Authorities: Toddler Found Unattended in Garage as Man Focuses on Truck Repair

0

A 20-year-old man from West Virginia is facing allegations of leaving a toddler unattended in a frigid garage while he worked on his truck, resulting in the child becoming ill.

According to court documents from Ritchie County, Ian Newlon was taken into custody last week on charges of child neglect, which posed a significant risk of death or serious injury. The local NBC station, WBOY, reported on the criminal complaint linked to the incident, which took place in February when temperatures plummeted to 2 degrees.

West Virginia State Police became involved in the case when two individuals sought a protective order against Newlon. The suspect had left the toddler with them after some time, and they found the child in poor condition, with a soiled diaper and symptoms of vomiting and coughing. The child was subsequently hospitalized for treatment.

During their investigation, officers interviewed Newlon, who reportedly admitted to leaving the boy in the garage while he was busy with his truck. Although the garage had a wood stove for heat, it was inadequate given the garage’s size and the extreme cold outside, according to the police.

Investigators later spoke with Newlon, who allegedly said he was “working on his truck” and left the boy in the garage. The garage was heated with a wood stove, but it was not being “sufficiently” warmed because of its size and the temperature outside, cops said.

Cops arrested Newlon on Saturday and took him to the North Central Regional Jail.

He posted a $15,000 bond on Tuesday, jail records show. Newlon was appointed a public defender and has yet to enter a plea. His next court date was not listed.

The report did not indicate Newlon’s relation to the boy.

The child’s updated condition was not divulged in the criminal complaint.

China Issues Travel Advisory: Scholars Targeted in the US – What You Need to Know

0
China’s foreign ministry has issued a warning to citizens travelling to the US, warning of “malicious questioning” at the border.

Travelers heading to the United States have been advised to steer clear of entering the country via Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. This caution follows an incident involving approximately 20 Chinese scholars who, despite having valid visas, faced what was described as “unreasonable inspections” by Customs and Border Protection officials, ultimately leading to their denial of entry.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy responded to these reports, stating that Chinese academics have encountered repeated harassment at this particular airport. In light of these issues, they recommended that Chinese citizens planning to visit the US prioritize their safety and security by considering alternative airports for entry.

Furthermore, the foreign ministry emphasized the importance of being well-informed about US entry requirements. They encouraged travelers to prepare thoroughly for their journeys.

“If you find yourself being questioned by US authorities, it’s crucial to remain calm and handle the situation rationally,” advised an official statement on social media.

“If you encounter questioning from US enforcement personnel, you should deal with it calmly and rationally,” according to a translation of the tweet.

The Australian government’s Smartraveller advice does not warn against travelling to the US, asking Australians to exercise “normal safety precautions”.

“Entry requirements are strict. US authorities have broad powers to decide if you’re eligible to enter and may determine that you are inadmissible for any reason under US law,” the Smartraveller advice reads.

“Check US entry, registration, transit and exit requirements. Whether you’re travelling on a visa or under the Visa Waiver Program, ensure you understand all relevant terms and conditions before attempting to enter the United States.”

Australians travelling to China are advised to “exercise a high degree of caution”.

“As previously advised, authorities have detained foreigners on the grounds of ‘endangering national security’,” the entry reads.

“Australians may be at risk of arbitrary detention, exit bans or harsh enforcement of local laws, including broadly defined National Security Laws.”

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor Requested to Relinquish Freedom of the City of London Honor

0

On April 17, 2026, it was reported that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor may be asked to voluntarily renounce his Freedom of the City of London. The City of London Corporation intends to request this action following a series of controversies surrounding the former prince.

Andrew, once a prominent royal figure, was stripped of his titles and royal privileges last October by King Charles. This decision was made in light of Andrew’s association with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Despite losing his royal status, Andrew had retained the honor of being a freeman of the City of London, which he was awarded in 2012. This honor was granted “by virtue of patrimony,” a tradition that allowed him to inherit the freedom from his father, the late Prince Philip, who was also a freeman.

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will be asked to give up the Freedom of the City of London

Recently, the City of London Corporation faced a dilemma regarding Andrew’s honor following his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office. A review conducted in March revealed that the corporation lacks the legal authority to revoke the honor due to the manner in which it was originally granted. As a result, they are left with the option of requesting that Andrew voluntarily relinquish this privilege.

A spokesperson for the City of London Corporation clarified the situation, stating, “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received the freedom of the City of London in 2012 by virtue of patrimony, which is inherited as the child of a freeman and constitutes a legal right.” This statement underscores the unique and hereditary nature of the honor, which complicates any efforts to revoke it without Andrew’s consent.

A spokesman for the City of London Corporation explained: “Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor received the freedom of the City of London in 2012 by virtue of patrimony, which is inherited as the child of a freeman and constitutes a legal right.

“Applications via patrimony are not considered or endorsed by our elected members, and there is no effective legal mechanism to remove this type of freedom.

“Elected members have today agreed to write to Mr Mountbatten-Windsor, inviting him to formally relinquish the freedom. They will consider the response received, if any, at a future meeting, and determine what action may be taken.”

The honour – which is believed to have begun in 1237 and enabled recipients to carry out their trade – is typically awarded to people nominated by corporation councillors and all of Andrew’s siblings have the freedom of the City of London, as do the likes of Sir Lenny Henry and Cate Blanchett.

The announcement comes a few weeks after Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, was stripped of the Freedom of the City of York following a unanimous vote from councillors, who cited concerns about the author’s links to Epstein, who died in 2019 aged 66.

The honorary title had been awarded to Sarah in 1987 following her marriage to Andrew, but councillors said the association raised questions about whether she met the standards expected of recipients.

Their motion, passed under Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, formally withdrew the status.

The move follows earlier action in 2022 when Andrew – the former Duke of York – was also stripped of the honour.

Following the release of the Epstein files, records from Companies House showed six companies linked to Sarah began winding down operations, while her charity, Sarah’s Trust, announced it would close “for the foreseeable future”.

LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Rising Star Amen Thompson: The Ultimate NBA Showdown

0

The unfolding drama of the first-round series between the Rockets and the Lakers reveals an almost poetic reversal of fortunes.

Merely three weeks back, the Lakers were riding high, showcasing the prowess of one of the NBA’s elite teams, seemingly poised for an impressive playoff journey. In stark contrast, the Rockets appeared to be floundering through March, desperately searching for stability.

Now, in a dramatic twist of fate, the scenarios have been flipped on their heads.

The Lakers stagger into the playoffs, grappling with the absence of their leading scorers, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, whose combined contribution of nearly 60 points per game has vanished like a wisp of smoke.

Meanwhile, the Rockets have found their stride, entering the postseason on a high, having triumphed in nine of their last ten encounters. Their resurgence can be credited to a redefined identity that revolves around a robust defensive strategy.

The Lakers will try to hold onto the rope long enough for their two stars to try to come back later in the series. Until then, here are some of the matchups to look for:

LeBron vs the Machine

The Lakers’ only chance of getting past Houston without Doncic and Reaves hangs on the back of a 41-year-old LeBron James.

Houston won’t treat him like a king. The Rockets will treat him like the head of the snake. Stop him and let the role players try to beat you. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Houston has a lot of players on its roster who can do that.

Let’s start with Amen Thompson — long, relentless and unapologetically physical. He finished fifth for NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting last season, and we expect another top-five finish this year. Thompson will take on the assignment of guarding James straight up at times, stripping away the need for help defense thereby allowing the rest of the players to stay home on their assignments.

When Thompson’s not on LeBron, the Rockets can also throw 6-foot-11 forward Jabari Smith Jr. on him with his over 7-foot wingspan. If they want a different look, Houston coach Ime Udoka can also put 6-8 physical forward Tari Eason on him.

Alperen Sengun vs DeAndre Ayton: The Battle Beneath

In a series defined by perimeter defenders and NBA legends, the most important matchup in the series might happen in the paint.

Turkish big man Alperen Sengun is now a fulcrum. He’s a two-time All-Star and a problem in the paint who demands constant attention. The assignment of guarding him belongs to former No. 1 overall draft pick Deandre Ayton.

In his first season with the purple and gold, Ayton has been inconsistent, his focus and effort drifting at times — until recently. The last six weeks have offered a glimpse into what he can be when he’s engaged, physical, present and focused.

Ayton has the most difficult assignment of any Lakers player. Rebound everything. Keep the Rockets off the offensive glass. Contain Sengun as much as he can, be the rim defender when the Lakers switch to a zone defense and run the pick and roll with James and Luke Kennard in order to make a dent on offense as well.

Different Defensive Looks and Disruption

Not an individual matchup, but we expect the Lakers to give the Rockets different looks on defense throughout the series. The team frustrated its opponents throughout the season by switching to a zone defense during games. We expect some zone looks in this series as well.

Houston isn’t a strong 3-point shooting team outside of Reed Sheppard, which could allow the Lakers to play zone sometimes and dare the Rockets to beat them from distance. They also want to disrupt passing lanes, force turnovers and blitz Kevin Durant. Blitzing Durant when he had the ball worked in their last two matchups in Houston. In their first matchup March 16, they erased a six-point halftime deficit by blitzing Durant and holding him scoreless the entire second half until a last-second layup in garbage time.

The Rockets have one of the slowest paces of play and will want to slow down the game and grind it to a halt in the half court. The Lakers, meanwhile, need chaos and to get out in transition. Quick strikes before the Rockets’ defense can even set up.

Houston will need Sheppard’s 3-point shooting in this series, but when he’s on the floor, look for LeBron and the Lakers to hunt him on defense. Drag him into screens. Force switches. Attack.

LeBron James vs. Kevin Durant: The Last of the Mohicans

Durant is the quiet storm that hovers over this series. Houston’s elite perimeter defenders allow Durant to expend his energy on the offensive end of the floor, where he can take over entire games.

The Lakers will likely throw the smaller Marcus Smart and stronger Rui Hachimura at him, hoping the combination can disrupt his rhythm. LeBron will even guard him at times as well. Help will inevitably come. It has to. But every second defender you throw at Durant allows someone else to be wide open.

If Houston finds those players and they make those shots, the Lakers are in big trouble.

Expect James to have the ball in his hands most of the time on offense, hunting mismatches and forcing Houston to make tough decisions. On defense, LeBron will lurk, providing help on Durant.

This might be the final chapter between LeBron and Durant and who wins the individual battles could be the player who leads his team to victory in the series.

Game 1 on Saturday will go a long way to decide who will win the series. Both teams will try to set the tempo early and impose their will. Houston has the momentum, the depth and the defense that travels.

The Lakers have LeBron, shooting and the hope that if they hold onto the rope long enough, Doncic and Reaves can return to rescue them later in the series.

Illinois Chronicles Part 2: Exploring Historical Landmarks in Anticipation of the Nation’s 250th Anniversary

0

Chicago and Illinois have left a significant imprint on the fabric of American history, and there’s now an engaging way to delve into their rich past. Illinois Humanities has introduced a unique “passport” designed to showcase pivotal sites throughout the Chicagoland area.

As the nation gears up to commemorate its 250th anniversary, this initiative invites you to embark on a journey through history. Our exploration continues with a visit to the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, a poignant stop on this historical tour.

The museum serves as a tribute to the Puerto Rican diaspora, offering a mosaic of stories that weave together themes of colonialism, resistance, and survival. Alyssa Corrigan-Cuadrado of the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture emphasizes that it is also a celebration of cultural roots and heritage.

In part two of our tour, we begin at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture.

“It’s highlighting the Puerto Rican diaspora as a collage of histories of colonialism, resistance and survival. But it’s also honoring, a celebration of our roots,” Alyssa Corrigan-Cuadrado with the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture.

As the United States gears up to celebrate its 250th birthday, the museum is inviting artists to show off their unique culture.

“This is an exhibit that is very much intentionally designed to tap into, right, the hearts of the Chicago Puerto Ricans, but also the Puerto Ricans that are coming from Ohio,” Corrigan Cuadrado said.

Puerto Rico is a U.S territory and has been since 1898. The museum includes multiple installations, like this one, that pay homage to how Spanish culture merged with Puerto Rican and much more.

Then we move to The Chicago History Museum, where “US at 250: Civic Action in Chicago” is on display. One exhibition in particular, highlights the Latino community, as a whole.

“It chronicles the ways that Latino people within the state of Illinois, and in particular the city of Chicago, have engaged in varied types of civic action, whether it’s through direct protests, art making, placemaking, establishing businesses,” Erica Griffin, the Elizabeth F. Cheney Director of Education.
You can also see a copy of the Northwest Ordinance. The document that helped establish Illinois as a state and banned enslavement in the area.

“And what we hope that people take away from our project is that the development of Chicago is an echo of the nation,” Griffin said.

Then there’s the Newberry Library, where the “Free & Independent” exhibition lives. Inside you can find all kinds of original documents central to the founding of the nation.

“When we say original, we mean original,” Will Hansen of the Newberry Library said. “So these are real things that are 250 or so years old. Printed or in some cases handwritten by The people who were there at the time, making this revolution happen in the what is now the United States of America.

And last but not least, Graceland Cemetery on Chicago’s North Side. It’s one of the city’s most historic resting places. Known for its landscaped grounds and striking monuments, it became the final home for many of Chicago’s most influential figures, including architects and business leaders.

Next week, we’ll explore even more stops featured in the passport released by the Illinois America 250 Commission.

Unexpected Verdict for Midwestern Mother in Realtor Murder Case

0

An ordinary mother from the Midwest, who faces charges in the long-unsolved murder of an Iowa real estate agent, might soon return to her hometown following a judge’s decision to reduce her bail.

Kristin Ramsey, 53, is accused of the 2011 murder of real estate agent Ashley Okland at a model home in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Ramsey, a mother of one, firmly denies the accusation and has entered a not guilty plea to the first-degree murder charge, a development that has deeply unsettled the close-knit community of Woodward.

Since her arrest last month, Ramsey has been held in custody due to an initially set bail of an extraordinary $2 million. However, this amount has now been significantly decreased to $500,000.

According to the bond order, Ramsey is eligible for release from the Dallas County Jail upon posting a $50,000 cash bail.

The defense petitioned to lower her bond, citing how her family background and lifelong commitment to the small town of Woodward make the risk of releasing her on bail non-existent.

Prosecutors claim Ramsey is a threat to the very community she professes to adore. They cited her marriage to her high school sweetheart Toby, her devoted parenting of son Tanner, and closeness to her parents, all of whom live locally.

The judge has ordered that she be confined to her $286,240 Woodward home under house arrest, pending trial.

Ramsey will be required to wear a GPS monitor, undergo random drug testing and surrendered all firearms from her home, the bond order said.

Prosecutors, in their filings arguing against a reduction in bail, alleged that Ramsey ‘does not have a safe and law-abiding home to return to.’

When officials searched her home in May 2011, they found several firearms, illegal substances, drugs and violent posters inside, court filings stated.

Investigators found the same items at the residence when they executed a search warrant after her arrest of March 17 this year.

Okland, 27, was found dead with two gunshot wounds on April 8, 2011, inside a model townhome she was showcasing for Iowa Realty Co.

A woman living in the adjacent unit heard a commotion and dialed 911.

The realtor was transported to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in critical condition, where she later died.

On the day of the murder, Okland was showing a prospective buyer around a show home constructed by Rottlund Homes.

That is the same company where Ramsey was working as a sales manager.

Despite the killing taking place in broad daylight, the case went cold for years.

Prosecutors have filed disturbing court documents that shed some fresh light onto what the authorities say happened on the day of Okland’s death.

But the defense argues there is ‘minimally sufficient evidence’ to indict Ramsey in a crime from 15 years ago.

Investigators have yet to offer any kind of motive for the killing.

They have not shared whether there were any interactions between Ramsey and Okland prior to the murder, or if there was any bad blood between the two women.

Defense lawyers acting on behalf of Ramsey have also highlighted two disturbing incidents that took place shortly after Okland’s 2011 murder.

One key witness tried unsuccessfully to kill themselves.

Okland was shot twice in broad daylight inside this model townhome on April 8, 2011

A second individual – a man who worked alongside Okland – took his own life a few months later.

It is unclear if the attempted suicide was in any way linked to Okland’s murder, although there is no suggestion of wrongdoing on that witness’s part.

The sister of Okland’s former coworker who died by suicide said he had been ruled out as a suspect.

The Daily Mail has approached Ramsey’s attorneys for comment.

Prior attempts to reach the defendant’s family were unsuccessful. The Okland family previously declined to speak to the press.

Starmer and Macron Criticized Over Proposed Strait of Hormuz Strategy

0

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are set to meet Friday to discuss the future of the Strait of Hormuz. Their summit will focus on advancing a European-led strategy to reopen this crucial shipping lane post-conflict, notably without direct U.S. involvement.

The proposed plan includes a naval mission led by Britain, France, and other neutral nations, which will mobilize only after hostilities cease. This approach contrasts with former President Donald Trump’s policy of using U.S. naval forces to blockade Iranian ports. The Anglo-French initiative seeks to remain detached from the conflict, concentrating instead on resuming commercial shipping operations.

A senior European official clarified that the initiative does not intend to bypass Washington. Speaking to Fox News Digital, the official noted that Paris has been considering a maritime mission since the beginning of the conflict and is now collaborating with London to finalize these plans.

Macron and Starmer are expected to host a summit to advance what both governments describe as a “coordinated, independent, multinational plan” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz once the fighting ends.

“France and the United Kingdom will also host a conference in Paris this Friday, bringing together by video conference non-belligerent countries ready to contribute, alongside us, to a multilateral and purely defensive mission aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the strait when security conditions allow,” Macron wrote on X.

Starmer similarly described the effort as a “coordinated, independent, multinational plan to safeguard international shipping when the conflict ends,” saying Britain had already convened more than 40 nations around the initiative, Reuters reported. Washington was not part of those earlier talks.

The European senior official said the proposed force would be “strictly defensive” and would only deploy after active fighting and bombardment have ended, with the goal of restoring normal shipping rather than enforcing a wartime corridor.

“What we want in the end is no blockade, no toll, no nothing that blocks the fluidity of what is going through the Strait of Hormuz,” the official told Fox News Digital, while stressing that Iran remains “the first problem.”

The official also rejected suggestions that Paris and London are trying to sideline the Trump administration, saying the U.S. has been kept informed and that there is extensive coordination with Washington even if the emerging mission is currently limited to “non-belligerent” countries.

“We’re coordinating a lot with them,” the official said, adding that the goal is to create a framework that can operate once the conflict is over.

Macron has repeatedly emphasized that France’s envisioned mission would be “strictly defensive” and ruled out escorting ships while “bombings” are ongoing. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said “several dozen countries” already had participated in preparatory discussions led by military chiefs of staff, and that any future mission would also require coordination with Gulf coastal states, according to Reuters.

The Anglo-French initiative comes as Trump has taken a far more aggressive approach, ordering the U.S. Navy to blockade Iranian ports and continue operations aimed at securing the strategic waterway after ceasefire talks between the U.S. and Iran collapsed in Pakistan.

Critics argue that without American military power, the European proposal risks being largely symbolic.

Britain and France are overstating what they can realistically achieve, The Henry Jackson Society analyst Barak Seener said.

“Britain and France are playing at being relevant as so-called ‘Middle Powers’ in international affairs,” Seener told Fox News Digital.

“Keir Starmer’s assertion ‘We’re not getting dragged into the war’ disguises the embarrassing fact that the Royal Navy is facing a hollowed out crisis, causing the initiative to be ‘strictly defensive’,” he said.

“France’s navy is also facing structural and budgetary pressures that strain its ability to conduct high-tempo operations.”

“It is laughable that a European coalition of ‘non-belligerent’ countries that are only willing to engage once hostilities have ended can even speak of protecting its shipping lanes,” Seener added.

“Ultimately, the U.S.’s deployment of hard power, consisting of carrier strike groups and fighter aircraft to blockade Iranian ports and clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz, can protect shipping lanes.”

Coca-Cola Contemplates Exit from Queensland’s Containers for Change Scheme: Potential Impacts Explored

0
Coca-Cola has indicated it could walk away from the Containers for Change scheme in Queensland, after the government proposed an overhaul.

Last month, the government introduced new legislation aimed at enhancing the governance of a specific scheme, following a parliamentary inquiry that uncovered accusations of conflicts of interest, unfair contractual practices, misleading conduct, and instances of bullying.

In a formal response, a multinational beverage corporation criticized the proposed legislation, suggesting that it exceeds what would be considered reasonable regulatory oversight.

Coca-Cola could walk away from the Containers for Change 10c refund program in Queensland, if new legislation is passed to give the government more oversight. (Getty)

The company warned that the proposed changes could potentially heighten governance risks and erode confidence within the industry.

They further expressed concerns that these amendments could present significant practical challenges for Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) in maintaining their role in the governance of COEX and might compel them to reevaluate their involvement.

COEX, a non-profit organization overseen by CCEP as a founding member, is tasked with the administration of this scheme.

The inquiry had found that COEX had invested “comparatively little” of its own funds into community or environmental initiatives and did not have a “transparent plan” to do so.

“While the scheme has generated more than $2.5 billion in revenue since inception, less than 40 per cent has been returned to Queenslanders through refunds, and less than 2 per cent has gone directly to charities.”

It argued COEX does not have a ”transparent plan for reinvestment in environmental or charitable programs”.

The inquiry also made referrals to the state’s Crime and Corruption Commission.

Environment minister Andrew Powell said anyone could share their views as part of the committee process.

“We have introduced legislation to strengthen the scheme’s governance after a scathing report exposed its serious failures under the former Labor government,” Powell said in a statement.

“A parliamentary committee is looking at proposed changes to strengthen the container refund scheme, and anyone can share their views as part of this process.”
