might seem like it was just another year in the ’90s, it was a time of unexpected delights for television enthusiasts. By then, beloved series such as “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” and “ER” had already found their stride, while classics like “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” were preparing to bow out. However, 1996 was not merely a pit stop on the way to the new millennium; it was a year when numerous hit shows either reached their zenith or premiered, continuing to captivate audiences.

With the passage of time, recalling what was trending in the mid-’90s might be challenging. To jog our memories, let’s revisit some of the top-rated shows from the 1995-1996 and 1996-1997 seasons according to Nielsen ratings. These programs captured the nation’s attention back then, even if they’ve faded from popular memory today.

“Caroline in the City” was a heartfelt romantic comedy that cultivated a dedicated following willing to tune in regardless of its schedule shifts. Although it may not be as famous as its channel counterparts now, back in the day it achieved ratings comparable to “Friends.” In 1996, it ranked as the fourth most-watched show, and even when it slipped from the top 10 later that year, it outperformed its lead-in, “Frasier.” Not too shabby for a straightforward sitcom.

The show follows Caroline Duffy (played by Lea Thompson), a cheerful cartoonist from Wisconsin crafting a daily comic strip inspired by her life in New York City, reminiscent of “Cathy.” She hires Richard Karinsky (Malcolm Gets), an avant-garde artist, as her new colorist. Richard navigates his new job with a mix of sarcasm and embarrassment.

Caroline in the City

Despite their different paths, Richard and Caroline can’t ignore their budding attraction. Yet, Caroline is engaged to Del (Eric Lutes), an executive at a greeting card company who supports her career. Adding to the mix is Caroline’s neighbor Annie (Amy Pietz), a Broadway dancer starring in “Cats.” The question remains: will Richard and Caroline’s stars finally align?

Wisconsin native Caroline Duffy (Lea Thompson) is a chipper cartoonist who creates a daily comic strip based on her New York City life, a la “Cathy”. Desperate for a new colorist, she hires avant garde artist Richard Karinsky (Malcolm Gets), who reacts to his new circumstances with sardonic embarrassment.

But Richard and Caroline can’t deny their percolating feelings for one another. Too bad Caroline’s already engaged to greeting card company magnate Del (Eric Lutes), who tries to keep Caroline’s career rolling. Along for the ride is Caroline’s neighbor Annie (Amy Pietz), who dances on Broadway in a production of “Cats.” Will Richard and Caroline ever find their way to one another?

Suddenly Susan

Another single gal in the city sitcom, “Suddenly Susan” replaced “Caroline in the City” between “Seinfeld” and “ER” for the 1996-1997 season. 25 million people showed up to watch the show during its first season, making it a huge, runaway hit. While it couldn’t keep up its momentum after being shifted away from the Must See TV line-up, everyone was definitely watching the misadventures of Susan Keane (Brooke Shields) during Season 1.

Susan is a young woman whose wedding falls apart at the altar, forcing her to return to the workforce and put the kibosh on her plans to be a housewife. Awkwardly enough, her fiancé’s brother, Jack Richmond (Judd Nelson), is her boss at The Gate, a local magazine where she worked before she quit. She develops an awkward attraction to Jack. With all of that tension at the workplace, it’s a good thing that Susan has friendship on her side — and a wonderful Nana (Barbara Barrie) in her life.

The Single Guy

Another major hit from 1996 that might not come to mind immediately is “The Single Guy.” A perfect example of NBC’s Thursday “Must See TV” block of sitcoms generating hits out of mainstays like “Seinfeld,” “The Single Guy” held its own during Season 1, but fell off during the second season — when it was moved away from its Thursday slot mates. But it’s hard to deny that its frequent high placement in the Nielsens throughout 1996 has earned it a spot on the list.

The titular guy in question is a New Yorker named Jonathan Eliot (Jonathan Silverman), an unsuccessful writer looking for love in the Big Apple. Jonathan is surrounded by good friends — like Sam Sloan (Joey Slotnick), his best buddy and Sam’s wife, Trudy (Ming-Na Wen). There’s also the building’s lazy doorman, Manny Cordoba (Ernest Borgnine). Jonathan’s other friends tend to flit in and out of his life (mostly due to a wave of Season 2 cast replacements intended to save the show). But the series does end with an interesting development — Jonathan gets married in Las Vegas, thus bringing an end to his lonely days.

3rd Rock from the Sun

While some shows peaked in 1996, others were just starting to get their bearings about them. The first season of “3rd Rock from the Sun” aired in 1996, and part of its second did as well. With that, a top 30 hit was born. The series has become a syndicated broadcast staple since, airing all over the world, a perfect reflection of life in the mid-90’s. Talk about a ’90’s TV show that definitely deserves a reboot. Thankfully, the show didn’t go with the alternate ending that would have changed everything it had previously planned, and the door remains wide open for further continuations.

“3rd Rock” follows a group of space aliens who have been assigned to a research expedition studying normal human life. The team pretends to be a family using the name Solomon, and take up residence together in an Ohio attic. But nothing is as it appears to be. Dick (John Lithgow) is the supercilious high commander; Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is actually the oldest member of the group; Sally (Kristen Johnston) is the tough-talking and strong security officer and Harry (French Stewart), who … well has a plate in his head. Together, the Solomons laugh, love … and hail the Giant Head (William Shatner).

Everybody loves Raymond

Another show that launched in 1996 was “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Now with nine seasons under its belt and a legacy that has well outlived it as one of the best sitcoms of all time, it might be hard to believe that the show was ever considered an unsure prospect. Nonetheless, it started out #84 in the fall of 1996. By the time the winter rolled around, ratings had begun to climb. It would bounce from there to 33rd place, then even higher to #10 and beyond.  People began to realized they liked Raymond that year — and soon they would begin to adore him.

The show centers around sports writer Ray Barone (Ray Romano), who comes from a closely knit Italian family — some might say TOO close, since he’s chronically unable to stand up to his overbearing mom, Marie (Doris Roberts). Marie has a tendency to nitpick and take over when it comes to Ray’s house — irking his wife, Debra (Patricia Heaton), who feels overwhelmed as it is, between their young daughter and twin sons. Along for the ride are Ray’s resentful cop brother, Robert (Brad Garrett), and his father, the stubborn Frank (Peter Boyle).

Investigators Deliver Grim Update on Kristin Smart Case Following Recent Search Efforts

0

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office revealed on Saturday that their search of the residence belonging to the mother of Kristin Smart’s convicted killer did not lead to the discovery of her remains.

Officials confirmed the completion of the investigation at the Arroyo Grande, California home of Susan Flores, mother of Paul Flores, who was convicted of Smart’s murder. The search took place in the 500 block of East Branch Street.

The sheriff’s office said ‘we did not recover Kristin Smart’ and refused to say specifically what evidence they had found.

In a released statement, authorities emphasized their unwavering dedication to locating Kristin Smart and reuniting her with her family.

Investigators will now assess any materials gathered during the search to advance their ongoing investigation.

The search operation at Flores’ property on Wednesday employed ground-penetrating radar and specialized soil analysis, rekindling hopes of discovering Smart’s whereabouts nearly 30 years after her disappearance.

Smart disappeared more than 30 years ago while attending California Polytechnic State University and was legally declared dead in 2002.

Paul Flores, her former classmate, was convicted of her murder in 2022. Smart’s remains have never been found.

In Saturday’s update, law enforcement said they would not provide any further information.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Ian Parkinson had said Friday that that Flores remained a person of interest in the decades–old case.

Parkinson said prosecutors could pursue charges if investigators uncovered enough evidence to build a case.

‘She can still be prosecuted as an accessory if we can make that link,’ Parkinson said.

He said that had happened with Flores’ ex–husband, Ruben Flores. He was charged with helping conceal Smart’s body but was acquitted of being an accessory after the fact.

When asked if investigators were receiving results that were ‘consistent with human remains presence,’ Parkinson said, ‘Correct.’

Authorities explained that they would file as many search warrants as needed.

‘We’re prepared to go as long as it takes until we either find Kristin, find evidence and are satisfied that everything has been searched,’ Parkinson said.

The search warrant for Flores’ home prevented her from re–entering until the search was complete.

The sheriff’s office had access to the whole property and a portion of a neighboring yard.

Smart went missing from California Polytechnic State University in 1996 and was declared dead six years later.

Prosecutors alleged she was killed during an attempted rape and that the last person she was seen with was Paul Flores, a fellow student.

He claimed at the time that he walked Smart home from an off-campus party and parted ways.

Him and his father Ruben were arrested in 2021, with prosecutors alleging that Smart’s body had been buried on Ruben’s property before being moved.

Paul Flores was convicted of her murder and is serving a 25 years-to-life sentence.

Investigators again noted this week that they believed Smart’s body had been moved.

‘Kristin has been moved, and we don’t know how many times she’s been moved and where she’s moved,’ Parkinson said.

Susan has never faced criminal charges related to Smart’s death.

Smart was reported missing by a friend but a search didn’t begin until days later due to the miscommunication between authorities.

Four different search dogs trained to pick up the smell of human remains led police to Paul Flores’s dorm room during the investigation.

However, no evidence was found in his room.

Investigators found him with a black eye during their interview, which Flores claimed he received playing basketball with friends, who denied his account.

He later changed his story to say he bumped his head while working on his car, per court records.

The jury heard evidence that a grave was located beneath the deck of Ruben’s home which is believed to have previously held Smart’s body.

Additionally, two women testified that Flores subsequently drugged them and engaged in sex acts with them against their will and while they were so intoxicated that they were incapable of giving legal consent.

Flores was unanimously found guilty of Smart’s first degree murder.

Alabama Mother Receives Life Sentence for Plotting Murder-for-Hire in Custody Battle

0

In a separate case, an Alabama woman received a life sentence on Friday after being found guilty of hiring a hitman in a custody dispute to kill the father of her child. The Morgan County District Attorney’s Office announced that Jaclyn Skuce, 43, from Madison, was convicted of capital murder. She was accused of plotting to eliminate the child’s father to prevent him from gaining custody or securing further visitation rights.

The tragic events unfolded on July 24, 2020, when the Hartselle Police Department responded to a welfare check at a residence. This was prompted by Anthony Larry Sheppard’s failure to attend a scheduled custody hearing, causing concern for his well-being. Upon the request of his attorney, officers were dispatched to ensure his safety.

Upon reaching Sheppard’s home, police were confronted with a disturbing scene: the storm door was shattered, and the main door was left open, raising immediate alarm.

Upon arrival, police discovered Sheppard’s storm door shattered and the main door ajar.

Officers later found Sheppard dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators determined that Skuce hired Logan Delp to kill Sheppard in order to prevent him from gaining custody or further visitation with his child.

Prosecutors said Skuce used social media to hire the hitman, who lived in Hartselle, according to the Hartselle Enquirer. She allegedly offered to pay $30,000.

“There are never any winners in a case like this,” Chief Assistant District Attorney Garrick Vickery said following the verdict. “This jury was incredibly thorough and took their time to make sure they made the right decision, both for Mr. Sheppard and for the defendant.”

Vickery added, “We are glad that they convicted her for the choice she made to take Mr. Sheppard away from his family.”

Skuce was found guilty of three counts of capital murder: murder for hire, murder of a witness, and murder committed by shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Four other defendants have been charged with capital murder in connection with Sheppard’s death.

Delp was convicted of capital murder in October 2025, the DA’s office said. Another defendant has pleaded guilty, and two others are awaiting trial.

Skuce will be imprisoned without the possibility of parole in the Alabama Department of Corrections.

Jennifer Fessler Addresses West Wilson Hookup Allegations: New Statement Sheds Light

0

Jennifer Fessler delivered a sharp response following Ciara Miller’s social media allegations that the former “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star had an affair with West Wilson.

“Honestly, while it’s somewhat flattering, it’s not acceptable to spread false and damaging claims on social media, irrespective of whatever rumors or so-called ‘evidence’ you might have,” Fessler expressed in her Instagram Stories on Saturday.

“This is a textbook case of libel,” she further explained. “If it were true, I’d have no grounds for complaint. But since it’s a fabrication, things could get more legally intricate. That said, I hope we can resolve this matter. Enough is enough.”

Fessler’s firm reaction followed Miller, 30, who had dated Wilson for half a year in 2023, sharing a series of posts about the situation on Threads Friday night.

The controversy ignited after a social media user summarized Fessler’s remarks from her appearance at Vulture’s The Masterminds of Reality TV event on Thursday.

“Former RHONJ ‘friend of’ Jenn Fessler was asked by Page Six about the Summer House scandal tonight and said this about West: ‘[West] is the cutest, sweetest golden retriever puppy dog. He does not mean any harm. He didn’t mean it. He’s just trying to have a good time. He doesn’t wanna hurt anyone. Give him a break.’ Girl…”

Miller retorted by commenting, “lol, because they slept together too.”

A social media user pushed back in the comments, citing Fessler’s longtime marriage to Jeff Fessler.

“Ma’am! I beg your pardon?!?! Ain’t that old lady married? Oh he got a type,” to which Miller again replied, “That’s what I thought….” along with an emoji of a person cartwheeling.

Fessler, 57 — who tied the knot with Jeff Fessler in 1999 — exclusively told Page Six on Friday, “It’s flattering that anyone would think someone who slept with Ciara Miller would be interested in sleeping with me.”

Wilson, 31, took to social media with a denial of his own on Friday evening, tagging Fessler in an upload of a meme conveying confusion, and writing atop the image, “News to me.”

Ciara meanwhile, further fueled the fire with another re-share — this one showing Wilson’s current girlfriend, “Summer House” co-star Amanda Batula — lounging on a beach chair.

“If I send this to you I’m about to lie straight to your face,” the caption read.

Reps for Miller, Wilson, and Fessler have not responded to Page Six’s requests for comment on the social media drama.

Miller was close friends with Batula before she and Wilson announced they’re dating in a bombshell social media statement in March. As the announcement went public, Miller was seen crouched outside an Hermés boutique in anguish.

A source divulged to Page Six that the couple’s co-stars, including Miller and Batula’s estranged husband, Kyle Cooke, are “disappointed” in them, adding that the cast is generally “Team Ciara.” Miller unfollowed Batula, 34, and Wilson amid the fallout.

Another Bravo star stepped forward last month — “Southern Hospitality” personality Mia Alario openly questioned the couple’s relationship timeline after they claimed to have started spending time together in February.

Alario, 28, told Andy Cohen during an appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” last month that the duo was already spending time together when she went on one date with Wilson in September.

The TV personality said Batula told her she’d “pregamed” her date with Wilson ahead of time and that she gave the sports reporter “some advice and some tips” before their date.

Alario called the situation “messy” in speaking to Cohen. “I don’t want any part of that at all,” she said at the time.

Brace for Impact: Severe Storm Threat Looms Over Mother’s Day Celebrations

ORLANDO, Fla. – Sunday marks an important occasion, and we’re here to help you make the most of it!

Your Mother’s Day breakdown.

The first part of Mother’s Day will feature warm and muggy weather, but it will remain mostly dry. If you’re planning outdoor activities with your mom, like a beach visit or brunch in the open air, it’s best to schedule them before noon to avoid any rainfall. As the clock strikes noon, spotty storms are expected to develop near the I-75 corridor and move east-northeast. These scattered showers will persist across Central Florida throughout the afternoon, particularly along the coast where southwest winds meet a mild Atlantic sea breeze.

Scattered strong to severe storms possible Sunday afternoon,

Some of these storms may reach strong to severe levels, as the area is under a marginal risk for severe weather—a category one on a scale of five.

A marginal risk is in place for Central Florida Sunday.

Be prepared for potential hazards, including frequent lightning, gusty winds reaching 50 mph, and heavy downpours. Fortunately, these storms are anticipated to diminish after sunset.

Looking ahead to Monday, expect a similar pattern with scattered afternoon storms and a continued risk of severe weather. The marginal risk extends into Monday due to a cold front approaching northern Florida. Anticipate a comparable movement of showers from the west-southwest to east-northeast, with slightly more widespread coverage as the front progresses toward Central Florida. Temperatures will peak in the low to mid-90s, with heat indices soaring around 100 degrees before the rain provides some relief.

Coalition’s Future in Jeopardy: Navigating the Aftermath of a Devastating Defeat

0
The Coalition has existential questions to face after being smashed at the Farrer byelection by One Nation and an independent candidate.
David Farley won the seat in resounding fashion for One Nation the first time the minor party had won a seat in the federal House of Representatives and broke the Coalition’s 77 -ear stronghold on the rural New South Wales seat that was vacated by former Liberal leader Sussan Ley.
David Littleproud admitted it was a tough night for the Coalition, saying voters had sent a strong message.

“It’s essentially a traditional reprimand, that’s the reality we’re facing,” he remarked.

“We must confront it head-on and recognize that the constituents of Farrer are delivering a clear message.”

Littleproud suggested that the vote was a form of protest not only against the Liberal Party but also the Albanese administration. He emphasized the necessity for the Coalition to rally around core principles, which were seemingly abandoned after last year’s overwhelming election loss.

“The Coalition chose to distance itself from its policies, leaving us with no clear stance,” he explained.

An existential crisis faces Liberal Leader Angus Taylor. (Jason Robins)

“Meanwhile, Pauline Hanson, a shrewd political figure for three decades, stepped in to occupy that void and champion many of the principles we traditionally uphold.”

The Liberal Party recorded 12.6 per cent of the vote in the Farrar byelection with the Nationals getting just 9.76 per cent as of Sunday morning, with One Nation leading the two-party preferred vote against Independent Michelle Milthorpe by a margin of 7.3 per cent.

Nine News political editor Charles Croucher said the decimation of the Liberal Party vote was a sign it was losing more and more of Australia, after losing urban areas in large numbers at the two previous federal elections.

“They are running out of places to start winning seats,” he said.

Pauline Hanson and One Nation are taking up large swathes of voters from the right that previously voted for the Coalition. (Getty)

“It was going to be the party of the outer suburbs it clearly can’t be the party of the bush anymore if that’s the result that’s coming in.”

Croucher said the party was stuck between a rock and a hard place as forces on the left and right of politics continue to take voters the Liberal Party used to rely on for decades.

“What we’re seeing is the Liberal party being stuck between this surge of One Nation on the right, the climate-minded independent, and Labor who are winning in the cities,” he said.

“It’s squeezing the Liberal Party, the party of Menzies, Howard, what was naturally the party of government, out of contention at all.”
