Immediate Fuel Price Surge Anticipated Following Oil Refinery Fire

0

The refinery, when operating at full capacity, has the ability to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil each day. This output includes a variety of fuels such as petrol, diesel, LPG, and jet fuel.

It plays a crucial role in the region, supplying over half of Victoria’s fuel needs and accounting for 10 percent of Australia’s overall fuel supply.

Industry experts have issued warnings that the recent incident is expected to trigger disruptions in the supply chain and could lead to a surge in fuel prices both in Victoria and on a broader scale.

“Initially it’s going to have an effect because there will be less supply, [we] should see a pickup in price,” Senior Lecturer from the School of Economics at The University of Sydney Dr Luke Hartigan told Nine.com.au.

“Having the refinery out of commission at this time is definitely concerning,” one expert noted.

They added, “Under usual circumstances, resolving such issues typically requires time. However, given the current situation, it’s possible that the impacts could be felt immediately.”

The impact will be felt initially in Victoria, where Viva Energy supplies most of its fuel.

Fuel prices and shortages may also worsen as national output shrinks at the refinery, Hartigan said.

“If you think about what happened with the Strait of Hormuz, that is 20 per cent [of global oil supply], and you can see that effect around the world,” Hartigan said.

“Even in a small part, when you’ve got restricted supply, it means it could have an effect.”

Hartigan said the fire will likely “dull the benefits” of the federal government’s efforts to ease supply and price pain, including the temporary excise reduction.

Swinburne’s Professor of Transport Technology and Sustainability Hussein Dia said any positive progress made by the Victorian state government may be reversed, including the impacts of offering free public transport for the month of April.

“It’s not just a shock to supply, but it is a loss of flexibility, and that’s what’s going to put upward pressure on prices, despite what the government has been doing,” Dia said.

“This was unexpected, and the government has been trying to shield consumers by the cutting of the fuel excise, and in Victoria, we have the free public transport.”

Dia said fuel prices in Victoria will likely grow, but said it might not be a “dramatic” spike at the pump tomorrow.

“The system was already under pressure and now it’s operating with less buffer, and that will likely show up in prices over time,” he added.

The flow-on effect of the Geelong fire could also touch the supermarket supply chain if Victorian farmers lose even more access to diesel.

“There’s less access to food because if trucks can’t get diesel, then they can’t deliver food,” Hartigan said.

“There’s the worry that there’s an impact on pricing… and that there is less supply of diesel now because that refinery is [partially] offline.”

Undercover inspectors are doing random checks to stop service stations from price gouging amid the fuel crisis.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen earlier said the blaze will worsen Australia’s national fuel supply as the refinery slashes its production, describing it as “not a positive development”.

“There will be an impact on production,” Bowen told Today.

“At this point, production of jet fuel and diesel is continuing at the refinery at reduced levels for safety reasons as a precaution. At this point, the impact is mainly on petrol production.”

Australia’s only other operating oil refinery, the Ampol Lytton Refinery in Brisbane, may need to fill in the gaps left by Viva Energy’s reduced output.

The Brisbane refinery also provides about 10 per cent of Australia’s fuel.

The remainder is imported from overseas, including the Middle East and Singapore.

“It will be a delicate balance between trying to get it to work a bit longer but not trying to work it too hard,” Hartigan added.

Dukes of Hazzard Icon Catherine Bach Wows Fans with Stunning Post-Hospitalization Photo

These days, Catherine Bach has every reason to beam with joy.

The actress, best known for her iconic portrayal of Daisy Duke in the popular television show “The Dukes of Hazzard,” recently delighted her fans by posting a vibrant selfie on Instagram.

With a friend by her side, Bach exuded confidence in a striking red blouse paired with jeans, accentuated by smokey eyes, tousled hair, and a glossy nude lip.

Captioning the photo with a simple yet heartfelt “FAMILY” and a heart emoji, the star marked her 72nd birthday on March 1.

In another post, the duo radiated happiness, sharing a warm embrace at Halls Chophouse, a renowned steakhouse in Nashville.

“Through so many of life’s milestones, we’re more than friends, we’re family! Xoxo,” she wrote.

Many took to the comments section to praise Bach’s latest appearance.

“Hello Miss Daisy Duke!” one follower wrote.

“I bet you could still pull off Daisy Dukes!” another chimed.

“Still smoking!” another wrote.

Bach appeared to be in good spirits after she had a health scare in October. According to multiple reports, she was hospitalized for an embolism.

Fox News Digital reached out to Bach’s spokesperson for comment.

On Halloween, John Schneider, who played Bo Duke in the beloved series, took to his Facebook page to share the news.

“Attention Dukes of Hazzard family!!” the actor wrote. “I just texted Catherine, and thankfully, she responded right away. Yes, she is in the hospital, but she assures me that she is going to be fine.

“She appreciates all our prayers and support and is truly disappointed not to be traveling this weekend. We love you, Catherine!!”

Their co-star Tom Wopat, known as Luke Duke by fans, also shared words of encouragement on Instagram, along with a throwback photo of the pair.

“Tom and the Wopat Webcrew are sending our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Catherine Bach, who was recently hospitalized,” he wrote. “Wishing her comfort and a full, speedy recovery.”

Ben Jones, who played mechanic Cooter Davenport, previously shared the concerning news on Facebook.

“Our dear Catherine Bach has just been admitted to the hospital in Los Angeles on an emergency basis,” he wrote, as quoted by Parade magazine.

“Catherine has an embolism that probably developed as a result of a recent surgery. We will keep you posted, and Catherine will share her story as soon as she is recovered. She is so, so sorry to have to cancel her appearance at Cooter’s this weekend.

“Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Love, Ben and Miss Alma.”

However, her appearance was canceled “due to unforeseen circumstances,” the outlet shared on Facebook.

“Catherine and Cooter’s Place are very sorry for any inconvenience,” they shared. “We will reschedule and announce the new date as soon as it’s set. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”

She went on to make hearts flutter on Valentine’s Day at Cooter’s Place.

“She was such a trooper,” one user wrote on Instagram. “I know she was signing things after we left and we were in line for seven hours so that is just impressive and I have so much respect for her.”

“The Dukes of Hazzard,” which chronicled the adventures of “the fast-drivin’, rubber-burnin’ Duke boys of Hazzard County,” aired from 1979 to 1985. The castmates have remained friends for decades.

In 2019, Bach told Fox News Digital she came up with the idea of wearing short shorts in the series.

“You would have, too!” she laughed. “The creators wanted me to wear a poodle skirt that matched the tablecloth. I said, ‘You want me to match the tablecloth? That’s demeaning to women.’ They went, ‘We didn’t come up with that!’

“They took me across the street from Warner Brothers, and sure enough, there were these older ladies waitressing at this little Italian restaurant wearing poodle skirts that matched the tablecloth.”

“I had go-go boots, a white turtleneck and a blonde wig because the creator loved Dolly Parton,” she shared at the time. “I thought, ‘We need a costume change.’ So, I got my jean shorts with cowboy boots and a little top. They loved it.”

Bach quickly became a sex symbol, posing for a famous poster that sold 5 million copies, and her legs were insured for $1 million.

“I didn’t look at it as being a pinup,” she explained. “On a personal level, my husband at the time didn’t like me working. So, I was going through this hard time emotionally, trying to be independent and assertive.

“Also, Warner Bros. wanted me to follow the same formula as Farrah Fawcett. But I felt like audiences wanted something else. They wanted an all-American country girl.”

“There is a certain amount of typecasting, sure,” Bach reflected. “Everybody goes through that. But I know I’m an actress. And I have not played that part since I finished ‘Dukes of Hazzard.’

“I know who I am, and I’m not worried about it. And everything can’t be the biggest hit. You can’t get the biggest part every single time. All I can do as an actress is deliver the work the best way I can. And I don’t mind if people still call me Daisy Duke or associate me with her. I think it’s cute and charming.”

Trump’s ‘America First’ Doctrine Echoes Globally at UN Assembly

0

Recent reports suggest that the Trump administration is urging other countries to reduce their global humanitarian aid commitments and instead focus on bolstering ‘America First values’ through investments in American businesses.

This proposed ‘trade over aid’ strategy aims to leverage the United Nations framework to generate commercial prospects for U.S. companies, according to a directive sent to U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide.

As detailed in a cable examined by The Washington Post, Secretary of State Marco Rubio instructed all U.S. diplomats to deliver a démarche, an official request for action, to foreign nations by Monday, urging them to back the new strategy.

The United States plans to present this concept at the United Nations by the end of April, as mentioned in the cable.

The news outlet Devex was the first to unveil the ‘trade over aid’ initiative and the internal documents from the State Department that elaborate on it.

‘For decades, government aid has been flowing from developed to developing countries with only limited impact,’ according to one of the notes the outlet obtained.

‘It has not solved the world’s economic development challenges, and it has often created dependency, inefficiency, and corruption.’

‘Donors and developing countries are ready to try a new development aid model,’ the note continued.

‘The old model has been government-centered and one-directional: aid flowed from donor to recipient countries. The new model emphasizes mutually profitable business relationships between private sectors and countries.’

The State Department also argued that private business has ‘developed all the world’s successful economies, not government aid’.

Sam Vigersky, an international affairs fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, told The Post that the démarche from Rubio could be seen as another attempt from the US to undermine the UN.

‘Having been on the driving end of many démarches over my time, I would not see this being well received,’ he said.

This paradigm shift comes after the Trump administration dismantled the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which had been the world’s largest foreign aid agency.

USAID had a $25 billion annual budget and provided global health aid, food assistance, education programs and disaster relief to developing countries around the world.

The organization, founded in 1961, was also America’s way to softly promote democracy around the world.

President Donald Trump and his allies, including Elon Musk, have argued that USAID was rife with waste, fraud and abuse. Some have also argued that USAID’s efforts have led to nations being entirely dependent on the US.

Even before Trump returned to power in 2025, Western nations including Germany, Sweden, Canada and Norway have been reducing foreign aid since at least 2022.

And since Trump’s proposed reordering of the global aid system, France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom have largely followed suit.

Data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that aid from its members has dropped by about 23 percent from 2024 to 2025.

The US drove ‘three-quarters of the decline’, according to the OECD report.

A study published in the Lancet in February found that countries stepping back from what was once considered a humanitarian responsibility could contribute to 9.4 million additional deaths by 2030.

Beyond upending diplomatic norms, Trump has also been attacking NATO countries for not sufficiently supporting his war effort in Iran.

‘NATO wasn’t there for us, and they won’t be there for us in the future!’ he posted to Truth Social on Tuesday.

Trump has long had it out with the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance, the military alliance between dozens of countries in Europe and North America that came about after the fall of Nazi Germany.

NATO has been the bedrock of the world order since 1949, when it was organized to counter aggression from the Soviet Union.

Under NATO’s collective defense principle, an attack on one member is considered an attack on all, though each country determines its own response. The alliance is widely credited with helping deter large-scale conflict in Europe since World War II.

Beyond upending diplomatic norms, Trump has also been attacking NATO countries for not sufficiently supporting his war effort in Iran (Pictured: An airstrike on an oil depot in Tehran on March 7, 2026)

France, Spain and other nations have agreed to help with an international coalition to open the Strait of Hormuz when the conflict ends

France, Spain and other nations have agreed to help with an international coalition to open the Strait of Hormuz when the conflict ends

During Trump’s first term, he repeatedly criticized certain NATO members for failing to meet the alliance’s defense spending target of 2 percent of GDP.

It was part of his broader message at the time that the US – which spends around 3.3 percent of GDP on the military – should not be broadly responsible for the defense of Europe.

In Trump’s second term, his brushes with NATO have been more severe. His talk of using the American military to annex Greenland, a Danish territory, has prompted NATO members to ramp up military exercises and increase their presence in the Arctic amid rising tensions.

Now, NATO allies have largely declined to join US-led military operations against Iran, while continuing to offer limited defensive and diplomatic support, further angering Trump.

Some allies have also placed limits on US operations. Spain has restricted the use of its bases for missions tied to Iran, while the UK has imposed conditions on how American forces can operate from its territory.

Trump has openly floated leaving NATO. He has also proposed moving US troops stationed in NATO countries that have largely stayed out of the Iran campaign.

DCLM Daily Manna 16 April 2026 — True Leadership Defined

DCLM Daily Manna 16 April 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — True Leadership Defined

TOPIC: True Leadership Defined (DCLM Daily Manna 16 April 2026)

KEY VERSE: For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God – 1 Thessalonians 2:9

TEXT: 1 Thessalonians 2:7-9 (KJV)

7 But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:

8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.

9 For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Many organisations faced an existential crisis when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the world in 2019 and 2020. While some leaders sought safety and comfort, others led from the front, working tirelessly to support those under their care. A striking example was seen among medical professionals who laboured day and night, sacrificing their convenience and risking their lives for the sake of their patients. Their leadership was not in words but in action, marked by selfless service.

Apostle Paul embodied this kind of sacrificial leadership. He did not demand assistance as an apostle but laboured to avoid being a burden to the Church. In our key verse, Paul states, “For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God”. Unlike many gospel ministers today, Paul’s ministry model was not built on entitlement but on effort. His work ethic matched the integrity of his message. He understood that true spiritual leadership is not about what one receives but about what one gives.

In many churches across the globe, some leaders demand financial incentives but fail to shepherd the flock with diligence. They request numerous offerings and seed money from the poor members. The Scripture is then used to justify the long list of contributions, with promises of blessings from God in return. While voluntary giving is commanded, it is expected that the proceeds are channelled to meet genuine exigences. Paul’s words serve as a rebuke to all who seek privilege without participation. The gospel is not an excuse for ease but a call to endurance. He and his companions toiled so that no one could accuse them of exploiting the people they were called to serve. Whether in spiritual service, business, or daily activity, believers must reject idleness and embrace responsibility. Leadership, whether in faith, family, or career, requires effort. The greatest impact comes not from words alone but from a life of relentless commitment and sacrifice, like the example that Jesus demonstrated.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Sacrifice defines leadership.

Rhapsody Of Realities 16 April 2026: Heralds Of A Message That Works

Rhapsody Of Realities 16 April 2026 By Pastor Chris Oyakhilome (Christ Embassy): Heralds Of A Message That Works

TOPIC: Heralds Of A Message That Works (Rhapsody of Realities 16 April 2026)

The Lord gave the word: great was the company of those that published it (Psalm 68:11).

Rhapsody Of Realities For Today’s MESSAGE:

The Gospel has been entrusted to us to publish in every nation and to every creature according to the words of the Master in Mark 16:15, “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” In these last days, God’s Word is reaching places and impacting people that were once considered out of reach, transforming lives in every continent.

Each testimony affirms that the Word of God is living and active, producing salvation, healing, restoration, and even raising the dead. The Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and His power remains unchanged. We function today as interpreters and publishers of His divine truth.

We didn’t create the message; we deliver it. The apostles and prophets of old received it by the Spirit and by the same Spirit, wrote it down. They played their role in disseminating the message, but today, we’re the ones on the scene, taking the work further by translating and distributing it in every language and in all nations.

One day, every labourer in the Gospel, every preacher, interpreter, translator, giver, and distributor will be rewarded by the Lord. Not one effort will go unnoticed. Therefore, refuse to be weary; let your passion for the spread of the Gospel be unquenchable.

The world desperately needs the Gospel for their salvation. And beyond that, they must be taught God’s Word so they can know their rights, privileges, heritage, and identity in Christ and live the life that pleases Him. That’s the joy of the Master—that they become His joint-heirs, reigning with Him!

This world belongs to Him. His Kingdom is eternal and universal. The earth is only one part of all that belongs to Him, yet He came here to give His life for us. We’re the ones He died for, His peculiar treasure, His heritage, and His workmanship.

Therefore, every life transformed makes our mission worth it. Every testimony affirms that the Gospel is divine. And in a world full of trouble, confusion, and fear, we are the solution. We are the answer. Our work in the Gospel is critical. We’re the hope of the nations. We’re heralds of a message that works.

PRAYER

Dear Father, thank you for the privilege of publishing your divine truths and bringing salvation to the ends of the earth. I am empowered by your Spirit to take the Gospel everywhere, transforming lives and nations. Through me, the knowledge of Christ spreads rapidly and prevails, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Israeli Airstrikes Claim Lives of Four Medics, Hit Two Rescue Teams, Reports Lebanese Authorities

0

IN BRIEF

  • Lebanese authorities have accused the Israeli military of “blatently violating” international law.
  • The Israeli military said it was “looking into” what happened.

In a series of three consecutive strikes, Israeli forces targeted southern Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of four medics and injuries to six others, according to Lebanese officials. The officials have accused Israel of intentionally attacking medical personnel.

The assaults occurred in the southern village of Mayfadoun, located near Nabatiyeh. The first strike hit medics responding to a call from injured civilians. A second group, attempting to assist their wounded colleagues, was also targeted, followed by a third team trying to aid both prior groups.

When approached for a statement, the Israeli military declined to provide details about the incidents, stating only that the matter was under investigation. Previously, Israel has claimed that the Iran-supported Hezbollah militant group exploits ambulances for its operations, although no evidence has been furnished to support this claim.

The Lebanese Health Ministry has strongly condemned the strikes, labeling them a “blatant violation” of international law.

The Lebanese Health Ministry condemned the attacks as a “blatant violation” of international law.

Abou Haidar Hayya, an official with the Islamic Health Committee involved in the rescue operation, said he feared such direct targeting of medics meant “there are no more red lines in this war”.

“Ambulances are protected under all international laws and conventions. It is forbidden to target them. And when those prohibitions collapse, we have nothing left,” he said by phone from the health centre in Nabitiyeh.

Since the Israel-Hezbollah war began on 2 March, at least 91 Lebanese medical workers have been killed by Israel, the ministry said, underscoring the intensity of the ongoing strikes and strain on Lebanon’s health system.

The overall death toll from the war in Lebanon jumped to 2,167 on Wednesday.

Back-to-back attacks on medics

Israel first struck a team from Lebanon’s Islamic Health Committee, a major healthcare provider that is affiliated with Hezbollah’s political movement, killing two paramedics, the group said.

A second team from the committee headed to the site and was struck in another Israeli attack that wounded three medical workers, the ministry reported.

The Nabatiyeh Emergency Services, as well as the Islamic Risala Scout Association, a paramedic group affiliated with the Amal movement, a Hezbollah ally, mounted a third rescue attempt.

They were hit by a strike that killed two more medics.

Most of the wounded medics remain in moderate condition except for one, who is in a serious condition after being hit in the chest by shrapnel, the Islamic Health Committee said.

Footage captured by the Nabatiyeh Emergency Services shows the second team of medics wearing their uniforms and riding in clearly marked emergency vehicles struggling to pull their bloodied colleagues out of wrecked ambulances that had veered onto the side of the road.

Rescue workers are seen administering aid to two wounded colleagues on stretchers in the back of an ambulance when an Israeli strike smashes into the vehicle, blowing out its windows and sending glass shattering everywhere.

The camera shakes, and the medic who was treating his colleagues screams in pain.

The video then shows a third team arriving to help the others before being attacked.

Hayya, from the Islamic Health Committee, said he doesn’t regret dispatching one team after another into the line of fire.

“We went in three times because we refuse to leave our paramedics behind, even if it costs all of us our lives,” he said.

He promised that the Islamic Health Committee and other paramedic groups would continue to carry out their duties in southern Lebanon despite the increasingly impossible conditions.

Israel expands its ground invasion

Across southern Lebanon, Israeli forces said they had struck more than 200 Hezbollah targets over the past 24 hours.

Hezbollah claimed rocket attacks on military targets in northern Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video address late Wednesday that he had ordered the military to expand its so-called “buffer zone” in southern Lebanon toward the east.

The Israeli military has issued evacuation warnings for wide swaths of southern Lebanon but tens of thousands of people have stayed— either because they don’t want to leave their homes or because they have nowhere to go.

Increasingly, though, residents say nowhere feels safe.

California Port of Entry Sees Record Drug Seizures: CBP Officers Confiscate $2.8M in Cocaine and Meth

0

EXCLUSIVE ON FOX: Officers from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have recently intercepted over $2.8 million in cocaine and methamphetamine during consecutive operations targeting suspected drug traffickers at the nation’s southern border.

The CBP team uncovered more than 430 pounds of illicit substances at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in California on the 7th and 8th of April.

The initial discovery occurred when a 51-year-old Mexican national driving a Toyota Prius was selected for a more thorough examination.

After a canine unit alerted officers, a detailed search of the vehicle revealed 44 packages of cocaine stashed in the doors, back seat, and rear quarter panels.

According to a news release provided to Fox News Digital, these drugs weighed approximately 124 pounds and were valued at around $2.4 million.

More than 430 pounds of cocaine and methamphetamine were discovered in hidden parts of vehicles by U.S. Customs and Border Protection authorities, April 7-8. (CBP)

The following day, a U.S. citizen described by CBP as a 21-year-old man driving a Nissan Frontier was also referred for secondary inspection.

A canine team and imaging system scan alerted officers to a compartment in the truck bed, where they discovered 25 packages containing about 307 pounds of methamphetamine.

The estimated value of the drugs was $491,200, according to the CBP.

Both drivers were arrested and will face federal prosecution.

The seizures highlight ongoing efforts by federal authorities to curb drug trafficking along the southern border, where cartels use increasingly sophisticated smuggling methods, including hidden vehicle compartments and trusted traveler lanes.

Officials say both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals are frequently recruited to transport drugs across ports of entry.

“These back-to-back seizures stopped dangerous criminals in their tracks and prevented deadly narcotics from ever reaching our communities,” Otay Mesa Port Director Rosa Hernandez said. “By combining their professional expertise with advanced technology, our officers demonstrate their commitment to securing our borders and keeping our country safe.”

The two drug busts come after President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, praised Trump’s immigration policies and the impact of border patrol efforts.

“He’s saving thousands of lives a year because he has a secure border,” Homan said about the president when speaking outside the White House. “Where President Trump had the most secure border in the lifetime of this nation, right now, lives are being saved.”

“Human traffickers are out of business, right? The cartels are going bankrupt because of that secure border,” he added.

Horrific 9-Hour Assault: Man Arrested After Brutal Attack on Girlfriend Ends in Exhaustion

0

Background: The East Bluff Community Center in Peoria, Illinois (Google Maps). Inset: Johnnie Chiaravalle (Peoria Police Department).

In Illinois, a man faces serious allegations of subjecting his girlfriend to prolonged physical abuse, involving strangulation and knife attacks, until he eventually fell asleep.

Johnnie Chiaravalle, aged 21, is now facing multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated domestic battery, alongside charges of domestic battery and unlawful restraint. These charges stem from an incident where he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend for several hours, as confirmed by the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office. Chiaravalle will remain in custody pending his trial.

Authorities were dispatched to the East Bluff Community Center in Peoria, a central Illinois city located approximately 160 miles southwest of Chicago, following reports of an assault on a woman.

Upon arrival, officers noted that the victim’s injuries were severe, with her eyes nearly swollen shut, numerous cuts and lacerations on her legs, and extensive bruising on her face and body. The victim identified her attacker as her boyfriend, Chiaravalle, according to the police report.

She further disclosed that he prevented her from leaving their home, subjecting her to hours of physical abuse. Allegedly, he struck her repeatedly in the face, head, and body, resulting in a fractured nose.

Chiaravalle additionally “strangled her multiple times and threw knives at her, causing cuts and lacerations to her legs,” she told authorities. When he fell asleep, she said she was able to escape their home.

Police arrived at the couple’s home and met with the suspect. He reportedly “told officers he had been asleep and claimed someone else must have caused her injuries.”

When officers investigated the home, they said they “found clumps of hair” believed to have belonged to the victim, “red blood-like stains on the floor, and multiple steak and folding knives.”  Chiaravalle was arrested and booked into jail.

The woman — as of Tuesday — was “hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries,” police said.

Chiaravalle is expected in court for an arraignment on May 13.

Experts Warn of Emerging Nuclear Arms Race: Global Tensions Reach Critical Levels

Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra, Marles said the Cold War era of strict nuclear arms control expired this year and the “global rules-based order” nations once operated under has been torn up.

Australia’s Defense Minister Richard Marles has sounded the alarm on the dissolution of Cold War-era nuclear arms control agreements, which were originally designed to prevent catastrophic nuclear confrontations. The expiration of the last treaty that capped the number of strategic nuclear warheads held by Russia and the United States—nations with the largest nuclear stockpiles—marks a significant turning point.

“We’re witnessing a resurgence in nuclear arsenals, with China leading in terms of growth,” Marles noted. “Without new arms control initiatives, we could very well be on the brink of a renewed nuclear arms race.”

Marles emphasized that this escalating nuclear threat isn’t just a distant concern but poses an immediate risk to Australia’s security and prosperity over the coming decade. He pointed out that this is a primary reason for Australia’s substantial investment in strengthening its long-term military capabilities.

“This struggle is not abstract. It will drive elevated risks to Australia’s security and prosperity over the coming decade.”

The defence minister said the looming nuclear threat is why Australia has invested heavily in its long-term military capability.

Marles described Australia’s $53 billion defence plan as one that strengthens “self-reliance” into the next decade.

He said military spending under Labor has increased by up to $30 billion over the forward estimates.

This is an extra $117 billion over the next 10 years, Marles added.

“To place this in context, the former Coalition government, which governed during a period when all the trends we are wrestling with today were just as present then, increased defence spending by just $10 billion over the decade,” he said.

Among the major defence investments made by the government recently has been the acquisition of nuclear submarines.

Marles said “major progress” had been made on the AUKUS agreement.

“The government has undertaken the most ambitious modernisation of Australia’s maritime capability since the Second World War,” he said.

But fortifying Australia’s military in the name of self-reliance “should not be confused with military self‑sufficiency”, Marles said, adding that Australia’s relationship with allies including the US remains important.

“Alliances, especially with the United States, will always be fundamental to Australia’s defence,” he said.

Australia will do ‘all within our power’ to bring peace

In his opening remarks, Marles insisted Australia was doing everything it could to bring lasting peace to the Middle East.

“The current ceasefire in the Middle East is an opportunity to move back from the brink,” he said.

“Open the Strait of Hormuz, restore the global fuel supply chain, and place events on a path to peace.

“For our part, Australia will do all within our power to help make this temporary ceasefire permanent.”

US Military Neutralizes Vessel, Eliminates Three Alleged Narco-Terrorists

The United States military has successfully taken down another drug trafficking vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of three individuals described as “male narco-terrorists,” according to a statement from the US Southern Command.

The operation involved what was termed a “lethal kinetic strike,” which took place on Wednesday. This decisive action was authorized by General Francis L. Donovan of the US Southern Command.

Officials reported that the vessel was operated by a group classified as a “Designated Terrorist Organization.” Intelligence reports indicated that the vessel was navigating a well-known drug trafficking route in the Eastern Pacific and actively engaged in drug smuggling activities.

The announcement confirmed that no US military personnel were injured during the operation.

In a show of transparency, the US Southern Command released a declassified video, available on their website and social media platform X, showcasing the destruction of the drug smuggling vessel.

In the black and white footage, a vessel that appears to have been a three-engine speedboat can be seen cutting through the waves.

About five seconds into the video, a missile can be seen flying towards the boat from out of frame before striking it and causing a large explosion.

The speedboat can then be seen on fire and slowly coming to a stop before the video ends.

The vessel was destroyed as part of Operation Southern Spear, which was launched by the Trump administration in September 2025 in an effort to reduce the flow of drugs entering the US.

The operation’s declared aims are ‘detecting, disrupting, and degrading transnational criminal and illicit maritime networks.’

US Southern Command is in charge of carrying out the operation.

It is one of the eleven unified combatant commands in the United States Department of Defense, and its area of responsibility is the Caribbean, all of Latin America below Mexico and the surrounding waters.

Following the unveiling of Operation Southern Spear, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that several cartels, and even the regime of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, were designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

In December 2025, President Trump signed an executive order designating fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction.

Those moves have given the US legal leeway to destroy suspected drug trafficking vessels and kill their operators without due process.

Critics of Operation Southern Spear have called the strikes on drug smuggling vessels illegal and expressed concern that the intelligence leading to the attacks may not always be accurate, creating the possibility of innocents being killed.

Operation Southern Spear faced particularly heightened scrutiny late last year after it was revealed that a second strike had been ordered to kill survivors clinging to wreckage who had not been killed in an initial strike.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had allegedly given verbal orders to leave no survivors. He was accused of a war crime, as killing survivors who are no longer combatants is considered a violation of international law.

Wednesday’s strike has brought the total number of vessels destroyed as part of Operation Southern Spear to 52, and it has brought the total number of people killed in the attacks to 174.

That breaks down to an average of about seven boats destroyed per month and an average of about 23 people killed per month since the operation began on September 1.

Between April 11 and Wednesday’s strike, three other attacks that were part of Operation Southern Spear have been conducted.

Two boats in the Pacific were destroyed on Saturday. Two people were killed in the first strike, and a third who abandoned the vessel is presumed to be dead. An additional three people were killed in the second strike.

A third boat was destroyed on Monday, killing two more people.
