US Launches Emergency Evacuation for 17 Americans Aboard Hantavirus-Stricken Cruise Ship

0

The United States is deploying an emergency aircraft to rescue 17 American citizens who remain stranded on a cruise ship plagued by a hantavirus outbreak.

The outbreak, which surfaced on the luxury cruise liner MV Hondius while en route to the Canary Islands earlier in April, has resulted in eight recorded hantavirus cases.

Of these, five have been confirmed as infections, while three remain under suspicion. Tragically, three individuals have succumbed to the virus, raising concerns about a potential widespread outbreak.

In response, the US joins multiple nations in efforts to assist nearly 140 passengers and crew who are trapped aboard the ill-fated ship.

Coordinated evacuations are anticipated to commence between Sunday and Monday, following the ship’s planned docking in Tenerife, in collaboration with Spanish authorities.

Passengers will be tested for hantavirus and will disembark, country by country, before boarding smaller boats in groups of five to head to shore for the plane ride.

The State Department told CBS News the plane is being chartered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services.

The CDC said Friday that they will provide their own ‘exposure risk assessment’ for the American passengers to help assess the level of monitoring needed.

The Americans will land at the Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, before going to the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s new state-of-the-art biocontainment unit.

The CDC will also be sending a team to the university for support.

All of the travelers will be quarantined on their own for the time being, according to Michael Wadman, medical director of the university’s National Quarantine Unit.

‘Each individual will have their own room,’ Wadman said, while adding that there is no standard quarantine period set for those being brought in.

‘Each of the rooms looks very much like a hotel room with the addition of availability of WiFi, exercise equipment. If the quarantine is prolonged, those would be important in terms of making sure they’re comfortable.’

The unit, which opened in 2019, comes from a $20 million Department of Health and Human Services grant, ABC News reported.

The dedicated biocontainment and quarantine unit in Omaha previously was used to treat Ebola patients and some of the first COVID-19 patients.

Nebraska Medicine is one of a handful of hospitals in the US with specialized treatment units for people with highly dangerous infectious diseases.

‘We are prepared for situations exactly like this,’ Dr. Michael Ash, CEO of Nebraska Medicine, said in a statement.

As of Friday, none of the American passengers on the MV Hondius has shown symptoms of hantavirus.

In interviews with The Associated Press, two Spanish passengers — speaking on condition of anonymity because of fears they’ll be ostracized once on land — said that despite the outbreak, their days aboard have passed with relative tranquility.

Some people are bird-watching, and others are gathering in common areas to read or attend talks, while wearing masks and social distancing.

Both passengers told AP they’re worried about how they’ll be treated in Spain and once home.

‘We’re scared by all the news that’s coming out, by how people are going to receive us, by how people see us,’ one said.

‘We’re just normal people. We’ve heard that this is a millionaires’ cruise, and it’s the complete opposite of reality. And we’re scared by this.’

Images of hazmat-suited medical workers airlifting gravely ill passengers from the MV Hondius earlier this week were hauntingly reminiscent of the darkest days of the Covid pandemic.

Meanwhile, nine passengers who previously left the stricken vessel are now under home quarantine and being closely monitored, including Americans in six states – Arizona, California, Georgia, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia.

In the latest worrying twist, a Spanish woman who was on the same flight as a passenger who later died from the disease has reportedly been hospitalized with a suspected infection.

She was said to have been ‘two rows behind the person who died’ and had ‘only brief contact’. No further details have been released.

Hantavirus is usually spread through breathing in dust contaminated with infected rodent urine, saliva or droppings – often during sweeping or cleaning.

However, the Andes virus (ANDV) strain identified in the MV Hondius outbreak is unusual because limited person-to-person transmission has previously been documented.

Most hantavirus infections do not lead to severe disease. In many cases, people may develop only mild flu-like symptoms – or none at all.

However, some patients go on to develop Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), a rare but potentially devastating condition in which the lungs begin to fill with fluid, leading to severe breathing difficulties, dangerously low blood pressure and, in the worst cases, respiratory failure and death.

The CDC says about 38 per cent of patients who develop the respiratory phase of HPS die from the illness.

In 2025, hantavirus made headlines after Betsy Arakawa, 65 – the wife of legendary Hollywood actor Gene Hackman – died from the infection at the couple’s home in Santa Fe.

Hackman, 95, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and cardiovascular problems, is believed to have died about a week later from unrelated causes.

Those most at risk of severe illness are believed to include older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone exposed to a high dose of the virus – for example through prolonged exposure to contaminated rodent droppings or dust. In the US, hantavirus remains extremely rare.

The CDC says 890 cases were reported between 1993 and the end of 2023 – an average of about 30 cases a year.

Worldwide, however, the WHO estimates there are between 10,000 and more than 100,000 infections annually, with the largest burden in Asia and Europe.

The Andes strain involved in the MV Hondius outbreak is considered particularly concerning because it is one of the hantaviruses linked to severe pulmonary disease and the only strain known to spread between people in limited circumstances.

However, experts say the strain involved in the cruise ship outbreak is not significant different to other Andes virus outbreaks, and shows no signs of mutation.

The World Health Organization considers the risk to the wider public from the outbreak as low.

On Friday, the WHO said a flight attendant on a plane briefly boarded by an infected cruise passenger has tested negative for hantavirus. Her possible infection had raised concerns about the virus’ potential transmissibility.

However, the outbreak has inevitably raised alarm – not least because hantavirus is little known outside medical circles, has no specific cure, and can in some cases trigger catastrophic lung failure within days.

Symptoms usually begin between one and eight weeks after exposure.

The CDC says Andes virus is the only hantavirus known to spread between people, and even then transmission is generally limited to close contact with someone who is ill.

They advise anyone who develops symptoms after a possible hantavirus exposure to seek medical attention promptly.

Warning signs include fever, muscle aches, breathing difficulties, chest tightness, severe weakness or symptoms developing after known exposure to rodents or an infected person.

In those circumstances, doctors say people should seek urgent medical advice and inform healthcare providers about any possible hantavirus exposure.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that the virus is ‘very much, we hope, under control.’

‘We have a lot of people, a lot of great people, studying it,’ Trump added. ‘It should be fine, we hope.’

Breakthrough in 84-Year-Old Nancy Guthrie’s Abduction: Sheriff Nanos Reveals Key Developments

0

EXCLUSIVE: TUCSON, Ariz. — Chris Nanos, the Sheriff of Pima County, is spearheading the investigation into the presumed kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie. On Friday, he shared with Fox News Digital that the team dedicated to the case is making headway nearly 100 days after Guthrie disappeared from her residence in the Catalina Foothills.

When asked if the investigators are any closer to cracking the case as they near the 100-day mark, Nanos confidently responded, “We are.”

With a nod, he described the recent advancements as “really great” before stepping into his white Corvette. However, he chose not to divulge further details.

Late last month, a private forensic lab in Florida sent a hair sample to the FBI for more advanced analysis.

Experts have told Fox News Digital the hair could be used for investigative or forensic genetic genealogy if it doesn’t match anyone known to have been in Guthrie’s home, potentially pointing a task force of county detectives and FBI agents toward a suspect.

Relatives and workers who had reason to be at Guthrie’s home have previously given voluntary DNA samples, so the hair could point to a suspect if it doesn’t match any of them.

“Building DNA profiles from hair or other forensic evidence does not necessarily take long,” said Dr. David Mittelman, co-founder of Othram, a leading private forensics laboratory.

“In the ‘Idaho Four’ murders, for example, the DNA profile was developed within days. The challenge in forensic genetic genealogy is not simply generating a DNA profile, but generating a high-quality profile. Poor-quality or incomplete DNA profiles can make genetic genealogy difficult, ambiguous, or even impossible.”

That’s because an incomplete profile can lead researchers to miss potential familial connections that could help find a suspect.

“If you don’t have a good profile, you may not see all the genetic relatives,” he added. “It can be harder to resolve how people are related or not.”

Nanos said previously that investigators believe Guthrie was taken from her home around 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 1.

Deputies arrived around noon that day after her daughter and son-in-law called 911 to report her missing.

Since then, the FBI obtained Nest doorbell imagery with the help of Google that shows a masked man of average height and build carrying a holstered pistol at Guthrie’s front steps around the time of her abduction.

A man in similar clothing was spotted about three weeks earlier approaching her door again.

He has not been publicly identified, but retired FBI profiler Jim Clemente told Fox News Digital this week that he believes the suspect made a number of mistakes that could help investigators identify him, if someone in his inner circle doesn’t come forward first.

There is a combined reward of more than $1.2 million to solve the case.

Discover 7 Common Foods to Help Reduce Belly Fat Quickly

Discover which simple foods can help you reduce belly fat quickly, as advised by a leading dietitian.

If you’re looking to shed those extra inches around your waist, it’s often a mix of diet and exercise that does the trick. Some foods are particularly effective in burning fat, according to Tara Collingwood, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD/N, ACSM-CPT, also known as The Diet Diva. As a Board-Certified Sports Dietitian and co-author of Flat Belly Cookbook for Dummies, Collingwood recently shared her top picks for foods that promote fat loss. Here are seven everyday items she recommends for quickly reducing stubborn belly fat.

First on Collingwood’s list is the avocado. “Rich in monounsaturated fats, avocados help regulate blood sugar, curb cravings, and keep you feeling satisfied longer, which aids in reducing belly fat,” she explains. Avocados can be enjoyed in a variety of ways, such as in salads, mashed on toast, or as a side dish with any meal. However, it’s wise to enjoy them in moderation, as they are relatively high in calories.

Avocados

Eggs are another highly versatile and nutrient-rich food that can aid in weight loss. “With their high-quality protein, eggs promote a feeling of fullness, stabilize blood sugar levels, and increase the number of calories your body burns during digestion (known as the thermic effect of food),” Collingwood notes. They can quickly satisfy your hunger, but since they contain fat and calories, you might consider pairing whole eggs with egg whites to boost protein intake without significantly increasing calorie consumption.

What is the first food Collingwood recommends to shrink belly fat? Avocados. “Loaded with healthy fats (monounsaturated), avocados help regulate blood sugar, reduce cravings, and keep you feeling full longer, aiding in belly fat reduction,” she says. There are lots of ways to enjoy an avocado. You can add them to a salad, mash them up and make avocado toast, or eat them as a side with breakfast, lunch, or dinner. However, try not to overdo it, as they do have a decent amount of calories.

Eggs

Eggs are one of the most versatile foods, and a great source of nutrients if you are trying to lose weight. “Packed with high-quality protein, eggs promote satiety, stabilize blood sugar, and help your body burn more calories for digestion (the thermic effect of food),” says Collingwood. They also fill you up fast. Again, they do have a decent amount of fat and calories, so consider mixing an egg or two with egg whites to add protein without much caloric impact.

Berries

Shutterstock

Berries, including blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries, are another excellent food for shrinking belly fat, according to Collingwood. “Berries are low in calories and high in fiber and antioxidants, which fight inflammation and support fat loss, especially around the belly,” she says. There are many ways to enjoy berries, either fresh or frozen. You can eat them on their own, add them to yogurt or cereal, or blend them in a smoothie.

Olive Oil

Olive oil may be fatty, but it’s the good kind and will help you burn fat. It’s a “healthy fat that helps control appetite and supports fat metabolism,” says Collingwood. “A drizzle on salads or in cooking can make a difference without overloading calories.”

Nuts

Nuts are another healthy fat to help you burn fat. This includes almonds, walnuts, and pistachios. “Rich in healthy fats and protein, nuts help curb cravings, stabilize blood sugar, and promote a healthy metabolism. Just stick to a small handful per day!” says Collingwood. You can eat a handful of nuts as a snack, toss them in your salad, or use them when cooking your favorite meals.

Beans and Lentils

Shutterstock

Beans, including white, black, and pinto, and lentils, are another belly fat-blasting food, according to Collingwood. “High in fiber and protein, they stabilize blood sugar and improve digestion, helping you feel full longer,” she says. They will also help you feel full faster. You can serve them as a side dish or even add them to a salad for an extra dose of nutrients.

Leafy Greens

Another food that will help burn belly fat? Leafy greens. Collingwood recommends spinach, kale, and arugula. “Low-calorie, nutrient-dense, and high in fiber—greens aid digestion, reduce bloating, and help create a calorie deficit for fat loss,” she says. Make them into a salad, sauté them as a side dish, or add them to your egg scramble for an extra dose of yum.

Bonus Tip

Collingwood offers the following bonus tip. “Of course, one food alone will not shrink belly fat.  Combine these with hydration, exercise, and sleep for best results!” she says.

Rita Ora and Taika Waititi’s Adorable PDA Moment Melts Hearts Online

Rita Ora’s husband, Taika Waititi, has emerged as her most ardent supporter, despite his own flourishing career as a Hollywood director, boasting a net worth of £13 million.

During the Met Gala, Taika, 48, earned the affectionate title of her ‘Instagram husband,’ as he was seen adjusting her dress and capturing photos of her on the red carpet. This occurred even as he enjoys immense success both in directing and acting.

The acclaimed director, with a substantial net worth, consistently steps aside to allow his singer wife to shine in the spotlight.

After their collaborative appearance at the prestigious event, the New Zealand-born filmmaker once again took a backseat, accompanying his camera-loving wife, 33, on a romantic boat excursion, allowing her to bask in the attention.

Though Rita’s Instagram might project Taika as the secondary star, his remarkable filmography and overflowing awards cabinet—which includes an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for the 2020 film “Jojo Rabbit”—tell a different story.

In what is one of the biggest weeks of the year, Taika ensured he didn’t steal the spotlight from the British star.

As they graced the Met carpet earlier this week, Taika made headlines for becoming Rita’s biggest supporting act. He was seen standing closely behind Rita, fixing her barely-there outfit whilst she posed for the cameras.

His background-style work comes in stark contrast to his prominence in the film industry – particularly led by Jojo Rabbit, which also won Best Screenplay at AACTA Awards and a number of gongs at the American Film Institute Awards.

He has also been nominated for a BAFTA, a Grammy and two Emmy nominations. In 2022 Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Like many filmmakers of his ilk, Taika also has Marvel films under his belt, including 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.

In addition to directing an episode of Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian, he also voiced the character IG-11, for which he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance.

Taika was previously married to film producer wife Chelsea Winstanley for six years before they separately quietly in 2018.

Rita explained that she had wanted to celebrate women’s existence with her look and that beauty can ‘stand the test of time’.

She also revealed the beading on the dress dates back to 1st and 2nd century BC and is sourced from all over the world, saying: ‘I think some of these beads are older than people on the planet.’

She told Entertainment Tonight: ‘Hi guys, I’m wearing a necklace this year at the Met. This is about the beauty of the body and women’s existence and presence. [It’s about] not doing as much but also doing a lot, you see what I mean? And these beads are from actually second century BC.’

Taika was then asked what he made of his wife’s look and hailed the ensemble as ‘incredible’ before adding: ‘I looked at all the details of every bead, thousands of years.’

But Rita admitted while she had planned the outfit out extensively, she had failed to think about the practicalities of going to the bathroom and had no spare clothes to change into.

She confessed: ‘No, I don’t [have anything else], I also didn’t think about the bathroom so I might just have to poke a hole in the stocking!’

Actor Nick Pasqual Convicted in Attempted Murder Case Involving Makeup Artist Allie Shehorn Stabbing

0

An actor, driven by a frenzy, was convicted of attempted murder on Friday after attacking his former partner, a celebrated Hollywood make-up artist, by stabbing her over 20 times during a violent home intrusion.

Nick Pasqual, known for his roles in various series, including “How I Met Your Mother,” now faces the prospect of a life sentence for his heinous assault on Allie Shehorn at her residence in Sunland, California, back in May 2024.

During the trial at the San Fernando Courthouse, Shehorn bravely showed the jury the scars that bear witness to the attack, as reported by ABC7. She recounted her ordeal in court, sharing the chilling details of Pasqual’s aggression.

In her emotional testimony, the 37-year-old make-up artist described the frightening behavior that led to their breakup and her subsequent decision to obtain a restraining order against him. Her narrative painted a vivid picture of the tumultuous relationship.

“I secured the door, but he began punching through it until it shattered,” Shehorn recounted tearfully, according to the news outlet. “I fled to the bathroom, hoping the extra lock would keep me safe.”

Pasqual, 36, was found guilty of attempted murder, forcible rape, first-degree residential burglary with person present and injuring a spouse, cohabitant, fiancé, boyfriend, girlfriend or child’s parent and domestic violence, according to court records viewed by The Post.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 2.

Shehorn was found by her surrogate mother after the bloody carnage that took place at around 4:30 a.m. and rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where she underwent multiple surgeries.

She suffered multiple slashes to her neck as well as cuts on her arms and abdomen, spending nearly a week fighting for her life in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

Pasqual fled California after the stabbing was nabbed at the border, trying to cross into Mexico in Sierra Blanca, Texas, on May 30 — seven days after he attacked Shehorn.

Pasqual had allegedly attacked his then-girlfriend at least four times before the violent stabbing.

In her restraining order, Shehorn accused Pasqual of using a belt, breaking down doors, leaving her with a concussion and raping and choking her.

A year before the attack, Shehorn had won “Best SFX Makeup” at the Hollywood Blood Horror Festival for her work on “Incorrigible.”

She has also worked on films “Rebel Moon: Part One,” and “Babylon.”

Shehorn returned to the make-up industry after recovering from her injuries and has nine credits since 2025 including Rainn Wilson’s action-comedy “Code 3.”

The March international break serves as the optimal period for agents and club executives to engage in discussions concerning the upcoming summer transfer window. This annual tradition provides a strategic opportunity to align on future moves.

This year is no exception, with numerous meetings taking place over the past ten days. These discussions are crucial, especially for clubs like Manchester United, as they lay the groundwork for their summer activities, ideally planning ahead of this year’s World Cup.

This week’s edition of Man United Confidential seeks to address your pressing questions on these developments.

A particularly intriguing question surrounds Anderson, a topic that remained somewhat ambiguous even after his appearance with England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, on Monday.

For several months, Anderson has been Manchester United’s top target, a pursuit that has been confirmed in earlier reports. The anticipation surrounding his potential move continues to captivate fans and analysts alike.

United’s recruitment team work from shortlists when it comes to their targets and that paid off with moves for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo last summer. Anderson is seen at United as the player that would raise the quality of the midfield the most due to his wide-ranging skillset as a hybrid No 6/No 8.

The issue those in agent circles speak of around Anderson is that Manchester City also have the Nottingham Forest midfielder as priority No 1 and they are understood to be ahead in the race right now.

Elliot Anderson is Manchester United's No1 target and has been for several months. The only problem? Manchester City want him too

Elliot Anderson is Manchester United’s No1 target and has been for several months. The only problem? Manchester City want him too

While we are not at a ‘done deal’ stage yet – United wouldn’t be pursuing meetings and still pushing for him if that were the case – the word right now is that City are looking to accelerate their move prior to the World Cup, with both Manchester clubs wary that Anderson’s £100m price tag could rise even further if he impresses in North America.

With meetings ongoing and more expected to come out across the next 10 to 14 days on situations around big-name players, United need to make a big play to try and blow City – who are increasingly confident they will be able to start a midfield rebuild with Anderson as the centrepiece – out of the water.

Is Sandro Tonali still in the mix?

In short, yes.

But suggestions last week that a deal was about to be struck, or close to agreement, were premature and too strong, leading to a downplaying of it all as of today.

Tonali would be expensive, that much we know, but there is a belief that Newcastle will sell a major asset this summer and would rather it not be Bruno Guimaraes or Lewis Hall.

The Italian remains high on United’s board and while some insiders have been keen to cool talk around him in the past few days, his name is not going to disappear off it, especially if Anderson to City edges closer.

United have spent recent months determined to land at least one A-grade midfielder, with Anderson top of their wishlist.

But Tonali is expected to be a moveable asset – albeit an expensive one – this summer and when that materialises, expect United to be front of the queue.

What about Adam Wharton?

Wharton is another midfielder in United’s thinking, albeit behind both Anderson and Tonali, and will likely prove a major domino in this summer’s window.

Confidential can reveal that Real Madrid are back in play here and the Spanish giants sent a scout to watch him live in the past fortnight.

Madrid’s plan this summer is to sign Nico Paz from Como, and then add a second central midfielder, with Wharton understood to be third on that list behind Rodri and Enzo Fernandez, who is eager to leave Chelsea.

Chelsea, who have also asked to be kept up to date with Wharton’s situation, are another rival for his signature.

United like Wharton, whom insiders expect to be available in the £60-70m region, but there are some concerns that his style of play is too similar to Kobbie Mainoo’s and that they would not be able to operate as a partnership.

Despite financial concerns at Crystal Palace – they will sell Jean-Philippe Mateta and Daichi Kamada will leave as a free agent – Confidential has been told the London side are not under pressure to sell Wharton as some have previously suggested.

If Plan A is Anderson, and Plan B is Tonali, Wharton finds himself closer to being Plan C.

Adam Wharton, though talented, could be described as United's Plan C this summer. There are some concerns his style of play may not mesh perfectly with Kobbie Mainoo

Are there any other midfielders to keep an eye on?

Tyler Adams is one of the names that has cropped up a fair few times in recent days, namely because his stats score so highly among United’s data team.

We know now how much United are eager to lean on data and the team led by Michael Sansoni, and Adams is said to score particularly highly on numerous metrics.

The issue here is that Bournemouth are likely to want the bidding to start at around £40m, a fee few in the game expect United to come anywhere close to meeting.

United have maintained contact around Carlos Baleba since last summer, touching base again in January, and while Brighton have no intention of selling on the cheap, his form this season is expected to trigger a reduction in his fee.

The positive with Baleba is that personal terms are a non-issue, but key to any potential purchase is his asking price, and who United can get from their primary list as a potential midfield partner.

Joao Gomes remains among the list of names in the bracket of a more ‘budget-friendly’ addition.

So, will Manuel Ugarte leave?

This one is gathering momentum.

While United are not actively touting around the Uruguayan, Ajax, Galatasaray, Napoli and Juventus are all interested and have had him watched by scouts in recent weeks.

Ugarte’s preference is to play in a top-five European league, which hurts the cases of Ajax and Galatasaray, but their interest remains the most longstanding.

Like a lot of players, Ugarte wants clarity around his club future before heading to the World Cup with Uruguay, which means the next eight weeks are crucial.

Ugarte is understood to believe he can make a big contribution to a team and having been largely kept on the periphery under Michael Carrick, United’s midfield overhaul this summer does little to inspire belief that his minutes are set to explode next season.

And what about Joshua Zirkzee?

I had an interesting conversation in the past week around the future of Zirkzee at United.

It was Man United Confidential that reported last year how Zirkzee was keen to depart in a bid to get more minutes and strengthen his hopes of making it to the World Cup.

But the word now is that Zirkzee is eager to stay at United and firmly believes he will get chances under Michael Carrick once the club return to European football.

Now, Zirkzee’s desire to stay may not be enough to see him remain beyond the end of the season but there is a difference between other names being linked with an exit this summer. My information is that Zirkzee is determined to stay and make an impact next season.

Sources close to the player are not convinced that United will bolster their attack in this coming off-season and with more games added to the schedule, Zirkzee believes Carrick will give him more opportunities to play.

He is particularly close with Patrick Dorgu and Mainoo and while there are teams in Italy who are keen – and were in January – this is not a player pushing to leave, which gives United a decision to make.

What other departures can we expect?

We already know Casemiro is leaving at the end of the season but an interesting row around the Brazilian has surfaced in the United States.

Inter Miami have spoken to Casemiro, as have LA Galaxy, but numerous MLS teams are furious at the suggestion Miami have the capacity to bring the United midfielder in.

MLS teams are allowed three Designated Player (DP) slots and those are already allocated to Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and German Berterame.

Furious rival franchises have raised concerns with MLS and are insisting that Casemiro can only be paid $1.8million by Inter Miami to ensure his signing fits into salary cap rules, a huge wage cut that simply isn’t possible. Keep an eye on this situation.

Don’t expect Marcus Rashford to play for United again, even if Barcelona’s attempts at haggling down a permanent price fail.

Don’t expect Marcus Rashford to play for United again – even if Barcelona don’t commit to the £26million option in his loan deal

United have no desire to renegotiate the £26m option they previously agreed with Barcelona when his loan move was sanctioned.

There is also the sense that even if he does return to United following the expiration of the Barcelona loan, multiple offers with better financial returns will arrive for Rashford.

But sources have played down suggestions Rashford – who is keen to strike a deal to stay with Barcelona – will play for United again, with issues surrounding his exit extending beyond just Ruben Amorim.

Andre Onana’s salary is set for a bump if United return to the Champions League – which looks likely – and he wants an opportunity to try and reclaim the No 1 spot, while Radek Vitek has limited interest in returning from loan at Bristol City to be a back-up. The 22-year-old could bring in around £10m.

Eric Clapton, 81, Abruptly Exits Stage After Being Struck by Object Thrown by Fan

Eric Clapton was compelled to end his concert prematurely after an unexpected incident during his performance. The 81-year-old rock and blues icon was on stage at Movistar Arena in Spain, delighting fans as part of his European tour, when the unforeseen interruption occurred on Friday night.

Clapton was reportedly gearing up for an encore following his hit song, “Cocaine,” when an object hurled from the audience struck him. The object, a vinyl record still in its packaging, hit the legendary musician squarely in the chest.

Social media has since been abuzz with videos capturing the shocking moment. In the footage, the object can be seen hurtling toward Clapton, making contact and then dropping to the floor. The impact visibly altered his demeanor, as his smile disappeared upon being hit.

Without a word, Clapton abruptly exited the stage, and concert attendees reported that he did not return to complete his performance.

In response, Spanish fans have voiced their disapproval online, expressing their frustration and condemning the individual responsible for cutting short what should have been a memorable finale.

One user wrote: “What a shameless jerk, the one who threw the vinyl.”

One attendee described the evening as “by far the worst” concert they had witnessed, criticising the lack of interaction with the audience.

“No hello, no goodbye, no band intro, no energy, no encore — just boredom with a guitar,” the user complained.

Spanish newspaper El País reported that the person who launched the record had not intended to cause harm, having attached a note of affection to the vinyl.

The identity of the thrower remains unknown.

His European tour continues this weekend, with a performance scheduled at Barcelona’s Palau Sant Jordi on May 10 before dates in Germany the following week.

The Ripley-born guitarist will perform just one UK date as part of his tour, which lands on August 23 at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, where he’ll be joined by Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood.

Tragedy Strikes: Mother of Seven Fatally Shot While Shielding Kids at High School Soccer Match

0

A tragic incident unfolded at a Michigan elementary school soccer game when a teenager allegedly shot and killed a 15-year-old boy and a mother of seven. Authorities report the woman was attempting to protect children from the gunfire.

Savanah Rubio, a cherished 38-year-old mother, lost her life as she courageously tried to assist Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin, the 15-year-old victim who also succumbed to his injuries.

Grand Rapids law enforcement has charged 18-year-old Rafael Martinez-Lopez with multiple counts of murder and weapon-related offenses following the Tuesday evening shooting at Southwest Elementary School in Grand Rapids.

The altercation began around 6:30 p.m. when Martinez-Lopez approached a group of children engaged in a soccer game, expressing a desire to participate.

After he or his younger brother was denied entry, the situation escalated into a deadly confrontation, resulting in the deaths of the devoted mother and the young boy.

Cops say Martinez-Lopez also tried to shoot another child, but the weapon failed to fire.

The shocking bloodshed has devastated the western Michigan community, forcing two nearby schools to temporarily close as grieving families struggle to comprehend how an ordinary evening soccer game turned so deadly.

On Friday, Martinez-Lopez appeared in court, where he acknowledged the murder and weapons charges against him before a judge ordered him held without bond.

Grand Rapids police said the teen suspect faces two counts of open murder, multiple felony firearm charges and additional weapons offenses.

Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg described the attack as a horrifying act of senseless violence that deeply affected even veteran officers.

‘We have care and concern for all victims, but this kind of senseless violence just hits differently, even for long-serving officers like myself,’ Trigg said in a statement. ‘We are grieving alongside their loved ones and our community.’

He praised responding officers for rendering aid, securing the scene and apprehending the suspect ‘without further violence.’

Family members said Rubio died exactly as she lived – trying to protect others.

‘She guarded Jeremiah in her last moment,’ family friend Alana Crooks told News 8. ‘She played her role exactly as she was supposed to as a mother and a guardian.’

‘Savanah and Jeremiah should not be dead right now,’ Crooks added. ‘They shouldn’t.’

A GoFundMe page was set up to help pay for the teenager’s funeral.

Rubio, also known as Savanah Villarreal, leaves behind seven children along with a devastated husband now facing life without her.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to aide her kids aged 17, 15, 13, nine, eight, seven and three.

Friends described her as a woman who was constantly helping struggling families and lifting up others in the community despite hardships of her own.

Crooks said Rubio became deeply involved with her nonprofit ministry, The Salty Mama: It Takes A Village, which distributes groceries and household supplies to families in need.

According to Crooks, Rubio was among the ministry’s very first families to receive assistance and later became one of its biggest supporters and advocates.

‘She would sign up and she would benefit from that. Her and her family would,’ Crooks said tearfully. ‘Once I made the Facebook page to make it more official, she followed, she supported.’

Crooks said Rubio tirelessly connected struggling families with resources and support.

‘They say like everybody’s within six degrees of each other,’ she said. ‘It’s like she was that person that connected all of us.’

Even amid overwhelming grief, Crooks said she also mourned the destruction caused by the alleged shooter’s actions.

‘My first feeling, once I was told, was I felt like three people died that night because I believe that that young man threw his life away by taking two lives,’ she said.

Jeremiah’s family described the teenager as deeply kindhearted, faithful and committed to helping others.

His mother, Mildred Griffin, said her son had become increasingly devoted to church and youth programs in recent months.

‘Youth group every Wednesday, church every Sunday, as a 15-year-old young man,’ Griffin said.

‘Somebody stole from me, and that’s something I can’t get back.’

Griffin said Rubio was far more than simply a family friend.

‘She gave her life to save my son,’ Griffin said. ‘He considered Savanah his auntie.’

Neighbors and community members have been left stunned that such a trivial dispute could end in catastrophic violence.

According to police filings, Martinez-Lopez allegedly attempted to fire at another child after shooting Jeremiah and Rubio, but the gun malfunctioned.

Authorities say the suspect fled after the shooting but was later found at a nearby home and arrested.

His attorney, Craig Jenison, said Martinez-Lopez had no prior criminal record.

Major $20.7M Land Acquisition Displaces Siesta Key Businesses: What This Means for the Local Economy

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Established businesses in the vicinity of Siesta Key are facing eviction as Sarasota County has sanctioned a costly acquisition of prime waterfront real estate.

Several proprietors are hastily searching for new locations, with a tight deadline looming next Thursday.

The Sarasota County commissioners made a decision on Tuesday to invest $20.7 million in the purchase of the two-acre Stickney Point site, situated near the southern entrance to Siesta Key.

Nonetheless, the future of the property remains uncertain.

“Our plans are still in the works,” explained Shawn Yeager, the interim director of Parks, Recreation, and Natural Resources for Sarasota County. “Potential uses might include a fishing and kayak launch, but ensuring public access to the water is our primary concern.”

The property is currently home to more than 20 commercial parcels and several longtime businesses, like Siesta Key Watersports.

“I’ve worked here since I was 20 and to have this be taken away from us has been really heartbreaking,” said Ben Marchand, co-owner of Siesta Key Watersports.

They’re being forced to relocate in less than a week, after operating here for more than 20 years.

Marchand said moving a commercial marine business is not simple.

“To be honest, it’s just shock trying to think of what to do next,” Marchand said. “We have a lot of work to do. The biggest issue is going to be the floating jet ski docks that we have; to be able to remove those, clean them and get them out of here will be a big task.”

The company also said the move impacts not only the business, but the employees and families connected to it.

“We raised our families here,” said Shawn Fontana, co-owner of Siesta Key Watersports. “It’s a lot more than a dock to us. This is where we brought families. We’ve built this over a long period of time to make it something special for everybody.”

While the owners said they support preserving waterfront access, they wish there had been more open discussion before the deal was finalized.

“It’s heartbreaking that it’s not going to be at least at this location anymore, but we’re optimistic about a new place and what we can do with it,” said Fontana.

“We feel for them and understand, and at the same time we’re just looking forward to getting in there and providing public water access,” Yeager said. “Who knows, maybe down the road we can look at opportunities for businesses to operate out of there to.”

Businesses on the Stickney Point property are being told they must vacate by May 14.

Georgia Town Revives Police Department Following Mayor’s Controversial Mass Firing

0

In a surprising turn of events, the police force of a small Georgia town has been reinstated after a dramatic dismissal by the mayor. The decision to bring back the officers came on Friday, following a significant backlash from the community and decisive intervention by the town council.

During an urgent meeting, the Cohutta Town Council unanimously agreed to reinstate the officers immediately and ensure they receive back pay, as confirmed by the town’s vice mayor to The Associated Press. This swift action underscores the importance of the police department to the town’s roughly 1,000 residents.

In a bid to prevent further abrupt decisions, the council introduced a temporary measure that restricts Mayor Ron Shinnick from firing the officers for the next 30 days. However, other items on the agenda, such as a proposal to potentially remove Mayor Shinnick, were postponed for future discussion.

This move comes after Mayor Shinnick’s unexpected decision on Wednesday to disband the Cohutta Police Department, leaving the community without its ten-member police force. The drastic measure raised concerns and led to widespread criticism within the town.

Interestingly, this development follows what was reportedly a successful resolution of issues between the officers and the mayor through open dialogue and mediation just a week prior. This unexpected firing, therefore, came as a shock, adding to the tension and urgency of the council’s response.

The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies would assist the town, which is located just south of the Tennessee line and about 100 miles northwest of Atlanta.

A sign posted on the department’s door earlier this week read, “The PD has been dissolved, and all personnel have been terminated.”

While the exact reasons for the firings have not been publicly disclosed, the shutdown appears tied to a dispute last month after officers filed formal complaints against former town clerk Pam Shinnick, the mayor’s wife.

Pam Shinnick was fired from her position for allegedly creating a “hostile work environment.” Officers alleged in their complaints that she continued working and had access to residents’ personal information despite her termination.

Following the complaints, Shinnick, Police Chief Greg Fowler and town attorney Bryan Rayburn said during a press conference that the situation had been resolved through “open dialogue and good-faith mediation.”

But just one week later, the entire department was dissolved.

“This all comes to personal vendetta from the mayor, and I wholeheartedly believe that,” former Sgt. Jeremy May told WRCB-TV. “We took a stand for transparency, and in result, every one of them has lost their jobs.”

According to Vice Mayor Shane Kornberg, the town’s attorney told the council the firings did not follow the town charter, which requires 30 days’ notice before employees can be removed or suspended.

Kornberg said the council went into executive session to discuss potential litigation and emerged without the mayor, who did not return to the meeting. The council then voted to reinstate the police force.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the mayor’s office for comment.
